Sending help to Haiti Local seamstress looks to fill need for dresses
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge When there is an obvious need to help others, some people turn their heads to ignore the need, some people just feel helpless and don’t do anything and some people see an opportunity to make a difference. Carol Seibold, owner of Alexandra’s Alteration Shop, and her crew of volunteers are the people who step up to make a difference. Carol’s sister, Dr. Kay Kelly, is a pediatrician who practices in the Chicago area. Dr. Kelly previously went on a medical mission to Haiti, where she worked with El Shaddai Ministries, and medically tended to 900 orphans, about half the number that were in the area orphanages. That was before Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010. Since the time that Carol and her group of volunteers began their mission to cloth the young girls in need by making dresses for them, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the island, and at this date it is estimated that at least 200,000 are dead as a result. These figures mean that the need for the dresses has become even greater and more urgent. Carol’s sister, Dr. Kelly, had planned to return to Haiti on Feb. 19, to continue the work with El Shaddai Ministries, before the news of the devastating earthquake. This became the goal date
February 4, 2010
to complete as many dresses as possible to send with the doctor, in order to save shipping costs. Dr. Kelly is still planning to leave for Haiti on the same date, pending the allowance for travel to Haiti at that time. She still plans to take as many of the dresses at that time that her suitcase can hold, but it is very likely that there will be an excess of dresses left behind. The group had already completed 170 dresses as of the time this story was written. It is the volunteers’ hope that if anyone else in the area is planning to travel to the earthquake ravaged area, that they would consider taking as many of the dresses they can possibly transport. The goal is to get them to the people who need them as quickly as possible. Sending them with a person rather than shipping not only saves costs, but will insure the likelihood that the clothing doesn’t get stolen and end up on the black market. “I don’t know medicine,” said Carol Seibold, “ but I know how to sew.” This is her perspective on how anyone can get involved. Use what you know to help others. She is still taking volunteers, even if you don’t have seamstress experience. Maybe you can cut out one of the simple patterned sundresses or maybe you can iron. Whatever you feel you can do, the need is there. The group has been meeting on Wednesday evenings, at approximately 4:30 p.m. until about
8 p.m., sewing away as quickly as they can. They still are in need of donated items. Donated needs for the dresses are: sheets, pillowcases, yard goods (cotton blends and cotton only – this is a very hot and humid climate), bias tape, ribbons, laces and trims. These can come from your closets, Goodwill or Salvation Army and can be used, but in clean and good condition. Monetary donations are also needed to help purchase the items needed to complete the dresses – i.e., buy more material, sewing notions, thread, etc. or to use for shipping costs to send whatever dresses don’t get taken by traveling volunteers. “What is so cool about this is we are using what people don’t need or want. Maybe they started a quilt project and have felt guilty about not finishing it. By donating the unused project material, they feel better knowing that their donated items are going to a great cause,” said Carol Seibold. You can drop the items by her shop at 416 Hillsboro Ave., in Edwardsville, or you can mail donations to Alexandra’s Alteration Shop, 416 Hillsboro Dr., Edwardsville, IL, 62025. If you need more information or have questions, you can call the shop at 656-1100. For information about El Shaddai Ministries, visit www.ESMIhome.org.

People People planner GIR announces drag race schedule For racers and spectators alike, the 2010 Gateway International Raceway drag strip schedule provides a full season of great events, including more Bracket Championship Series races and more Outlaw All-Stars races. The season kicks off March 6-7 with the NHRA chassis certification, with the first race of the year being the annual Icebreaker on Saturday, March 20. The first Midnight Madness Presented by Monster Energy Drink is the following Friday, March 26. A total of seven stand-alone races for the Gateway Bracket Championship Series have been scheduled, with Monster Mopar also counting towards bracket points. One of the new changes for 2010 has been the inclusion of several Thursday night slick tire test-and-tunes. “Our NHRA Drags Street Legal Style Presented by AAA runs with our Street Car Shootout Series and our Doc’s Harley-Davidson Quick Street Bike Series and we heard from our racers and spectators that they wanted an additional night for slicks,” said GIR Drag Strip Manager Rich Schaefer. A popular addition to last year’s schedule was the Outlaw All-Stars, a day of heads-up racing focusing on racing for the trophy with the fastest car going to the Winner’s Circle. After hearing from the fans in the offseason, eight OAS races have been scheduled for this year. “We started the Outlaw All-Stars after our track historian, Bret Kepner, did some research and created a format that would be compelling to both the racers and the fans,” Schaefer said. “We at Gateway and certainly the drag racing
community feel Bret did a great job with the program and we hope to improve on the series in 2010.” Most of GIR’s bigger events, such as Muscle Car Reunion and Nostalgia Drags, MegaBuck$, and Monster Mopar, have retained their usual dates. One big change, however, has been the moving of the All Harley Drags Association event. In the past, AHDRA’s brand of twowheeled excitement ran in the spring, but due to weather issues, the three-day event has been moved to Sept. 24-26. For the full 2010 Gateway International Raceway drag strip schedule, visit: http:// w w w . g a t e w a y r a c e w a y. c o m / 2 0 1 0 _ DragSchedule.pdf. Race fans can follow all the action throughout the season at Gateway International Raceway on its official Twitter site at Twitter.com/GatewayRaceway and its official page on Facebook, Facebook.com/ GatewayRaceway.
Garden to present “Images of Costa Rica” “Images of Costa Rica,” an exhibit of stunning images by nature photographer Gregory Basco will be on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden from Jan. 8 through Mar. 14. The photographs document the exquisite natural beauty and rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. The exhibit will be displayed through Mar. 14 on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m daily and is included with Garden admission. A political scientist by training, Gregory Basco has researched environmental politics and ecotourism in Costa Rica’s conservation
sector for nearly 15 years. He is also a former Missouri Botanical Garden employee, having worked in the Garden’s education division. Basco now dedicates himself full-time to photography and his Costa Rica photo tour company, Foto Verde Tours. His photographs have been published by Canon, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, and Newsweek and have appeared in numerous magazines, books, calendars, and public exhibits. Because Basco believes a good nature photograph should be captured in camera, he minimizes post-production work in the computer, limiting it to the common steps necessary for processing digital images. “I hope my images represent more than a simple documentation of nature,” said Basco. “I strive to capture images that are truly art and that portray to the viewer the mystery, abundance, and wonder of Costa Rica’s ecosystems, flora, and fauna. I hope I’ve succeeded, and that my passion for rainforests and the stunning biodiversity they contain shows through in the images.” The Missouri Botanical Garden conducts research in the rugged region of Mesoamerica, which is known for exceptional biological diversity. In Costa Rica, the Garden has a botanist in-country who leads a collaborative project to produce a Spanish-language manual of Costa Rican plants. “Images of Costa Rica” is included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Children ages 12 and under and Garden members are free. For general information, visit www.

Tr a v i s Hill formerly of Sophomore and Adam Barr formerly of Bi-Level decided it was time to persue other endeavors and after years of wanting to work together decided it was time. They recruited Vince Norton to play guitar and David Chapman for bass. There was an instantanious vibe in the first jam sessions and they knew they had something great. Here is what they have to say about it: “It’s about time that we did something so real and so organic that we didn’t have to bend over backwards to explain what it is. The music is a rocking funking explosion complete with blues hooks, jazz chops and soulful melodies. We’re not trying to be anything but a sum of our parts. Hopefully our music will be the sound track to a new generation of rockers, punkers, funksters and soulsters. At the very least, we hope these songs will make you feel the groove.” For more info on The Goodtime Engineers, visit www.myspace.com/ thegoodtimeengineers.

Music Tuning in Chamber Chorus to perform “Vespers” The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus has always prided itself on presenting a cappella vocal works by composers whose music is most often heard in symphony halls and opera houses. The fourth concert of this current season is a perfect example. While not an obscure work, and one which held great significance to the composer, Tchaikovsky’s “Vespers” has never been performed in St. Louis! Professor John Stewart, an acknowledged expert in Russian repertoire, will direct this performance. His Washington University choir joins the Chamber Chorus for this concert. To reflect how the “Vespers” would originally have been perfor m e d , t h e p ro g r a m w i l l intersperse the movements with music from other appropriate composers. For example, Igor Stravinsky contributes a Credo written in an intentionally archaic style. Also, to honor the venue of Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church, both choirs will sing music of Polish composers. A highlight of the program will certainly be performances of two works by Yakov Gubanov, a former student of Shostakovich and currently a composer and teacher at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. Both pieces will be new to St. Louis audiences with “Psalmus XXVII” receiving its world premiere at this concert. Gubanov and his wife will be traveling to St. Louis to hear the Chamber Chorus sing his music. Join the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus for “Tchaikovsky’s Vespers,” Sunday, February 21 at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church. Parking is free. For more information about the concert, and tickets, call 636-4584343.
Symphony Orchestra in this unique concert that combines hilarious visuals and live music. The concert features the extraordinary scores by legendary Warner Bros. Studios composers Carl Stalling and Milt Franklyn synchronized perfectly to cartoon shorts (the cartoons themselves are projected onto a giant screen suspended above the orchestra). Guests can expect to hear and see Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote and others in favorite Looney Tunes classics such as “What’s Opera, Doc?,” “The Rabbit of Seville,” “Baton Bunny,” “Long-Haired Hare,” “Corny Concerto” and many more. In creating “Bugs Bunny on Broadway,” George Daugherty recognized that Looney Tunes shorts were not only exceptional examples of original animation, but were also incredible musical scores, introducing millions of children (and adults) to classical music for more than four decades. Daugherty also recognized that the most popular and enduring of the classic Warner Bros. Studios cartoon scores were those that had taken familiar classical pieces (inspired by Wagner, Rossini, and Strauss) as a jumping-off point for wildly original animated antics. Tickets for “Bugs Bunny on Broadway” are $80-$35 and are available now at SLSO’s Box Office, online at www.slso.org, or by phone at 314.534.1700. “Avatar”
James Cameron’s 3-D epic has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly re v o l u t i o n a r y, a s p e c t a c l e t h a t m i l l i o n s w i l l f i n d adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. The plot is a little like the American frontier circa the 1800s, only transposed to the year 2154 on the faraway moon Pandora, the home of Native American-like, aqua blue, 10-foot tall creatures called the Na’vi. Arriving are imperialistic humans to plunder, and scientists to study. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) leads a team that explores in Na’vi bodies, avatars, controlled remotely. A sense of discovery — of Cameron’s digital world of Pandora, of the impressive techno-filmmaking — makes “Avatar” often thrilling. The environmentalist and anti-war messages resonate with contemporary troubles, but they also seem odd coming from such a swaggering behemoth of a movie. One senses Cameron’s zest lies in the battle, not in peace. With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. RATED: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. RUNNING TIME: 161 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and half stars out of four.
“The Book of Eli”
In the future, according to “The Book of Eli,” we’ll all dress like we’re in a Nine Inch Nails video. A meteorite and a subsequent war 30 years earlier has scorched the earth and the population, who outfit themselves in goggles and leather. Across this charred land strides our Christian cowboy, Eli (Denzel Washington), a mysterious, solitary man who carries the last remaining Bible in his backpack, along with a knife and a shotgun. Eli is a prophet carrying The Word, and “The Book of Eli” suggests mankind will be saved by it. The Christian theme notwithstanding, “The Book of Eli” is really only a sepia-colored, shoot-’em-up Western. The Hughes brothers (“Menace II Society”) let nary a bullet or arrow fly without sending their cameras behind to track it in slowmotion. Washington and Gary Oldman (as a frustrated dictator trying to steal the Bible) create sparks and help drive the film forward. With Mila Kunis in post-apocalyptic chic and Tom Waits as a paranoid shopkeeper. RATED: R for some brutal violence and language. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“44 Inch Chest”
Profane, irreverent bluster by five loud men might carry a choice scene, but it cannot carry an entire movie. The makers of this British drama needn’t have bothered trying without the supremely talented crew they rounded up. Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson and Stephen Dillane manage to make a passable time out of this densely packed but ultimately slight exercise in extreme manliness. Reuniting with “Sexy Beast” writers Louis Mellis and David Scinto, Winstone stars as a manly man reduced to heartsick puppy after his wife (Joanne Whalley) says she’s met someone else. McShane, Hurt, Wilkinson and Dillane play Winstone’s buddies, who step in with bad intent toward their pal’s rival. Throw these five guys in a room to cuss and bellow — and that’s mainly all first-time director Malcolm Venville does — and some sparks will fly. Despite the dark story, it’s fitfully fun to watch the actors trade turns as alpha male of the moment. RATED: R for pervasive strong language including sexual references, and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“The Spy Next Door”
Jackie Chan. Boring pen salesman. But really an ace CIA agent who’s retiring from the spy game to marry the single mom (Amber Valletta) next door. Only her kids (Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley and Alina Foley) can’t stand him because they think he’s a boring pen salesman. So she goes away and he volunteers to babysit to win over the little ones. Except these Russian spies come after him and the children ... You buying any of this? Neither are we. Like many action stars, Chan is looking for a piece of the lucrative family market. He’ll need to keep looking after this latest from director Brian Levant, who specializes in awful family fare (“Jingle All the Way,” “Are We There Yet?”). This sad little movie is built entirely to set up Chan’s stunt and fight sequences, the action more tolerable than the movie’s lame jokes, but barely. With Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez. RATED: PG for sequences of action violence and some mild rude humor. RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Extraordinary Measures”
This medical drama has been marketed as another “Blind Side,” a true story about quiet heroism, doing the right thing and overcoming great odds. But imagine if “The Blind Side” had focused on the legal processes necessary for Michael Oher’s adoption instead of the football and spunky Sandra Bullock and you have an idea of the strange path “Extraordinary Measures” takes on its road to inspiration. The movie tells the fictionalized story of the Crowley family, whose two youngest children are afflicted with Pompe disease, a metabolic disorder that leads to muscle degeneration and short life expectancy. The dad (Brendan Fraser) decides to fight for a cure, partnering with an eccentric scientist (Harrison Ford) to beat the clock and save his kids’ lives. The filmmakers strangely focus on funding and paperwork instead of the human drama with a lot of time spent watching Ford and Fraser bicker and make investor presentations. The debut feature of CBS Films, who, next time, might want to deliver a film that veers a little farther from the kind of fare people can watch at home for free. RATED: PG for thematic material, language and a mild suggestive moment. RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Tooth Fairy”
Following the big-screen exploits of elves and bedroom monsters, tooth fairies were inevitably ready for their close-up. “Tooth Fairy” steals liberally from “Monsters Inc.” and “Elf,” among many others. It’s very much what you’d expect: a tale of optimism overcoming disbelief; family fare with comical casting (Julie Andrews as a Fairy Godmother); The Rock in a tutu. But despite its predictability and pat Hollywood cliche, “Tooth Fairy” is mostly charming, thanks largely to the toothy grins of Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) and Stephen Merchant, the British comedian and Ricky Gervais sidekick. Johnson plays a minor league hockey player who’s summoned to Tooth Fairy duty (Merchant plays his guide) to penalize his dream-dashing ways. Obvious puns (some from Billy Crystal in a cameo as a veteran fairy) and fully expected redemption follow. Johnson, a human Buzz Lightyear, and the spindly Merchant make the obvious material surprisingly winning. RATED: PG for mild language, some rude humor and sports action. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

For Ford, it’s all about the story By SANDY COHEN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harrison Ford speaks in a measured tone and fiddles with a pen cap as he explains that, for him, making movies isn’t about performances. His characters might be brave like Han Solo, brilliant like Jack Ryan or brash like Indiana Jones — so long as they serve the story. In “Extraordinary Measures,” opening Friday, Ford plays the cantankerous Dr. Robert Stonehill, a scientist whose disagreeable nature almost overshadows the promise of his medical research. Desperate dad John Crowley must see past the doctor ’s prickly personality: Crowley thinks Stonehill’s research could hold the key to a cure for the rare and fatal disease afflicting two of his kids. The two men join in the hope of making a medicine out of Stonehill’s science. The film is inspired by the true story of the Crowley family, a story Ford read four years ago and found ideal for feature-film treatment. But Stonehill is fiction, an amalgam of different men Crowley worked with in real life, Ford says. Ford, an executive producer on the film, didn’t just help bring the Crowleys’ experience to the screen, he helped create his own character — one that would be interesting for the actor and add drama to the story. “If there’s an easy fit to the pieces, there’s no drama,” Ford says. “So we determined among ourselves to make (Stonehill) a difficult guy, lacking in social skills, not necessarily the best partner ... and we thought that would give us the opportunity to develop their

The 67-year-old actor simply would do anything to tell a good tale. “I make a character out of those things that allow him to tell the story,” he says. “I’m not an actor who will say, ’Well, my character would never do that.’ If the story
requires it, then I’ll find a way of accommodating that in character. “For me, it’s not about performance. It’s about storytelling,” he continues. “Once I get a clear idea of what I want to accomplish, then acting is just dressing up and playing.” Ford was nominated for an O s c a r f o r “ Wi t n e s s ” i n 1 9 8 6 and was named Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Man of the Year a decade later. He won lifetime achievement honors from the
American Film Institute in 2000 and the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 2002. Yet for some moviegoers, Ford will always be Han Solo or Indiana Jones. That’s some pretty successful playing. And it was enough t o i n t i m i d a t e “ E x t r a o rd i n a r y Measures” director Tom Vaughan, who credits Ford as “the star of various movies that set me on the course of becoming a filmmaker.” But Vaughn says Ford diffused
his fears. “He was very much about presenting himself to me as an actor. He said, ’I’m here to help you tell the story,”’ the director recalls. “I was able to put aside my fanboy feelings of working with Harrison Ford and said OK, I’m a director, he’s an actor and we’re going to tell this story.” Ford says he doesn’t reflect on his past roles, nor does he seek his next job in terms of parts he might want to play.
“Extraordinary Measures” feels like TV By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The very first feature effort from CBS Film Productions is exactly the kind of p ro g r a m m i n g o n e w o u l d e x p e c t f ro m a t e l e v i s i o n n e t w o r k g e a re d ( a t l e a s t in the recent past) to older audiences who crave the sort of content that once made Saturday night TV a thing of l e g e n d . “ E x t r a o rd i n a r y M e a s u re s ” i s tame, cute, bland, chock-full of serious a c t o r s w h o s o m e t i m e s o v e r- p e r f o r m , and, yet, at times the very serious nature of the content brings you back to how legitimately heart-tugging it is. If the trivia note I read this morning is true, and it appears to be, then this is Harrison Ford’s first movie since “Return of the Jedi” when he hasn’t gotten top billing. Instead, that honor falls to Brendan Fraser in this movie as John Crowley, a troubled father of three young kids, two of who suffer from Pompe Disease. Pompe is a form of genetic muscular disorder that prevents the absorption of

some enzymes into the muscles and cause organ swelling, organ failure, respiratory distress, and growth concerns. According t o t h e m o v i e , m o s t c h i l d re n a ff l i c t e d with this condition die before their ninth birthday (though actual survival rates in infants are closer to 2 years of age). John’s two youngest children, Megan (Meredith Droeger), and Patrick ( D i e g o Ve l a s q u e z ) , a re t e r m i n a l , b u t not hopeless. Their father ’s successful business career has provided them every comfort they need for survival, including ‘round-the-clock nursing care, hospitalworthy home care equipment, and respirator-equipped wheelchairs. Through the auspices of their doting mother, Aileen (Keri Russell), they’ve not missed out on any of the warm, memoryforming milestones of childhood. They picnic in the park. They make trips to the zoo. Their toys get thorough workouts. Megan and Patrick simply can’t sleep without being hooked up to monitors or walk under the failing power of their own bodies. It’s emotionally overwhelming, at times, and the CBS-
effect misted my eyes on occasion. John spends his late night hours researching Pompe Disease and the latest case studies on treatment theories. This obsession leads him from Chicago to the University of Nebraska where Dr. Robert Stonehill (Ford) has the best hope of a breakthrough. Stonehill’s gruff, unpolished exterior gives him the exact image that Ford is most capable of backing up with his own gruff, unpolished acting style. It also makes him an expensive, but ideal candidate for Movie of the Week roles. Dr. Stonehill’s enzyme theories need the financial backing that John is able to provide in order to develop a drug for potential testing trials. Together the two men form a business that eventually catches the eye of a major pharmaceutical firm in Seattle. The second hour of the film is a formulaic tug-of-war between business and genius that goes nowhere until a predictable, semi-satisfying ending. “Extraordinary Measures” runs 107 minutes and is rated PG for thematic
material, language, and a mild suggestive moment. I give this film two stars out of four. Another of the movies in general re l e a s e a t t h e m o m e n t i s t h e D e n z e l Washington vehicle, “The Book of Eli.” Having just had the opportunity to see it, I have to ask why do all post-apocalyptic movies have to look so similar? The formula follows a pattern like: l o s s o f s o c i e t y, g e n e r a l m i s t r u s t , t h e strong preying on the weak, and lots of cloudy/dusty/smoky landscape shots before a dark hero steps aside to form a hopeful outlook for tomorrow. If this is your cup of tea, then have at it. Denzel looks good without the gray hair and directors Allen and Albert Hughes do well with the close-up scenes (many of which feature a wicked machete), but there is nothing new here that wasn’t done better in “The Road Warrior.” “The Book of Eli” runs 124 minutes and is rated R for some brutal violence and language. I give this film one star out of four.

Hot Art
Main Street Art Gallery presents new exhibit
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Main Street Art Gallery, located in beautiful, historic downtown Edwardsville, has a new exhibit that is sure to drive away the winter blues. “Baby It’s Cold Outside: But the Art is HOT” is currently on display and has a lot of “hot” colors, “hot”
sensuous works, and anything else “hot” themed that the artists wanted to mix into their work. Following are the artists featured in this sizzling exhibit and a description of their craft and their pieces. 1. Faye Malench specializes in fused and kiln-formed glass. You must see her woven glass wall pieces. “Glass working is a
materials-driven art form, and the characteristics of the glass must be respected to derive the best outcomes.” Fay begins with cold flat sheets of glass; cutting it into long strips for weaving, or pattern shapes for more intricate designs. Yo u c a n r e a c h F a y a t : malenchglass@aol.com 2. Patti Badman has created three oil paintings that are very “hot,” sensuously depicting an angel saving a woman, entitled “Saved.” Another work – a man and woman are experiencing a loving moment in “After” and a small work with a woman writing a letter titled; “Response”. Patti uses black outlining much like the German expressionists and large angular features. She blends her aesthetics with color and balance to portray feelings, hopes or dreams in her work. Patti can be reached at pbadman@ roxanaschools.org 3. Carmelita Nunez is a ceramic artist who creates beautiful f u n c t io n a l p i e c e s o f p e o p l e ’ s everyday rituals. Carmelita considers creating work for even the basic everyday moments and tasks that we perform. She has a big, functional bowl with a flying bluebird. She has also created very
round mugs that you cup your hand around and help you savor what you are drinking as well as what you are holding. She can be reached at: gleamingbabies@yahoo. com 4.) Genece Hamby is a digital painter. She combines bright colors, line and balance to create a harmony in her work. “ Digital painting from scratch has the same excitement and creative magic as painting onto a canvas with oils or acrylics. It requires the same connection that is between the intuitive self and hand/eye coordination.” G e n e c e c a n b e re a c h e d a t : genece@shibuistudio.com 5. Joanie Santoro is a painter that works in a variety of mediums. The collages are a combination of ephemera, paint and found objects. Her works often tell a story. Joanie specializes in faux finishes. She can make something old look new and something new look old. She has painted the seats of two stools to resemble a printed linen fabric. Joanie can be reached at: jsantoro@charter.net 6. Sumi Shah was raised in British ruled India. There she was educated in traditional arts. Her ceramic work reflects her native land and love of color. She creates functional
ceramic pieces that have an intricate pattern or carved design. Sumi can be reached at: sshah@ gmail.com 7. Labecca Petterson has created these paintings with a dialog between traditional oil painting, color management and digital photography – merging one medium into the existence of the other. “The imagery speaks to the rapidly changing technologies of today while holding onto the familiarities of yesterday. The subject matter – chairs, are a metaphor for the human condition. They cradle us from very young to old. In their design they denote their function. What was once unusual becomes commonplace and then long forgotten, to be replaced by the newest and latest of human novelties.” Labecca can be reached at: lebeccapeterson@charter.net. M a i n S t re e t A r t G a l l e r y i s located at 237/239 Main Street in Edwardsville. The phone number is 655-9999. The gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Sunday and Monday. See more gallery images or learn more about the gallery by visiting www.beadit-art.com.

From Russia with love UMSL project displays immigrants’ photographs By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge St. Louis is a melting pot within its city limits. There are a number of neighborhoods that people from various countries or ethnicities migrate to. Whether it be The Hill, the Italian heritage neighborhood just west of the Tower Grove area; Soulard, known for large numbers of immigrants from Germany and Bohemia;, or Old North St. Louis, which was settled by waves of immigrants, first German, then Irish and later Italian, Polish and Jewish, St. Louis has a diverse history of being home to many multi-cultural backgrounds. There is a large population of Russian immigrants that reside in the St. Louis area. The University of Missouri-St. Louis has offered an ongoing Public Policy Research Center Photography Project, where participants are taught photography. A number of Russian immigrants from the St. Louis area participated
February 4, 2010
in the project. Through the project, photos taken by Russian natives will be on display in an exhibit called “Russian St. Louis.” The participants were asked to document their culture, and the results will accompany the photographs in the exhibit. The project results will be on display in two locations. Ron Laboray, a PPRC Photography Project instructor, worked with a group of Russian immigrants for the exhibit. He described them as “lively, determined and internationally astute” and said they expressed “a strong desire to create stronger bonds between Russians living in St. Louis.” This sentiment was echoed by project participant Dmitri Kabargin, who is president of the Greater St. Louis-Samara Sister City Committee. “It is amazing how people who emigrate from a country as huge as Russia do not get connected with each other and do not build a strong community in a small city like St. Louis,” said Kabargin, one of just under 17,000 Russian immigrants in the St. Louis area. “There are a lot of small groups, small Russian communities, within St. Louis, but there is no one place where you can learn about all of them. Projects like this let people know about each other and help build a stronger community.” The group met for 10 weeks to study digital photography and discuss how their photographs reflect what it is like to be Russian in St. Louis. Laboray said the participants felt it was important to convey Russian tradition without relying on the standard pop culture clichés. Instead, the resulting photos captured a range of subjects: a long workday, a game of billiards, a special dinner, family, church, motherhood and Russian World War II veterans. “Russian St. Louis” will be on display Jan. 26 through March 14 at the PPRC Photography Project Gallery in 427 Social Sciences and Business Building at UMSL, One University Blvd. in Bellerive, Mo. Gallery hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. A duplicate of each PPRC Photography Project exhibit also is displayed in a location affiliated with the photographers. In addition to UMSL, “Russian St. Louis” will be on display Jan. 26 through March 14 at Astoria Restaurant, 12949 Olive
Blvd., in unincorporated west St. Louis County (63141). Exhibit hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday and 5 to 11 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays. An opening reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 26 at the restaurant. The PPRC Photography Project was modeled after the pioneering community photography programs established by artist and teacher Wendy Ewald. Several volunteer St. Louis-area community groups participate in the PPRC Photography Project each year. They learn the basics of photography and then are asked to document efforts to improve their neighborhood’s quality of life. The Public Policy Research Center ’s goal for the project is twofold: to highlight the undertakings of local organizations working toward the greater good and to inspire people to take a closer look at and get involved with their communities. The Photography Project was co-sponsored by the Public Policy Research Center at UMSL, Missouri Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts and Regional Arts Commission. Allison Smith: Needle Work at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum Allison Smith creates large-scale multimedia installations that critically engage popular forms of historical reenactment — including sculpture, fabrics, ceramics and other traditional crafts — to redo, restage and refigure our sense of collective memory. Frequently drawing on “living history” museums, battlegrounds and, most recently, the Internet, Smith explores notions of gender, culture and authenticity through craft and performance and the connections of both to war, violence and the construction of national identity. In February the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will showcase the artist’s most recent project, Allison Smith: Needle Work. The installation centers on the recreation of European and American gas masks from World War I and World War II. Appearing crudely fashioned — from textiles such as canvas and twill tape as opposed to the more familiar industrial black rubber — these early masks, which Smith first encountered while visiting the Musée de l’Armée in Paris, struck her as meticulously, even lovingly, crafted, yet also functionally inadequate to their task. Allison Smith: Needle Work will open Feb. 5, and will remain on view through April 19. In preparing her replicas, Smith studied the history and evolution of gas masks, often sketching from primary sources or using a cell phone to take photographs. She also scoured the Web for archival images, many of which (like the cell phone photos) proved blurry, pixelated or otherwise difficult to decipher, leaving the artist to guess at fabrics and construction details. But this sense of approximation is central to Smith’s project, underscoring the unreliability of historical memory as well as the ultimate impossibility of “authentic” reproduction. Indeed, the gap between artifact and reproduction reinforces Smith’s conception of the mask as both uniform and costume, at once signifying the invisibility of the individual and the freedom to not “be oneself” at moments of one’s choosing.

from Japan and the Allied Forces signed surrender documents ending World War II is reopening after three months of maintenance and repairs. The former USS Missouri, now called the Battleship Missouri Memorial, came out of drydock Jan. 7 and will start welcoming visitors again on Jan. 15. The ship is located in Pearl Harbor, moored a few hundred yards from the USS Arizona, a battleship that sank when Japan attacked Dec. 7, 1941, forcing the U.S. into the war. The surrender documents were signed on the Missouri’s deck on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay. The Missouri also served in the Korean and Persian Gulf wars before being decommissioned in 1992. The memorial opened in January 1999. Details on planning a visit at http://www.ussmissouri.com/.

JFK airport runway in NYC to be shut down for four months NEW YORK (AP) — The largest r u n w a y a t J o h n F. K e n n e d y International Airport will be shut down in March for renovations. Airport officials say the runway will be closed for four months. The runway handles one-third of JFK’s total air traffic, including more than half of its departures. During repairs, there will be fewer flights on carriers like Delta and JetBlue, according to The New York Times. The shutdown could increase delays, but airport and airline officials insist there won’t be any major problems. They say that in the
long run, the renovations will help reduce delays. The repairs will include widening the runway, replacing its asphalt surface with concrete, and updating lighting and electrical systems.
Amtrak’s Acela going Wi-Fi, D.C. to Boston WASHINGTON (AP) — Amtrak’s Acela Express trains, which run from Washington to Boston, will soon be getting wireless Internet access. Amtrak said that its installation of wireless Internet access on the high-speed trains would be complete in March and initially free to passengers. Amtrak made the announcement as part of a 2010 preview of its activities.
This year is the 10th anniversary of the Acela Express train service, which began operating in 2000. The trains make the trip from Washington to Boston in about six and a half hours, about an hour and a half faster than regional trains. Also in 2010 Amtrak will complete upgrades on the interiors of the Acela trains, including leather seats and improved tray tables and power outlets. Last year Acela had some 3 million riders.

Eco-adventure will fly in Branson By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Are you an adventurous spirit? Like to try your hand at deathdefying feats? Maybe you just love nature and would like to see it from above the tree tops. Now you will be able to do something in Branson besides see country shows, shop and eat. You can take an extreme sports adventure. Branson Zipline and Canopy Tour, now under construction in Branson, plans to be open this spring. Construction of the platforms for the new Eco-Adventure is ahead of schedule. Branson’s newest attraction, conveniently located on Highway 65 only seven miles north of downtown Branson, will introduce visitors to a unique form of outdoor entertainment. “This is a completely different experience,” points out General Manager Emma Hamilton, “and there is no other attraction that comes close to combining ecology and adventure in a fun activity that is both exciting and safe for people of all ages.” The Branson Zipline and Canopy Tour will allow guests to soar among the mountain tops, high in the Ozark Mountains. As visitors “zip” from observation platform to platform, through and over the trees, certified guides will accompany participants pointing out unique topographical and historical features of the Ozarks. Certification for the guides will be provided by the Association
February 4, 2010
for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), as will be the accreditation for the courses themselves. Ziplines began as a method of transportation in the Costa Rican jungle. They evolved from a system for moving supplies to a form of “green” recreation. Canopy tours developed as a way to experience the tree canopy in a non-evasive, guilt-free way. Imagine flying through the tree canopy at varying heights, experiencing the same thrill that early explorers felt. You will be attached to the zipline cable by a secure harness and trolley system and find yourself gliding through the trees between secure observation platforms where your guide will help you make a smooth landing. You will also experience canopy walkways that are basically suspension bridges that lead between the trees. The certified guides will help ensure that you have the absolute best possible experience. They will point out the most interesting ecological, topographical, and historical features of the Ozark Mountains. Today, ziplining is one of the most popular activities for visitors to Costa Rica, and several other exotic locations throughout the world. Many of these tours are sold out months in advance. Why? Once you’ve experienced a zipline, you will be hooked for life. You can spend thousands of dollars traveling to a distant locale for this amazing experience OR you
can have the thrill of a lifetime for just a fraction of the price right in Branson. Just remember that there is a limited capacity and there are expectations to be sold out far in advance. At opening visitors will be able to experience the Ozarks Xplorer Canopy Tour. A two and a half hour, interactive tour which will feature a variety of zip lines, walkways and platforms; and the Blue Streak Fastline, a thrilling one-stop ride from the top of the property to the base. Hamilton adds, “Visitors will be able to experience the Ozark Outdoors through all the seasons, as we run year round, only pausing for lightning.” The Branson Zipline and Canopy Tour is the only facility of its kind in the region. “We can take up to 12 people at a time on each tour, so there is a very limited capacity.” states Emma, “In many areas, zip line canopy tours are sold out weeks and months in advance, so we strongly advise making reservations now.” Tours begin May 1, 2010, and can be booked now by visiting www. BransonZipline.com or by calling 417-616-5156. The course has been designed to be a low impact activity that is appropriate for all ages.

One girl's battle against obesity CHICAGO (AP) — Paris Woods is hardly a poster child for the obesity epidemic. Lining up dripping wet with kids on her swim team, she’s a blend of girlish chunkiness and womanly curves. I n s t re e t c l o t h e s — ro o m y pink sweats or skimpy tank tops revealing broad, brown swimmers’ shoulders — the teen blends in with her friends, a fresh-faced, robustlooking All-American girl. That’s the problem. Like nearly one-third of American teens, Paris Woods is overweight. Her doctor worries her weight will creep up into the obesity range. One out of four black girls her age is obese. The more than 11 million U.S. teens who are overweight or obese face an increased risk for diseases once confined to adults, like diabetes, artery damage and liver trouble. Those problems along with high blood pressure and high cholesterol are showing up increasingly in kids. Paris’ pediatrician urged her to take part in an intensive experiment. The goal? To see if a yearlong program of weekly sessions with a nutritionist, exercise trainer and doctor, all preaching major lifestyle changes, could keep the 14-year-old from becoming obese. It’s the kind of intensive help that the influential U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said last month can work for teens. Through successes, setbacks and even a bout with swine flu, Paris tried sticking with it. Skipped sessions stretched the program from 12 months into 20, but she didn’t quit. Did it work? Stay tuned — her experience is a reflection of many families’ struggles with obesity. During Paris’ endeavor: • Burger King introduced a 1,360calorie triple Whopper sandwich; McDonald’s profit climbed to $4.55 billion; and KFC introduced its Kentucky Grilled Chicken “for health-conscious customers.” • Torrid, a nationwide chain of clothes for plus-size teen girls, opened its 156th store, up from six in 2001. • First Lady Michelle Obama — who grew up a few miles from Paris Woods’ Chicago home — made fighting childhood obesity her pet project. “We have a chance to change the fate of the next generation if we
get on it,” she said recently. The options in Paris’ middleclass mostly black South Side neighborhood are limited to a bounty of fast food. Paris has a taste for fried chicken, bacon cheeseburgers and Snickers bars, and sometimes little willpower. Swimming helps her fight that. The sport has been a passion since she was a little girl. Her parents, Dinah and Parris Woods, wanted their three daughters to be active, to keep them busy and out of trouble. “You can’t just do nothing,” says Dinah, 47, a former fitness instructor. In Paris’ tween years, her weight started to creep up. She developed early and classmates made fun of her blossoming bust and swimmers’ shoulders. “They started calling me fat,” Paris says softly. It made her very self-conscious. So she wears two suits to swim. They are a drag on her swimming times, but help camouflage her curves. Pulling on a blue swim cap and stretching goggles tight over her dark eyes, Paris shallow-dives into the pool where her club team practices. With smooth, strong strokes, she glides effortlessly through the water, where no one comments on her size or tells her to watch what she eats. In the water, she says, “I stay calm. It takes all the stress away.” Paris’ two college-age sisters ballooned into obesity in their teens. The family’s pediatrician, Dr. Cathy Joyce, says that often happens — teens put on weight, go off to college, and come back obese. S o s h e a s ked Paris to join an obesity prevention study at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center. Because shedding weight is tough if the people in charge of filling the fridge aren’t on board, parents must enroll, too. Paris’ parents are also overweight and with borderline high blood pressure. They readily signed up. That’s unusual. Joyce has had a hard time recruiting. Her goal is 50 patients; she has only 31. Some parents aren’t willing to change the family’s lifestyle, others don’t think their overweight kids are fat. Joyce says parents often don’t notice until teens are very obese — weighing 50 pounds or so too much.

“Reality shows like ’The Biggest Loser ’ definitely have not helped,” she said. They’ve skewed the public’s perception of what overweight looks like, featuring people who are dangerously obese. The show’s 2010 cast — including a 526-pound Chicago-area DJ — is its heaviest ever. At 5 feet 4 inches and 158 pounds, Paris started the program about 20 pounds overweight. That was April 2008, just before her 15th birthday. One of Paris’ sisters had become a vegetarian, so the family decided to do the same. The hospital program doesn’t require a specific diet, but recommends healthy grains, lots of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding unhealthy fats. Patients also are taught to read food labels and to eat three meals a day. The idea is to choose a lifelong healthy way of eating. It was all new to the Woodses, a tight-knit, busy family who used to skip breakfast and snack on the run. Paris’ mom likes to cook and the new regime lets her experiment with tofu, nuts and soy cheese. It also means shunning old family favorites, including ham and macaroni and cheese. Their diet sometimes requires a trip to Whole Foods eight miles from home, and it’s costlier, but Dinah Woods says she’d prefer paying now, rather than later with her health. The change was drastic, but also seemed exciting. Paris loved the avocado sandwiches and veggie burgers her mom packed for lunch, even if some friends turned up their noses. At their weekly group sessions at Dr. Joyce’s office, the Woods family weighs in and gets eating tips and encouragement from a nutritionist. In the waiting room, there are halfhour workout sessions. Trainer Scott Mathews leads kids and parents
through lunges, sit-ups, leg lifts and other exercises they’re urged to do at home. The Woodses usually come on Wednesday evenings. It’s not a perfect time — everyone’s bushed after school and work. Dinah is a sales counselor and Parris, 46, a technician for hospital TV systems, attends night school. But they all gamely roll out exercise mats and dive in. A fall 2008 session has Paris on her back, pedaling her legs and breathing hard. She rolls her eyes when Mathews asks if she’s getting tired. “I know you’re tired. You just have to push when you’re tired,” he says. Besides swimming most days, Paris likes to run with her two dogs, and tries to walk, instead of ride, when she can. Her parents walk a few miles several mornings before work. It’s pretty easy to stick to the regimen during that first summer and fall. By October, Paris’ weight is down 8 pounds, to 150 and she’s lost 3 inches from her waist. Her parents also have shed pounds, and all three say they have more energy. Paris has lost her taste for meat. “I’m just like, ew, it’s so nasty,” she says Thanksgiving is the first big test. No turkey, ham, biscuits, cheesecake or chocolate cake like Dinah used to make. Instead, Paris says, it’s “tofu everything,” plus lots of vegetables and wheat rolls. Could Dinah’s lemon cake made with egg substitute possibly taste as good as her traditional desserts? “No, not really,” Paris says laughing, “but I had to eat something.” The Woodses are nervous before the next weigh-in, but the scale shows good news: No one gained weight. By mid-December, Paris felt really proud. She bought new
pants and belts. And looking in the mirror, she says, “I don’t see a face around fat. I just see, like, my bone structure ... my features in my face” are more visible. It’s a face full of youthful softness and a grown-up beauty in her sparkling eyes and arched eyebrows. Paris is starting to tell herself she looks pretty. Still hovering around 150 pounds, she hopes to weigh 140 by her 16th birthday, April 13. “If I reach that, I’ll be pretty happy,” she says. Her birthday would mark the end of the yearlong effort. Chicago’s 2008-09 winter is harsh, snowy and cold. Paris feels little motivation to venture outside to exercise. It’s dark when she gets home from school and homework keeps her busy until bedtime. Her friends alternate between encouragement and saying she’s wasting her time. Her dad says Paris “is fine as long as she’s at home. She pretty much sticks to the diet. When she’s with friends, they go out to burger places. She struggles with that a bit.” At school lunch, friends reach over and grab bites of her veggie sandwiches, and Paris thinks it’s unfair that their food is off-limits. Sometimes she takes a few bites, anyway. By April 2009, it’s clear Paris will miss her birthday goal. In fact, she’s put on about 5 pounds. Wearing a tight magenta tank top accentuating her tummy bulge, she says, “I just want my stomach a little flatter.” But she acknowledges “getting a little tired” of the food. Since they began a year ago, the family has missed several sessions because of busy schedules, but they’ve vowed to complete the program and are allowed to continue for several more months.

Fazoli’s A new taste comes to Edwardsville By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge There is a new show in town and they are bringing Italian cuisine with it. It is Fazoli’s, where the motto is: “Fast. Fresh. Italian” Becoming the eighth location in the St. Louis metro area, the Edwardsville location opened to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The restaurant is the first companyowned store to open in four years. President and CEO Carl T. Howard, who was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Jan. 25, wanted the community to know that Fazoli’s was glad to now be a part of Edwardsville. “We saw a great opportunity to open a store in Edwardsville, knew we would be well received in this community and here we are,” said Howard. The store has a different feel from the “typical” freestanding Fazoli’s that patrons may be used to seeing. Making their home in the former Noble Roman’s Pizza Restaurant, there was an opportunity to do something different. “This is a new concept that gives a fresh, new look to Fazoli’s and we are proud to unveil it here in Edwardsville,” said Stacy Hettich, Brand Director for Fazoli’s. “This is different and unique compared to the other Fazoli’s in the area, but we still have the same great food.” There will be a couple of new items on the menu, but for the most part, they are sticking with what they know is good. Their ovenbaked pastas are a favorite with most diners, including baked spaghetti
– with or without meatballs, twice baked lasagna, or maybe Chicken Parmigano. Their fresh made pastas are always tempting and includes new item – Chicken Carbonara, new item – Tortellini and Sun-Dried Tomato Rustico, spaghetti or penne, with choice of marinara or meat sauce or meatballs, fettuccine alfredo, or ravioli. Maybe you can’t decide. Don’t fear, there is an “ultimate sampler” that includes meat lasagna, spaghetti with meat sauce, fettuccine alfredo and penne with meat sauce. Or try the “classic sampler” with meat lasagna, spaghetti with meat sauce and fettuccini alfredo. We are all in a hurry after work and after school to get everyone to their evening activities and homework taken care of, so why not consider letting Fazoli’s feed your family. There are family meals that serve four, with a number of choices of the different types of pastas, salads and breadsticks. If you are looking to the lighter side, there is a complete menu of fresh salads. Grilled chicken artichoke – a new item, with artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and lemon-basil vinaigrette. Crispy chicken BLT – a new item, with grape tomatoes, bacon and creamy parmesan peppercorn ranch. Cranberry and walnut chicken – a new item, with cranberries, glazed walnuts, parmesan cheese and red wine vinaigrette. Chicken and pasta Ceasar with tri-color rotini, salami, black olives, parmesan cheese and
Caesar dressing. Or maybe add a side Italian or garden salad to your meal. Of course you get their hot signature breadsticks, free with your entree. You can choose to buy them ala carte if you are just in the mood to enjoy their delicious bread. Top off your meal with some fantastic dessert choices, like the new New York style cheesecake with strawberry topping, the new turtle cheesecake, the new chocolate chip cannolis, new chocolate layer cake, or new Choco-Lato mousse. You can still enjoy some of their classic favorites, Italian lemon ice with strawberry or regular lemon ice or a chocolate chunk cookie. The new design, all be it sleek and fresh, did not allow for a drive-thru. Never fear, however, as they are going to offer curbside pick up. You can call ahead and they will deliver it to your car or you will soon be able to go to www.fazolis.com and order online and pick it up curbside. Fazoli’s is also your place for catering, offering a huge selection of their pastas, subs, pizzas and more for your next party or event. Stop by and pick up a complete list of catered items with the prices so you will have it handy for future planning. The new restaurant is located at 6663 Edwardsville Crossing Drive in Edwardsville Crossing center, in the out-building in front of Dierbergs. Dining Delights Apple streusel pie isn't limited to the holidays By Flo Braker San Francisco Chronicle Although the holidays are just a memory, that doesn’t mean that baking has to take a vacation until next year. Apple season is still at its height, and apple pie never goes out of style. It’s perfect to brighten up a dull winter day. Almost every aspect of apple pie can be changed to suit your preference, and over time I have experimented with innumerable adaptations. I vary the apples, enclose the filling in a single or double crust, change the shape of the pan and add different complementary ingredients. This version uses equal parts of Golden Delicious and Pink Lady apples, which keep their shape while baking. I also like to add Pippin apples when I can find them, using one-third of each variety. I’ve added chunks of rich dates (the Deglet Noor variety found in bulk bins at wellstocked markets), a dash of maple syrup, apple cider vinegar and orange zest to lend a fresh, bright note. I’ve also learned that it’s a good thing to leave some ingredients the same. I use a gentle hand when adding spices in order to let the fruitiness of the apples stand out. I also don’t thicken the filling excessively with flour or cornstarch. This leaves some free-flowing juices, which act as a bonus sauce when you slice the pie. I use a see-through ovenproof glass pan so I can see when the bottom of the crust is finished baking. I like to make an apple pie over two days. On day one, I prepare the crust and the streusel topping. If I’m really organized, I’ll mix the sugars, flour and spices for the filling. On day two, I peel and slice the apples. If time is really short, I do this the day before, tossing them with a little lemon juice and covering them with plastic wrap. Even if they discolor slightly, it’s not noticeable in the finished pie. I bake the pie on the day I serve it, so it will be warm or room temperature. For an extra flourish, buy a high-quality vanilla ice cream and transfer it to the refrigerator about 30 minutes before serving. Then spoon the softened ice cream onto or around each slice of pie as a hassle-free creme anglaise. Apple pie is a springboard recipe that lets you create exactly what you want. Apple Streusel Pie Serves 8-10 You can make the streusel and dough a day or two ahead; wrap well and refrigerate. Serve with softened vanilla ice cream, if desired. Streusel 1/4 cup packed golden brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, stirred with a fork before measuring 4 tablespoons unsalted butter,

room temperature 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts Pie Dough 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, stirred with a fork before measuring 2 teaspoons granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 tablespoons cold vegetable shortening, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice mixed with 3 tablespoons ice water Filling 1/4 cup packed golden brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons flour 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 2 1/2 pounds (about 6) firm, tart apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/8-inch slices (about 8 cups) 13 pitted dates (about 3 1/2 ounces), cut in half, with each half cut crosswise into thirds (about 3/4 cup) 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup 2 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, optional For the streusel: Combine all the
ingredients in a large bowl, using your fingertips to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Cover and refrigerate or freeze until ready to use. For the dough: Place the flour, sugar and salt in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade; pulse once or twice to blend. Scatter the butter and shortening pieces over the dry ingredients and process in brief pulses just until the mixture forms pea-size crumbs that are evenly distributed throughout, about 20 seconds. Gradually add the water/vinegar, pulsing on and off, until large, rough and shaggy, moist crumbs form, 8 to 9 seconds. Pinch a small portion of the dough between your fingers. If it won’t hold together, add a little more water, 1 teaspoon at a time. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface, gently shape it into a ball, and flatten into a 5inch disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough to roll, at least 2 hours or overnight. Have on hand a glass pie dish. Place the disk of dough on a lightly floured work surface, and roll it out into a 13-inch circle about 3/16-inch thick. Carefully transfer the pastry to the pie dish and gently press the dough against the sides and bottom. Trim the edges with kitchen scissors to leave a 3/4-inch overhang. Roll
the overhang under itself and bring it up onto the dish rim so it is flush with the lip of the dish. Pinch and flute the folded overhang decoratively around the rim to create a thick, high edge. Cover and refrigerate the pastrylined pie dish until it is very firm, at least 1 hour, or overnight. For the filling: Place the rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 425. Mix the sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl. Place apple slices in a large bowl, scatter the date pieces over the apples, sprinkle with the sugar mixture and toss gently and briefly with a rubber spatula. Mix the maple syrup, cider vinegar, melted butter and orange zest (if
using) in a small measuring glass. Sprinkle over the apple mixture, tossing again just to combine. Spoon the filling into the chilled pastry-lined pan, spreading the fruit slices evenly (cover the date pieces with the apple slices so the date pieces won’t burn during baking). Mound the slices higher in the center. Apply all of the streusel to the pie, patting the streusel to form a thin topping on the fruit. Bake the pie for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 375 and bake for 30 to 40 minutes longer, or until the bottom crust is golden brown .Transfer to a cooling rack. Serve lukewarm or at room temperature with the softened vanilla ice cream as an accompaniment.
