RSPCA

EDMONTON CLINIC RSPCA Edmonton Clinic offers a range of preventive health care services such as dog and cat neutering, flea and worm treatment, micro-chipping and vaccinations It is also for pets that have taken ill or are injured.

The clinic also conducts small surgeries such as neutering, lump removals and wound care but is currently fundraising to have a dental machine so its patients can receive dental care as well. For large procedures and dental treatment, patients are 10

currently referred to the RSPCA Harmsworth Hospital in Finsbury Park. One of the areas the clinic focuses on is cat neutering. The UK is currently in a “cat crisis” and charities are being pushed to breaking point trying to care edmontongreenmag.co.uk

for so many unwanted cats. There are simply more cats than homes. To try and help this situation, RSPCA offers free cat neutering and micro-chipping and has recently started a regular open cat neutering clinic where owners do not need to book ahead. They just need to turn up on allocated dates. Having cats neutered is a routine and fairly simple procedure. Both males and females will be up and about that day, and males tend to make a 100% recovery with 24hours. The females tend to feel better within 24hours but they need to have 7-days’ indoor resting to aid healing. There are many health benefits to neutering cats, such as lower risk of feline immunodeficiency virus, mammary tumours and an infected uterus. It also helps prevent cats from fighting and getting nasty cat bite abscesses.

edmontongreenmag.co.uk

The clinic is visited by a different vet every day who come over from the RSPCA Harmsworth Hospital. The vets carry out consultations for sick and injured pets as well as routine appointments such as vaccinations and micro-chipping. They will also perform the surgeries and take samples for testing such as blood and urine. JUL 2017 • EDMONTON GREEN •

"Meatloaf has been very ill, we thought we were going to lose him this year. He was in the hospital as he was not eating or drinking. He was very sick. But now, after the treatment, he has put on some weight. He is happy, and likes to go out all the time. This surgery has been very good for him!”

"Cass had an infection about two weeks ago and now she’s coming to the clinic every week for check-ups after the treatment. “I’ve been coming to this clinic since a long time. Everybody is very friendly, and the treatments are very good. Edmonton Green RSPCA team provide the kind of gentle, friendly, and loving care our pet deserves."

Tales from All Saints Church JOE STUDMAN

The Merry Devil of Edmonton The next time you wander down Church Street have a peek in the graveyard of All Saints Church and notice that the North Wall (facing Church Street) is made of brick whereas the southern wall is of stone.

16

• EDMONTON GREEN • JUL 2017

edmontongreenmag.co.uk

O

n closer inspection of the brick side you’ll notice an arch at ground level which I’ve always presumed to be a window to the crypt (or undercroft). This crypt has not been accessed for decades and no one seems to know where the entrance is or was. It’s a secret waiting to be discovered and I expect local Archaeological Societies would love to discover what mystery lay beneath our parish church. The reason the wall is brick rather than stone goes back to the late eighteenth century when a couple of unscrupulous churchwardens, one a bricklayer the other a carpenter, decided to “improve” the church and line their own pockets at the same time. The carpenter replaced the medieval stone windows with upto date sash versions and the bricklayer faced the wall with his own material. His intention may have been to enclose the whole edifice with brick but fortunately The Bishop of London happened edmontongreenmag.co.uk

to find out about the enterprise and put a stop to further philistinism. In late Victorian times the stone windows were restored as can be seen today but the brick remains. It has worn remarkably well compared to the stone south wall which was only built in 1889 and has had to be repaired on more than one occasion. The North wall has one more story that I love to tell. It concerns a medieval character called Peter Fabell who claimed to have cheated The Devil three times. Fabel made a faustian pact with The Devil. In return for magic powers he would allow Satan to take his soul after seven years. With his new sorcery Peter Fabell created a magic chair and when Lucifer came to claim his spirit at the end of the agreed period he was invited to “take a seat” Fortunately he had been tricked and was unable to move from the devious chair. Fabel only agreeing to release him from it if he granted him another seven years wizardry. Which the Devil reluctantly agreed. JUL 2017 • EDMONTON GREEN •

When Satan returned seven years later to claim his prize he found Fabell writing a letter and he requested that The Devil allow him to continue his epistle until his candle wore out. Our credulous fiend stupidly agreed to the request whereupon Fabel extinguished the taper before any more wax could burn and put it in his pocket. Thus ensuring extended life while no flame was attached to the beacon. A new agreement was reached when our hero promised the devil he could have his soul and

body when he died whether he be buried inside the church or out. When Peter Fabel knew death was approaching he arranged to have his body interred within the very wall of the church thus denying Satan the pleasure of spiriting away the corpse to hell. So Peter Fabell cheated the Devil three times. Of course if he existed he still may be behind those Georgian bricks or perhaps now secure under the church in the mysterious crypt.

ics' their performance of Sinestesia did not disappoint! Wearing ripped dark green clothing the dancers flung themselves into the air, onto the floor and each other, as they filled the space with an abundance of physical movements and energy. Their movements felt mechanical, as though they had been working underground for a long period of time. Emphasising the spontaneity of outdoor arts the group found themselves jumping from the children’s climbing frame, crawling beneath benches and even dancing between the audiences. Quickly swapping between large group unison, solos and duets the audience found themselves fully immersed in their mechanical world for the duration of the performance. On the same day Levantes Dance Theatre opened their Parlour to the public, inviting individuals to a fun make-over and their own photograph.
