WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? I like to work with kids; they are very lovely to me.
AND THE WORST THING?
The worst about my job are the drivers; some of them aren’t good to me and abuse me. However, I don’t take notice as it is part of my job. Rather, they should be more respectful as I am helping the kids cross the road safely so they can go to school. But unfortunately, they are very rude. Once, one driver threw a bottle of water on me, luckily, it was a plastic bottle because if were a glass bottle it could have hurt me.
HOW IMPORTANT YOU THINK YOUR WORK IS?
I think my work is very important because I help the kids otherwise it would be hard for them because of the heavy traffic.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A LOLLIPOP LADY?
I used to be a Lollipop Lady before but I had to stop because my daughter was little and I don’t have anybody to look after her. But now that she’s bigger I have started to work again. I love to work with kids! edmontongreenmag.co.uk

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Definitely children and parents! Some drivers are fine but I do also get a lot of abuse.
AND THE WORST THING?
Some drivers they don’t like to wait. Once a driver said that he will cut my throat! I have also been run over by one of the moms in the school. One thing that is very worrying is that the drivers are always on their phones, and they don’t see me. If I had a pound for every time someone said to me, “Sorry, I didn’t see you!” I’ll be a millionaire by now!

HOW IMPORTANT YOU THINK YOUR WORK IS?
If I was not here helping parents and children cross the road, they would take a lot of time to cross on they own. I have been promised to have a speed camera, and also a hump in the road I work to slow down the drivers as they always come “flying”.

PARENTS AND CARERS: If you are crossing the road, and bringing your children to school, please put your phone down for a second. Be more vigilant, children can suddenly run and I’ve seen some accidents happen only because the parent was on phone.
DRIVERS: When you come to crossings with Lollypop Ladies you need to be more careful, more vigilant and look both ways.

Psychological:
Sports psychology is also a fundamental part of a footballers lifestyle. Having a strong mentality is a vital part throughout the game, whether it is whilst playing or after a game. Footballers have to go through different emotions and make hundreds of decisions in a short period, and because of this we will provide the players with a visit from a sports psychologist to gain experience from a professional in the game. We have a variety of coaches from Level 1 to Uefa B and all coaches have a belief in the ASA way of playing and are not only coaches, but also mentors and role models to Players and Parents alike.
| EDMONTON GREEN | MAY 2017
Nutrition:
We promise to provide bespoke diet and nutrition plans to each player to aid their development and will have nutritional professionals coming down to talk to the players and give presentations on best practise. We will also provide sports nutrition throughout and after games to coincide with the atmosphere and targets we give to the players.

What do you think is more important to your child’s success at school – how much education you have had or how much you earn? In fact, it’s neither of these. Far more important is your engagement with your child; the more involved you are, the better your child will feel about his or her learning. Sometimes, though, that’s easier than it sounds. If you had poor experiences at school, if you are new to the English school system or if you have never attended school yourself, how do you get do this?

education
Below are some tips to help parents and carers: Be positive about education show that you value learning and be enthusiastic, asking questions about what they have done at school that day.
Encourage your child to read
Research has shown that children who read more grow up to be more successful adults. Take your child to the library, whether that’s local or in school.
Eat healthily and ensure tey are sleeping properly
Make sure that your child has a proper breakfast. This will help your child to concentrate and give them more energy. Children need 11 hours’ sleep at age 5 and 9 ½ hours at age 11.
Get to know your child’s teacher There will probably be more than one adult working with your child. Introduce yourself and don’t be afraid to say if there are language barriers.
22
| EDMONTON GREEN | MAY 2017
Talk to your child
put your mobile phone down when you walk them to and from school. Young children who aren’t talked to can have problems with language skills and reading.
Appreciate their achievements
Provide constructive feedback, thinking about the language you are using. Praise them and let them know that you’re proud of them.

Join the school’s parent group
There will be many different ways you can contribute, including volunteering in school, helping on trips and making cakes for any fundraising sales.
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
encourage your child’s independence
Teach them time-management and organisational skills. Help them to dress themselves, make sure they can do up zips and buttons, use a knife and fork, go to the toilet on their own and follow basic instructions.
Attend parent consulations
These normally take place two to three times a year. Schools may be able to provide an interpreter if you are struggling with English. Find out how well your child is doing compared to other pupils. If you can’t make the meeting or you have a more pressing concern, arrange to meet with the class teacher or to speak on the phone.
Support your child with his or her homework
But don’t do it for them! Set aside time each evening for this – there won’t be homework for every night, but your child should be reading every day. Remove any distractions.
Do things together out of school Think about how you can support your child’s learning. There is so much in London that is on our doorstep and is free. Take them into the centre, walk by the river and identify buildings, visit museums.
Stay in touch
Make sure you ask your child to pass on any communications from the school. Read the newsletter and check the website. Look at for notices on the classroom/at the school gates. Try to attend any events at the school.
Ask questions
if you are concerned about anything, whether it’s learning, homework, reading or bullying, ask an adult at the school.

Time TO Change It’s hard to believe that some years ago Jenny, was a recluse, ashamed to go out because of her size. Here she explains how she lost weight and found her inner confidence When did you decide it was time to change? When it comes to change it’s either a crisis or choice or a push. For me there were two significant aspects of my life that triggered the change: I was very unhappy because I had reached a point where I couldn’t get any clothes as nothing would fit me. I got so big that I was almost 25st and I wore dress size 32. I couldn’t find any clothes in the shops. Of course being overweight adversely impacts your social life you don’t want to go out, you don’t feel motivated to go to parties and you don’t feel good about yourself. The second aspect was that I was working and that was all I did. I
24

was a really dedicated teacher. I used to arrive at work early every day and leave very late. That was my life. I was unhappy as I didn’t have a balance in my life. When my stepfather died, that kind of brought everything into place and I started to ask myself, “What is the meaning of life? Are you happy?” And also I thought about my mother, the fact that now she will be alone. I couldn’t be with her when she needed me most, as I was working all the time I didn’t even have time to see her. Definitely, it was time for me to lose weight and gain control over my life.
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Can you tell us more about how you started? The first thing I did, I went to a boot camp, I lost one stone in a week, but that cost me more than a thousand pounds and I still needed to lose more 12 stones and I didn’t have the money to do it. When I came back I looked for the Cambridge weight plan and lost weight using this plan. But I still needed to change my lifestyle to be able to spend more time with my mom and my family and do the things I wanted to do. I lost weight; I gained confidence, left my job to become a Cambridge Consultant. Now I support other people in making the same life-changing decisions. Because I was successfully able to bring about a change in my life towards a better living, it gave me the motivation to support other people in losing weight and make changes in their lives. It’s not just about the weight, it is about how you perceive yourself, and the way you see yourself places you in the context of everything else in your life, whether is work, relationships, community and so on.

What was hard for you? It was hard for me to find something to keep me motivated and remind myself of why I set up this goal in the first place. Often we beat ourselves up and blame ourselves saying, “I can’t do it” Something is wrong with me.”It is really important to start loving yourself and accepting yourself in entirety. You have achieved your goals and changed your lifestyle. What does this mean for you now? I am a happier person than I was when I started this journey. I have more flexibility in my life, I have got more roses in my life I’m more fulfilled and now that I am able to support and help other people towards a better life and I get a lot of satisfaction out of that. Leave a message for our readers: Gratitude is important, gratitude for what you have, gratitude for simple things like sitting in a park with the sunshine in your face or spending time with somebody you love, don’t moan because of the kind of person they are or if you have an argument with this person. We all need bread but we need our roses as well. Find the little roses in your life.

5 tips to improve your lifestyle: Think about what you want to achieve and set your goals If you want to make a change - the first thing you have to do is to set your goal and work hard towards it because it’s very easy to get distracted and give up. Let go of your regrets My best advice is to let things go: if you ate a chocolate bar yesterday, it was yesterday, today is another day. Try to live a well-balanced life Losing weight is not only about what you eat, it’s how you live your life. Face your fears If you want to change start now, do not procrastinate and say, “I will star tomorrow”. Start today! Accept yourself Change takes time because we have learned our habits, bad and good. In order to change the bad ones, we need to allow ourselves time.

Interview
When did you decide to take part in the Youth Talent Contest? I decided to participate in Breakout in 2015 after watching the show the year before. I really struggled with confidence and I was curious to see whether I was good enough to get through. When I came in 3rd I became motivated to start uploading more frequently on my YouTube channel (Ellie Marie Music).
Ellie performing at Youth Talent Contest 2016 When did you start your career? In fact, singing isn’t my career, I am currently working in a school for children with special educational needs and I love it! I have been working there for about two years now. Who or what inspires you? As cliché, as it may sound Music, inspires me. I love discovering artists that maybe haven’t yet made it to fame, and watching them grow with their music. This inspires me to try harder and make more music. Emeli Sande has inspired me a lot; she has helped me figure out the kind of singer I want to be. 38
| EDMONTON GREEN | MAY 2017
What did it mean for you to win the contest? Honestly, I wasn’t focused on winning. I really love the experience and atmosphere of Breakout. You get the opportunity to interact with like-minded people and the people who you come across are so kind that at times you completely forget that it’s a competition. However my face was priceless when I heard that I came 1st, I was so surprised! Advice for next competitors? If you’re the type of person to get stressed really easily (like me) then do make sure you know exactly what you’re doing, and give yourself enough time to practice. But most importantly have fun! Talk to the other contestants, get to know them and the best thing is not to think of it as a competition, enter thinking of it as an experience! What are you currently doing? I am currently working on my YouTube channel, recording songs and different music related videos. I would really love my channel to start growing so that I can use it as a platform to encourage young people like myself. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
“
There is a quote that I have stood by for years and it makes so much sense when you think about it: ‘the struggle you face today, will give you the strength you need for tomorrow.’ If ever I’ve had a bad day, I remember this quote and it motivates me to stay strong and do what I need to do.
”
#
Favourite music style? I listen to many different styles of music so its hard to pick my favourite. I think it depends on what mood I’m in.
#
Do you play any instrument? I am currently practicing Guitar, and as I’m teaching myself, I’m not as good as I want to be yet. Favourite song? My current favourite song is ‘If this is Love’ by Ruth B. Favourite female singer? My favourite female singer has to be Emeli Sande. Every single one of her songs has such meaningful lyrics and a unique worth, and she shares it with so much grace. Favourite male singer? Ed Sheehan! The way he can entertain an entire arena of an audience with just himself and a guitar is amazing! He speaks about so many truths in his songs. My favourite song of his is “A Team.” It’s just such a real song. edmontongreenmag.co.uk

RUNNING WITH THE VISION YOUTH FOOTBALL started in 1999 and has weekly Saturday training sessions. Having the same ethos as the boxing club is uses sport as a vehicle to promote character, respect and well-being. It was a Kick It Out flagship community project for its work in tackling racism and building unity amongst young people of all backgrounds, faiths and cultures. As well as the weekly sessions, they organise matches against other clubs and a yearly tournament.
THE SIGN POST PROJECT was born out of a commitment to reach out to those on the margins of our community to help support them in sourcing the food, housing, benefits and emotional support they need. With our current resources we are able to provide a home cooked meal once a week plus, a monthly breakfast club for approximately 45 local people and numbers are increasing steadily. With a strong team of dedicated volunteers we also offer a free haircutting service, clothing, bedding and a local authority run organisation attends regularly to offer short medical consultations and advice on registering with a local doctor, etc.
