‘Vice’ more than just another political piece

All-star cast leads film

By Robert Grubaugh Contributing columnist Director Adam McKay performed quite a trick in 2015, making “The Big Short,” a funny, touching and dramatically thrilling movie about the 2008 economic downturn and mortgage crisis. The movie was a highlight of that year’s entire cinematic slate — I’ve rewatched it a few times since — and it remains a cautionary hoot.

“The Big Short’s” ensemble cast featured a bunch of heavyweight actors who McKay seemed to clearly impress, because for his

new film, “Vice,” several stars returned.

McKay went on to win the Oscar for “The Big Short” for Best Original Screenplay.

“Vice” is about Richard “Dick” Bruce Cheney, our nation’s 46th vice president, who, some say, was the nation’s most ruthless, powerful and significant.

As a biopic, “Vice” has the familiar flavor that covers a whole life. We meet Cheney (Christian Bale) as a hard-partying Yale flunk out; see his early days hanging telephone wire in Wyoming, where he became a state representative; and, finally, taking the “pledge,” for the sake of his marriage to his wife, Lynne (Amy Adams), who’s his motivator, relentless taskmaster and stalwart backstop. Nothing — we’re led to believe — got Dick to the highest levels of government more than his wife’s

nagging ability to never accept less than the very best.

To keep his life together and protect his family, Cheney makes the leap into politics — first by becoming an intern for then Illinois Rep. Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell) and riding Rumsfeld’s coattails to a White House advisory position (and eventual chief of staff) during President Richard Nixon and Vice President Gerald Ford’s tenures. The Dixiecrat years led Cheney to his own time in Congress, before coming back to the fold as secretary of defense for President George H.W. Bush.

The meatiest parts of the movie depict Cheney’s days in President George W. Bush’s (Sam Rockwell) administration.

“Vice” insinuates that Cheney accepted whatever mantle of power that he was able to

squirrel away from whomever. G.W. Bush is portrayed as a milquetoast pushover, simply trying to stand independently of his dad’s shadow. Bale’s Cheney is quiet and subtle, as befits the movie’s opening premise that Cheney operated, more or less, as a ghost while making decisions that affected the entire world.

The portrayal of Colin Powell (Tyler Perry) probably dredges up the worst days of the former secretary of state’s life.

If you can still stomach another movie about politics, check this one out. As a sophomore effort, it’s safely designed by a talented filmmaker.

“Vice” runs 132 minutes and is rated R for language and some violent images. I give this film three stars out of four.

Kevin Hart says he’s considering Oscar hosting gig again

By David Bauder AP Media Writer NEW YORK — Prodded by Ellen DeGeneres, comic Kevin Hart says he’ll reconsider his decision to step down as host of the Academy Awards.

Hart had backed away two days after being named host last month when some homophobic tweets he had made a decade ago resurfaced. But DeGeneres urged him to host the show during an interview that aired Friday on her talk show.

The motion picture Academy has not named a replacement host for its Feb. 24 awards show.

“You have grown,” DeGeneres told him.

“You have apologized. You’re apologizing again right now. You’ve done it. Don’t let these people win. Host the Oscars.”

She applied subtle pressure by saying after one commercial break, “We’re back with this

year’s Oscars host, Kevin Hart.”

Hart told her that “you have put a lot of things on my mind” and that he would think about their conversation.

The LGBTQ watchdog organization GLAAD on Friday reiterated its position that Hart not step down as host but instead use the platform to “send an unequivocal message of acceptance to LGBTQ youth.”

If there’s a campaign to get him back, it couldn’t have started more slickly: on the hugely successful talk show run by one of Hollywood’s most prominent gay celebrities, who hosted the Oscars herself in 2007.

DeGeneres said she called the Academy this week to urge that Hart be brought back, and was told that officials would be “thrilled” if he did. An Academy representative did not immediately return messages for comment.

Hart wrote homophobic remarks on Twitter mostly between 2009-2011, including one where he said: “Yo if my son comes home

& try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.’” It was later deleted.

He has also made anti-gay comments in his standup in the past.

Hart told her that when his old messages resurfaced, “what was once the brightest light ever just got real dark.” He initially said he wouldn’t apologize because he had addressed the issue several times. But given an ultimatum to apologize, he did so and stepped down.

Hart said it was hard for him because he considered it an attack when his tweets resurfaced a day after he got the Oscars gig.

“That’s an attempt to end me,” he said.

“That’s not an attack to just stop the Oscars ... Somebody has to take a stand against the ... trolls.”

DeGeneres received some resistance on social media, with some commenters saying that Hart’s homophobic jokes were a legiti-

mate issue for discussion, and it wasn’t a case of people maliciously trying to hurt him.

In a column posted Friday in the trade publication Variety, Caroline Framke argued that Hart hadn’t proven that he’d learned much.

Kind care at One Chair Hair: A New Boutique Salon Experience

by Jill Moon, jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — One Chair Hair founder crossed cultures and countries to find her center and now she provides nurturing styling services through her newly launched lifestyle business, By Cassandra.

Stylist Cassie Celuch’s artistic path began as a child, encouraged by her parents, of Holiday Shores, both retired educators.

The mother of three daughters played the violin and flute and sang while attending Edwardsville High School, from where she graduated in 1998, and at first pursued a career as an actor. In 2000, Celuch moved to Los Angeles to audition for permanent gigs. But, life had other plans and she became a single mother in 2007, prompt-

ing her move back to Edwardsville, where she chose to give birth to her first child, Londyn, 11.

Celuch, 38, knows firsthand the struggle that today’s women endure, balancing children, careers, family, relationships and the pursuit of happiness, from which her singular boutique salon, One Chair Hair, offers a sweet reprieve. Celuch works by appointment only, one on one with each client, on average for two hours, offering aromatherapy for tranquility, warm lavender-scented towels for tired muscles, a bit of Champagne to celebrate “me time” and a relaxing scalp massage before color and styling services. Celuch has a personal relationship with each and every client, only double booking in cases of emergency, she said.

“One Chair Hair has probably been ten years in the making, but I wanted to be very deliberate,” said Celuch, who started the salon with a few more than 20 clients.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to provide a customer experience that’s largely missing in bigger salons.

“It’s amazing for me, too, to be able to be a working mom and still be able to do activities with my kids and spend time with them. Everything I envision here is about empowering women, not to have women competing against each other. I make it a point to guide my clients to find that confident person again, maybe who got lost along the years of giving so much to everyone else. And I have great empathy, some say to my detriment, but that’s

absolutely how I live my life.”

With the trust she’s built with each client, Celuch can authentically talk to them about their vision for themselves and how they want to present themselves publicly. If a client seemingly wants to make a drastic change, such as suddenly go from long locks to an uber-short style, she makes sure that’s a thought-out choice, not a reaction to a stressful day.

“My point of being here is to help make people feel better about themselves,” said Celuch, who for the past four years donated her time and services of hair and make-up for the Friends of the Wildey Theatre’s annual gala, Art of Fashion, and is very active in a slew of other nonprofit events.

Last August, following a soft opening January 2018 of Edwardsville’s One Chair Hair, 226 N. Main St. (in the same historic building as her husband’s 40-year-old family-owned marketing business, Inlandesign), Celuch set goals for the salon’s growth.

“Over the last four months, it’s grown by

leaps and bounds,” Celuch noted. “Ninety percent has been through referrals. I’m close to capacity.”

Celuch’s client base is made up predominantly of moms, many of whom are working moms, like Celuch, and college students, who all reflect Celuch’s own experience.

When Celuch returned and lived in Edwardsville for about one year, and Londyn was 5 weeks old, she got a full-time job bartending at Gentelin’s On Broadway, in Alton, Illinois, and eventually enrolled in cosmetology school in Missouri, which, with classes and the commute, made for 16-hour days, five days a week.

“Working nights made it possible for me to be with my daughter during the day,” explained Celuch, who most recently managed 1818 Chophouse’s bar in Edwardsville before opening One Chair Hair. “Through all of the years as a young mother, because of my parents, I was lucky to only have to use daycare for one year.”

line exclusively and takes advantage of monthly continuing education classes through the company. IdHAIR stays ahead of color trends, such as hair painting, balayage and color melting.

“That felt good to me,” Celuch said of IdHAIR’s interest in working with her. “They are ahead of the curve. It used to be all foils, all the time, but the trend is more toward hair painting, natural highlights, easy grow out, more free and open, not cookie cutter.

And, I like to follow East and West coasts’ vibes.”

During the latter part of eight years working at Gentelin’s, Celuch began to pursue her career as a stylist, also working at Fringe Salon, in Alton, for two years. During that time, she reunited with a high school friend, Adam Celuch, who became her husband in 2010, and the couple’s family grew to include Londyn’s sisters, Aspyn, 5, and Phoenyx, 3 All the while, Celuch kept her resolution to start her own lifestyle business, now with its trademarked name, By Cassandra and its website bycassandra.com. The startup business’ first goal: the launch of One Chair Hair, a comforting, tranquil, stylish salon.

Celuch’s varied interest over the years all led her to where she is now, including acting, for which she was an extra for two years in L.A. for “The Young and The Restless”; modeling, for which she signed with St. Louis’ Talent Plus for one year upon returning to live in Edwardsville; and, fashion design, for which she interned for one year at Alton’s By Design, which teaches sewing classes, as well as custom couture design.

All these pursuits — and philosophical worldview of nonjudgment and acceptance of all — are underscored by lessons instilled from her dad, Terry Miller, who worked for a St. Louis school district, and her mom, Jan Miller, a music teacher for the Edwardsville school district. Celuch’s parents helped start an English language school and church on the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan, where Celuch lived with her family from age 7 through age 9. The Miller family, who includes Celuch’s two brothers and sister, moved back to Holiday Shores after a few years.

“That’s really given me my perspective and the concept for how I live my life,” she said.

Celuch’s experiences abroad during that

time included eating sushi for the first time on a beach with a Japanese family and traveling across Southeast Asia.

The fundraising event entails 10 artists who cr artwork live, while guests bid on the complete pieces to take home with them.

The fundraiser is one of the EAC’s main fundr ers. Over 100 people attended last year’s even where every artist sold their finished piece. “S last year was the inaugural event, we weren’t entirely sure how it was going to go, but it was hugely successful, and we are really excited ab the second annual Art Alive this March,” Caro Tidball, EAC gallery manager, said.

This year’s Art Alive will take place from 6 p.m 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 at the Wildey Th in downtown Edwardsville. Admission is $50 per person which includes live music, appetize drinks and various activities such as raffles for artwork.

Following the Jan. 25 deadline, the EAC Art Alive Committee will review the applications and artists will receive notification of acceptance via email on Jan. 28.

The 10 artists selected for Art Alive 2019 will finish their artwork during the March 2 event as guests walk around watching the artists complete their pieces while at the same time conversing with them about the pieces that they are working on.

Guests bid on the pieces being created, and the highest bidders for each piece takes home the artwork that night.

Art Alive is an important fundraiser for the EAC. It helps to fund the EAC’s mission to inspire the lives of youth and the creative spirit of adults through classes, exhibits and cultural events. The monthly gallery shows, the kid’s free Saturday art classes, community events, public outreach all use these financial resources raised during Art Alive.

Learn how to take them a step further when James Dunn, founder of the EPIC Living Social Club, presents “Design an EPIC Life,” an interactive workshop to set goals, establish accountability and create a life design for an EPIC 2019. The 7 p.m. workshop takes place at the Edwardsville Library on Monday, Jan. 14.

Formerly the Edwardsville Personal Development Meet Up Group, which met at the Holiday Inn Express, EPIC Living Social Club is moving to the Edwardsville Library, beginning this month, for its monthly, free meetings and the public is encouraged to attend.

The first meeting, Monday, Jan. 14, will feature Dunn presenting “Design an EPIC Life.”

“Every year I set goals, and last year before the EPIC Living Social Club, we had done a goal setting session and had some really great success with it,” Dunn said.

He explained that someone had attended that meeting who had always wanted to be an airplane pilot.

“It was something he had been dreaming about for a long time but had put it off. Kind of where life got in the way….and he decided that year that he wanted to get his pilot’s license, and through the course of last year, he went and got everything he needed…And in October, he got his pilot’s license. He can now fly planes. We’re presenting that at the library on Jan. 14.”

The Jan. 14 workshop will last just shy of two hours.

“If you’ve got goals, go ahead and bring them but if not, we’ll help you break down the idea of what goals are and resolutions,” Dunn said. “So many people set New Year’s resolutions and by the end of January or February at the latest, they are gone and have given up on them.”

Dunn said that at the workshop he will help them to define specifically what a goal is, talk about a smart goal, and what’s important to have when setting goals.

“So they are very clearly defined and they have a timeline attached to them,” he said. “We are going to get

very specific on what people want and give them the framework to make that happen.”

“All they need to do is show up with a pen and paper and the willingness to play full out. That’s all I ever ask for,” Dunn added.

Dunn is currently a Life Coach who worked previously for 10 plus years in various management and sales careers, but felt unfulfilled until he attended an Anthony Robbins presentation in California in 2014.

“I found myself surrounded by people who were living the life that I wanted to be living and dreaming the way I wanted to be dreaming,” Dunn recalled. “It was one of those things where you could see them actually putting it into place and living that life of freedom and life of happiness and joy and being surrounded by awesome people. That’s when the light bulb flipped on. These were the people I’ve been searching for my entire life. That’s what inspired me.”

He realized he needed to surround himself back home with people of similar interest in self-improvement, personal development and personal growth. “It was really a selfish reason because I wanted to keep myself inspired in between these big events that I would go to,” Dunn said.

That led to the formation of the Edwardsville Personal Development Meet Up Group in Nov. of 2017 and now the transformation into EPIC Living Social Club that will meet monthly at the Edwardsville Library.

“It’s something that we’re excited to try and open up more,” Dunn added. “We have a really good group of people.”

The EPIC Living Social Club meeting has scheduled its next meeting for Feb. 6 which will be a Skype presentation by a top rated iTunes podcaster on the subject of wealth and finance, and he will be speaking about Money Mindset.

The EPIC Living Social Club monthly meetings are free to the public and no reservation or RSVP is required; however, there is an event page through the library’s Facebook page where people can note their interest or plans to attend the event.

Make sure you have the essential tools. To start cooking regularly, you really need only a few basic tools. Make sure you’ve got a sharp knife, a vegetable peeler, a cutting board, a colander, a skillet, a large pot, a roasting pan and a baking dish or two. A pressure cooker is also handy for preparing quick meals on busier days.

With these foundational pieces, you can make a wide array of dishes. (Don’t worry; you can always stock up on more kitchen supplies later on.)

Build an herbs and spices collection.

NEW ORLEANS — As the rest of America winds down from the parties, overeating and merriment of Christmas and New Year’s, New Orleans keeps the party going. Mardi Gras season officially kicks off Sunday.

Jan. 6 is often referred to as Epiphany, Twelfth Night or Three Kings’ Day and commemorates the day the Bible says the three wise men reached the baby Jesus.

For weeks, the city is taken over by elaborate parades and people stuffing their faces with sugary king cake.

The party culminates on Fat Tuesday, which this year falls on March 5.

LET THEM EAT CAKE Probably the biggest single sign that Mardi Gras season is upon us is king cake. The ring-shaped cakes often decorated in the Mardi Gras tri-color of purple, green and gold can be found at bakeries, restaurants, office parties and homes across town during the season.

Cakes can be plain or filled with fruit and cream or laced with cinnamon. Bakers go all out.

For example, Alton Osborn, who owns Bywater

Bakery with his wife Chaya Conrad, is this year introducing three savory king cakes — crawfish, boudin and spinach/ artichoke — to accompany their nine sweet king cakes.

They’re also hosting a full lineup of live music Sunday to entertain restaurant goers.

King cakes account for a “huge part of our business,” Osborn said. He’s got high hopes for the new savory king cakes: “It’s going to blow some minds.”

PARADE CHANGES Traditionally the bulk of the parades happen around the two weekends ahead of Fat Tuesday. Scheduling changes this year mean that Krewe of Chewbacchus , a walking parade devoted to science fiction, is rolling

OUTSIDE OF NEW ORLEANS Towns and cities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama also host parades and events during Mardi Gras season. Last year, Alabama’s state tourism agency purchased 10 billboards around New Orleans and southern Mississippi to promote Carnival in Mobile. Rather than mentioning Mobile specifically, the signs told drivers how many miles they are from “America’s original Mardi Gras.” And they didn’t mean New Orleans.

New Orleans officials took the ribbing in stride with then-Mayor Mitch Landrieu saying: “There’s only one great Mardi Gras in the world.” And he didn’t mean Mobile.

In southern Louisiana’s Cajun country, costumed participants ride on horseback or run through towns stopping at houses to collect ingredients for gumbo in a tradition called Courir de Mardi Gras.

Netflix and chill no more — streaming gets complicated

By Mae Anderson AP Technology Writer Streaming TV may never again be as simple, or as affordable, as it is now.

Disney and WarnerMedia are each launching their own streaming services in 2019 in a challenge to Netflix’s dominance. Netflix viewers will no longer be able to watch hit movies such as “Black Panther” or “Moana,” which will soon reside on Disney’s subscription service.

WarnerMedia, a unit of AT&T, will also soon have its own service to showcase its library of blockbuster films and HBO series.

Families will have to decide between paying more each month or losing access to some of their favorite dramas, comedies, musicals and action flicks.

“There’s definitely a lot of change coming,” said Paul Verna at eMarketer, a digital research company. “People will have more choices of what to stream, but at the same time the market is already fragmented and intimidating and it is only going to get more so.”

Media companies are seeking to capitalize on the popularity and profitability of streaming. But by fragmenting the market, they’re also narrowing the once wide selection that fueled the rise of internetbased video. About 55 percent of U.S. households now subscribe to paid streaming video services, up from just 10 percent in 2009, according to research firm Deloitte.

Just as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime tempted people to “cut the cord” by canceling traditional cable TV packages, the newer services are looking to dismember those moreinclusive options.

Disney Plus is set to launch late next year with new Marvel and Star Wars

It hasn’t announced pricing yet, but Disney CEO Bob Iger said in an August call with analysts that it will likely be less than Netflix, which runs $8 to $14 a month, since its library will be smaller.

AT&T plans a three-tier offering from WarnerMedia, with a slate of new and library content centered around the existing HBO streaming app. No word on pricing yet.

Individual channels, such as Fox, ESPN, CBS and Showtime, are also getting into the act. Research group TDG predicts that every major TV network will launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service in the next five years.

Netflix and others have invested heavily in original movies and TV shows to keep their customers loyal. Netflix, for instance,

said Wednesday that 45 million subscriber accounts worldwide watched the Sandra Bullock thriller “Bird Box” during its first seven days on the service, the biggest first-week success of any movie made for the company’s nearly 12-yearold streaming service.

That first-week audience means nearly a third of Netflix’s 137 million subscribers watched the movie from Dec. 21 through Dec. 27 — a holiday-season stretch when many people aren’t working and have more free time.

But Netflix, Hulu and others may soon have to do without programs and movies licensed from their soon-to-be rivals. In December, Netflix paid a reported $100 million to continue licensing “Friends” from WarnerMedia.

Why are media companies looking to get in? Data and dollars. Sure, they get money when they sell their

programs to other services like Netflix. But starting their own service allows networks and studios access to valuable data about who is binging on their shows.

For services with ad-based options, that data translates into more dollars from advertisers.

And services that rely only on subscription revenues, media companies can use the data to better tailor their offerings for individual tastes, helping to draw in more subscribers.

“I think all media companies are coming to grips with the reality that you better establish a relationship directly with your audiences,” said AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson at an analyst conference earlier this month.

The business model that some networks and content companies are currently using, distributing their TV shows and movies only by licensing them to streaming

platforms, is getting “disrupted aggressively” as more companies launch their own services, said Stephenson, whose company acquired WarnerMedia in June.

Forrester analyst Jim Nail compares this moment to the “Cambrian explosion,” a historic era when plant and animal species rapidly multiplied after Ice Age glaciers receded.

“Big brands like Disney have to evaluate: Are we only going to access this market by licensing our content to Netflix, Hulu and others?” he said. “Or, can we go direct to the consumer with our own service?”

But a multiplicity of streaming services could easily overwhelm or confuse consumers. To get a full slate of programming, TV watchers may soon have to subscribe to several services instead of just one or two.

Among those options will be services like Netflix and

Hulu that offer a wide range of video from a variety of sources; cable-like “skinny bundles” such as FuboTV, Sling and YouTube TV that offer a variety of live channels; and channel- or network-specific services like Disney Plus.

Consider just AT&T’s plan to launch a three-tiered service this year centered on HBO. An entry-level bundle will offer mostly movies; a second, slightly more expensive tier will include original programming and newer movies. A third and still more expensive offering would add more WarnerMedia entertainment such as “Friends.”

The cost of multiple streaming services could quickly approach the average cost of a cable bill — not counting the cost of internet service. That’s around $107 per month, according to Leichtman Research Group.

“It’s unlikely any of the services individually can charge more than $10 per month,” Forrester’s Nail said. “The great unknown is how many individual streaming services people are willing to sign up for.”

Companies are already trying to tame this chaos by bundling multiple streaming services together. Amazon Prime customers can addon subscriptions to HBO, Showtime or Starz. Roku and Chromecast viewers can access their different services from a central place; Roku said Wednesday it will start selling in-app access to Showtime, Starz and other channels as well.

How should consumers deal with all the coming change?

“Be patient,” said Michael Greeson, president of research group TDG. “We’re in a time of dramatic change for the TV and video business. There’ll be great benefits, and question marks and consequences.”

Flip through your favorite cookbooks to choose several recipes that sound good and start a grocery list for the week.

Keep it simple (mostly). “Remember, you don’t have to cook extravagant dinners every night of the week,” Hoffmann said. “You’ll get just as much satisfaction from a simple dinner of grilled fish and veggies as you would from an elaborate multi-course feast. Save the ‘fancy’ dinners for special occasions and you’re sure to keep up with your new healthy home cooking habit.”

Hit the market. You can’t cook without ingredients, so

go to the grocery store armed with a list of every item you’ll need to cook healthy meals in the upcoming week.

Some people like to shop for the entire week, while others prefer making more frequent tips. Over time you’ll figure out what works best for you and your family. When you’re planning and shopping, focus on in-season fruits and veggies (they’ll be fresher and are often less expensive). Also, keep an eye out for good deals on cuts of lean meat that you can purchase and freeze for later.

Do your prep work in advance. “After you do your weekly shopping trip, spend some time prepping the food you purchased,” Hoffmann said. “This helps you save time when you’re ready to cook. Start by washing your produce. If you purchased a head of lettuce, this would be a great time to separate, clean and dry the leaves to be used for salads or lettuce wraps. Next, chop any vegetables you’ll be using in stir-fries, soups or salads over the next few days. These ingredients will be patiently waiting for you when you need them.”

Film critics choose ‘The Rider’ as best picture

By Verena Dobnik The Associated Press NEW YORK — The National Society of Film Critics on Saturday chose Chloe Zhao’s low-budget debut feature, “The Rider,” as best picture of 2018.

Director Alfonso Cuaron’s black-and-white “Roma” period piece set in modern Mexico won the most awards — as best picture runner-up, best foreign-language film and for best cinematography. Cuaron also got the award for best director.

The society of leading movie critics voted for Olivia Colman as best actress in “The Favourite,” and Ethan Hawke as best actor in “First Reformed.” The top accolade for best supporting actor went to Steve Yeun of “Burning,” while Regina King of “If Beale Street Could Talk” nabbed best supporting actress. About 40 of the society’s 64 members voted.

Best screenplay went to “The Death of Stalin,” and best non-fiction film to “Minding the Gap,” a documentary directed by Bing Liu about the complex friendship among three skateboarding young men, including himself, in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois.

The film critics society was founded in 1966, electing its voting critics from newspapers and other major U.S. media outlets. The 53rd annual awards were hosted by New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The sandwiches, salads, soups and other dishes are all homemade and equally scrumptious.

I can’t pass up the chicken salad on croissant, so I have to admit that I haven’t ventured to try anything else for a long, long time. So, that’s what I ordered — with green olives and celery — and I wasn’t disappointed. At about one-half pound, it is big enough (especially when combined with dessert) you can take half of it home for lunch the following day.

I watched the various salads go by on their way to other patrons and they looked fresh — and big. The turkey sandwich on a pretzel bun looked hearty and colorful, and the egg salad on a mini croissant was tempting.

And, there’s good coffee — the locally made Bunkhouse Joe is brewed just right.

Something else My Just Desserts does, which may not be as well known, is catering for private events (your place or theirs).

Study finds ‘radical underrepresentation’ for women in film

NEW YORK— Despite widespread attention and protest over gender inequality in film, a new study finds that the number of female directors in the top 250 domestic grossing films last year dipped to 8 percent.

That was down 3 percentage points from

2017, according to the 21st annual Celluloid Ceiling report released Thursday by the Center for the Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University. It was even below the 9 percent level achieved 20 years earlier in 1998.

Researchers found slight gains for women in other roles. In 2018, women comprised 20 percent of all directors, writers, producers,

executive directors, editors and cinematographers in the top 250 films. That’s up 2 percentage points from 2017.

The study’s author, Martha Lauzen, the executive director of San Diego State’s center, said such modest gains behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair, reveal an industry resistant to changing long-term gender inequity.

“The study provides no evidence that the mainstream film industry has experienced the profound positive shift predicted by so many industry observers over the last year,” Lauzen said.

“This radical underrepresentation is unlikely to be remedied by the voluntary efforts of a few individuals or a single studio. Without a large-scale effort mounted by the major players — the studios, talent agencies, guilds and associations — we are unlikely to see meaningful change. The dis-

tance from 8 percent to some semblance of parity is simply too vast.”

The largest gains, according to researchers, were among writers (16 percent, up 5 percentage points from 2017) and producers (21 percent, also up 5 percentage points from 2017).

The study also found that in 2018, just 1 percent of films employed 10 or more women in key off-camera roles, while 74 percent of films employed 10 or more men in such jobs.

Researchers also isolated the top 100 and the top 500 films in 2018, though results were similar. Women accounted for 16 percent of directors, writers, executive producers, producers, editors and cinematographers working on the top 100 films (no change from 2017), and 23 percent of the same roles on the top 500 films (an increase of 2 percentage points from 2017).
