The green was visited by the Mayor of Enfield along with the Leader of the Council and special guests including the children of St. Edmund’s Catholic Primary School of the Hertford Road, who helped to plant shrubs, flowers and other greenery. The open space complements one of Edmonton’s most beautiful and historically significant residential area. The land forms part of The Crescent Conservation Area in Edmonton, where Grade II listed buildings from the early 19 century form a crescent of terraced four-storey houses, unique in Enfield. Enfield Council’s Leader, Cllr Doug Taylor, said: “This wonderful, public space complements the recent Council-led improvements to The Crescent to both private properties and those owned by our project partners Newlon Housing Trust.

“The main triumph of this regeneration has been the participation of the community in this project. We want people to have access to green, open spaces and moreover, to have a say as to how their living areas are shaped. Looking ahead, we anticipate further investment into the area which already is a thriving, cosmopolitan place to live, work and be educated in, leading to a strong community focus.” The final design of the space was shaped by the local community during a public consultation which took place during the summer of 2016. There is an arc of trees and curving footpath to mirror the shape of the historic crescent as well as a central paving feature, which will include an engraving taken from novelist and journalist Daniel Defoe’s writing about the area. The project is designed to sustainably manage rainwater by allowing it to run off into surrounding flowerbeds. The flowers have been specially chosen to encourage bees and butterflies to visit the area. The gardening club of St. Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, comprised of yearfive and year-six students, helped with the planting and will enjoy the area for years to come along with other residents in the area. edmontongreenmag.co.uk
The work at Monmouth Road Green forms part of the Council’s growth and sustainability objective, to attract investment and support sustainable regeneration and growth, as well as to provide residents with access to green, open spaces.

Pymmes House We are fortunate indeed to have Pymmes Park on our doorstep. Procured by the local authority in 1896 and opened in two stages. The Northern section in July 1897 (120 years ago this month) and the Southern section on June 16th 1906. 16

T
he purchase included a mansion that had its roots back as far as the fourteenth century when the land was sold by a William Pymme to, our then Lord of The Manor, Adam Francis. Perhaps the most famous owner was William Cecil, Lord Burghley, chief advisor to Elizabeth 1st who seemingly purchased the estate for his daughter Anne and her new husband Edward De Vere. Unfortunately the marriage had a difficult start and the couple were separated for many years. Cecil’s son Robert spent his honeymoon here and refereed to it as “our little farm”. The Cecils probably rebuilt the house in the late 16th century and retained possession until 1704. Sometime during the eighteenth century the building was refaced and a Georgian portico was added. This was the building that survived until 1940. A succession of owners held Pymmes Estate until the Ray family inherited in early 1800’s. They never lived here but leased it out to wealthy tenants including Sir Henry Tyler, the last tenant, who helped organise the Great Exhibition in 1851 in Hyde Park. edmontongreenmag.co.uk

A
nother Victorian tenant was a Colonel Armitage who along with the headmaster at Latymer school, Vincent Dolbe formed the first Edmonton Cricket Club. There ground was where the lake is now located and the legend says that balls were often hit for six landing on the platform of Silver Street Station. The most colourful resident however was Sayyid Mansur Ali Khan the Nawab of Bengal. He was a cricket fanatic and I like to think he would have played with Armstrong and Dolbe but I can find no evidence. The Nawab’s other hobby was women. He often swanned around London in a “ barouche full of prostitutes”. Sayyid Mansur was descendent of Mir Jafar who was set up as Nawab by Robert Clive after the battle of Plassey. He lived in Edmonton with his English wife Sarah Begum (from Barnet) and they had five children.
The Nawab came to London to appeal to Queen Vic to allow his sons to inherit his kingdom. His endeavours failed and he had to abdicate on a pension of £8,000 (he had wanted £24,000). He secured a pension for his son but not his daughters. Sarah Begum, one of over 20 wives ,was refused a pension by British Government. Mansur Ali Khan sired a total of 101 children of whom 19 sons and 22 daughters survived him, which is both an impressive but sad statistic. When Edmonton Urban District Council acquired the house it was used as a technical college in the early years of 20th century. Then it became a children’s clinic. In WW2 it was commandeered for auxiliary firemen but was burned down in 1940 in a fire unrelated to the war. All that’s left is a walled garden restored in the 1930’s and occasionally open to the public. It was the kitchen garden of the house and if you get the chance do pay it a visit just to see the wonderful Thomas Angell water fountain moved here from Angel Road.

INTERVIEW
When you are busy as a BEE!
Darya Paun, the founder of KidDrop, spoke to us about her innovative project
K
idDrop is a unique community-based platform that connects busy parents and carers to share the load of dropping off and picking up their children to and from nursery, pre-school and school. This share system operates on the basis of exchangeable e-credits that users “earn” and “spend” by helping and being helped by other parents. There is also an option of choosing to leave your child at another child’s parent’s house before and after school/nursery in exchange.

TELL US MORE ABOUT KIDDROP. KidDrop is a first of its kind social networking platform launched in the UK for busy parents. It has only been launched recently and over 500 parents have already signed up and are using the website. The main purpose of KidDrop is to help parents connect to new people at their children’s nurseries, pre-schools or schools and to get to know each other better. This platform will allow parents to meet other parents from not only their child’s class but from all across the school. Then once they meet and get to know each other, parents can start helping out one another with drop offs, pickups and looking after their kids
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
for short periods of time. KidDrop’s aim is too make our communities stronger, which is especially important in the light of the recent events. I believe KidDrop has a huge potential to make the lives of parents and kids in our communities better and easier by promoting mutual trust, strong relationships and an opportunity to help each other. KidDrop also encourages parents to walk their children to school, which will also hopefully ease the overcrowding of cars on the roads leading to the schools, which often makes it dangerous for children to walk (at least this is the case on the roads leading to my son’s school).

INTERVIEW
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CREATE KIDDROP? The idea of a social networking platform for busy parents came to me about a year back when I used to drive my son to his pre-school while tagging my tiny (at the time) daughter with me. She ended up being very tired as a result, and so often I wished I could exchange the task of dropping off and picking up my son with other parents at the pre-school. But everybody was so busy that I only got to meet two mothers during the whole year that my son attended the pre-school. Once I came up with an idea of KidDrop, I had to do some market research, and the parents I spoke to regarding the idea loved the concept. Then an investor, Raj Dhonota, got interested and invested in KidDrop at the concept stage, and now, after a year of hard work, KidDrop has become a reality. It is very important to point out that KidDrop is not a babysitting website. It is a new and unique social networking site for busy parents. So we can all enjoy expanding our circles and helping each other as friends!
22
• EDMONTON GREEN • JUL 2017
WHAT HAS KIDDROP ACHIEVED SO FAR? KidDrop has over 500 users across London in just about 1.5 months of its existence; something I am very proud of. Parents love the concept and the platform and I would like more parents in London and then in the UK to find out about KidDrop and its benefits to our communities, and register and use the platform. We have recently introduced KidFun pages for family-oriented businesses (circuses, theatres, zoo, etc.) to post information about their upcoming events, performances and shows. Parents in turn will be able to search the events by their child’s age and postcode. HOW ARE PEOPLE ENGAGING ON THE WEBSITE AND WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES? The overall aim of KidDrop is to help busy parents get to know other parents in their child’s school or nursery in a quick and efficient way. Once a parent joins a school or nursery community their child is attending, they will be able to see other parents registered in that community.
edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Parents can also post pick up/drop off and babysitting ‘jobs’, and other parents can indicate their interest. Parents are also able to organise birthday parties, school fetes and other events with the help of the website and invite those they would like to invite from their community. And lots more! HOW CAN PEOPLE JOIN? It is fast and easy to join. Once you have provided basic info for registration, an email will be sent to you from KidDrop admin to confirm your email address. Then you will be re-directed to the website www.kiddrop.net and can finalise your profile, which should take no more than a couple of minutes. You are now ready to go and get to know other parents and make new friends!

Michael Ogbole won 2 prizes! One in the Photography competition and the other in the Poetry competition. Well done!
Composed at Midnight by Michael Ogbole, Latymer All Saints Primary School Composed at midnight, a poem I wrote At first in rough, on lines of a note. The night seems cruel, sombre and cold, As weird and sad as a ghoulish soul. Some stay in bed while other leave, Could they be on their way to a midnight shift? Some may have thought they could stand in line, but found of course, they ran out of time. At midnight, stars twinkle in the sky, Seeming somehow, like the end is nigh. Just then day strikes, hurray my friends, we survived the night. The creepy crawlers have taken to flight! The night for now has come to an end, Though soon enough, it comes again... oh fiend! We have come to an end but I’ll see you again... old friends.
The flautist Jacquelyn Hynes accompanied by J Eoin have become firm favourites at the Lamb Festival. A highlight for the song “Mother tongue” played beautifully! The Lamb Festival 2018: Saturday 16th to Friday 22nd June For more information: www.allsaintsedmonton.org.uk edmontongreenmag.co.uk

CONNECTUS @ EDMONTON GREEN Locals get to know what’s on their doorstep This July was the launch of a ground breaking new monthly event.” ConnectUS at Edmonton Green” It is an idea of Jennifer Barker after realising that there was a need to encourage Edmonton Green community to shop local. She felt compelled to make it a reality. Local Community need to know what’s available on their doorstep. Businesses need to show case themselves. Locals and businesses meeting at ConnectUs at Edmonton Green is the solution. Businesses that attended were the featured speakers. They provided an insight to what they could offer to local people. They were able to showcase their businesses. One visitor said that she was so glad that

she came as she did not know that some of these businesses were so close to her and that she is looking forward to the next ConnectUS event.

Local community get to make personal contacts with businesses and hear what is available to them first hand. They gain confidence and trust in the businesses they meet. Business also formed contacts with other businesses in the area. The event struck a chord with a business owner who remarked “we need something like this in Edmonton.” With the motivation from the local community and businesses, this was a great chance to interact, over refreshments in lively uplifting setting on the first floor of Market Square Edmonton Green shopping Centre - it was truly a day to remember.
