HALLOWEEN FUN IN N9 AND N18 Edmonton Parents Get Together (find us on Facebook) had a scarily busy October, hosting an spooky-themed play street as well as organising a Halloween window trail in the local area.

On 24th October, families came together for a Halloween fancy dress Play Street on Exeter Road N9. Amongst the free play activities, children enjoyed making lanterns from recycled jars, drawing giant pumpkins and skulls with chalks on the road and getting their faced painted to match their creepy costumes! Continuing on from last year’s Halloween window trail (which was organised as a way for families to enjoy the season in a way that was covid safe) EPGT put together another map plotting homes with decorations so that they could be found easily by trick or treaters along the way. EPGT are planning more local festive fun over the next couple of months - join the group and stay tuned for more info! Edmonton Parents Get Together is THE local Facebook group for families in the area. Founded in 2019, the group aims to help build a positive network for parents living and raising their children in N9 and N18. Members share local info, groups and items to give away, and much more. Join us today!

EDMONTON GREEN SHOPPING CENTRE JOINS THE NATIONAL EFFORT TO SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE INTO EMPLOYMENT Edmonton Green Shopping Centre (EGSC) joins the many businesses nationally that have successfully employed an Apprentice through the Government’s Kickstart scheme. Today will be the first day for new Marketing Apprentice, Daniel McFarlane, as he joins the team at EGSC. Daniel, 24 and based in Edmonton, has been seeking employment since he completed his degree in Business and Events Management at the University of Hertfordshire. He will begin to work alongside the team at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre and Ashdown Phillips, for six months as of today, on a 25hour week contract. Asset Director, Sabri Marsaoui at EGSC, who is a great advocate for the scheme, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming Daniel to the team. Anyone that knows of us will know that our ethos is all about supporting our local community as much as possible. When we heard about the Government’s Kickstart Scheme we had to get involved. Providing a local young person with the tools to succeed later in life is something we are really passionate

about.” According to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), the pandemic has taken its toll and has had the greatest impact on the employment prospects of those Brits aged between 16 – 24. The Kickstart Scheme allows those young people that get involved a chance at moving forward despite what’s been happening. Sabri continued: “With the Kickstart scheme and working closely with Daniel, our aim is to help, support and guide him and equip him with the skills he needs to confidently secure a fulltime permanent role in the future. We want to be a part of the solution and getting Britain back on track post the pandemic.” What’s more, with this has come another two roles and opportunities for

local young people. Six months ago, we announced the partnership of two local businesses – Edmonton Green Shopping Centre and Blaze Communication, based in Enfield. With their union, came more work and of course the need for more hands on deck. Blaze Communication were also then able to recruit their own apprentice, ShanahLeigh Lee-Own. Shanah-Leigh, 17 and based in Enfield, began working full time with the agency in August. She is also a Marketing Apprentice and is based at the offices 9-5 Monday to Friday. Jamie Richardson, Principal at Blaze Communication, said: “We are so grateful

to have been able to give ShanahLeigh this opportunity. Not only is she learning skills that work directly alongside what she is taught in college, but we now have a team member that is fresh minded, willing to learn and really eager to get things done.” Shanah-Leigh will be with Blaze for a year with the hopes of her future in Marketing being brighter with a years apprenticeship behind her. Edmonton Green Shopping Centre are still accepting applications for their Operations Apprentice role so please do look out and apply if you’d like to get involved.

NEW SERVICE LAUNCHED TO TACKLE WEIGHTY PROBLEM IN ENFIELD A new service to help adults lose weight and reduce the risk factors for diseases such as diabetes, coronavirus and hypertension has been launched by Enfield Council. Almost a quarter of Enfield residents are obese, and eligible residents who are struggling with their weight can talk to their GP or another health and care professional for a referral or self-refer to the Adult Weight Management Service which will help them put in place a plan to shed the pounds. The scheme supports the existing Children’s Weight Management Service which aims to help primary school children keep to a healthy weight and learn good habits to ensure they remain at a healthier weight throughout their lives. Ten per cent of the borough’s Reception age children are currently obese. Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said ‘I very much welcome these services which will help some of the most vulnerable in our society. I would urge anyone who is concerned about their weight to contact these services. I know that losing weight can be difficult but this will help protect our health and make us feel fitter and healthier’.

Overconsumption is one of the most significant factors contributing to becoming overweight. Figures show that many adults are consuming 200 to 300 extra calories a day above recommended guidelines with children who are already overweight consuming up to 500 calories more than they need. These services will help individuals and families not only to make healthier and sustained changes to their diet and their levels of physical activity.

LIGHTS OF LOVE A celebration of remembrance Christmas is a very special time of year, bringing joy to many. Yet it can be especially difficult if a loved one is going through a hard time or is no longer with you. Covid-19 has also put more distance between loved ones and increased emotional stress. Lights of Love is an opportunity to remember those you love by making a dedication to those who have, or still do, light up your life. Dedications can be a fond memory, words of love or hopes for the future. Anything that brings you closer to your loved one. Each dedication is added to the display in our centre, our dedication book and our Mircosoft Enfield, 33 Genotin Road window display. For each dedication you also receive a hanging heart of love so

DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT SIGNED TO BRING FORWARD AFFORDABLE HOMES ON MERIDIAN WATER Enfield Council and Vistry Partnerships have completed a development agreement which will see at least 250 affordable homes built on the next phase of the borough’s transformational Meridian Water programme. The development agreement which was signed on Wednesday 20th October will mean all the homes on the site of the development – known as Meridian Two, will be affordable with half offered at London Affordable Rent and the other half offering shared ownership and homes at London Living Rent levels. The scheme will also provide 3,000 square metres of commercial space which the Council hopes will become a hub for creative industries. An operator will be appointed to manage the space in the near future. Meridian Two is on Leeside Road, next to Pymmes Brook and adjacent to the next phases of Meridian Water, which includes up to 2,300 homes and extensive parkland. With this being the second Development Agreement entered into on Meridian Water, the 20

project now has 1,200 homes under contract to be delivered. Vistry Partnerships were selected as the preferred bidder last year following a competitive process through the Greater London Authority’s London Development Panel 2. The GLA is also providing grant funding to enable the scheme to be taken forward. On completion of the homes by Vistry Partnerships, the properties will be acquired by Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing, a Registered Provider who will own and manage them. Subject to a detailed Reserved Matters Application being approved, work on building the first homes is expected to start in the middle of 2022 with the first dwellings and workspace expected to be completed in 2024.
www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk
The Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “This is great news for Enfield and its residents, we are forging ahead with Meridian Water and making rapid progress to provide a range of housing for local residents. “Meridian Two is important because every home will be genuinely affordable homes for Edmonton residents and those across the borough. “The site is adjacent to the area that is intended to become a new park at Meridian Water. This will be a fantastic feature alongside the new homes. I am looking forward to seeing the construction progress quickly and to residents moving in.”
