The Women’s Movement in Edmonton before the First World War

International Women’s Day is on March 8th and will be celebrated with an unveiling of a plaque at The Triangle in Palmers Green commemorating 100 years of Votes for Women and the infamous incident in June 1914 when a Suffragette Meeting was ambushed by a group of louts determined to sabotage pro8

ceedings. The Suffragettes* were very good at getting publicity but their motto of “Deeds not Words” should apply to the women of Edmonton who actively fought for women’s rights not only in Parliament but also in the Workplace. None more so than Marion May Barrass whose name will www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

be familiar to readers who know the football stadium in Jubilee Park named after her husband. As early as April 1906 Mrs Barrass was holding an open air meeting meeting at Edmonton Green promoting Votes For Women. The meeting attracted speakers of the stature of Annie Kenney, one of the few working class committee members of The Suffragettes and Teresa Billington-Greig who later formed The Women’s Freedom League. Marion Barrass was Chair of The Edmonton Women’s Cooperative Guild, became a member of the Board of (Workhouse) Guardians and put herself forward as a candidate in Local Elections. Between them Henry and Marion Barras served Edmonton for over 30 years. When women at Eley’s Cartridge Factory went on strike in October 1906 Mrs Barrass spoke on their behalf at Edmonton Town Hall when an Edmonton branch of The National Federation of Women’s Workers was formed. The National Body was led by leading www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Suffragist* Mary Macarthur who supported the women through to a satisfactory result. Mary Macarthur returned to Edmonton in March 1907 supporting a fundraising event for NFWW and again in March 1908 speaking at a Socialist meeting in The Town Hall. Mary Macarthur activities for the Women’s Movement lead to English Heritage erecting a Blue Plaque on her London home. One of the young women working at Eley’s inspired by Marion Barrass and Mary Macarthur was Esther Dicks. She immediately got involved with the Women’s Movement and devoted her life to Trade Union work and Local Government. As Esther Young she became leader of Edmonton Urban District Council in 1936 and ten years later became the first female Mayor of MARCH 2018

History Edmonton Borough Council. At a second strike at Eley’s 6 years later the women workers there showed an exceptional degree of solidarity and determination to resolve their grievances. Esther Young and The Eley Cartridge Girls are topics I will return to in later postings. At their their inaugural meeting on 20th April 1910 the Edmonton branch of The Women’s Liberal Association were acknowledging that “Women of Edmonton were waking up to the fact that the governing of our nation con-

cerns us as much as our husbands”. This organisation held regular debates on the topic of Women’s Suffrage even attracting men to the discussion as at The Independent School room on 26th April 1911. By November 1913 at Edmonton Town Hall they proposed. This conference believes that women can only secure their right place in the Liberal Party when their claim to the franchise is recognised. It therefore urges associations to do their utmost to secure the adoption of candidates who are in favour of Women’s

www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Suffrage and to undertake to abstain from working with candidates who are opposed to that reform.” Meanwhile in February 1913 The Suffragettes experienced a hostile reception at Edmonton Town Hall . Even the conservative Weekly Herald admitted that the louts who disrupted their meeting “were people there who were out for a lark. They were not present because they were deeply concerned about the Pros & Cons of the question.” More than likely the same sort who hijacked the Palmers Green meeting mentioned above. The event lead to calls to ban Suffrage meetings at the Town Hall. In my research for this article I was staggered to discover that Women Teachers at this

time would lose their jobs on marriage. This didn’t stop The Edmonton Women’s Teachers Association from holding a meeting at The Lamb Institute in Church Street on April 24th 1914 to discuss Women’s Suffrage. Palmers Green and The Suffragettes have received high profile coverage from local historians but my research revealed a grass roots level of activity in Edmonton that was at least as influential as their middle class neighbours and activists. Just because none of them went to prison for their actions this shouldn’t prevent us recognising the achievements of Edmonton women in the equality war that unfortunately today is still having to be fought.

Inspiring Women In Our Community Celebrating International Women’s Day 2018

Is anything possible? Can you have a successful career when you have a young family? Can you do something brand new even if you do not have any experience in a new field? Can you be successful even though you have left school with no qualification? Can passion for something be enough to form a successful business? We have been in touch with 5 very different, and successful and inspirational ladies to find out about their journey. Desirable gift ideas were researched too as Mothers Day is so close.

The school was set up by Nina in order to provide professional dance classes and musical theatre opportunities for local children. Nina left school being unable to read and write and has since gone on to achieve great things with PPAS; she has always wanted to give back to the community and provide performing arts opportunities that were unavailable to her as a young girl due to lack of funds. The school is located in Edmonton, a highly deprived, diverse and high crime suburb of North London. Despite the hardship many of our children face on a daily basis, PPAS has managed to provide a focus and create opportunities and ambition for many local young people who otherwise would not have had them. Many of our students have now gone on to secure scholarships at top performing arts schools and colleges. PPAS are committed to providing students with top qualwww.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Comedy Lab Plus at the Soho Theatre to The Pride at Trafalgar Studios and of course Panto as Dame Trott. In Puss in Boots, there are two baddies; the Ogre and his Henchman played by Windsor Liong whose previous panto credits include Puss in Boots at Hoxton Hall last Christmas, Jack & the Beanstalk at Theatre Royal Stratford East and many more appearances to list. productions at the venue and was Wishee Washee in Aladdin at Millfield Theatre, Christmas 2016. From the Urdang Academy we have recent graduate Lottie-Daisy Francis, in the role of Princess Alice, who having made her Pantomime debut in the role at Hoxton Hall last Christmas makes her first appearance at Enfield’s Dugdale Centre. Just when you thought that was all, we have, of course, the finest feline in Pantoland, playing Puss is Lydia Rose Bertie, whose purr-fect performance will prowl the Dugdale stage to change Colin’s future as can only happen in a fairytale. Oh yes it can! Some of you will remember Lydia’s stunning performance as Jill, in Jack and the Beanstalk at Millfield this Christmas, so don’t miss this opportunity to see her in a very different disguise. The shows Writer & Director,

Marc Day said, ‘Following on from the previous eight Easter Pantomimes, I am delighted to introduce our fabulous loyal audience members to some familiar faces along with new talented performers. As with last year the production also features four local children from the borough.’ With the combination of the talent above and all the pantomime essentials, music, dance, audience participation, and a sprinkle of panto magic, Puss in Boots promises to be a fabulous panto for all the family. So why not whisk-er your way to the Dugdale Centre this Easter. (did we mention bad jokes?)

Education

HISTORY

HND

The Higher National Diploma has become an evermore-popular pathway towards a degree.

Why is this?

This route is overwhelmingly being chosen by mature learners with busy family, work-filled lives but who are motivated to achieve the qualification. The qualification is broken down into 2 years delivery, Level 4 HNC in year 1 and Level 5 HND in year 2. This allows learners to take a break in learning after year 1 if they choose with a level 4 HNC 20

qualification. Finishing at this stage still provides entry to university with an exemption at year 1 ie. 2 years left to achieve degree. Those continuing to HND will be exempted for 2 years of the degree and need only complete 1 more year at university. The course’s modular structure means that learners are constantly engaged in new topics helping to provide a balanced, www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

comprehensive business qualification. The HND is mapped to universities degree qualifications meaning transition to university is seamless. Best of all is the friendly, supportive environment in which the course is delivered. At ECC we recognise that learners may have been out of the classroom for a some time so a combination of low student:staff ratios, flexible timetables, tailored student support and good tutor experience all come together to provide a conducive environment for learners. At ECC we are in partnership with OLC Europe London to deliver HND Business Management in conjunction with University Centre Colchester.

It was time consuming searching for information and writing down what was on every day. I decided to put something together for parents so they could find what was on for families in one place. Facebook Groups are useful with communicating with other parents, but posts get lost quickly. Having a website ensures information stays there long term. We are so lucky there is such a good variety of things to do in the borough and I really wanted to communicate this. Why did you start the business when you did? What were you doing before? I was a Business Studies teacher at a local secondary school for 10 years before I started Sophia’s Diary. Although this was a rewarding job, I wanted something for flexible, so I was around for the kids more. The business was started as I saw a need for it in the local area. I absolutely love working with so many local businesses, schools and parents. I can see we have helped so many people. There are national companies that advertise classes, but I am passionate about communicating relevant local news and events to families and establishing good relationships in community. Many business members have built a support network too. Building these relationships is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

when you have your own business, it is a huge juggle too. I work during school hours, pick up the kids from school every day, take them to their extra-curricular activities and then catch up with work needed too. It is a long day but it works around family life. How do you find inspiration? I find inspiration from my family and providing them with what they need. What’s your productivity secret? I have a timer to complete certain tasks. What’s your favorite quote? Anything is possible

LYDS community

Hello all!

It’s with great pleasure that Love Your Doorstep (LYDS) have been welcomed on board the wonderful Edmonton Green Magazine. Many of you will have heard of LYDS and the work we’ve been doing across the Borough for the past six years. For those of you who don’t know our back story, the concept of LYDS was born when founder Emma Rigby personally witnessed the horror that was the 2011 Riots. Emma wanted to set up a focal

point for information sharing and the Riots motivated her into setting up a Facebook group for Enfield. This was an instant success due to the number of likeminded people who wanted to bring back the community spirit to Enfield. In 2012 the LYDS website was born. Now our Facebook group has 22,000 local members, making it the largest online community group in Enfield. Fully moderated by a team day and night, our platform is the perfect place

to discuss anything local in ‘real time’. We put local people in touch with local products and service. LYDS currently supports over 650 local businesses. We’re bringing together both businesses and individuals, promoting local job opportunities, supporting local charities, problem solving and sharing ideas all in one spot! For example, one of our members recently set up a ‘Love on the Rocks Enfield’ Facebook group after much discussion and interest in the idea.

www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

In just a couple of weeks the numbers of rocks being decorated and hidden has multiplied, and as strange as this sounds, is another demonstration of community spirit! Our Borough is a wonderful place to live. Edmonton My Dad and Bruce By Leigh Hemmings Davies

Every Edmonton person of a certain age claim to know Bruce Forsyth, whether their went to school together used the family garage that was in Victoria Road N9, or their dog was related to their cat in the 1800’s! My Dad, Albert Hemmings, mixed with the star over the years on different occasions. My Great Nan, would organise coach outings and Bruce Forsyth, aged about 12, and his family would go on these day trips. Dad says Bruce was more known at this age as Forsyth son from the garage. The Forsyth family was quite well known in the area through having the garage. My dad knew the family from the garage too, Brucie’s dad, sister Maisie and nephew Terry in the later years. Brucie’s Dad played the bugle at Edmonton Salvation Army, Bruce is very much like his dad, tall and slim, his mum sung at the Salvation Army too. When Brucie’s Dad re married the wedding took place All Saints Church, Church Street N9. My Dad went to the Church and at this time Bruce was really making his name and was the host of Sunday night at the Palladium. Dad said the press was all on Bruce and he made it quite clear this was his Dad’s day and no photos of himself. 28

Edmonton Green Magazine | #10

Once when my Dad see Bruce in the local theatre Cira 1960, in Weymouth Bruce came in the audience and my Dad tugged his jacket and said, ‘’I know you, I’m from Edmonton,’’ Bruce replied, ‘’come round to the dressing room after the show.’’ Dad went to the stage door and a theatre worker came out and asked, ‘’where was the couple from Edmonton,’’ Dad stepped forward and was taking into his Brucie’s dressing room. Bruce was in a silk dressing gown, a smoking jacket this was known as, he had a glass of scotch in hand and Dad joined him. Bruce asked if my Dad had seen his Dad recently and if he was ok. Indeed his Dad was fine telling stories of his son Bruce and the fact that the summer season hadn’t been so good and he was having to send Bruce the train fair to get home. In 1996 Bruce’s sister, Maisie died and her funeral was held at the Edmonton Salvation Army. My Mum, Jan, was a volunteer for the Salvation Army so was there doing the tea’s. Bruce was in attendance for the funeral arriving in his pale blue Rolls Royce with number www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

plates BF1. Bruce’s ex wives was also in attendance, one getting lost at the Angel and Bruce looking for them! The corsage drove along Victoria Road, passed the garage, which was a new garage compared to their original garage, this was built when they modernised Victoria Road. When Bruce passed away I called Dad to tell him and we all felt sad. Dad felt sad as he was proud to have known the boy mighty from Edmonton. Whilst I felt sad as my generation wouldn’t know television without such an iconic figure. Dad sent Wilnelia a condolence card. In December 2017 Dad received a personal invitation to attend Sir Bruce – A Celebration. This was a night of Bruce’s favourite stars, friend and families to remember this iconic all round entertainer to be held at Bruce’s and my Dad’s favourite theatre, the London Palladium. Sadly Dad couldn’t attend on the night as he is currently undergoing treatment. So myself and my husband attended. It was a star studded evening with the likes of Debbie Mcgee, Tess Daly, hosting, Nicholas Parsons, the stars and judges from Strictly come Dancing, Phil Glenister, (who we shared our isle with)! New readers, back stage crews, Robert and Barbara Powel, Robert Lindsey, David Walliams, Duchess of York, Kenny Lynch, Andrew Lloyd Webber plus many more. The red carpet was out along with the paparazzi. The evening started with a splendid tap routine from Adam Garcia which he ended in the famous Bruce ‘thinker’ pose. Two of Bruce’s daughters sung, Laura with a gospel group www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

the other, Julie on her own. The Dave Arch and the Strictly come dancing band was the musical accompanies and Dame Shirley Bassey was the ‘star turn’. There was video tributes from the likes of, Jimmy Tarbuck, Sir Elton John and a very emotional Ant and Dec. Lady Forsyth received a standing ovation when she took to the stage to say a very emotional speech about her beloved Bruce whilst their son JJ watched from the audience along with the rest of Bruce’s family who one was overheard saying threw her tears that a lot of the photos and video clips being shown was new to her. I bought Dad a programme which was priced at £17 £10 of which was being shared to Marie Currie and The Wilnelia Forsyth Puerto Rico Appeal. It’s not really a show programme more a photo collection and is a lovely keepsake. Its safe to say that the mighty atom boy from Edmonton did well! It was nice to know him know him nice. MARCH 2018
