Pop art FROM T-SHIRTS KISSED WITH VIRAL SUCCESS (BUT FOR CHARITY) TO THE MOST FUN AND TRENDY BAGS OF THE MOMENT: THE GLIMMED PHENOMENON IS UNSTOPPABLE Glimmed was born three years ago from an idea of Ludovica Francesconi Ligresti and William Selmo. Both Milanese in their early twenties but with a clear goal: to create a playful fashion line, for those who love to express themselves without taking themselves too seriously. Ironic but with attention to detail, starting with the name of the brand itself: from the union of "glamor" + "glimmer", a neologism for a fun, eccentric, young style. Thus, from what initially seemed a simple bet, the super-famous Boobs T-shirt was born, in collaboration with the Umberto Veronesi Foundation. Worn by international stars and influencers, it has gone viral on social networks, quickly becoming a real iconic garment.

Today Glimmed expands the line of bags and clothing, relying on a small close-knit team of 'under 30' creatives. Alongside the online distribution channel, initially the only platform for launching and distributing products, they have developed a real capillary distribution structure on the territory, which has been strengthened thanks to the entry of an Italian production / distribution partner who, believing in the potential of the young brand, has made it possible to carry out a series of activities and distribution expansion projects both in Italy and abroad. The brand is currently present in some of the most prestigious department stores in the world including La Rinascente (Milan), Galeries Lafayette (Paris), Attica (Greece).

Sarah Staudinger, founder of the women's leather goods brand, thus takes her first steps in activewear. The collection includes twenty ready-to-wear outfits that can be coordinated with numerous accessories perfect for summer. Riva del Garda Fierecongressi is preparing to put the spotlight on the 5th edition of Gardabags, the event dedicated to the world of volume bags and accessories that completes the offer of Expo Riva Schuh, the international reference point for volume footwear. The companies present (1,388 last edition, from over 40 countries) will be joined by a select and qualified group of national and international exhibitors.

Organised to give a concrete response to the growing demand for the total look, from bags to purses, belts, gloves, umbrellas and more, the unmissable appointment is scheduled for 11 - 14 December 2020. Gardabags has already established itself as the reference hub for the 12 thousand European and international buyers present, and renews itself for the next edition with the same enthusiasm. The winners of the 2020 “Design A Bag” competition organised by Fashion Access fair and sponsored by ARSUTORIA school were announced in a live Zoom meeting. This year’s theme was “Design a Leather Bag, Mirror to the Soul, Mind & Body.”

Among the three talented finalists was also named an overall winner, Mary Chan with her Second Skin bag. Not only did Mary win a cash prize, but also the ARSUTORIA prize: the chance to attend a four-week specialisation course in “Leather goods pattern making” in Milan (Italy). As a note issued by the international jury reads, she was chosen as the winner due to the evocative construction of the bag inspired by the body and the need for safety in these uncertain times. The vegetable-tanned leather is soft and flexible and mimics the curves and edges of the human body, and potentially opens up to mixing with other materials.

Many designs were submitted to the jury by many young international designers, also voted by online fans who chose “Infinite” by Smriti Saraogi of Dharavi Market, India, as their favourite design for 2020. The occasion gave all participates the opportunity to show off their work. An international showcase that offers young designers a great opportunity to present their talent to companies with which they could cooperate in the future.

Sono stati premiati in diretta zoom i vincitori dell’edizione 2020 del concorso “Design a Bag” organizzato dalla fiera Fashion Access e sponsorizzato da ARSUTORIA school. Tema di quest'anno: "Design a Leather Bag, Mirror to the Soul, Mind & Body".

Tra le tre talentuose finaliste è stato individuata anche una vincitrice assoluta, Mary Chan con la sua Second Skin.

Quest’ultima, oltre ad aggiudicarsi un premio in denaro, si è assicurata anche il premio assegnato da ARSUTORIA school: la possibilità di frequentare un corso di specializzazione in “Leather goods pattern making” di quattro settimane a Milano (Italia). Come si legge in una nota della giuria internazionale, si è aggiudicata il riconoscimento per la suggestiva costruzione della borsa ispirata al corpo e al bisogno di sicurezza in questi tempi incerti. La pelle conciata al vegetale è morbida e flessibile, richiama le curve e gli spigoli della figura umana, si apre potenzialmente alla commistione con altri materiali.

Svariati sono stati i progetti sottoposti alla giuria da parte dei tanti giovani designer internazionali, votati anche dal popolo di internet che ha potuto esprimere le sue preferenze per la minibag modulare Infinite di Smriti Saraogi of Dharavi Market, India. Founder of the brand Elena Tarabakina gives a perfect description of the new collection of bags and leather goods: “Russian uniqueness embodied in accessories”. The inspiration comes from contemporary art and architecture, with a predilection for the most avantgarde abstraction. Elena is dedicated to experimenting with the structure and functions of the bag, a factor that gave her the idea of making one, for example, which to the eye looks like a "cushion" in soft lambskin. The designer also plays with more classic designs by adding shoulder straps, pockets and unusual details, while retaining a palette of very refined shades: caramel, cinnamon, taupe, cream, baby blue. All accessories are made from 100% local materials and hand-sewn in Moscow.

L'ispirazione giunge dall'arte e dall'architettura contemporanea, con una predilezione per l'astrazione più avanguardistica. The khaki canvas, original from the 1970s of the Italian Army, may show small signs of wear, the initials of the soldier or the name of his beloved hidden inside a pocket. ATHISON The Athison collection (a brand of Manifattura di Domodossola, a company founded in 1913) is made with vegetable-tanned leather, the most traditional, natural and ecological manufacturing process, and the one most favoured by those who want an eco-sustainable and hypoallergenic product. In fact, it is free of toxic substances such as azo dyes, nickel or pentachlorophenol and chromium VI, which are harmful not only for humans but also for nature.

This minimises the impact on health and the environment during production, recycling and disposal. Most of the substances used in the vegetable tanning of the hides are recovered during the manufacturing phases and transformed into fertilizers for agriculture, while the final part (sludge) is largely used in the construction industry. The desire to work with the most eco-friendly raw materials are the foundation of the Athison philosophy. All the processing is environmentally friendly, and the ancient handcrafted processes have never been abandoned but have been integrated with modern technologies.

La collezione Athison (brand di Manifattura di Domodossola, realtà fondata nel 1913) è prodotta con pelle conciata al vegetale, il più tradizionale, naturale ed ecologico processo di lavorazione, una delle tecniche privilegiate da chi vuole un prodotto ecosostenibile e anallergico: infatti è privo di sostanze tossiche come coloranti azoici, nichel o pentaclorofenolo e cromo VI nocivi non solo per l’essere umano ma anche per la natura. How sustainable is fast fashion?

A STUDY CONDUCTED BY LECTRA WITH LEADING PLAYERS IN THE SECTOR, AMONGST SURPRISES AND CONFIRMATIONS, REVEALS THAT A LOT MORE CAN BE DONE TO REPLY TO THE DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABILITY BY CONSUMERS The extremely relevant and much debated topic of sustainability in the fashion industry, which is the third ranking industry worldwide for global emissions of CO2, is now on a fast track following the pandemic. The lockdown saw an emergence of consumers with greater awareness and responsibility, who are now asking that brands update the way they design, produce, and distribute products into a more sustainable key. Especially targeted is the fast fashion model, considered unsustainable because it is based on excessive consumption and irresponsible trade practices. Today, however, with the increasing demand of consumers, also fast fashion brands are now motivated to change their offering, adopting a more eco-sustainable, authentic, and transparent approach.

Lectra, a leader in the development of solutions and technologies for the fashion, automotive and upholstery industries, decided to take a closer look at sustainability in fast fashion with a survey based on an analysis of Retviews, a start-up of recent acquisition that is in charge of benchmarking for the fashion industry. The result highlights a situation where there is definite room for improvement.

The first element taken into consideration in the survey is the inconsistent presence of sustainable collections in fast fashion. The differences from one retailer to the next are enormous: the eco-sustainable collections of Zara and H&M, which both signed the Fashion Pact of G7 at Biarritz, are in fact only a very small part of the lines offered. Zara’s Join Life represents 14% of the entire range when compared to the 30% of C&A’s #Wearethechange. The Conscious collection of H&M, at the top of the Transparency Index created by Fashion Revolution, instead accounts for 9% of the entire range of products. Uniqlo and Mango are instead at the very bottom, with only 2% of their total offering made up by sustainable products.

The protagonist of the sustainable collections is organic cotton, a material considered “sustainable” by brands, which will continue to be a priority for the rest of 2020 and even after. Nevertheless, there is a small difference between the fabrics more commonly used in the mass market and those used in premium markets.

The same is true of the eco-sustainable collections when compared to traditional ones, where we find cotton and synthetic fabrics like polyester, elastane, and viscose among those that are most widely used.

The survey also debunks the myth that would have sustainable fabrics costing more. An example of this is provided by the Join Life collection of Zara, with the sustainable dress costing 31.70 euros against the 39.90 euros of the standard collection.

So, between surprises and confirmations, there is still room for fast fashion to grow in this field, with the awareness that “the opportunities offered by sustainability are significant, – explains Quentin Richelle, Head of Marketing Activities at Retviews – above all when it comes to the rapport with Generation Z and the fact that 90% of consumers are ready to change their habits in order fight climate change”.

Particolarmente sotto accusa è il modello del fast fashion, considerato insostenibile perchè basato su consumi eccessivi e pratiche commerciali irresponsabili. Ma oggi, sotto la spinta dei consumatori, anche i brand del fast fashion sono incentivati a modulare l'offerta, adottando un approccio più ecosostenibile, autentico e trasparente.

La collezione Conscious di H&M, al vertice del Trasparency Index creato da Fashion Revolution, si attesta invece al 9% della gamma totale di prodotti.

Uniqlo e Mango sono invece il fanalino di coda, con la proposta sostenibile al 2% dell'offerta totale.

Protagonista delle collezioni sostenibili è il cotone organico, materiale considerato “sostenibile” dai brand e che continuerà ad essere una priorità per tutto il 2020 e in seguito. Vi è tuttavia una leggera differenza tra i tessuti utilizzati più comunemente nei mass market e nei mercati premium. Lo stesso vale per le collezioni ecosostenibili rispetto a quelle tradizionali, dove troviamo tra i tessuti più ampiamente utilizzati il cotone, e i tessuti sintetici come il poliestere, l'elastan e la viscosa.

Il sondaggio sfata anche un mito, quello che i tessuti sostenibili siano i più costosi.

Un esempio è fornito dalla collezione Join Life di Zara, dove un vestito costa 31,70 euro contro i 39,90 euro della collezione standard.

Dimar Green Project Dimar Green Project THE COMPANY BASED IN MONTORSO VICENTINO IS SPENDING INCREASINGLY MORE RESOURCES AND ENERGY TOWARDS A PRODUCT WHICH IS EVER MORE ECO-SUSTAINABLE

Being a company known internationally in the tanning field involves great responsibility towards customers, its employees and in particular the environment. The commitment, matured over the years to fulfill these obligations has contributed to the birth of the DIMAR GREEN PROJECT. The project bases its foundations on three key points: sustainability, traceability and the Green line. Safeguarding and respecting our planet has become, over the years, an often-discussed topic, on which Dimar has decided to invest a lot of its resources and energy. In January 2020, the company therefore inaugurated a new solvent free finishing department where it is possible to develop customised items for each customer.

Starting with a raw material deriving from LWG traceability and the use of an alternative tanning, has allowed the creation of a selection of new items, both split and grain leather, with specific eco-sustainability features that are char-

acterised by the absence of chromium (Chrome free)*, the absence of heavy metals (Metal free)*, the use of chemical substances synthesised in the laboratory in order to make non-toxic leather, the presence found in nature in small percentage (below the limits: Metals <1000 mg/kg; formaldehyde <16 mg/kg).

In support of the project, the company has undertaken investments in the research and use of chemicals and solvents of the latest design, thus ensuring a decrease in harmful substances and in the construction of a new solvent-free finishing plant. The transformation of production waste into organic fertiliser for agricultural use, the reduction of polluting emissions and consumption, installing class A systems and photovoltaic panels, a better organisation of shipments and the use of reusable packaging (cardboard boxes) with a drastic decrease in the use of plastic are among other steps taken for a greener future.

Essere un’azienda nota a livello internazionale nel campo conciario comporta grandi responsabilità nei confronti dei clienti, dei propri dipendenti e in particolare dell’ambiente. L’impegno maturato negli anni di assolvere a questi obblighi ha contribuito alla nascita del DIMAR GREEN PROJECT. Il progetto fonda le proprie basi su tre punti chiave: sostenibilità, tracciabilità e linea Green. La salvaguardia e il rispetto del nostro pianeta è diventato, nel corso degli anni, un tema molto dibattuto e sul quale la Dimar ha deciso di investire molte delle proprie risorse ed energie. Così, a gennaio 2020, l'azienda ha inaugurato un nuovo reparto di rifinizione solvent free nel quale è possibile sviluppare gli articoli personalizzati per ogni clienti.

Partendo da un grezzo proveniente da tracciabilità LWG e l'utilizzo di una concia alternativa, questo ha permesso la realizzazione di una selezione di nuovi articoli, sia crosta che fiore, aventi specifiche caratteristiche di eco-sostenibilità che si ca-

ratterizzano per l'assenza di cromo (Chrome free)*, l'assenza di metalli pesanti (Metal free)*, l'utilizzo di sostanze chimiche sintetizzate in laboratorio in modo da rendere atossica la pelle, la marginale presenza in percentuale riscontrabile in natura (al di sotto dei limiti: Metalli < 1000 mg/kg; formaldeide < 16 mg/kg).

A supporto del progetto, l'azienda si è impegnata in investimenti nella ricerca e utilizzo di sostanze chimiche e solventi di ultima progettazione, garantendo così una diminuzione delle sostanze dannose e nella realizzazione nuovo impianto di rifinizione solvent free. Tra gli altri passi portati avanti per un futuro più green, vi è la trasformazione degli scarti di produzione in concime organico per uso agricolo, la diminuzione di emissioni inquinanti e dei consumi, installando impianti di classe A e pannelli fotovoltaici, una migliore organizzazione delle spedizioni e l'utilizzo di imballaggi riutilizzabili (scatole in cartone) con la drastica diminuzione dell’uso della plastica.

A “greener” business model ASPHALTE DISRUPTS THE CONVENTIONAL FASHION MODEL AND FINDS A NEW WAY OF PRODUCING So the story goes: William Hauvette and Rodolphe Gardies were menswear veterans and founded a men’s knitwear brand that followed the classic fashion model of buying stock to sell to customers, with retailers cutting a margin somewhere in between. Eventually, they had created a product that even they couldn't afford. So, back to the drawing board they went, enlisting a group of their friends to participate in a feedback session. The team gave themselves a monumental task: to create what Rodolphe calls 'the perfect jumper'. Their friends gave them a price that they'd be willing to pay for that jumper, a number that became the benchmark and the budget for developing that specific product. This successful experiment gave rise to a new brand and Asphalte was launched in October 2016 with a total look range in mind. The premise is simple: one timeless product (a t-shirt, a bag, a pair of shoes, etc based on a survey among customers) is prototyped with cherry-picked manufactures in Europe, launched every few weeks, with clients only being able to adjust for colour and size. The company holds no stock: working on a pre-order basis , the exact quantity of materials are delivered only when an order is placed.

Consumers are drawn in by the genuine and trasparent nature of the brand, having every piece of information about the products. Having sold 2,500 units of its first product (that "perfect jumper"), Asphalte has since grown to a community of 60,000 subscribers in France alone, due to the fact that this peculiar business model eliminates the need to make difficult consumption choices.

Lanfranchi, sustainability in its DNA THIS LEADING REALITY IN THE PRODUCTION OF ZIPPERS HAS A POLICY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY THAT IS EXPRESSED NOT ONLY IN ITS PRODUCT LINES, BUT ALSO ON AN ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL, AND ECONOMIC LEVEL THAT INCLUDES ALL PROCESSES In the world, Lanfranchi has become synonymous with zippers of the highest quality for the fashion industry, positioning itself among the market’s global leaders. A record achieved also thanks to the adoption of high standards of sustainability that regards not only product development, but also the productive and environmental chain, people, and the territory.

Lanfranchi's zippers are all Oeko-Tex certified, they also adhere to the Greenpeace Detox protocol against toxic substances for humans and the environment. The zip ribbons are made of Newlife, a fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, and GOTS certified organic cotton.

Production is fully integrated and Made in Italy in every phase of the productive cycle – weaving, sewing, dyeing, cutting, fusion and galvanic treatment, assembling, and even the realization of machinery – allowing Lanfranchi to implement an integrated management system for occupational health, work safety, and environmental protection in accordance with international standards including OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001. However, the commitment of Lanfranchi goes beyond the minimum required by law and sees the implementation of new technologies to achieve the highest standards of eco-sustainability without penalizing the quality and look of the zippers.

Like the new futuristic galvanic treatment facility which, although it has doubled the production capacity, allows for savings of up to 30% in water consumption and 35% in sewage-discharged water. Fumes are treated according to BATs (Best Available Techniques) so that emissions can meet the highest ecological standards. The weaving facility features energy from renewable sources (solar panels) with a savings of over 23 tons of CO2 every year.

Production scraps - coming from brass teeth, zinc, and nylon are all salvaged and given to companies that take care of their recycling. All packages are marked RESY and made from recycled cardboard that is 100% recyclable.

Ma l'impegno va oltre i minimi di legge e Lanfranchi continua ad implementare nuove tecnologie per raggiungere i più alti livelli di ecosostenibilità senza penalizzare la qualità ed estetica delle chiusure lampo.

Nel nuovo impianto di galvanica, ad esempio, a fronte di una capacità produttiva raddoppiata, Lanfranchi ha ridotto i consumi di acqua del 30% e del 35% l'acqua scaricata in fognatura. I fumi sono trattati secondo le BAT (Best Available Techniques) per ottenere emissioni secondo i più alti standard ecologici. Nell'impianto di tessitura, invece, l'energia è da fonti rinnovabili con un risparmio di oltre 23 tonnellate di CO2 l'anno.

Gli scarti della produzione – dentini di ottone, zinco, nylon, etcsono riciclati e smaltiti a società dedite allo loro valorizzazione. Anche gli imballaggi sono realizzati con cartone riciclato e riciclabile al 100%.

This is the first line of recyclable and mono-material products to obtain the gold level of C2C certification by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, recognized as one of the most innovative solutions in the implementation of the circular economy philosophy in technical and production processes, and will be the inspiration for a total look line of circular products by Napapijri in the upcoming seasons. It is now known that when producing leather 75% of the raw material is not used and is often destined for landfill. The heart of this project patented by EMM is the recycling of the raw material, also known as Wet Blue, which is recompacted for its new use without the help of adhesives that can be harmful to the environment. This clean technology allows recycling 95% of the process water and the waste streams are converted into energy that is fed back into the production process with an 80% reduction in environmental impact.

Sustainability for Fratelli Zucchini La sostenibilità secondo Fratelli Zucchini “IF YOU REALLY WANT TO DO SOMETHING, YOU'LL FIND A WAY; IF YOU DON'T, YOU'LL FIND AN EXCUSE”. THERE IS ALSO A WAY TO BE MORE ECO-SUSTAINABLE IN ADHESIVES, AND FRATELLI ZUCCHINI HAS FOUND IT.

Today, we are all aware of the importance of issues such as ecology and sustainability; for this reason, Fratelli Zucchini has been developing a line of water-based adhesives for footwear, leather, automotive, nautical, and padded goods for many years which are not only intuitively healthier and more ecological than their solvent-based counterparts, but also include more eco-sustainable packaging, in order to effectively contribute to the reduction of the circulation of plastic on the planet, while still maintaining the same adhesive effectiveness. The eco-sustainability of these products also makes them already compliant with the most severe specification restrictions currently in circulation.

What does water based adhesive mean?

Water-based adhesives are made of natural and synthetic rubber latices, polyurethane or polychloroprene polymers and resins in aqueous dispersion.

Bonding takes place by water evaporation, therefore it takes a bit longer than with solvent based products (above all in case of not absorbing or waterproof materials); however the difference disappears in presence of ovens on the

conveyor or in warm environments. The dispersion is white, turning transparent when drying.

Why should you choose a water based adhesive? The yield of a water based adhesive can be more than twice compared to a solvent based one, thus reducing a lot the apparent higher kg/price of the product, above all if you consider that these adhesives allow the elimination of expensive ventilation systems, necessary for using solvent base adhesives and that the frequency of compulsory worker's medical examinations decreases drastically, improving the healthiness of the working environment and reducing costs for the firm.

Water based adhesives, moreover, allow to set at zero the harmful emissions into the atmosphere, the VOC amount, and to reduce waste disposal costs for empty packaging, because they did not contain solvents, therefore they don't need to be disposed as a ADR dangerous waste (even if they cannot be considered as municipal solid waste). The packaging in vitop or silver bag, with the external carton box, reduces even more plastic – and waste disposal - to the inner sac alone.

Oggigiorno tutti siamo consapevoli dell’importanza che rivestono temi come ecologia e sostenibilità; per questo motivo, Fratelli Zucchini ha sviluppato già da molti anni una linea di adesivi a base acqua per calzatura, pelletteria, automotive, nautica e imbottito che, non solo risultano intuitivamente più salutari ed ecologici dei loro corrispondenti a base solvente pur mantenendo la stessa efficacia nell’incollaggio, ma prevedono anche imballaggi più eco-sostenibili, in modo da contribuire fattivamente alla riduzione della circolazione della plastica sul pianeta. L’eco-sostenibilità di questi prodotti li rende di fatto anche già conformi alle restrizioni di capitolato più severe attualmente circolanti.

Cosa sono gli adesivi a base acqua? Gli adesivi a base acqua sono composti da lattici di gomma naturale e sintetica, polimeri poliuretanici o policloroprenici e resine in dispersione acquosa.

L'incollaggio avviene per evaporazione dell'acqua, quindi in tempi che, a temperatura ambiente, risultano leggermente più lunghi dei loro cugini a base solvente (soprattutto in presenza di materiali non assorbenti o impermeabili), la differenza però è praticamente nulla in presenza di forni sulle manovie, o

in ambienti comunque caldi. Appaiono bianchi in dispersione, trasparenti dopo l'essicazione.

Perché scegliere un adesivo a base acqua? La resa di un adesivo base acqua può arrivare ad essere oltre il doppio di quella di uno a base solvente, riducendo quindi sensibilmente l'apparente aumento di costo/kg del prodotto, soprattutto se si considera che questi adesivi non richiedono i dispendiosi impianti di aerazione necessari per l'uso di quelli a base solvente e che si abbassa drasticamente la frequenza delle visite mediche obbligatorie per il personale, portando così ad un miglioramento del livello di salubrità dell'ambiente di lavoro e riducendo i costi per l'impresa.

Gli adesivi base acqua permettono inoltre di annullare le emissioni nocive in atmosfera, di azzerare il conteggio VOC, e di ridurre i costi di smaltimento degli imballi vuoti che, non avendo contenuto solventi, non devono essere smaltiti come rifiuti pericolosi soggetti ad ADR (sebbene non siano comunque assimilabili ai normali rifiuti solidi urbani).

La confezione in vitop o silver bag, con l’imballo esterno in cartone, limita ulteriormente la plastica – e lo smaltimento - al solo sacco interno.

Smit & Zoon’s commitment to sustainability is also renewed in its educational activities with a contest aimed at encouraging young creative talents to conceive a collection in which sustainable leathers are the protagonists.

Smit & Zoon’s chosen partner in this initiative is the Arsutoria School, an internationally recognised institute for design and technical training in the field of shoes.

The contest will see five youths, selected from among the best former students of Arsutoria School, compete with one another in the creation of a capsule collection made up by six footwear models featuring sustainable leathers and Smit & Zoon chemical product treatments. Two prototypes per finalist will then subsequently be selected and developed.

L’impegno di Smit & Zoon per la sostenibilità si rinnova anche sul versante della formazione con un concorso volto a stimolare giovani creativi nell’ideazione di una collezione in cui i pellami sostenibili siano protagonisti.

Come partner dell’iniziativa Smit & Zoon ha scelto Arsutoria School, istituzione riconosciuta a livello internazionale nel campo della formazione di preparati designer calzaturieri.

Il concorso vedrà fronteggiarsi cinque giovani, selezionati tra i migliori ex studenti di Arsutoria School, nella progettazione di una capsule collection composta da sei modelli di calzature realizzati con pellami sostenibili, trattati con i prodotti chimici Smit & Zoon, da cui, in seguito, verranno scelti e sviluppati due prototipi per ciascun finalista.

Hommy Diaz – USA As a son of immigrant parents growing up in Queens, New York (80’s - 90’s) counterfeit clothing and footwear was available on every other corner across all 5 boroughs. The deception of shopping at retail fueled him as a young teenager to be creative and one day produce authentic and honest products. The past 12 years in the footwear industry having worked for DC Shoes, Palladium Boots and K-SWISS has provided him with the experience of visiting over 40 major cities around the world for footwear market research and over 20 mass production factories related to footwear in 5 different countries. He came full circle from his early desires as a teenager to find the resources to design and produce unique products of his own vs knocking off an established brand to turn a profit. To shine a positive light on the luxury of being a “Product Of An Immigrant”, he kept his promise and have leveraged his knowledge and network to design, develop and launch a head to toe brand called MAGNUS ALPHA. Figlio di genitori immigrati, Hommy è cresciuto, fra gli anni '80 e '90, a New York, nel Queens, un quartiere dove potevi trovare vestiti e calzature contraffatti ad ogni angolo. La delusione che provava entrando in un negozio e non trovando nulla che gli piacesse, lo ha spinto, sin da ragazzino, ad essere creativo e a sognare di poter realizzare, un giorno, prodotti autentici e onesti. Gli ultimi 12 anni nel settore calzaturiero, nel quale ha lavorato per DC Shoes, Palladium Boots e K-SWISS, gli hanno permesso di visitare, per ricerche di mercato sulle calzature, oltre 40 importanti città nel mondo e oltre 20 fabbriche del settore in 5 Paesi diversi: un prezioso bagaglio esperienziale. Così è tornato al punto di partenza, ai desideri da teenager, e si è impegnato a trovare risorse per creare e produrre da sé articoli unici, per contrapporsi alla logica del marchio affermato volto al profitto. Per esaltare quello che considera il lusso di essere se stessi e realizzare il "Prodotto di un immigrato". Hommy ha mantenuto la promessa e ha sfruttato la sua esperienza e la sua rete di conoscenze per progettare, sviluppare e lanciare un marchio personale chiamato MAGNUS ALPHA.

Javier A. Mogollón – SPAIN He grew up in Barcelona, the city where he also had his studies in product design and his first approach to a sports design job.

Today, he is working as a freelance designer setting up personal projects from a sustainable and innovative perspective in the footwear and the equipment business. Back on time, he started as a tent and awning designer for caravan and motorhome industry. At this time, he had the chance to work with technical fabrics and sewing processes at an industrial scale. In 2016 he moved to Portugal, joining a Portuguese producer of mountain sports equipment as an equipment designer specialized in commuting bags and outdoor sports backpacks. In 2019, he took part in the exceptional sneaker course at Arsutoria School, where he extended his knowledge in the footwear industry, addressing his professional skills to what he is doing today.

Cresciuto a Barcellona, città in cui ha anche studiato product design e assaporato il primo approccio alla professione di designer per il mondo dello sport, oggi Javier lavora come freelance, realizzando progetti focalizzati su sostenibilità e innovazione per il settore calzaturiero e delle attrezzature. Ha iniziato come designer di tende e verande per l'industria dei camper e dei motocaravan. In quel periodo, ha avuto la possibilità di lavorare con tessuti tecnici e processi di cucitura su scala industriale. Nel 2016 si trasferisce in Portogallo e inizia una collaborazione come designer di attrezzature, specializzandosi in borse da viaggio e zaini per attività all'aperto. Nel 2019, prende parte all'eccezionale corso di Sneaker Design e Pattern Making presso Arsutoria School, dove amplia le sue conoscenze nel settore calzaturiero, focalizzando le proprie competenze professionali su quella che è la sua attuale professione.

Guglielmo Gorno – ITALY He comes from a small town near Milan, in Italy. Guglielmo is a junior footwear designer at Ermenegildo Zegna and he previously worked for Puma. His passion for footwear design comes from his love for sneakers. He is a sneaker head since he was a kid.

Some years ago he decided to make Shoes his career, and to turn his passion into his job. The first step in doing so was to study at Arsutoria School that gave him everything needed to start out in this field. After that experience he has been selected for two Pensole Footwear Design Academy scholarships that gave him the opportunity to study footwear design while traveling around the world. He is very passionate about his job and his goal is to make an impact in the industry creating meaningful products.

Proviene da una piccola città vicino a Milano. Guglielmo è Junior Footwear Designer per Ermenegildo Zegna e ha lavorato, precedentemente, per Puma. La sua passione per il design di calzature nasce dall’amore per le sneaker. È un cosidetto “sneakerhead”, un collezionista di sneaker fin da quando era bambino. Alcuni anni fa decide di fare delle scarpe il proprio futuro professionale, e sceglie di trasformare la sua passione in un lavoro. Il primo passo è stato studiare all’Arsutoria School, che gli ha fornito le solide basi per approcciare il settore. Dopodiché è stato selezionato per due borse di studio alla Pensole Footwear Design Academy, che gli hanno fornito l’opportunità di studiare footwear design viaggiando per il mondo. Appassionato del proprio lavoro, Guglielmo vuole lasciare un segno nel settore, dando vita a prodotti significativi.

Alexandros Vasdekis – GREECE He is a Greek footwear designer with a deep love for shoes and a passion for nature. After graduating with a biology degree where he mainly focused on the concept of sustainability, he decided to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a footwear designer. He attended the prestigious London College of Fashion and Arsutoria School, where he acquired designing and technical skills, which he then honed through his work experience as a footwear designer in Italy, London and Athens. He was selected by Arsutoria to showcase a footwear collection on the runway at Fashion Graduate Italia, he was a footwear designer finalist at an international contest in Portugal and was also a winner of the Sophia Webster design competition. Biology remains his biggest source of inspiration, and through his designs he creates stories and raises awareness about environmental issues and unknown aspects of biology.

Un designer di calzature greco con un profondo amore per le scarpe e passione per la natura. Dopo la laurea in biologia, dove si è concentrato principalmente sul concetto di sostenibilità, Alexandros ha deciso di perseguire il suo sogno di diventare designer di calzature. Ha frequentato il prestigioso London College of Fashion e Arsutoria School, dove ha acquisito competenze progettuali e tecniche, che ha poi affinato attraverso l’esperienza lavorativa come designer di calzature in Italia, Londra e Atene. Vincitore del Sophia Webster Design Competition, è stato selezionato da Arsutoria School per la sfilata Fashion Graduate Italia ed è stato finalista nel concorso internazionale Moda Portugal Design Competition per la categoria footwear. La biologia rimane la sua più grande fonte di ispirazione e, attraverso i suoi progetti, crea storie e cerca di stimolare consapevolezza sulle problematiche ambientali e sugli aspetti sconosciuti della biologia.

Laure Wolff – FRANCE Laure is a footwear designer familiar with the complete product life cycle from creation to commercialization. With an artistic venture starting in the music field, she was gradually lead to fashion through the door of luxury footwear, first in retail & wholesale and further on in brand development and creative direction. Her career soon evolved towards design finding the path of her creative roots. She studied footwear design, pattern making and prototyping, first at Central Saint Martins and LCF and later on at Arsutoria in Milan. Passionate about design, craft and self-expression, she finds her inspiration in the fields of art, architecture and in the observation of contemporary lifestyle. She today accompanies brands in all the steps of footwear creation with a strong focus on sustainability both in materials and processes, seeking to reconcile the beautiful and the good.

Laure è una designer di calzature che ha familiarità con l'intero ciclo di vita della creazione del prodotto, dal concept alla commercializzazione. Con un'avventura artistica iniziata nel campo della musica, viene gradualmente affascinata e condotta al mondo della moda grazie alle calzature di lusso. Inizia a lavorare prima nel commercio al dettaglio e all'ingrosso e successivamente nello sviluppo del marchio e nella direzione creativa. La sua carriera si è presto evoluta verso il design, ritrovando così la via verso le sue radici creative. Ha studiato design della calzatura, modelleria e prototipazione, prima presso la Central Saint Martins e LCF e successivamente presso Arsutoria School. Appassionata di design, artigianato e auto-espressione, trova le sue fonti d’ispirazione nell'arte, nell'architettura e nell'osservazione dello stile di vita contemporaneo. Google traces its raw materials FROM THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN GOOGLE AND WWF SWEDEN, ARRIVES A PLATFORM THAT WILL HELP FASHION BRANDS TO SOURCE RAW MATERIALS IN A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY Fashion must resolve its problem with sustainability: today, the World Bank estimates that the sector is responsible for 20% of wastewater and up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. A large part of the CO2 footprint of fashion arrives from its raw materials: this is why those who are genuinely interested in being sustainable can no longer procrastinate on this issue.

To help fashion brands make more aware and sustainable decisions with regards to the sourcing of raw materials, today, the collaboration between Google and WWF Sweden is kicked off, giving life to a platform that will trace more than 20 kinds of raw materials, from cotton to synthetic materials.

This new tool that makes use of Google’s automatic machine-learning system (with access to the complex data of the Google Earth Engine) and WWF’s knowledge of the environmental impact of a product’s lifetime, will assign each raw material and sourcing origin a score that will take into account aspects like water availability, atmospheric pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, the quantity of waste generated, etc.… allowing brands to make the most sustainable sourcing decisions. The platform will also help cut back on risks: for example, if a brand is used to sourcing its materials from a certain supplier, it could undertake specific actions to help reduce some of the negative impacts.

The platform is set up like an open tool, is updated automatically, and can even extends its range to complement other existing systems in the calculation of environmental impact: like the Sustainable Apparel Coalition materials sustainability index, the Textile Exchange raw materials assessment, or the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s reconstruction of responsible supply chains in the garment and footwear industries.

Although Google declined to name brand partners, it seems that Stella McCartney worked on the test pilot, with multiple luxury, denim and athletic brands having already signed on to participate.

Gran parte dell'impronta di CO2 della moda deriva dalle materie prime: ecco perché un brand che vuole essere realmente sostenibile non può trascurare questo tema.

Per aiutare i brand della moda a prendere decisioni consapevoli e sostenibili rispetto all'approvvigionamento delle materie prime, prende oggi il via una collaborazione tra Google e WWF Svezia per dare vita ad una piattaforma che traccerà più di 20 materie prime, dal cotone ai materiali sintetici.

Il nuovo strumento che si avvale delle capacità di apprendimento automatico di Google (con l'accesso a dati complessi di Google Earth Engine) e la conoscenza dell'impatto ambientale del ciclo di vita del prodotto di WWF, assegnerà ad ogni materia prima e località di approvvigionamento un punteggio su aspetti come la scarsità dell'acqua, l'inquinamento atmosferico, le emissioni di gas serra, la quantità di rifiuti generati, etc... permettendo ai brand di compiere una scelta di approvvigionamento più sostenibile. La piattaforma aiuterà anche nella mitigazione del rischio: ad esempio, se un brand è abituato a rifornirsi da una determinato fornitore, potrà intraprendere delle azioni specifiche per mitigare alcuni degli impatti negativi.

La piattaforma si configura come uno strumento aperto, si aggiorna automaticamente, e per ampliare il suo ambito si può allineare ad altri sistemi esistenti per calcolare gli impatti ambientali: come l'indice di sostenibilità dei materiali della Sustainable Apparel Coalition, la valutazione delle materie prime di Textile Exchange, o la ricostruzione delle filiere responsabili nei settori abbigliamento e calzature dell'Organizzazione per la Cooperazione e lo Sviluppo Economico.

Sebbene Google non abbia voluto specificare i nomi, sembra che Stella McCartney abbia partecipato al test pilota, inoltre sarebbero già arrivate le adesioni di svariati nomi del lusso, del mondo del denim e dello sport.

Japanese designer Tsuchiya Kaban has been crafting leather bags and accessories since 1965. From bags to wallets and small accessories, detail and craftsmanship are in the center of his process, creating pieces that enhance the sense of individuality on each customer.

La borsa per angurie di Tsuchiya Kaban è un'opera d'arte davvero inaspettata. Come parte dell'iniziativa "the fun of carrying", la borsa presenta un utilizzo molto specifico, che probabilmente non avevamo mai visto prima. Attraverso dettagli complessi, la borsa può espandersi e contrarsi a seconda delle dimensioni del frutto, il fondo è costituito da svariate parti in pelle, che regalano supporto e durevolezza. Il designer giapponese Tsuchiya Kaban realizza borse e accessori in pelle dal 1965. Dalle borse ai portafogli e piccoli accessori, i dettagli e l'artigianato sono al centro del suo processo, creando pezzi che esaltano il senso di individualità di ogni cliente.

The passing of Giorgio Cannara La scomparsa di Giorgio Cannara

He left suddenly, without making any noise, taking his beautiful irony with him, and his smile that always hid a great desire to laugh and never take himself too seriously. Giorgio Cannara, long-time president of Aimpes (the trade association, today called Assopellettieri), died on July 31st. He was a leather goods manufacturer who loved his job like few others. He was about to turn 75 years old and he was a friend. One of those friends that even if you did not see each other for a long time would greet you as if you had seen him yesterday.

A lover of good food (it’s no coincidence that he was from Parma) and a heavy smoker, against the advice of doctors, Cannara was a man who belonged to an association – AIMPES – which he guided for years with passion and professionalism, bringing the fair – MIPEL – to become the most important leather goods fair in the world.

Farewell Giorgio, have a good trip and don’t forget to bring your suitcase full of memories and dreams: they may come in handy.

Se ne è andato all’improvviso, senza far rumore, portandosi via un po’ della sua bellissima ironia e quel sorriso che nascondeva sempre una gran voglia di ridere e di non prendersi mai troppo sul serio. Giorgio Cannara, presidente per molti anni di AIMPES ( l’associazione di categoria oggi Assopellettieri), pellettiere innamorato come pochi del suo lavoro, è scomparso il 31 luglio. Doveva ancora compiere 75 anni ed era un amico, uno di quelli che puoi anche non incontrare per tanto tempo, ma che – quando lo saluti – è come se lo avessi incontrato il giorno prima.

Amante della buona tavola (non a caso era di Parma) e accanito fumatore nonostante ogni divieto dei medici, Cannara è stato un uomo di associazione – l’AIMPES – che ha guidato per anni con passione e competenza, portando la fiera di riferimento – il MIPEL – a essere sempre la più importante rassegna mondiale di borse, valigie, piccola pelletteria.

Ciao Giorgio, fai buon viaggio e non dimenticare di portare con te la valigia dei ricordi e quella dei sogni: potranno sempre esserti utili.

BY FAR

By Far was initially born in 2016 from the idea of the Bulgarian twins Sabina and Valentina and their sister-in-law Denitsa to only create range of classic shoes, but soon the appeal of leather bags was too strong.

The By Far models are striking for their 90s-style minimalist elegance, in fact the designers admit that they are utterly inspired by the first episodes of "Sex and The City" and "Friends", in an eccentric mix of contemporary and vintage. The brand boasts the use of premium sustainable materials, the production takes place in a small family-run atelier and starts with the revaluation of Italian-sourced leather waste, allowing the company to put its eco-sustainable philosophy into practice.

Inizialmente By Far nasce nel 2016 dall’idea delle gemelle bulgare Sabina e Valentina e dalla loro cognata Denitsa di creare solo una linea di calzature classiche ma presto il richiamo della pelletteria è troppo forte.

I modelli di borse By Far colpiscono per l’eleganza minimalista stile anni ’90, difatti le designer ammettono di ispirarsi ai primi episodi di "Sex and The City" e "Friends", in un mix eccentrico fra contemporaneo e vintage.

Il brand vanta l’utilizzo di materiali premium sostenibili, la produzione avviene in un piccolo atelier a conduzione familiare e parte dalla rivalorizzazione degli scarti di pellame di origine italiana, permettendo all’azienda di mettere in pratica la sua filosofia eco-sostenibile.
