SIUE Arts & Issues to host political debate James Carville By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

T

he SIUE Arts & Issues 2013-14 season comes to a close when it presents a debate between James Carville, one of the most recognizable figures in politics, and former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at 7:30 p.m. on April 3 in the Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom. This blockbuster Arts & Issues event, presented by the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences’ Colloquium and the Greater St. Louis Humanities Festival, brings together James “The Ragin’ Cajun” Carville and Alberto Gonzales, the first Hispanic to lead the nation’s largest law enforcement office, in a one-time debate. The two will sound off on immigration during the first part of the program and address some of the hot issues of our times during the second half. Carville, a political icon and FOX News

Alberto Gonzales Contributor, is well-known for his analysis of the Obama Administration, congress and the global political landscape with his signature energy and humor. Also known for his ability to take political underdogs and remaking them into upset winners, Carville’s winning streak began in 1986 when he guided Robert Casey in Pennsylvania to a gubernatorial victory. He did the same thing in 1987 with Wallace Wilkinson in his run for Kentucky Governor and with Pennsylvania Senator Frank Lautenberg in 1988. Carville repeated his success with Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller in 1990 and in 1991 Carville drew national attention when he brought Pennsylvania Senator Harris Wofford from 40 points behind in the polls to win a landslide and upset victory over former Pennsylvania Governor and U.S. Attorney General Richard Thornburgh. Carville’s most notable victory, however, was when he helped former President Bill Clinton win the presidency in 1992. On the other side of the aisle is Gonzales, who served as White House Counsel to

George W. Bush and later was appointed the 80th Attorney General of the United States by President Bush. Gonzales played a vital role in the the war on terror and the changing role of the Department of Justice after 9/11. Having served during one of the most turbulent times of our nation’s history, Gonzales offers a unique perspective on homeland security and the policies necessary for keeping our nation safe. According to his biography online, Gonzales focused on modernizing the nation’s laws, as Attorney General, to effectively deal with the dangers facing the nation. “He established the Justice Department’s national security division and pioneered new strategies for prosecuting terrorism suspects. In addition to his attention on national security, Gonzales focused on corporate and public integrity, the causes and remedies of gang violence, and he created the Project Safe Childhood initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse,” the biography states. A native Texan, Gonzales is one of eight children, and a graduate of Rice University. He is the only family member who went to

college. “After receiving his law degree from Harvard Law School, Gonzales joined the law firm of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. in Houston where he later became a partner,” the biography further states. “In 1995, he was named general counsel to then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, eventually rising to serve as Secretary of State of Texas in 1997 and as Justice to the Texas Supreme Court in 1999.” Gonzales currently works in the government relations, government investigations and white collar defense areas for Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP, one of Nashville’s largest law firms. Tickets for the Arts & Issues Carville and Gonzales debate may be purchased at the Dunham Hall Fine Arts Box Office from 8 a.m. until noon, the Information Booth at the Morris University Center, by calling 618650-5774, or online at artsandissues.com. university approvals and recently received approval from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA) in January 2014. SIUE is the first higher education institution in the St. Louis metropolitan area to offer a doctoral degree for nurse anesthetists. The new program will retain its core anesthesia curriculum, but will also incorporate the School’s DNP curriculum. The master ’s program requires 31 months, 72 credit hours and 2,428 practicum hours. The DNP NA will require 36 months, 80 credit hours and 2,740 practicum hours. The transition to the DNP reflects the changes in the national health care system, as well as the growing need for nursing leaders to have extensive knowledge to design, implement and assess care. “We are extremely excited that the SIUE nurse anesthesia program will now lead to a DNP degree,” said Dr. Kathy Ketchum, assistant dean for graduate programs. “Our students will incorporate advanced leadership and evidence-based skills into their theoryguided anesthesia practice to achieve the highest quality patient outcomes.” Interim Dean Anne Perry noted that the approval from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs is essential to ensure continued academic preparation for nurse anesthesia providers in the region. By

2022, COA is requiring all nurse anesthesia programs to transition their curricula from a master of science to a doctor of nursing practice. S t u d e n t s c u r re n t l y e n ro l l e d i n t h e program will receive a master’s degree with a specialization in nurse anesthesia. Those submitting applications for the 2014 cycle will be applying for the DNP NA, with accepted students beginning the new program in May 2015. The SIUE School of Nursing began offering a post-baccalaureate nurse anesthesia master’s in 1990. The SIUE School of Nursing’s fully accredited programs are committed to creating excellence in nursing leadership through innovative teaching, evidence-based practice, quality research, patient advocacy and community service. Enrolling nearly 1,000 students in its baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral programs, the School develops leaders in pursuit of shaping the nursing profession and impacting the health care environment. Through expanded programs located on the SIU Carbondale campus and SIU School of Medicine campus, the SIUE School of Nursing is helping to solve the region’s shortage of baccalaureate-prepared nurses and enhance the quality of nursing practice within hospitals and medical centers.

People A real night at the museum Guests offered an opportunity to spend an evening under the Arch For The Edge

T

he Museum of Westward Expansion will host the fourth annual Night at the Museum, Saturday, March 22, from 6 to 9 pm, offering visitors a unique opportunity to interact with period-costumed characters, hear stories of the early American West and participate in hands-on activities. Each year, Night at the Museum attracts families from across the region seeking a fun way to learn about our history. Additionally, this will be one of the last opportunities to experience the current exhibits of the museum before it closes for extensive renovations as part of the CityArchRiver 2015 project. “This is one of the last major events the museum will host before its construction and renovation, which will bring an entirely new experience,” said Ann Honious, Chief, Museum Services and Interpretation, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “We encourage guests to spend an evening with us to learn about America’s past and experience the Gateway Arch.” Night at the Museum features historical characters dressed in period clothing—from pioneers and mountain men to frontier soldiers—who will share their tales of the settling of the American West and recount what life was like during these early times in American history. Kids can take part in several Old West-themed activities such as buffalo chip races, building their own branding irons, exploring a tipi, singing songs and learning about keel boat cordelling. And now is the perfect time to visit the museum. Although the Museum of Westward Expansion will close for CityArchRiver 2015 renovations, the Gateway Arch will remain open and continue to offer Journey to the Top tram rides. The Gateway Arch Riverboats will also remain open throughout construction. The boats’ cruise season begins this Saturday, March 1. Space is limited and reservations are required. Tickets are $15 per person (children 2 and under are free) and include a tram ride to the top of the Arch and hot dog dinner. Kids ages 3-15 will receive passes for a future Gateway Arch Riverboat sightseeing cruise. For reservations and more information, call 877-982-1410 or visit www.gatewayarch.com. Those who purchase their tickets online at http://ticketsforthearch.com will receive free parking at the Gateway Arch Parking Garage.

SIUE rooftop garden seeks crowdfunding For The Edge People around the world have the opportunity to contribute to a vegetable rooftop garden project at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. An SIUE collaborative research team is seeking financial support for the project by garnering donations via online crowdfunding. The project team has posted the Veggie Rooftop Garden project on superiorideas.org to initially raise $8,100 from the community to support the students working on the project. Led by Susan Morgan, professor of civil engineering and associate dean of the SIUE Graduate School, and Bill Retzlaff, professor of biological sciences and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the project will establish a vegetable garden on the patio rooftop of the Morris University Center. "The concept builds upon the n o t i o n o f u s i n g “ g re e n ro o f ” technology for a sustainable approach to stormwater management and energy consumption, while studying the effects of using a waste product in a growth medium," Morgan said. "But above that, the garden will provide learning and job experiences for both graduate and undergraduate students." Students will learn about green roof technology and vegetable production. All produce will be used by SIUE Dining Services or donated to initiatives such as The Campus Kitchen at SIUE, which

SIUE recently received a $5,000 grant sponsored by The Campus Kitchens Project Inc. to open a local Campus Kitchen. The collaborative effort is part of the SIUE’s Green Roof Environmental Evaluation Network (G.R.E.E.N.). In this project, G.R.E.E.N. is partnering with Filtrexx, St. Louis

Composting and Illinois American Water to install the vegetable rooftop garden. Funds will go to support the work of an undergraduate student and a graduate student on the project. It is hoped that by raising many small donations from a large network of donors, the project can reach its funding goal quickly. Those interested in providing donations to the project

“Hazzard” favorite to appear at car show The actor who made Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane an icon of the early 1980s is the featured celebrity at this year’s Greenville Graffiti Car Show. James Best, one of the co-stars of “The Dukes of Hazzard,” will sign autographs and serve as a celebrity judge of the classic cars and trucks on Saturday, June 14 in downtown Greenville. He will also present his one man show “Best of Hollywood” on Friday, June 13. Best’s career began in 1950 and he soon appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest legends including James Stewart in “Winchester ’73” and Humphrey Bogart in “The Caine Mutiny.” Best was also featured in two of Universal Pictures biggest franchises---“Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair” and “Francis Goes to West Point.” Fans of 1950s horror movies may remember James Best as the star of the 1959 cult classic “The Killer Shrews.” His television appearances included two episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” and three episodes of “The Twilight Zone.” With over 180 acting credits to his name, Best’s most beloved character was Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane from 1979 to 1985 on “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Rosco, under the direction of Boss Hogg, spent each week chasing after the Duke boys. Car show organizers have received numerous requests to bring in a cast member from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Best is expected to be a big draw to the event. In conjunction with his appearance at the Greenville Graffiti Car Show, Best’s one man show---“Best of Hollywood”---will be performed the night before at the Globe Theater,

on the Greenville square. This 90 minute journey through Best’s career offers fans an intimate look behind the curtains, soundstages, and backlots of the studios and stars. Television and movie clips will be woven through humorous anecdotes, reminiscences, and Best’s imitation of friend and co-star James Stewart. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show is Saturday, June 14 and will feature a variety of contests, food, and fun. The show is open to 1989 and older cars and trucks. Further details concerning the car show will be released soon. For more information, contact the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272.

Music Tuning in Stewart, Santana to Sheldon to present team up at Scottrade EELS The Sheldon Sessions, presented Center by The Sheldon in partnership with AEG Live announced today that Rod Stewart and Santana, two of music’s most influential hit makers and dynamic live performers, will join forces and embark on an 18concert North American tour this summer. Kicking-off May 23 in Albany, NY, the tour unites two musical trailblazers who have helped redefine the sound of popular music for the last five decades through their combined love of rock, soul, world rhythms, funk, jazz and blues. Both Stewart and Santana are known for their high-energy, hit-packed live concerts -- making the combination an incomparable experience for all music fans. The duo will appear on June 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis Tickets are on sale now. With his singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has built one of the most successful and enduring music careers of all time. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has amassed sales of more than 150 million albums worldwide and has countless charttopping hits and industry accolades - including two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was bestowed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen of England. In May 2013, Stewart released Time, his first rock album in a dozen years, on Capitol Records. The album features 11 original tracks and marks Rod’s return to songwriting after nearly two decades. Time entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, setting a new British record for the longest gap between chart-topping albums by an artist -- and in the US, it marked Stewart’s highestcharting album of original material since 1979. In addition to touring, Stewart headlines one of Las Vegas’ most critically and commercially successful residencies at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. For forty years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 100 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won ten G r a m m y Aw a r d s a n d t h r e e Latin Grammy Awards. He won a record-tying nine Grammys for a single project for 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”). He has also received t h e B i l l b o a rd C e n t u r y Aw a rd (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), and received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009). Among many other honors, Carlos Santana has also been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Celebrating the chart debut of "Guitar Heaven" (Arista) in 2010, Santana joined the ranks of the Rolling Stones as the only musical act in chart history to score at least one Top 10 album in every decade beginning with the 1960s. He is also currently headlining at a multi-year residency at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. In 2013, Carlos Santana was the recipient of the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Award. Santana’s new album "Corazon" (RCA/Sony Latin Iberia) due out May 6, 2014 is a collaborative effort with the biggest names in Latin music.

Released in

October 2012 Gold Dust included “Flavor,” which was remixed by the late DJ Peter Rauhofer and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Club Dance Chart in February 2013. Religion Religion briefs House approves individual religious exemption to health care law WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Individuals who practice faith healing instead of seeking medical attention would be exempt from the health care law’s insurance requirement under legislation passed Tuesday by the House. The bill would exempt Americans who notify the IRS that covered health care would violate their “sincerely held religious beliefs.” Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock (SHAHK) said insincere applicants would forfeit the exemption and be fined if they voluntarily sought medical treatment. California Democrat Henry Waxman warned that the legislation would force the IRS to approve almost all requests for the exemption

or try to determine whether religious beliefs are “sincerely held.” He said the IRS also would have difficulty determining whether an exempt person’s medical treatment was voluntary. The legislation passed after Schock said lawmakers were sworn “before God to protect the religious freedoms of every American.” It’s unlikely to pass the Democratic Senate.

The Arts Artistic adventures FOTAD season continues with "Cinderella, or the Story of Bigfoot" A Season for the Child (SfC), the family-oriented live theater season— presented by the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Friends of Theater and Dance (FOTAD) —will end its 24th season with "Cinderella, or the Story of Bigfoot" at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 22. "Cinderella, or the Story of Bigfoot" will be staged in SIUE’s Katherine Dunham Hall by Curtains Up Theatre Company, based in Edwardsville and Collinsville. In addition, students from Southwestern Illinois College will interpret the play for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. This humorous retelling of the traditional story of Cinderella is a wonderful tale of how true beauty comes from within and that it’s not just OK to be yourself, but that it’s the only way to be. Full of unexpected twists, the story presents great characters including Ella Le Grand, an orphan living in her father’s house, which is run by her cruel and selfish stepmother. When Ella and her stepfamily are invited to the King’s ball, she is assisted by Dweezil Twistup, fairy and God-dude extraordinaire, and his sidekick, Junior. When Ella finally meets Prince Alfonse XIII in his leather jacket and white T-shirt, she finds that he’s “the coolest cat in the kingdom. A Season for the Child, which p re m i e re d i n 1 9 9 0 , f e a t u re s adaptations of children’s stories using interactive techniques that not only delight children and parents, but also provide a learning experience. Individual tickets for the March 22 performance of "Cinderella, or the Story of Bigfoot", are $5 per person and are available through the SIUE Fine Arts box office, (618) 650-2774. FOTAD also has an endowment to help fund the merit scholarship program. Those interested in donating to the endowment may contact Greg Conroy, (618) 692-0874. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville provides students with a high quality, affordable education that prepares them for successful careers and lives of purpose. Built on the foundation of a broad-based liberal education, and enhanced by hands-on research and real-world experiences, the academic preparation SIUE students receive equips them to thrive in the global marketplace and make our communities better places to live. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mississippi River’s rich bottom land and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of nearly 14,000.

The Edison to host "Scattered" For The Edge Water. It is the source of life, the indispensible molecule, the elemental force that carves rivers, topples mountains, nurtures crops and extinguishes flame. In “Scattered,” Motionhouse Dance Theatre — one of the United Kingdom’s foremost touring companies — combines daring movement, mid-air acrobatics and state-of-theart projection technology to capture the might, majesty and savagery of water. On Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, Motionhouse will bring this audacious, physics-defying program to St. Louis as part of the Edison Ovations Series at Washington University.

16

A world of water Subtitled “A meteor shower of unlikely moments,” “Scattered” explores the human relationship with water in all its mutable forms and breathtaking environments. The evening-length work unfolds on a giant curved cyclorama, resembling a skateboarder’s half-pipe, which doubles as a projection screen. Seven dancers, often outfitted with aerial harnesses, face down rainstorms and tumble down waterfalls. They brave rolling currents and oceanic depths. They stagger through parched deserts and slide across ice and snow. “We truly live in a world of water — the Earth is not called the blue planet for nothing!” said artistic director Kevin Finnan, who cofounded Motionhouse with Louise Richards in 1988. “We cannot live without it; it is

fundamental to our existence, and we are born of fluid. Yet we only notice it when we have too much or too little of it. “Water sustains our bodies” and is also their principal component, Finnan added. Without water, “our bodies would be crushed by gravity.” The Philadelphia Inquirer called “Scattered” “joyous, tender, frenetic, disturbing, funny and absolutely thrilling.” The Times (U.K.) added that, “The performance is practically jet-propelled — the quicksilver cast almost never stops moving. Dazzling.” “Motionhouse like to leave their audiences physically disarranged – gobsmacked, stunned, overawed,” added The Guardian. “With a cast of super-athletic dancers, as dexterous in the air with ropes as they are

powerful on the floor, this is a company that has long cornered the high-impact end of the dance market.” Tickets and sponsors Performances of “Scattered” will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22. Tickets are $36, or $32 seniors, $28 for WUSTL faculty and staff and $20 for students and children. Tickets are available at the Edison Box Office, located in the Mallinckrodt Center, 6465 Forsyth Blvd.; and online, at edison. wustl.edu. For more information, call 314-9356543 or email edison@wustl.edu. Edison programs are made possible with support from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis; and private contributors.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"RoboCop"

The original 1987 “RoboCop,” Dutch director Paul Verhoeven’s first Hollywood film, isn’t so much a movie to revere as a bit of brutalism to behold. It had a grim comic vibe, satirizing the savagery of both corporate bloodthirstiness and justice-seeking rampages. Peter Weller’s RoboCop was a techno-Frankenstein created to tame Detroit’s rampant crime: Dirty Harry for dystopia. Remaking “RoboCop” is like trying to recreate a nightmare. That’s one reason why plans to remake the film were meant with mostly dubious derision: Hollywood, particularly nowadays, isn’t in the business of nihilism. Post-apocalyptic films may be all the rage, but a movie about a cop’s dead body shoved into a robot is a tad darker than Jennifer Lawrence running through the woods. Directed by Jose Padilha (the Brazilian filmmaker who made the excellent documentary “Bus 174” before shifting into action with “Elite Squad”), this “RoboCop” has updated the dystopia with some clever ideas and better acting, while at the same time sanitizing any satire with video-game polish and sequel baiting. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material.” RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"In Secret"

There have been many stage and screen adaptations of “Therese Raquin,” Emile Zola’s 1867 novel about love and betrayal. Perhaps most notable was filmmaker Marcel Carne’s 1953 version, “The Adultress,” starring Simone Signoret and Raf Vallone. It was a classic slice of film noir; a feverish take on a sordid love affair. “In Secret” is the latest rendering of Zola’s bleak story. Elizabeth Olsen, Oscar Isaacs, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange offer compelling performances in a provocative remake that’s stirring until its withered end. Set in 1860s France, Therese (played seductively by Olsen) is sent to live with her aunt, Madame Raquin (Lange), an entitled and needy dame who forces her niece to marry her sickly son, Camille (played delicately and artfully by Felton). When Camille gets a job as a clerk in Paris, the three move from the country to the bustling city, where Madame Raquin opens a fabric shop. Resigned to an uninspired life working in her aunt’s store, Therese, who’s become increasingly lascivious, is even welcoming the idea of sex with her effeminate cousin to satisfy her desires. RATEDL R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sexual content and brief violent images.” RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me”

For a documentary subject as forceful as Elaine Stritch, filmmakers may need to turn to nature — a typhoon might do it — to find anything approximate. Even the camera must warily keep its distance in “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me.” She warns its operator when he gets too close: “I don’t know

18

On the Edge of the Weekend

whether this is a skin commercial, or what.” Stritch captivates just walking down the street: greeting fans, chastising cabs, swaying to the music of the sidewalk. “I wish I could f---ing drive,” she says at the opening of the documentary. “Then I’d really be a menace.” The strong types usually seen in movies— caped men with powers, action heroes with six-packs — have nothing on this long-legged, 89-year-old New York broad. Stritch, who has long eschewed pants of any sort, has the kind of ferocious voice that old age can’t quiet. Chiemi Karasawa’s “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me” is an irresistibly entertaining documentary that captures Stritch during what she unsentimentally calls “almost post-time.” After seven decades performing in New York — on Broadway, in countless cabaret nights at the Cafe Carlyle — Stritch’s enormous energy has been knocked by the increasing years, diabetes, and surgeries on her hip and eyes. RATEDL not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. Contains expletives. RUNNING TIME: 82 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Stalingrad”

Big screen. Big effects. Big budget. Big box office. It’s clear that Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk was going for something, well, big, with “Stalingrad,” the first-ever Russian film in IMAX 3D. And in a sense, that’s perfectly apt, because it would be hard to overstate how large the Battle of Stalingrad looms in the Russian psyche. The crucial Soviet victory over the Nazis in the battle, which lasted six months and was one of the bloodiest in modern warfare, was a key turning point of World War II — or what the Russians call the Great Patriotic War. And the rewards for Bondarchuk have been, yes, big, so far. “Stalingrad,” with a reported $30 million budget, is a giant hit in Russia — the studio calls it the highest-grossing Russian movie of all time — and also has done huge box office in China. Now, it’s coming to IMAX 3D screens in the United States for a week, during which the filmmakers hope to spark further interest. The only problem is that the film, while certainly impressive in its effects and a few rock-’em sock-’em battle scenes, is sorely lacking in crucial areas, namely characterization and narrative. Perhaps it wouldn’t matter, if the film didn’t attempt to be not only a blockbuster but a heart-tugging, intimate story about bravery, endurance, sacrifice and love. To accomplish that, you need a compelling script and complex characters. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of war violence.” RUNNING TIME: 135 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Need for Speed"

It takes a lot for a film based on a video game to impress a crowd these days, given the dazzling advancements in gaming technology. But “Need for Speed,” based on the hit EA Entertainment racing game that’s sold 150 million units, could now drive some of that success toward the box office. Despite its clichid elements, this adrenaline-fueled stunt fest is an unequivocal thrill that deserves to be seen on the big screen. Starring “Breaking Bad’s” Aaron Paul, “Need for Speed” is fiercely entertaining, loaded with beautiful cars, winding roads and racers in leather coats. Since “Breaking Bad” ended last year, Paul has been making

March 20, 2014

an impressive transition to film, starting with the indie drama “Hellion,” which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. In “Need for Speed,” he flexes his machismo as a street racer on a vendetta. Following a two-year prison sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, mechanic and race driver Tobey Marshall (Paul) is determined to get revenge on Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper), the man who framed him. To do so, Tobey drives from New York to California to battle Dino in a high-stakes race dubbed the De Leon. Along for the ride are British car buff Julia (Imogen Poots) and Benny (Scott Mescudi, also known as recording artist Kid Cudi), the jovial airborne lookout of Tobey’s crew. Written by first-timer George Gatins, who produced “She’s Out of My League,” the plot is heavy with questionable logic and monotonous dialogue. Modeled after classic 1960s and 1970s action films, where the cars were key, “Need for Speed” often attempts to be a dramatic thriller. But it’s best when consciously comical. Trite conventions, like Tobey’s brooding demeanor, punctuated by his deep monotone and acute stare, are effective, although overdone at times. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of reckless street racing, disturbing crash scenes, nudity and crude language.” RUNNING TIME: 130 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Ernest & Celestine"

The delicate and lovingly hand-made “Ernest & Celestine” captures the whimsy and warmth of a dearly felt children’s picture book like few movies before. The Oscar-nominated animated French-Belgian film is a simply rendered tale about a friendship between a mouse and a bear, painted with watercolor backgrounds and handsketched characters. In a movie landscape crowded with awesome digital animations and forgettable big-budget cartoon blockbusters, “Ernest & Celestine” is a humble oasis of gentle and inventive storytelling. Though the film lost out to Disney’s mighty “Frozen” at the Academy Awards, children and adults will be thrilled by this meek underdog, which is being released both in its original French and an English redubbing voiced by Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti and child actress Mackenzie Foy. (This review is of the French original, which holds the charm of hearing little children mice speaking timidly in French. Be warned: The cuteness is almost unbearable.) An orphanage of mice has gathered around Celestine (voiced by Pauline Brunner, the daughter of “Triplets of Belleville” producer Didier Brunner, also a producer here), a bright young mouse who — despite the stern warnings of their frightful headmaster (Anne-Marie Loop) that such ideas are dangerous — imagines a bear and mouse as pals. In the world of “Ernest & Celestine,” this is tantamount to heresy. The mice live below ground and the bears above — the car-driving, shop-keeping human equivalents in this universe. Their lone interaction is when a bear cub loses a tooth, which the “fairy mouse” replaces with a coin. (This, it turns out, is a mutually beneficial deal, since mice dentists depend on bear teeth to fashion tooth replacements.) RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of American for “some scary moments.” RUNNINT TIME: 80 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

This film image released by the Sundance Selects shows Elaine Stritch in a scene from "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me."

Elaine Stritch remains undimmed By JAKE COYLE Associated Press For a documentary subject as forceful as Elaine Stritch, filmmakers may need to turn to nature — a typhoon might do it — to find anything approximate. Even the camera must warily keep its distance in “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me.” She warns its operator when he gets too close: “I don’t know whether this is a skin commercial, or what.” Stritch captivates just walking down the street: greeting fans, chastising cabs, swaying to the music of the sidewalk. “I wish I could f---ing drive,” she says at the opening of the documentary. “Then I’d really be a menace.” The strong types usually seen in movies— caped men with powers, action heroes with six-packs — have nothing on this long-legged, 89-year-old New York broad. Stritch, who has long eschewed pants of any sort, has the kind

of ferocious voice that old age can’t quiet. But “Shoot Me,” made over the last few years, is a document not of Stritch’s dwindling, but of her feisty persistence. As the film shows, she has trouble remembering lyrics and sometimes struggles to get out of bed. At home and during rehearsals, it chronicles her grand exit from New York, her home since she was 17, and her decision to retire back to Michigan. Stritch is a paragon of old-fashioned show

business: A brassy and blunt survivor of New York theater life. More than a decade ago, the New York Landmarks Conservancy named her a living landmark. “I like the courage of age,” she declares. Karasawa shoots Stritch in intimate, unglamorous situations, most notably one night in a hospital bed with curlers in her hair, chastened by a health scare: “It’s time for me,” she says. “I can feel it everywhere.” A theatrical being down to her soul, Stritch is often a fascinating companion, throwing off such candid reflections, joining an elevator operator in song, or miming a limp to avoid a parking ticket in the Hamptons. But she is also, unquestionably, a handful. Her needs are many, which her musical director Rob Bowman patiently tries to meet. She repeatedly criticizes the documentary’s very own cameraman, ordering him to more aggressively shoot her unpacking a box of

her cherished English muffins. The question of how taxing it is to work with Stritch is unavoidable. D.A. Pennebaker ’s 1970 documentary on the cast recording of “Company” showed her sparring with Stephen Sondheim. In “Shoot Me,” we glimpse a letter from Woody Allen before they shot the film “September,” warning her of overly dramatic behavior and requesting that she “keep the questioning to a rock-bottom minimum.” Tina Fey, who cast Stritch in a recurring role on her sitcom “30 Rock,” says: “It’s a bear. And it’s always worth it.” Stritch is worth it not just because of her talent, but for her inspiring perseverance. She’s a born entertainer, and a spirited remnant of a disappeared New York. She sings from “Follies”: “Good times and bum times, I’ve seen them all/ And, my dear, I’m still here.”

"Mr. Peabody & Sherman" gets it right By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Clearly, the episodes of "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show "that I remember watching in my childhood were reruns. Maybe my fondness for them came from the fact that they were watched by my parents when they were children; I've always be fascinated by how their experiences would have been different from mine. But the 1959-1964 series of cartoons wasn't super-complicated. You had a flying squirrel that seemed to enjoy spending his time with a dim-witted moose. Together, they were charged with upholding Cold War-era American ideals against the nefarious Russians Boris and Natasha (I do not recommend the

2000 feature starring Robert De Niro). Interspersed throughout their show were other segments like Fractured Fairytales, where something just wasn't quite right in the retelling and Dudley DoRight (again, stay away from the Brendan Fraser debacle from 1999), a Canadian melodrama that usually featured someone tied to railroad tracks. The other major player was Peabody's Improbable History and Hollywood has just adapted it into the animated "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," finally getting one right I'm glad to say! He's a genius, a titan of business, a trusted advisor to the leaders of the free world, and a talented musician, but Mr. Peabody (voice of Ty Burrell) is also a dad. He's granted special dispensation by

the courts to adopt Sherman (Max Charles), a baby boy he finds abandoned on the street. As an expert on many subjects and a determined scientist, Peabody is constantly flustered by the antics of young Sherman, especially while they're under the critical eye of child advocate Ms. Grunion (voice of Allison Janney). It's the time the dog and boy spend together studying history, however, that really makes their relationship tick. Peabody, you see, has invented a wonderful device known as the WABAC. It's an apple-shaped time machine that lets them zip around to the high points in human history and experience firsthand such adventures as the French Revolution, the painting of the Mona Lisa, and the Greek invasion

of Troy using the Trojan Horse. The WABAC is a big secret, and obviously very dangerous, so Sherman gets in big trouble when he uses it to impress the cute bully, Penny (voice of Ariel Winter), that's been picking on him at school. During their impromptu trip to ancient Egypt, Penny winds up betrothed to King Tut and the noble Peabody must rescue her from certain doom. Their hijinks ultimately rip a hold in the spacetime continuum that results in a rehash of history that felt like it was lifted right out of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Peabody and his boy have to save the day again! There is so much to love about this movie that I have to winnow down the list. Burrell is an amazing

March 20, 2014

voice artist. His resume is chock full of this type of work, but Peabody is his biggest role to date outside of Modern Family where he plays patriarch Phil Dunphy. Just like in the original cartoon, the writing is so witty that Burrell is blessed with some great puns to share with the audience. One about Marie Antoinette had me in absolute stitches. The show even ended with a mustachioed street sweeper cleaning up the mess. Utterly charming! "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" runs 105 minutes which includes a short cartoon called Almost Home, featuring the voice talents of Steve Martin. The feature presentation is rated PG for some mild action and brief rude humor. I give this film three stars out of four.

A bowl of Lady Alice apples

Lady Alice apples Eastern Washington products bound for St. Louis area For The Edge

O

ne of the hottest new apples is arriving in grocery stores around the greater St. Louis area in next few weeks. Lady Alice brand apples are quickly becoming the most eagerly anticipated apple each winter. As regional varieties begin to disappear from store shelves, the Lady Alice arrives with peak flavor and texture. Discovered as a chance seedling in the orchards of Eastern Washington, over the past six years production of this apple has increased as its appeal with consumers has taken off. Lady Alice will be available February through May, or while supplies last at many major and independent grocery retailers in the area. “The Lady Alice apple is a welcome addition for consumers who love apples and are looking for something new in the late winter and spring. Its delicious sweet bite offers a hint of tartness that lingers on the palate,” said Suzanne Wolter, Rainier spokesperson. “We’ve been enjoying their exceptional flavor this past week and everyone has been commenting that this is the best flavored crop we have harvested to date!” The rarity of a chance seedling creating an apple that is

20

On the Edge of the Weekend

quickly becoming a national favorite is a story in itself. It was discovered quite by chance on a farm near Gleed, Washington in 1978 when a grower accidentally cut an apple tree with his farm equipment. A chance seedling grew from the base and over the next 25 years, steps were taken to preserve and propagate the distinctive characteristics of the Lady Alice. The Lady Alice brand apple is named after Alice Zirkle, the cofounder of Rainier Fruit Company in honor of her memory. What consumers really love is Lady Alice’s flavor and cooking qualities. The heirloom-like Lady Alice apple is similar to a fine wine – flavorful and complex. The apples are harvested in the fall, stored and sold to consumers at their flavor peak. They are characterized by pinkish red striped over a banana-yellow background and sweet, crisp, dense flesh with a hint of tartness. The density of the apple leaves those who eat them feeling satisfyingly filled after enjoying one. The versatile Lady Alice apple is an excellent choice for snacking, baking and cooking. The Lady Alice can also be used in a variety of cooking and baking recipes. Its distinctively sturdy flesh helps the apple retain its texture when heated at high temperatures. Just like fresh cherries, the Lady Alice apple has a short season, yielding a limited supply of this delectable fruit. "We at Rainier strive to grow only the highest quality fruit – the Lady Alice apple offers versatility, while maintaining a unique quality we have been committed to for more than a

century,” adds Wolter. The Lady Alice apple contributes to a healthy lifestyle and compliments a variety of recipes. According to the USDA, apples are among the top 20 foods with the highest antioxidant content per serving. Rich in antioxidants, apples may help boost weight loss and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
