Khaite into fashion’s new digital frontier

THIS SEASON ON THE BRAND’S MOODBOARD, THE MOVIES "ALIEN", "THE ABYSS", "AFTER HOURS": “I LOVE THE IDEA OF AN ’80S FUTURE – ARCHAIC, DARK AND AMBITIOUS", DESIGNER CATHERINE HOLSTEIN MUSES When Covid-19 blighted Khaite’s fourth runway show, Holstein took the opportunity to stage her own fashion technology showcase inside the homes of buyers and members of the press. In a box decorated with swatches of excess fabric from the collection, there was a hardcover lookbook and a set of postcards that both integrated AR technology. With a smartphone scan, the spring/summer 2021 shoes and boots were viewable in Augmented Reality and zoomable in 3D for a more "tactile" view that allowed to expand the conversation on the future of digital retail. She’s planning to make AR a permanent feature on her website, and will eventually have 3D renderings for every item, from shoes to sweaters.

Also unlocked by smartphone a futuristic short film by Hanna Tveite, set in concrete, industrial darkness, exploring the paradoxes of the present – doom versus hope, trauma versus rebirth – and, Holstein’s poignant question, “How do we really live a life in a box?”.

To avoid getting too tech-y and cold, Holstein tucked in the ss21 box also a Régime des Fleurs candle and a vinyl record to make the whole living room show experience more sensorial, a mix or analog and digital.

Khaite verso la nuova frontiera digitale della moda SULLA MOODBOARD DI QUESTA STAGIONE PER IL BRAND, I FILM "ALIEN", "THE ABYSS", "AFTER HOURS”: "ADORO L'IDEA DI UN FUTURO ANNI '80 - ARCAICO, OSCURO E AMBIZIOSO", DICHIARA LA DESIGNER CATHERINE HOLSTEIN Quando il Covid-19 reso inevitabile annullare la sfilata di Khaite, Catherine Holstein ha colto l'occasione per mettere in scena il suo personale showcase sulle tecnologie per la moda direttamente a casa di selezionati buyer e addetti stampa. Recapitati in una scatola decorata con campioni di tessuto avanzati dalla collezione, c'erano un lookbook con copertina rigida e un set di cartoline che integravano entrambi la tecnologia AR. Con una scansione da smartphone, le scarpe e gli stivali primavera/estate 2021 erano visualizzabili in Realtà Aumentata e zoomabili in 3D per una visione più "tattile" possibile, che ha permesso di portare avanti un’idea sul futuro del retail digitale. Nei suoi piani c’è rendere l'AR una funzionalità permanente sul suo sito web e proporre rendering 3D per ogni articolo, dalle scarpe ai maglioni.

Sbloccato inoltre tramite smartphone un cortometraggio futuristico di Hanna Tveite, ambientato in un’oscurità industriale di cemento, che ha esplorato i paradossi del presente - destino versus speranza, trauma versus rinascita - e, la domanda accorata di Holstein, "Viviamo davvero la vita in un scatola?".

Per evitare di rendere il tutto troppo tecnico e freddo, Holstein ha inserito nel pacco di presentazione della ss21 anche una candela Régime des Fleurs e un disco in vinile per rendere l'esperienza nel soggiorno di casa propria più sensoriale, un mix di analogico e digitale.

A made in Italy brand whose project starts from the rubber of the soles that characterises the entire shoe. Each shoe, treated with a layer of hand-spread rubber, is drowned in a special liquid rubber that incorporates the upper while cooling down, forming a transparent shell. There is no lack of attention to the environment: the waste of the rubber used for the sole is used to create original design proposals: paintings, lamps ...

Un marchio made in Italy il cui progetto parte proprio dalla gomma delle suole che caratterizza l’intera calzatura. Ogni scarpa, trattata con uno strato di gomma spalmato a mano, viene affogata in una speciale gomma liquida che, raffreddandosi, incorpora la tomaia, formando un guscio trasparente.

Non manca l’attenzione per l’ambiente: gli scarti della gomma utilizzata per la suola servono per realizzare inedite proposte di design: quadri, lampade...

Never, ever give up!

THIS IS THE MOTTO THAT HAS ALWAYS GUIDED MRS LETIZIA GALLI, THE BACKBONE OF THE BRUNATE SHOE FACTORY. Why are we talking about Aunt Letizia, that’s what her grandchildren call her while they still see her walking through the corridors of the Brunate Shoe Factory? Because she turned 100 and has been dedicating her life to footwear and the family business since 1939. In a difficult time like the present, paying homage with great joy to a person who has gone through so many springs, knowing joys and hardships, is going to help us. Never before has it comforted us to think about the resilience important Italians companies have and are demonstrating thanks to the care, passion and sacrifices of people who have guided them and who have shared effort and satisfaction with their own family and collaborators. Never before have the words of Mrs. Letizia helped us to watch forward, with hope, trust and… that pinch of wisdom that certainly doesn’t hurt.

You were only 19 when you took over the Brunate shoe factory. What had happened and how did you feel?

“In the year 1939, my father had just died and another tragic war was looming on the horizon. Honestly, I didn't have much time to wonder how I felt. Our father died after a very short illness. I was the oldest of six siblings, and the youngest was only three years old. I had just finished school. I remember very well that the day he died, dad asked me to take care of the factory and I promised him that I would. I knew it was going to be a big responsibility. Already then the factory had more than 100 employees. But I owed it to my father and the sacrifices he had made to start the company. Then, within a few years, the Second World War started. When I think back to those times, I realise that what we live today is nothing in comparison. Many of our employees had to go to the front. The nearby city of Milan was bombed several times. Those were very complicated years, during which our business had to considerably slow down. One of my siblings, Elia, was even sent to a training camp in Germany and then, once back in Italy, he spent a few months in a concentration camp in Tuscany.”

How did you earn the respect of a male-dominated society, like that of those times?

“I guess I earned it because I probably behaved like a man! Seriously, I also got some help. My uncle Giovanni, with whom my father Vittorio had founded the company, helped out, although he too died a few years after the war. The many trusted men in our organisation supported me. And my siblings, who grew up fast. We also had highly competent sales representatives and retailer customers who appreciated our products and the cooperation with our family.

Every know and then I also had some tough fights, of course. I remember one incident in particular. One night, in March 1949, the factory almost completely burned down. A real disaster! I turned to the company’s bank for financial help. To my surprise, the loan was turned down. After a few days, I discovered that one of the bank’s executives was also a partner in a competing shoe factory. I did not get discouraged and the same day I ended the relationship with that bank, I turned to another banking institution that granted me the loan. Our fantastic collaborators gave up part of their salary for several months to support the reconstruction. Of course, I repayed everything with interests. I also managed to obtain exceptional payment terms from our suppliers. I kept all the letters of solidarity we received at that time.”

What drove you to work for 80 years?

“On the one hand, the promise I made to my father. On the other hand, seeing my grandchildren engage in the company founded by their grandfather. That’s why I still pass by the company every day.”

Someone says that you have never been on vacation? Is that true?

“I believe I only started taking real holidays in the 70s, when two of my siblings finally entered the company. Since then I have spent a few weeks in South Tyrol during summertime. I’ve always had a passion for the mountains. Until that time I only allowed myself a few weekends a year in nearby Switzerland or in Italian art cities.

Florence, Venice, Rome have always been among my favourite destinations.”

What was it like having to lead a company, make important decisions, study new strategies? ”Hard, especially in the first 20 years when I managed the company almost on my own. Later I was lucky enough to have my siblings by my side and the most difficult decisions to make were shared. Perhaps our biggest regret was to stop making children’s shoes in the early 1980s. I believe that, today, there would still be space on the market for a quality product like ours.”

What qualities do you think are most important to do well in one’s profession?

“Talent and hard work are two qualities that should not be missing, even though I believe that upstream of both there should be passion for what you do and the ability to pass it on to those who work with you. In recent years I have always been pleased to see that there are people in the company who started working with us at a young age and then spent their entire career in Brunate. Forty, sometimes forty-five years.

Examples of fathers or mothers bringing their children, and even grandchildren to work with us. It means that our example and dedication have helped create a stimulating and gratifying environment.”

Do you remember any anecdotes related to your highly appreciated shoes?

“I don’t know if I can say it, but we had the great pleasure of seeing Chancellor Merkel wearing a pair of Brunate blue suede moccasins during her first meeting with President Trump at the White House a few years ago. Just as we were happy to receive a private visit from Queen Paola of Belgium on a Saturday morning two years ago. On that occasion, my granddaughters helped her select décolletés and moccasins. We know that other queens, princesses and celebrities also love and wear our shoes: a good reason for being proud”.

In the fashion world, which personalities have caught your attention?

“I would like to mention Giorgio Armani for his style and elegance and that of his collections. I also think of Gabrielle Chanel for her personal story and iconic creations.

Mai, mai, mai arrendersi!

QUESTO IL MOTTO CHE GUIDA DA SEMPRE LA SIGNORA LETIZIA GALLI, COLONNA PORTANTE DEL CALZATURIFICIO BRUNATE. Perché parliamo di Zia Letizia, così la chiamano i suoi nipoti mentre la vedono ancora camminare fra i corridoi del Calzaturificio Brunate?

Perché ha compiuto 100 anni e dal 1939 dedica la sua vita alle calzature e all’azienda di famiglia.

Mai come in questo momento difficile ci è d’aiuto rendere omaggio, con grandissima gioia, a una persona che ha attraversato così tante primavere, conoscendo gioie e traversie.

Mai come in questo momento ci è di conforto pensare alla resilienza che importanti aziende italiane hanno e stanno dimostrando proprio grazie alla cura, alla passione e ai sacrifici delle persone che le hanno guidate e che hanno condiviso fatica e soddisfazioni con la propria famiglia di collaboratori.

Mai come in questo momento le parole della signora Letizia possono aiutarci a guardare avanti, con speranza, fiducia e… quel pizzico di saggezza che certo non guasta.

Nel 1939, dopo la morte di suo padre, all’orizzonte un’altra tragica guerra, lei ha preso in mano le redini del Calzaturificio Brunate. Aveva solo 19 anni. Non riesco neppure a immaginare come ci si possa sentire in una situazione simile?

“A essere onesti, non ho avuto molto tempo per pensare a quello che stava succedendo nella mia vita. Nostro padre morì dopo una malattia molto breve. Ero la più grande di sei fratelli, e il più giovane aveva solo tre anni. Avevo appena finito la scuola. Ricordo molto bene che il giorno in cui morì, papà mi chiese di occuparmi della fabbrica e io gli promisi che lo avrei fatto. Sapevo che sarebbe stata una grande responsabilità. Già allora la fabbrica contava più di 100 dipendenti. Ma lo dovevo a mio padre e ai sacrifici che aveva fatto per avviare l'azienda. Poi, nel giro di pochi anni, sarebbe arrivata anche la seconda guerra mondiale. Quando ripenso a quei tempi, mi rendo conto che ciò che viviamo oggi non è nulla in confronto. Molti dei nostri dipendenti dovettero andare al fronte.

La vicina città di Milano fu bombardata più volte. Furono anni molto complicati, durante i quali la nostra attività dovette rallentare notevolmente. Uno dei miei fratelli, Elia, fu addirittura mandato in un campo di addestramento in Germania e poi, una volta tornato in Italia, trascorse alcuni mesi in un campo di concentramento in Toscana.”

Si è improvvisamente trovata ad essere un imprenditore molto giovane, per giunta donna (non comune per quei tempi). A chi poté chiedere consiglio e come fece a farsi rispettare in una società ancora molto maschilista?

“Per quanto riguarda il rispetto: immagino di essermelo guadagnato perché, probabilmente, mi sono comportata come un uomo!

Scherzi a parte, mi diede una mano mio zio Giovanni, con cui mio padre Vittorio aveva fondato la società, anche se pure lui morì qualche anno dopo la guerra. Mi sostennero i tanti uomini di fiducia all'interno della nostra organizzazione. E i miei fratelli, cresciuti in fretta. Avevamo anche rappresentanti di vendita e clienti rivenditori molto competenti che hanno apprezzato i nostri prodotti e la collaborazione con la nostra famiglia.

Naturalmente, di tanto in tanto, ho avuto anche dei duri scontri. Ricordo un incidente in particolare. Una notte del marzo 1949 la fabbrica bruciò quasi completamente. Una vera catastrofe! Mi rivolsi alla banca dell'azienda per un aiuto finanziario. Con mia grande sorpresa, il finanziamento fu rifiutato. Dopo qualche giorno scoprii che uno dei dirigenti della banca era anche socio di un calzaturificio concorrente. Non mi persi d'animo e, il giorno stesso in cui chiusi tutti i rapporti con quella banca, mi rivolsi a un altro istituto che mi accordò il prestito.

I nostri fantastici collaboratori rinunciarono per diversi mesi a parte del loro stipendio per sostenere la ricostruzione. Naturalmente li ripagai con gli interessi. Riuscii anche a ottenere dai nostri fornitori delle dilazioni di pagamento eccezionali. Conservo ancora tutte le lettere di solidarietà che ricevemmo in quel periodo.”

Cosa l’ha motivata e le ha dato la forza di lavorare per 80 anni?

“Da un lato, la promessa che feci a mio padre. Dall’altro, vedere i miei nipoti impegnarsi nell'azienda fondata dal loro nonno. Ecco perché vado ancora in azienda, ogni giorno.”

Si dice che lei non si sia mai concessa una vacanza? Cosa faceva per recuperare le energie e rilassarsi?

“Se non ricordo male, ho iniziato a fare delle vere e proprie vacanze solo dagli anni '70, quando due dei miei fratelli sono entrati definitivamente in azienda.

Da allora ho trascorso alcune settimane d’estate in Alto Adige. La montagna è sempre stata una mia passione. Fino a quel momento mi concedevo solo pochi fine settimana all'anno nella vicina Svizzera o nelle città d'arte italiane. Firenze, Venezia, Roma sono sempre state tra le mie mete preferite.”

Ha mai dubitato di se stessa o di una delle decisioni che ha preso?

“Certo, soprattutto nei primi 20 anni in cui ho gestito l'azienda praticamente da sola. Più tardi ho avuto la fortuna di avere i miei fratelli al fianco e le decisioni più difficili sono state condivise. Forse il nostro più grande rimpianto è stato smettere di produrre scarpe per bambini all'inizio degli anni Ottanta. Sono convinta che, oggi, ci sarebbe ancora spazio sul mercato per un prodotto di qualità come il nostro.”

Quanto è importante il talento e quanto è importante il duro lavoro?

“Sono due qualità che non dovrebbero mancare, anche se a monte di entrambe credo ci debba essere passione per quello che si fa e capacità di trasmetterla a chi lavora con noi. In questi anni mi ha sempre fatto piacere constatare come in azienda ci siano persone che hanno iniziato ha lavorare con noi da giovani per poi trascorrere in Brunate l’intera carriera. Quaranta, a volte quarantacinque anni. Esempi di padri o madri che portano i loro figli, e addirittura i nipoti, a lavorare con noi. Significa che il nostro esempio e la nostra dedizione hanno aiutato a creare un ambiente stimolante e gratificante.”

Le scarpe Brunate sono conosciute per la loro lavorazione, i materiali chic e il comfort. C'è una scarpa per lei speciale, che racconta una storia particolare?

“Non so se posso dirlo, ma abbiamo avuto il grande piacere di vedere la Cancelliera Merkel indossare un paio di mocassini Brunate in camoscio blu durante il suo primo incontro con il Presidente Trump alla Casa Bianca, qualche anno fa.

As far as the world of footwear is concerned, I believe that Salvatore Ferragamo was among the first to develop fashionable products with perfect technical content taking them to international markets. ” Generational transitions always represent a crucial moment for companies.

What is your secret?

“The constant confrontation of ideas. The division of tasks. The belief that staying united means remaning strong. I am sure that without the strength of the family we would not have overcome all the crises and all the challenges in these almost one hundred years of activity.”

Today your grandchildren run the company? Do you see yourself in them or do you notice many differences in the way they manage business?

“The new generation today leaves less room for improvisation. We are talking about young people who have studied and speak several languages. And maybe they even had experiences abroad. They move easily in this globalised world. The generation of my siblings and mine was made up of young people with strong intuition and willpower. After the war, Italy had to be completely rebuilt. You needed everything. It may seem paradoxical to you, but even though times were harder, the way of doing business was easier.”

You certainly have gone through many hard and difficult times. What would you say to those who face the pandemic today?

“Creativity and good taste are qualities that go beyond the crisis. Over the centuries, art and fashion have always had a positive influence on our lives. Even during wars, even during pandemics. We must not lose hope. The world will certainly not stop because of a virus.”

What do you believe is the most important legacy you would love was preserved over time for your grandchildren and your company?

“Ever since our grandchildren and our children were younger, we have always tried to teach them the culture of work. In a way, they had to learn how to become the keepers of tradition. And in the future they will need to be able to pass it on to their children. This is Brunate’s secret, so to speak: knowing how to transform good ideas into shoes with an exceptional shape, line, fit, using the skills of our collaborators. I like to think that the family and the company almost blend in.”

When you blew out the 100 candles, did you think ‘I have made my dreams come true’ or is there still room for some desire?

“As I said, I didn’t have much time to imagine a life other than the one I had. In any case, I don’t regret it. I lived my life with great joy. It was a fantastic ‘journey’, where wonderful moments alternated with more difficult ones. If I still have a dream? Perhaps that would be asking a little too much, but in just over five years the factory will celebrate its first hundred years...”

Così come siamo stati felici di ricevere in fabbrica, un sabato mattina di due anni fa, la visita privata della Regina Paola del Belgio. In quella occasione le mie nipoti l’hanno aiutata a selezionare delle décolleté e dei mocassini. Sappiamo che anche altre regine, principesse e celebrità amano e indossano le nostre scarpe: un bel motivo di orgoglio.

Ci sono designer o calzaturieri che l’hanno particolarmente impressionata?

“Vorrei citare Giorgio Armani per lo stile e l'eleganza dell'uomo e delle sue collezioni. Penso anche a Gabrielle Chanel per la sua storia personale e le creazioni iconiche. Per quanto riguarda il mondo della calzatura, credo che Salvatore Ferragamo sia stato tra i primi a sviluppare e portare sui mercati internazionali prodotti alla moda con un perfetto contenuto tecnico.”

Brunate è un'azienda a conduzione familiare. C'è un segreto su come riescano i membri della famiglia a lavorare insieme in modo armonioso e con successo?

“Il confronto costante delle idee. La suddivisione dei compiti. La convinzione che rimanere uniti significa rimanere forti. Sono sicura che senza la forza della famiglia non avremmo superato tutte le crisi e tutte le sfide in questi quasi cento anni di attività.”

Qual è la differenza tra lo stile di gestione moderno e quello dei suoi primi anni?

“Oggi le nuove generazioni lasciano meno spazio all'improvvisazione. Stiamo parlando di giovani che hanno studiato e parlano diverse lingue. E magari hanno anche fatto esperienze all'estero. Si muovono con facilità in questo mondo globalizzato. La generazione dei miei fratelli e la mia era composta da giovani con molto intuito e forza di volontà. Dopo la guerra, l'Italia era un Paese da ricostruire completamente. C'era bisogno di tutto. Le sembrerà paradossale ma, anche se i tempi erano più difficili, il modo di fare impresa era più semplice.”

Lei sa cosa significa mostrare resilienza in tempo di crisi. Nell'attuale situazione condizionata dalla pandemia, come incoraggerebbe la nuova generazione di stilisti a non lasciarsi andare?

“Creatività e buon gusto sono qualità che vanno oltre le crisi. Nel corso dei secoli, arte e moda hanno sempre avuto un'influenza positiva sulle nostre vite.

Anche durante le guerre, anche durante le pandemie. Non dobbiamo perdere la speranza. Il mondo non si fermerà certo a causa di un virus.”

Cosa augura ai nipoti e alla sua azienda?

“Da quando i nostri nipoti e i nostri figli erano più piccoli, abbiamo sempre cercato di insegnare loro la cultura del lavoro. In un certo senso, hanno dovuto imparare a diventare i custodi della tradizione. E in futuro dovranno essere in grado di trasmetterlo ai loro figli. Questo è il segreto di Brunate, per così dire: saper trasformare buone idee in scarpe con una forma, una linea, una calzata eccezionali, utilizzando la maestria dei nostri collaboratori. Mi piace pensare che la famiglia e l'azienda quasi si confondano.”

Sente di aver realizzato il sogno della sua vita? Ne ha altri?

“Come ho detto, non ho avuto molto tempo per immaginare una vita diversa da quella che ho avuto. In ogni caso, non me ne rammarico. Quello che ho fatto, l'ho fatto con grande gioia. È stato un ‘viaggio’ fantastico, in cui momenti meravigliosi si sono alternati a momenti più difficili. Se ho ancora un sogno? Forse sarebbe chiedere un po' troppo, ma tra poco più di cinque anni la fabbrica festeggerà i suoi primi cento anni...”

MICAM: stronger together UNDER THE FLAG #STRONGERTOGETHER, MICAM AND OTHER MILAN FASHION FAIRS ATTRACTED OVER 16 THOUSAND BUYERS TO MILAN, GIVING A CLEAR SIGNAL OF THE DESIRE TO RESTART IN A KEY SECTOR OF MADE IN ITALY It was anything but a sure thing: the 16,000 buyers who decided to visit MICAM and the other fashion fairs held in Milano Rho from 20 to 25 September under the flag #strongertogether, wanted to believe in the relaunching of the fashion industry, one of the most strategic segments of Made in Italy. With their presence they rewarded the courage of all the exhibiting companies that chose to participate in MICAM, the international footwear trade fair; MIPEL, the international event dedicated to leather goods and accessories; TheOneMilano Special featured by MICAM, the women's haut-à-porter show; A New Point Of View, the special format by Lineapelle, with its leathers and materials for the fashion industry; and HOMI Fashion&Jewels Exhibition. In other words, there is strength in numbers: during a moment that is still dominated by pandemic winds, the resulting numbers send a positive and clear signal of the market’s intention to react with conviction and determination. It was also no coincidence that there was an important presence of foreign buyers, around 4000, making up 25% of the total, and coming mainly from nearby Switzerland, Germany, and France: an encouraging result. Orders were also not lacking at the fair, even if the downtrend – which is understandable – was related to the difficulties of the moment. However, from here on out, it is possible to look forward.

“This edition of MICAM was held in a historical, unprecedented moment – commented MICAM Chair, Siro Badon. We received thanks from operators for our courage and tenacity in proposing it. It undoubtedly represented a moment for the relaunching of business and has been the driving force for other events with which synergies have been built. The pandemic, which is constantly changing

form, has created problems for our production sector, difficulties that we have experienced first-hand at MICAM. But we are hopeful for the future, first in line to create opportunities for companies in the supply chain and to support them on a daily basis. Because one can only get out of such a situation by working as a team, all rowing in the same direction. The entire fashion manufacturing industry is paying for the effects of this crisis, with a significant decline in turnover, especially in exports. It is clear that to overcome this phase, external help is also needed, I am referring, in particular, to the institutions that must concretely support these events. Companies must be supported through economic incentives and tax relief. Trade fairs such as MICAM are not only an irreplaceable moment in which to do business but are also a vehicle to give international visibility to the excellence of ‘Made in Italy’ that is represented by companies in our sector”.

The MICAM selection was extremely high-end, as usual, with SS2021 collections rich in creative highlights and innovation. Great emphasis was given over to the Emerging Designer area dedicated to creative talents in footwear and to MICAM X, the space dedicated to materials, sustainability, retail, and heritage & innovation, which also hosted animated talks and workshops.

With the physical fairs now over, the events will continue to keep the market open digitally through applications, smart catalogues, and business portals: MICAM Digital Show will overcome restrictions on international travel by bringing exhibitors and buyers into contact with one another on the platform that has been developed in partnership with NuORDER, which already has a community of 500 thousand buyers to its name.

Con la loro presenza hanno premiato il coraggio di tutte le aziende espositrici che hanno scelto di prendere parte a MICAM al salone internazionale della calzatura e a MIPEL, salone della pelletteria e accessorio in pelle, TheOneMilano special featured by MICAM, salone dell'haute-à-porter femminile, A New Point of View by Lineapelle, salone della pelle e materiali per la moda, e HOMI Fashion & Jewels exhibition. Insomma, l'unione fa la forza: in un momento ancora dominato dai venti della pandemia, il risultato nei numeri lancia un segnale positivo e chiaro della determinazione del mercato di reagire con convinzione e determinazione. Non a caso, infatti, si è registrata anche una consistente presenza di buyer esteri, circa 4000, il 25% del totale, provenienti soprattutto dalle vicine Svizzera, Germania e Francia: un dato incoraggiante. Gli ordini in fiera non sono mancati, anche se il livello delle contrattazioni – come è comprensibile - è stato commisurato alle difficoltà del momento. Ma da qui si può iniziare a guardare in avanti.

“Questa edizione del MICAM si è tenuta in una congiuntura storica, che non ha precedenti - ha commentato Siro Badon, presidente di MICAM. Abbiamo ricevuto il ringraziamento degli operatori per il coraggio e la tenacia nel proporla. Ha rappresentato indubbiamente un momento di rilancio del business ed ha fatto da traino ad altre manifestazioni con cui si è costruita una sinergia. La pandemia, il cui quadro è in continua evoluzione, ha creato problemi al nostro comparto produttivo, difficoltà che al MICAM abbiamo toccato con mano. Ma siamo speranzosi per il futuro, in prima fila per creare opportunità alle aziende della filiera, supportandole quotidianamente. Perché da una situazione del genere, se ne esce solo facendo squadra, remando tutti nella stessa direzione. Tutta l’industria manifatturiera della moda sta pagando gli effetti di questa crisi con

flessione di fatturati importanti, in particolare modo nell’export. E’ evidente che per superare questa fase, servono anche aiuti esterni, mi riferisco in particolare alle istituzioni che devono supportare queste manifestazioni concretamente. Le aziende devono essere sostenute attraverso incentivi economici e sgravi fiscali. Le fiere come il MICAM, non solo sono un momento insostituibile per concretizzare il business ma un veicolo per dare visibilità internazionale all’eccellenza del made in Italy rappresentato dalle imprese del nostro comparto”.

La selezione di MICAM è stata come sempre di altissimo livello con le collezioni PE2021 ricche di spunti creativi e innovazione. Grande risalto è stato dato all'area dedicata ai talenti creativi della calzatura Emerging Designer e a MICAM X, lo spazio dedicato a materiali, sostenibilità, retail, heritage & innovazione che ha ospitato anche animati talk e workshop.

Maison Déplacé is an independent footwear and accessories brand that was born from a unique convergence of personalities and passion of designers Marco Contigiani, Aldo and Leonardo D’Autilio’s for tattoos, architecture, and electronic music.

The three young entrepreneurs express their very personal way of looking at urban and outdoor world with an a-seasonal collection of “urban trekking” sneakers and colourful pool slides.

MAIORANO (Italy) Designer Emanuele Coppari imagines a world of “hot” couture. The shoes are striking for their fine craftsmanship and elegance but also for sensual details such as the ankle band that once unhooked turns into a pair of handcuffs, the accessory that transforms into a mask or the tails/whips that can be positioned on the back of the pump. Prized nappa leather, soft suede, calfskin and patent leather of the highest quality, laminated mirrored python and lace are worked and shaped to create unique and unmistakable products. Every single piece is handmade by the best craftspeople of the Marche region, with components that can be interchanged playfully to take on a new look.

Un mondo di “hot” couture quello immaginato dal designer Emanuele Coppari. Le calzature colpiscono per la raffinatezza e l’eleganza ma anche i dettagli sensuali come la cavigliera che una volta sganciata si trasforma in un paio di manette, l’accessorio che si trasforma in una mascherina o le code/frustino posizionabili sul retro della decolleté. The colour and decorations of the handcrafted models can be customised according to the client’s requests and the special characteristics of raffia, such as softness and freshness, with continuous use are able to wrap the foot like a glove.

Come ci ha raccontato Umberto De Marco, al centro della filosofia del brand c’è la sostenibilità a 360 gradi: l’80% delle loro calzature è biodegradabile grazie ai materiali usati che provengono dal mais e dai cereali o sono in ogni caso riciclati/riciclabili. Arsutoria School at Milan Fashion Week IN DIGITAL FORM, OF COURSE, BUT ALSO THIS YEAR THE BEST STUDENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR FOOTWEAR AND LEATHER GOODS DESIGNERS/PATTERN MAKERS ENJOYED THE MORE THAN UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THEIR WORKS IN A PRESTIGIOUS SETTING. During the last Milan Fashion Week, Arsutoria School students once again had the memorable opportunity to show their work during one of the most important international events for the fashion sector.

The Milanese institute for footwear and leather goods designers/pattern makers, together with 11 schools of the Fashion Training System Platform, was in fact protagonist of an innovative digital edition of Fashion Graduate Italia.

Donato Medici, President of the Fashion Training System Platform, emphasises the importance of the occasion: “For the Fashion Training System Platform, joining the Milan Fashion Week programme is a source of satisfaction and pride. The two worlds of training and fashion industry, are in constant dialogue and are able to communicate in a common space.”

The synergy of intentions between the National Chamber of Italian Fashion and the Fashion Training System Platform Association has put in place an initiative aimed at enhancing the system of Italian fashion schools at national and international level and favouring their encounter with the fashion industry.

On the Fashion Graduate Italia platform the digital performance, creativity and talent of the students belonging to the schools that have joined the initiative are still visible today. On show the images of the students’ collections through photographic lookbooks and, above all, Fashion Films made by each school, to tell about its philosophy and show the students’ collections.

Durante la scorsa Milano Fashion Week, gli studenti di Arsutoria School hanno avuto, ancora una volta, la memorabile occasione di mostrare i loro lavori durante una delle manifestazioni internazionali più importanti per il settore moda.

L’istituto milanese per stilisti/modellisti di calzature e pelletteria, insieme a 11 scuole di Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda (PSFM), è stata infatti protagonista di un’innovativa edizione digitale di Fashion Graduate Italia. È Donato Medici, Presidente di Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda, a sottolineare l’importanza dell’occasione: “Per Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda entrare a far parte del programma della Milano Fashion Week eÌ motivo di soddisfazione e orgoglio. Due mondi, quello della formazione e quello dell’industria fashion, in costante dialogo e che possono comunicare in uno spazio comune.”

A New Point Of View by Lineapelle won the bet THE SPECIAL EVENT DESIGNED TO OVERCOME THE DIFFICULTIES OF THIS 2020 ALLOWED THE 326 EXHIBITORS PRESENT (TANNERIES, MANUFACTURERS OF ACCESSORIES, COMPONENTS, FABRICS AND SYNTHETIC MATERIALS, CHEMICALS AND TECHNOLOGICAL SERVICES) TO MEET A LIVELY AUDIENCE OF BUYERS It was not easy and it was not obvious to be able to organise an event that would provide a clear sign of responsibility and optimism to the fashion and luxury supply chain.

Built around a smart display formula, characterised by a sober, but welcoming setting, A New Point Of View involved its reference community in phygital mode, presenting the trends for the 2021/2022 Winter season based on the The Era Of Simplifying 2 - Slow Is The New Hot mood.

Thanks to a rich schedule of streaming events, the phygital mode of A New Point Of View made it possible to total over 120,000 interactions from 30 countries on the social platforms of Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn in only 2 days. As for the dominant trends, the same organisers of A New Point Of View described the emerging concepts as follows: “A desire to develop stylistic scenarios capable of balancing, within them, a reassuring revisitation of classic themes with surprising flashes of contemporaneity. Renewing and strengthening the structural common denominator’s dimension of the sustainable mission of the leather supply chain”.

FIGURES OF THE SECTOR The event also represented an opportunity to reflect on the difficult numbers that tell all about the sector for the first half of the year. The Italian tanning industry is estimated to have lost a total seasonal turnover of 31% and 23% of production volume compared to the previous year. Significant changes concern also data regarding the foreign trade of the sector in terms of tanned and finished raw materials. Import volumes in Italy fell by 18% for raw hides and by 24% for semi-finished products, while the total drop of national exports of finished leathers was equal to 34% in value.

The analysis of individual flows of Italian exports of finished products by country of destination does not show great differences between the main markets reached, all with decreases approximately between 20% and 40%.

Fabrics, synthetics and leather substitutes are obviously also in crisis, with an average loss of turnover equal to 25% for EU producers compared to 2019. The trend of synthetic material and synthetic and artificial fibre fabrics is critical, in the face of a serious drop in regenerated leather fibers, whose overall sales are more than halved seasonally.

Heavy decreases in turnover also for accessories and components, where the average of European production records a decline of 26% in the first part of the year.

Costruita attorno a una formula espositiva smart, caratterizzata da un allestimento sobrio, ma accogliente, A New Point Of View ha coinvolto la sua community di riferimento in modalità phygital, presentando le tendenze per la stagione invernale 2021/2022 basate sul mood The Era Of Simplifying 2 – Slow Is The New Hot. La modalità phygital di A New Point Of View ha permesso, grazie a un ricco palinsesto di eventi in streaming, di totalizzare in 2 giorni oltre 120.000 interazioni da 30 Paesi sulle piattaforme social di Youtube, Instagram, Facebook e LinkedIn. Per quanto riguarda i trend dominanti, sono emersi concetti che gli stessi organizzatori di A New Point Of View hanno così descritto: “La volontà di sviluppare scenari stilistici capaci di equilibrare, al loro interno, una rassicurante rielaborazione del classico con sorprendenti guizzi di contemporaneità. Rinnovando e rafforzando la dimensione di strutturale denominatore comune della mission sostenibile della filiera pelle”.

I NUMERI DEL SETTORE L’evento ha rappresentato anche l’occasione per riflettere sui difficili numeri che raccontano il settore per il primo semestre dell’anno.

L’industria conciaria italiana eÌ stimata aver complessivamente perso il 31% di fatturato stagionale ed il 23% di produzione in volume rispetto al corrispettivo dell’anno passato.

Notevoli variazioni anche dei dati riguardanti il commercio estero di settore in merito a materia prima conciaria e finito. I volumi di import in Italia sono scesi del 18% per le pelli grezze e del 24% per le semilavorate, mentre, per quanto concerne le esportazioni nazionali di pelli finite, il calo totale eÌ stato pari al 34% del valore.

L’analisi dei singoli flussi di export italiano di finito per Paese di destinazione non mostra grandi differenze tra i principali mercati raggiunti, tutti con decrementi compresi tra il 20% e il 40% circa.

Ovviamente in crisi anche tessuti, sintetici e succedanei della pelle, con una perdita media di fatturato rispetto al 2019 pari al 25% per i produttori UE. Critico l’andamento di sintetico e tessuti di fibre sintetiche e artificiali, a fronte di un grave ribasso per il rigenerato di fibre di cuoio, le cui vendite complessive risultano più che dimezzate a livello stagionale.

Pesanti ribassi di fatturato anche per accessori e componenti, dove la media delle produzioni europee registra un calo del 26% nel primo parziale dell’anno.

Creating leather products is as relevant today as it was 1000 years ago. Leather is one of man’s earliest and most useful discoveries. Our ancestors used leather to protect themselves from the elements. Primitive man hunted wild animals for food, then made clothing, footwear and crude tents from the hides. Like then, most hides used today are a by-product of the meat industry. Animals are commercially farmed for the meat and dairy; offering by-products like hides / skins, wool and feathers. It is amazing that you can take what used to be a waste product and make it a useful and beautiful material which morphed into a fashionable, sought-after essential.

In the leather industry, the financial value of hides and skins is not big enough for someone to keep animals for the leather only. The hides and skins are not the determining product.

Manufacturing a high-quality and sustainable product from them is in fact a service to society.

We need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and all things plastic made from them. Renewable raw materials that come from natural origins like leather are vital. Products must be made with aftercare, repair and refurbishment in mind as long product life is one of the biggest savings of virgin material and emissions.

Cape Karoo International ci accompagna nell’interessante storia dell’industria della pelle, in particolare della pregiata pelle di struzzo. Un omaggio alla sostenibilità e alla tradizione di un materiale che accompagna da sempre l’umanità.

Il linguaggio della pelle di struzzo CKI racconta la storia della longevità e della comodità delle creazioni in pelle di struzzo, che invecchiano magnificamente grazie alla patina naturale regalata dal tempo che scorre.

I prodotti in vera pelle invecchiano meravigliosamente. Possono cambiare colore e assumere un proprio carattere durante il normale utilizzo, ma se ti prendi cura di un prodotto in pelle, oltre a divenire sempre più bello, ti durerà anche tutta la vita. Ad esempio, una borsa ben realizzata avrà un aspetto migliore nel tempo e durerà ben oltre quanto previsto.

La creazione di prodotti in pelle è importante oggi come lo era 1000 anni fa. La pelle è una delle prime e più utili scoperte dell'uomo. I nostri antenati usavano la pelle per proteggersi dagli elementi. L'uomo primitivo cacciava animali selvatici per il cibo, per poi crearsi vestiti, calzature e rozze tende con le loro pelli. Come allora, anche oggi la quasi totalità delle pelli utilizzate risultano un sottoprodotto dell'industria della carne. Gli animali, allevati commercialmente per carne e latte, offrono, poi, sottoprodotti come pelli, lana e piume.

Ed è incredibile come si possa trasformare quello che sarebbe un prodotto di scarto in un materiale utile e bello, trasformarlo in un elemento essenziale e ricercato per la moda. Il valore finanziario dell'industria della pelle non giustificherebbe di per sé l’allevamento di bestiame. Le pelli, infatti, non rappresentano un prodotto determinante. In realtà il mondo delle concerie offre un servizio alla società trasformando uno scarto destinato alla discarica in un prodotto di alta qualità e sostenibile.

Le materie prime rinnovabili di origine naturale, come la pelle, sono vieppiù fondamentali nella ormai dichiarata battaglia per la riduzione della nostra dipendenza dai combustibili fossili e dai loro derivati di plastica.

Quando un prodotto è realizzato tenendo conto di caratteristiche come curabilità, riparabilità e rinnovabilità, significa che viene creato un prodotto di lunga durata, cioè un prodotto in grado di assicurare uno dei maggiori risparmi di materiale vergine ed emissioni.

La corposa storia di CKI - Cape Karoo International risale al 1860, quando l'allevamento commerciale di struzzi ebbe origine nel Klein Karoo. Oggi, CKI è il principale produttore mondiale di pelle di struz-

gered or rare animal species. These types of exotic leather are regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). CITES plays an important role in conserving rare species and ensuring that they are protected from extinction.

Cape Karoo breeds a specific species of ostrich (Struthio Camelus Domesticus or SA Black) that is one of the rare exceptions, being part of a handful of exotics that are not regulated

by CITES. This is because these birds are very well regulated and farmed commercially on registered farms. SA Black Ostriches are classified as a composite breed that was developed in the early 1900’s.

The effectiveness of current production practices allows for no need to harvest wild, pure populations. The only necessity for the export of ostrich leather is the accompaniment of a Certificate of Origin.

Even though ostriches are not regulated by CITES, there are still various organizations and regulations in place to ensure that all animals are treated in ethical and safe conditions and receive humane care through the entire process. Ostrich farmers associated with Cape Karoo must comply with 5 basic animal care freedoms: 1. Freedom from hunger or thirst All animals must have easy access to clean drinking water and should be provided with a balanced, appropriate diet to suit their needs.

2. Freedom from discomfort An appropriate environment must be created that includes ample space, shelter and a comfortable resting area where needed.

3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease The health of the birds must be monitored continuously so that prevention, rapid diagnosis and treatment can be provided.

4. Freedom to express normal behaviour An atmosphere must be created that mimics the birds’ natural habitat as closely as possible, which includes enough space and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from fear and distress Provision of an environment conducive to behaviour which does not lead to conditions of fear and distress.

Ostriches are classified as free-range animals accustomed to the extreme heat and cold associated with semi-desert and arid regions of the world. Young ostriches are provided with shelters and heating during extreme cold, but as they mature, they prefer not to make use of their shelters and rather roam free in the natural climate. Environmental conditions such as shade and cooling are however still given to protect the animals in times of extreme heat waves.

Gli allevatori di struzzi associati a Cape Karoo devono rispettare 5 libertà fondamentali per la cura degli animali: 1. 5. Libertà dalla paura e dall'angoscia Devono vivere in un ambiente che favorisca comportamenti che non conducano a condizioni di paura e angoscia.

Gli struzzi sono classificati come animali ruspanti abituati a caldo e freddo estremi associati alle regioni semidesertiche e aride del mondo. I giovani struzzi sono dotati di riparo e riscaldamento durante il freddo estremo, ma man mano che maturano preferiscono non utilizzare i loro ripari e vagano piuttosto liberi nel clima naturale. Le condizioni ambientali come l'ombra e il raffreddamento sono previste per proteggere gli animali in tempi di ondate di calore estreme.

I macelli sudafricani devono rispettare gli standard europei e le rigide normative nazionali e internazionali che regolano i metodi di macellazione. La tecnologia più avanzata disponibile viene utilizzata per rendere il processo di macellazione il più umano possibile.

The industry is very well organized. The Provincial Departments of Agriculture, the South African Ostrich Business Chamber and the NSPCA continually monitor the entire process. These organizations help ensure that the industry complies with international standards in farming practices, animal welfare, processing, exporting, biodiversity, management, biosecurity and the humane treatment of animals.

Processing plants are inspected by Provincial and National Departments of Agriculture, as well as various client 3rd party auditing firms. An on-site veterinarian warrants that all health and welfare regulations are met. All ostrich farms are registered and subject to inspections twice a year. A specifically designed surveillance program continuously monitors each production unit.

Cape Karoo International does not have any tolerance for the unethical or inhumane treatment of animals. L'industria è molto ben organizzata. I Dipartimenti provinciali dell'agricoltura, la Camera degli affari dello struzzo sudafricano e l'NSPCA monitorano continuamente l'intero processo. Queste organizzazioni contribuiscono a garantire che l'industria sia conforme agli standard internazionali in materia di pratiche agricole, benessere degli animali, lavorazione, esportazione, biodiversità, gestione, bio-sicurezza e trattamento umano degli animali.

Gli impianti di lavorazione sono controllati dai Dipartimenti provinciali e nazionali dell'Agricoltura, nonché da varie società di revisione di terze parti ingaggiate dai clienti. Un veterinario in loco garantisce che tutte le normative in materia di salute e benessere siano soddisfatte. Tutti gli allevamenti di struzzi sono registrati e soggetti a ispezione due volte l'anno. Un programma di sorveglianza appositamente progettato monitora continuamente ogni unità di produzione.

ARSUTORIA SCHOOL: an important podium for CKI Ostrich Leather

For each designer the knowledge of materials is of particular importance within the creative process. Knowing how to treat, enhance and make the most of a material is the basis for creating beautiful, functional and prestigious products.

Cape Karoo International knows this well and therefore is proud to continue the important work done by the SAOBC with ARSUTORIA school for the past 10 years in promoting the qualities and characteristics of ostrich leather at the famous Milanese school of young fashion accessories designers and model makers.

For students, it is an excellent training opportunity to have at their disposal valuable ostrich skins from CKI to study and learn about with a view to developing a small collection of shoes and bags. In fact, in the factory inside the school, they were able to learn how to treat ostrich leather from CKI, to discover their main features, as well as learning how to use them correctly for a prototype or for any other industrial production.

Per ogni designer la conoscenza dei materiali è di particolare importanza all’interno del processo creativo. Saper trattare, valorizzare e sfruttare al meglio un materiale è la base per creare prodotti belli, funzionali e di prestigio.

Cape Karoo International lo sa bene ed è quindi orgogliosa di continuare l’importante lavoro svolto da SAOBC con la scuola ARSUTORIA negli ultimi 10 anni nel promuovere le qualità e le caratteristiche della pelle di struzzo nella famosa scuola milanese di giovani designer di accessori di moda e modellisti.

Per gli studenti è un’eccellente opportunità di formazione avere a disposizione preziose pelli di struzzo della CKI per studiarla e conoscerla al fine di sviluppare una piccola collezione di scarpe e borse. Infatti, nella fabbrica interna alla scuola, hanno potuto imparare a trattare la pelle di struzzo di CKI, a scoprirne le caratteristiche principali e a usarle correttamente per realizzare un prototipo o per qualsiasi altra produzione industriale.

With numerous laboratory tests confirming its effectiveness, the Research & Development team of Gruppo Mastrotto has designed, produced in-house and patented a brand new treatment that eliminates 99.9% of the viruses and bacteria that might be found on leather. Acting as a surface barrier, it prevents the replication of pathogens that may come into contact with the leather. In fact, the surfaces of objects – especially those that are handled and used by many people – can be contaminated with bacteria and viruses, turning them into a disease vector.

A workshop with a bona fide “glocal” philosophy, strong from its creative research on a global scale, which is completed by the excellence of local manufacturing: Serena Cecchini Design.

The reality is born from the meeting between the creative souls of Serena Cecchini and Edoardo Filippo Marsili. The former, raised in the world of Tuscan craftsmanship where she was able to develop and build upon her expertise in the field of footwear and accessories at the company owned by her family, then went on to expand her horizons by doing research worldwide in places like London, Paris, Hamburg, New York, and the much beloved Mumbai, where she learned techniques of hand embroidery and developed a strong awareness in terms of fabric and colour combinations. The latter, instead, after getting his degree course at D.A.M.S. in Bologna and a Master’s in industrial photography and digital post-production in Milan, finished his education in the Far East, to then dedicate himself to photography and graphics, and later become an entrepreneur in the apparel and footwear retail industry.

Serena and Edoardo accordingly decided to combine their respective experiences, so they could specialize themselves in the construction of decorations and accessories destined for all fashion industry segments, from footwear to leather goods, and from apparel to furnishings, giving life in 2007 to Serena Cecchini Design.

“Today, our structure hosts a complete creative workshop where all the accessories and decorations are conceived, with an adjoining factory where the products take life thanks to the skilled hands of local artisans who use raw materials of the highest quality, from strictly Made in Italy finished leathers, to synthetics and textiles imported from China and India. Then there is a showroom perfect for meeting up with clientele – explains Edoardo Filippo Marsili. However, that which truly qualifies the Serena Cecchini Design proposal is the company’s constant research: the study of global fashion trends, which are reinterpreted in a creative way through the creation of at least four annual moodboards, that provides inspiration to demanding high fashion customers in creating their collections. Serena ed Edoardo hanno così deciso di unire le rispettive esperienze, per concentrarsi sul mondo del decoro e dell'accessorio pensando di declinarlo a tutti i settori della moda, dalla calzatura alla pelletteria, dall'abbigliamento all'arredamento, dando vita nel 2007 al Serena Cecchini Design.

In memory of Filippo Brancati THE LATEST EDITION OF NEW POINT OF VIEW - LINEAPELLE MISSED FOR THE FIRST TIME FILIPPO BRANCATI, SALES MANAGER OF THE MONTEBELLO TANNERY, WHO PASSED AWAY DUE TO A SERIOUS ILLNESS. The whole company Edizioni AF is close to his wife Nadia, his children Marika and Massimo, and to the Montebello team for the loss they had to suffer on last 15 September.

Filippo Brancati joined the tannery in 1990 - together with Franco Dalle Mese, son of the tannery’s founder, Giuseppe Dalle Mese – and was in charge of managing all the business dynamics of the Venetian tannery.

We pay tribute to him by publishing the memory that Franco Dalle Mese wanted to share.

DON’T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA “Don’t cry for me Argentina” was one of Pippo’s favorite songs, one of his many mottos: an incitement to be positive, negativity was not contemplated. When I met Pippo I was young and I had been working in the Tannery alongside my father for a few years. He was about to become my brother-in-law but I didn’t know we would share family, friendship and work, a lifetime. At nineteen, while he was studying economics and business at the university, he was already working as an accountant in a construction company in Montebello Ionico (RC). Later he would be in charge of administration and sales at Diano spa, one of the largest companies in the region’s sector. In 1987 he moved with my sister Nadia to the Veneto region and joined the management of Conceria Montebello (VI), at the time little more than a small artisanal business producing leather for the footwear and furniture sector.

Pippo was a man of numbers, over the years he helped us to develop a solid administrative structure and together we built the first real international sales network.

Collaborations with stylists and the discovery of the fashion world began. We felt like conquerors to the sound of guitars and mortadella sandwiches. We made the first trips overseas together. Our marketing had gone as far as the top floor of a presidential suite in Hong Kong where Pippo cooked spaghetti with tomato sauce for our customers, seasoned with fresh basil transported with a seedling hidden in a suitcase.

Pippo was a rigorously made in Italy man. He also managed to found a farm, which produces wine and oil in the Calabria region. He was very proud of his organic products and of being able to share the scents of his sea and his beloved land with everyone. Thanks to my father and Pippo, in California we founded Omnia Italian design, a company of living rooms. Ironically, the factories are located a stone’s throw from Montebello (CA). A lasting and deep collaboration has been created with our partners Salvatore and Emilio and afterwards with their sons Peter and Luigi. Just one of many examples of his respect and dedication to collaborators and employees.

Pippo was as much reserved in his private life as welcoming he was towards the outside: in his life he never left anyone out, he had a rare concern for people and an insatiable desire of being in good company. At work, as in his life, he walked proudly with his strong character, always looking at things with enthusiasm, there were no problems, only solutions for him. From Pippo I learned that you must never get down on yourself and that even in the most difficult situations you must be able to see opportunities. Pippo was there for every decision made, for every won or lost battle, every success and every important moment. We have built healthy companies together involving our children thanks to passion and commitment. Despite the different characters and our heated discussions, I know I have lost the other side of my coin. A brother, a friend, an irreplaceable business partner. Montebello is a place and many places, that sum up his journey and his career. Montebello is a family that remembers and breathes him throughout his long history. Montebello retains his strength. Thank you Pippo.

Tutta Edizioni AF è vicina alla moglie Nadia, ai figli Marika e Massimo, e al team Montebello per la perdita che ha dovuto subire lo scorso 15 settembre.

Filippo Brancati entrato in conceria nel 1990 - insieme a Franco Dalle Mese, figlio del fondatore della conceria, Giuseppe Dalle Mese - aveva in carico la gestione di tutte le dinamiche commerciali della conceria veneta.

Gli rendiamo omaggio pubblicando il commovente ricordo che Franco Dalle Mese ha voluto condividere.

DON’T CRY FOR ME ARGETNINA “Don’t cry for me Argentina” era una delle canzoni preferite di Pippo, uno dei suoi tanti motti: un’incitazione all’essere positivi, la negatività non era contemplata. Quando ho conosciuto Pippo ero giovane e avevo cominciato a lavorare in Conceria a fianco di mio padre da qualche anno. Stava per diventare mio cognato ma non sapevo che avremmo condiviso famiglia, amicizia e lavoro, tutta una vita.

A diciannove anni, mentre studiava economia e commercio all’università, lavorava già come ragioniere in una società di costruzioni a Montebello Ionico (RC). Più tardi si sarebbe occupato di amministrazione e vendite in Diano spa, una delle più grandi aziende del settore nella regione. Nel 1987 si trasferisce con mia sorella Nadia in Veneto ed entra a far parte del management di Conceria Montebello (VI), all’epoca una piccola impresa poco più che artigianale che produceva pelli per calzatura e arredamento.

Pippo era un uomo di numeri, ci ha aiutati negli anni a sviluppare una struttura amministrativa solida e insieme abbiamo costruito una prima vera rete vendite internazionale. Sono cominciate le collaborazioni con gli stilisti e la scoperta del mondo della moda. A suon di chitarre e panini con la mortadella ci sentivamo dei conquistatori. Insieme abbiamo fatto i primi viaggi oltreoceano. Il nostro marketing si era spinto fino all’ultimo piano di una suite presidenziale ad Hong Kong dove Pippo ha cucinato per i nostri clienti spaghetti al pomodoro, conditi con basilico fresco trasportato con una piantina nascosta in valigia. Pippo era un uomo rigorosamente made in Italy. È anche riuscito a fondare un’azienda agricola, che produce vino e olio in Calabria. Era molto orgoglioso dei suoi prodotti biologici e di poter condividere con tutti i profumi del suo mare e della sua adorata terra.

Grazie a mio padre e Pippo abbiamo fondato un’azienda di salotti in California, Omnia Italian desgin. Ironicamente gli stabilimenti si trovano a due passi da Montebello (CA). Con i nostri partner Salvatore ed Emilio e successivamente i figli Peter e Luigi si è creata una collaborazione duratura e profonda. Solo uno dei molti esempi del suo rispetto e della sua dedizione verso i collaboratori e dipendenti.

Pippo è stato tanto riservato nel suo privato quanto accogliente verso l’esterno: nella sua vita non ha mai lasciato fuori nessuno, una rara premura verso le persone e un desiderio insaziabile di buona compagnia. Sul lavoro, come nella vita, camminava fiero col suo carattere forte, guardando sempre alle cose con entusiasmo, per lui non esistevano problemi, soltanto soluzioni. Da Pippo ho imparato che non ci si deve mai buttare giù e che anche nelle situazioni più difficili bisogna saper scorgere delle opportunità.

Pippo c’è stato per ogni decisione presa, per ogni battaglia, vinta o persa, ogni successo ottenuto e ogni momento importante. Insieme abbiamo costruito aziende sane e coinvolto i nostri figli grazie alla passione e all’impegno. Nonostante i caratteri differenti e le nostre accese discussioni, so di aver perso l’altra faccia della mia medaglia. Un fratello, un amico, un insostituibile partner di lavoro.

Towards the recycled shoe DURING LINEAPELLE OLIANS, ASOLTEX AND INDUSTRIA CHIMICA MEDITERRANEA PRESENTED A SHOE PROJECT MADE WITH RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE COMPONENTS. A CONCRETE LOOK TOWARD THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE FOOTWEAR The 2030 Agenda drawn up by the UN sets 17 objectives regarding sustainable development aimed at people, our planet and its prosperity; point 12 emphasises the importance of guaranteeing production and consumption models that aim at “doing more and better with less”. Following these indications Olians has decided to found "OLIANS 4 R.ECYCLE", a new division that deals with the production of thermoplastic polymers from pre-consumer by-products, and thus creating opportunities and resources from what until now was considered nothing else but waste.

What is meant by pre-consumer recycling? The recovery of all those by-products (scraps/production waste) daily generated during the various production processes. Most of these by-products are still destined for disposal in already exhausted landfills and not properly organised for their management. Unlike post-consumer recycling, what is recycled has not yet been used by the market.

Olians 4 R.ecycle has decided to focus on this type of recycling by developing a series of recycled TPUs in different colours, from black to white, up to an innovative recycled material in a transparent/opal version, which allows it to be subsequently added with master to obtain whatever desired colour.

The constant verification of the quality of the recovered scraps allows Olians 4 R.ecycle to transform them into a product with features comparable to a first choice material, with recycled percentages that can reach a use of about 95% . Moreover, thanks to an innovative colour sorting system, Olians 4 R.ecycle is able to recover mixed multicolour production scraps and divide them colour by color as needed.

Thanks to this new recycling technology, Olians 4 R.ecycle can be called the first Italian company in the TPU field to have obtained, for pre-consumer recycling, the GRS Global Recycled Standard certification, the most widespread certification in the world, that guarantees the use of recycled raw materials within a production process or product. Furthermore, Olians 4 R.ecycle uses a verified by-product management system deemed compliant to operate according to the UNI 10667 - 2017 standard by I.I.P. the Italian Institute of Plastics - one of the most important systems and product certification bodies in the plastics supply chain.

RECYCLED SHOE PROJECT During the latest Lineapelle edition, Olians 4 R.ecycle also promoted a project aimed at making the world of fashion and footwear understand how, even today, it is possible to make a shoe produced with recycled and recyclable materials, obtaining models that do not differ in anything, neither in quality nor in aesthetics, from those made until now.

To do this, Olians, which developed recycled base materials used to make the sole, involved some strategic partners such as Asoltex, which made all the recycled fabrics used in the upper, and Industria Chimica Mediterranea, supplier of green tips and counters.

Some brands have already focused on this project, but it can also be embraced by brands that aim at large-scale distribution.

Verso la scarpa riciclata A LINEAPELLE, OLIANS, ASOLTEX E INDUSTRIA CHIMICA MEDITERRANEA HANNO PRESENTATO UN PROGETTO DI SCARPA REALIZZATA CON COMPONENTI RICICLATE E RICICLABILI. UNO SGUARDO CONCRETO SUL FUTURO DELLA CALZATURA SOSTENIBILE L’Agenda 2030 stilata dall'Onu fissa 17 obiettivi riguardanti lo sviluppo sostenibile mirato alle persone, al nostro pianeta e alla sua prosperità; al punto 12 si sottolinea l'importanza di garantire modelli di produzione e consumo che puntino a “fare di più e meglio con meno". Seguendo queste indicazioni Olians ha deciso di fondare la "OLIANS 4 R.ECYCLE", una nuova divisione che si occupa della produzione di polimeri termoplastici da sottoprodotti pre-consumo, e creare così opportunità e risorse da ciò che fino a oggi veniva considerato nulla più che un rifiuto. Ma che cosa si intende per riciclo pre-consumo? Il recupero di tutti quei sottoprodotti (sfridi/scarti di produzione) che sono quotidianamente generati durante i vari processi produttivi. La gran parte di questi sottoprodotti viene tutt'oggi destinata allo smaltimento in discariche, già di per sé esauste e non opportunamente organizzate per la loro gestione. A differenza del riciclo post-consumo ciò che si ricicla non è ancora stato utilizzato dal mercato.

Olians 4 R.ecycle ha deciso di puntare su questo tipo di riciclo mettendo a punto una serie di TPU riciclati in diverse colorazioni, dal nero al bianco, fino a un innovativo materiale riciclato in versione trasparente/opalino, che permette di essere successivamente additivato con master per ottenere qualunque colore.

La verifica costante della qualità degli sfridi recuperati consente a Olians 4 R.ecycle di trasformarli in un prodotto con caratteristiche paragonabili a un materiale di prima scelta, con percentuali riciclate che possono arrivare a un impiego di circa il 95%.

Inoltre, grazie a un innovativo impianto di sorting by colour, Olians 4 R.ecycle riesce a recuperare sfridi di produzione miscelati multicolor e dividerli colore per colore secondo necessità.

Grazie a questa nuova tecnologia di riciclo Olians 4 R.ecycle può dirsi la prima azienda italiana nel campo del TPU ad aver ottenuto, per il riciclo pre-consumo, la certificazione GRS Global Recycled Standard, la più diffusa certificazione al mondo, che garantisce l'impiego di materie prime riciclate all'interno di un processo produttivo o di un prodotto.

Inoltre, Olians 4 R.ecycle utilizza un sistema di gestione del sottoprodotto verificato e ritenuto conforme a operare secondo la norma UNI 10667 - 2017 da I.I.P. l’Istituto Italiano dei Plastici - uno tra i più importanti organi di certificazione di sistema e di prodotto nella filiera delle materie plastiche.

RECYCLED SHOE PROJECT Durante l’ultima edizione di Lineapelle Olians 4 R.ecycle si è anche fatta promotrice di un progetto teso a far comprendere al mondo della moda e della calzatura come sia possibile, già oggi, realizzare una scarpa prodotta con materiali riciclati e riciclabili, ottenendo modelli che non si discostano in nulla, né per qualità né per estetica, da quelli realizzati fino a ora.

Per farlo Olians, che ha messo a punto i materiali di base riciclati utilizzati per realizzare la suola, ha coinvolto alcuni partner strategici come Asoltex, che ha realizzato tutti i tessuti riciclati utilizzati nella tomaia, e Industria Chimica Mediterranea fornitrice di puntali e contrafforti green.

Un progetto su cui alcune griffe hanno già puntato, ma che può benissimo essere abbracciato anche da marchi che puntano alla grande distribuzione.

Bands for state-of-the-art bottoms RUBEK HAS BEEN PRODUCING LEATHER BANDS FOR WEDGE HEELS, PLATEAU SHOES AND FOOTWEAR BOTTOMS SINCE 1977 The company based in Morrovalle (MC) has been producing leather bands for more than 40 years, mainly used to cover, embellish and make wedges, plateau shoes, women heels, as well as many other types of trendy footwear, including those for men and children.

What does wrapping a bottom mean and what is it used for? The band consists of a single piece to be applied on the outer side of the sole with a single joint in the inner part of the shoe, the use of which allows to obtain multiple effects that finish the bottom of the footwear in a pretty much precious or imaginative way. The achievable effects obviously vary according to the materials used. In the case of Rubek we mainly talk about leather used in different variations: raw, decorated, polished, glued, milled.

Leather that gives life to strips that can be applied both manually and by means of an industrial injection process.

In recent years, however, Rubek also added the use of new microporous materials to the production of leather bands offering the possibility of applying bands with a wide variety of colours.

No doubt, those who rely on Rubek will be able to appreciate two values in particular: the excellent quality of a made in Italy production and the willingness to follow customers in the creation of bandages that can be customised in size, shape and colour.

Fasciature per fondi a regola d’arte RUBEK DAL 1977 PRODUCE FASCE IN CUOIO PER ZEPPE, PLATEAU E FONDI PER CALZATURE L’azienda di Morrovalle (MC) realizza da più di 40 anni fasce in cuoio principalmente utilizzate per ricoprire, impreziosire e rendere di tendenza zeppe, platò, tacchi donna, oltre a molti altri tipi di calzature fra cui anche quelle uomo e bambino.

Ma cosa è e a cosa serve fasciare un fondo? La fascia consiste di un unico pezzo da applicare sul lato esterno della suola con una sola giuntura nella parte interna della calzatura, il cui utilizzo consente di ottenere molteplici effetti che vanno a finire in modo più o meno prezioso o più o meno fantasioso il fondo di una calzatura.

Gli effetti ottenibili variano, ovviamente, in base ai materiali utilizzati. Nel caso di Rubek si parla principalmente di cuoio utilizzato in diverse varianti: grezzo, decorato, lucidato, filtaccato, fresato. Cuoio che dà vita a strisce applicabili sia manualmente che per mezzo di un processo industriale di iniezione.

Negli ultimi anni, però, Rubek ha affiancato alla produzione di fasce in cuoio anche l'utilizzo di nuovi materiali, come la microporosa, la quale offre la possibilità di applicare fasce dall’ampia varietà cromatica.

IINNOVATION INNOVAZIONE In the last year, TVC has launched research projects with other players in the footwear supply chain with a view to technological product innovation and process.

For example, from the collaboration with 3M was born CAMHEELION ™ which offers a new covering solution for heels.

Camheelion ™ is just like a chameleon, it changes its skin: it is an innovative heel line coated with a customisable film.

An extraordinary solution thanks to the use of 3M DINOC and 3M Envision films that offers endless possibilities in terms of design and customisation: material effects of wood and marble, but also colourful pop patterns.

Extraordinary also thanks to its high sustainability content. The materials used have, in fact, a low environmental impact and the use of films allows to reduce production waste to the maximum: while a minimum imperfection of the raw heel is enough to make it no longer suitable for galvanic and lacquering finishes, the film covered heel does not present this criticality.

Moreover, the use of films allows to cover previously lacquered or galvanised heels, giving them a second life.

Nell’ultimo anno TVC ha avviato progetti di ricerca con altri players della filiera calzaturiera in un’ottica di innovazione tecnologica di prodotto e processo.

Per esempio, la collaborazione con 3M, da cui è nato CAMHEELION™, una nuova soluzione di ricopertura per i tacchi.

Camheelion™ è proprio come un camaleonte, cambia la sua pelle: è una innovativa linea di tacchi rivestiti con una pellicola personalizzabile.

Una soluzione straordinaria grazie all’impiego delle pellicole 3M DI-NOC e 3M Envision che offre infinite possibilità dal punto di vista del design e della personalizzazione: effetti materici di legno e marmo, ma anche coloratissimi pattern pop.

Straordinaria anche grazie al suo alto contenuto di sostenibilità. I materiali utilizzati sono, infatti, a basso impatto ambientale e l’utilizzo di pellicole permette di ridurre al massimo gli scarti di produzione: mentre basta una minima imperfezione al tacco grezzo per non essere più adatto a rifiniture come galvaniche e laccature, il tacco rivestito con pellicola non presenta questa criticità.

Inoltre, l’uso di pellicole permette di ricoprire tacchi già precedentemente laccati o galvanizzati, ridando loro una seconda vita.

SUSTAINABILITY SOSTENIBILITÀ Thanks to important investments in Research & Development, today TVC is an important reference point for issues related to sustainability.

FHEELGREEN® is a concrete and tangible result: an alternative moulding material to traditional ABS that is characterised by excellent sustainability performance while maintaining the mechanical and aesthetic features, requested for the heel, unaltered.

FheelGreen® is characterised by the use of fewer resources (energy, water, etc.) in the production and transport phase with a consequent reduction in emissions in terms of GWP and output relevant for sustainability analysis. It is optimised for recycling and has no performance compromise.

Compared to traditional ABS, FheelGreen® has comparable or even better standard static mechanical properties.

The predisposition to the finishing processes (lacquering, electroplating, glueing), the dimensional stability and the surface quality are identical.

Performance related to regulatory fatigue, impact and pullout tests are also comparable.

And the projects referred to sustainability do not stop there. There are numerous solutions in the characterisation phase, such as solutions from recycling, from industrial and post-consumer waste, hybrid, biobased and biodegradable solutions.

Grazie agli importanti investimenti in Ricerca & Sviluppo, oggi TVC è un punto di riferimento importante anche per quanto riguarda i temi legati alla sostenibilità. Un concetto che abbraccia tutta la struttura aziendale e che si traduce in strategia di sviluppo.

FHEELGREEN® ne è un risultato concreto e tangibile: un materiale per lo stampaggio alternativo all’ABS tradizionale che si caratterizza per ottime performance di sostenibilità mantenendo inalterate le caratteristiche meccaniche ed estetiche richieste al tacco.

FheelGreen® si caratterizza per l’impiego di minori risorse (energetiche, idriche, ecc.) in fase di produzione e di trasporto con conseguente diminuzione di emissioni in termini di GWP e di output rilevanti per analisi di sostenibilità. È ottimizzato per il riciclo e non presenta alcun compromesso performativo.

Rispetto all’ABS tradizionale, FheelGreen® presenta proprietà meccaniche standard statiche comparabili o addirittura migliori. È identica la predisposizione ai processi di finitura (laccatura, galvanica, incollaggio), la stabilità dimensionale e la qualità superficiale. Sono confrontabili anche le performance riguardo i test normativi a fatica, urto e pullout.

E i progetti legati alla sostenibilità non si fermano qui. Sono numerose le soluzioni in fase di caratterizzazione, come le soluzioni da riciclo, da scarti industriali e post-consumo, le soluzioni ibride, biobased e biodegradabili.

OPTIMISATION OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES OTTIMIZZAZIONE PROCESSI PRODUTTIVI In the Fashion and Footwear sector, the prototyping and industrialisation phase can have a great impact on the environmental component due to the numerous tests and samples that are carried out before the model is definitely confirmed. For this reason, TVC has invested in preventive optimisation tools that allow preliminary (or final) engineering of the product in the digital environment, thus eliminating the environmental impact that repeated tests can cause.

An aspect that allows to further optimise also process resources, which to date are already satisfied up to 70% by the use of renewable photovoltaic and geothermal energy resources.

In ambito Fashion e Calzaturiero la fase di prototipia e di industrializzazione può impattare molto sulla componente ambientale per via delle numerose prove e campionature che vengono effettuate prima della conferma definitiva del modello. Per questo TVC ha investito in strumenti di ottimizzazione preventiva che consentono un’ingegnerizzazione preliminare (o finale) del prodotto in ambito digitale eliminando cosiÌ l’impatto ambientale che possono provocare i ripetuti test.

Un aspetto che consente di ottimizzare ulteriormente anche le risorse di processo, che ad oggi sono già soddisfatte per il 70% dall’utilizzo di risorse energetiche rinnovabili, come fotovoltaico e geotermico.

What do you wish your successor?

To trust that the leather and fashion industries have a bright future once this Covid-19 crisis is overcome. Grace already realized that the leather industry is like a big family and I am sure she will do a wonderful job at guiding the APLF business community towards a sustainable future.

Given your long experience in the sector and considering the current difficult situation, how do you think the world of trade fairs will evolve in the coming years?

Physical trade fairs are essential for the fashion related industries. A trade fair offers the possibility for the exhibitors to present their materials and products, for the buyers to touch them, (even smell them in case of leather) and for both sides to discuss how the materials or products can be modified and designed specifically to the expectations of the designer or buyer. Discussions started onsite can continue around a dinner table allowing buyers and sellers to get to know each other better.

Trade fairs are also the opportunity for the industry to learn about the latest trends and developments and to network during conferences and associations meetings.

That aspect is unique and cannot be fully replaced by online presentations. There will always be a need for the industry key players to meet face to face at trade shows. What may change post Covid-19 is the number of people travelling from the same company. If only key decision makers travel to attend trade shows, the fairs will become better curated events for specialists looking for specific products.

It is important for trade shows organisers to anticipate those changes. For example: the search for sustainability materials is now a must and for many brands it is not limited to the materials and components they use but it relates to their whole virtuous concept. It is therefore important for them that the fair can gather under the same roof not only materials producers but also all kinds of services from forwarders to packaging suppliers and financial institutions offering sustainable services. Post Covid 19, trade fairs are likely to become more focused and relevant to respond to the expectations of the industries they serve.

What are the most beautiful and important stages of your career?

There are so many… but I would like to mention all the programmes we co-created to add value to our attendees participation (conference programmes), highlight our exhibitors’ innovation and creativity (Best of APLF Awards) or the excellence in the tanning industry (Tannery of the Year) and also those that are not particularly related to a trade fair but help promote leather to brands and manufacturers (Understanding Leather), or to designers (Design A Bag Competition) and of course Leather Naturally promoting sustainable leather to the whole supply chain down to the consumer (with Metcha).

Data la sua lunga esperienza nel settore, e tenuto conto dell'attuale difficile situazione, qual è la sua opinione sull'evoluzione del mondo delle fiere campionarie nei prossimi anni?

Le fiere campionarie fisiche sono indispensabili per i settori correlati alla moda.

Una fiera campionaria offre agli espositori la possibilità di presentare i loro materiali e prodotti consentendo agli acquirenti di toccarli (e odorarli nel caso della pelle), e per entrambi gli attori discutere su come materiali e prodotti possano essere modificati e progettati secondo le esigenze specifiche dello stilista o dell'acquirente. Le conversazioni iniziate sul posto possono proseguire attorno a un tavolo da pranzo, consentendo ad acquirenti e rivenditori di conoscersi meglio reciprocamente. Le fiere campionarie danno anche l'opportunità al settore di scoprire le ultime tendenze e sviluppi, e di maturare conoscenze durante i convegni e gli incontri tra associazioni.

Questo aspetto è unico e non può essere interamente sostituito dalle presentazioni online. Vi sarà sempre la necessità, da parte dei protagonisti del settore, di incontrarsi faccia a faccia in occasione delle fiere. Ciò che potrebbe cambiare dopo il Covid-19 è il numero di persone viaggianti della stessa società. Se per prendere parte alle fiere viaggeranno i soli responsabili principali delle decisioni, le fiere diverranno eventi maggiormente curati, per specialisti alla ricerca di prodotti specifici. È importante che gli organizzatori delle fiere riescano ad anticipare questi cambiamenti. Ad esempio: la ricerca di materiali sostenibili è ora irrinunciabile, e per numerosi marchi non è limitata ai materiali e ai componenti utilizzati, ma è correlata all’intero loro concetto virtuoso. È pertanto importante per essi che la fiera sia in grado di riunire sotto lo stesso tetto non solo produttori di materiali ma anche tutti i tipi di servizi, dagli spedizionieri ai fornitori di imballi, agli istituti finanziari che offrono servizi sostenibili. Dopo il Covid-19, le fiere campionarie diverranno probabilmente più mirate e pertinenti, per rispondere alle aspettative dei settori a cui prestano servizio.

Quali sono le tappe più belle e importanti della sua carriera?

Ve ne sono così tante… vorrei però citare tutti i programmi che abbiamo creato in collaborazione, per valorizzare tutti i nostri partecipanti (programmi del convegno), sottolineare l’innovazione e la creatività dei nostri espositori (Best of APLF Awards) o la loro eccellenza nel settore conciario (Tannery of the Year), come pure di coloro che non sono particolarmente legati alla fiera campionaria ma contribuiscono a promuovere la pelle presso i marchi e i produttori (Understanding Leather) o gli stilisti (Design a Bag Competition), e certamente Leather Naturally

che promuove la pelle sostenibile presso l’intera catena logistica fino al consumatore (con Metcha).

Ci può raccontare un aneddoto che ricorda con simpatia?

Diversi anni fa, durante APLF, quando in occasione della Cena di Gala di Tannery of the Year la carne fu omessa per errore dal menu…

Quali persone sente di voler maggiormente ringraziare?

Tutti coloro dai quali ho imparato tantissimo su ciò che era necessario ad APLF per servire meglio il settore. Tutti i media e le organizzazioni che hanno accettato di collaborare con APLF per organizzare in collaborazione eventi e programmi significativi, e senz’altro la squadra internazionale APLF, che comprende moltissime persone capaci ed entusiaste che sono divenute miei amici.

Cosa vuole augurare a chi verrà dopo di lei?

Di aver fiducia che i settori conciario e della moda avranno un futuro luminoso non appena la crisi del Covid-19 sarà alle spalle. Grace ha già compreso che il settore conciario è come una grande famiglia, e sono sicura che farà un ottimo lavoro nel guidare la comunità imprenditoriale di APLF verso un futuro sostenibile.

Vuole aggiungere ancora qualcosa?

Per continuare il viaggio di APLF verso la sostenibilità, abbiamo appena varato il Comitato Direttivo della Sostenibilità di APLF, e il mio obiettivo è vederlo pubblicare un Manifesto all’inizio dell’anno prossimo, prima del mio ritiro definitivo.

A future with complementary physical and virtual fairs WE MEET GRACE LEE, WHO TAKES THE BATON FROM PERRINE ARDOUIN AT THE HELM OF APLF, IN AN INTERVIEW IN WHICH SHE EXPLAINS HER VISION ON THE WORLD OF FAIRS AND THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE EVENT WITH A FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY AND DIGITAL MARKETPLACE Can you briefly tell us about your career?

I joined the predecessor to Informa Markets in 2001. I first worked as a Sales Manager for APLF-Leather and ACLE and not long after, I was promoted to the position of Project Manager of those shows. I have been working for APLF and ACLE for 10 years before making my transition to the Business Development Department in 2011. In that position, I was involved in post M&A integration of trade fairs of various industries ranging from jewellery to food, from dental equipment to electronics in China, ASEAN and Turkey. I am now pleased to be back to APLF team as the Director of APLF Ltd. How do you think the trade fair world will evolve in the coming years?

When the “dot com boom” started in the last decade of the twentieth century, some people had foreseen that trade fairs would be eventually replaced by the internet, it hasn’t been the case. People still prefer meeting face to face, and trade fairs are undoubtedly still the best B2B platforms. The lockdowns and travel restrictions worldwide due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year will accelerate the development of virtual exhibitions. However, I still believe an annual physical meeting place is irreplaceable. People will still treasure the opportunity for face to face meetings and building relationships more than ever. I anticipate that physical and virtual exhibitions will complement each other in the future.

What are your plans and the initiatives you have in mind for APLF? This year, APLF, Fashion Access and ACLE have been postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Suppliers as well as buyers are desperately looking forward to the opening of international shows next year. It is our responsibility to ensure these shows will be successfully staged in 2021.

As the awareness of sustainability in the leather and fashion industry has been increasingly prioritised in today’s business world, APLF will actively promote and support this concept. APLF has been moving towards sustainability for many years and will become the number 1 sustainable sourcing platform in Asia.

APLF possesses a huge database comprising of valuable data for a broad range of both suppliers and buyers as a result of our worldwide experience of serving the leather and fashion industry for over thirty years. An APLF online marketplace will soon be developed to provide the business matching service to our customers 365 days a year.

What do you think are the most important needs of the footwear world that you could answer?

The retail business is one of the sectors that has suffered greatly during Covid-19, and subsequently the footwear manufacturing industry has been badly impacted.

It is about time for footwear manufacturers and brand owners to think for the long term and consider sustainability as an integral part in their design and production.

A good solution would be to adopt new strategies for innovative marketing and to improve their online marketing capability by upgrading their own website, online marketplace, social media, etc. APLF will be more than happy to provide the right platform for them to do that, both in the format of physical trade shows and online tools.

A greeting and a thought for Perrine?

Perrine has been an instrumental leader, dedicated, well respected and loved by the people in our industry. It is not difficult at all to feel her passion for fashion and sustainability as I have worked with her before. She will be dearly missed by many friends and colleagues. Sono entrata nella realtà precedente a Informa Markets nel 2001. Ho inizialmente lavorato come Direttore delle Vendite per APLF-Leather e ACLE e, poco dopo, sono stata promossa alla carica di Responsabile di Progetto di queste esposizioni.

Ho lavorato per APLF e ACLE per 10 anni prima di effettuare la transizione al Business Development Department nel 2011. In tale posizione mi sono occupata dell'integrazione post M&A delle fiere campionarie in diversi settori, dalla gioielleria al cibo, dalle apparecchiature odontoiatriche all'elettronica, in Cina, ASEAN e Turchia. Sono ora lieta di essere di nuovo nella squadra di APLF come Responsabile di APLF Ltd.

Poiché la consapevolezza sulla sostenibilità nei settori conciario e della moda è stata resa sempre più prioritaria nell'attuale mondo imprenditoriale, APLF stimolerà e sosterrà attivamente questa idea. APLF si è mossa per molti anni in direzione della sostenibilità, e diverrà la piattaforma nr. 1 di approvvigionamento sostenibile in Asia.

Come ritiene che il mondo delle fiere campionarie si evolverà nei prossimi anni?

Quando scoppiò la bolla delle "Dot-com" nell'ultimo decennio del ventesimo secolo, alcuni previdero che le fiere campionarie sarebbero state prima o poi sostituite da Internet, ma non fu così.

La gente preferisce ancora incontrarsi di persona, e le fiere campionarie restano senza dubbio le migliori piattaforme B2B. I lockdown e le restrizioni globali di quest'anno ai viaggi, dovute alla pandemia del Covid-19, accelereranno la realizzazione di fiere virtuali. Io tuttavia credo ancora che un luogo d'incontro fisico annuale sia insostituibile. Le persone faranno più che mai tesoro dell'opportunità degli incontri faccia a faccia e della costruzione di relazioni. Prevedo che le fiere fisiche e virtuali si completeranno in futuro a vicenda.

Quali crede che siano le principali esigenze del mondo calzaturiero alle quali ha potuto dare una risposta?

Il commercio al dettaglio è uno dei settori che hanno maggiormente sofferto durante la pandemia di Covid-19, e di conseguenza il settore manifatturiero delle calzature è stato pesantemente danneggiato. Per i produttori di calzature e i titolari dei marchi è giunto il momento di pensare a lungo termine, e considerare la sostenibilità una parte integrante della loro progettazione e produzione. Una buona soluzione sarebbe quella di adottare strategie nuove per un marketing innovativo, e migliorare le loro capacità di marketing online, riadeguando i loro siti web, le piattaforme online, i social media ecc. APLF sarà più che lieta di fornir loro la piattaforma giusta per questo obiettivo, nei formati di fiere fisiche e strumenti online.

Quali programmi e iniziative ha in mente per APLF? Quest'anno APLF, Fashion Access e ACLE sono state rinviate al 2021 a causa della pandemia del Covid-19. Fornitori e acquirenti stanno attendendo con ansia l'apertura delle esposizioni internazionali dell'anno prossimo. È nostro dovere garantire che queste esposizioni vengano presentate con successo nel 2021.

Un saluto e un pensiero per Perrine?

Perrine è stata una guida fondamentale, impegnata, molto rispettata e amata dagli operatori del nostro settore. È tutt'altro che difficile percepire la sua passione per la moda e la sostenibilità, avendo lavorato con lei in precedenza.
