2019 In prospectIve a new year starts. it has already started over a month ago, but for the sector it can be said that the year starts with the first major fairs. at the beginning of the year it is therfore always interesting to analyse prospects that await the sector, as the lineapelle observatory did well, going through signals highlighted by McKinsey - Business of Fashion, World Bank, iMF and oeCd. “in general, emerging countries (both in the asia-Pacific region and in europe) are expected to rise. the Chinese area should for the first time overtake the United States and become the first international fashion market. among other countries in the rapidly expanding asian continent, in 2019 india will assume a central role, and thanks to an expectation of macroeconomic growth of 8% until 2022 and a significant increase of the middle class, it will increasingly move from a strategic supplier role to that of the destination market for the consumption of fashion goods. Mature markets of North america and europe may slow down due to the effects of a change in the direction of monetary policy after years of expansion”, citing the lineapelle report. as for products: the world of sport (+7%) and leather goods (+5.5%) continue to grow, while footwear (+3%) and clothing products (+4%) keep a low profile.

What about challenges? they concern certainly not new themes: the digital world, with related challenges posed by an increasingly impatient consumer and by high expectations of speed and convenience; sustainability is considered by many a decisive theme to hope to conquer younger generations.

Il 2019 In prospettIva Inizia un nuovo anno. È già iniziato da più di un mese, ma per il settore si può dire che l’anno cominci con le prime fiere importanti.

E allora, a inizio anno, è sempre interessante analizzare le prospettive che attendono il comparto, come ha fatto ottimamente l’osservatorio di Lineapelle, andando a spulciare i segnali messi in luce da Mc Kinsey – Business Of Fashion, Banca Mondiale, FMI e OCSE. “In generale, i Paesi emergenti (sia dell’area Asia-Pacifico che in Europa) sono previsti in rialzo. L’area cinese dovrebbe per la prima volta sorpassare gli Stati Uniti e diventare il primo mercato della moda a livello internazionale. Fra gli altri Paesi del continente asiatico in rapida espansione, l’India assumerà nel 2019 un ruolo di centralità, e grazie a un’aspettativa di crescita macroeconomica all’8% fino al 2022 e ad un significativo incremento della classe media, passerà sempre più da un ruolo di fornitore strategico a quello di mercato di destinazione per il consumo di beni moda. I mercati maturi di Nord America ed Europa potranno subire un rallentamento per gli effetti di un cambiamento di rotta della politica monetaria dopo anni di espansione”, citando, appunto, il rapporto di Lineapelle.

Per quanto riguarda i prodotti: continuano a crescere il mondo dello sport (+7%) e della pelletteria (+5,5%), mentre calzatura (+3%) e abbigliamento (+4%) rimangono un po’ in sordina. Le sfide? Riguardano temi a cui non si è certo nuovi: mondo digitale, con relative sfide poste da un consumatore sempre più impaziente e dalle elevate aspettative di rapidità e convenienza; sostenibilità, da molti considerato tema determinante per sperare di conquistare le generazioni più giovani.

Il settore della pelle per automobile ha vissuto due grandi periodi di forza. Il primo ha avuto luogo al momento dell’invenzione delle prime automobili, col naturale passaggio del cuoio dalle carrozze trainate da cavalli a questi modernissimi veicoli. Da qui viene l’eccellente pellame “connolly”, nato per sopravvivere al fantastico ventesimo secolo, prima di perdersi in conseguenza di una serie di decisioni sconsiderate. altri famosi conciatori del settore, come eagle ottawa, si inserirono provenendo dal settore ferroviario. tutto andò bene fin quando le automobili non divennero chiuse, si dotarono di riscaldamento e altre comodità, e iniziarono a sostituire i mezzi pubblici come sistema pratico di trasporto. l’automobile si fece democratica, e il tessuto si impose come materiale preferito per i sedili. Il secondo periodo memorabile parte dagli anni ‘70. l’improvviso aumento del prezzo del petrolio rese tutte le automobili simili a frecce aerodinamiche. la differenza la si poteva ottenere solo tramite il miglioramento degli interni, e si trovò che la pelle era ciò che i consumatori percepivano come un reale valore aggiunto. Questa storia d’amore con la pelle si sviluppò molto rapidamente, trascinando nel settore numerosi nuovi operatori, e crebbe in breve tempo grazie all’utilizzo del branding per estendere la definizione di lusso in aree completamente nuove. In un classico esempio di distribuzione eccessiva, gli interni in pelle hanno accompagnato le automobili nelle nuove classi medie cinesi, fino a livelli di veicolo ben al di sotto di una qualsiasi possibile classificazione del lusso. In accordo con le leggi del marketing, questa vendita eccessiva e il conseguente prezzo fortemente competitivo spinsero la pelle per automobile – seguendo da vicino il precedente calo della pelle per arredamento – nel rischioso mondo delle merci, delle commodities. ciò stimolò anche un deciso miglioramento dei nuovi materiali sintetici, per farli rassomigliare più possibile alla pelle. Queste materie plastiche crearono in seguito nuovi problemi alle pelli, riuscendo a spacciarsi come tali nella maggior parte dei paesi in cui normative deboli e applicate alla leggera facevano sì che i consumatori potessero al più sperare nell’onestà e correttezza dei produttori. In un settore in cui i vegani e i diritti degli animali contribuiscono attivamente alla confusione del consumatore per ostacolare la vendita della pelle, le speranze di onestà e correttezza sono ridotte al minimo.

“Questa è pelle, pelle sintetica” all’inizio del 2019 abbiamo assistito in europa al raggiungimento di un nuovo livello di questo fenomeno, con alcune marche di automobili che hanno iniziato a vendere intenzionalmente plastica come se fosse pelle. un collega, in olanda, acquistò un’auto elettrica e ordinò l’allestimento dei sedili in pelle e tessuto, come

the automotive leather sector has had two big periods of strength. the first came when automobiles were first invented and there was a natural move of leather from horse drawn coaches to these newfangled vehicles. hence the great “connolly” leather was born to live through a fabulous twentieth century before being lost after a series of careless decisions. other famous tanners in the segment, like eagle ottawa, slipped over from the railroad sector. all did well until cars became enclosed, heaters and other comforts were introduced and they started to take over from public transport as the convenient mode of travel. the automobile was democratised and textiles became the seating material of choice. the second great period has been since the 1970s. the sudden surge in oil prices turned all automobiles into look-alike aerodynamic darts. Differentiation could only come by improving the interior and leather was found to be the one thing that consumers felt truly added value. this love affair with leather grew very fast, pulled in a lot of new entrants to the sector and grew rapidly as branding was used to expand the definition of luxury into whole new areas. In a classic example of over distribution leather interiors followed the automobile to the new chinese middle classes even into levels of vehicles well below any possible luxury classification. true to the laws of marketing this overselling and associated highly competitive pricing pushed automotive leather, tracking closely the previous decline of furniture leather, into the risky realm of a commodity. It also attracted new much improved synthetics aiming to look as close to leather as possible. these plastics then created new problems for leather by successfully passing themselves off as leather in the majority of countries where weak regulation and light enforcement mean that the best consumers can hope for is honesty

and integrity from manufacturers. In a sector where animal rights and vegans actively support consumer confusion to disrupt the sale of leather there is little hope of either honesty or integrity.

“This is leather, synthetic leather” early in 2019 we saw all this taken to a new level in europe when some car brands started to deliberately sell plastic as leather. one colleague, in the netherlands, bought an electric car and ordered a leather+textile seating arrangement as the best on offer environmentally. the “leather” turned out to be plastic. he told us “I asked the sales guy, why he puts in plastic while I ordered leather. no sir, we did how you ordered, this is leather, synthetic leather. When I explained him about the difference and that it is illegal in some countries to talk about synthetic leather, he had no clue what I was talking about.”

In the u.K. autocar magazine reported on a customer buying a Kia with full leather upholstery only to find it was all synthetic, who then faced a salesperson arguing that there was no difference and the car had to be accepted. as these became public we have been made aware of many more such abuses and in some instances sales staff admitted being instructed to tell customers that alternates such as non-wovens or plastic coated textiles were suede and leather. this deliberately dishonest marketing comes at a bad time for the automobile leather sector. sales of cars have slipped down in almost every region of the world and future prospects are harder to forecast as advancing urbanisation with increased use of public transport and cycling, a renting generation and autonomous vehicle technology all coincide. not to overlook the wide repercussions of the trade war between the us and china and the upset to the market caused by the diesel scandal. this follows the footwear leather segment where tanners sat back expecting the usual recovery in market share as hide prices fell, only to realise that knitted uppers and plastics work more easily with robots and automation, while some shoemakers were not prepared to spend more time training highly mobile staff in cutting leather. the garment leather business has gone even further down, with tales of skins being quietly disposed of or being sent for rendering coming from new Zealand as far back as last august.

Where, you may ask, has the marketing been to stop this happening? the answer is that it is about to happen – all being well. It has not happened over the last two decades not for the want of trying, but because of a mix of unhealthy complacency saying “my leather sells itself” and misunderstandings about the purpose and role of marketing.

Keeping your leather moving in the marketplace, correctly positioned, relevant and up to date is the role of marketing. It does not come at zero cost, or via a late rush into social media with a smart phone. leather markets have always constantly evolved. sheepskins were once nearly all used for parchment, and until a hundred years ago no leather at all went into automobiles as the sector did not exist.

It is time to put away personal, company, and even some aspects of national pride and subordinate them a little while a unified global leather story gets told to our younger generations. the positive, cool, leather story needs to be told.

Quando gli spiegai la differenza, aggiungendo che in alcuni paesi è illegale utilizzare il termine pelle sintetica, non aveva idea di cosa stessi parlando”. la rivista britannica autocar riferì di un cliente che aveva acquistato una Kia con rivestimenti completi in pelle, per scoprire che era tutto materiale sintetico, dovendo poi affrontare un venditore che sosteneva non vi fosse differenza, e che l’automobile avrebbe dovuto essere accettata. man mano che queste vicende sono divenute pubbliche, siamo venuti a conoscenza di un numero molto maggiore di abusi, e in alcuni casi il personale di vendita ha ammesso di essere stato istruito ad affermare che materiali alternativi come non-tessuti o tessuti rivestiti di plastica erano pelle scamosciata e cuoio.

Questo marketing deliberatamente disonesto arriva in un brutto momento per il settore della pelle per automobile. le vendite di automobili sono calate in quasi tutte le regioni del mondo, e le prospettive future sono difficili da prevedere, dato che l’urbanizzazione in crescita - con conseguente maggior utilizzo di mezzi pubblici e biciclette, una generazione orientata al noleggio e le tecnologie per veicoli autonomi sono tutte concomitanti. e non bisogna sottovalutare le pesanti ripercussioni della guerra commerciale tra usa e cina, e il turbamento dei mercati causato dallo scandalo del diesel. ciò avviene successivamente al settore della pelle per calzature, dove i conciatori si sono seduti ad attendere il solito recupero della quota di mercato al momento della caduta dei prezzi delle pelli pesanti, per rendersi poi conto che le tomaie in tessuto e materie plastiche funzionavano meglio con robot e automazione. Il settore della pelle per abbigliamento è calato in modo ancor più marcato, con voci provenienti dalla nuova Zelanda di pelli smaltite in discarica in gran silenzio o spedite per la distruzione, voci risalenti nientemeno che allo scorso agosto. ci si potrebbe chiedere dove si trovava il marketing per evitare che ciò accadesse. la risposta è che sta per accadere – se tutto va bene. non è accaduto durante gli ultimi vent’anni non per mancanza di volontà, ma a causa di un misto tra un insano autocompiacimento del tipo “la mia pelle si vende da sola”, e di malintesi sugli obiettivi e i ruoli del marketing. tenere il proprio pellame in movimento sul mercato, posizionarlo in modo corretto, fornirlo di adeguata importanza e mantenerlo aggiornato: questo è il ruolo del marketing. ciò non si ottiene a costo zero, o con una corsa tardiva sui social media tramite uno smartphone. I mercati della pelle sono sempre stati in costante evoluzione. le pelli di pecora venivano un tempo utilizzate quasi esclusivamente per la pergamena, e fino a cento anni fa nessuna pelle veniva impiegata nelle automobili, non esistendo ancora il settore. e’ giunta l’ora di mettere da parte gli orgogli personali, aziendali e sotto alcuni aspetti anche nazionali, e lasciarli un po’ in secondo piano fin quando non si riuscirà a raccontare alle giovani generazioni una storia globalmente uniforme sulla pelle. la storia positiva e fantastica sulla pelle deve essere raccontata.

The fair opens on Wednesday 20 february To presenT skins, maTerials and componenTs for summer 2020 After Lineapelle London and Lineapelle New York, the recent exhibition events that have also given space to debates about topical issues such as customisation, biomanufacturing, functionalised materials and circular fashion, it is now the turn of the most important appointment, that of Milan, from the 20th to 22nd February. With exhibitors from 40 countries and numbers in line with the past editions, Lineapelle no. 96 gives way with a renewed fashion matrix, starting at the same time as fashion shows of Milano Moda Donna, and the setting up of routes and new thematic exhibition spaces that will give practical expression to chromatic renderings and conceptual reference of the summer season 2020.

From a stylistic point of view, during the seminars organised by the Lineapelle Fashion Committee, will be presented summer trends for 2020, summarised by the concept of Co-Natural which identifies “a distinction between human and machine that is increasingly less visible. Everything merges into a symbiotic relationship that no longer opposes man and technology.

From this awareness of being at the centre of a technological, but above all mental, revolution comes a new design philosophy applicable also to the substance and therefore to aesthetics.

Thinking Co-Natural, hence, means dealing with important issues such as sustainability of work and ethics of traceability, it means becoming aware of the complexity and mobility of the contemporary world”.

Sul fronte congiunturale, la manifestazione cercherà di fare luce in “un momento di mercato complesso e opaco, che richiede particolare attenzione nel trovare soluzioni innovative di prodotto e servizio” come riferisce l’organizzazione fieristica che fa capo all’industria conciaria italiana.

We ask about the market situation while traveling to the airport to fly to New York and to the edition of Lineapelle on American soil: “This standstill is valid both for the tannery world as for accessories and components. The footwear world is the one suffering always more, while leather goods are still stable. The slowdown in China, Russia that does not restart and not very brilliant US performances continue to cast shadows on the sector”.

In these cases, big brands are usually those to provide some signs of optimism, but it seems that at this point even big brands are at a standstill: “They too live in a pending situation. Among other things, many creators are changing at the head of the style offices and, consequently, also requests submitted to companies. It is therefore a further difficult element for the world of supply”.

There does not seem to be room for optimism... “But we are positive. Especially after the London event, which went

In casi simili, di solito, sono i grandi brand a fornire qualche segnale di ottimismo, ma pare che in questo frangente anche le griffe siano ferme al palo: “Anche loro vivono una situazione di attesa. Fra l’altro stanno cambiando molti creativi a capo degli uffici stile e, di conseguenza, le richieste sottoposte alle aziende.

Un ulteriore elemento di difficoltà, quindi, per il mondo della fornitura”.

Non sembra esserci spazio per l’ottimismo… “Noi, però, siamo positivi. Soprattutto dopo l’evento di Londra, andato molto bene, e le cifre di Lineapelle Milano dove il numero di espositori rimane invariato. Non ci aspettiamo un’inversione di tendenza del mercato durante Lineapelle, ma noi continuiamo a lavorare perché rimanga la piattaforma di business centrale per il settore. Nella prossima edizione, infatti, daremo maggior evidenza e spazio all’area moda: il Fashion Theatre è stato completamente rivisitato e trova nuova collocazione accanto all’area trend principale, all’ingresso del padiglione 13”.

The topics proposed by researchers all over the world are the most varied, from basic research on leather collagen passing through all stages of the tanning process, being always analysed under the lens of environmental sustainability: cleaner technologies, reuse of tannery waste, resource-efficient manufacturing processes and so on. The theme of sustainability has been taken care of right from the beginning by the hosts - the association of the German leather tanning chemists VGCT and the CMD agency, also with regards to the Congress management itself and concerns all the organisational aspects: mobility and traffic, location and reception, hotel services, food catering, waste management and reduction, etc. in order to minimise the environmental impact of the Congress itself. Il Comitato Scientifico del Congresso IULTCS informa di aver ricevuto quasi 200 proposte di relazioni tecnico-scientifiche da vagliare e selezionare in vista del grande evento internazionale in programma dal 25 al 28 giugno prossimi. Gli argomenti proposti a glimpse of dresden dai ricercatori di tutto il mondo uno scorcio di dresda sono i più svariati, dalla ricerca di base sul collagene della pelle passando per tutte le fasi del processo produttivo, sempre analizzati sotto la lente della sostenibilità ambientale: tecnologie più pulite, riutilizzo di scarti di conceria, processi di lavorazione a basso consumo di risorse e via di seguito. Il tema della sostenibilità è stato preso in carico sin dall’inizio dai padroni di casa – l’associazione dei chimici della pelle tedeschi VGCT e l’agenzia CMD, anche per quanto riguarda la gestione del Congresso stesso e riguardano tutti gli aspetti organizzativi: mobilità e traffico, location e accoglienza, servizi alberghieri, food catering, gestione e riduzione dei rifiuti, etc. allo scopo di ridurre al minimo l’impatto ambientale del Congresso stesso. A partire dalla scelta della sede, l’International Congress Centre di Dresda (ICCD), un edificio di prim’ordine da questo punto di vista, dotato di attrezzature tecniche eccellenti, e gestito dal Maritim Hotels Group già impegnato in un’iniziativa per implementare la sostenibilità nel settore dell’accoglienza. Il Congresso inizierà nel tardo pomeriggio di martedì 25 con una Opening Ceremony ufficiale prevista presso il Centro Congressi. La Dresden’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, composta da 50 giovani musicisti, darà il via all’evento suonando la Water Music di Haendel e farà da accompagnamento ai discorsi di benvenuto del presidente IULTCS e delle autorità locali. A seguire la IULTCS Merit Award ceremony e la presentazione dei vincitori della Young Scientist Grants 2019.

On the occasion of Pitti Uomo, last January 9th in Florence the Associazione Conciatori of Santa Croce organised “Emotion Leather”, an evening-event that saw the wonderful D’Arme room, in Palazzo Vecchio, full of guests. From the title chosen to introduce the event to its final stages, it was all a succession of emotions, with guests in the stalls area surprised by the story of the tanning district, starting with a brilliant monologue by the dramatist Stefano Massini, through interviews and the talk show with the protagonists of the territory. Among the interventions, the President of the Tuscany Region, Enrico Rossi, underlined the exceptional nature of the tanning district which has become a circular economy model and the importance of sharing common strategies between public and private sectors, while the mayor of Santa Croce, Giulia Deidda, recalled the uniqueness of the industrial infrastructure of the local tanning district. since last autumn marco frediani (klf tecnokimica) is the new chairman of unpac, the italian association of manufacturers of tanningchemical auxiliaries, taking over from edgardo stefani who has guided him over the past six years. known and appreciated by everyone in the sector, the tuscan entrepreneur anticipates to arsutoria tannery programs and objectives of his mandate at the lead of unpac.

What goals have you set for the next two years? “we are working on various fronts. first of all, the Board of directors that i honour to preside is committed to carrying out the work set by the previous one, pursuing the sharing of objectives with other supply chain associations and with

Quali obiettivi vi siete dati per i prossimi due anni? “stiamo lavorando su vari fronti. per prima cosa il consiglio direttivo che mi onoro presiedere è impegnato nel portare avanti il lavoro impostato da quello precedente, perseguendo la condivisione degli obiettivi con le altre associazioni di filiera e con gli enti che sono naturalmente e storicamente di supporto tecnico e scientifico alla conceria e alle ditte di prodotti chimici. puntiamo

bodies that naturally and historically are a technical and scientific support to the tannery and to chemical companies. we specifically aim to be even closer to the demands of the tanners, involving them even more in our associative activities, in order to interpret actual needs related to the demands of the final destination market. to facilitate this relationship, we plan to include a technical figure in the staff, who will become the natural interface with the tanner, with the aim of developing an operating system project that will allow us to compare and define tools in order to design and produce increasingly sustainable articles. thanks to this strategy we are able to aggregate more companies to unpac, to be able to make critical mass and share a common position to address objectives. i also would like to point out that since last december we have been present in Zdhc’s “chemical industry advisory group”, foundation of which we have been contributor since 2018, a technical group formed by experts in tanning chemistry, which will define procedures and methodologies for chemical tests. last but not least, we have been invited to participate in the unece/oecd international supply chain table to evaluate the traceability and sustainability of the footwear leather supply chain”.

W h a t a re t h e m o s t u r g e n t challenges or issues that UNPAC has to face today? “more than challenges or issues, which are now the daily life of the leather industry, i would like to talk about development, which means our future and i not only mean that of chemical companies, but also of tanneries, to which we are closely tied because italian chemical tanning companies are essen-

tially mono-sector and thanks to this specificity they have succeeded in developing such high-performance application technologies. in this scenario, unpac plays a fundamental role in supporting the members to address common issues in respect of laws and regulations, which require capillary and specific product controls through analysis and documentary checks, so as to make them compliant with the regulations in force.

But the development to achieve and improve the objectives of these services also depends on the collaboration that we, as an association, will be able to establish even more strongly and clearly than what we have already been able to achieve up to now with other supply chain associations. i refer to unic, assomac, the association of santa croce sull’arno tanners and consortium of ponte a egola, district veneto, industrial association vicenza section tanning and especially with the italian leather research institute of naples, without forgetting aicc”.

Of the many activities in progress, which are the themes that you hold closest to heart? “as i mentioned earlier, i think it is absolutely necessary to develop a system operating project, because in my opinion within the supply chain we need to share the harmonisation of desired standards, in line with the consistently reachable limits set for the substances contained in the formulations at a reasoned and reasonable level. the goal is to define a joint protocol aimed at elaborating issues that are affecting the leather supply chain, involving chemists, tanners, manufacturers, laboratories. the goal should be to create a single language model, with uniform termi-

nello specifico ad essere ancora più vicini alle richieste dei conciatori, coinvolgendoli maggiormente anche nelle nostre attività associative. per agevolare questo rapporto contiamo di inserire in organico una figura tecnica, che diventerà la naturale interfaccia con il conciatore, con l’obiettivo di sviluppare un progetto operativo di sistema che permetterà di confrontarsi e definire gli strumenti atti a progettare e realizzare articoli sempre più sostenibili. È grazie a questa strategia che stiamo aggregando ad unpac un maggior numero di aziende, per riuscire a fare massa critica e condividere una posizione comune di indirizzo degli obiettivi. mi preme anche puntualizzare che dal dicembre scorso siamo presenti nel “chemical industry advisory group” di Zdhc, fondazione della quale siamo contributor dal 2018, gruppo tecnico formato da esperti di chimica conciaria, che si occuperà di definire le procedure e le metodologie per i test dei prodotti chimici. da ultimo, ma non ultimo, siamo stati chiamati a partecipare al tavolo di filiera internazionale di unece/ocse per valutare la tracciabilità e sostenibilità della filiera pelle calzature”.

Quali sono le sfide o i problemi più urgenti che UNPAC deve affrontare oggi? “più che di sfide o problemi, che ormai sono la quotidianità della filiera pelle, gradirei parlare di sviluppo, che sta a significare il nostro futuro, e intendo non solo quello delle aziende chimiche, ma anche delle concerie, con le quali siamo legati a doppio filo. in questo scenario unpac gioca un ruolo fondamentale di supporto agli associati per affrontare i temi comuni in rispetto a leggi e regolamenti, che impongono un controllo capillare e specifico dei prodotti attraverso analisi e controlli documentali, così da renderli conformi ai regolamenti vigenti. ma lo sviluppo per raggiungere e migliorare gli obbiettivi di questi servizi passa anche dalla collaborazione che riusciremo, come associazione, a stabilire in maniera ancora più forte ed evidente con le altre associazioni di filiera. mi riferisco ad unic, assomac, associazione conciatori di santa croce sull’arno e consorzio conciatori di ponte a egola, distretto veneto, associazione industriali vicenza sezione concia, e soprattutto con la stazione sperimentale di napoli, senza dimenticare aicc”.

Delle tante attività in corso, quali sono i temi che più le stanno più a cuore? “ritengo assolutamente necessario lo sviluppo di un progetto operativo di sistema, come accennavo prima, in quanto penso che all’interno della filiera occorra condividere un’armonizzazione degli standard desiderati, in linea con i limiti fissati per le sostanze contenute nei formulati ad un livello ragionato e ragionevole, coerentemente raggiungibili. l’obiettivo è quello di definire un protocollo congiunto che elabori le tematiche che si stanno ripercuotendo sulla filiera pelle, coinvolgendo chimici, conciatori, manifatturieri, laboratori. occorre darsi l’obiettivo di realizzare un unico modello di linguaggio, con uniformità di terminologia, condiviso da tutte le forze di filiera, e quindi armonizzare i vari indirizzi di applicazione per garantire la completa interattività, con lo scopo di una diffusione capillare delle infor-

nology, shared by all supply chain forces, and to therefore harmonise various application addresses to ensure complete interactivity, with the aim of a widespread disclosure of information and results. it would be desirable to arrive at the definition of a single specific supply chain mrsl, realised in view of the excessive fragmentation of the requests contained in a plurality of specifications. the association has, of course, already started in recent years to establish increasingly frequent strategic contacts, by planning work projects to be carried out with subjects that can be substantial for these purposes, the italian leather research institute and poteco in the first place. our next objectives are to develop methods for the analysis of chemical products and without the experience and knowledge contribution of the managers of these laboratories, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results by ourselves. i would like to highlight the strategic work for the development of analysis method of leather chemicals, structured within the italian and international standardisation tables, thanks to the creation of the group of chemical products, which we wanted and coordinated, and a synergistic work with unic and an interlaboratory network”.

What role does the Prossimapelle trade show play in this context? “prossimapelle is our showcase that combines chemistry, fashion, technology and sustainability; besides being a trendy event is also a moment of technical comparison, a moment in which all the news, but above all, all the technical updates on the base of increasingly more structured chemical products according to the regulatory requirements, will be presented and used in the proposed articles, products

with a “green” label, that is, with high-yield chemical characteristics, which have undergone an analytical control procedure and that comply with all regulatory requirements, products that therefore comply with a shared mrsl in the supply chain”.

What is the state of health of the sector today and what are the prospects? “unf o r t u na t e ly, t he e c onomic situation is not the most favourable, markets are shrinking, there is tension over raw materials prices and consumption has been reduced. even the automotive sector, which had grown considerably in the consumption of leather for interiors in the last three years, suffered a marked slowdown. in this scenario costs with regards to raw materials, energy, gas, transport, product analysis for compliance requests, reach registrations, labour costs have increased but our companies managed to hold positions on the markets, certainly for the quantities of auxiliaries sold, even if margins have significantly decreased. nevertheless the perseverance of our associates in developing products and solutions, supplying an application service that makes the difference, allows chemical companies to maintain positions on international markets”.

Will UNPAC be present at Tanning Tech 2019? “certainly, this year unpac will be present at tanning tech confirming the close relationship that our association has of course with assomac, since we share the same clientele and the same markets. in this edition we will occupy an area of 1,200 square metres to confirm the massive presence of unpac companies at the milan event. on the occasion, many innovations will be presented that will give tanners an important competitive advantage”.

mazioni e dei risultati. sarebbe auspicabile arrivare alla definizione di un’unica mrsl specifica di filiera, realizzata a fronte dell’eccessiva frammentazione delle richieste contenute in una pluralità di capitolati. i nostri prossimi obbiettivi sono quelli di elaborare metodi per le analisi dei prodotti chimici, e senza l’apporto di esperienza e conoscenza dei responsabili di questi laboratori, sarà difficile da soli poter raggiungere i risultati voluti. mi preme mettere in risalto il lavoro strategico improntato per lo sviluppo dei metodi di analisi dei prodotti chimici per cuoio, strutturato all’interno dei tavoli di normazione italiano ed internazionali, grazie alla costituzione del gruppo lavoro prodotti chimici, da noi voluto e coordinato, con un lavoro sinergico con unic ed una rete interlaboratori”.

Quale ruolo gioca in questo quadro l’evento fieristico Prossimapelle? “prossimapelle è la nostra vetrina che coniuga chimica, moda, tecnologia, sostenibilità; oltre ad essere un evento di tendenza è anche un momento di confronto tecnico, un momento in cui tutte le novità, ma soprattutto tutti gli aggiornamenti tecnici sulla base di prodotti chimici sempre più strutturati in funzione delle richieste normative, saranno presentati e utilizzati negli articoli proposti, prodotti con bollino “verde”, cioè con caratteristiche chimiche di alto rendimento, che hanno passato un iter di controllo analitico e che rispettano tutte le richieste normative, prodotti quindi che si conformino ad una mrsl condivisa nella filiera”.

Qual è lo stato di salute del settore oggi e quali le prospettive? “purtroppo la congiuntura non è delle più favorevoli, i mercati sono in contrazione, i prezzi delle materie prime sono in tensione, i consumi si sono ridotti. anche l’automotive, che era cresciuta considerevolmente nei consumi di pelle per interni nell’ultimo triennio, ha subito un rallentamento marcato. in questo scenario i costi sono aumentati per quanto riguarda le materie prime, energia, gas, trasporti, analisi sui prodotti per richieste di conformità, registrazioni reach, costo del lavoro ma le nostre aziende hanno tenuto le posizioni sui mercati, sicuramente per le quantità di ausiliari venduti, anche se le marginalità si sono ridotte in modo significativo. ciononostante la perseveranza dei nostri associati nello sviluppare prodotti e soluzioni, fornendo un servizio applicativo che fa la differenza, permette alle aziende chimiche di mantenere le posizioni sui mercati internazionali”.

UNPAC sarà presente a Tanning Tech 2019? “certamente, anche quest’anno unpac sarà presente a tanning tech a conferma del rapporto stretto che la nostra associazione ha naturalmente con assomac, dal momento che condividiamo la stessa clientela e gli stessi mercati. in quest’edizione occuperemo un’area di 1.200 mq a confermare la presenza massiccia delle aziende unpac all’evento milanese.

The timing for the start-up of the campaign is linked to the current fundraising trend. “We have been able to raise funds to finance a large part of the campaign but to reach the necessary amount of USD 1.5 million we need to find new supporters”, explains the president of LN, Egbert Dikkers. “We presented the project to many companies and associations in the sector, receiving very positive feedbacks”, adds Fernando Bellese, member of the Management Board, actively involved in the development of the marketing project. Leather Naturally is supported by tanneries from all over the world (including Bader, Prime Asia, Wollsdorf, Wolverine Leathers, JBS Couros, etc.), by all the chemistry multinationals and other important producers of tanning chemical auxiliaries, as well as by international rawhide

I tempi per l’avviamento della campagna sono legati all’andamento della raccolta fondi attualmente in corso.

“Siamo riusciti a raccogliere fondi per finanziare buona parte della campagna ma per raggiungere la cifra necessaria di 1,5 milioni di USD occorre trovare nuovi sostenitori” spiega il presidente di LN, Egbert Dikkers. “Abbiamo presentato il progetto a molte compagnie e associazioni del settore ricevendo riscontri molto positivi” aggiunge Fernando Bellese, membro del consiglio direttivo, fattivamente impegnato nell’elaborazione del progetto di marketing.

Since its creation LN has always defended our sector from attacks by various NGOs (environmentalists, animal rights activists, etc.) and from the unfair competition of synthetic materials that imitate our wonderful natural product.

But now it is time to press the accelerator and take action: over time the group has expanded thanks to the passion of many operators in the sector and has devised ambitious projects to continue to pursue the initial objectives in a more global and incisive form. Absolutely convinced about the goodness of the initiative is also Francesco Lapi, number one of the chemical department of Lapi Group who joined LN through FGL International of Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa), a known manufacturer of chemical auxiliaries: “Real leather is facing major attacks from all over the world - says Lapi - on the one hand there is a strong competition that tries to replace it by promoting the use of synthetic materials, on the other, associations that are carrying out increasingly strong denigration campaigns against leather for the welfare of animals. We have decided, like FGL International, to collaborate with Leather Naturally and all its members because it is absolutely necessary, in order to counter these attacks, that there is an organised system able to inform the final consumer which are the positive aspects by using leather.

Everyone must be aware of the fact that properly produced leather is a truly sustainable material”. Claudio Bortolati of the GSC Group of Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza), specialised in the production of chemical auxiliaries for all types of leather, shares the same opinion.

“Our sector has been under media attack for too long, often with fake news and almost always not corresponding to the reality leading the consumer to neglect if not abandon leather products. In this context the LN program is exactly what it takes to reverse the situation and bring the ‘real leather’ and the whole supply chain to the right consideration. I therefore hope that all components of the tanning sector will adhere to this project” concludes Bortolati.

Dello stesso avviso Claudio Bortolati di GSC Group di Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza), specializzato nella produzione di ausiliari chimici per tutti i tipi di pellame.

“Il nostro comparto è sotto attacco mediatico da troppo tempo, spesso con notizie false e quasi sempre non corrispondenti alla realtà che portano il consumatore a trascurare se non abbandonare i prodotti in pelle. In questo contesto il programma di LN è esattamente quello che serve per ribaltare la situazione e riportare la ‘vera pelle’ e tutta la filiera alla giusta considerazione. Spero quindi che tutti i componenti del comparto conciario aderiscano a questo progetto” conclude Bortolati. Tra i sostenitori di LN figura anche Lamipel, uno dei più importanti trader di materia prima per il settore conciario, capogruppo dell’International Leather Split Group, che conta 13 aziende localizzate in tutte le principali aree conciarie del mondo. “E’ parte del nostro lavoro di ogni giorno promuovere e diffondere la conoscenza sulla pelle, spiegando e facendo scoprire ai nostri clienti pregi e difetti che ogni pelle, in funzione dell’origine e della scelta, porta con sé - ci spiega il responsabile Jacopo Pieraccioni - In questo senso, Leather Naturally può espandere la diffusione di tale conoscenza al di fuori dei confini del settore conciario in cui noi viviamo ogni giorno e raggiungere il consumatore globale, in particolare attraverso il canale digitale che oggi influenza e, sempre di più, guida il consumatore all’acquisto. Segnatamente dalle associazioni che fanno parte del GLCC, ovvero il gruppo di lavoro che riunisce l’International Council of Tanners (ICT), l’International Council of Hides, Skins and leather traders Association (ICHSLTA) e l’International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) che ha pubblicato un comunicato di sostegno all’iniziativa incoraggiando i propri membri a supportare LN.

In the last couple of months LN has also been supported by various international organisations that bring together tanneries and tannery chemists from all over the world. In particular, associations that are part of the GLCC, the working group that brings together the International Council of Tanners (ICT), the International Council of Hides, the Skins and Leather Traders Association (ICHSLTA) and the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) who published a press release supporting the initiative by encouraging its members to support LN.

Everything is ready for Simac Tanning Tech, the international fair of machines and technologies for the footwear, leather goods and tanning industries, which opens its doors on Wednesday 20 February at Fiera Milano Rho and ends on Friday 22. An absolutely unmissable world showcase that hosts about 19,000 net square metres, over 300 exhibitors including the most important international players in the sector. Also this year the tanning technology exhibition is focused on issues related to energy-environmental issues.

As you will also see in the anticipations of the novelties on display that we propose in the following pages, exhibiting companies have worked to launch innovative solutions where parameters of efficiency and reduction of the environmental impact are at the centre of the technological offer. “Performing, safe and environmentally friendly technologies - reports Gabriella Marchioni Bocca, president of Simac Tanning Tech -, is a path that companies of our sector have already taken a few years ago and on which

Anche quest’anno il salone della tecnologia conciaria è focalizzato sulle problematiche relative alle questioni energeticoambientali. This year at the fair in Milan Gemata presents two brand new machines that collect and embody a 40 year experience in the leather finishing field. The new spraystar-Evo spraying booth fulfills innovations required by the modern market for this type of equipment implementing solutions as overpressing the spray chamber, ionizing the atomization air and chicken wire transport to ensure absence of contamination.

It also introduces a new electronic control solutions for efficiency abatement that aim at greater respect for the environment while keeping low maintenance and operating costs through automated devices for guns cleaning and color change.

La nuova cabina di spruzzatura spraystar-Evo realizza in soluzioni tecnologiche tutte le innovazioni richieste dal mercato moderno per questo tipo di equipaggiamento attuando soluzioni di sovrappressione della camera di spruzzatura, ionizzazione dell’aria di atomizzazione, trasporto chicken wire per garantire assenza di contaminazione.

Presenta inoltre nuove soluzioni di controllo elettronico dell’efficienza di abbattimento che puntano ad un maggiore rispetto per l’ambiente pur mantenendo bassi i costi di manutenzione e di esercizio grazie a dispositivi automatizzati di lavaggio pistole e cambio colore. Gemata presenta poi l’innovativa macchina a rullo modello starface, spalmando la pelle dal lato carne, permette l’inserimento in linea di questa lavorazione, essenziale nel settore automotive. L’evoluzione tecnologica apportata dalla starface diminuisce drasticamente la contaminazione proveniente dal lato inferiore delle pelli, causa principale della difettosità riscontrabile su una pelle finita per automotive. Rappresenta quindi una innovazione che, aumentando sia superficie che resa in taglio delle pelli, è imprescindibile per le concerie che vogliono guardare al futuro puntando su qualità del prodotto ed efficienza di processo.

efficiency and savings with the new booth Quality, productivity and reproducibility are key points of the technological development of the new rotary booth designed by Barnini: the result of indepth studies on the control of air flows inside the cabin and on savings of the chemical product, water and energy. “This new project - explains the sales manager Matteo simoni - has matured through a synergy of skills, starting from 50 years of knowhow in the construction of spraying systems combined with the experience and knowledge of customer use. all this has shown us the right path to turn a dream into reality”.

The new ROT-s rotary booth is on show at Tanning Tech 2019 in the 3400 model (1.41) and is fitted with the system recommended by the company to customers to minimise the costs of the chemical product needed for the spraying phase. The impeller consists of the low pressure system for the precision air control up to 0.2 bar. The system is positioned on a carousel with 24 spray arms to minimise the speed of the guns allowing better coverage of the product sprayed on the skin and less

air turbulence inside the booth.

The new B_54 innovative guns mounted one for each arm, guarantee a high chemical transfer, a homogenous application and multiheads for effects or covers with nozzles in all sizes to apply from 2 to 20 grams to the square foot. The only limit is imagination.

MOSTARDINI, great advantages with SOLARIS as for the Mostardini Division, now presses can install the innovative solaris patented heating system that combines characteristics and advantages of electric heating and diathermic oil. Thanks to this new system, it is possible to reach operating temperatures in a shorter period of time, to maintain a uniform and constant temperature profile along the roller during processing, keeping the machine clean and in complete safety. solaris greatly reduces consumption, thermal losses and simplifies maintenance work as it does not use components of traditional heating systems (thermal control unit, rotary joints, distributors, connecting pipes, etc).

La nuova cabina rotativa ROT-s è in esposizione a Tanning Tech 2019 nel modello 3400 (1,41) ed è allestita con il sistema consigliato dalla casa madre ai clienti per ridurre al minimo i costi del prodotto chimico necessario per la fase di spruzzatura. La girante è completa del sistema a bassa pressione per il controllo di precisione dell’aria fino a 0,2 bar. Il sistema è posizionato su una giostra con 24 bracci portapistola per ridurre al minimo le velocità delle pistole permettendo una miglior copertura del prodotto spruzzato sulla pelle e minore turbolenze d’aria interne alla cabina. Le nuove pistole innovative B_54 montate una per ciascun braccio garantiscono un alto trasferimento del prodotto chimico, omogeneità di applicazione e multi-testine per effetti o coperture con ugelli in tutte le dimensioni per applicare da 2 a 20 grammi al piede quadro. L’unico limite è la fantasia.

MOSTARDINI, grandi vantaggi con SOLARIS Quanto alla Divisione Mostardini, ora le presse possono installare l’innovativo sistema di riscaldamento brevettato solaris che unisce le caratteristiche e i vantaggi del riscaldamento elettrico e con olio diatermico. In order to perform research on different ways to apply the film (type of guns, number of guns etc.), the production line should be modified accordingly.

The same issue exists when drying (tunnel length, type of heating, temperature curves etc.).

L’idea di base è che oggigiorno è necessaria una linea di produzione per realizzare campioni di pelle uguali al prodotto finito, ma non tutte le concerie dispongono di linee uguali fra loro, pertanto ogni campione deve essere creato impiegando proprio la linea di rifinizione che poi eseguirà la produzione. Per poter fare ricerche e sperimentazioni sui diversi modi di applicare il prodotto chimico (tipo e numero di pistole, etc.) va modificata di conseguenza anche la linea di produzione.

Lo stesso problema sussiste in fase di essiccazione (lunghezza del tunnel, tipo di riscaldamento, curve di temperatura, etc.)

the state of the art of antistatic beLts There are many news in Equitan, a small but dynamic Venetian company that sells in over fifty different countries. Its strength is the production of tannery equipment, parts and accessories (of machines) with a strong content of innovation, combined with over twenty years of market experience. among the most popular products we find conveyor belts, lifting platforms, extractors, markers, calibres for measuring leathers and many other indispensable tools for working in the tannery.

On the eve of the Milan fair, the owner antonio antoniazzi announced the innovations that will be presented at Tanning Tech 2019. first of all the new version of the antistatic elastic carpet for the staking machine “condutex”, the company’s workhorse, the subject of a patent awarded at the hong Kong fair last year and peculiar for its particular “biconic” structure that allows the conveyor to remain tighter in the central part, where it is shorter, preventing wrinkling and obtaining smoother and flat skins. “now we have managed to further improve the antistatic effect of the carpet thanks to the addition of a treatment based on a particular compound that, together with the carbon fibres we already used, maximises the result - says the businessman from Veneto-. a new achievement for leather embossing To emboss leather with a hydraulic press for a more precise definition of the design or to use a rotary press in order to increase productivity to the detriment of the final result? Very much simplifying the issue, since printing is actually a complex process connected to the variety of the products used and the technologies used, we can say that up to a short time ago tanners were called to choose between quality of printing and processing speed.

Evolution Tech seems to have solved the dilemma and nowadays it proposes a technological advancement of its rotary presses that, along with high productivity guarantees deep and precise printing of leather since it operates at temperatures and pressures lower than a traditional machine of this kind. The technology developed by the Veneto company is called Termotech. In brief, it is a patented heating system of the anti-crease belt applied to the rotary press to iron and emboss. “The Termotech system is able to pre-heat hides on both sides for approximately one meter at the desired temperature (up to a 110 degrees centigrade) before it comes into contact with the cylinder. Consequently thermoplastic finishing does not need a high temperature of the cylinder to have a high temperature, thus acquiring softness and printing depth” they explain at Evolution Tech, a young entrepreneurial entity that has presented the technical study (in particular of thermoplastic polymers used to print hides and their reaction to heat) that led to this innovation at the AICC conference in Arzignano last November. “Our clients have

also pointed out another important advantage: in tropical areas, where the extremely high humidity has often been a challenge during printing, because humidity is aggregated in more points and drops form that are then pressed on hides leaving indelible stains. Indeed, preheating hides enables humidity to evaporate completely and therefore it is impossible for drops to accumulate and to mark the hides”, they explain at Evolution Tech. Therefore, working at lower and prolonged temperatures, and at the same time safeguarding manufacturing speed, the rotary press equipped with Evolution Tech’s system makes it possible to obtain a more velvety touch during the ironing phase and to print finished hides more deeply, without cuts and with more marked reliefs.

Un nUovo tragUardo per la stampa Stampare le pelli con la pressa idraulica per una miglior definizione del disegno o impiegare una rotativa per aumentare la produttività a scapito del risultato finale?

Semplificando molto la questione, perché in realtà la stampa è un processo complesso legato alla varietà dei prodotti utilizzati e alle tecnologie impiegate, possiamo dire che fino a poco tempo il conciatore era chiamato a scegliere tra qualità di stampa e velocità di lavorazione.

Evolution Tech sembra aver risolto il dilemma e oggi propone un avanzamento tecnologico delle sue presse rotative che, insieme alla produttività elevata, garantisce una stampatura profonda e precisa della pelle, in quanto lavora a temperature e pressioni inferiori rispetto ad una macchina tradizionale di questo tipo. La tecnologia sviluppata dall’azienda veneta si chiama Thermotech. In estrema sintesi si tratta di un sistema brevettato di riscaldamento del tappeto stendipieghe applicato alla pressa rotativa a stirare e stampare. “Il sistema Thermotech è in grado di preriscaldare la pelle su entrambi i lati per circa un metro alla temperatura desiderata (fino a 110 gradi centigradi) prima che essa entri in contatto con il cilindro.

Di conseguenza la rifinizione termoplastica non necessita di un’elevata temperatura del cilindro, acquistando morbidezza e profondità di stampa” spiegano da Evolution Tech, giovane realtà imprenditoriale che ha presentato lo studio tecnico che ha portato a questa innovazione al convegno AICC di Arzignano lo scorso novembre. “I nostri clienti hanno segnalato anche un altro importante vantaggio: nelle zone tropicali, dove l’umidità elevata ha spesso rappresentato una sfida durante la stampa, poiché l’umidità si aggrega in più punti e si formano gocce che vengono poi pressate sulle pelli lasciando delle macchie indelebili. Il preriscaldamento delle pelli consente all’umidità di evaporare completamente e non c’è quindi alcuna possibilità che le gocce d’acqua si accumulino e segnino le pelli” concludono da Evolution Tech.

Lavorando dunque a temperature più basse e protratte, e salvaguardando al tempo stesso la velocità di produzione, la pressa rotativa dotata di sistema Thermotech di Evolution Tech consente di ottenere una mano più vellutata in fase di stiratura e di stampare le pelli rifinite in maniera più profonda, senza tagli e con rilievi più marcati.

An expanding company that is working on an important project to increase its

production plant. Mauro Bergozza, born in 1962, and currently head of the company together with his brothers Alberto and Federico, told us: “Finally, after years of waiting, we have succeeded in buying the land adjacent to the plant, and we will shortly start the construction of a new industrial building which, I hope within a year, will provide us with an additional 2,600 square meters to meet the growing production needs. Two of our production lines will be transferred to the new spaces, which will also contain the new administrative and commercial offices, as well as a test laboratory.

We will enlarge the warehouse in the old part and double the space dedicated to automation for the Bertech division,” continues Mauro Bergozza.

Un’impresa in espansione che sta lavorando ad un importante progetto di ampliamento dello stabilimento produttivo, come ci racconta Mauro Bergozza, classe 1962, oggi al timone della società affiancato dai fratelli Alberto e Federico: “Finalmente, dopo anni di attesa, siamo riusciti ad acquistare un terreno adiacente allo stabilimento; a breve partiranno i lavori di costruzione del nuovo capannone che, spero nel giro di un anno, ci metterà a disposizione circa 2.600 metri quadri aggiuntivi di cui abbiamo davvero bisogno per soddisfare le crescenti esigenze produttive.

Nei nuovi spazi sposteremo due linee di produzione e disporremo di una palazzina nuova per gli uffici amministrativi e commerciali, oltre ad un laboratorio prove.

Nella parte vecchia potenzieremo invece il magazzino e raddoppieremo lo spazio dedicato all’automazione per la sezione Bertech” riferisce Mauro Bergozza.

The founder of the company, your father Giovanni, a highly respected entrepreneur in the sector, passed away last year. What is the most important thing he taught you?

“My father taught me so many things, starting from the importance of humility, but if I have to mention just one thing, I would say respect: not only towards customers, obviously, but also towards employees because without human resources, a company is just an empty box.

A company is only as good as the people who work there.”

Il 2018 si avvia alla conclusione, quali sono le aspettative per il nuovo anno?

“A livello di fatturato il 2018 è risultato in linea con il 2017, che era stato molto positivo, ma in realtà l’utile quest’anno è sensibilmente diminuito a causa dei tanti aumenti che abbiamo subìto, in particolare sulle materie prime. rispetto ai mercati, l’Italia è cresciuta molto grazie agli incentivi sugli investimenti del piano Industria 4.0 e ha permesso di sopperire al calo di mercati importanti quali la cina e la Turchia. riguardo al prossimo futuro, noi imprenditori siamo tutti alla finestra: al momento assistiamo ad una fase di stallo con la preoccupazione che il settore automobilistico abbia terminato la sua spinta propulsiva e che la guerra dei dazi fra stati Uniti e cina causi gravi ripercussioni sul commercio globale. speriamo tutti che questa incertezza si dissolva rapidamente e che non sia invece il principio di una nuova crisi”.

Progetti futuri?

“Una volta completato l’ampliamento dello stabilimento, potremmo sviluppare meglio il settore dedicato alla finta pelle e al tessile e magari diversificare la produzione anche in altri settori”.

Il fondatore dell’azienda, suo padre Giovanni, imprenditore molto apprezzato nel settore, è scomparso l’anno scorso. Qual è l’insegnamento più importante che le ha lasciato?

A new line of AntioxidAnt products deriving from olive mill wAstewAter for A metAl-free process Dermochimica has launched Hydroil, a new line of products for the tanning and retanning process based on recovery waters coming from the production of olive oil.

The new system, the object of two patent applications, does not use metals but allows to obtain leathers with high-level characteristics and performance comparable to chrome tanning. Hydroil can be used as a chromium (VI) inhibitor in the retanning phase or in the whole process to tan in total absence of chromium. The tanning process turned out to be valid on leathers intended for all production segments, from the footwear to the automotive sector, from leather goods to furnishings.

The history that led to the development of this new line of products is worthy of interest: Hydroil is the result of an Italian research project conducted through newco Tannow. Started a couple of years ago, the research was born with the aim of developing products of natural origin for the tanning sector, starting from the by-products of the agri-food industry.

HYDROIL può essere utilizzato come inibitore del cromo (VI) nella fase di riconcia oppure nell’intero processo per conciare in totale assenza di cromo.

Il processo di concia è risultato valido su pelli destinate a qualsiasi segmento produttivo, dalla calzatura all’automotive, dalla pelletteria all’arredamento.

La storia che ha portato allo sviluppo di questa nuova linea di prodotti è degna di interesse: Hydroil è il risultato di un progetto di ricerca italiano condotto attraverso la newco Tannow. Partita un paio d’anni fa, la ricerca nasce con l’obiettivo di sviluppare prodotti per il settore conciario di derivazione naturale, a partire da sottoprodotti dell’industria agroalimentare.

L’innovazione proposta era la seguente: riutilizzare le AVO (Acque di Vegetazione Olearie) per sviluppare prodotti ad effetto conciante ed antiossidante per realizzare pellami metalfree e base wet-blue resistenti alla formazione del Cr VI. Tutto ciò a partire da una considerazione fondamentale: l’Italia è uno dei più importanti produttori mondiale di articoli in pelle ed il secondo produttore mondiale di olio di oliva.

Ma vediamo come due esigenze industriali si sono felicemente incontrate in un’ottica di economia circolare. Le acque di vegetazione olearie (AVO) sono le acque reflue derivanti dalla produzione dell’olio d’oliva e sono tra i reflui agroindustriali a più alto tasso inquinante, ma in realtà contengono composti fenolici e polifenolici ad elevata azione antimicrobica e fitotossica che è un peccato non valorizzare.

I principali composti fenolici presenti nelle AVO sono l’idrossitirosolo, il tirosolo, il catecolo, il metilcatecolo, l’oleuropeina, l’acido caffeico, gallico, vanillico e cumarico, che hanno straordinarie proprietà antiossidanti. Fra l’altro nelle AVO sono già presenti tannini

But let’s see how two industrial needs have happily met in a circular economy perspective. Olive Mill Wastewater (OMWW) derives from the production of olive oil and is among the most polluting agroindustrial wastewater, containing in reality phenol and polyphenolic compounds with a high antimicrobial and phytotoxic action and it would be a pity not to value them. The main phenolic compounds present in

OMWW are hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, catechol, methylcatechol, oleuropein, caffeic, gallic, vanillic and coumaric acid, which have extraordinary antioxidant properties.

Among other things, natural tannins with tanning action are already present in OMWW. Consider that hydroxytyrosol can constitute up to 50% of total OMWW polyphenols and that is has been recognised as one of the most potent antioxidants in nature, about ten times greater than green tea and at least twice as high as CoQ10.

And there is a huge quantity of olive mill wastewater, just think that from 100 kg olives are obtained 20-22 kg of olive oil and 50-80 kg of OMWW. At European level, in 2014/2015 were produced about 4.8 million tons of OMWW, which need to be disposed. Hence the solidity of the project also on an industrial level.

To conclude, the results of the research were in line with the best expectations. The tanning power of Hydroil turned out to be comparable to that of natural tannins.

In addition, the antioxidant power of Hydroil on wetblue retanning reduces the formation of Cr VI by 50% thus allowing the replacement of all synthetic retanning agents that contain formaldehyde.

E di acque olearie ce n’è in quantità, basti pensare che da 100 kg olive si ottengono 20-22 kg di olio d’oliva e 50-80 kg di AVO. A livello europeo nella stagione 2014/2015 sono state prodotte circa 4.8 milioni di tonnellate di AVO, che necessitano di essere smaltite.

Da qui la solidità del progetto anche a livello industriale. Per concludere, i risultati della ricerca sono stati in linea con le migliori aspettative. Il potere conciante di Hydroil è risultato paragonabile a quello dei tannini naturali.

Inoltre, il potere antiossidante di Hydroil su wet-blue riconciato riduce del 50% la formazione di Cr VI permettendo così anche la sostituzione di tutti i riconcianti sintetici che contengono formaldeide. Coperto da segreto, l’innovativo sistema di concia prodotto da Tannow e distribuito da Dermochimica è in attesa del riconoscimento di due brevetti. Le produzioni realizzate in conceria hanno dato ottimi risultati non solo in termini di basso impatto ambientale del processo conciario, completamente metal-free, ma anche per le caratteristiche qualitative delle pelli finite assimilabili a quelle conciate al cromo.

A questa pompa vengono abbinati due compressori e così il sistema IceVacuum raggiunge un vuoto di 5mBar. L’IceVacuum inoltre funziona anche se posizionato lontano dall’essiccatoio, fino a una distanza di 50 mt e può essere installato come upgrade per migliorare l’efficienza di sottovuoti di altri marchi. La sua elevata capacità di aspirazione (2500 M3/h) gli permette di far funzionare agevolmente due sottovuoti, riducendo fortemente ingombri, consumi elettrici e costi di manutenzione. Un’altra importante novità del 2019 è il sistema brevettato Icesystem, un rivoluzionario sistema di produzione dell’acqua gelida. ”con questo nuovo sistema l’acqua mantiene una temperatura costante di 7°, estate e inverno, garantendo così un’asciugatura delle pelli sempre alle massime prestazioni e di altissima qualità, durante tutto l’anno” ci spiegano i responsabili dell’azienda vicentina. Brevettato da Mec Man “questo sistema non è un chiller, e soprattutto garantisce queste prestazioni con un consumo di soli 4kw, quando un chiller ne richiederebbe quasi 200”.

L’Icesystem si avvale di una tecnologia innovativa e nasce soprattutto per risolvere i problemi delle concerie e dei terzisti che lavorano in quei paesi dove il caldo e l’umidità compromettono e rallentano la produzione. “crediamo che l’Icesystem possa rappresentare la risposta definitiva ai rigidi parametri imposti in particolare dal settore automotive poiché garantirà uniformità di asciugaggio indipendentemente dalle condizioni climatiche esterne” concludono Agostini e Baron.

Aware that the theme of sustainability now goes through every aspect of our lives, but above all that a growing number of designers and stylistic teams are desperate for producers of eco-friendly materials and components, the Hong Kong fair maximises its commitment to environmental protection, proposing itself as the “Sustainable Sourcing Platform in the Asia Pacific Region”. It does so by putting in place a series of behaviors, initiatives and events that respond to the needs of what is now called a real Fashion Revolution. The aim is to develop a large “business community” committed to integrating each one in its own sphere themes such as traceability, sustainable production, reuse of waste. This year through a digital campaign - will be launched a program for the identification and enhancement of the most active exhibitors on this front. During the fair, however, an intense program of conferences and seminars will deepen hot topics. Among the most important we mention the “Sustainable Fashion Conference” scheduled for the morning of March 14th, followed in the afternoon by the “Sustainability in the Leather Supply Chain Conference”. A selection of sustainable products will be on display in the heart of the section dedicated to components named Materials+ .

Consapevole che il tema della sostenibilità ormai attraversa ogni aspetto della nostra vita, ma soprattutto che un crescente numero di designers e team stilistici è alla disperata ricerca di produttori di materiali e componenti eco-compatibili, la fiera di Hong Kong massimizza il suo impegno verso la salvaguardia ambientale proponendosi come la “Sustainable Sourcing Platform in the Asia Pacific Region”. Lo fa mettendo in campo tutta una serie di comportamenti, iniziative ed eventi che rispondono alle esigenze di quella che ormai viene definita una vera e propria Fashion Revolution.

Lo scopo è quello di sviluppare una grande “business community” impegnata a integrare ciascuno nel proprio ambito temi come la tracciabilità, la produzione sostenibile, il riutilizzo degli scarti. Quest’anno verrà lanciato un programma per l’identificazione e la valorizzazione - attraverso una campagna digitale -degli espositori più attivi su questo fronte. Durante la fiera, invece, un intenso programma di conferenze e seminari approfondiranno gli argomenti caldi. Tra i più importanti segnaliamo la “Sustainable Fashion Conference” programmata per la mattina del 14 marzo, seguita nel pomeriggio dalla “Sustainability in the Leather Supply Chain Conference”. Una selezione di prodotti sostenibili saranno invece esposti nel cuore della sezione dedicata ai componenti Materials+. Passando ai contenuti della fiera, a dispetto di un mercato delle pelli grezze tornato ai livelli della crisi finanziaria del 2008 con un calo della domanda globale stimato fra il 10 e il 30%, ad APLF il padiglione dedicato alle concerie del centro congressi di Hong Kong è come al solito tutto esaurito. Gli organizzatori annunciano la presenza di oltre 20 collettive nazionali dai principali paesi esportatori di pelle. Per risolvere la cronica mancanza di spazi nella sezione dedicata alla pelle, la fiera sta lavorando ad una radicale redistribuzione degli spazi per l’edizione 2020.

Gli organizzatori hanno annunciato che il prossimo anno APLF Leather si sposterà dal livello 1 al livello 3 dove potrà guadagnare più spazio, mentre Materials+, Fashion Access e Cashmere World passeranno al livello 1. Tornano all’edizione di quest’anno, visto il successo della Leather Naturally Zone lanciata a Shanghai per la prima volta in occasione di ACLE 2018, l’area sarà allestita anche a Hong Kong per dare spazio ai talk mirati a trasmettere i valori di bellezza, longevità e biodegradabilità della pelle.

Medio Chiampo’s major projects Last December, was presented Medio Chiampo’s five-year master plan, the Vicenzabased company that manages the public and industrial water service of Montebello Vicentino, Zermeghedo and Gambellara, including the treatment of tannery waste.

The action plan will start this year and will involve investments of over 11 million euro. The goal is to modernise plants, build the new management centre and improve the efficiency of the services provided. The project envisages an important implementation of the purification plant, designed to respond in an

increasingly effective manner to the evolution of the production process and to changes in the quality of wastewater, in a more efficient and flexible way based on workloads.

Two new large tanks will be built, with a capacity of 7 thousand cubic metres each, which will allow to meet the needs determined by the introduction of new substances in the tanning process, in particular in wet white.

Interventions will also have the objective of further reducing the volume of sludge, which a few years ago reached 12,000 tons per year and today have fallen to 7,500 tons.

Grandi progetti per Medio Chiampo È stato presentato lo scorso dicembre il master plan quinquennale di Medio Chiampo, la società vicentina che gestisce il servizio idrico pubblico e industriale di Montebello Vicentino, Zermeghedo e Gambellara, compresa la depurazione dei reflui della concia. Il piano di interventi partirà quest’anno e prevede investimenti per oltre 11 milioni di euro.

L’obiettivo è ammodernare gli impianti, costruire il nuovo centro direzionale e migliorare l’efficienza dei servizi erogati.

Il progetto prevede un’importante implementazione dell’impianto di depurazione, studiata per rispondere in maniera sempre più efficace all’evoluzione del processo produttivo e ai cambiamenti della qualità dei reflui, in modo più efficiente e flessibile in base ai carichi di lavorazione.

Saranno realizzate due nuove grandi vasche, della capacità di 7 mila metri cubi ciascuna, che permetteranno di rispondere alle esigenze determinate dall’introduzione di nuove sostanze nel processo di concia, in particolare nel wet white. Gli interventi avranno anche l’obiettivo di ridurre ulteriormente il volume dei fanghi, che qualche anno fa arrivavano a 12.000 tonnellate l’anno e oggi sono scesi a 7.500 tonnellate.
