VACCINE STATS

The COVID-19 vaccine roll out is going well in the UK. Over 46 million people have now received the first dose of the vaccine and over 37 million have received a second dose. In Enfield too, we have a success story, with some of the highest vaccination rates in North London. However, the picture is not consistent across all of Enfield. In Edmonton there is still a low

uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine. 55.6% of the adult population in Lower Edmonton have had their first dose of the vaccination as well as 56.7% and 57.6% of the adult population in Upper Edmonton and Edmonton Green respectively vs. 67% borough average, despite the fact that the vaccine has been proven to be safe and effective against coronavirus.

Two doses for full protection Community infection rates are rising so it is important that we get the full protection of both doses of the vaccine. There is an eight-week (56 day) minimum timeframe between a first and second vaccination, in line with current Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) guidelines. This gives the best possible protection from the Delta variant. Having two doses of the vaccine opens a world of opportunities for people – for example, most festivals and large-scale events require people to be double 8

Edmonton Green Magazine | #14

jabbed to gain entrance. From 19 July, adults that are double jabbed by the NHS will not need to selfisolate after travel to amber countries, opening up popular holiday destinations without quarantining on return! In some popular holiday destinations, you must be able to show you are vaccinated in order to enjoy activities such as going to the cinema, eating out in restaurants or attending a nightclub. In order to go back to doing the things we all love, we have to take steps to protect ourselves and the people around us. www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Vaccines are safe and effective Vaccines have always been a part of our lives. The Covid-19 vaccine has undergone rigorous tests, including clinical trials that are globally recognised as having the highest safety standards. Hundreds of scientists, thousands of volunteers and billions of pounds of funding have meant that Covid-19 vaccines have been developed quickly and safely. All the Covid-19 vaccines in use in the UK protect you from coronavirus – they are safe and effective. The Covid-19 vaccines work just like any

other vaccine you may have had such as the flu vaccine or Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR) vaccine given to young children. Vaccines train your immune system to make antibodies and cells to fight the infection. Covid-19 vaccines do not contain the COVID-19 virus, or anything that has come from animals. Find out more on how the vaccine was developed quickly and safely and how the vaccine works here: https://bit. ly/3xkcNRE

Fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding The JVCI, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and health professionals have advised that pregnant women should take the vaccine. Also, those breastfeeding should not stop to get the vaccine. Women trying to become pregnant do not need to avoid pregnancy after vaccination and there is no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 vaccines will affect fertility. Find out more here Here are links to videos from the

Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists as well health professionals. Get your vaccine at a walk-in centre near you The COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others from the virus. Enfield Council is working with its partners across North London and in the NHS to make it as easy as possible for you to get your vaccination. Walk-in centres mean you don’t have to have an appointment. You don’t even need to be registered with a GP. Our centres will www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

not ask any information from you other than to confirm your name, date of birth, address and they will go through some simple questions about your health. Help protect the things we love and get the jab. Find out more on getting your vaccine here: https://bit.ly/3fmHteF

It is becoming more and more clear that projects like this are important for the well-being of our young people in London and Sadiq Khan agrees. Backing the programme Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan visited on the 20th July in support of the programme. ‘If we have places that are government

founded and we have teachers that love what they do and are here for the right reasons, they (young people) have somewhere to go where they feel included and safe and a family’. Erina Lewis (Dream Believe Succeed - Mentor).

SUMMER OF FUN AT EDMONTON GREEN SHOPPING CENTRE This Summer is yet another strange one with many of us looking for ways to keep the family entertained while not venturing too far or breaking the bank.

The team at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre have you covered. With the relaunch of EdMINItons – the BIG club for little shoppers, dinosaurs, a petting zoo, a street festival and a travelling local museum there really is something for everyone to keep you busy over the coming weeks. Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, said, “We know how hard it is to keep the kids entertained during the summer holidays, off their devices and getting some fresh air…especially in the current 12

Edmonton Green Magazine | #14

circumstances…so we’ve done some hard work so you don’t have to. “Starting from August 9th, we have lined up entertainment including a huge petting zoo within the Centre, a dinosaur dig for bones and fossils, a children’s entertainer, the opportunity to see some dinosaurs walking around the Centre, a street festival with music and food and an exhibition from The Museum of Enfield. No matter what the age, we will all be entertained.” The kids will be spoilt for choice with the chance to see the likes of sheep, www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

iguanas and guinea pigs at the petting zoo on August 20th. There will also be a competition to win a family ticket to Paradise Wildlife Park. The 22nd August will see one of five street festivals organised by Enfield Council. On the concourse, there will be a variety of activity including food stalls, local businesses, music, theatre, dancing and some of the finest entertainers that Enfield has to offer. From August 23rd kids can take part in a dinosaur dig which will involve them

digging for fossils and bones whilst also being able to see some dinosaurs too. It is going to be roarsome! And to top it all off, Edmonton Green Shopping Centre will also be hosting The Museum of Enfield who will be visiting with a travelling exhibition from 23rd August – 10th September. The exhibition will be situated right outside the library and will explore the borough’s history and relationship with food, food innovation and food production.

For full information and details on each specific event please visit www.edmontongreencentre.co.uk. The fun will be continuing throughout the year including further events such as “One Great Day”, a family fun fundraising day on September 4th alongside Great Ormond Street Hospital and North Side Youths. Prepare to be totally entertained! So that’s your summer sorted. Never fear, Edmonton Green is here!

BIRTHDAY WEEKEND WALK IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre is turning 19 and to celebrate our birthday, we’re holding a Birthday Weekend Walk! Over the weekend of the 20th – 22nd August we’re asking people to go on a walk and show their support for those affected by cancer. We’d love for you to take part and help us help all those that live with cancer and the devastating impact it can have on their lives.

WHERE?

The short answer is; anywhere! You can walk wherever you’d like. In your favourite park, along your high street or even in your garden.

HOW FAR SHOULD I WALK? We’re suggesting a 10k walk, but if you would like to walk a shorter or longer distance, we don’t mind, as long as you’re comfortable and having fun. Did you know that walking 10,000 steps per day means you walk roughly 8k?! We bet you didn’t think it would be that easy to walk that far. So if you don’t want to go for one solid walk, you could chose to dedicate your 10,000 steps over 20th-22nd August to The Nightingale. We even have some suggested walking routes around different parts of Enfield. You can find them here

WHY SHOULD I WALK? In the UK statistics currently indicate that one in two people will be diagnoses with cancer at some point in their lives, suggesting that most people will be affected by cancer in some way. We want to be here to help as many of them as possible come to terms with and deal with their changed lives. Through registrations, sponsorships and donations we’re hoping to raise £9,000 which will pay for two complementary therapists to come to the centre for a whole year, delivering nearly 600 massage and reflexology sessions to clients! Our Birthday Weekend Walk is one of the most important events we will hold this year. The Nightingale relies solely on external fundraising and doesn’t receive any government funding, so it’s events like this that mean we can continue to provide all of our services free of charge. After a difficult year of no events or fundraising, we’re looking forward to our supporters and community helping us out in a big way!

HOW DO I TAKE PART? You can take your first step today and sign up to our Birthday Weekend Walk, get a sponsorship form or donate to The Nightingale by Visiting www.nightingalesupport.org.uk/birthdaywalk Calling 020 8366 9674 | Emailing fundraising@nightingalesupport.org.uk 14

A MEETING ON THE EDMONTON INCINERATOR - A SOCIAL INJUSTICE

As part of the Enfield Climate Action Forum Bi Green Festival there will be a meeting held in Edmonton to discuss the proposed new Incinerator there and the danger it holds for people living there and for the planet because of its greenhouse gas emissions. This will

18

Edmonton Green Magazine | #14

take place on Sunday September 26th at 2.00pm. The venue will be confirmed soon. Across Europe Incinerators are being phased out and Denmark has shut down seven already. But not in the UK and especially in Edmonton.

www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Francis Sealey Chairman of GlobalNet21 and Enfield Voices

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is building a large Incinerator in what it ironically calls an Eco Park. This Incinerator will emit hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as well as particulates that endangers health. The NWLA claims that it will not endanger health citing research from Public Health England and Imperial College but that is nowhere conclusive as they suggest, and other scientists have either questioned this or argued that we will not know accurately until it starts emitting particulates into the air. And they have chosen to build this in Edmonton one of the poorest parts of the Borough where there is both deprivation and overcrowding because of the lack of family homes. Waste incinerators are three times more likely to be built in the UK’s most deprived neighbourhoods and globally it seems that incinerators are built in the poorest

localities, and it is the people living there who have to suffer the consequences. Also where Incinerators are built then recycling suffers and it almost certainly will in Edmonton. The Edmonton Incinerator will be a hungry beast and for years will require waste to feed it. It will need to use waste locally or import it from elsewhere in order to be profitable. In such circumstances recycling will not be a top priority. And at a time when we are facing a climate crisis that will engulf the globe and when many scientists tell us we must stop carbon emissions now, the Edmonton Incinerator will emit hundreds of thousands of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and is contrary to any measures to combat climate change. It is a step backwards and not one that bides well for our future.

Come and join us at the meeting in September Visit www.stop-edmonton-incinerator.org

EDMONTON CARES… COMMUNITY COHESION AT IT’S BEST! Bringing the community together is vital for the team at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. This month there are two community projects; primary school painting and The Great Big Bottle Swap to encourage involvement.

On 9th July, two local primary schools, Eldon Primary and Starks Primary, will be visiting the Centre armed with paints and their creative minds to work their magic on two separate community benches. Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, said, ““This is a large part of our work locally as we aim to bring the community closer and to make sure everyone feels welcome and a part of Edmonton Green. The North Square is somewhat of a family zone and we’d love our benches

20

Edmonton Green Magazine | #14

and additional seating to really be brought to life. It is going to be wonderful to watch the local children work on the benches and receive their certificates afterwards. I am sure there will be several very proud families coming to pay us a visit.” Community bonds will also continue to be strengthened with Plastic Free July as Edmonton Green Shopping Centre has launched The Great Big Bottle Swap to encourage more of us to be more aware of our plastic usage.

www.edmontongreenmag.co.uk

Edmonton Green Shopping Centre management team

For the whole of July, customers can swap their single use plastic bottles for an Edmonton Green reusable one (while stocks last.) Making a small change collectively can make a massive difference to our communities. The initiative is part of Plastic Free July, a global movement that aims to encourage people to reduce plastic usage, and Edmonton Green Shopping Centre want us all to get involved. Rebecca continued, “We are passionate about this campaign and would love as many of you as possible to bring your

empty single use bottles in to us at the management office. In return, we will give you one of our reusable bottles. We have adult designs as well as smaller ones for the kids so no one feels left out. We want to do our part to ensure we are part of Plastic Free July so we welcome everyone to come by and drop off their bottles. All of our staff are being encouraged to do the same.” All the bottles given to the Centre will be recycled with the Centre’s refuse company, Regency.

There is so much more going on in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre so keep an eye on our website www.edmontongreencentre.co.uk or follow us on social media to keep a closer eye on the action.
