People planner Apollo 11 exhibit coming to St. Louis
The Saint Louis Science Center is proud to announce that it is one of four science museums nationwide to host “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will feature the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, marking the first time in 46 years the module has left the museum, as well as 20 artifacts from the historic mission. After the exhibition tour, the artifacts will return to the Smithsonian for a new exhibition, also titled “Destination Moon,” which will open in 2020. “Destination Moon” will be at the Saint Louis Science Center from April 14 to Sept. 3, 2018. The 49th anniversary of the moon landing is July 20, 2018. “St. Louis played a vital role in the Space Race, with McDonnellDouglas serving as a key leader in the
development of the Mercury and Apollo mission technology,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO. “We are honored to have the opportunity to host this exhibition, which represents an iconic period in our country’s history. We are the only museum in the Midwest to host this exhibition, which is so special for the city of St. Louis. We feel very honored because we know that for many people this will be a once- in-a-lifetime chance to see these artifacts.” In addition to the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the only portion of the historic spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth, the exhibition will feature: • Star Chart: The chart shows the positions of the sun, moon and stars at the time Apollo 11 was scheduled to leave Earth’s orbit and head for the moon. • Rucksack #1, Survival Kit: One of two rucksacks filled with equipment to help the crew survive for up to 48 hours in the event of an emergency landing somewhere on Earth. The kit includes
three water containers, a radio beacon and spare battery, three pairs of sunglasses, six packages of desalting chemicals, a seawater desalter kit, two survival lights, a machete and two bottles of sunscreen. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Visor: Buzz Aldrin wore this outer helmet while on the surface of the moon. It fit over his clear pressure-bubble helmet. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Gloves: These gloves have an outer, cut-resistant shell of Chromel-R fabric across the hands to prevent fatal air leaks caused
by handling sharp objects and gauntlets to protect against solar heating. The blue fingertips were made of silicone rubber to provide more sensitivity for touching. Vescolani said, “‘Destination Moon’ will help visitors of all ages to appreciate the accomplishment of the Moon Landing and all of the work that went into making it happen. We hope the exhibition inspires our guests to think about what is next in space discovery. Perhaps one of them will play a role in exploring Mars and beyond.”

First on “Politically Incorrect” (Comedy Central, ABC, 1993-2002), and for the last fourteen years on HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him 38 Emmy nominations. Maher won his first Emmy in 2014 as executive producer for the HBO series, “VICE.” In October of 2008, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion, “Religulous,” directed by Larry Charles (“Borat”).

Tuning in The Sheldon to present The 442s
The Sheldon presents T h e 4 4 2 s , S a t u r d a y, March 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. The 442s are multiinstrumentalist Adam Maness, violinist Shawn Weil, cellist Bjorn Ranheim and bassist Sydney Rodway. Combining two members of the world-class St. Louis Symphony and two of the St. Louis city’s finest jazz musicians, The 442s are a genre-defying acoustic quartet named for the modern standard tuning of 442 Hz. Brought together by the innovative and inspired compositions of Adam Maness, who plays piano, guitar, accordion, melodica and glockenspiel in the group, The 442s features Shawn Weil on violin, Bjorn Ranheim on cello and Sydney Rodway on bass. The Arts Shakespeare Festival adds outreach program For The Edge S h a k e s p e a re F e s t i v a l S t . Louis will be adding a fourth pillar – In the Works – to its In the Schools, In the Streets, In the Park programming, enhancing its appeal as a year-round festival, it was announced today. In the Works, a month-long ticketed event, scheduled for late fall at the Grandel Theatre, will culminate the 2018 season that includes the Education Tour (Feb. 5-April 15), SHAKE 38 (April 18-22), the main stage production of “Romeo & Juliet” (June 1-24) and Shakespeare in the Streets’ production of “Blow, Winds,” (June 15-16). The Festival also announced that casting for “Romeo & Juliet” is complete – Sigrid Wise and Reynaldo Piniella will play the star-crossed lovers in “Romeo & Juliet.” Wise, a graduate of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, was recently seen on Festival stages in “The Winter’s Tale” and, in the “The Tempest” in partnership with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Piniella is a New York-based actor with theater, film and TV credits, including The Signature Theatre and Theatre for a New Audience, the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, “Sneaky Pete,” “Flesh & Bone,” “Greenleaf,” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” In the Works is a festival of new plays that will include a local premiere production; staged readings of a newly commissioned work, and a family show for young audiences. Deep-dive talkbacks and artmaking workshops for kids will round out the events. Additional information on In the Works, including show logistics, cast and ticketing will be announced later
this summer. “With In the Works we are taking the next step in deepening our commitment to our mission to produce not only the work of the Bard, but the work of artists inspired by his canon, and to build on the success of our commissions for our Schools and Streets programs,” said Jennifer Wintzer, interim producing director of the Festival. “ P rodu ci n g w or k b y local, contemporary artists has paved the way for us to broaden our
offerings with new works from artists across the country. We are excited to give our patrons even more opportunities to experience the Festival year-round with the added bonus of being indoors.” In addition to In the Works, season highlights include: In the Schools Education To u r & Programming: Feb. 5 - April 15 Missouri students will learn a bit more of the Bard’s take on identity and difference, issues people have grappled with
no matter the genre, culture or century, and all part of the 2018 Shakespeare Festival St. Louis award-winning Education Tour, Feb. 5 through April 15. The tour includes more than 150 performances and workshops conducted at more than 50 schools throughout the metro area and rural Missouri. In the Streets SHAKE 38: April 18-22 The Festival’s community organized marathon of the Bard’s 38-play canon, heads into its ninth season. Since its inaugural year, SHAKE 38 has grown from a 38-hour performance by 200 artists to a free, five-day event attracting more than 1,500 artists throughout the region and dozens of diverse community partners. Participants interpret one of the Bard’s plays any way they see fit – in any location. Kicking off this year’s marathon is the SHAKE 38 Fashion Fund Showcase set for 5 to 7 p.m., on Wed., April 18. Hosted in partnership with the St. Louis Fashion Fund, the event will be held at the St. Louis Fashion Incubator (1533 Washington Ave.) and will feature ensembles i n s p i re d b y S h a k e s p e a re ’ s canon, curated by local stylist Sarah Stallman. Prepare for the unexpected. “Blow, Winds”: June 15-16 This free, theatrical experience invites St. Louis neighborhoods to tell their stories. The production, set for 8:30 p.m. each night, will take place on the steps of the St. Louis Public Library, Central Branch (1301 Olive St.). Pre-show activities will kick off at 7 p.m. and will include a half dozen food trucks, live music and a family craft area. Playwright Nancy Bell authors the production. The event is presented in partnership with The St. Louis Public Library,
and community partners including The Urban League and Gentlemen of Vision. In the Park “Romeo & Juliet”: June 1-24; Preview performances: May 30-31 Elena Araoz will direct the main stage production, which runs nightly, excluding Tuesdays in Forest Park. The nightly Green Show will feature pre-show entertainment including music, synopsis, roaming performers, and family arts and crafts. The traditional “mini-play” version of the main stage show will be p e r f o r m e d F r i d a y t h ro u g h Sunday, each weekend of the production. About Shakespeare Festival St. Louis Since its inception in 2001, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis has surpassed the one million mark in attendance through its work In the Schools, In the Streets and In the Park with more than 710,000 people attending the free main stage productions at Shakespeare Glen in Forest Park. The organization has reached an additional 300,000 students In the Schools through its educational programming. In 2010, the Festival launched SHAKE 38, a marathon participatory presentation of Shakespeare’s entire 38-play canon community wide. In 2012, the Festival shut down its first street, Cherokee, to present a community-based play In the Streets. Leadership support for Shakespeare Festival St. Louis’ 2018 season is provided by the Whitaker Foundation. The Festival is also funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Missouri Arts Council, the Regional Arts Commission, and the Arts & Education Council of Greater St. Louis. The Arts Laumeier to celebrate its 2018 In-Residence Poet Stefene Russell For The Edge Laumeier Sculpture Park is pleased to announce 2018 In-Residence: Poet Stefene Russell, Culture Editor for St. Louis Magazine and a member of Poetry Scores, an arts collective dedicated to translating poetry into other media, including visual art, music, food and film. Russell is the author of the chapbook Inferna (Intagliata Press, 2013) and The Possum Codex (Otis Nebula, 2015). She is currently working on a collection, Lararium, to be published in December 2018 (Spartan Press). Russell previously participated in Laumeier ’s Poetry in Place event in 2011. “Laumeier ’s In-Residence Program supports our vision to serve as a gathering place for diverse social engagement—a ‘cultural landscape’ for the expression of a wide range of concepts, themes and ideas,” says Laumeier Curator Dana Turkovic. “This year, we invite Stefene Russell to use the written word as a vehicle to isolate the meeting place between art and poetry, with the added inspiration of the Park’s Outdoor Galleries and the natural, social environment.” Russell will participate in a variety of programs at Laumeier throughout the year, including several Walking Tours, Free Family Days and Conversation Series events. She will also host a new summer series at Laumeier: Picnic & Poetry in the Park. “It’s really exciting to think about all the artistic chemical reactions that will happen this year,” says Russell. I can’t wait to see what the poets come up with in response to the art. I can’t wait to see what happens when people who aren’t expecting to find poetry at Laumeier encounter it here. I want to show St. Louis what an amazing group
of poets we have in this city—and I can’t wait to see how poets start to think about their work differently by spending time at Laumeier.” Laumeier Sculpture Park launched its In-Residence Program in 2012 in an effort to bring other forms of social and intellectual artistic practice into the public spaces of the Park. In-Residence artists are chosen with the intent to deepen the exploration into topics and subjects relevant to Laumeier ’s cultural landscape and to complement thematic exhibitions. Artistic adventures The Rep to present “Born Yesterday”
With its lively patter, sharp satire and empowered female lead, Born Yesterday is a classic comedy that continues to surprise and entertain. Since its Broadway debut in 1946, Garson Kanin’s sendup of political gamesmanship has seen multiple prominent film and stage adaptations, including a 1995 production at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The Rep will produce the show once again this spring, running from March 14 to April 8. Pamela Hunt directs. Junkyard tycoon Harry Brock s w a g g e r s i n t o Wa s h i n g t o n , D . C., det ermi n e d t o bu y a senator or two. The monkey wrench in his schemes is Billie Dawn, his seemingly dim-witted ex-showgirl girlfriend. But when Brock hires a reporter to tutor Billie, she rapidly comes into her own as a force to be reckoned
with. This sharp and snappy comedy hilariously skewers Beltway corruption. Ruth Pferdehirt (One Man, Two Guvnors, 2014) returns to The Rep as the irrepressible Billie Dawn. Andy Prosky (who appeared with Pferdehirt in 2014’s Noises Off) brings plenty of attitude as Harry Brock. Aaron Bartz makes his Rep debut as reporter Paul Verrall. Rounding out the supporting cast are Ted Deasy (Evie’s Waltz, 2008), Kurt Zischke (All the Way, 2015), Gina Daniels, Randy Donaldson (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 1992), Tom Wethington and Michelle Hand (Sense and Sensibility, 2013). The ensemble includes Cassidy Flynn, Cece Hill, Maison Kelly, Cassandra Lopez and Ryan Lawson Maeske as various hotel employees. Hunt returns to direct a Rep show for the first time since 2011’s Beehive the 60’s Musical. She’s
directed 10 shows at our theatre, dating all the way back to 1983’s Tintypes. She’s bringing two frequent collaborators with her in scenic designer James Morgan and lighting designer Mary Jo Dondlinger, who both filled those same roles in The Rep’s production of Beehive. Costume designer Lou Bird (Constellations, 2017) and sound designer Rusty Wandall (The Humans, 2018) complete the design team. Tony Dearing will stage manage the production. Movies “Foxtrot” is a military stunner By LINDSEY BAHR Tribune News Service Watching the Israeli film “Foxtrot “ is like watching a dream play out. Wr i t e r - d i r e c t o r S a m u e l M a o z ’ s (“Lebanon”) excellent film is of course more structured than the average dream (or nightmare), with themes and Greek tragedy twists that are expertly crafted to test the heart, but there is a precise sensation of out-of-body powerlessness and comic absurdity throughout that can only be described as dream-like. And the overall experience is a meditative and powerful one. The story is ostensibly about a man, Michael Feldmann (Lior Ashkenazi) and a woman, Daphna Feldmann (Sarah Adler) immediately after they are told that their son, Jonathan, a soldier, has died in the line of duty. Daphna faints at the sight of the military messengers at her door and is taken to her room and sedated. Michael peers down the hallway, stunned and unable to do anything — cry, help, speak. The officers tell him to drink water every hour, get him a glass and set a recurring alarm on his phone to remind him. They tell him what will happen in the next few days. It is efficient, emotionless and routine, and all while this is happening around him, the camera barely moves from a close-up of Michael’s haunted face. Family members come by unannounced and uninvited and weep in Michael’s arms. But then his aging mother seems unfazed by the news. Occasional dance breaks (really) begin to make as much sense as anything else as we drift along with Michael in this initial state of shock. This whole first section, while beautifully shot, designed and acted, feels a little like wheel spinning in its repetitiveness. What is the point, you wonder. Then the film slaps you awake before it lulls you back to the trance state as it takes you to the remote military outpost where Jonathan (Yonathan Shiray) was stationed and looks back on the past six months of his life there. These scenes at the outpost begin to take on a surreal quality as Jonathan and his three comrades waste the days away on this desert stretch, wonder
Associated Press This image released by Sony Pictures Classics shows Itay Exlroad in a scene from “Foxtrot.” whether the shipping crate they sleep in is sinking on one end (it is, and makes for some amazing shots), and occasionally face tense moments checking the IDs of those attempting to cross this terribly arbitrary border. There is an intentional artificiality to this setting that feels at times like a Radiohead video cross pollinated with a David Lynch film. It is darkly funny, haunting and transfixing, even if it doesn’t immediately appear to be adding up to much other than the maddening detachment of military service. On one routine stop, the soldiers
make one couple get out of the car. The two people are dressed in formal wear and seem to be on their way somewhere. The guys make the woman dump the contents of her clutch onto the dirt road and stand there while they run their ID. While they are waiting, it begins to rain, first a little and then a downpour on the woman’s gown and updo. She holds back tears while trying to smile at her husband standing on the other side of the car. Whether this was meant to humiliate her, or perhaps to indicate how alien the soldiers have become, it’s just one of many
unforgettable sequences “Foxtrot” has to offer. Words here are sparse but purposeful, and one amazing monologue begins to connect all the dots and lend a greater significance to everything as it ties these two generations, Jonathan’s and Michael’s, to the one before it, the one that experienced the Holocaust. If this is all sounding rather vague, it’s meant to be. It is better to know next to nothing about “Foxtrot” going in, as this is absolutely a film that, like a dream, is best experienced and not explained.

Movies “Red Sparrow” never takes flight By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I’m getting a little tired of Jennifer Lawrence. Is it still allowable in the age of peak celebrity that we’re entitled to reach critical mass and become, uh, less than enthralled with a popular figure? It’s not Lawrence’s work that I’m carping about necessarily. Her only screen credit in 2017, “mother!”, tanked, but it was never expected to be anything more than a contractual obligation and/or pairing of her with her then-boyfriend, writer/ director Darren Aronofsky. It isn’t barely as good as this weekend’s “Red Sparrow”, which also isn’t all that good, yet this woman is everywhere. She’s being interviewed on the press junket. She’s spot hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. Her every waking thought on the gamut from Kardashian pregnancies to #metoo and Amy Schumer ’s wedding is assaulting my ears and eyeballs. Give it a minute. And then there she was at Sunday’s 90th
Academy Awards, gamely co-presenting w i t h t h e b a re l y a m b u l a t o r y J o d i e Foster and becoming a viral meme for climbing over seats with a full glass of Chardonnay in such a Jennifer Lawrence kind of way. I ’ m g l a d I g o t L a w re n c e ’ s “ R e d Sparrow” out of the way on Saturday because the next night’s Oscars were a hoot. I see that the television viewership was at an all-time low, but I thought those of us that stuck through the (total of) nine hours of ABC’s coverage were treated to a quality presentation. Host Kimmel was witty and off-beat. The stars were all self-conscious (Time’s Up fatigue?) and that’s a neat way to see your celebs. There were surprise winners, up to and including Best Picture, and seemingly many from Mexico. Guillermo del Toro had a big night and at times he made me both laugh and cry - and I did both during the walkabout audience-crashing segue. Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty even had a chance to redeem themselves and
I snickered every time “Envelopegate” was referenced. Ultimately I predicted only ten categories correctly on my ballot. But what do I know? Neither of the two films that prevented me from completing Oscar Quest 2017 (documentary feature “Faces Places” and Russian foreign language pic “Loveless”) were a factor. Maybe next year someone else might pretend “Black Panther” is of nominating caliber. My thoughts on “Red Sparrow” are meager. It confirms a suspicion that George and Elaine once joked about in the “Seinfeld” finale episode: Russia is bleak, even in springtime. Prima ballerina Dominika Egorova (Lawrence) goes from celebrated artist to castoff burden when her leg is shattered in a competitor ’s “accident”. In order to secure her ability to care for a sick relative, her uncle (Matthias Schoenaerts) persuades her to become a sparrow, an alluring spy type that uses her body and her wiles to entrance enemies of the deep state.
It’s even weirder than it sounds, this predatory relationship between uncle and niece. After a protracted montage of learning to manipulate men and use her psychosexuality as a weapon, something Dominika knew all along, a few conspiratorial figures (Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling) deem her ready for a mission where she seduces a CIA officer (Joel Edgerton) in order to learn his secrets. Or maybe she wants to turn him into a double agent. And then she’s a double agent. Or is it triple? Once you’re a quadruple agent, I realized during this film, the mathematics become geometrically inane and I started to wonder if this movie had chance to be as marginally good as either 2010’s “The Debt” or last year ’s “Atomic Blonde”. Turns out, no, it isn’t. “Red Sparrow” runs 139 minutes and is rated R for strong violence, torture, sexual content, language, and some graphic nudity. I give this film one star out of four.
“Death Wish” offers nothing good By KATIE WALSH Tribune News Service Since everything old is new again, it stands to reason that the 1974 Charles Bronson vehicle “Death Wish,” based on a 1972 novel by Brian Garfield, would be dredged up and remade for new audiences. But what resonated in the ’70s takes on a different tenor 44 years later. Context is everything, and the problem with this “Death Wish,” starring Bruce Willis, directed by Eli Roth, written by Joe Carnahan, is the concept would have always sat uneasy in our current state of affairs. “Death Wish” was postponed from its fall 2017 release date, presumably because it fell too close to the events of the October shooting in Las Vegas, in which 58 people died. The new release date is now unfortunately close to the events of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla.,
where teen survivors have pushed gun control to the forefront of the national conversation. It says so much about the epidemic of gun violence in this country that there is simply no weekend far enough away from a gun massacre to comfortably open a film about a lone vigilante gunman. The lone gunman is a character archetype that goes back to the beginning of cinema, from Westerns to spy movies to revenge tales. But it’s increasingly clear, as many of these films push the envelope on violence, that glorifying lone gunmen as heroes who are morally above the law is not only in bad taste: It’s simply irresponsible. Willis’ character, Dr. Paul Kersey, a surgeon, is given more than ample justification for his actions. His wife, Lucy (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter Jordan (Camila Morrone) are horrifically attacked during a home invasion robbery. Lucy is killed and Jordan is seriously injured.
Desperate he was unable to protect his family, Kersey takes matters into his own hands and sets out to enact some vigilante justice on the streets of Chicago, and possibly find the killers of his wife. Blasting away random drug dealers and car jackers, he earns himself the nickname of “Grim Reaper.” Roth has a horror background, and he can’t resist squishing around with the blood and guts. But his filmmaking craft is slick — the film moves and careens efficiently, held together with a drumtight edit by veteran action editor Mark Goldblatt. There are some cheeky, inspired set pieces, like a split-screen montage depicting Paul at work as a surgeon and practicing his firearm skills at home (he steals a Glock from a patient he operates on. No really.). As he’s saving lives, extracting bullets, he’s practicing to take lives, giving bullets. That’s the kind of arch commentary “Death Wish” should, and can’t maintain.
Roth always brings a sick gleefulness to his style, which doesn’t always serve the dark material. The film cranks up the audience with little jokes and references, and gets the audience cheering for the Grim Reaper before they even realize what they’re cheering for — and therein lies the problem. The film tries to have it both ways on the gun issue — Roth nails the perverse nature of gun culture in America, and includes commentary from radio hosts like Sway and Mancow who argue against lionizing the Grim Reaper, but that feels reverse-engineered after the fact. Ultimately, the audience doesn’t cheer when Sway passionately voices opposition to this normalization of violence. They cheer when Kersey, “a good guy with a gun” we’re told, blasts a bad guy with no recourse or consequence. What does that say about us? More importantly, what does that say about our movies? Nothing good in either case.

“Game Night”
March 15, 2018
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
A murder mystery party goes sideways when violent kidnappers arrive before the fake ones in “Game Night ,” which seems on the page to be like all the other disappointing action-comedies of late. You know the kind, where ordinary, upper middle class-ish suburbanites get thrown into some wacky underworld or genre situation. Spies live next door! We have to start a casino to put our kid through school! We killed a stripper! While it’s a formula that can be brilliant and/or fun (see: everything from “After Hours” to “Adventures in Babysitting”), recent efforts have seemed to result in features that feel more like extended Saturday Night Live sketches — a gimmick stretched far past its worth and padded with some car chases and contrived heart. Thankfully, “Game Night” does not fall into that trap. A charismatic ensemble cast, a sharp script and a few well-placed twists make “Game Night” one of the more enjoyable big studio comedies in recent memory. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (“Vacation”) direct off of a script by Mark Perez, whose credits include “Accepted” and “The Country Bears.” Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams anchor “Game Night” as Max and Annie, a married couple who love each other as much as they love games — trivia, charades, board varieties, you name it — and winning. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language, sexual references and some violence.” RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Red Sparrow”
In the James Bond films, sex with a globe-trotting spy seems to be fun, fun, fun. A martini, a tuxedo, a witty line or two and then it’s off to a luxurious bed with two tanned, muscular bodies. Not so in the new thriller “Red Sparrow,” where the sex is cold, ugly and often violent. This dark, meandering and cliche-ridden bummer starring a trying-hard Jennifer Lawrence tries to reach for a cool and stylish look at contemporary spycraft but often falls victim to cartoon violence and a muddled story. The creators may call it erotic but it’s as erotic as a visit to the dentist. Francis Lawrence, the director of the last three “Hunger Games” films, reunites with Lawrence for more adult fare but one likely to be remembered more for the outdoor junket photos of Lawrence in a thighslit dress in chilly London while her male co-creators wore coats. Based on a book by former CIA agent Jason Matthews, “Red Sparrow” stars Lawrence as Dominika, a Moscow ballerina who has to rethink her career after a devastating injury. Wi t h t h e a d v i c e o f h e r h i g h r a n k i n g s p y uncle, she goes to a “sparrow” school where the students are taught to use seduction as their main weapon. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong violence, torture, sexual content, language and some graphic nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 139 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
“Foxtrot”
Writer-director Samuel Maoz’s (“Lebanon”) excellent film is of course more structured than the average dream (or nightmare), with themes and Greek tragedy twists that are expertly crafted to test the heart, but there is a precise sensation of out-of-body powerlessness and comic absurdity throughout that can only be described as dream-like. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some sexual content including graphic images, and brief drug use.” RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
A platter from 17th Street Barbecue at 2700 17th St. in Marion, featuring pork shoulder, smoked turkey, brisket green beans and collard greens.
17th Street Barbecue in Marion By BILL ROSEBERRY For The Edge There’s nothing like good barbecue when you gotta eat. I’m always up for some good cue and my latest stop is a place that I’ve been urged to try by a slew of people for a long time — 17th Street Barbecue. Unfortunately I didn’t get to check out the original location in Murphysboro, but instead hit up the newer location in Marion. I was with my parents for a weekend trip and was fired up to finally get a chance to check this joint out.
The Marion location opened in 2004 — at 2700 17th St. — long after the Murphysboro location had reached legendary status. Founder Mike Mills is a member of the Barbecue Hall of Fame, a four-time world champion and three-time grand world champion at Memphis in May. He’s also written a book on his craft, as has his daughter Amy. The restaurant is ranked in the top 100 barbecue joints in the country, too. All that praise told me 17th Street knows what they’re doing and made it a destination trip for “You Gotta Eat.” When we pulled in the parking lot and I feasted my eyes on the bench in front of the restaurant in the form of a pig and then was smacked in the face with the delectable smell
of smoked meats, I was fired up. Once inside I was ready to get my mitts on a menu. I decided to go with the pick two off of the blue ribbon portion of the menu, which also came with two sides. I went with pork shoulder and smoked turkey with sides of brisket seasoned green beans and collard greens, which also included mouth watering brisket. When it arrived it was on a large tray and I started by lathering up my meat with 17th Street’s signature barbecue sauce. It’s a mustard based sauce. I’m not a huge mustard fan, but it was good. Dining Delights Eat Continued from Page 22 I started with the pork shoulder. It was succulent and tender as heck, practically melting in my mouth in each bite. It had a hearty flavor, a top notch pork dish. The turkey was really tender too, but didn’t really pack a unique twist or taste to it like I was hoping. It was good, but I was just hoping for a wow factor I guess after everything I’d heard about this place. The green beans fall under that same umbrella. I was expecting something more from them also, especially with the brisket added in, but they were just OK. Now I’ve saved the collard greens for last because wow, wow, wow. I was blown away by this masterpiece side. When collard greens are done right they are something to behold. This leafy green vegetable may leave something to be desired to most on its own, but when cooked with a little pork, turkey or brisket and spiced up correctly it can be a destination dish. I must say they do them right at 17th Street. They definitely hit a home run. They were awesome. At 17th Street they cook them with their signature brisket and are soaking in a mouthwatering vinegar based sauce. It was sweet, bitter, salty and meaty all in one and the greens were extremely tender. I could have eaten a bucket full of these things. They were hands down the best collard greens I’ve ever eaten. As for my dining cohorts, my dad went with a brisket sandwich with a baked sweet potato as his side. Mom went off the rails a little bit, ordering a walleye sandwich and Parmesan potato soup. I was disappointed she didn’t go with one of the barbecue classics, but
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
The entrance to 17th Street Barbecue located at 2700 17th St. in Marion. she was happy. She boasted that it was the best potato soup she’d ever had. I pilfered a couple bites and the Parmesan made it extremely sweet and creamy. It was very good. She also enjoyed her walleye sandwich. Dad let me swipe a couple bites of brisket, too and my oh my was it delicious. It was so tender and over the top smoky; very good. His sweet potato was very tender also and topped with a scrumptious whipped brown
sugar butter to top it off. It was also top notch. Overall I’d have to say 17th Street lived up to its hype. I was impressed. There was plenty more on the menu to go back and test out, too. The 17st wings on the appetizer menu looked good. They are smoked, finished on the grill and spun in their signature spicy wing sauce. The lotta bull sandwich sounded like a winner. It’s brisket layered with green peppers,
onions, horseradish cheddar cheese and crunchy pickles and finished off with a fried egg and their big sexy barbecue sauce. The reuben looked good too, featuring house-brined and smoked corned beef. They even offer a take on the horseshoe with a third-pound ground pork shoulder patty topped with fries and cheese served on sourdough bread. Of course the ribs are a go-to order at 17th Street. They are a three-time grand champion at
Memphis in May and on my radar when I get back. To check out everything 17th Street has to offer, visit their website at www.17bbq.com. I even bought some of their signature Magic Dust spice and have been using when cooking at home. It definitely makes things better. So next time you’re in Marion or Murphysboro, make a stop at 17th Street Barbecue. It’s definitely a destination spot when you gotta eat.

McDonald’s to offer fresh beef burgers By GREG TROTTER Chicago Tribune
C H I C A G O — McDonald’s plans to introduce fresh beef burgers in all U.S. restaurants by early May, the fast-food chain’s latest move aimed at drawing customers, boosting sales and propelling the business into the future. Quarter Pounders and Signature Crafted burgers will be made with patties t h a t a re c o o k e d u p o n ordering. All other burgers, including the Big Mac, will continue to be made with patties that are prepared in advance and then frozen. The announcement follows 18 months of testing in order to refine the cooking process so it doesn’t result in longer wait times for customers, said Chris Kempczinski, McDonald’s USA president. “McDonald’s is known for speed and convenience. What we had to figure out
is how do you cook only w h e n s o m e o n e o rd e r s it, but do it in a way that doesn’t impact service times. When people come to McDonald’s, they’re not going to wait five minutes for a burger,” Kempczinski said at a media event at an Oak Brook McDonald’s on Monday night. Fresh beef is already available in some 3,500 re s t a u r a n t s i n v a r i o u s markets across the U.S., but it won’t be available in Chicago until the beginning of May, the company said. The company tested the new offering at locations in Texas and Oklahoma. McDonald’s is rolling out its fresh beef patty, but is it good? » For McDonald’s customers, any impact to serving time and price will be minimal, Kempczinski said. For the Golden Arches, the hope is to sustain and even accelerate the company’s turnaround. Under Steve Easterbrook,
who took over as CEO in 2015, McDonald’s has unleashed an array of changes to make the Oak Brook-based chain more contemporary and relevant to today’s consumers. Since the long-awaited launch of all-day breakfast, also in 2015, the Golden Arches has started mobile ordering and delivery, modernized thousands of its U.S. restaurants, introduced premium menu i t e m s a n d o v e rh a u l e d its value menu, among other changes. This spring, McDonald’s is also planning to move from its longtime headquarters in Oak Brook to new corporate offices in Chicago’s Fulton Market district. Kempczinski, a former Kraft Foods Group executive who also joined McDonald’s in 2015, compared the operational challenge of rolling out fresh beef at all 14,000 U.S. restaurants to that
of launching all-day breakfast. Time will tell if the impact is similar, as all-day breakfast provided a significant boost to sales and foot traffic. “I’d love similar results to all-day breakfast, but the customer will ultimately decide,” Kempczinski said. The timing of the announcement could help bolster Wall Street confidence after a recent slide to start the year. On Friday, shares of McDonald’s stock fell almost 5 percent after analysts at RBC Capital Markets disappointed with the early performance of the chain’s new $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu lowered sales and earnings estimates for the company. But in the research note, David Palmer and his colleagues also noted the chain could outperform
expectations in the months ahead, in part because of the anticipated launch of fresh beef. R.J. Hottovy, an analyst with Morningstar, said he expects fresh beef to be an “incremental positive” on sales and foot traffic, rather than the more significant impact of all-day breakfast. Value items draw more traffic to McDonald’s, but premium items, like fresh beef burger, encourage consumers to “trade up” once they’re in the restaurants, Hottovy said. Even in the world of fast food, customers are seeking food they consider to be healthier and “closer to the source,” even while looking for a good deal, Hottovy said. “It’s a positive that people will recognize,” he said. “It does play with a lot of what today’s consumers are
looking for.” Of course, there are other fast-food chains already serving fresh beef burgers. Smaller rival Wendy’s has gone on the attack, reminding people on social media — and with a Super Bowl ad campaign — of Wendy’s “ f re s h , n e v e r f ro z e n ” marketing promise. Chains such as Wendy’s, Ta c o B e l l a n d B u rg e r King have also ramped up competitive value menu offerings in the past year or so. Like its competitors, McDonald’s is trying to offer both value and quality to woo consumers, making some moves in recent years like committing to using only eggs sourced from cage-free hens and, most recently, tweaking the Happy Meals to make them healthier.

Dining Delights Recipes to help you meet your goals For The Edge With a new year underway, many made the pledge to be healthier in 2018. A month into these new goals, some may have discovered that restrictive diets have lost their allure, and are starting to fall back into old habits. In honor of American Heart Month, try a different approach to healthy eating, specifically Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension, or DASH. Unlike many diets that leave followers feeling deprived, DASH is based on a flexible eating pattern. A DASH-style eating plan focuses on nutritious foods like low fat dairy, nuts and legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. According to Erin McGraw, registered dietitian and St. Louis District Dairy Council Nutrition Educator, “The foods recommended by the DASH eating plan are rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, and fiber, while low in sodium, saturated fat and trans fats.” The heart healthy foods encouraged by the DASH plan are delicious, convenient and affordable. They can easily be found at a local grocery store. In addition, there is no need for expensive supplements or specialty items. McGraw says, “The DASH plan calls for real foods such as low fat milk and yogurt, oatmeal, black beans, zucchini, and apples. DASH eaters can choose familiar favorites or try something new with this balanced approach that includes foods from all food groups.” Unlike many diets, the DASH eating plan is supported by s c i e n c e a n d re c o g n i z e d b y numerous organizations for its heart health benefits, including National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute. Additionally, 2018 marks the eighth consecutive year that DASH has been named “Best Overall Diet” by US News and World Report. “It is important to embrace an eating style that research has repeatedly shown to be beneficial. The DASH diet earns high marks all around,” notes McGraw. Many diets make big promises and often come up short on results. These restrictive plans can leave consumers feeling hungry and deprived. This year, take your heart health into your own hands with the flexible DASH eating plan. Making simple food choices, boosting heart health and improving overall health is worth a try! Dining Delights The Edge's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust St. St. Louis This is a great place to visit for good brews and good food. If you’re in to excellent craft beers then they’ll have plenty for you. The spacious brewery and restaurant gives you plenty of room to take a big group of friends for a night out. The old building is pretty cool, too. It was featured in the Kurt Russell flick “Escape from New York” back in the day. As for the food, the egg and chorizo sandwich is top notch and served on a ciabatta bun so it soaks up all the mess from the fried egg. It provides a nice spice kick. The meatloaf muffin is a must try, featuring a baconwrapped meatloaf and fried egg on an English muffin. Also check out the bag of pretzels on the snack portion of the menu. The Bavarian-style pretzels are served with a white cheddar cheese sauce that you will be tempted to guzzle straight from the container. Boogie’s Restaurant & Bar 2082 Vadalabene Dr. Maryville If chicken wings are your thing then you need to check this place out. Listed on the menu as “Boogie’s Famous Chicken Wings,” they are pretty delicious. I like the garlic parmesan version. They aren’t overly greasy and have the right level of garlic flavor to them. Get them double dipped. The fried chicken here is GBD (golden, brown and delicious) and worth a try. Also, don’t miss out on the baked sweet potato as a side. The butter and brown sugar turn it into more of a dessert. There are also daily specials to check out. Steel City Smokehouse 9 American Village Granite City You will find this place in the front portion of Ravanelli’s in Granite City. This
barbecue joint is pretty scrumptious. It’s small for eating in, but well worth a visit. Head to the assembly line counter and pick out your order to the server behind the guards. The brisket is really good, as is the peppered turkey. Lather it up with the chipotle blueberry sauce, you can’t go wrong with it. The sides are top notch too, most notably the cheesy hashbrowns and the macaroni and cheese. Wise Guys Gyros and Italian Beef 3200 Godfrey Rd. Godfrey This is a pretty new joint in Godfrey. The menu is comprised of Chicago-style classics like gyros, Italian beef and hot dogs. The gyro meat is extremely tender and they put a lot of twists on it, like the barbecue gyro with barbecue sauce, onion and tomato. Of course there is the Italian sausage sandwich which mixes those Chicago classics of Italian beef and a juicy Italian sausage link. You can’t go wrong with that. The pizza puff is really good, with beef, mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce stuffed inside a flaky pastry shell. It’s in an old fast food restaurant, so nothing fancy aesthetically, but still worth a trip. Foundry Public House 126 N. Main St. Edwardsville A hip newer spot on the Edwardsville food scene, visit here to get your gourmet burger fix and relax with some friends. Great burgers, including the J-Bird topped with a sunny side up egg. The chicken wings are pretty good, too. Try the sweet heat, they aren't really spicy, more of a sweet chili taste. If you're looking for a unique experience check out the salmon reuben. It will confuse your palate at first, but you won't be disappointed. It's small, so can get a little packed, but has friendly service and a pretty good craft beer menu to pass the time. Tucanos Brazilian Grill 1520 S. 5th St. St. Charles Sensational. I almost don't have the
words to describe this meat mecca. For $25 order Tucanos Famous Churrasco and get an infinity of grilled meats. Each table includes a stick with red at one end and green at the other. Green means go, red means stop. As long as you go green the grilled food keeps coming. Anything from turkey wrapped in bacon to prime rib to grilled pineapple to salmon to chicken hearts, it's amazing the stuff they will bring. Also hit the buffet and grab a salad, some fried bananas and some scrumptious fried cheese. I'd recommend going in a group. It's a lot of fun and you'll be there awhile.
St. Louis If you like hot dogs with a quirky twist, then this is the place for you. The creation of Steve Ewing, the lead singer for The Urge, this place is awesome. It's small and only open for lunch hours Monday through Saturday, but worth a visit. The Gorilla Mac and Cheese Dog is awesome, comprised of a smoked Nathan's hot dog, topped with creamy mac and cheese, bacon and French fried onions. The Bacon Bacon Jamaican is great too, with two slices of bacon, pepper jack cheese, jerk seasoning, bell peppers and sweet chipotle sauce. There are plenty of other quirky dogs there, too. There is now a second location in the Tower Grove neighborhood.
Steve's Hot Dogs on The Hill 2131 Marconi Ave.

Married couple’s journey began at Whole Foods By DREW JACKSON
The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) It was love at first cheese sample for Ross Aronson and Jacqueline Troutman. When the couple met in N e w Yo r k , s p e n d i n g t i m e at Whole Foods was a part of their courtship. They’d go on romantic meanderings around the city, sometimes up to 100 blocks, stopping here and there to pick out specifi c ingredients for their meals, or seeking out the best samples. Couples often have favorite restaurants, the scenes of cherished moments,
but grocery stores rarely get that kind of love. “It’s such a loving thing to prepare a meal,” Jacqueline said. “I think it can seem ordinary or a chore, but for us it’s an exploration. Ross loves inventing things in the kitchen; it’s a fun way to show care and appreciation for someone.” It only made sense then, at least to them, for Ross to propose to Jacqueline — and get married — where their love story flourished. T h e c o u p l e , f a i r l y re c e n t transplants to North Carolina, wed at the Whole Foods in their new home of Chapel Hill. They gathered one year to the date in the spot where Ross

proposed, the flower department. For the proposal, he had arranged a special collection of sampling stations through Whole Foods’ marketing department, some of Jacqueline’s favorites: pulled pork, cheesecake, p u m p k i n b r e a d , t o g e t h e r, completing a puzzle that made a heart shaped cake. “It was awesome,” said Jacqueline, now Aronson. As they began planning the wedding, the glow of the proposal never faded, and Whole Foods became more than a grocery store. “After the engagement happened, we let it simmer for a while,” Jacqueline said, pun

definitely intended. They’re into puns. “It was really special to me, it was our place, our tradition, it was really nice to relive it every time we went,” she said. “We thought, how do we top that? It was perfect. Maybe we can match it.” Ross, who attends UNC’s orthodontics graduate school, and Jacqueline, who works in marketing, reached back to Whole Foods to see if it was open to playing part-time wedding venue. The grocer was immediately game. From that point, Krista Deitsch and Whitney Harlos of Whole Foods helped put the big day together,
with Deitsch essentially becoming their wedding planner, they said. They kept their friends and family in the dark on the Whole Foods part of the wedding and designed the program themselves, writing their vows and filling the store with matrimony-related puns. Favorites including: “rib-eye-do,” “as long as we both shallot live,” “cheese said yes,” “dairytale wedding.” An orthodontics classmate of Ross’ happens to be a talented violinist and performed at the ceremony, officiated by Jacqueline’s second cousin, who also is in dentistry.
