THE STAGE IS SET FOR ENFIELD’S SUMMER OF FOOD AND ARTS Performers, food producers and party fans were out in force Wednesday (23 June) to launch the official countdown to A Month of Sundays, a celebration of food and culture in Enfield Enfield Council’s A Month of Sundays will be a series of street festivals over August’s five Sundays, bringing out the best in the borough’s food businesses and celebrating local heritage and the arts. The Deputy Leader of the Council Cllr Ian Barnes was met at Edmonton Green by a full cast of performers including entertainer Sissy Lea, Platinum Performing Arts, a Steel Pan band and Brazilian Fantasy Carnival band. There were also Mauritian and Caribbean food displays from Edmonton Green Shopping Centre businesses, to give passers-by a flavour of what can be expected later this summer. The launch was overseen by Enfield events company Icy Mango, whose local expertise has been brought in to support the Council with its first ever celebration of food and the arts. Cllr Barnes explained further. He said: “The aim of A Month of Sundays is twofold. We naturally want to celebrate the

extraordinary food culture, heritage and diversity of Enfield. But we also want to support our businesses, retail centres and local communities as we recover from the last 18 months. The event will allow businesses to sell their goods and entertain thousands of visitors from licensed stalls, and showcase the best that Enfield has to offer. It will be a fantastic opportunity to say that Enfield is back in businesses and we can’t wait to welcome residents and visitors to our town centres. “The event fits in with the Council’s Culture Connects strategy, which aims to strengthen, enrich and communicate about Enfield’s creative industries and culture. We know that investing in culture brings both social and economic benefits, both of which are so important as we seek to renew and rebuild.” Alongside the food stalls, Enfield Council will be providing free entertainment by some of the borough’s finest acts. In addition,

Throughout the course of the workshops, Platinum Performing Arts facilitators worked hard to encourage the young people to open up about their challenges and experiences and these have been published in the Making History 2020 book. Platinum Performing Arts have already donated the books to Edmonton Green Little Free Library, Nexus Enfield, NHS charities and more.

“It is so important, especially in these difficult and challenging times that the voices of our young people are being heard. We feel passionately about creating a platform for them to express themselves creatively in a safe, judgment free environment. Having this book to look back on in years to come will remind us all of the strength they have shown and the achievements they have made.” - Nina Lewis-Hart, Principal and founder of Platinum Performing Arts.”

ARE YOU A PARENT OR INTERESTED IN TRAINING YOUR STAFF IN YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID? Unltd supports online training for 12 new youth mental health first aiders for organisations working with children and young people in the N9 Bountagu area When Liz attended Enfield Council’s facilitated community safety meetings (which also promoted positive activities for young people) 3 years ago, she didn’t realise then it would give her an idea on how to support the local community to support young people with their mental health. As an experienced coach for teenagers/ young adults, consultant and trainer, she undertook her own Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 2 day course three years ago. Liz Sorton is proud to announce her award from UnLtd, the UK’s foundation for social entrepreneurs. The award’s funding and tailored business support will significantly help Liz to deliver a high quality youth MHFA online course at a supported rate to 12 organisations that work with children aged 8-16 in the N9 Bountagu area. These youth mental health first aiders will provide mental health support for young people to identify the early warning signs of mental ill health due to witnessing or being involved in serious youth violence or dealing with readjusting to life post COVID 19. Please email Liz on hello@youthcoachliz.com 16

to reserve your place for this online course to take place later in the year. Liz will be running two discounted and charity fundraising online Youth (MHFA) 2 day courses to gain member instructor sign off in August and September. This course is suitable for those working with children aged 8+ or those living or caring for them. MHFA England training provides participants with the skills and confidence to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and effectively guide a person towards the right support. MHFA England’s mission is to help people develop the skills to look after their own and others’ wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill health.
Liz says “Thank you to the local community for the support that you have shown already for this Unltd project. I look forward to providing these youth mental health first aid courses for organisations who work with young people in the area” www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

What’s happening at Enfield Climate Action Forum’s Big Green Climate Festival this September? Litter picking; organised walks in local parks and along the New River; live theatre and music; organic wine and food tasting; intergenerational discussions on climate change; coffee in the Mosque, a youth showreel video; writer’s workshops and poetry. Online webinars, bike rides, tree planting and much much more. Part of the Climate Coalition’s national Great Big Green Week, Enfield is launching its very own Big Green Climate Festival between the 18th and 26th September In November (during COP26) world leaders will be meeting in Glasgow to decide the next steps to tackle

climate change. This is probably the most critical meeting of the year. If we fail to agree on a climate strategy, the future for our children and grandchildren is bleak. Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) is supporting the Climate Coalition’s nationwide festival to highlight the climate emergency and put pressure on world leaders to act. More than 70 groups in the borough have expressed an interest in being involved, and are keen to come together and make a difference. The festival will also be a chance for local groups to showcase their activities and concerns for a sustainable Enfield. Our three MPs have agreed to support the festival and we hope they’ll join a meeting to talk about the importance of COP26 and what it must achieve. On September 25th, we will be joining the United Reform Churches to hold a special one-day event at the United Reformed Church on Chase Side, with stalls, entertainment and many other activities. We’re beginning to get schools involved, to showcase the work they’ve been doing to protect the environment and to express their concern about climate change. And the young people from EnCaf Youth will join the Over 50’s Forum to discuss how climate change will have an impact across generations.
With under three months to go, many organisations are still joining and we hope to have almost 100 different events throughout the days of the festival.
You can keep up to date with the events being arranged by visiting www.encaf.org/climatefestival. And if you or your organisation want to take part, please let us know at emergency@encaf.org

TAKE PART TO HELP DEVELOP ENFIELD’S FUTURE
Consultation on Enfield’s Draft Local Plan has officially launched and Enfield Council wants your views on proposals to build urgently needed homes, to invest in green spaces and to support the local economy.
Enfield Council proposes to deliver 25,000 new homes across the borough and to reduce inequalities, particularly between the east and west. This will help to tackle the borough’s housing crisis, where residents are finding it increasingly difficult to find decent and affordable homes to rent or buy, particularly as Enfield’s population is expected to grow by an additional 50,000 people by 2039. Enfield Council’s Leader, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “Our Local Plan sets out a clear vision for the future development of the borough while also protecting its unique character. People who want 22
Edmonton Green Magazine | #13
to live and work here should have the means to do so. By providing genuinely affordable homes in safe areas, with greater connectivity and access to employment opportunities, the borough can become a fairer place with broad opportunities for all. “We also want people to have equal access to green, open spaces which is why we have already approved plans for 300 hectares of woodland, 12 new wetland sites and 22 hectares of new parkland. Enfield Council also supports extensive environmental investment and initiatives such as the
www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk
London National Park City, so everyone can enjoy high-quality green spaces, where people, buildings and nature are better connected. We are aware of the strength of opinion on these topics which is why it’s so important to take part in the consultation.” There are many ways to get involved. The Draft Enfield Local Plan 2039 consultation is now available on the Let’s Talk platform and will be open for 12 weeks. In addition the Council will host meetings and workshops to go through the proposals and empower residents to respond. Enfield Council is keen to hear from residents from all across the borough but in particular, we’d like responses from charities, community groups and young people who are key to the future development of the borough. In order to deliver much needed family homes for the growing population, Enfield Council will have to find suitable areas, which is why one of the proposals in the draft is to build on seven per cent of rural Enfield, in a number of locations including near Crews Hill Station.
These new places will not only help deliver more homes and employment for Enfield residents, they will also facilitate improvements to the quality and accessibility of the borough’s wilder areas and also help support sustainable food growing, sporting excellence and nature-based education. Meanwhile, approximately 18,500 homes are proposed to be delivered in urban areas. Enfield Council has a statutory duty to build 1,246 net new homes in the borough every year – although local need is higher than this.
Cllr Caliskan said: “By addressing the housing problem head-on, we can avoid the development of inappropriate skyscrapers across the borough and design good homes in safe neighbourhoods. We know our residents do not want to see high-rise building blocks across Enfield, which is why we have explored other appropriate solutions, which includes developments on urban brownfield sites as well as in more rural areas.”
More information on the draft Enfield Local Plan can be found at www.enfield.gov.uk/enfieldlocalplan. After consultation, all representations received will be assessed and the Draft Local Plan refined in light of these and other information. The revised plan will be brought back to full Council before being submitted to a Planning Inspector. SCALING NEW HEIGHTS WITH RELAUNCH OF CRAIG PARK CLIMBING WALL A climbing wall has been revived and relaunched by Enfield Council, offering a fun sporting activity and potential for accredited training for young people.
Enfield Council’s Youth Development Service (YDS) has reinstated the wall at Unity Hub in Craig Park and staff have been trained by experts to deliver the free climbing wall sessions twice a week for up to 12 young people per session. The next target is to become an accredited centre to deliver the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (levels 1 to 5) to young people. This will further empower young people to develop their 26
Edmonton Green Magazine | #13
skills and abilities both as individuals and as part of a team and to open opportunities to a career as a climbing wall instructor. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Rick Jewell*, visited the climbing wall along with Associate Cabinet Member Cllr Ergin Erbil (12 June). They could see first-hand the benefits of the climbing centre to Enfield’s young people.
www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Cllr Jewell said: “Enfield Council’s YDS team has done a magnificent job in bringing back this activity for young people. You can see how this will positively impact their wellbeing and fitness and also help to build their confidence and self-esteem. A positive activity such as wall climbing also helps to develop social interactions and team problem solving skills. Ultimately this will benefit these young people to meet their full potential socially and in a wider context in education, training and employment. I look forward to seeing the next phase of the centre’s development, where it can start to offer structured climbing assessments.”
Previously, the climbing wall was administered by an external provider but it has now been brought in-house. YDS staff members were given training over a three-month period to ensure they are fully competent and can deliver a safe, high-quality service. By upskilling staff, Enfield Council will be able to have more autonomy over the frequency of the sessions and therefore more young people will have opportunities to climb.
www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk
Although climbing is physically and mentally demanding, the wall is open to those from all backgrounds and disability is not a barrier to participation. Those interested in getting involved should register and book at Enfield TapTub https://youthenfield.taptub. co.uk/ - the Council’s youth activities portal - where you can also find information about other Enfield Council youth centres, programmes and the upcoming Summer University.
