The packed programme of events curated by Enfield Council reflects the diverse and dynamic communities of Enfield and their amazing achievements. “This Black History Month will also be a time for reflection. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION… Big Narstie, Sissy Lea and Abena The Actress in the heart of Edmonton Green Shopping Centre helping to raise funds for local charity and GOSH

On 4th September the stage was set for charity at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre with a talent show of young people entertaining the crowd, cheered on by Big Narstie, actress Abena The Actress and local superstar Sissy Lea. The annual fun raising event, One Great Day, took place at shopping centres up and down the country in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and local charities. The team at Edmonton 8

Green chose to support Youth & Community Connexions (NYCC), an onsite charity supporting local young people as well as the wider community. From 11am to 4pm on Saturday 4th September, families were spoilt for choice with carousel rides, face painting, meeting superheroes and a full-on talent show. All proceeds made during the day were split between Youth & Community Connexions and GOSH. To top it all www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

off, Crosstree Real Estate Partners (Crosstree), owners of Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, have matched all funds raised so each charity gets an even bigger portion! Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, said, “It was such a wonderful atmosphere and we are so proud to have been a part of this. Supporting the local community is something we strongly believe in and we are over the moon with the money we raised on the day. Crosstree’s generous donation has meant that both charities will receive £706.16 and knowing that locally this will go towards the learning hub for NYCC means a lot to all of us involved.” Cynthia Cobourn, Director of NYCC, said, “This weekend was something

the team were all looking forward to for a while and I couldn’t be prouder of all those involved. A great day was really had by all and we were able to raise funds and awareness in the process. “We are so grateful to everyone that came to support us on the day and help us raise the much-needed funds. And thank you Crosstree for the additional donation. We are blown away.” Rebecca continued, “It really felt emotional being involved in this event and every time we get the community together in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, I am truly filled with so much pride. Community for us is what it is all about. Keep your eyes peeled for what we have throughout the year!”

The team at Edmonton Green are working hard to continue their summer success of events and will be keeping us on our toes with even more events scheduled throughout the year. Keep an eye on the website, follow them on social media or request to receive the monthly newsletter for updates.

THE VOICES OF BLACK FOLK: IN UNEXPECTED PLACES A play written and directed by Khareem Jamal

Africology Productions is pleased to announce ‘The Voices of Black Folk: In Unexpected Places’. The latest installment in their ‘Voices of Black Folk’ series dedicated to shining a light on the forgotten rich history of black voices across the UK and Europe. Written and directed by Khareem Jamal, (playwright of Black Heroes In the Hall Of Fame and The Abolitionist), ‘The Voices of Black Folk: In Unexpected Places’ shares with us the fascinating lives of Septimius Severus, Queen 12

Edmonton Green Magazine | #16

Philippa of Hainault, Ottobah Coguano and Joseph Bolgone all who pop up in history in places we wouldn’t expect such as the Roman empire, the British Royal family and the French Revolution. Delving deep into our history, we learn about the true character of black leaders such as Septimius Severus, played by Lloyd Reid, who was an African emperor of Rome, who campaigned in northern Britain in an attempt to subdue the Scots and expand the empire, and who for a short period made the city of York the de www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

facto capital of the Roman empire. We learn about Queen Philippa of Hainault, played by Misie Goode, who thanks to Netflix’s ‘Bridgeton’, has surfaced more prominently as a previous member of the British royal family. Married to King Edward III in 1328, Queen Philippa bore him thirteen children and in so doing sowed the seeds of discontent among the Plantagenets that would lead to the Wars of The Roses- a series of civil wars fought over control of the English throne in the mid-to-late fifteenth century. The story of Ottobah Coguano is also told. Played by Tosin Olomowewe, Ottobah was a former slave turned abolitionist and political activist who was kidnapped at the age of 13 from the ‘Gold Coast’ and taken to the Caribbean. Purchased by a British merchant, he was brought to England and eventually given his freedom. Ottobah made London his home and fought tirelessly for the “immediate” abandonment of the evil institution of slavery, becoming the first African to be published in English. His book, ‘Thoughts and Sentiments of The Wicked Traffic Of The Slavery And Commerce Of the Human Species’ (1787) caused a sensation with its unapologetic demand for abolition. Lastly, we learn of the irrepressible genius that was Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, played by Mico Simonde, a man with many talents, who was a French

classical composer, virtuoso violinist, a conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris, a renowned champion fencer and an anti-slavery abolitionist and commander of his own regiment in the French Revolution ‘the Légion nationale des Américains & du midi’- the first all-black regiment in modern European history. This is show for all the family, book your tickets today for an experience that is both entertaining and educational and not to be missed!

‘The Voices of Black Folk: In Unexpected Places’ is showing in London on 8th and 9th October at Theatre Peckham; 20th and 21st October at Millfield Theatre and in Birmingham on 14th and 15th October at the Crescent Theatre.

service in more details can also be found on Enfield Council’s YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/xs8Za1ZzBz4 Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Rick Jewell said: “This Council wants to make Enfield a fairer place to live and has recognised that many families are still living with financial challenges brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, some residents do not have the means to access the current bulky waste service or are unable to visit Barrowell

www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Cllr Jewell added: “While I am very pleased that we are able to offer this service to residents, I want to emphasise that we will continue to investigate and prosecute people who dump waste. While there has never, ever been a good reason for fly-tipping, there really is no excuse now. Be warned.”

Green with their items. “By making these changes, we will deliver an improved service offer for all the residents of the borough. It will ensure that all residents can dispose of their bulky waste easily and consistently. At the same time, it’s important to remember to repair and reuse where possible and dispose of all waste appropriately.” While electrical items cannot be picked up by the Council’s team without a small charge, free electrical collections

are provided by Clearabee. In addition, good quality furniture and white goods can still be collected by the charity, British Heart Foundation. Barrowell Green is currently open every day apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. To ensure there is no abuse of the system - for example those undertaking regular house clearances - the service will monitor closely individuals’ booking requests.

PEERS SUPPORTING THEIR PEERS - YOUNG PEOPLE GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Seeing young people taking a stand to help others and realise the importance of community is really uplifting and this is precisely what has happened recently in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. Seeing young people taking a stand to help others and realise the importance of community is really uplifting and this is precisely what has happened recently in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. As part of the Summer University, local art company Doodle Designs held a summer art workshop for ten young people within Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. The Management team at the Shopping Centre wanted to do their bit to help and waived the hire fee and asked the young people to donate it to a charity of their choice. Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, said, “Community plays a massive role for all of us here in the shopping centre. If there is a way we can help and enhance the community then we absolutely will. When Christina approached us to hire the room and she told us about the workshop, we couldn’t help but ask her to put the hire fee to a good cause.

16

Edmonton Green Magazine | #16

“BASE is a great organisation that is currently renovating a space within the Shopping Centre and I know this donation will be of a great help to them.” Christina Kalinowski, owner of Doodle Designs, who facilitated the workshop, said, “When Rebecca kindly told us to donate the room hire fee to a charity of our choice, I discussed this with the class and it was apparent that they all wanted to support their peers within Edmonton. Most of the participants were from outside of Edmonton so having been given a tour and brainstorming ideas, community was something that they all felt very strongly about.” They went about doing some research and they were all keen to support a food bank. They came across BASE (Build Achieve Support Empower), an Edmonton based not for profit organisation, that started in September

2019 supporting five families locally. The organisation aims to reduce child poverty, gang activity and social isolation within the community and supplies food to a massive 400 families weekly from their own allotment and various other sources. Christina continued, “They came across BASE and are so happy that they’ve been able to help in some way. I couldn’t be happier to support Candice and her team. It is all about giving back to our community in some shape or form.”

Candice McDonald, CEO and founder of BASE, speaks highly of the management staff of Edmonton Green Shopping Centre and of the young people that took part in the Summer University. “We are truly grateful to all involved for their generosity. Being fully self-funded means that this is an absolute God send for us. We have been working had for the past six months to create a music studio for some of the young people we support and this money has totally come at the right time for us.”

NEW COMMUNITY PANTRY OPENS AT EDMONTON GREEN LIBRARY Enfield Council officially opened their first community food pantry at Edmonton Green Library this week.

Enfield Council officially opened their first community food pantry at Edmonton Green Library this week. The pantry is to primarily tackle food poverty and offers nutritious food at heavily discounted prices to residents facing food hardship, away from a complete dependency on foodbanks. Cllr Nesil Caliskan, Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Mary Maguire, Cabinet Member for Finance and Procurement and Ian Davis, Chief Executive at Enfield Council cut the ribbon to declare the pantry open. The pantry is part of the community hub 20

at Edmonton Green Library and not only provides cheaper and subsidised food but promotes healthy eating by stocking food that is high in nutrition. Edmonton Green is the first in a line of other pantries managed by the council that will be opened in the near future in the borough. It was primarily developed to address food poverty, as it offers a much more affordable alternative to the mainstream options offered by supermarkets and other food vendors. A community food pantry is a social supermarket. Pantries differ from food banks because food is bought rather www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

than given away, therefore they typically aim to help prevent people from reaching an emergency situation. Users are referred via the Council’s Welfare and Debt Advisory Team, following an assessment of their needs. The focus is on how best to support the users using both council services, partners and voluntary and community sector organisations. Pantry users will pay £4.50 a week and will be able to purchase the equivalent of approximately £20 worth of food. The aim is also to identify needs such as debt crisis, homelessness, social isolation and family related issues. There is a strong connection between poverty and obesity and other public health issues faced by residents living in poorer areas. The pantry, which has been made possible with extensive support from the council’s Public Health department, also offers its users support such as access to welfare, debt management and employment and skills training. The Edmonton area was chosen as the first community pantry location, after research revealed that residents living in the area are most in need of help and support. Council staff will refer residents for time-limited membership following an assessment of their needs, so that a plan can be developed together and managed jointly until the resident is back on their feet.

Cllr Mary Maguire, Cabinet Member for Finance and Procurement at Enfield Council, said: “I am pleased that the first community pantry has opened its doors to residents in Edmonton, who are most in need of our help and support. “The general ethos of a pantry is to give a hand up, not a handout, as we help those with the most complex needs in our local communities. “By establishing dedicated community hubs located within libraries, we are enabling residents, particularly those with more complex needs, to access integrated support in one place.”

The community pantry will be open on Tuesdays from 1pm-3pm and Wednesdays from 10am-12noon and 1pm-3pm. For further information on community pantries, email thepantry@enfield.gov.uk
