alliard Primary School in Edmonton held a huge celebration of parades, dancing, music and displays to celebrate their opening 80 years ago in 1937. edmontongreenmag.co.uk

As part of the celebration, the school hosted a ‘Dance Festival’ with other Edmonton schools: West Lea, Wilbury, Fleecefield and St Edmund’s. The children (and a staff group!) performed maypole dances on the school field and sang some traditional songs to guests from the local community, including old pupils from the school. There was also be a special celebration of the history of the school with displays in classrooms, special photographic exhibitions and an enthralling 1930s classroom. Galliard Infant and Junior Schools opened on the 6th March 1937, then in 1985 the two schools joined as Galliard Primary School. So much has happened to the school during its 80 years. Two years after the school opened World War Two started and children were evacuated first to Witham in Essex and then to Bicester in Oxfordshire.

| EDMONTON GREEN | JUN 2017
The children returned home to Edmonton and to school when an underground air raid shelter was built under Galliard’s playing field. When the air raid sirens sounded, the children found protection there. School life then continued, with Galliard growing in size as new classes were built and an Early Years building was added. The Headteacher of Galliard School, Penny Sullivan, said “Galliard is a school with a rich history. “During preparations for our 80th anniversary both staff and children have been fascinated with what they have found out about the education of a child from the 1930s to the present day. It has been especially interesting to talk to old pupils about their experiences as so much has changed in education. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
“To the hundreds of staff, governors, helpers, and to the thousands of children and parents who have played their part in the history of Galliard, we would like to send our grateful thanks.” Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services & Protection, Cllr Ayfer Orhan, said “It’s difficult to appreciate what life must have been like for children in 1937 who entered school for the first time. “Compulsory education ended when they were 14, and for the majority, that meant they had to find jobs. Now children are encouraged to continue in education until they are 18, and many of today’s pupils will go to university, something that the first Galliard School pupils would have only dreamed about. “I was delighted to join in with their wonderful celebrations and I wish them the best for the future.” On Wednesday 5 July at 4.00pm Galliard is holding an open evening to look around the school and to celebrate their 80 years. If any former pupils can attend, please contact Mrs Berman at the School Office on 0208 443 9539. source: Enfield Council edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Men’s Health
MEN’S HEALTH WEEK 2017 12-18 June This year will be focused on belly fat. Why? Because it’s the type of fat that’s bad for your health and men are more likely to have it. With this in mind, we interviewed Jeff, a 47 year-old personal trainer. How long have you been training? I have been training as a qualified personal trainer for 9 months but have been training for 5 years in all. I have always offered advice and tips to others, as I am so passionate about training. Being fully qualified means I can offer professional advice, which enables clients to do so much more, when they workout. Tell us why you started. I started because of health reasons. Both my parents had diabetes; so, taking care of my health was the main priority. Having excellent knowledge enables me to be successful in my goals and also give clients the best service I can. Nowadays, there are so many places that you can learn to be a P.T.; but I have known my old tutor for a long time and it felt good to be taught by a professional.

What are the first changes you noticed in your body and wellbeing/lifestyle? The initial changes were in muscle growth and body shape. Within a few weeks,, I could see changes and even today I can see changes on a regular basis . When you notice muscle development, it can give you the impetus to carry on with more vigour . It’s not just physical change that inspires. Mentally, I feel a lot happier, because I can feel the difference exercising makes. I am stronger, fitter, more confident and my energy levels are always high. All this is due to working out. Good, nutritious, food and rest are also vital components. It keeps you looking and feeling younger too. Surely that’s not a bad thing!

Men’s Health
What motivates you? Knowing the substantial physical and mental benefits of training inspires me to keep going. I do believe I will be as passionate about training in 20 years’ time, as I am now. I see no reason to stop and being able to share knowledge is a wonderful thing. I get inspired by inspiring others. I am lucky to be doing what I do to the level I do it but it’s through hard work and determination. If you want it, you have to go get it! Seeing adults the same age as I am, who are unhealthy and actually look older, also makes me want to keep going. I am proud of my body’s development and never want to let myself go to seed like so many others . I will not give up and resign my later years to bad health and being overweight. I am going to fight Mother Nature all the way!

Can you list some workout mistakes that will stop you from getting in shape? I see a lot of people making exercise mistakes in the gym. One thing I hate to see is when people lock their knees on the leg press. This is damaging to the knee joints and will lead to injury problems later on. I tell this to at least five people a week at my gym, when I see them doing it. People don’t know how to do the exercises correctly, mainly due to lack of knowledge. 9095% of gym goers get their form and breathing wrong. It is so important to get your technique right. Otherwise it is well-nigh impossible to develop muscle properly and easy to get injuries. Another area of mistake for gym goers is their nutrition. I can do 5 hours every day in the gym, but if my nutrition is not good, then results are again very hard to attain. When people get disheartened by bad results they normally give up. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
If you had one piece of advice to someone who thinks: “gym/training/workout is not for me”, what would it be? If anyone feels that gym is not for them, then the best thing I advise is to talk to a professionally qualified trainer. You could be just a few changes away from getting good results; so even a few sessions will put you on the right track and keep you motivated. I fully understand the benefits of exercise both mentally and physically and I urge you never to give up. Learn more about exercise and nutrition and see the difference. It does work, if done properly.

Express yourself through dance! Hotsteppers Dance Studios aim to make dance accessible for everyone
Hotsteppers Dance Studios was founded by sisters Hayley and Cydney. The enthusiasm in the benefits which come from teaching dance to kids, was their inspiration for starting the company. The focus of the school was to make dance accessible to everyone. Since opening the school in 2010, we have quickly become a popular dance school for children aged 3 years and upwards.

At Hotsteppers, we offer a fun a vibrant teaching style and are committed in helping the students reach their full potential in a positive and encouraging environment. Dance is a great way to keep active, build confidence, make friends and find hidden talents. All students are given the opportunity to take part in our annual show as well as local events and competitions.Â
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Dance helps to develop essential social skills through interaction with other students and has been proven to nurture important life skills, such as discipline and focus. With everything that is going on in the world and the rise in knife crime recently within the borough, there is no better time to enrol your child in a dance class. The lessons they learn will last a lifetime.

“I have been attending the dance class for over 6 years and I feel like it’s my second family, because of how much I have bonded with them. The teachers and students are really amazing and help you in times of need, making you feel welcome. We work hard as a class and our treats are the shows we do at the end of the each year, which are amazing because of the hard and funfilled work we put in.”
Jakub
“I have been at dance for about a year and I really enjoy it. My favourite part is performing and making new friends. I have met a lot of new people doing this and I have become really close with my dance group. I really like my teacher. She is great at bringing out our potentials as individuals and as a group.”
Amelia
“I have been with Hotsteppers since the day they opened. I love to dance with everyone, as we are like a family. Hayley and Cydney are the best dance teachers and without them I wouldn’t be the dancer I am today.”

“I began dancing when I was 6 years old. I trained at a local dance school where I took regular weekly classes in dance, drama and singing. I was given the opportunity to take exams and perform at local theatres as well as the West End. I became a bit rebellious in my early teens. However, I strongly believe that dance was the positive influence I needed, and it helped me through many challenges I faced growing up. This is why I am so passionate to share my experience and knowledge with the youth of today. Having a passion and something to look forward to is so important.”

edmontongreenmag.co.uk
You paint on a number of different themes- animals, images from London, people from your life. Which ones are your favourites, and why? Which ones are the hardest, which the most rewarding?
I have been described as versatile, in style and subject matter. The reason for this is that I like to push myself out of my comfort zones. Each subject has its own challenges. The most difficult I would say is portraiture, of which I do a lot on commission, but the best ones are the paintings of my children, as they are the perfect subjects to practise on. I am very inspired by the natural world, animals, wildlife and even plants. Cityscapes are hugely rewarding, especially if rendered in a looser style of painting, which I have yet to achieve! It is important to me to be able to paint and draw anything; that is how I have taught myself.
What is it that inspires you to paint what you paint?
I am extremely visual in my thinking, and this can be painful. I see so much and so much beauty even in simplicity. I can watch a dragonfly sitting on my washing line and that will elicit three visuals of pieces I need to create featuring dragonflies. There is such a long list of artworks I want to create, that I wonder if there is enough time left in my life to do so. I take photographs of just about everything I can, just to see if I can transfer the moment I captured onto canvas.
Where can people see more of your work?
I can be found on Facebook and Twitter, where any updates of exhibitions will be posted, in addition to what I am working on currently.
Anything else you’d like to share?
What do you hope viewers Being creative doesn’t just mean would take away from your painting and drawing, creative thinking is massively important. Creative paintings? I hope viewers will take away a positive feeling, make an emotional connection and appreciate the skill involved. I am never more pleased as I am when my work inspires someone else to pick up a brush, or pen or pencil or something and create. Inspiration is a wonderful thing to give. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
thinking solves problems, inspires and nurtures people. Finding a creative streak pulled me out of a really dark place and I encourage everyone to find a creative pursuit! There is a spark of creation and innovation in every one: you just have to dig deep into yourself to find it and when you do find it, you have to nurture the spark till it becomes a flame and eventually, a roaring fire! The ‘Belonging’ Project Samantha is currently working with Scarabeus, an aerial production team on the years 5 and 6 end of year show at Keys Meadow School. The story line focuses on the journey of a refugee family into England and how they have to adapt, change and come to belong in a new society. Her role as the Artist is to create butterflies, among other props, as well as having a key role in working with a group of children in creating butterflies of their own.
“We explore different mediums and the symbolism of the life cycle of the butterfly incorporating those ideas to fit in with our production. The children have the opportunity to express their individuality whilst working as a whole team.” 28

Motivation
By Jennifer Barker Weight loss consultant At North London Weight Loss Centre
Get motivated to get Summer is here you have promised yourself to get fit and lose weight. You really mean it. For the next three days, you eat salads, jog and go to the gym, Then, you are on the sofa with a tub of ice cream. Sounds familiar? It’s time to throw regret aside and get motivated. If you put your mind to it, you can avoid the yo-yo of start and stop and turn it into a ‘you look and feel great’! Here is how! 30
| EDMONTON GREEN | JUN 2017
Getting fitter is a three-part process: Exercising and reducing your calories are important. But your frame of mind can mean the difference between success and failure.
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Make a list
Start by listing all the reasons you can think of for getting fit. Rewrite any reasons that include other people. Change statements of “have to” into a “want to.” Find two or three of the most compelling motivations. You probably have lots of reasons for wanting to get fit. Some may be good ones. The best reasons are for yourself and how it will improve your life.
Set achievable goals
Think smaller. Studies have shown that some dieters expect to lose as much as four times what they really can in month. They will often over do themselves with workouts in the gym and burn out soon after starting. Keep your goals small and achievable. Count on losing around 2lb a week and doing moderate exercise of 30 minutes.
Don't just rely on the numbers
A number on the scale isn’t a goal; it’s a measurement of success. Instead, focus on your lifestyle you wish to change. For example you may want to increase your vegetable intake, reduce fat in your diet or walk to the local shops instead of using the car.

Get the right attitude
It’s important to have the right attitude before you start your plan. Self defeating thoughts are often what gets in the way. You feel let down when you give in to your cravings for ice cream. If you’re really serious about getting fitter and thinner you need to think long-term. Get your head ready to take on the challenge. This is important if you are going to stick to it. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
