Arnold, a silhouette artist for more than 30 years and famous for accuracy and exquisite interior detailing, creates priceless heirlooms, having done so for three of President George H.W. Bush’s grandchildren. The silhouettes hung in the White House. Arnold’s silhouettes contain delicate inside cuts, which are referred to as “European embellished style.” His work is prized by collectors. Arnold, of Nashville, Tennessee, currently tours 18 states, appearing in children’s specialty shops, such as The Grapevine, at 2 W. Broadway, in Alton, and leading department stores. Arnold learned the art of silhouette cutting from his mother, Garnett Arnold, of Hamilton, Ohio; Arnold considers his talent as a gift from God and is quick to give him all the glory. In 1990, Arnold was invited to the White

House to collaborate on a children’s book with Sharon Bush, when Arnold had the honor of meeting the former President George H.W. Bush and cutting the silhouettes of his grandchildren, a birthday gift for his wife, Barbara. The art of silhouette making originated in Europe in the early 1700s. Prior to the French Revolution, silhouettists were hired by the royal class. The featured artist would attend the many extravagant balls and cut out the distinguished profiles of the lords and ladies, capturing the latest fashions and elaborate wigs. Back then the black profile cutouts, now known as silhouettes, held negative connotation because of where and from who the name came. In 1760s France, finance minister Etienne de Silhouette was despised by the French people due to his merciless tax policies. In protest, as Silhouette was known for his hobby of cutting out paper profiles, apparently the latest fad at the time, according to Arnold, the peasants wore only black, mimicking Silhouette’s black paper cutouts. The saying went all over France, “We are dressing a la Silhouette. We are Silhouettes!” The art of silhouette cutting reached its heyday in the 1800s. Many European silhouettists immigrated and some became famous, catering to American politicians and influential, wealthy private citizens. Others traveled to county fairs and small towns, capturing the profiles and they hearts of ordinary folks. “Silhouettes remain as popular today as ever,” Arnold said. “In fact, they have become one of the most collectible art forms. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of silhouette cutters left, perhaps as few as fifteen in the United States. We of the computer age may be seeing the last generation of silhouette art-
ists.” Arnold visited Alton once, more than 10 years ago, during former ownership of The Grapevine, by Roberta Monroe, for whom he created silhouettes at the store.

ST. LOUIS — Experience St. Louis’ firstand-only Korean fried chicken, which is double-fried with a special batter that makes the chicken extra crispy, when Kimchi Guys, a casual restaurant, opens its doors to the public Friday, Feb. 1. Second St. Kimchi Guys’ hours on opening day are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kimchi Guys will occupy part of the first level of the newly-renovated, sixstory 50,000-square-foot building. James Lee Burke’s new novel is engaging, emotional mystery By Jeff Ayers Associated Press “The New Iberia Blues: a Dave Robicheaux Novel” (Simon and Schuster), by James Lee Burke James Lee Burke’s novels have mysteries that light the fuse of the story, but the almost poetic prose sets his novels apart. A boy that detective Dave Robicheaux knew almost 25 years ago left town to pursue his dream of becoming a Hollywood film director. Desmond Cormier found success and moves back with awards and respect. Robicheaux meets him not to congratulate him, but to inquire about the body of a young woman who was found brutally murdered near his property. Cormier says he has no idea what happened, but Robicheaux has his doubts.
Soon another suspect becomes the prime candidate when one of Robicheaux’s friends says he saw a man jump off a train and run away. He regrets not reporting it sooner, and it becomes clear that he witnessed the escape of an inmate named Hugo Tillinger who was in prison for murder and arson. He had claimed he was innocent and an organization known for helping prisoners overturn their convictions was looking into his case. The woman who met with Tillinger is Robicheaux’s murder victim. It seems like an open-and-shut case, but evidence and motive are never that transparent. This time the story is not about the mystery itself, but more about the lyrical journey into Robicheaux’s past and present that will keep the readers in awe.
tacos, a fried chicken sandwich and spicy barbecue pork sliders. So also highlights Kimchi Guys’ bibimbap, which is a popular traditional dish consisting of rice, mixed vegetables, a sweet and spicy chili pepper sauce, a fried egg and a choice of beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, or even a plant-based protein. A vegan menu also is available. Given the name “Kimchi Guys,” the menu revolves around kimchi in many forms.
Originating as far back as 37 BC, kimchi is a Korean side-dish staple consisting of salted and pickled vegetables, most commonly cabbage. Kimchi Guys’ menu offers four different kinds of kimchi, made in-house: spicy cabbage kimchi, spicy cucumber kimchi, spicy radish kimchi and white radish kimchi. “As a Korean-American, I am very excited to introduce Korean cuisine and Kimchi Guys to the wonderful city of St. Louis,” So said. “I can’t wait for the public to visit us on February first and experience what my team and I have been working so hard on for the last two years. On our Grand Opening day, I will be donating one-hundred percent of our net profits to the ALS Association of St. Louis, an organization I believe in.” Visit Kimchi Guys Friday, Feb. 1, to learn more. Madison County internet radio host brings Minneapolis funk to the masses
By Tera Wiseman For The Edge
Godfrey, Illinois’ Christopher Arnel had a difficult childhood. He found refuge in music and eventually stumbled upon an artist by the name of Prince. “I had been raised on country music — Waylon, Willie, Conway, Freddy Fender…I had never heard any other music before I heard Prince for the first time,” Arnel recalled. “It was exciting, it was new, it was different and even at five years of age, it was a ‘godsmack.’ I knew then that this was the guy I was going to follow for as long as his train was on the tracks. And, thirty-eight years later here I am.” As a result of his love for Prince, Arnel became an administrator for the “Uptown Minneapolis Music Scene” Facebook Page, which was originally created by Jimmy Vinson. While moderating that page, he developed a desire to reach out to artists and musicians from Minneapolis, Minnesota, or former employees and/or business people who had worked with Prince, conduct interviews in a Master Class format and publish them on the Uptown Minneapolis Music Scene page. Not only did he want to highlight Prince and his enormous impact on the music community, but he wanted to feature new and upcoming Minneapolis artists. This included those who continue to elevate the electric funk that Prince cultivated in the ‘70s and ‘80s, as well as those who were found forging their own sound on the Minneapolis streets. Arnel is a bonafide Prince connoisseur and can recite every detail of his rise to fame. He has seen every video. He’s heard every version of every song except for Prince’s unreleased music catalog at Paisley Park. He has immersed himself completely into the world of the artist, including dedicating a whole tattoo sleeve on his left arm to artwork, signatures, song lyrics, significant dates and times, etc. Arnel’s first interview for Uptown Minneapolis Music Scene was with the family of Charles Huntsberry, a k a “Big Chick,” the famously blonde giant who was Prince’s bodyguard in the ‘80s during “Purple Rain” fame. This interview was published as text on the Facebook Page. From there, the Uptown Minneapolis Music Scene Master Class exploded into a podcast that has grown exponentially into a weekly radio show on the internet-based Real Music Radio at 9

p.m Tuesdays. You can catch his show every Tuesday at realmusicradio.com or right after the broadcast on www.mixcloud.com/ umms_master_class. Arnel conducts telephone interviews with most of his featured artists, recording the interview in the home studio of Alphonso Harried, of Alton, Illinois. Harried sends the recorded interview to Jeffrey Luna, who is the owner/operator of Real Music Radio, with a song list that is hand-picked by Arnel, to highlight the featured artist’s music. He also throws in new Minneapolis artists’ songs, some Prince, and even the Backstreet Boys for good measure. “When selecting talent to be on Real Music Radio, personally, I’m very selective,” Luna said. “It’s vital that anyone representing the station respect music and the artist. After listening to Christopher, I knew he was a perfect fit with his creative and professional approach to interviews. With the addition of Master Class, we have now reached over 200,000 listeners world-wide.” Arnel treats each artist like the Prince of his heart, regardless of their success or exposure. Some of the up-and-coming artists that Arnel has interviewed include Nooky Jones, Alex Rossi, Tracey Blake, JP Delaire and Joyann Parker, who had the number one album last year on The Roots Music Report’s Top Soul Blues Album Chart. He also interviewed Allen Beaulieu, who was the primary photographer and friend of Prince in
the ‘70s-’80s. Beaulieu photographed three album covers and toured extensively with the artist before releasing a book of Prince photography, “Before the Rain,” last November. And, while we’re on the subject of books, Arnel has been used as a source in two books, “The Rise of Prince: 1958-1988,” by Alex Hahn, and “Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984,” by Duane Tudahl. Another legendary artist who Arnel has interviewed, and subsequently become friends with, is Jellybean Johnson. Johnson was the drummer for The Time and produced hit songs for Alexander O’Neal, Nona Hendryx and New Edition. In 1990, Johnson co-produced and played guitar on the bombshell track “Black Cat” with Janet Jackson. “Christopher Arnel is THE TRUTH! Christopher Arnel is a bad man!” Johnson has said of Arnel. Such words are only bestowed upon the most respected individuals in Johnson’s universe. Arnel recently celebrated his birthday on the show with another Time alum, Jeffree “JMak” Mak, who now lives locally and stopped by the studio to sing and play the keyboard for Arnel’s special day. Arnel has formed some special friendships and gained family in Minneapolis through his Master Class interviews. It was his long-time dream to see Minneapolis first-hand and visit Paisley Park, where
Prince lived and recorded music, visit the various clubs where Prince played including First Avenue, where most of the concert scenes for Purple Rain was filmed, and visit the home where Prince grew up, as well as the house used in the 1984 movie where additional scenes were shot. Arnel keeps in touch with the late Charles “Big Chick” Huntsberry’s family and has been treated like an extended family member by Big Chick’s widow and children. The family gave Arnel an autographed poster of Big Chick and some rare photographs of the former bodyguard and Prince during the “Purple Rain” days. Big Chick towered 6-feet-6-inches tall and weighed more than 350 pounds. Since Arnel shares the same tall stature, Big Chick’s family encouraged him to try on Big Chick’s “Purple Rain” tour jacket. It was a perfect fit. Just like Arnel and the Minneapolis music community — a perfect fit. Now when Arnel returns to Minneapolis, he is “treated like royalty,” he said. The artists he has interviewed remember him and are appreciative of his efforts to get their music heard. Many of them have been unknowns outside of the Minneapolis market and are excited to have their music featured on an international radio show. Real Music Radio recently sponsored a birthday party for Jellybean Johnson last November at the Minneapolis Music Café in St. Paul, Minnesota. Johnson performed his new song, “Put Some Jelly on It,” and several other artists performed including Tracey Blake, Alex Rossi, Danny Kusz, Lingo CashCount, Corey Medina & The Brothers, Illism, JMak & The Funksexuals. Former Prince bodyguard Wally Stafford was the emcee for the event. This coming April 25, Real Music Radio is hosting a concert with artists, such as Blake, who are featured on the radio station. Additional artists and the venue are still to be announced. More exciting news for the coming year includes a UK Master Class, which will continue to serve up the funk on the international front. Both Arnel and the new host will be approaching more widely known artists who play other genres of music. But never fear, the consistent focus will be bringing the conspicuous Minneapolis sound to the masses. In the meantime, tune in to Master Class on Real Music Radio at 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights to realmusicradio.com and click on the “Play Now” link.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver dies at 83
By Hillel Italie AP National Writer
NEW YORK — Mary Oliver, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose rapturous odes to nature and animal life brought her critical acclaim and popular affection, has died. She was 83. Bill Reichblum, Oliver’s literary executor, said she died Thursday at her home in Hobe Sound, Florida. The cause of death was lymphoma. “Thank you, Mary Oliver, for giving so many of us words to live by,” Hillary Clinton wrote in a tweet. Ava DuVernay quoted from Oliver’s poem “Praying” and fans online shared their favorite lines. Author of more than 15 poetry and essay collections, Oliver wrote brief, direct pieces that sang of her worship of the outdoors and disdain for greed, despoilment and other human crimes. One of her favorite adjectives
Food From page 10 it just tastes so good, you can’t stop). Large portions can be a really good thing because you can have enough to take with you and make a second meal. I have a thing for having leftovers the next day for lunch. Sometimes, I purposely order more than I will eat in one sitting, just so I can have that lunch to look forward to. The wood-fired burgers actually consist of two — count them — two one-quarter-pound patties. That’s definitely two meals in one. Other menu selections include a choice of salads, wings, pulled pork, ham, barbecue baked beans, five-cheese mac & cheese, just to name a few off the menu. Box lunches, party
was “perfect,” and rarely did she apply it to people. Her muses were owls and butterflies, frogs and geese, the changes of the seasons, the sun and the stars. “In my outward appearance and life habits I hardly change — there’s never been a day that my friends haven’t been able to say, and at a distance, ‘There’s Oliver, still standing around in the weeds. There she is, still scribbling in her notebook,’” Oliver wrote in “Long Life,” a book of essays published in 2004. “But, at the center: I am shaking; I am flashing like tinsel.” Like her hero Walt Whitman, whom she would call the brother she never had, Oliver didn’t only observe mushrooms growing in a rainstorm or an owl calling from a black branch; she longed to know and become one with what she saw. She might be awed by the singing of goldfinches or, as in the poem “White Flowers,” overcome by a long nap in a field.

As a bonus, the chicken that’s served has no added preservatives or hormones, the beef is all natural and antibiotic-free, and the bread is baked fresh and brought in from St. Louis’ Fazio’s Bakery on The Hill. There’s even craft beer in the bottle or on draft to top off your meal. A special frozen custard, made with Van Gold Tahitian vanilla (Tahiti is known for its special, sweet vanilla beans) is available, but I was definitely too full to partake. Maybe go sometime in the afternoon for custard only — or buy it in a take-home quart. Fire-N-Smoke opens at 11 a.m. every day. Visit fnsbbq.com for more information. Never in my life had I felt myself so near that porous line where my own body was done with and the roots and the stems and the flowers began Her poetry books included “White Pine,” ‘’West Wind” and the anthology “Devotions,” which came out in 2017. She won the Pulitzer in 1984 for “American Primitive” and the National Book Award in 1992 for “New and Selected Poems.” In 1998, she received the Lannan Literary Award for lifetime achievement. Her fans ranged from fellow poets Stanley Kunitz and Rita Dove to Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. “Although few poets have fewer human beings in their poems than Mary Oliver, it is ironic that few poets also go so far to help us forward,” Stephen Dobyns wrote of her in The New York Times.
Oliver was a native of Maple Heights in suburban Cleveland, and endured what she called a “dysfunctional” family in part by writing poems and building huts of sticks and grass in the nearby woods. Edna St. Vincent Millay was an early influence and, while in high school, Oliver wrote to the late poet’s sister, Norma, asking if she could visit Millay’s house in Austerlitz, New York. Norma Millay agreed and Oliver ended up spending several years there, organizing Edna St. Vincent Millay’s papers. While in Austerlitz, she also met the photographer Molly Malone Cook — “I took one look and fell, hook and tumble,” Oliver later wrote — and the two were partners until Cook’s death, in 2005. Much of Oliver’s work was dedicated to Cook. Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but never graduated and later scorned much of her education as “a preestablished collection of certainties.”

Book of love letters limited to 250 numbered copies The Edge ST. LOUIS— “With Ten Thousand Kisses” is a book of 56 letters, many with multiple pages, and messages written by Eugene Field to his adored wife, Julia, spanning a period of years from 1872, during the couple’s earliest days of courtship, until just prior to Eugene’s death in 1895. Each of the original handwritten letters is presented alongside a transcription. Facsimile copies of the Fields’ wedding invitation and photos of the young couple are included in the approximately 225-page book. This collector’s edition, with foreword by St. Louis personality Charlie Brennan, is limited to 250 numbered copies. This book is published by Marianne and Peter Gleich with

The Field House Museum’s book release event includes an evening of music, hors d’oeuvres, and remarks by Brennan to launch the private publishing of this beautiful hardbound book. The evening will feature lovely and romantic harp melodies and an exclusive showing of Julia Field’s wedding dress. & Calico Cat.” While living in the home, Roswell Field became the key attorney in the Dred & Harriet Scott Freedom Suit when he formulated the legal strategy that propelled the case to federal court. The house is designated as a National Historic Landmark and has an attached museum featuring the many collections of the Field House Museum along with traveling exhibits. Fans buy ‘Little House on the Prairie’ star’s memorabilia Associated Press GENOA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — More than 200 items belonging to “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert and her husband, Emmy-winning actor Timothy Busfield, have been purchased in an estate sale in Michigan. Items sold in the American Eagle Auction & Appraisal Company online auction this month included a red wedding dress, signed memorabilia and awards Gilbert received, The Livingston Daily Press & Argus reported. Interest in the sale exceeded expectations, said auction house owner Kenny Lindsay. The online auction catalog received about 58,000 views and more than 300 bids were placed. “The amount of exposure the auction got was off the charts,” Lindsay said, though he declined to disclose how much money was raised during the auction.
Lindsay said one standout item was a photograph signed by the cast of “Little House on the Prairie” that the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Minnesota purchased for $1,200. “Another cool piece was sheet music signed by composer David Rose, who wrote music and the theme song for ‘Little House on the Prairie’ ... it went for $1,100,” Lindsay said. Redford resident Stacy Luoma was one of the bidders. The 45-year-old took home a variety of items, including a nightgown, dresser, quilts and boots. Luoma said she grew up watching Gilbert, who is one of her favorite actresses. “You’re buying the story to go with it,” Luoma said. “I don’t think I would have bought as much as I did if it weren’t them (Gilbert and Busfield).” Gilbert and Busfield had been living in Livingston County since 2013, but relocated this year to New York City.
In this Jan. 14, 2019 photo, Stacy Luoma, right, holds up the hand-made roses and butterflies knit top nightgown she bid on and won in the Gilbert/Busfield estate auction, against her grandmother Arbilla Moore, in Genoa Township. (Gillis Benedict | Livingston County Daily Press & Argus via AP)

Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum honors life of JFK through photographs
The Edge SPRINGFIELD — An exhibition of photographs tracing John F. Kennedy’s private life and public trajectory opens at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on Friday, Feb. 15. Some are iconic images of Camelot, while many have rarely been seen before. “American Visionary: John F. Kennedy’s Life and Times” shows Kennedy as a joyful boy playing in the ocean and a troubled president working in the Oval Office, as a public figure adored by crowds and a father alone with his baby daughter. Jacqueline Kennedy is there, too — as a happy bride, an elegant first lady and a heartbroken widow. The exhibition, one of the most exhaustively researched collections of Kennedy photos ever assembled, runs through May
19. It brings together images from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, Getty Images, private collections and the Kennedy family archives. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum’s Alan Lowe, executive director, called the exhibit “a wonderful snapshot of JFK’s life.” “We are honored to bring ‘American Visionary’ to Springfield,” Lowe said. “Not only are the photos wonderful, but they offer a chance to reflect on a man who, like Abraham Lincoln, served his nation in a time of great challenge and gave his life in that service.” There is no extra fee to see the exhibition. It will be included in regular admission prices. The exhibition is based on the book “JFK: A Vision for America,” by Stephen

Photographers such as Ed Clark, Lisl Steiner, Ralph Crane and Steve Schapiro captured the optimism and challenges of the early 1960s in some of the finest and most vivid images of the period. Highlights of “American Visionary” include: • 1953 photo booth snapshot of the Kennedy newlyweds, possibly taken on their honeymoon • candid 1958 photograph of Kennedy playing with his baby daughter, Caroline, in her bassinet • 1960 photograph of people peering at Kennedy through the window as he prepares for a campaign speech • 1961 photograph of the First Couple and others heading to Kennedy’s inauguration ceremony, with the White House blanketed in snow • haunting photograph of the first lady P. Alton Little Theater’s inaugural Director’s Showcase presents ‘Maybe This Time’ The Edge ALTON — Alton Little Theater embarks on an exciting new venture called the “Director’s Showcase” and will produce a new play by California playwright and St. Louis native Michael Madden. The quirky and touching comedy called “Maybe This Time” looks at the pitfalls and passions of dating in middle age, and audiences of all ages will relate to the longing that four people have to find someone who will truly like and love them. Alton Little Theater’s 86th season directors Lee Cox, Gail Drillinger, Kevin Frakes and Brant McCance take on the roles of staging and portraying the “daters” while Alton Little Theater’s newly engaged couple, Kayla Robinson and Sawyer Burton, take on the very funny roles of being the “talking brains” (with libidos and quips blazing) for multiple couples. Cox, the coordinator for the production, also decided to try utilizing a real-life “barista” (Alton Panera’s favorite Nick Trapp) instead of employing sound effects. “We always have fun with Nick, who is great with accents and different personas — and we though he would add a visual and greater comedic effect to scene changes,” Cox said. The play, and permission from the author to produce the production, was most fortuitous. Alton Little Theater active board member Kathy Bredenkoetter, of St. Charles, Missouri, saw the play
“Magical Winter’s Feast with Harry Potter & Friends”
Due to the recent winter storm and the postponement of Alton Little Theater’s “Magical Winter’s Feast with Harry Potter & Friends” was rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, at Lewis and Clark Community College’s Commons, in Godfrey, Illinois. Ticket sales are on again. Tickets cost $40 for a four-course dinner, show, magic and contests. Tickets are available by calling 618-4623205 or visit altonlittletheater.org. when it was produced at the Gaslight Theater. She got in touch with Madden’s sister (an actress in New York City) and she gave Cox contact information for Madden, who now lives in San Diego. Cox and Madden had a long conversation on her monthly trek back home from visiting grandchildren in Wisconsin, and voila — an agreement was reached to allow Alton Little Theater to produce the show as the inaugural Director’s Showcase. The shows will run at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3. The playwright will be on hand on opening night for a Q&A with the audience — and then theater fans are invited to gather at the Alton Applebee’s Grill

& Bar (which is referenced in the script), at 319 Homer Adams Pkwy., for an opening night celebration. The romantic comedy is set in a “local” coffee shop and since Alton Little Theater has just expanded its coffee and wine bar, the directors decided that theater lovers attending the show should enjoy a free libation as part of the $20 ticket price. Frakes will be creating an on-stage coffee bar 24 hours after the current production of “On Golden Pond” concludes, and the seven actors will take on a week of intense rehearsals. “It’s a little intimidating to have the writer present at the show, but also thrilling,” Cox said. “As a writer myself, I can appre-
ciate how difficult it is to have someone else put their ‘spin’ on your work — but I also think Michael will be able to ‘sell’ this show many times over. So, he will witness many interpretations different directors will have — but I think everyone will agree that this play entertains and moves people to laughter and self-recognition over and over again. “I’m so glad that Michael became an actor and then a playwright in middle age — because so many of us at ALT can relate,” Cox continued. “We talk about the show and certain lines as much as we rehearse. Nearly all adults have been on a date — sometime — with good, bad, humorous and sad results. This play has touching vignettes about everything we long for and it helps us remember — and yet laugh!” Tickets are available through the Alton Little Theater Box Office at 618-462-3205 or online at altonlittletheater.org. The production is recommended for ages 16 and older.

Netflix has no plans to cut ‘Bird Box’ scene despite outcry By Mark Kennedy AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK — Netflix’s post-apocalyptic survival film “Bird Box” is drawing criticism for using footage of a real fiery train disaster but the streaming giant has no plans to remove it. The footage concerns a 2013 tragedy in the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic when an unattended train carrying crude oil rolled down an incline, came off the tracks and exploded into a massive ball of fire, killing 47 people. Netflix licensed the footage of the disas-
ter from the stock image vendor Pond 5 and used it in “Bird Box” in an early TV news montage to set up its horrific premise. The Sandra Bullock-led thriller is about monstrous entities that compel any human who sees them to quickly try to kill themselves. To survive, they don blindfolds. In a statement to The Associated Press, Pond 5 said the footage “was taken out of context” and the company wanted to “sincerely apologize.” Pond 5 footage of the crash was also used in Netflix’s “Travelers.” But a Netflix spokesman told the AP on Thursday that it wasn’t planning to cut
the footage from “Bird Box,” saying, “We will keep the clip in the movie.” But he acknowledged that Netflix will be looking at ways to do things differently moving forward. The mayor of Lac-Megantic, Julie Morin, has decried the use of the footage in an interview with The Canadian Press, calling it “a lack of respect.” Criticism has also been leveled by Canadians on Twitter, who argue that the footage may trigger feelings of PTSD and additional victimization. But the Lac-Megantic mayor and a Netflix representative talked Thursday and Morin said the conversation was produc-
tive. “They’ve committed to reflecting with their partners on the use of these images so that the situation does not repeat itself. We also felt they were sensitive to our citizens’ recovery. I’m satisfied with this exchange,” Morin said in a statement. It’s not the first time “Bird Box” has caused an outcry. YouTube is cracking down on a wave of users committing socalled “Bird Box Challenges” — like driving a car while blindfolded. Associated Press reporter Tracey Lindeman in Ottawa contributed to this report.

RBG biopic ‘On the Basis of Sex’ delivers important message
By Robert Grubaugh Contributing columnist There’s nothing like a biopic on a snowy Monday afternoon to get the juices flowing. In this case, the picture was one I’d literally been waiting months to see. “On the Basis of Sex” reminded me a lot of “The Post” from last year and I would recommend it similarly. “On the Basis of Sex” also is about a topic and subject matter that I find impressive and important. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a popular American figure, even rating her own documentary feature last year. Moreover, she is a catalyst for the ever-changing world in which we live. The new movie focuses on a specific segment of her life, one that first brought her to prominence in the national gender-rights campaign, and shows us what made the legend start her crusade in the first place. Ginsburg (Felicity Jones, the British Oscar winner) enrolled at Harvard Law School in 1956, one of only nine women permitted to do so by conservative male legal scholars (embodied by Sam Waterston as Dean Erwin Griswold, her antagonist and later solicitor general of the United States). Her pluck and determination were the foundation for a successful academic career that ultimately led her to finish her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree at Columbia University, a private Ivy League research university, after her husband, Martin D. Ginsberg (1954-2010), moved to take a job in his own field of tax law. Bader Ginsberg always had a sharp mind and a fierce attacking spirit, but the constant insult of failing to land her own law career drove her to become one of the first tenured female professors at Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, teaching the next generation of legal eagles. There is, as you can see, quite a bit of exposition in this movie before the actual action of the plot gets underway. As a matter of fact, I thought the build-up was a nice way to show how Bader Ginsberg and her husband were equals, both driven by their love of the law, but both also understanding that her destiny was that of a “great woman.” The demonstration of what this means to their children, particularly daughter Jane (Cailee Spaeny), is also one of the better relationships examined by the film. Frustration over being relegated to teaching gets to Bader Ginsberg, but her husband comes to the rescue with the 1970 Denver, Colorado, appellate court case of Charles L. Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue. It’s been a while since high school civics class, but history has a way of sticking with you. Moritz was a bachelor who was denied reimbursement of his taxes for money he’d laid out to a nurse who cared for his ill mother while he continued to work, simply
Felicity Jones portrays Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a scene from “On the Basis of Sex.” because he was a man and men weren’t thought of as approved caregivers. The door that this opened for the Ginsbergs was one that showed equal protection for the sexes under the law — as portended by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution — as being rejected in federal court. In order to garner support for their case, Bader Ginsberg turns for help to the American Civil Liberties Union and its legal director, Mel Wulf (Justin Theroux). She twists his arm with the help of their shared hero, feminist pioneer Dorothy Kenyon (Kathy Bates).
Better armed with Wulf’s resources and banner, Bader Ginsberg takes on the U.S. government, which counters her argument by presenting its defense of the American family as its reason for upholding the lower court’s ruling and 177 others that hold men and women to different legal standards. Something this repugnant was able to withstand for nearly 200 years in our nation’s history, but that’s not the way it’s supposed to be. That’s my take-away from this movie and one day, I hope, for my four nieces and two
Jonathan Wenk | Focus Features via AP goddaughters to understand that the law can’t stop them from being who they want to be simply because they are women. Bader Ginsburg is a big part of why this is so and why she’s now served more than one-quarter of a century on the U.S. Supreme Court. I wish her a lasting recovery for the cancer treatment that is currently causing her to miss this term’s oral arguments. Godspeed, RBG! “On the Basis of Sex” runs 115 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive content. I give this film three stars out of four.
