LEATHER, FULL SPEED AHEAD! The very high turnout of industry professionals at the IULTCS conference in Dresden testifies the vitality of a sector that, it has become clear by now, wants to go on the offensive, shout out loudly and be heard to clearly explain the qualities and advantages of leather.

Leather Naturally explains it, so does UNIC. Both, in fact, are undertaking important marketing campaigns which, in their intentions, should not only negatively counteract the attacks to the sector, but positively promote one of the most sustainable materials in the world.

Due to the decreasing market data at the beginning of 2019, operators are therefore a little worried. How can you get out of a stagnant situation where you can perceive lack of interest in leather? All trade associations agree that promotion and sustainability are the key weapons to be used in this sort of conflict to gain market share and the taste of consumers, especially that of young people.

In this issue we talk about sustainability by analysing a particular aspect linked to the theme: traceability. The challenge for an increasingly transparent supply chain is open, full of obstacles to overcome, but also of possibilities to fling wide open.

PELLE, ALLA CARICA! L’altissima affluenza di addetti del settore al congresso IULTCS di Dresda testimonia la vitalità di un comparto che, ormai è chiaro, vuole andare all’attacco, vuole gridare forte e farsi sentire, vuole esplicitare con chiarezza i pregi e i vantaggi della pelle.

Lo spiega bene Leather Naturally, così come UNIC. Entrambe, infatti, stanno intraprendendo un’importante azione di marketing che, nelle intenzioni, dovrebbe non solo contrastare in via negativa gli attacchi al settore, ma positivamente promuovere uno dei materiali più sostenibili al mondo.

Fermento, quindi, nonostante i dati di mercato in calo ad inizio 2019 preoccupino un poco gli operatori. Come uscire da una situazione stagnante in cui pare si percepisca disamore per la pelle? Tutte le associazioni di categoria concordano che promozione e sostenibilità siano le armi chiave da utilizzare in questa sorta di conflitto per conquistare quote di mercato e il gusto dei consumatori, soprattutto giovani.

Di sostenibilità parliamo in questo numero analizzando un particolare aspetto legato al tema: la tracciabilità. La sfida per una filiera sempre più trasparente è aperta, ricca di inciampi da superare, ma anche di possibilità da spalancare.

Uno tra gli aspetti più entusiasmanti nell’assistere alla formazione della campagna Leather Naturally Leather, è stata la direzione strategica ben delineata su cui la campagna si è basata.

Peraltro, un fugace sguardo ai flussi dei social media e a molte delle conversazioni in corso con le nostre numerose associazioni di categoria, ci ha mostrato un settore sotto assedio.

Il desiderio di porre fine alla continua presentazione dell’industria conciaria come sporca, pericolosa e inquinante, che maltratta la propria forza lavoro e massacra inutilmente miliardi di animali solo per la loro pelle, è enorme. La reazione degli arrabbiati conciatori nel corso del tempo è stata di due tipi.

Lamentarsi affinché il settore difenda se stesso, e richiedere che qualcun altro lo faccia al posto loro.

E’ errato immaginare che una dichiarazione resa a gran voce da un singolo organismo che agisce per conto proprio, sia sufficiente a neutralizzare l’impatto globale di animalisti, vegani aggressivi e lobbisti del cambiamento climatico, non interessati alla verità sul sequestro di metano e carbonio. E’ necessario coordinarsi in una strategia globale, ma è indispensabile che tutte le nostre concerie in giro per il mondo, di concerto con altri portatori d’interesse, facciano la loro parte. Non bisogna restare nell’ombra ma intervenire direttamente, tramite il finanziamento e l’impiego delle competenze interne dei dipendenti o anche dei pensionati. Da trent’anni sento la lamentela che “occorre combattere la percezione negativa legata alla pelle”, sempre accompagnata da scuse sulla mancanza di tempo, denaro e risorse da dedicare alla causa.

In modo perverso, è stato spesso affermato che, essendo “le pelli grezze una merce rara”, la promozione della pelle aumenterebbe i prezzi creando caos in un mercato poco elastico.

Questo punto di vista riduce il marketing a nient’altro che una mera promozione. Ma il marketing è ben altro.

La “difesa” di un settore non realizza una campagna. E’ un approccio debole e ci fa apparire spaventati e già in fuga.

Basta dare un’occhiata alle serie di commenti su Twitter di alcuni dei nostri organismi più influenti, per leggere una quantità senza fine di messaggi che attaccano le alternative alla pelle, lamentandosi di tutti coloro che la criticano. Questo è il “marketing della paura” ed è controproducente. E spesso degenera in interventi a vanvera ed errori di sostanza.

One of the exciting aspects of watching the build up of the Leather Naturally Leather campaign has been the well laid out strategic direction on which it has been based.

On the other hand a brief glance at the social media streams, and many of the conversations ongoing within our many trade associations, is to see an industry under siege. The desire to bring an end to the continuous representation of the leather industry as dirty, dangerous and polluting, abusing its workforce and needlessly slaughtering billions of animals only for their skins is immense.

The reaction from upset tanners over the years has been two fold.

To complain that the industry needs to defend itself and to demand somebody else do it for them.

It is wrong to imagine that one statement made loudly by a single body acting alone will be enough to negate a global mixture of animal rights activists, aggressive vegans and climate change lobbyists who are not interested in the truth about methane and carbon sequestration. Coordination is needed as is a global approach, but we need all our tanneries around the world plus other stakeholders to be part of this. Not standing back but deeply involved via funding and application of in-house skills, employees and even retirees.

The cry that “negative perceptions of leather must be challenged” I have heard for three decades, always accompanied by excuses why they cannot afford the time, the effort or the cash to do any-

Dobbiamo raccontare tutte le storie positive sulla pelle, e mostrare le sue proprietà uniche che la rendono così importante nell’era moderna. E’ un dato di fatto che l’uso e la manipolazione di articoli principalmente in pelle li rendano personalizzati, più comodi e più belli. La maggior parte dei consumatori porta con sé due o tre articoli in pelle alla volta – un portafoglio, una borsa, una cintura o un paio di scarpe – e ne possiede in numero maggiore a casa – e spesso uno di questi è l’articolo in pelle preferito, che per qualche motivo è divenuto quasi un amico, e porta con sé un significato speciale o dona una sensazione bellissima quando lo si prende dall’armadio, da far ricordare sempre il momento in cui lo si è acquistato.

La pelle può essere sostituita per il prezzo, mai per la qualità Come primo materiale per coprirsi utilizzato dall’uomo per potersi spostare attraverso diversi tipi di terreni e climi, e pertanto quasi onnipresente, la pelle ha assistito all’inarrestabile sviluppo di altri materiali finalizzati a sostituirla in diversi contesti. Ceramica, vetro, metalli, carta, tessuti e plastica hanno sostituito la pelle in molti casi, ma nessuno di essi è stato in grado di conquistare l’amore e i sensi dei consumatori nello stesso modo. Può essere che ciò sia dovuto all’essenza naturale della pelle, una struttura biofilica sostanzialmente basata su una rete di collagene, che umanizza un mondo fatto di tecnologia, acciaio e vetro.

Indubbiamente la pelle non è un materiale economico usa-egetta. Non si addice agli oggetti acquistati e gettati via dopo uno o due utilizzi. E’ un materiale da utilizzare in articoli fatti per durare, di cui aver cura, da riparare, a volte da tramandare alle generazioni successive.

La longevità è il primo e più importante elemento vitale dell’Economia Circolare, poiché diminuisce l’esigenza di introdurre nel ciclo nuovi materiali. Inoltre il primo stadio di riparazione è decisamente preferibile ai costi di trasporto, rigenerazione e produzione di nuovi articoli; e se operato su larga scala (e non solo per la pelle) può occupare il 4% della forza lavoro la cui attività non sarà mai sostituita da robot.

La pelle è speciale in così tanti ambiti che qualsiasi programma di comunicazione dovrebbe ricordarlo. Dobbiamo promuovere gli aspetti positivi.

Tutti gli operatori di marketing sanno che l’attacco della concorrenza non è un modo sensato di procedere. Esistono modi migliori per contrastare le false affermazioni, ed è troppo facile scivolare nell’ambientalismo d’accatto o esagerare la verità.

Il settore conciario non deve mai presentare i fatti in maniera falsa, né negare l’esistenza di aspetti ancora da migliorare.

Il successo della pelle si basa su bellezza e prestazioni, sulle sue origini naturali e sulla sua longevità. Non esiste materiale derivato dal petrolio o dalle piante, o sviluppato dall’ingegno umano, che possa uguagliare la pelle. La pelle può essere sostituita per il prezzo, ma mai per la qualità.

Marketing is so much more.

“Defending” the industry does not make a campaign. It is weak and makes it look as though you are frightened, already on the run.

A look at the Twitter streams of some of our most influential bodies and you will see endless postings attacking leather alternates, complaining about anyone that criticises leather. This is “fear marketing” and is counterproductive. And it often descends into loose language and factual errors.

We need to tell the positive stories about leather and demonstrate its unique properties that make it so relevant for modern times.

It’s experiential values that mean through use and handling items largely made of leather usually become personalised, more comfortable and better looking. Most consumers carry two or three leather items at any one time - a purse, a wallet, bag, belt or shoes – with more at home – and often one will be the favoured leather item, which for some reason has become more of a friend, holding special significance or being so lovely when pulled from the closet that it is a perfect reminder of what makes a wise purchase.

Leather might be replaced on price, never on quality From being the first sheet material that humans had to aid moving about through varied terrains and climates, and thus quite ubiquitous, leather has seen the relentless development of other materials that can serve as substitutes in different areas. Pottery, glass, metals, paper, textiles and plastics have all replaced leather in many areas but none have captured the love and senses of consumers in the same way. It may be that leather is essentially organic, a biophilic structure essentially based on a collagen network. It humanises a world of technology, steel and glass.

Leather certainly is not a cheap, disposable material. It does not fit where items are bought and thrown away only one or two uses. It is a material to be put into items which are made to last, to be looked after, to be repaired, sometimes to be handed down the generations. Longevity is the first and most vital element of the Circular Economy as it reduces the need for bringing new materials into circulation. Then the first circle of repair is also much better than the cost of transportation, re-processing and making new articles; and done widely (not only with leather) it can employ 4% of the workforce whose work will never be replaced by robots.

Leather is special on so many levels any communication programme must celebrate that fact. Let us promote the positives.

All marketors know that attacking the competition is not a sensible way to behave. There are better ways to engage with mistruths and it is too easy to slide into greenwash or overstating the truth.

The leather industry must never falsely represent the facts. Nor deny that there are areas we still need to improve.

Leather holds its place on beauty and performance, on its natural origins and its longevity. There is no sign of an oil based, plant based or fabricated material that can match leather. Leather might be replaced on price, never on quality.

AN EXTRAORDINARY TURNOUT IN DRESDEN FROM 25 TO 28 JUNE AT THE WORLD MEETING DEDICATED TO THE PRESENTATION OF TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS IN THE TANNING SECTOR Leather chemists from all over the world met in Dresden from 25 to 28 June to follow the work of the XXXV IULTCS Congress entitled “Benign by design – a Future through Science and Sustainability”. The attendance was very huge: there were 480 delegates who had the opportunity to listen

I chimici del cuoio di tutto il mondo si sono dati appuntamento a Dresda dal 25 al 28 giugno per seguire i lavori del XXXV Congresso IULTCS intitolato “Benign by design – a Future through Science and Sustainability”. Altissima la partecipazione: sono stati ben 480 i delegati che hanno avuto la possibilità di ascoltare settanta relazioni tecnico-scientifiche e visionare più di un centinaio di ricerche presentate in modalità “poster”. Inappuntabile l’organizzazione dei padroni di casa, la VGCT, l’associazione dei chimici della pelle tedeschi che ha messo in piedi un evento importante sia dal punto di vista sociale che dei contenuti. Un successo in termini di affluenza e di qualità dei lavori che ha superato le stesse aspettative di Dietrich Tegtmeyer, presidente del Congresso e past president di IULTCS che al termine dell’evento ci ha detto: “Personalmente ho imparato moltissimo dai Congressi del passato e sono felice di aver contribuito alla riuscita di questo che rappresenta il culmine del mio impegno associativo.

Spero che tutti i partecipanti abbiano trovato qualcosa di interessante da portarsi a casa”.

Molto soddisfatto anche Thomas Yu, presidente in carica di IULTCS: “Sono convinto che solo attraverso lo scambio di esperienze si possa promuovere un vero cambiamento ed un’occasione come questa con esperti e ricercatori da 35 Paesi diversi è davvero preziosa per il progresso del settore”.

Il Congresso è stato inaugurato la sera del 25 giugno con i discorsi ufficiali di organizzatori e autorità locali, piacevolmente inframmezzati da brani musicali suonati dell’Orchestra sinfonica giovanile di Dresda. Il giorno successivo si è entrati nel vivo dei lavori congressuali con un vastissimo programma di argomenti,

The Congress was inaugurated on the evening of 25 June with the official speeches of organisers and local authorities, pleasantly interspersed with music played by the Dresden Youth Symphony Orchestra. The following day, conference work was launched with a vast program of topics, both for the scientific part concerning basic research on skin collagen and for the more technological part concerning the novelties of the production process.

There were many papers dedicated to the most impacting phases of the tanning process, such as the beamhouse cycle, soaking, unhairing and liming phases with the proposal of innovative and more sustainable solutions.

Many ideas emerged from the studies presented by researchers from research institutes and universities around the world, from the use of micro-waves to accelerate tanning to the development of new “bio-based” tanning agents of all types, from mushrooms to bacteria, to organic waste of all kinds. s Speakers often talked about climate change, environmental footprint and the reuse of waste from the production process.

Parallel to the scientific part, two “engineering sessions”, one dedicated to the automation and digitisation of leather production and the other to the novelties of machinery and equipment.

area where about thirty companies had set up real information stands.

To offer the opportunity to present their research work to a greater number of researchers, the organisers inaugurated a new format that was very successful for the speed of each presentation: a quick three-minute scientific speech followed by an in-depth analysis planned poster sessions (called speed session).

Among the keynote papers of the Congress, in addition to the Heidemann Lecture entrusted to prof. Kheng-Lim Goh that was dedicated to the stability of collagen, we point out the one of Michael Costello who spoke about the life cycle of products (LCA) and explained how the new calculation rules of the environmental footprint (EPD) give the possibility to analyse and discuss different solutions comparing numerical data,

Naturalmente si è spesso parlato di cambiamenti climatici, di impronta ambientale, di riutilizzo degli scarti del processo produttivo. Parallelamente alla parte scientifica due “engineering sessions”, una dedicata all’automazione e alla digitalizzazione della produzione di pelle, e l’altra alle novità di macchinari e attrezzature. Adiacente alla sala congressi, anche un’area espositiva dove una trentina di aziende hanno scelto di allestire dei veri e propri stand informativi.

Per offrire l’opportunità di presentare i propri lavori di ricerca ad un maggior numero di ricercatori, gli organizzatori hanno inaugurato un nuovo formato che ha riscosso molto successo per la rapidità di ogni intervento: una presentazione scientifica veloce di tre minuti seguita da un approfondimento nelle sessioni poster previste (denominata speed session).

Tra le relazioni chiave Thomas Yu, IULTCS President del Congresso, oltre alla Heidemann Lecture affidata al prof. Fashion and traceability, the new challenge

Moda e tracciabilità, la nuova sfida IN AUMENTO LE RICHIESTE DI CERTIFICAZIONE DELLE ORIGINI DELLA PELLE Sono sempre di più le concerie italiane ed estere che affrontano la sfida della tracciabilità e lavorano per raggiungere i più elevati standard di trasparenza riguardo all’origine delle materie prime impiegate nei loro processi produttivi.

Acquisire dei dati precisi e completi sull’origine delle pelli grezze permette di soddisfare in modo esauriente le richieste da parte della clientela.

Secondo recenti studi, oltre il 60% dei consumatori richiede l’origine della pelle e una percentuale superiore al 30% sarebbe persino disposta a pagare un prezzo superiore, se ne conoscesse la provenienza. Un’azienda che costruisce un sistema di tracciabilità, oltre a garantirsi un ciclo di lavoro verificabile in qualsiasi momento e in ogni situazione necessaria, si mette al riparo anche dalle possibili contestazioni da parte della propria clientela.

Come tutte le procedure legate alla ricerca di una sempre maggiore sostenibilità, anche la tracciabilità rappresenta oggi un importante fattore di competitività per le imprese e sempre maggior importanza rivestono gli strumenti in grado di attestare oggettivamente le prestazioni delle aziende, come le certificazioni rilasciate da enti indipendenti qualificati. Certificare la tracciabilità delle pelli è peraltro una prassi abbastanza complicata: le difficoltà nel reperire le informazioni a monte sono molte, ma sono sempre di più i brand e le case di moda che spingono i propri fornitori a garantire che le pelli grezze provengano da fonti eticamente accettabili e sostenibili. La ricerca di trasparenza del mercato riguarda il grado di controllo che le concerie hanno sulle proprie forniture, compresa la conoscenza dei paesi di origine delle pelli, dei macelli e degli allevamenti da cui provengono.

Ma qual è il valore della tracciabilità della pelle per le griffe che la utilizzano nei loro accessori moda? “La trasparenza della filiera è fondamentale - ha dichiarato Sonia Liani in rappresentanza della maison del gruppo Kering, intervenendo a un convegno dedicato - Sapere esattamente tutto ciò che succede nel processo che intercorre dall’allevamento al prodotto finito, avere sotto controllo questo lungo percorso con sicurezza e trasparenza, conferisce certamente un valore aggiunto al prodotto finito. A company that builds a traceability system, in addition to guaranteeing a verifiable work cycle at any time and in any necessary situation, also protects itself from possible customer complaints.

Like all the procedures connected to a constantly rising sustainability, today traceability is also an important factor in the competitiveness of companies and the instruments able to objectively certify the performance of companies, such as certifications issued by qualified independent bodies, are becoming increasingly important. Certifying leather traceability is also a fairly complicated practice: the difficulties in finding upstream information are many, but there are increasingly more brands and fashion houses that push their suppliers to ensure that

raw hides come from ethically acceptable and sustainable sources. The search for market transparency concerns the degree of control that tanneries have on their own supplies, including knowing the countries of origin of the hides, slaughterhouses and farms from which they originate.

But what is the leather traceability value for the brands that use it in their fashion accessories? “The transparency of the supply chain is fundamental - said Sonia Liani representing the Kering group’s maison, speaking during a conference dedicated to this issue Knowing exactly what happens in the process from livestock to the finished product, having this long journey under control with security and transparency, certainly gives an added value to the finished product.

Both schemes define the relative rating which specifies the traceability degree of

raw materials. The certificate specifies a rating (score) and a summary judgment (sufficient, good, excellent, first-class) that expresses the degree of control that the tannery has on what it purchases, in terms of leather traceability (countries and names of slaughterhouses and farms). The final rating is calculated by mapping all raw material purchase orders over 12 months. The certification schemes are applicable to any tanning company, regardless of the production cycle that is carried out (it can be applied to producers of finished leather or even semi-finished products), and the certification is applicable in Italy and also in European or non-EU countries with qualified ICEC inspectors.

Traceability and blockchain

Traceability is an increasingly pressing need in the fashion industry, which is now also interested in blockchain to protect its data. Initially conceived and applied to transfer bitcoins, blockchain is a technology protected by a series of complex algorithms that guarantee data integrity and security making it an extremely useful tool for two fundamental requirements of the industry: singoli prodotti”. Gli schemi di certificazione sono applicabili a qualsiasi azienda conciaria, indipendentemente dal ciclo produttivo che viene realizzato (si può applicare a produttori di pelli finite o anche di semilavorati), e la certificazione è applicabile in Italia e anche nei paesi europei o extra UE con ispettori qualificati ICEC. Tracciabilità e blockchain La tracciabilità è una esigenza sempre più pressante nell’industria della moda che per proteggere i propri dati oggi si sta interessando anche alla blockchain. Inizialmente concepita e applicata ai trasferimenti di bitcoin, la blockchain è una tecnologia protetta da una serie di complessi algoritmi che garantiscono l’integrità e la sicurezza dei dati che la rendono uno strumento di estrema utilità per quelle che oggi sono due esigenze fondamentali dell’industria: la tracciabilità del prodotto lungo la filiera di produzione e distribuzione e naturalmente la prevenzione della contraffazione.

L’elemento innovativo consiste nel fatto che se da una parte i membri della rete possono avere accesso alle informazioni contenute, a seconda della tipologia di permessi e “chiavi” a disposizione, dall’altra non possono danneggiarle o manometterle. L’industria della moda è oggettivamente frammentata in numerosissimi attori. L’applicazione della blockchain alla catena di produzione e/o di distribuzione di un’azienda permette l’individuazione certa dei diversi attori “mappati” come componenti della rete.

Tracciata la filiera delle materie prime, si può arrivare a pezzi numerati da un codice digitale o un token di cui si segue il percorso: la memorizzazione dei dati permette di sapere con certezza la collocazione fisica in tempo reale, lo stato di spedizione e consegna, con possibilità di un controllo capillare a scapito di furti e/o perdita di merce per qualsiasi ragione. Product authenticity The blockchain technology provides help to the biggest fashion names even to guarantee the product authenticity.

The luxury giant LVMH recently announced that it is ready to launch a blockchain platform to authenticate its products, which should initially concern brands like Louis Vuitton and

The tanning sector has for some time gone down the road of voluntary certification in order to effectively prove its commitment in terms of quality and sustainability. It is often essential for the tanneries that work with fashion brands, and it is obviously a competitive factor; but it also means taking responsibility.

We will go into detail in regard to leather traceability certification with Sabrina Frontini, director of ICEC, the Italian Certification Institute for the Leather Sector.

Is there a high demand for this type of certification?

“Traceability certification is definitely the most requested by

Sabrina Frontini Entriamo nei dettagli della certificazione di tracciabilità delle pelli con Sabrina Frontini, direttore di ICEC, l’Istituto di certificazione per l’area pelle italiano.

C’è richiesta di questo tipo di certificazione?

“La certificazione di tracciabilità è sicuramente la più richiesta ultimamente dai brand. Insieme alle certificazioni che coprono la parte ambientale (es. ISO 14001), sociale e di salute e sicurezza nei luoghi di lavoro (es. OHSAS18001). Sono tutti temi inerenti la sostenibilità e la trasparenza della catena di fornitura, che i brand

What are the motivations that lead a tannery to request it?

“Sometimes it is tanneries that request it, sometimes it is brands - especially luxury brands and high-end brands - that want it applied by their suppliers. The needs for traceability application, which means being able to have information on the countries and places the leathers come from (that is to say, slaughterhouses and farms) are linked to the risk management by the companies providing the supplies, and to the willingness to be transparent about their supplies all the way down to the final customer”.

What are the main adavantages of obtaining it?

“To manage leather traceability through a third-party certification, that is to say through a Certification Body (such as ICEC), enables tanneries to be verified by competent staff, according to complete schemes approved by the sector, maintaining the confidentiality of the data that are examined, and that are sensitive from a commercial point of view. Downstream customers will be guaranteed traceability through the ad hoc certifications that are needed for that purpose”.

How many companies have already obtained it?

“Around 40 certifications have already been issued by ICEC with the above-mentioned TS’s (both in Italy and abroad).

And several tanneries have obtained more than one because they are product certifications and refer to specific items. Many others are being applied, at least another twenty, since, as I said above, both tanneries and luxury brands are working to obtain these certificates”.

It must be difficult for tanneries and certification bodies to

“A volte sono le concerie a richiederla, a volte sono i brand in particolare del lusso e fascia alta a volerla applicata da parte dei loro fornitori. Le necessità di applicazione della tracciabilità, che significa essere in grado di avere informazioni sui paesi e luoghi di origine delle pelli (ovvero macelli ed allevamenti) sono legate alla gestione dei rischi delle aziende relative agli approvvigionamenti, e alla volontà di essere trasparenti nelle proprie forniture fino al cliente finale”.

Quali i principali vantaggi di ottenerla?

“Gestire la tracciabilità delle pelli attraverso una certificazione di terzo tipo, ovvero attraverso un Ente di Certificazione (come ICEC), consente alla conceria di essere verificata da personale competente, secondo schemi completi ed approvati dal settore, mantenendo la riservatezza sui dati che vengono visionati, e che sono sensibili da un punto di vista commerciale. Il cliente a valle avrà le garanzie di tracciabilità attraverso le certificazioni ad hoc che servono a tal fine”.

Quante sono le aziende che l’hanno già ottenuta?

“Sono circa una quarantina le certificazioni già rilasciate da ICEC coi TS citati (sia in Italia che all’estero). E diverse concerie ne hanno ottenuta più di una poiché sono certificazioni di prodotto e si riferiscono a specifici articoli. In corso di applicazione ce ne sono molte altre, almeno un’altra ventina, in quanto come detto sia concerie che brand del lusso stanno lavorando per ottenere questi certificati”.

Deve essere difficile per le concerie e per i certificatori ottenere i dati e le informazioni necessari. Come ci si riesce?

“E’ così. Solo dopo anni di lavoro si è riuscito a fare capire alla filiera a monte delle concerie (macelli, allevamenti, intermediari commerciali, produttori di semilavorati), l’importanza di fornire queste informazioni. Ci sono parecchi problemi legati sia alla riservatezza intrinseca dei questi dati che si raccolgono, sia alla loro effettiva reperibilità. I dati di origine seguono la carne ma non obbligatoriamente la pelle, quindi non è detto che ci siano e che vengano trasmessi. Inoltre, selezioni per scelta e non per origine, produzioni di croste, e moltissimi altri fattori possono rendere critica la reperibilità dei dati e la riferibilità degli stessi ai lotti di pellami acquistati. Quindi nella applicazione della tracciabilità bisogna avere schemi affidabili, e fare controlli attenti a tutti questi aspetti.

Non è uno schema semplice, ma ICEC ha creato uno strumento di mappatura documentale che sta dando davvero ottimi risultati tenendo conto di tutte le criticità accennate”.

Quali sono i tempi e i costi di questa Certificazione?

“Per fare una certificazione di tracciabilità si analizzano requisiti di sistema, prerequisiti legislativi e una mappa di ordini di acquisto di almeno 12 mesi che si porta dietro tutte le informazioni che la conceria è riuscita a recuperare in modo documentato.

La verifica può prevedere anche il controllo in produzione presso la conceria. Per fare tutto questo, annualmente, la conceria viene sottoposta ad un audit che può variare dalla mezza alla giornata intera. Per costi e preventivi è necessario rivolgersi a ICEC”.

Therefore, when applying traceability, one must have reliable models and do checks that take into account all these aspects. It is not a simple model, but ICEC has created a documental mapping tool that is giving excellent results taking into account all the abovementioned problems”.

How long does this Certification take and what are its costs?

“In order to carry out a traceability certification, system requirements are analyzed, legislative prerequisites and a mapping of purchase orders of at least 12 months that contains all the information that tanneries were able to recoverin a documented manner.

Verification can also include production control at tanneries.

In order to do all this, annually, tanneries undergo an audit that can last from half a day to the whole day. For costs and estimates it is necessary to contact ICEC”.

Last year Chinese leather shoe production fell by 19%, going from 4.4 billion pairs in 2017 to 3.6 billion pairs in 2018 which, albeit against the still huge volumes, represent an important downturn. The use of leather in the luxury leather goods sector, instead, is still growing, while leather clothing is stagnant. Tanners are worried about the slowdown in the automotive sector: last year, car sales in China have turned out in decrease (-4%) for the first time in twenty years. In mostra, come sempre, la variegata offerta di pelli, prodotti chimici, componenti e macchinari per l’industria conciaria di circa un migliaio di espositori distribuiti su otto padiglioni, compresi venti gruppi collettivi stranieri tra cui anche quello italiano guidato da Assomac, l’associazione dei costruttori di macchine per l’area pelle.

La fiera ancora una volta consentirà di accendere i riflettori sulle sfide dell’industria della pelle cinese che sta vivendo una fase di transizione. In questo momento le aspettative legate alla fiera di Shanghai sono condizionate da varie situazioni, in primis lo stato di sofferenza dell’industria conciaria cinese legato alle normative antinquinamento, ma più in generale alla stagnazione della domanda globale di pelli che si riflette in un livello di prezzi troppo basso che paradossalmente non favorisce il settore conciario.

Anche i dati statistici confermano il rallentamento del mercato. La produzione di scarpe in pelle cinesi ha registrato un calo del 19% lo scorso anno, passando da 4,4 miliardi di paia del 2017 a 3,6 miliardi di paia nel 2018 che, sia pure a fronte di volumi che restano enormi, rappresenta una flessione importante. L’impiego della pelle nel settore della pelletteria di lusso invece cresce ancora, mentre l’abbigliamento in pelle è stagnante. A preoccupare i conciatori è il rallentamento del settore automotive: lo scorso anno le vendite di auto in Cina sono risultate in calo (-4%) per la prima volta dopo vent’anni. Un’altra sfida è rappresentata dalla guerra commerciale con gli Stati Uniti. Il braccio di ferro fra Pechino e Washington oggi fa molta paura a tutti gli operatori del settore a livello globale, anche perché va ad aggiungersi a situazioni critiche già note come la chiusura forzata delle concerie che non riescono ad adeguarsi alle normative ambientali, la competizione dei paesi asiatici confinanti e quella dei materiali alternativi alla pelle, che si fa sentire sempre di più in particolare nel segmento calzature. Da questo punto di vista, va detto che gli organizzatori della fiera (APLF) insieme alla China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) stanno lavorando moltissimo sulla promozione fieristica, in particolare nei segmenti legati agli interni di auto, all’arredamento imbottito e nei confronti dei paesi Asean, in primis il Vietnam che è il competitor numero uno della Cina ma deve importare il 70% della pelle che necessita. Tra gli eventi collaterali della fiera, segnaliamo in particolare la “Shake-up Conference” che riunirà esperti di pelli, calzature e pelletteria per discutere del futuro del settore. E’ previsto un primo panel di relazioni, intitolato “Come trasformare il ruolo del conciatore” ed un secondo panel che affronterà il tema “Perché i designers non stanno usando la pelle” che prenderà avvio dalla constatazione di come la pelle sia uno dei tanti materiali sostenibili a diposizione dei creatori di moda e si cercherà di capire come cambiare questa situazione. Per assistere alla conferenza, che si terrà il secondo giorno di fiera, il 4 settembre, dalle 14 alle 16, occorre registrarsi ma l’accesso è libero.

From this point of view, it must be said that the organisers of the (APLF) fair together with the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) are working hard on trade fair promotions, particularly in segments related to car interiors, upholstered furniture and Asean countries, primarily Vietnam, which is China’s number one competitor but which must import 70% of the skin it needs. HUGE INVESTMENTS IN THE BRAND NEW INDUSTRIAL PARKS DEDICATED TO LEATHER AWAIT INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS THAT BET ON THE GROWTH OF A COUNTRY WHICH IS SET TO BECOME THE MOST IMPORTANT MANUFACTURING HUB BY 2025 Ethiopia is increasingly becoming a land of great opportunities, above all thanks to the huge investments made over the last few years to develop modern and efficient Industrial Areas, capable of receiving international investments.

According to Lelise Neme, CEO of Ethiopia Industrial Park Development Corporation, the country has invested around 1.3 billion dollars to build a dozen industrial districts with the clear aim of transforming the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in one of the most important manufacturing centres of the continent (and not just that) by 2025.

A project that has already delivered results considering that in September 2017 three industrial parks (Hawassa, Bole Lemi and Eastern Zone) generated $ 248 million in assets deriving from the export of various products.

The philosophy behind the growth of these industrial citadel is very clear: strengthen the economy of scale and production efficiency so as to increase exports, always maintaining the highest environmental standards thanks to the use of energy originating from renewable sources and technologies that enable a dispersion and discharge of liquids equal to zero.

L’Etiopia si dimostra sempre più terra di grandi opportunità, soprattutto grazie agli ingenti investimenti degli ultimi anni per sviluppare Zone Industriali moderne ed efficienti, in grado di accogliere investimenti internazionali.

Secondo Lelise Neme, amministratore delegato dell’Ethiopia Industrial Park Development Corporation, il Paese ha impiegato una cifra che si aggira intorno ai 1,3 miliardi di dollari per costruire una dozzina di distretti industriali con lo scopo, ben chiaro, di trasformare la Repubblica Democratica Federale Etiope in uno dei centri manifatturieri più importanti del continente (e non solo) entro il 2025.

Un progetto che ha già portato i suoi frutti se si considera che a settembre 2017 tre parchi industriali (Hawassa, Bole Lemi e Eastern Zone) hanno generato un patrimonio di 248 milioni di dollari derivati dall’esportazione di vari prodotti.

Molto chiara la filosofia alla base della crescita di queste cittadelle industriali: potenziare l’economia di scala e l’efficenza produttiva così da far crescere le esportazioni, mantenendo sempre altissimi gli standard ambientali grazie all’utilizzo di energia proveniente da fonti rinnovabili e alle tecnologie che consentono dispersione e scarico di liquidi pari a zero.

Perché molti marchi hanno creduto nella promessa etiope (vedi Vf, Tesco, H&M, Guess, Mark Fisher, Levi’s, Gap, Asos, s.Oliver, Alpinestars, La Sportiva, JCPenney, Primark…) e perché altri dovrebbero seguire? Intanto per la promettente crescita economica che, negli ultimi 14 anni, ha raggiunto la doppia cifra, oltre ai 4,2 miliardi di dollari di investimenti stranieri diretti degli ultimi 5 anni. Una situazione politica stabile che, con il nuovo governo insediatosi circa un anno fa, promette di proseguire negli investimenti infrastrutturali (rete ferroviaria sempre più ramificata e a basso costo, 46 rotte cargo aeree che coprono i 5 continenti, crescita degli impianti per la produzione di energia rinnovabile) e che conta nei prossimi anni di favorire l’ingresso di investimenti privati in settori chiave come le telecomunicazioni, l’aviazione e la logistica. Da non tralasciare un costo del lavoro e dell’energia fra i più bassi al mondo.

A tutto ciò si aggiunge l’ampio pacchetto di incentivi per promuovere l’accesso al mercato e un’efficiente operatività.

Because in the last 14 years, the promising economic growth has reached the double-digit, in addition to the 4.2 billion dollars of direct foreign investments of the last 5 years. L’Etiopia, infatti, ricopre il settimo posto nella graduatoria mondiale dell’allevamento di bovini (60 milioni di capi per 110 milioni di piedi quadri di grezzo) e altrettanti milioni di pecore e capre (per 80 milioni di piedi quadri). Le pelli finite oscillano fra i 120 e i 135 milioni di piedi quadri, di cui il 50% destinato all’export.

A new leather fair In Egitto nasce la Pan will be created in African Leather Fair Egypt: Pan African Leather Fair A new, great leather fair will debut next year in Cairo, Egypt, exactly from 19 to 21 June 2020. An initiative that will avail itself of the Hong Kong APLF team’s knowledge of the international market, in collaboration with Informa Exhibitions. It is created with the ambition to become the commercial platform of the leather industry and market for the Middle East and Africa.

After all, many are the North African country’s strengths.

It is already considered an industrial hub for the whole region thanks to its strategic position and its advanced public transportation infrastructure. According to the London financial company Standard Chartered’s estimates, Egypt, with its 100 million inhabitants and a GDP that is growing at +8% , is a country with great potential, destined to become the seventh global economy by 2030 also thanks to the very many favourable trade agreements with the EU, The Comesa Area in Africa, Turkey, Mercosur in South America and many other countries all over the world.

“We live in hard times. It’s complicated and the justified doubt arises that a structural rather than conjunctural crisis is underway. A real identity crisis of the leather. We are disoriented by the massive introduction of alternative materials, by requests that distort the intrinsic values of our products and being by now one of the sectors with the highest rate of product customization. We must go back and convince our customers to use leather”.

This is how the president of UNIC, Gianni Russo, opened his report at the annual assembly of tanners in which the need to fight the war made on leather with paradoxical accusations, misleading campaigns based on wrong and sometimes ridiculous assumptions.

We feel the need to highlight the paradox that when the leather is called into question, there is a proposal to massively replace it with synthetic materials of which we just know too well the negative side effects, disregarding the millennial expression of naturalness, durability and creativity of the leather itself. To oppose this wave of falseness, UNIC has recently

Così il presidente UNIC, Gianni Russo, ha aperto la sua relazione all’annuale assemblea dei conciatori in cui è chiaramente emersa la necessità di contrastare la guerra alla pelle e al cuoio mossa con accuse paradossali, campagne fuorvianti, basate su assunti errati e a volte ridicoli.

La necessità di evidenziare il paradosso per cui nel momento in cui la pelle viene messa in discussione, ne si propone la massiccia sostituzione con materiali sintetici di cui si conoscono bene i negativi effetti collaterali, disconoscendo la millenaria espressione di naturalità, durabilità e creatività della pelle stessa.

Per contrastare questa ondata di falsità UNIC ha recentemente affidato l’incarico a una importante agenzia di comunicazione, che opera a livello internazionale, per una campagna che costruisca un percorso strategico di advertising in grado di contrastare i pregiudizi sempre più diffusi. “Collaboreremo - continua Russo - anche con Leather Naturally - gruppo che raccoglie oltre un centinaio di conciatori, macelli, produttori chimici - che darà vita a simili azioni di sensibilizzazione”.

Inoltre proseguirà l’ottimo lavoro già in atto con i corsi di promozione e formazione per studenti e manager. I Roadshow che solo nel 2019 hanno toccato Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Canton, Londra, New York, Madrid, Stoccolma e Stoccarda. Sul tema insistono anche i Vicepresidenti. For Piero Rosati - Incas tannery “our mistake has always been to satisfy only customer needs, while the mother of all battles consists in making the final consumer understand the importance of leather products and of a material that has been representing the last link in a sustainable and circular supply chain for centuries”.

Graziano Balducci – president of the Italian Leather Research Institute (SSIP) insists: “Until now we have not been able to tell a truth known since prehistoric times, namely that the world of tanning transforms a material that otherwise would become refusal. We must clearly say that today at sea there are no islands of leather, but of plastic. And of course we must continue to innovate tanning by looking for increasingly natural tanning agents”.

Alessandro Liprandi Bonaudo tannery, and Rino Mastrotto - close the debate, returning to the economic situation. The fist one is not very optimistic: “A good part of consumption (almost 50%) is Asia’s prerogative, which has different buying habits from Western ones,

Chiudono il dibattito, tornando sulla situazione economica, Alessandro Liprandi - conceria Bonaudo e Rino Mastrotto. Il primo non è molto ottimista: “Buona parte dei consumi (quasi il 50%) è appannaggio dell’Asia che ha abitudini d’acquisto diverse da quelle occidentali, meno votate a qualità e artigianato. Inoltre la maggior facilità del taglio del sintetico e l’imperante successo delle sneaker non sembrano aiutare il mondo della pelle”.

Di segno opposto il pensiero di Mastrotto che non vuole arrendersi alla crisi: “La pelle continuerà a essere utilizzata. Non basta più dire che noi italiani siamo bravi, dobbiamo trovare la strada per il futuro della pelle che probabilmente passa per un calo dei volumi produttivi e per un aumento della personalizzazione”.

DAI NUOVI LABORATORI PROGRAM STARTS FROM DI POZZUOLI THE NEW LABORATORIES PARTE IL PROGRAMMA METAL FREE OF POZZUOLI After the organisational rearrangement and the transfer to the new head offices in Pozzuoli, the recovery plan of the Italian Leather Research Institute gets to the heart of the matter aiming to expand its range of services to Italian tanneries, strengthened by the modernisation of its laboratories and the investments in technical equipment and research infrastructures.

The latest news is the establishment of a Special Program called “Metal-free” (MF) with the aim of investigating the technical aspects of a topic of great relevance for the tanning industry. The Italian Leather Research Institute has announced the start of a market cognitive action concerning the current offer of leather prepared with metalfree tanning procedures that will allow to go into the details of the topic and therefore shed light on a sector where the confusion is still great. Since, in fact, the definition of Metal Free leather derives from a precise indication on the concentration of the Tanning Metals reported in the UNI EN 15987 standard bearing the “Key definitions for the leather trade”, the Italian Leather

Entra nel vivo il piano di rilancio della Stazione Sperimentale che, dopo il riassetto organizzativo e il trasferimento nella nuova sede di Pozzuoli, ora punta ad ampliare l’offerta dei servizi alle concerie italiane, forte dell’ammodernamento dei suoi laboratori e degli investimenti nelle attrezzature tecniche e nelle infrastrutture di ricerca. L’ultima novità è l’istituzione di un Programma Speciale denominato “Metal-free” (MF) con lo scopo di approfondire gli aspetti tecnici di un argomento di grande attualità per l’industria conciaria. La Stazione Sperimentale ha annunciato l’avvio di un’azione conoscitiva del mercato relativa all’attuale offerta di pellami preparati con procedure di concia esenti da metalli che permetterà di entrare nel dettaglio dell’argomento e quindi di fare chiarezza in un comparto dove la confusione è ancora grande. Poiché, infatti, la definizione di pellame Metal Free deriva da una precisa indicazione sulla concentrazione dei Metalli Concianti riportata nella norma UNI EN 15987 recante le “Definizioni chiave per il commercio del cuoio”, la Stazione Sperimentale si è posta in primis l’obiettivo di monitorare se i prodotti attualmente preparati con tali tecnologie, rispondano, nei fatti, alle prescrizioni previste nella suddetta normativa tecnica. Per questo è stato predisposto un protocollo di intesa con il laboratorio ACE (Analytical Chemistry for the Environment) del dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche dell’università degli studi di Napoli Federico II che permetterà di offrire alle imprese interessate il monitoraggio dei propri articoli denominati Metal Free, ad un costo competitivo, e secondo procedure accreditate secondo la norma ISO 17025.

Research Institute has in the first place set itself the goal to monitor whether the products currently prepared with these technologies meet, in practice, the requirements set forth in the aforementioned technical legislation. “Senza mezze misure - Pelle e Sostenibilità, il connubio perfetto”: questo il titolo del convegno AICC Toscana, svoltosi lo scorso 5 luglio al Teatro della Compagnia di Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa). Un tema di grande attualità che ha dato la possibilità di presentare alcuni studi che confermano la natura sostenibile della pelle sulla base di criteri tecnici ed economici, indicando le nuove strade della ricerca per un sempre minor impatto ambientale.

Dopo i saluti del sindaco di Castelfranco, Gabriele Toti, il Convegno si è aperto con un intervento del presidente AICC Roberto Mariano Mecenero che è entrato subito in argomento ricordando come per i conciatori sia un motivo di orgoglio riutilizzare uno scarto dell’industria alimentare, quale è la pelle, per farne una materia prima preziosa che viene scelta dalle più importanti griffe della moda, ma sottolineando anche come da parte del settore occorra ancora molto impegno per vincere i pregiudizi di chi ancora guarda a questo comparto industriale con diffidenza. La parola è quindi passata alla vicepresidente AICC Franca Nuti che, in qualità di membro della Commissione Ambiente di IULTCS, ha riferito ai colleghi i temi salienti emersi al recente Congresso mondiale svoltosi a Dresda a fine giugno. La Nuti ha sottolineato in particolare l’importanza della presentazione della seconda edizione di uno studio Unido intitolato “The framework for sustainable leather manufacturing” che ha introdotto concetti chiave come l’impronta ambientale (Carbon Footprint), la LCA (valutazione del ciclo di vita dei prodotti), la lista delle sostanze chimiche soggette a restrizione (RSL), nel quale si invita a pensare al fine vita di un prodotto già in fase di progettazione. I concetti generali su cui bisogna ancora lavorare in fase produttiva sostiene la ricerca Unido - sono la riduzione del consumo di risorse, la biodegradabilità, il basso impatto ambientale e l’alta efficienza dei processi.

Degli stessi temi ha parlato anche l’ingegner Paolo Masoni di Ecoinnovazione che ha presentato uno studio su “Le sinergie tra Life Cycle Assessment e le azioni per l’economia circolare”.

Masoni ha spiegato come la valutazione del ciclo di vita dei prodotti serva ad individuare i punti critici ambientali su cui intervenire, oltre che per quantificare l’impronta ambientale.

“Without half measures Leather and Sustainability, the perfect combination”: this is the title of the AICC Tuscany Conference, held last 5 July at the Teatro della Compagnia of Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa).

A highly topical issue that has given the opportunity to present some studies that confirm the sustainable nature of leather based on technical and economic criteria, indicating the new avenues of research for ever lower environmental impact.

After the greetings of Castelfranco’s mayor, Gabriele Toti, the conference opened with a speech held by AICC’s

president Roberto Mariano Mecenero who immediately entered the discussion recalling how the reuse of waste from the meat industry, as skins and hides, is a source of pride for tanners, who transform it into a precious raw material chosen by the most important fashion labels, but underlining how much effort is still needed on the part of the sector to overcome the prejudices of those who still look at this industrial sector with suspicion.

Commission, told colleagues about the salient issues that emerged at the recent leather chemists World Congress held in Dresden at the end of June. In particular, Nuti spoke of the importance of the second edition of a Unido study entitled “The framework for sustainable leather manufacturing” which introduced key concepts such as the environmental footprint (Carbon Footprint), the LCA (life cycle assessment of products), the list of restricted substances (RSL), in which one is invited to think about the end-of-life of a product already in the planning phase.

The general concepts on which we still have to work in the production phase says Unido research - are the reduction of resource

consumption, biodegradability, low environmental impact and high process efficiency.

The same themes were also discussed by engineer Paolo Masoni of Ecoinnovation who presented a study on “The synergies between Life Cycle Assessment and the actions for the circular economy”.

Masoni explained how the evaluation of the life cycle of the products serves to identify the critical environmental points on which to intervene, as well as to quantify the environmental footprint.

The expert spoke about waste management and the need to stimulate the secondary raw materials market and the reuse of water. “Every intervention to transform scraps/waste into a new resource requires a technological process that

il riutilizzo dell’acqua. “Ogni intervento per trasformare uno scarto/rifiuto in nuova risorsa richiede un processo tecnologico che produce un impatto (consumo di energia, altre risorse, emissioni): occorre quindi verificare con l’LCA che il beneficio ottenuto con la nuova risorsa sia controbilanciato dagli impatti aggiuntivi”. In definitiva, l’economia circolare – ha detto ancora Masoni – intende estendere il valore dei materiali e dei prodotti.

Ciò può permettere anche grandi benefici ambientali potenziali, ma occorre sempre verificarli prima.

Di come “Misurare la sostenibilità: norme, metodi e limiti” ha parlato Tiziana Gambicorti, responsabile del distretto toscano della Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Pelli e delle Materie Concianti. “Il concetto di sostenibilità – ha spiegato – si sostanza attraverso la misura di grandezze reali che

produces an impact (energy consumption, other resources, emissions): it is therefore necessary to verify with the LCA that the benefit obtained with the new resource is counterbalanced by additional impacts”. Ultimately, the circular economy - said Masoni - intends to extend the value of materials and products. This can also allow great potential environmental benefits, but it is necessary to always check them first.

Tiziana Gambicorti, head of the Tuscan district of the Italian Leather Research Institute, spoke of how to “Measure sustainability: norms, methods and limits”.

“The concept of sustainability - she explained - is embodied through the measurement of real quantities concerning resource consumption, waste production, the recovery of by-products and scraps and the characteristics of the goods produced”.

Domenico Castiello of Poteco presented a study that compares the environmental impact of leather production with that of synthetic

materials, in favour of the first one, highlighting in particular the great problem of microplastics for which there is at present no recovery process and which are spread in the environment with enormous damage for the whole planet.

Francesco Spennati from Cuoiodepur presented a paper entitled “Towards a new paradigm for the treatment of tanning wastewater”, while the consultant Unido Sauro Di Sandro spoke of “Exporting Sustainability”. The expert made a roundup of the main tanning districts of the world, from Bangladesh to Argentina, highlighting how some projects for the requalification and relocation of tanneries are giving life to eco-compatible industrial parks like the ones of Robikki (Egypt) and Tuzla (Turkey).

The conference concluded with a summary of the international Leather Naturally initiative which is about to launch a promotional campaign in favour of leather through social media aimed at younger generations.

Francesco Spennati di Cuoiodepur ha presentato una relazione dal titolo “Verso un nuovo paradigma per il trattamento dei reflui conciari”, mentre il consulente Unido Sauro Di Sandro ha parlato di “Esportare la Sostenibilità”.

L’esperto ha fatto una carrellata dei principali distretti conciari del mondo, dal Bangladesh all’Argentina, evidenziando come alcuni progetti di riqualificazione e rilocalizzazione delle concerie stiano dando vita a parchi industriali ecocompatibili come quello di Robikki (Egitto) e di Tuzla (Turchia).

Il Convegno si è concluso con un riepilogo dell’iniziativa internazionale Leather Naturally che sta per lanciare una campagna promozionale a favore della pelle attraverso i social media mirata alle generazioni più giovani.

Promotion Technological service centers have now reached an important milestone, and are being set up in some foreign countries as places of permanent promotion (Vietnam, Pakistan, perhaps Iran). It is becoming increasingly important to consolidate the sense of working together as a sector, with members of the supply chain speaking the same language. Systematizing the whole leather chain is a challenge that must turn Assomac into a “Technological Centre 4.0” of the leatherfootwear industry.

We must be able to do this free from superstructures, bureaucratic procedures, tax pitfalls and duties.”

Promozione Importante il traguardo segnato dai centri di servizio tecnologici che si stanno implementando in alcuni paesi esteri, come luoghi di promozione permanente (Vietnam, Pakistan, forse Iran).

Diventa, inoltre, sempre più importante consolidare il senso di coralità di settore, accrescendo la forza di un linguaggio associativo di filiera. Fare sistema con tutta la filiera pelle è dunque la vera sfida che deve portare Assomac a essere “Piazza Tecnologica 4.0” del settore pelle/calzature.

L’andamento del settore In questo primo semestre le imprese hanno dovuto prendere atto di un forte rallentamento degli ordinativi, cominciato nel 2018, e che impone una considerazione al ribasso dei budget.

Lo scenario non è certo dei più confortanti, e le notizie sui costi del grezzo non infondono ottimismo. Dopo anni di crescita, con incrementi dell’export a due cifre per le macchine per conceria/ calzature/pelletteria, il 2018 ha segnato un brusco raffreddamento delle esportazioni che sono calate complessivamente di circa il 4%. Un calo tutto sommato contenuto ma che avviene in un anno in cui la produzione mondiale di calzatyre rimane sostanzialmente stabile mentre quella dell’auto diminuisce dello 0,8%. Per emergere da un quadro di certo non ottimistico “abbiamo bisogno - conclude Gabriella Marchioni Bocca - di un contesto nel quale poter dare spazio alle nostre capacità innovative, alle nostre qualità indiscusse, alla nostra intuizione che è poi la nostra vera risorsa. Dobbiamo poterlo fare liberi da sovrastrutture, burocrazie, insidie fiscali e dazi”.

Ice water to dry leather Mec Man has taken part in the last Tanning Tech with a great novelty this year too: the patented system Ice Water, a revolutionary system of ice water production. We talk about it with one of the founding partners of the Vicenza company, Marco Agostini.

Can you tell us more specifically what it is?

“IceWater is a new system that completes an innovative modular plant for drying leather made up of 3 components: - the MecGiant vacuum dryer, the largest leather vacuum dryer in the world, with 9.0 tables by 3.4 metres, which considerably increases productivity while maintaining the management costs of a traditional plant with a length of 7.0 metres.

It suffices to think that with a dryer with a length of 9.0 metres, it is possible to achieve the productivity obtained with 2 standard dryers with a length of 7.0 metres while maintaining leather even and natural.

- The Vacuum group IceVacuum, equipped with a liquid ring vacuum pump fed with water, offering countless advantages both in terms of consumption and maintenance, reaching a vacuum of 5mbar even if positioned far away from the dryer, up to a distance of 50 mt.

- And finally, the new IceWater, with a Mec Man patent, which maintains a 7-degree temperature, with a consumption of only 4 KW”.

Why define this patent revolutionary?

“This new system is revolutionary because it keeps water at a constant temperature of 7 degrees, summer and winter, thus guaranteeing leather drying with the highest performance

AT THE UNPAC EVENT IN SANTA CROCE, TWO DOZEN CHEMICAL-TANNING COMPANIES PRESENTED A PREVIEW OF THE NOVELTIES FOR THE 20/21 WINTER SEASON. AT THE TECHNICAL TABLE THERE WAS TALK OF MANAGING CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND WASTEWATER An opportunity to view the first fashion proposals of the season developed by a select group of chemical-tanning companies and deal with suppliers and colleagues.

An exhibition dedicated to tanneries but also an opportunity for technical comparison that aims to provide answers to the ever-increasing needs of the finished product market.

It is with this double objective that the 2019 edition of Prossimapelle took place, an event organised by UNPAC (National Union of Italian Tanning Auxiliary Producers) on May 9 at the Tannery Museum of Santa Croce sull’Arno. About twenty exhibitors were present, mainly leather chemical companies associated with UNPAC, along with some technology manufacturers and service providers.

The exhibition was aimed at presenting fashion proposals developed for the A/W 20-21 season as well as process and service innovations for the tanning world. A wide range of new items developed on the basis of the trends indicated

There were instead new positive trends in Switzerland, which recorded +11% in quantity and +23% in value: figures that are connected to its designer label subcontracting activities. The Middle East instead followed a negative trend (United Arab Emirates at -6% in volume), while the Far East grew by +10.3% in value, with a slight drop-off in pairs (-1.3%). Values in the leading markets grew with performances estimated at around +10% (except for Japan with its +5.6%): China (but with a drop in quantity equal to -4.1%), Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan (with -10% in quantity). The same trend with values on the rise (+14.4%) and volumes down (-3.4%) was recorded in North America.

Among the biggest problems in the sector is the domestic market with its persisting negative trend, which was further complicated by a winter season that was relatively mild and which led to a drop in quantities (-2.3%) and in purchases (-3.8%).

L’inverno assoluto Lanxess ha presentato le sue previsioni moda e i colori per la stagione invernale 2020/21. Si parte con il tema “Albori” che propone toni intensi già apparsi nelle stagioni precedenti ma ancora attuali come Cabaret, un rosa eccitante e passionale ma non troppo aggressivo.

Il tema “Inverno Assoluto” suggerisce tonalità profonde e opposte una all’altra come il blu Parisian Night e l’arancio metallico di Fruit Punch che si illuminano a vicenda.

La gamma cromatica di “Forza Generatrice” spazia dal blu nautico all’ocra dorato, tutti toni facilmente abbinabili fra loro, mentre “Istanti di Transizione” punta su verde metallico, giallo sulfureo e ghiacciolo alla fragola.

THE ACTIVITY OF THE LEATHER CHEMISTS ASSOCIATION CONTINUES NONSTOP, BY ORGANISING SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES ON THE MOST CURRENT TOPICS Promoting scientific culture in the leather world, creating contacts between the various employees of the leather industry and actively supporting school education, remains the main objective of the Italian Leather Chemists Association. The numerous training seminars, organised by the AICC in the three districts, often see a notable participation, thanks to the presence as lecturers of talented professionals and to the choice of very current themes, such as sustainability, water purification, chemistry, norms and technology. Many of these themes are discussed in technical conferences, annual meetings attended by experts from the various sectors: the calendar of the conferences of 2019, which opened on July 5 in Tuscany, will continue on October 11 in Campania and on November 15 in Veneto.

The communication is managed through newsletters distributed to the members, which inform about the activity carried out and about news related to the tanning world. Information is also provided in English through news sent to foreign trade associations and newspapers, in order to present Italian activities in an international context. In Italy stands out the close collaboration with the

I numerosi seminari formativi, organizzati dall’AICC nei tre distretti, vedono sempre una notevole partecipazione, grazie alla presenza come docenti di valenti professionisti ed alla scelta di tematiche molto attuali, come sostenibilità, depurazione acque, chimica, norme e tecnologia. Molti di questi temi sono approfonditi nei convegni tecnici, appuntamenti annuali a cui intervengono esperti dei vari settori: il calendario dei convegni del 2019, apertosi il 5 luglio in Toscana, proseguirà l’11 ottobre in Campania e il 15 novembre in Veneto. La comunicazione è gestita tramite newsletter distribuite ai soci, che informano sull’attività svolta e su notizie relative al mondo conciario.

Viene curata inoltre l’informazione in lingua inglese attraverso notizie inviate ad Associazioni e giornali di settore esteri, al fine di presentare le attività italiane in un contesto internazionale. In Italia spicca la stretta collaborazione con la testata Ars Tannery che segue con grande attenzione le attività di AICC. Ma l’attività di informazione e divulgazione non si esaurisce qui: lo scorso anno, ad esempio, gli associati hanno ricevuto un libretto riportante lo stato dell’arte sui metodi di prova internazionali, che viene periodicamente aggiornato, assieme all’annuario soci con tutti i riferimenti dei membri della comunità scientifica AICC. Sul sito di AICC sono inoltre consultabili i lavori presentati nel corso di convegni ed eventi formativi. Recentemente, l’AICC si è aperta al mondo dei social media attraverso una pagina Facebook ed un profilo LinkedIn. Le quote associative annuali sono prevalentemente destinate a finanziare l’assegnazione di borse di studio e libri per gli studenti meritevoli delle scuole superiori ad indirizzo conciario presenti in Campania, Toscana, Veneto, e contribuiscono anche a varie attività legate ai giovani ed alla cultura conciaria.

L’AICC si è inoltre attivata per cercare di salvaguardare il destino dell’Istituto Baldracco di Torino, già sede dell’Associazione fino a metà anni ‘90. L’attività formativa svolta recentemente ed in programma per i prossimi mesi è focalizzata su argomenti quali “Difettistica delle pelli”, “MRSL e altri prodotti inquinanti nei prodotti chimici conciari” (in collaborazione con UNPAC), “Misurazione pelli, aggiornamenti normativi ed esiti delle prove”, Presentazione della biblioteca AICC, “Normazione, metodi analitici di interesse conciario: aggiornamenti”, “Significato ed importanza del pH nelle fasi di bagnato e di rifinizione”.

ABSTRACT Leather quality inspection is very important in assessing the effective cutting value that can be obtained from the leather. Current practice involves an expert to inspect each piece of leather individually and detect defects manually. However, such a manual inspection is highly subjective and varies quite considerably from one assessor to another. Often this subjectivity leads to dispute between the buyer and the seller of the leathers and hence attempts are made to automate this. Automatic leather defect classification is a challenging research prob-

lem due to the difficulties that arise when segmenting defects from the leather background and determining the characteristics that describethe defects objectively.

The present study describes application of machine vision system to capture leather surface images and the novel multi-level thresholding algorithm to segment defective and non-defective regions of leather followed by texture feature extraction to objectively quantify the leather surface defects. A dataset consisting of 90 leather images comprising 20 good leather and 50 defective samples has been used in the study. Experimental results on the leather defect image library database achieved an accuracy of 90% using neural network as classifier, confirming potential of using the proposed system for automatic leather defect classification.

INTRODUCTION In the changing global scenario, the entire manufacturing sector is continually pressing for higher product quality and improved productivity to meet both customer demands and to reduce the costs associated with rejections. The increased demands

for objectivity, reliability and effectiveness have necessitated the introduction of accurate automated inspection systems even in tradition-based leather industry. Surface defects downgrade the quality of the leathers. In general, defects on hides and skins are broadly classified as ante-mortem (defects caused before the death of animal), postmortem (defects caused after the death ofthe animal) and processing defects.

The possible type of defects that occur during the lifetime of the animals are brand marks, tick marks, pox marks, insect bite, wounds, scratches, growth marks etc., There may be defects inflicted during flaying of skins due to the flayer’s negligence and the first handlers involved in curing and in some cases by the tanners themselves such as flay cuts, veininess, wrinkles, fat folds, salt stain, lime blast, chrome or dye patches, drawn grain, open cuts, pin hole damage, etc. Apart from these, defects can manifest on leathers due to faulty leather processing methods and harsh process conditions due to extremes in pH, high temperatures and improper usage of acids & alkali and can cause extensive, irreversible grain damage. L’attuale prassi coinvolge un esperto per l’ispezione di ogni singola parte della pelle e l’individuazione manuale dei difetti. Tuttavia, questa ispezione manuale è fortemente soggettiva e varia in modo considerevole da un perito all’altro. Questa soggettività porta spesso a controversie tra l’acquirente e il venditore del pellame, e si stanno pertanto effettuando tentativi per automatizzarla. La classificazione automatica dei difetti della pelle è un impegnativo problema di ricerca, a causa delle difficoltà che insorgono nelle varie tipologie dei difetti dall’origine della pelle e nella determinazione delle caratteristiche che descrivono i difetti in modo oggettivo. Il presente studio descrive l’applicazione di un sistema di visione industriale per acquisire immagini superficiali della pelle, e l’innovativo algoritmo di soglia multilivello per suddividere le aree difettose e non difettose della pelle, a seguito dalla rilevazione delle caratteristiche della texture per quantificare in modo oggettivo i difetti superficiali. Nello studio è stato utilizzato un insieme di dati costituito da 90 immagini di pelli, comprendenti 20 pelli buone e 50 campioni difettosi. I risultati sperimentali sul database di immagini di difetti della pelle hanno

raggiunto un’accuratezza del 90% tramite l’impiego di una rete neurale come classificatore, confermando il potenziale di utilizzo del sistema proposto per la classificazione automatica dei difetti della pelle.

INTRODUZIONE Nello scenario di cambiamenti globali, l’intero settore produttivo sta costantemente premendo per una maggiore qualità dei prodotti e una migliore produttività, per soddisfare le richieste dei clienti e ridurre i costi associati agli scarti. Le crescenti richieste di oggettività, affidabilità ed efficacia hanno reso necessaria l’introduzione di sistemi accurati di ispezione automatizzata persino nell’industria conciaria così legata alla tradizione. I difetti superficiali declassano la qualità del pellame. In generale, i difetti delle pelli pesanti e leggere classificati come antemortem (difetti originati prima della morte dell’animale), post-mortem (difetti originati dopo la morte dell’animale) e difetti di lavorazione. I possibili tipi di difetto che si verificano durante la vita degli animali sono marchi, tagli, buchi, punture d’insetto, ferite, graffi, linee di crescita, ecc. Possono esservi difetti procurati durante lo scuoiamento dell’animale, a causa dell’imperizia dell’operatore e dei primi responsabili coinvolti nella conservazione, e in alcuni casi da parte degli stessi conciatori come tagli, venature, rughe, pieghe di grasso, macchie di sale, macchie di calce, macchie di cromo o tintura, fiore corrugato, tagli aperti, danni da foro ecc. Oltre a questi, i difetti possono manifestarsi nel pellame in

conseguenza di metodi errati di lavorazione, quali valori estremi di pH, temperature elevate e uso improprio di acidi e alcali, che possono provocare danni estesi e irreversibili al fiore. Il sistema manuale di ispezione attualmente in uso si basa sulla conoscenza di un esperto nel rilevare i difetti di ogni singolo esemplare di pelle o cuoio, e classificarlo in base all’area di taglio utilizzabile. Questa ispezione visiva dipende da diversi fattori soggettivi come lo stato di salute psicofisica del perito, condizionato anche dalle aspettative e da considerazioni commerciali. Inoltre, la continua ispezione di un lotto comprendente 1000 esemplari di pelle è noiosamente ripetitiva, e pertanto l’affaticamento può far sì che i difetti passino inosservati, portando a imprecisioni. Il sistema manuale porta spesso a discrepanze tra selezionatori diversi, a causa della sua soggettività. In questo contesto, i sistemi di visione automatizzato si presenta come un’opzione interessante per sostituire i sistemi di ispezione manuale.

Nonostante i progressi tecnologici nell’elaborazione delle immagini e numerosi lavori sull’ispezione automatizzata1 del vetro,2 superfici metalliche,3 piastrelle di ceramica4, alimenti,5,6 legno7 e tessuti,8-10 l’ispezione dei difetti della pelle per la sua classificazione è un problema ancora aperto. Le immagini della pelle possiedono una struttura intrinseca a basso contrasto e con deboli legami tra il fondo e le aree difettose. Molte altre variazioni come colore e luminosità possono cambiare in modo considerevole da un esemplare all’altro. Inoltre, anche la natu-

manual inspection system is based on the expert’s knowledge to detect defects in each piece of skin or leather individually and grade it based on usable cutting area. Such visual inspection depends on several subjective factors such as mental and physical well-being of the assessor and also biased by expectations and business considerations. Moreover, continuous inspection of a lot comprising of 1000 pieces of leather is tediously repetitive and hence fatigue can lead to defects passing unnoticed, leading to inaccuracy. Manual system often leads to inconsistency between different inspectors due to its subjectivity.

In this regard, machine vision systems offer themselves as attractive option to replace subjective manual inspection systems. Despite technological advancements in image processing and numerous works on automated inspection1 of glass,2 metal surfaces, 3 ceramic tiles, 4 food, 5,6 wood 7 and textile fabrics,8-10 automatic inspection of leather defects for grading is yet to be resolved. Leather images have inherent texture with low contrast and weak boundaries between the background and the defective regions. A lot of other variations such as color and brightness may vary quite considerably from one piece to another.

Moreover, the nature of leather defect fetures like shape, size, orientation and varied distribution of defects also increase the complexity of the problem. These problems pose challenge for the development of automated inspection system for leathers. Semiautomatic defect detections methods have been proposed in which defects were marked manualy,11-15 and image analysis was carried out to classify them.

Several other methods16-20 were also evaluated but they use still images of small window size or reduced number of samples, thus very far from industrial operating conditions. Such methods suffer from computational complexity when applied for the whole leather image. In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to derive Fast Convergence Particle Swarm Optimization (FCPSO) algorithm to determine optimal threshold level for segmenting complex leather surface images.

Texture properties were quantified numerically in terms of features extracted from

segmented leather images. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier was used to classify the defective and non-defective leather regions MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials Representative dyed crust leather samples with different defects (10 each) and good leather samples were sourced from leather industry and used in this study. To manage the computational complexity of the defect detection algorithm and optimize the computing speed, each frame was resized to 400 x 600 pixels, without losing the major field of view. In this study, leather images were obtained using specially designed imaging system. During preprocessing, all the images were resized and image quality was enhanced by applying wiener filter.

Image Acquisition System A leather defect detection system was designed and fabricated in such a way to automate the leather inspection for identif ing the surface defects (see Fig. 1).

The leather imaging setup consists of a feed roller, a delivery roller, CCD camera attached to scanning carriage. As the dyed crust leather was conveyed by the rollers, leather gets flattened for better viewing.

Industrial CCD camera moves over the leather surface from left to right and a trigger was activated to move the leather forward based on the distance set (maximum width of the leather). While capturing the image frames, leather was held stationery and hence motion blu ring effect was not seen. The number of image frames varies considerably depending on the size of the leather. A representative set of defective image frames are shown in Fig. 2.

Fast Convergence Particle Swarm Optimization segmentation algorithm was then carried out. Texture features were extracted from the segmented leather images and were given as input to neural network for classifying the defects.

The proposed leather defect detection methodology is shown in Fig. 3.

Image Segmentation Automatic selection of a robust optimum threshold value to segment defective region from the background is a challenging task in leather images. Several studies have been

ra delle caratteristiche dei difetti della pelle quali forma, dimensioni, orientamento e la varia distribuzione dei difetti influenzano la complessità del problema. Questi problemi rappresentano una sfida allo sviluppo di un sistema automatizzato di ispezione delle pelli.

Sono stati proposti metodi di rilevazione dei difetti semiautomatica, in cui tali difetti sono stati segnati a mano,11-15 effettuando l’analisi delle immagini per classificarli. Sono stati inoltre esaminati diversi altri metodi16-20, che però fanno ancora uso di immagini di dimensioni ridotte o di un numero limitato di campioni, pertanto molto distanti dalle condizioni operative industriali. Questi metodi manifestano complessità computazionale quando vengono applicati all’intera immagine della pelle. Nel presente studio, è stato effettuato il tentativo di applicare l’algoritmo FCPSO (fast convergence particle swarm optimisation technique), per determinare il livello ottimale di soglia per la suddivisione di immagini complesse della superficie della pelle. Le proprietà della texture sono state quantificate numericamente in termini di caratteristiche estratte dalle immagini della pelle. È stato utilizzato un classificatore a Rete Neurale Artificiale (ANN) per classificare le aree di pelle difettosa e non difettosa.

MATERIALI E METODI Materiali Sono stati ottenuti dall’industria conciaria e impiegati in questo studio campioni rappresentativi di pelle crust tinta con diversi difetti (10 per ciascuno) e campioni di pelle buona.

Gli algoritmi di elaborazione delle immagini descritti in questo studio sono stati realizzati tramite SCILAB, un software open source.

Sistema di Acquisizione Immagini È stato progettato e realizzato un sistema di rilevazione dei difetti della pelle, in modo da automatizzare l’ispezione della pelle per identificare i difetti superficiali (v. Fig. 1).

Il sistema per l’imaging della pelle consiste in un rullo di alimentazione, un rullo di mandata, una camera CCD collegata al carrello di scansione. Quando la pelle crust tinta è trasportata dai rulli, la pelle viene spianata per una migliore visualizzazione. La camera CCD industriale si sposta sulla superficie della pelle da sinistra verso destra, e si attiva un attuatore per spostare la pelle in avanti a

seconda della distanza impostata (larghezza massma della pelle). Durante l’acquisizione dei fotogrammi, la pelle è stata tenuta ferma e pertanto non sono stati osservati effetti di sfocatura. Il numero di fotogrammi varia in modo rilevante a seconda delle dimensioni della pelle. Un insieme rappresentativo di fotogrammi di difetti è mostrato in Fig. 2.

Analisi delle immagini E’ stata generata un database di immagini contenente fotogrammi di pelle buona e pelle difettosa, con risoluzione per ogni fotogramma di dimensioni 1200x1600 pixel. Per gestire la complessità computazionale dell’algoritmo di rilevazione dei difetti e ottimizzare la velocità di calcolo, ogni fotogramma è stato ridimensionato a 400x600 pixel, senza perdere l’ampiezza del campo visivo. In questo studio, le immagini della pelle sono state ottenute tramite un sistema di acquisizione specificamente progettato. Durante la preelaborazione, tutte le immagini sono state ridimensionate e la qualità delle immagini è stata migliorata tramite l’applicazione del filtro di Wiener. E’ stato poi eseguito l’algoritmo FCPSO. Le caratteristiche della texture sono state estratte dalle immagini suddivise della pelle e sono state sottoposte alla rete neurale per la classificazione dei difetti. La metodologia proposta per la rilevazione dei difetti della pelle è mostrata in Fig. 3.

Suddivisione delle Immagini La selezione automatica di un valore ottimale attendibile di soglia per suddividere le aree difettose dal fondo è un compito impegnativo per le immagini della pelle. Sono stati effettuati diversi studi per affrontare il problema dell’individuazione di valori ottimali di soglia per suddividere le immagini tramite algoritmi ispirati alla biologia.21,22 Nel presente studio, è stata utilizzata la soglia multilivello dell’immagine basata sulla FCPSO. La PSO è una tecnica di ottimizzazione attendibile basata sul movimento e l’intelligence degli sciami, che applica il concetto di interazione sociale alla risoluzione dei problemi.

Utilizza una quantità di particelle che costituiscono uno sciame in movimento nello spazio di ricerca per individuare la soluzione migliore. Ogni particella nello spazio di ricerca adegua il suo tragitto in base dalla sua propria esperienza di movimento e dalle esperienze

di movimento delle altre particelle. Ogni particella tiene traccia della soluzione di maggiore adeguatezza da essa raggiunta fino a quel momento (pbest), e del valore migliore ottenuto fino a quel momento da eventuali particelle nei dintorni di tale particella (gbest).

Nel presente studio, l’immagine della pelle è stata fornita in input. Ogni particella dello sciame è stata rappresentata come l’intensità dell’immagine (da 0 a 255) e l’algoritmo trova come soluzione migliore il valore di soglia ottimale dell’intensità che suddivide i difetti dal fondo della pelle. L’algoritmo di suddivisione FC-PSO così come illustrato nel diagramma di flusso (Fig. 4) si ottiene dall’accelerazione di ogni particella verso i suoi punti pbest e gbest con accelerazioni ponderate ad ogni iterazione. Analizzando immagini varie di difetti della pelle, è stato trovato con l’istogramma (v. Fig. 5b) che il valore di soglia si posiziona nell’intervallo di intensità 100-170 (Lmin e Lmax). Come mostrato in Fig. 5, è stato calcolato il valore ottimale di soglia e le regioni difettose sono state separate dal fondo.

Estrazione di Caratteristiche tramite Analisi della Texture La texture è una delle caratteristiche più importanti per identificare difetti o imperfezioni. La texture può essere considerata come il raggruppamento delle somiglianze in un’immagine. 23-24 La sotto-struttura locale dà origine a levigatezza, uniformità, regolarità, ruvidezza, finezza, casualità, granularità 26 ecc. L’estrazione delle caratteristiche concerne la rappresentazione numerica delle caratteristiche della struttura in un’immagine digitale.27 E’ stato osservato che diversi lavori rilevano i difetti tramite l’analisi della texture.25-29 L’istogramma di un’immagine (v. Fig. 5b) fornisce informazioni statistiche sintetiche e semplici. E’ possibile ottenere diverse caratteristiche dell’immagine a partire dall’istogramma, per descrivere le proprietà statistiche del primo ordine. Nel presente studio sono state ottenute 12 immagini della pelle caratteristiche della texture così come mostrato in Tabella I, quali energia, entropia, omogeneità, correlazione, DCT30 ecc. Il calcolo di ciascuna caratteristica estratta tramite equazione matematica è riportato in Tabella I.

The derivation of each extracted feature with mathematical equation is given in Table I. Defect classification using Artificial Neural Network Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is one of the fastest most flexible classifiers used for defect detection due to their ability to describe complex decision regions.31 ANN is a network of interconnected computational units or neurons. Each neuron (see Fig. 6 a) collects information from all the neurons in the preceding layer relative

carried out to address the problem of finding optimal threshold values for segmenting images using biologically inspired algorithms.21,22 In this study, Fast Convergence Particle Swarm Optimization (FC – PSO) based multilevel image thresholding was used for automatic selection of the threshold value. PSO is a robust optimization technique based on the movement and intelligence of swarms, which applies the concept of social interaction to problem solving.

It uses a number of particles that constitute a swarm moving around in the search space looking for the best solution. Each particle in the search space adjusts its flying according to its own flying experience as well as the flying experience of other particles.

Each particle keeps track of the best fitness solution that has achieved so far by itself (pbest) as well as the best value obtained so far by any particle in the neighborhood of that particle (gbest). In this study, leather image was given as input. Each particle of the swarm was represented as image intensity (0 to 255) and algorithm finds the optimal intensity threshold value that segments the defects from the leather background as the best solution. FC-PSO segmentation algo-

rithm as depicted in the flowchart (Fig. 4) derives in accelerating each particle toward its pbest and gbest locations with weighted acceleration at each iteration. By analyzing various leather defect images, it was found from the histogram (see Fig. 5b) threshold value occurred in the intensity range of 100 to 170 (Lmin and Lmax). As shown in Fig. 5, optimal threshold value was computed and defective regions were segregated from the background. Feature Extraction Using Texture Analysis Texture is one of the most important characteristics in identifying defects or flaws. Texture can be regarded as similarity grouping in an image.23-24 Local sub-pattern gives rise to smoothness, uniformity, regularity, coarseness, fineness, randomness, granularity26etc. Feature extraction refers to numerical representation of texture characteristics in a digital image.27 Several works have been reported to detect defects using texture analysis.25-29 Histogram of an image (see Fig. 5b) provides a concise and simple statistical information. Various image features can be derived from the histogram to describe the first order statistical properties. In this study, 12 texture features as shown in Table I such as energy, entropy,

Classificazione dei difetti tramite Rete Neurale Artificiale La Rete Neurale Artificiale (ANN) è uno tra i classificatori più rapidi e flessibili utilizzati nella rilevazione dei difetti grazie alla capacità di descrivere regioni complesse.31 L’ANN è una rete di unità computazionali o neuroni interconnessi. Ogni neurone (v. Fig. 6a) raccoglie informazioni da tutti i neuroni dello strato precedente relativi al flusso d’informazione, e lo propaga in output allo strato successivo.

Il valore o i-1 è l’output del neurone precedente che viene modulato dai corrispondenti peso (wi) e bias (bi) seguiti da una funzione sigmoide o di trasferimento.32 L’input totale del jmo neurone di uno strato è dato da netj (Equazione 1), e l’output del neurone è calcolato come O j (Equazione 2): Il primo strato è chiamato strato di input ed è direttamente alimentato dall’input. Nel presente studio, le caratteristiche estratte (da F1 a F12) sono state passate direttamente in input. Ogni unità di un singolo strato è completamente connessa a tutte le altre unità dello strato successivo. L’output dell’ultimo strato è l’output della rete e gli strati tra l’input e l’output sono chiamati strati nascosti. La classificazione dei difetti della pelle è stata effettuata utilizzando 12 neuroni nello strato di input, uno strato nascosto con 4 neuroni e lo strato di output con 4 neuroni (struttura ANN 12-4-4) come mostrato in Fig. 6b. Sono state utilizzate la funzione di trasferimento Tan-Sigmoide (Equazione 3) tra l’input e lo strato nascosto e la Log-Sigmoide (Equazione 4) tra lo strato nascosto e quello di output. Durante la fase sperimentale, le caratteristiche estratte sono state ripetutamente sottoposte alla ANN, l’output della rete è stato confrontato con il codice di output desiderato (classe difettosa o buona) per ogni presentazione ed è stato calcolato l’errore (Equazione 5). L’errore è stato retro-propagato nella rete e i pesi del neurone sono stati adeguati (Equazioni 6 e 7) per minimizzare la differenza dell’errore tra l’output reale (Ypk) e quello calcolato dalla rete (Opk). Questo processo è stato ripetuto per ogni iterazione o periodo fin quando l’errore si è ridotto e la rete si è avvicinata alla classe di output desiderata.

Pertanto, al termine della fase sperimentale, i pesi dei neuroni risultano adeguati, e vengono

utilizzati per classificare le immagini sconosciute di input. Il vantaggio dell’utilizzo di una rete neurale è la possibilità di includere nuove immagini di difetti della pelle, e i campioni sperimentali porteranno ad una miglior accuratezza di previsione dell’ANN. I risultati della classificazione di immagini della pelle tramite ANN sono stati misurati in termini di accuratezza, sensibilità, specificità e precisione.33-35 Vi sono due possibili classi previste: “presente” e “assente”. Ad esempio, “presente” significa che la pelle è difettosa e “assente” che la pelle non presenta difetti. Le definizioni di TP, TN, FP e FN sono le seguenti: • Veri Positivi (TP): Immagini di pelli difettose correttamente classificate come difettose.

• Veri Negativi (TN): Immagini di pelli buone correttamente classificate come buone.

• Falsi Positivi (FP): Immagini di pelli buone erroneamente classificate come difettose.

• Falsi Negativi (FN): Immagini di pelli difettose erroneamente classificate come buone.

Tramite il sistema di imaging superficiale della pelle, sono state acquisite le immagini della superficie dell’intera pelle. Queste immagini contribuiscono alla supervisione in tempo reale delle aree difettose e non difettose della pelle. La Fig. 3 mostra il diagramma di flusso che identifica i difetti superficiali della pelle. Per velocizzare i tempi di calcolo, le immagini acquisite della pelle sono state convertite in scala di grigio. Il metodo FC-PSO (Fig. 4) è stato utilizzato per la suddivisione delle immagini. Come mostrato in Fig. 5, il metodo FC-PSO ha mostrato una buona stabilità nell’individuare il valore ottimale di soglia, per la suddivisione delle aree difettose dal fondo in diverse immagini di difetti della pelle. L’analisi della struttura delle immagini della pelle fornisce informazioni essenziali sulle proprietà strutturali superficiali corrispondenti a ruvidezza, levigatezza, contrasto e casualità della distribuzione dei pixel. Misurazioni statistiche come i momenti di ordine superiore e la correlazione rappresentano la somiglianza tra i pixel. L’insieme delle caratteristiche composto da Media, Deviazione Standard (SD), Asimmetria, Curtosi, Omogeneità, Momento della Differenza Inversa (IDM), Energia Media, Deviazione Assoluta Media (MAD), Covarianza (CV), Scarto Interquartile (IQR),

coefficiente DC della Trasformata Discreta del Coseno (D-DCT) agiscono come coefficienti indicatori per identificare i difetti. La Fig. 7 mostra il diagramma a box plot delle misurazioni delle caratteristiche estratte dalle immagini delle pelli, raggruppate per indice di classe. L’indice di classe ‘0’ rappresenta la mediana delle immagini di pelli buone e l’indice di classe ‘1’ rappresenta la mediana della caratteristica delle immagini di pelli difettose. La Fig. 7 mostra una differenza significativa tra la mediana dei due gruppi per tutte le caratteristiche estratte. La massima capacità discriminatoria tra un’immagine buona e una difettosa è stata osservata tramite la caratteristica dell’Entropia (F4).

La superficie della pelle buona possiede una struttura molto liscia, ed è decisamente omogenea. Si può vedere dalla Fig. 7 che per l’indice di classe 0 (buona) ciò è stato piuttosto evidente con SD, Varianza, MAD, CV e IQR molto bassi. Analogamente, la casualità dell’immagine della pelle buona è stata molto minore per bassi valori di entropia e alta omogeneità. Difetti quali l’infezione batterica, l’attacco fungino, il danno al fiore, i buchi, le macchie di calce ecc., hanno mostrato patch porosi su una struttura ruvida e grossolana. Pertanto, elevati valori di SD, MAD e CV, e casualità con un valore elevato di Entropia (v. Fig. 7 – indice di classe 1). Difetti quali macchie di cromo, macchie di tintura ecc., sembrano essere visivamente a trama liscia con patches di intensità variabile.

I valori delle caratteristiche hanno evidenziato questi difetti con valori più elevati di intensità media, distribuzione di Probabilità (curtosi), Asimmetria e Omogeneità.

Nel presente studio, la capacità discriminatoria di questo insieme di caratteristiche estratte è stata utilizzata per la classificazione di dieci difetti distinti quali l’infezione batterica, le macchine di cromo, le macchie di tintura, l’attacco fungino, il danno al fiore, il fiore assente, i segni della crescita, le macchie di calce, i buchi e i graffi. Le immagini di macchie di cromo e di tintura sono visivamente piuttosto simili. I valori del coefficiente DC della DCT (F12) e dell’intensità media (F1) sono stati trovati più elevati per la macchina di tintura in confronto alla macchia di cromo.

Results and Discussion Using the leather surface imaging setup, the whole leather surface images were captured.

These images aid real time monitoring of the defective and non-defective leather regions.

Fig. 3 shows the work flow diagram for iden-

tification of the leather surface defects.

To speed up the computation time, the captured leather images were converted to gray scale. FC-PSO method (Fig.4) was used for image segmentation. As shown in Fig. 5, FC-PSO method exhibited good search stability to find the optimum thresh-

old value to segment defective region from the background for different leather defect images.Texture analysis of the leather images provides vital information about surface textural properties reflecting the coarseness, smoothness, contrast, and randomness of pixel distribution. Statistical measurements such as higher order moments and correlation represent similarity of pixels. put are called hidden layers. Leather defect classification was performed using 12 neurons in input layer, one hidden layer with 4 neurons and output layer with 4 neurons (12-4-4 ANN structure) as shown in Fig. 6b.

Tan-Sigmoid transfer function (Equation 3) between input and hidden layer and log-sigmoid (Equation 4) was used between hidden and output layer.

During training phase, extracted features were presented repeatedly to ANN, the output of the network was compared with the desired output code (defective class or good) for each presentation and the error was calculated (Equation 5). The error was back propagated to the network and the weights of the neuron was adjusted (Equation 6 and 7) to minimize the error difference between the actual (Ypk) and network computed output (Opk). This process was repeated for each iteration or epoch till the error gets decreased and network gets closer to the desired output class. Thus, at the end of the training, weights of the neurons get fixed, and are used to classify the unknown input images. Advantage of using neural network is that it is possible to include new leather defect images and the combined training samples will result in improving ANN’s prediction accuracy. The performance of the classification in leather images using ANN was measured in terms of Accuracy, Sensitivity, Specificity, and Precision.33-35 There are two possible predicted classes: “present” and “absent”. For example, “present” would mean the leather to be defective and “absent” would mean the leather does not have the defect. The definitions of TP, TN, FP, and FN are as follows: • True positives (TP): Defective leather frames correctly classified as defects.

• True negatives (TN): Good leather frames correctly classified as good.

• False positives (FP): Good leather frame wrongly classified as defective.

• False negatives (FN): Defective leather frame wrongly classified as good.

Momentum (IDM), Mean Energy, Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), Co-variance (CV), Inter Quartile Range(IQR), DC coefficient of Discrete Cosine Transform (D-DCT) act as predictor coefficients to identify the defects.

Fig. 7 shows the box plot of the feature measurements extracted from the leather images, grouped by class label. Class label ‘0’ represents that median value of good leather images and class label ‘1’ represents the median feature value of defect leather images. Fig.7 shows significant difference between the median of two groups for all the extracted features. The highest discriminative ability between good and defective image was seen with Entropy feature (F4). Good leather surface has a very smooth texture, and is highly homogeneous. It can be seen from Fig. 7, for the class label 0 (good) this was quite evident with very low SD, Variance, MAD, CV and IQR. Similarly, good leather image randomness was very less with lower entropy values and high homogeneity. Defects such as bacterial infection, fungal attack, grain damage, pox mark, lime blast etc., showed porous patches with rough and coarse texture. Hence, high SD, MAD and CV values, and randomness with high Entropy value (see Fig. 7 – class label 1). Defects such as chrome patch, dye patch etc., visually seem to be of smooth texture with variable intensity patches. Feature values reflected these defects with higher mean intensity, Probability distribution (kurtosis), Skewness values and Homogeneity. In this study, the discriminative ability of these extracted feature set were used for classifying ten different defects such as bacterial infection, chrome patch, dye patch, fungal attack, grain damage, grain off, growth mark, lime blast, pox mark and scratch mark. Chrome patch and dye patch images were quite similar visually. DC coefficient of DCT (F12) and mean intensity (F1) values were found to be higher for dye patch when compared to chrome patch. Pox mark defect was quantified with unique Kurtosis (F6) feature. Fungal defect was identified with Entropy (F4) and MAD feature (F9). Similarly, lime blast defect was quantified using Covariance (F10) and MAD(F9) whereas scratch defect was quantified with F2 and F4. Bacterial infection had high SD (F3), MAD(F9) and Covariance(F10)

La DCT-II bidimensionale di un’immagine o di una matrice è semplicemente la DCT-II monodimensionale, dall’alto, effettuata lungo le righe e poi lungo le colonne. Il coefficiente DC dato nel valore in alto a sinistra della trasformata rappresenta l’energia complessiva.

la caratteristica della Curtosi unica (F6). Il difetto da attacco fungino è stato identificato tramite le caratteristiche di Entropia (F4) e MAD (F9). Analogamente, il difetto delle macchie di calce è stato quantificato tramite Covarianza (F10) e MAD (F9), mentre il difetto del graffio è stato quantificato tramite F2 e F4. L’infezione batterica possedeva elevati SD (F3), MAD (F9) e Covarianza (F10), mentre il segno della crescita è stato quantificato tramite Energia (F7), IQR (F11) e MAD (F10). Vi sono state sovrapposizioni nei valori delle caratteristiche per dieci difetti, ma ogni difetto aveva la sua propria combinazione distinta di valori di caratteristiche in confronto alle immagini della pelle buona. La pelle buona è stata quantificata tramite varianza (F2), omogeneità (F8). La caratteristica di entropia complessiva (F4) ha mostrato ottime capacità discriminatorie di distinguere la pelle buona da tutti i dieci difetti. Dodici valori di caratteristiche estratte dalla struttura sono stati usati quali input alla Rete Neurale Artificiale (ANN) per classificare le immagini della superficie della pelle nella classe buona o difettosa. Sono state utilizzate una funzione tangente tra strato di input e strato nascosto e una funzione sigmoide tra strato nascosto e strato di output. La rete è stata inizialmente sperimentata con coppie note di input-output per 10000 periodi. La rete ha mostrato convergenza dopo 8552 iterazioni (periodi) con soglia di errore di 0,118 e ha pertanto esibito una buona accuratezza sui dati di test. Dopo la sperimentazione, la rete è stata utilizzata per identificare le aree difettose e non difettose dalle immagini dell’intera pelle. La Tabella II mostra i risultati del classificatore ad ANN con i valori delle caratteristiche inseriti in ingresso. L’accuratezza della classificazione indica quanto spesso il classificatore abbia correttamente discriminato fotogrammi di pelle buona e difettosa, e l’errore mostra quanto spesso il classificatore si sia sbagliato. La sensibilità rivela la capacità del classificatore di prevedere immagini di difetti come difetti, mentre la specificità predice immagini buone come buone. La precisione mostra l’efficacia del classificatore nella corretta previsione di un difetto nel caso di un fotogramma realmente difettoso. I difetti come buchetti, macchie di

were given as input to the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify the leather surface images as good or defective class. A tangent function between input and hidden layer and a sigmoid function between hidden and output layer were used. Initially with known input-output pair, the network was trained for 10000 epochs. The network converged after 8552 iterations (epochs) with error threshold of 0.118 thus resulted in the good accuracy for the test data. After training, network was used to identify the defective wwand non-defective regions of the unknown whole leather images.

Table II shows the results of ANN classifier with feature values given as input.

Classification accuracy indicates how often classifier was correct in discriminating good and defective frames and error shows how often classifier was wrong. Sensitivity reveals

visually and objectively using the extracted features. Specificity was also found to be high for these defects, which indicates their amenability for discrimination from good leather.

feature values hence slight decrease can be seen in classification accuracy for classifying them. The overall classification accuracy of the network to classify all the defects was 88.61%, which shows its potential to be used for automatic classification of leather defects.

Automatic leather defect software was developed using the above image processing technique (Fig. 8). It accepts images (frame by frame) through a CCD camera and segments the defective regions using FC-PSO. Texture features were then computed for each image frame and fed to ANN. Trained ANN recognizes each frame and classifies as good or respective defective (non usable) frame.

CONCLUSIONS This paper shows the application of machine vision and image processing technique to identify and classify defects in leather surface images. The present approach using texture analysis for identification of leather defects and neural networks appears promising for automatic inspection and thus shows the technical feasibility of an automatic intelligent real time leather defect detection inspection system. The system inspects all the areas of the leather avoiding the problems of human fatigue, missing of defects, etc. Such an automated leather defect inspection system can deliver accurate results in identifying the surface defects providing consistent and quality inspection thereby increasing the productivity and reliability of assessment.

La presenza di questi difetti è stata facilmente quantificata sia visivamente sia oggettivamente tramite le caratteristiche estratte.

Anche la specificità è stata trovata elevata in questi difetti, a indicare la loro idoneità alla discriminazione dalla pelle buona. Le macchie di cromo e di tintura appaiono visivamente simili, e oggettivamente vi sono state sovrapposizioni di valori di caratteristiche, pertanto si può notare un calo nell’accuratezza della loro classificazione. L’accuratezza complessiva di classificazione della rete per classificare tutti i difetti è stata dell’88,61%, e ciò ne mostra il potenziale d’utilizzo per la classificazione automatizzata dei difetti della pelle. Il software per i difetti della pelle è stato sviluppato basandosi sulla suddetta tecnica di elaborazione immagini (Fig. 8).

Esso acquisisce immagini (fotogramma per fotogramma) tramite una camera CCD e suddivide le aree difettose tramite la FC-PSO. Le caratteristiche della struttura sono state poi calcolate per ogni fotogramma e trasmesse all’ANN. L’ANN messa a punto riconosce ogni fotogramma e lo classifica come fotogramma buono o difettoso (inutilizzabile).

CONCLUSIONI Questo articolo mostra l’applicazione dell’ispezione automatizzata e delle tecniche di elaborazione di immagini per identificare e classificare i difetti come immagini della superficie della pelle. Il presente approccio che utilizza l’analisi della texture e le reti neurali per identificare i difetti della pelle, sembra promettente nell’ispezione automatizzata, dimostrando pertanto la fattibilità tecnica di un tale sistema, in tempo reale, per l’identificazione dei difetti della pelle. Il sistema ispeziona tutte le aree della pelle evitando i problemi dell’affaticamento umano, della mancata rilevazione dei difetti ecc. Questo sistema automatizzato di ispezione può fornire risultati accurati nell’identificazione dei difetti superficiali, consentendo un’analisi coerente
