EDMONTON STANDS UNITED TO TACKLE RACISM The ‘Three Kings’ (Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho) have appeared in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre in a bold statement piece to unite youth within local communities.
Being inspired by the incidents during the Euros, local graffiti artist Simon from Blingwear, felt it was his duty to help his local community and create the piece within Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. Simon said, “When communities stand together, amazing things happen. This wasn’t about art for me but a symbol of unity and to encourage young people today to remain united. This was the only thing I could do. “I wanted to do my bit to inspire and support our local community. Since we’ve completed it, I already feel like we’ve achieved what we set out to do. We wanted to create a movement. I’ve seen it being posted on social media and people talking about it. People are even coming into Edmonton just to see it. That 8

was the aim. We are now looking to create similar pieces in Tottenham and Wood Green. This isn’t about stopping racism in football but once and for all.” Simon, who has always lived in the local area (Edmonton, Tottenham and Wood Green) works with young people and is well known amongst them locally. With what was happening in the media and knowing the youth culture of today, Simon wanted to make a statement to do his bit to help and leave a legacy for young people. Simon, alongside another Blingwear artist Gnasher, transformed the blank canvas near the North Mall car park into something inspirational with a very strong message to support not only this generation but those to follow.
Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, said, “In light of the online abuse and racist insults aimed at some of the England football players the talented duo has created a very inspiring mural for the community to enjoy and reflect. “When Simon approached us to create the work, we were more than happy to support and stand together on this. It is a very strong image with an equally powerful message.”
The duo seemed to have created quite a storm and they were met by several passers-by who showed their appreciation for the talent and message behind the piece. It’s for all to see so pop down and have a look. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Pop it on your socials tagging us and using the hashtags #3kings #stopracism #bunracism. BIG NARSTIE AND MAN LIKE HACKS PAY A VISIT TO EDMONTON GREEN IN THE NAME OF CHARITY Don’t miss your chance to see them! Yes, school may have started for some but the party isn’t over yet…This Saturday, 4th September, head down to Edmonton Green Shopping Centre to celebrate One Great Day alongside celebrities Big Narstie, Man Like Hacks and our very own Sissy Lea. One Great Day is an annual fun raising day held in shopping centres across the country in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and local charities. Edmonton Green Shopping Centre have chosen to partner with local charity, Youth & Community Connexions (a youth charity striving to support and facilitate both young people and parents as well as the wider community), in what promises to be a fun filled day of entertainment for all the family. From 11am to 4pm on Saturday 4th September, families will be spoilt for choice with carousel rides, face 12

painting, meeting superheroes and a full-on talent show judged by our very own local talent Sissy Lea. She will be joined by celebs Big Narstie, Man Like Hacks and Abena Adofo. All proceeds made during the day will be split between Youth & Community Connexions (NYCC) and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Cynthia Cobourn, Director of NYCC, said, “This weekend is something the team have been looking forward to for a while. We haven’t been involved before and it is such a fantastic way for us to have fun and raise money and awareness within the local community for local projects that may provide a valuable resource to them when they need it. “We are so grateful to all the judges for taking time out of their schedules to come and support us.” Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Big Narstie
said, “We are really looking forward to this weekend. We have some great entertainment planned and are excited to welcome families to come and celebrate One Great Day with us. “Partnering with Youth & Community Connexions was an easy choice for us as an exceptional charity supporting youths wellbeing which unites everybody together building a stronger community; being based within the Shopping Centre and they do such a fabulous job with young people locally.
We hope the event raises enough money for them to create a new learning hub for the community and local businesses. There are talks of drama classes, photography and use of some rooms for free for businesses and individuals. We cannot wait! This is our chance to raise money as a community for charity and have lots of fun doing it.”
Everyone is welcome so please make your way down to Edmonton Green Shopping Centre on Saturday 4th September for One Great Day.

Edmonton Parents Get Together (find us on Facebook) along with N9 based Doodle Designs brought community art fun for families across Enfield throughout August, as part of the Council’s A Month Of Sundays street festival initiative. Edmonton hosted two out of the five locations across the borough. On 8th August, Leeds Street N18 was transformed into a mini-festival, where local families enjoyed food, entertainment as well as giant bubble blowing and creating their own chalk pavement art. Families also enjoyed getting their photo taken with our lifesize rainbow graffiti wings, as a nod to the Angel Edmonton. The event at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre on 22nd August saw a complete takeover of the North Mall, turning it into a giant messy play area for children to draw, paint and create
all over the floor - giving the Tate Modern’s current exhibition a run for its money! Young people were also able to contribute to a vibrant community mural along the seating area - check out their handiwork next time you visit the Green. Edmonton Parents Get Together is THE local Facebook group for families in the area. Founded in 2019, the group aims to help build a positive network for parents living and raising their children in N9 and N18. Members share local info, groups and items to give away, and much more. SCHOOL PUPILS URGED TO GET THEIR FIRST CORONAVIRUS JAB BEFORE SCHOOL RESTARTS A major drive has been launched by the NHS, and supported by Enfield Council to ensure young people in the borough are vaccinated against coronavirus before schools reopen in September. All 16 and 17 year olds are to be offered the Covid-19 vaccine and NHS England has launched an online site finder to make it easier for young people to be inoculated and receive vital protection against the potentially lethal coronavirus. Enfield Council is supporting this work and is providing a vaccine bus is touring the borough to make sure everyone has access to the potentially life saving jabs. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, said: “We’re urging everyone who is eligible to get the coronavirus vaccine to get it as soon as possible but we are especially keen for residents from our black and minority ethnic populations and eastern 16

European backgrounds – which have lower vaccination take up rates to come forward. “We have vaccine buses and pop up sites all round the borough in the weeks to come, so it will be impossible to miss them. Vaccination is the single most effective defence against coronavirus. You don’t need to be registered with a GP or make an appointment to get the vaccine and nor will there be any checks on immigration status. ”As well as our school aged residents I would urge anyone who has not been vaccinated already to get their jab to ensure they remain safe and healthy and play their full part in helping us to beat this terrible virus.”

WHO OR WHAT IS ENCAF? “Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) is a civil society forum. ‘We’re an action group created to confront the emergency that climate change imposes on us all. In the Paris Agreement almost all the nations of the Earth agreed to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels”. We are currently heading for a 3 to 4% rise in temperature by the end of this century. This increase will be a global catastrophe.

Edmonton Green Magazine | #15
Tackling this has to be a communitywide effort. We network, build partnerships, form working groups, exchange information and good practice. You don’t need to be an expert to join us. Many of us aren’t, but we listen to others, read, discuss and get better informed. More than 100 groups in the Borough are keen to come together to try and locally make a difference. Our Forum meets regularly to exchange information, network and decide on critical action points. Please join us!”

Enfield’s Big Green Climate Festival! 18th - 26th SEPTEMBER In November (for COP26) world leaders will be meeting in Glasgow to decide the next steps to tackle climate change. This is probably the most critical meeting of the year. If we fail to agree a climate strategy this next November the future for our children and grandchildren will be very bleak. EnCaf is supporting the national Climate Coalition’s nationwide Festival to highlight the climate emergency we are in and put further pressure
on world leaders to act. Look out for activities happening across the borough from the 18th to the 26th September. More than 60 groups in the Borough have expressed an interest in being involved in a local festival for Enfield, and are keen to come together to try and make a difference. We’ll have activities on and offline and will be taking all of the COVID safety precautions.

WAKE UP, ‘SOME GUYS’ HAS SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU 50 years since the critically acclaimed “Maggie May” topped the charts in the UK, the sensational theatrical production Some Guys Have All The Luck takes the UK by storm. Direct from the West End, Some Guys Have All the Luck celebrates the career of one of rock’s greatest icons, Rod Stewart’s incredible journey from street busker to international superstar. Paul Metcalfe delivers both an authentic and charismatic performance as Rod Stewart; from the distinctive vocals to the swaggering showmanship and sheer fun that has made Rod one of the most loved performers of all time. Paul says: “I absolutely love it and I feel very lucky that other people seem to love it as well. When I’m onstage I go into another world and do things I wouldn’t normally dream of doing. The show has come on massively since we started. The music, the lighting, the set and the video backdrops have all come on a lot. Fortunately, the audience seem to agree.”
‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’ charts Rod Stewart’s career chronologically and highlights some of the significant strokes of luck which helped the rock legend during his stellar career. The show also features songs from Rod Stewart’s time with ‘The Faces’ as well as a full concert production in the second half of the show with classic hits including Maggie May, Baby Jane, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy, Sailing and You’re in My Heart. Paul says: “I think Rod’s music brings back a lot of memories for people, and everyone can remember the first time they heard Maggie May. Rod has such an amazing back catalogue of songs and such variety as well. Wonderful ballads, joyful upbeat songs and some great rockers as well.” We all make our own luck, but some guys really do have it all!

A POP-UP PALACE OF CULTURE TO OPEN IN ENFIELD TOWN A pop-up arts and community hub will launch in Enfield Town this autumn while the Dugdale Centre is used as an NHS COVID-19 vaccination centre. The Culture Palace inside Palace Gardens shopping centre will be a temporary, cultural playhouse that will host exhibitions, theatre, children’s books, art activities, workshops, a mindfulness café and much more. Enfield Council will bring together the expertise of the Dugdale Centre, the Museum of Enfield and EnFood into the Culture Palace. In addition, Pickled Pepper Books, a North London independent creative business comprising a children’s bookshop and theatre and events company will also use the space. The Culture Palace is scheduled to open in September 2021. Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Ian Barnes, said: “Enfield Council’s Cultural Strategy identifies opportunities to harness all the potential the borough has to offer, to build on existing provisions and to work collaboratively to generate new initiatives. Theatres, museums, libraries and art centres support our local economy, bring character to our town centres and connect and educate 26

communities. This is a fantastic collaboration with Palace Gardens, to whom we’d like to extend our thanks for hosting this as the first of a series of culture and community pop-ups. “We have been proud to support the NHS COVID-19 vaccination efforts and are thrilled the Dugdale has welcomed more than 35,000 people to be vaccinated over the last few months. But we are also looking forward to the Dugdale Centre reopening as the borough’s beloved cultural hub in Spring 2022.” Palace Gardens will also host a popup from Edmonton-based Artist Hive Studios. This pop-up – called Field – will bring in a range of artists to work on site, with a shopfront gallery space and a range of workshops and activities. Field and the Culture Palace will work together on special events and activities to get people from across Enfield involved in amazing arts experiences. This builds on the recent exhibition

of artists’ work via a public art trail of poster sites across the borough curated by Artist Hive Studios and @ fromstudiolockdown, with support from Enfield Council. Paul Duke, Palace Gardens centre manager, said: “We are very excited to be hosting the Culture Palace at Palace Gardens this Autumn. Our shoppers are sure to find lots of great things to see and do.
Palace Gardens so much that they will keep coming back to see what else there is and what’s new.” The Culture Palace builds upon the Council’s efforts to showcase arts, heritage and culture to the community. The Museum of Enfield is currently touring an exhibition From Enfield to Fork, which explores the borough’s food heritage.
“We expect visitors will enjoy their time at the arts and community hub in
