Where did the idea come from? It was after watching early Quentin Tarantino films such as Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. The sounds in films where tremendous and after listening to the albums I was automatically drawn to creating this band. How did the band form? Although the band has changed over the years, we have always been very close and a tight-knit group. We have always listened to recommendations and word of mouth when recruiting band members. It gives us a special relationship on stage and ensures the new members are always amazing musicians. What is your favourite song? Now that is a hard question. It will have to be Green Hornet, even though this is very hard to play. It appears in Kill Bill Vol.1. Can you explain what a ‘movie sound bite is’? Of course, this is a really fun ele-

ment to the show! We have taken dialogue, in particular one-liners from the films and worked this into the show. What exactly can audiences expect by ‘re-enactment of scenes’? We have taken great iconic moments from a selection of films and brought them to life for the audience. Adjusting them to fit the show we have fun and play with the much loved scene as we re-enact them live. When everyone is having a great time it can lead to improvised Tarantino fun! Audiences can expect iconic outfits such as the yellow suit from Kill Bill… but don’t worry the talented singer for the band wears it. What can audiences expect? Armed with a variety of tracks from great films performed by incredible musicians with slick choreography, you can expect a party! We bring fun and excitement to the stage.

After his recent passing on 18 August 2017, memories of the special day were in abundance for those involved. On the day, Sir Bruce Forsyth was remembered as being incredibly warm and welcoming. 10

Sir Bruce Forsyth cut the ribbon on the 2.5 million revamp that saw the theatre gain a new bar & kitchen, performance space, toilet block and box office. He sat in the newly named ‘Sir Bruce Forsyth Auditorium’ then watched and danced with the adult tap dancers from Suella Dance Academy who are based at Millfield House.

sir bruce forsyth had a lot time for everyone! he was really interested to talk to those there.

Workmen's Trains JOE STUDMAN

In 1872 a direct line from Liverpool Street to Enfield was opened and a new station known as Lower Edmonton Upper Level was built and this exists today as Edmonton Green. 14

edmontongreenmag.co.uk

I

f you wanted to travel to Edmonton Green from London by train in 1850 you had to board a train at Shoreditch (bound for Stratford), change to a train taking you to Angel Road (then known as Water Lane) and finally take a single track train to Lower Edmonton Station that stood roughly where the War Memorial now stands. You can still follow the route of the track via the footpath behind Asda between Plevna Road and Montagu Road. One of the conditions for allowing the Great Eastern Railway to build a line through North East London was for them to make available cheap workmen’s tickets. This encouraged working class people to move to the then suburbs of Tottenham, Edmonton and Enfield knowing they could retain their jobs in London via an early morning 2d return train ticket. The idea worked and in the last quarter of the nineteenth century the population of Edmonton exploded as speculative builders cashed in on the exodus from the overcrowded capital. edmontongreenmag.co.uk

However the deal involving the 2d workmen’s ticket was that you had to catch a train before 6.30am. Although there were trains from 4.47am the most popular train was the 6.21 which lead to severe congestion at Lower Edmonton. Even catching this train, which arrived at Liverpool Street before seven o’clock, meant that many workers were hanging around for a couple of hours before the working day began. GER maintained the problem could be solved by workmen catching the 6.12 or the 6.17am trains or alternatively take any train up to 8am for a 5 1/2d ticket. The newly formed Workmen’s Train Committee pointed out that the earlier trains arrived at Edmonton ¾ full and that paying 5 ½ d per day was out of their price range. Several meetings were held at Edmonton Town Hall and the workmen appeared to have the backing of Edmonton District Council and even the local MP Colonel Bowles. They threatened legal proceedings against the Railway Company. It all came to a head in 1899. On Monday 23rd January 20 police were employed by GER to SEP 2017 • EDMONTON GREEN •

control the anticipated crowd attempting to catch the 6.21am. If you didn’t have a ticket you were not allowed on the platform and at 6.15 the platform was closed due to overcrowding and two women were said to have fainted. However the crowd broke down the barrier and with a cheer rushed onto the platform and train. At Liverpool Street the passengers swept aside the ticket collectors and many travelled free of charge. It was reported that some workman returned home in the evening by tram for fear of being recognised at Liverpool Street. 16

• EDMONTON GREEN • SEP 2017

In an attempt to pacify the passengers and ease congestion at Lower Edmonton GER announced that as from Monday 13th February 1899 no workmen's tickets would be available after the 5.37 from Lower Edmonton High Level Station. After that there will be four workmen's trains from the Low Level Station. Tickets will be only available for specific trains i.e 5.53am train ticket would be green and brown and 6.21am tickets was coloured mauve and green. However only 200 tickets would be available for the 6.21 train. edmontongreenmag.co.uk

The ploy didn’t work and GER was forced to attend a hearing where judgement went against them. They were instructed to extend the workmen’s 2d return ticket to include trains up to 7am and offer a 3d return ticket for trains between 7am and 8am. It was the least they could do. GER issued 2,500,000 workmans tickets in 1882. By 1897 it had increase to over 5,000,000 and had they only added one extra train on our line. In contrast the first and second class season ticket holders who Sir William Birt, General Manager of GER claimed in 1899 “These were clerks and respon-

sible caretakers who have to wear black and would not wish to travel on workmen's trains” only totaled 179 from Lower Edmonton and 177 from Silver Street. The Workmen’s Ticket continued until after the Great War as you can see from the photo. The cost of a standard annual season ticket from Edmonton Green to Liverpool street today is £1276 and £1892 if you include underground travel. Hopefully in the not too distant future London Overground will increase the number of trains on the line and introduce new rolling stock. But don’t expect a cheap workmans ticket being re-introduced.

SO, CANICROSS? A DOG TRAINER’S PERSPECTIVE ON RUNNING WITH YOUR DOG

Clare Grierson Dog Trainer, Behaviourist & Runner

I love running. It’s a time for me. A time when I just become absorbed within myself, think about nothing but about how my body feels, the mud, lovely, lovely mud and ground beneath my feet, the trees and the scenery I am running through. The wind in my hair, the puddles and the track. A time to switch off. To breathe deeply, to just be. Competitively, it’s a time to grit in, to pick off those in front of you one by one by one. To dig in up the hills, to allow the body to flow down the hills and on sight of the finish, to power, to give it that last bit of energy, that one more deep breath. I can rest when I am over that line. The more I put in now, the more I will appreciate the down time, the cold beer, the well-deserved meal, the celebration of another personal best clocked up. 20

Why share that with a dog? Well, if you have one, why not? It’s fantastic! Why run on your own, then walk the dog? Why run with the dog on a lead with the dog yanking your shoulder from the socket? Why run whist

constantly calling the dog away from squirrels, other dogs at the other end of the field? Why do this alone when, you and your dog can be a team, a fantastic synchronised, bonded, streamlined team.

Canicross, as the name suggests is a combination of Canine and Cross Country. The right kit ensures a comfortable umbilical bond. The harness for your dog fits beautifully allowing them to breathe freely, pull in to the harness without rubbing and chaffing. The lead has a bungee effect ensuring both you and the dog are protected and that there is ample suspension. Then for you there is a hands-free waist belt. This is designed to sit just below your hips to ensure that there is

22

• EDMONTON GREEN • SEP 2017

no strain on your back, but better still, it helps to give stability and strength to your core. I am telling you, canicross had me at ‘can’! DogFitAs a dog trainer and a keen runner, I have been blessed to be able to combine both of my passions. What better way to spend an hour with my best friend than to run TOGETHER. And that’s the key. We run TOGETHER. We are both benefiting, bonding, spending time together, getting fit, socialising if we want to, and spending time alone-together, if we want to.

edmontongreenmag.co.uk

As part of training we add cues such as “let’s go”, left and right, “hike on” I think that has to be my favourite mind you, “on by” is pretty special too. With cues like that to use when running, I am surprised there aren’t more people literally grabbing their dogs and heading out for a run. For dogs that are “unsociable” or suffer from slight insecurities around other dogs, this sport is perfect. As a behaviourist, it is brilliant to find a sport where dogs of this nature can participate. They are “under control” as they are kept on lead. But they have the freedom and enjoyment of running, doing something positive, heathy, physical, opioid inducing activity with other dogs, whilst using their brains and being given the space they need to feel comfortable with their owners, their carers, their best friends. For agility dogs and owners, it is a wonderful way to keep fit for those all-important competitions.

"I am so glad that Canicross is becoming more and more incorporated in to running and charity events throughout the country, throughout the year. We have spent many years bonding with these amazing creatures. I hope more and more people will be inspired to take part in a sport that is fantastic for humans and canines alike whether it’s for general fitness or to raise awareness and money for special causes."

Touch, feel explore There’s something about jewellery that makes us happy. A tiny piece can hold so much emotion within. Jewellery designer, Zoe White has created a collection named Sensations, aimed at exploring senses of smell, sight, and particularly touch.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Zoe White and my business is called Zinfinity. I called it Zinfinity because I loved the idea of infinite beauty, infinite happiness, infinite design. The name "Infinity" seemed a bit boring, 'Z' is not a common letter so I put it on the front and it became Zinfinity. Zinfinity covers two main areas. Designing and creating fabulous quirky inclusive jewellery and fun creative workshops for all ages and abilities.

a range for all. There are attachments such as magnets instead of fiddly clasps so you can put on a bracelet one-handed and a necklace without looking or raising your arms high. I use items such as felt balls sprayed with perfume to explore memory sensation and use genuine Braille with empowering words such as Fortitude, Fabulous, Strength and Love; Earrings that say 'HA HA!' so when you play with them, they make you smile.

How long you have been doing this and what made you start?

About 14 years. I started because of my love of creating.

Tell us more about the concept of sensitive jewellery:

I'm known for my quirky jewellery, combining obscure materials with the precious. My whimsical jewellery is wearable, comfortable and fun, combining elegance with humour. Recently I have become known for my collection called 'Sensations'. A range aimed at exploring the senses of smell, sight and touch. It's fun and fashionable, pushing the boundaries of fashion. This range is inclusive, edmontongreenmag.co.uk

How did you get started with What is your creative prosensitive jewellery? cess like? Sensations started with one ring and the idea grew. I have been making fun jewellery for some years such as little men with your choice of words and crystal hearts and making adjustments for people who needed a chain longer / shorter etc. But a collection to fit all was not out there. My creative workshops also fed in to the collection. I design workshops to make sure everyone could be involved. So I looked at all the 'problems' the public had with jewellery and found solutions. We should all feel fabulous. 26

• EDMONTON GREEN • SEP 2017

I don't have a specific creative process. If a client has commissioned a piece I will research, design and design again. When I'm making my own pieces, ideas often come to me or I'm inspired by a material. I find a great way to create is by experimenting and playing with designs and ideas.

So how do you go about choosing a design?

When I choose a design to go out to the public, it must be wearable and comfortable, a joy to wear.

edmontongreenmag.co.uk

What inspires you?

Everything inspires me. Materials, shapes, people, colours. Something will take me on a journey and I enjoy the ride.

Anything else you’d like to share?

We are all fabulous. I believe “Feel Fabulous, Be Fabulous”. There is something about jewellery that makes us feel happy. We feel pride wearing jewellery, a tiny piece can hold so much emotion within it making it far more precious than its core materials.

Where can people see more of your work?

www.zinfinity.co.uk is where you can see my workshops, jewellery etc, along with a purchase page where you find outlets and contacts or you can pop in to a local outlet, Frocks, 717c Green Lanes, Winchmore Hill , N21 3RX I also recommend readers to look at the first page of my website and you will see a film of real people having real reactions to the jewellery. This collection engages the wearer and viewer and this film shows genuine emotions, movements, reaction and comments. A lovely 2 ½ minute film that says so much. CIRCULATE AND MILLFIELD EVENTS IN EDMONTON On Thursday 17 August Akademi delighted passers-by in North Square Edmonton Green to their piece Paradiso: Man’s Enduring Search for Perfection. Taking South East Dance to unexpected places, Akademi, a dance company founded in 1979 did just that here in Edmonton. Connecting South Asian dance with the wider contemporary arts sector, they develop a unique accessible dance style which captivates audiences.
