People planner The Sheldon to present The 442s
The Sheldon presents The 442s, Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. The 442s are multi-instrumentalist Adam Maness, violinist Shawn Weil, cellist Bjorn Ranheim and bassist Sydney Rodway. Combining two members of the worldclass St. Louis Symphony and two of the St. Louis city’s finest jazz musicians, The 442s are a genre-defying acoustic quartet named for the modern standard tuning of 442 Hz. Brought together by the innovative and inspired compositions of Adam Maness, who plays piano, guitar, accordion, melodica and glockenspiel in the group, The 442s features Shawn Weil on violin, Bjorn Ranheim on cello and Sydney Rodway on bass. This unique collaboration, formed in the Spring of 2012, combines outstanding musicianship, group singing and inventive improvisation, all while breaking down barriers between jazz, classical, folk and pop music. The 442s were born of a
common musical curiosity and a search for new and exciting musical possibilities and collaborations. This search has taken them to venues and concert series throughout the Midwest, including Powell Symphony Hall and Jazz at the Bistro. The 442s have released three albums to date. Their 2014 self-titled debut album has been featured on over 100 radio stations across the country. Relay and Home for Christmas, both released in 2016, feature collaborations with celebrated musicians from across the musical spectrum. Tickets are $12 adult/$5 child, and are on sale through MetroTix at 314-5341111, through The Sheldon’s website at TheSheldon.org, or in person at The Fox Theatre Box Office, 534 N. Grand Blvd. For more information, call The Sheldon at 314533-9900 or visit TheSheldon.org.

The accompanying visual, which features Vance Joy delivering an emotional performance in a beautiful, stripped-back setting, was filmed by frequent collaborator Mimi Cave, who also directed videos for the album’s first single “Lay It On Me” and the recently released “We’re Going Home.” With still two weeks until the release of Nation of Two, the album has already amassed over 60 million global streams, accounted for by the four tracks Vance Joy has unveiled throughout the past few months. Female directors turning to television

By MEREDITH BLAKE Los Angeles Times In the 14 years that elapsed between her debut f e a t u re , t h e O s c a r- w i n n i n g “ M o n s t e r, ” a n d h e r blockbuster second film, “Wonder Woman,” Patty Jenkins kept her skills sharp by directing episodes of “The Killing,” “Entourage” and “Arrested Development.” Jenkins is hardly alone in following this path. Some of the most distinctive and acclaimed female filmmakers of the last 25 years — Jane Campion, Mary Harron, Allison Anders, Nicole Holofcener among them — have turned to television for opportunities not readily available in the feature film world. Writer-director Kimberly Peirce struck gold with her first feature, “Boys Don’t Cry,” whose lead actress, Hilary Swank, also won an Academy Award. But it took her nine years to make her follow-up, the Iraq war drama “Stop-Loss,” a commercial disappointment. “People would say to me, ‘Why don’t you make more movies?’ You should never ask a woman why she hasn’t made more movies, any more than you should ask a person of color why they’re not doing certain things that are inherently more difficult for people of color to do,” says Peirce. “What you need to ask is, ‘Why are these competent, brilliant people being stopped in their tracks?’ The systemic obstacles and the systemic discrimination against women are horrifying.” Having risen in New York’s indie film community, she was frustrated by studio meddling and the way that the best material and the best screenwriters inevitably went to male directors. “There was a subtle, kind of putting down of where women were,” she says. “If you did get onto a set with a halfway decent story, the level of interference was so crazy. It’d be like, ‘You sit down to dinner, and somebody takes your food away.’ In retrospect, the interference had solely to do with my gender.” Peirce also directed “Carrie,” a remake of the horror classic released in 2013, but has since focused on television, directing shows including “Six,” “I Love Dick,” “American Crime” and “Halt and Catch Fire.” She says the medium offers a chance to stay current with technology, work with different casts and crews, amass more on-set experience quickly — and even get paid for it, unlike in features, where directors often aren’t compensated during the protracted development process. After her debut picture, “Girlfight,” took the Sundance Film Festival by storm in 2000, Karyn Kusama directed two underperforming, femalec e n t e re d g e n re m o v i e s , “ Æ o n F l u x ” ( 2 0 0 5 ) a n d “Jennifer ’s Body” (2009), that were hampered by studio meddling. For female filmmakers,”the expectation is only that you hit three home runs in a row,” says Kusama. “Failure isn’t even quite perceived as failure for male filmmakers.

Movies Hoping for more from “A Wrinkle in Time” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge The Oscar fog finally clears this time of the year and so I gave a little cheer to see Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” on the release calendar for the new weekend. The book version had been published decades before I started elementary school, but I vividly and fondly recall having it read to my class when I was a student at N.O. Nelson just a while ago. It’s a story that thrives on the concepts of time and distance, but those forces are also affecting my memory of the greater narrative; for the life of me, I can’t honestly tell you if it was my fourth of fifth grade year. So, to start, my apologies to my teachers, Jeannie Brunworth and Kathy Gerber. You both did right by me. I am a well-adjusted adult, have mastered fractions, and will always love a good story. You both score at least partial credit today. It was a confusing book. Of course, I was new to “Young Adult” fiction, having made the circuitous leap from The Boxcar
Children and the Hardy Boys (and on the precocious verge of Michael Crichton with the coming worldwide publishing phenomenon of “Jurassic Park” in 199091). Disney, from their perch on top of the moviemaking world, has cleared up the confusion a bit, but this production makes me think that the source material may be weaker in a way that I wasn’t expecting to view all these years later. Thirteen yearold protagonist Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is a troubled and angry kid on the cusp of becoming an adult. Her grief stems from the disappearance of her scientist father (Chris Pine) four years prior to the beginning of the story. Losing him at a young age has left her with an inability to trust authority figures and a level of skepticism that is pretty smug even for a Millennial child. She loves her glum mother (Gugu MbathaRaw) and her prodigious brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), but schoolyard bullying and the constant coping agony brought on by her missing dad leave Meg yearning for more. And does she get it!
Much changes for her in a flash when she and Charles Wallace are visited by three kooky beings that offer her a chance to rescue her father from the clutches of a darkness that has preyed upon him because of his experiments using a ‘tesseract’ to move between great distances in a blink. The beings - whom I contend are witches, but shouldn’t use that term are the perky/bossy Ms. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), the riddlemaster Ms. Who (Mindy Kaling), and their powerful elder, Ms. Which (Oprah Winfrey). Joining on this quest is Meg’s schoolmate, Calvin O’Keefe (Levi Miller). Together, with the help of the wizened Happy Medium (Zach Galifianakis), they ‘tesser ’ to far off worlds in search of Dr. Murry and encounter The It, a malevolent being that seems to be thriving off of the dark forces we carry around with us like jealousy, fear, and anger. The It has many faces and is represented by a lackey named Red (Michael Pena) in a creepy cameo. There’s a lot to like about this iteration
of “A Wrinkle in Time”. There’s a positive message about family and faith, hallmarks of author Madeline L’Engle’s entire repertoire, and the girl power and diversity messages brought to the picture by its cast and director Ava DuVernay are both thoughtful and explicit. Unfortunately, the whole thing is also rather dull. The trio of celebrity actress, ahem, witches are used too sparingly and too heavily basted with glittery lipstick and brash eye shadow to be taken as true role models. Kaling, in particular, seems anchorless in her performance where the character speaks only in quotations attributed to other people. I was hoping for a better adaptation, frankly, and many comparisons are being made to one of Disney’s other recent live action/nonfranchise pictures, “Tomorrowland”. I thought that one was way better. “A Wrinkle in Time” runs 109 minutes and is rated PG for thematic elements and some peril. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.
Good cast can’t save “Gringo” By LINDSAY WALSH Associated Press The good news is David Oyelowo is a terrific comedic actor (who knew!). The bad news is that the vehicle for discovery, Nash Edgerton’s “Gringo ,” is a contrived action-comedy that is trying its hardest to shock and offend, but, you know, in a funny, cool B-movie way that involves someone’s toe getting cut off with wire clippers and Charlize Theron, a seductress in a corner suite, talking a lot about sex. Oyelowo plays Harold, a Nigerian immigrant and middle manager for a pharma company run by his friend Richard (Joel Edgerton). His bosses are mass producing a marijuana pill so that they’ll be ready to conquer the market when it’s legalized in the U.S., but unbeknownst to him they’re sustaining their business on illegal sales in Mexico facilitated by a local
drug lord (Carlos Corona). We know Harold’s life is sad because we’re introduced to him in the middle of a bitter Chicago winter. He takes his pup out in the freezing cold in the morning and then goes to meet with his accountant, who informs Harold that his wife, Bonnie (Thandie Newton) is digging them into massive debt with her costly and unsuccessful interior design business. When Harold suggests that perhaps Bonnie not rent out expensive office space while she’s still launching the business and has only one client, she scoffs and it’s the end of the discussion. Greedy, selfish wife? Emasculated provider husband who is also mistreated at work? A soulless set of bosses, one a vacuous bro, the other (Theron’s Elaine) who uses sex, dirty talk and unbuttoned silk blouses to close business deals, who are involved in a shady business arrangement in Mexico and are ready to send Harold packing the moment their secret merger goes through?
Sounds like a setup only a screenwriter (in this case, two, Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone) in need of a launching pad for a crazy, Cartel-adjacent Mexican adventure could dream up. The result is none of these characters resemble recognizable humans, or even compelling “types.” So, Elaine, Richard and Harold go off to Mexico to cut off the illegal arm of their business, which Harold knows nothing about. None of them speak Spanish, even Harold, who is supposed to be the main liaison there. Naturally, the drug lord they’re in business with, the Black Panther (no relation to T’Challa), is not ready to give up this weed pill supply and sets off to kidnap Harold. Every character we meet there, whether it’s the office manager with a half dozen kids, the sleazy hotel managers, the bartender, etc., is either connected to the cartels or ready to sign up to get a few extra
bucks. There’s also a subplot about a younger couple Miles (Harry Treadaway) and Sunny (Amanda Seyfried) who travel from LA to Mexico to steal one of these weed pills (Sunny is of course oblivious). But it never really pays off or connects in any meaningful way, other than the fact that they happen to run into Harold a lot. “Gringo” gets some life when Richard dispatches his brother Mitch (Sharlto Copley), a bearded ex-special ops guy, to save Harold. The two have a funny chemistry together, but it’s a little too brief and too late. There’s a lot of gun violence, casual racism, and hatefulness in general, especially toward women. Besides Bonnie’s excessive spending, the only other thing we learn about her is that she’s a cheater and she used to be “fat,” or 50 pounds heavier, which I’m not entirely sure would actually make Thandie Newton fat.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
Go ahead, pick your favorite young, villainvanquishing fantasy heroine. Meg Murry probably came first. Katniss Everdeen? She arrived in 2001. Hermione Granger? That was 1997. Elphaba, the green girl from “Wicked”? 2003. But Meg, the reluctant, bespectacled heroine of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic “A Wrinkle in Time,” has been with us, and on the shelves of middleschoolers, since 1962. Enter Ava DuVernay, tapped by Disney to put her own spin on this tale of self-discovery across the spacetime continuum, for the big — REALLY big — screen. Talk about pressure. And the talented “Selma” director does not shy away from the task of adapting the story to the 21st century. With the help of a terrifically diverse cast anchored by the sweet — but too sweet, here — newcomer Storm Reid, and A-listers like Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, DuVernay has made a film that is unabashedly — some might say relentlessly — of the moment. Hip-hop quotes, eating disorders, a “Hamilton” reference? Yup, yup, yup. It’s also all over the map, in every way possible. It’s visually gorgeous at times but then boring to behold at others, emotionally poignant at times but stunningly cloying at others. It’s also confusing (though to be fair, many might call the book confusing, too.) Mostly, it’s just a frustrating whole comprised of some pretty promising parts. RATED: rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America “for thematic elements and some peril.” RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Death of Stalin”
Just as history enshrines its heroes, it aggrandizes its villains. The most fearsome perpetrators of evil can become calcified in the horror of their atrocities. It becomes easy to imagine them as stern, foreboding figures who could have only earned their impunity through obsessive, bloodthirsty rigor. But of course, as Armando Iannucci’s “The Death of Stalin” illustrates, many of history’s monsters weren’t nearly as imposing as their reputations. T h e y w e re i d i o t s . T h e y w e re v u l g a r, u n c o u t h , hapless fools whose grip on power was as absurd as it was punishing. Their reigns were intensely cruel jokes. In “The Death of Stalin,” Iannucci, having already thoroughly satirized modern-day Washington on “Veep,” travels back to 1953 Soviet Union and the days following Stalin’s collapse. That leap may s e e m greater th an it is. Though the stakes are considerably higher in Stalinist Russia, the herd mentality of the power hungry to keep pace with political momentum is just as desperate. Here, a wrong move won’t relegate you to morning television, but it will send you to Siberia, or worse. (OK, so the stakes aren’t that different.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout, violence and some sexual references.” RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Have award shows lost their luster? By DAVID BAUDER AP Media Writer NEW YORK (AP) — After Nielsen’s brutal morning-after report cards for the Oscars and Grammys this winter, it’s worth asking whether television viewers are losing interest in watching the entertainment industry’s most prominent people celebrate themselves. The Academy Awards reached 26.5 million viewers, easily a record low for what is often the second mostwatched program of the year after the Super Bowl. A month earlier, Grammy viewership slipped below the 20 million mark, down 24 percent from 2017 and t h e m u s i c a w a rd s s h o w ’ s s m a l l e s t audience since 2009. Opening night of the Winter Olympics had a bigger crowd than both shows. That’s alarming news for networks that have considered major awards shows to be reliable, DVR-proof live events. Experts suggest the shows a re n ’ t i m m u n e t o t h e s a m e f o rc e s depressing viewership across all of television, with some specific factors that hurt the Oscars and Grammys this year. By the time the Oscars are done,
viewers who follow these things are probably exhausted from awards. Besides the Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys, the calendar is filled with the actors, producers and directors guild awards, the MTV Movie Awards, the Billboard music awards, the iHeart Radio music awards, the American M u s i c Aw a rd s , c o m p e t i n g c o u n t r y music organization awards... You get the idea. There’s little novel about celebrities standing on stage with a piece of hardware, thanking God, their spouses and agents. Big awards shows used to be one of the few chances to see celebrities outside of their work. But the entertainment news shows make that common-place, too, said Tom O’Neil, editor of Goldderby.com, a web site that dishes and predicts winners of big awards. “The true glut of media that we have out there nibbles at the viewership base of the awards shows,” O’Neil said. Te l e v i s i o n v i e w e r s h i p i n g e n e r a l i s g o i n g d o w n , w i t h m o re p e o p l e attracted to streaming services where t h e y c a n w a t c h p ro g r a m s w i t h o u t commercials and on their own schedules. Young people, in particular,
increasingly prefer watching highlights on their devices than shows that stretch past three or four hours. Even Super Bowl ratings have slipped the past few years. Networks have tried to fix those problems for their shows in general, not just awards shows, without much success. One retired network executive questions whether that trend could be reversed. “Short of full-frontal nudity, I don’t know what they could do,” he quipped. The bad performances of the Grammys and Oscars can’t be explained simply by those factors, however. The Golden Globes audience of 19 million in January was 5 percent down from 2017, a decrease roughly on par with what most programs see these days. The Emmy Awards audience of 11.38 million last fall was slightly up from the year before, Nielsen said. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on its 2016 taxes that it made $111 million in revenue from the Oscars, illustrating the economic importance of making sure it remains a big event. Some political conservatives have suggested that a backlash among viewers against liberal celebrities
espousing their views contributes to the slump. A Fox News web site headline i n J a n u a r y s a i d t h a t t h e “ Tr u m p bashing Golden Globes” ratings were down. That’s a factor hard to measure, however. One of the Globes’ biggest stories was an Oprah Winfrey speech some saw as a 2020 presidential campaignopener. Despite that, Globe ratings didn’t nearly go down as much as the Grammys or Oscars. The Oscars, meanwhile, celebrated m o v i e s l i k e “ T h e S h a p e o f Wa t e r ” that could hardly be considered blockbusters. Couple that with major awards competitions largely viewed as shoe-ins, primarily because of the movie awards circuit that predated the Academy Awards, and the night bordered on the predictable. “The average American doesn’t know who (acting award winners) Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell are,” O’Neil said. “That’s unfortunate.” A big test can come next year for the Oscars, with the movie “Black Panther” both an enormous success and a critical favorite. That could bring viewers back: the biggest Academy Award ratings ever were recorded the year “Titanic” won best picture.

Missouri River Music Fest planned
Superstars from classic rock’s glory days will come together for one night only at the 2018 Missouri River Music Fest at The Family Arena. T h e G u e s s W h o , A m b ro s i a , B i l l Champlin, Stephen Bishop and John Ford Coley headline the event scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2018. Tickets are on sale at https://www.metrotix.com/ events/detail/mrmf. The Guess Who is a group that’s connected with the masses throughout a exultant hit parade spanning fourteen Top 40 hits, including “These Eyes,” “Clap For the Wolfman,” “Hand Me Down World,” “No Time,” “Star Baby” and “Share the Land.” Add in fellow classics Luitjohan and double sided singles like their #1 rock anthem, “American Woman” and
“No Sugar Tonight,” plus “Laughing” and “Undun,” and the Canadian-bred stateside conquerors are amongst music’s most indelible treasures who are eternally etched within the very fabric of pop culture history. I n i t s b r i e f r e c o r d i n g h i s t o r y, Ambrosia garnered five Grammy Nominations, five Hit Singles (including “You Are The Only Woman,” “How Much I Feel,” and “Biggest Part Of Me”), Heavy FM Airplay and the admiration and respect of the musical community. All this was in addition to Sold Out concerts around the world. Today, the band is more alive and compelling than ever. With three of the original members intact plus the addition of guitar ace Doug Jackson on electric guitar and backing vocals, Mary Harris contributing amazing keyboards and vocals, and the powerful and contemporary lead vocals and acoustic guitar of Ken Stacey, Ambrosia is exploring new musical territory and continuing to wow life-long fans and new converts alike. Bill Champlin is best known for being a member of Chicago, which he joined in 1981 and remained a member of for 28 years. However, his career encompasses much more. The Sons of Champlin your home a band, formed in 1965 as “Give a great five-piece new look, for aseven great price!” and later expanded to members.
Luitjohan
The Sons recorded seven commercially released albums between 1968 and 1977 and gained a devoted fan base. Bill received two Grammy awards for his song writing and has released seven solo albums. He has recording credits on numerous albums by various artists that cover a 30-year period. Stephen Bishop released his first album, “Careless,” in 1976. The album featured the hits “Save It For a Rainy Day,” and “On and On.” He sang the hit theme, “It Might Be You,” from the movie, “Tootsie,” as well as writing and/ or singing for 13 other fi lms including, “Animal House,” and “Separate Lives” from “White Nights.” His songs have been performed by artists such as: Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Steve Perry, Stephanie Mills, Kenny Loggins, Johnny Mathis, Phoebe Snow, David Crosby, The Four Tops, Aswad and Pavarotti. There are songs you hear in your life that transport you to a certain time period or give you a special feeling. Songs like “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” “Nights Are Forever Without You” and “Love Is The Answer” have that kind of effect on people. Those songs and numerous others have made John Ford Coley a singing legend. He has spent decades touring, writing, recording, and producing. “Give your home a great new look, for a great price!”

Big Cedar Bed and Breakfast in Laurie is the Lake’s newest bed and breakfast.
B&Bs blossom at Lake of the Ozarks For The Edge Eight bed and breakfasts, each located in a different locale around the Lake, offer the opportunity for a peaceful, romantic and fun retreat at what readers of USA Today deemed the “Best Recreational Lake” in the nation. These comfortable homes-away-from home dot the Lake of the Ozarks area and offer a quiet respite for busy couples to relax and reconnect with each other. Wellappointed rooms with all the comforts of home, plus extra perks such as luxury linens, jacuzzis and hot tubs, stunning lakeside views and delicious made-from-scratch breakfasts make it easy to forget about everything else but the one you’re with. Sue Westenhaver, innkeeper at The Inn at Harbour Ridge Bed and Breakfast, is excited about the growth in the bed and breakfast industry at the Lake of the Ozarks. “The Lake has never been considered a ‘bed and breakfast destination,’ but that’s quickly changing with new B & Bs
opening in the community,” Westenhaver says. “We have four B & Bs that have been around for nearly 20 years but we’ve now doubled in number and it provides such a wealth of diversity and breathes new life into the Lakearea communities. Visitors can choose from on-the-water settings, country settings and village-like settings. And, each has its own distinct style and signature dishes that are lovingly prepared to make each stay memorable.” Westenhaver, who sits on the board of the Bed and Breakfast Inns of Missouri, says that the personal attention guests receive at a Lake-area bed and breakfast is second to none. “You get all these special touches and personalized service that’s unique to each B & B. It’s like having a personal concierge on-call 24 hours a day and people just love it.” Bass and Baskets Bed and Breakfast, 1117 Dogwood Road in Lake Ozark, features four themed guest rooms (Baskets and Blooms, Bed of Roses, Home Sweet Home and the Old Bass Lodge) and also doubles as the headquarters for Big Ed’s Guide Service. Bass and
Baskets is located lakeside and each room offers private decks overlooking the waters of Lake of the Ozarks, gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and other individual touches. Guests can expect a relaxing stay with a large breakfast and use of the private dock for swimming and fishing. Custom packages and add-ons are available to enhance any stay. And, with a professional Coast Guardcertified fishing guide living under the same roof, ample opportunities to get out on the water to catch impressive bass are easy to come by. To learn more, visit www. BassAndBasket.com. Nestled on 20 acres of scenic countryside just three miles north of the Camdenton square, Bent Tree Bed and Breakfast, 1491 Neongwah Bend Road in Camdenton, is a small working farm that brings guests closer to nature. Guests can choose from four themed guest rooms (Nautical, Tropical, Lavender and Mountain) and will enjoy a delicious and nutritious home-cooked breakfast each morning. Continued on Page 21

You can see student films, enjoy a senior art show, hear the USAF Band of Mid-America and listen to a radio café broadcast… all at Southwestern Illinois College this fall. The college’s arts series, called the Southwestern Illinois Creative Arts Syndicate, features a variety of events ranging from a presentation about Shakespeare in Love by Assistant Professor of Speech and Theatre Julie Willis Feb. 14 to the SWIC Jazz Festival Feb. 24 and the Film and Mass Communication programs’ open house April 24. “There is something for everyone whether you’re into chamber music, love art or want to find out more about filmmaking,” said Nicole Dutton, Schmidt Art Center curator. “We want our students and the community to enjoy the arts right here in the Metro East.” The spring 2018 SWICARTS calendar is below. The Rep announces the lineup for its 2018 Ignite! Festival of New Plays
Three nationally renowned playwrights will present public readings of their newest scripts at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’ Ignite! Festival of New Plays, running March 28 – April 7, 2018. Launched in 2012, the festival offers St. Louis theatre lovers the chance to see in-development scripts performed by professional actors, and then offer their feedback directly to the playwrights in postperformance talkbacks. This year ’s festival features: Hurricane Colleen by Tammy Ryan 7:30 p.m. March 28 & 29* Six months after their sister Colleen has died of cancer, two women rent a beach house in Melbourne, Florida to scatter her ashes. But when a tropical depression suddenly turns into a hurricane and strange encounters with wildlife occur, the sisters struggle to ride out the storms both outside and inside. Wind-Up Girl, book and lyrics by Sarah Hammond,
music by Will Aronson 7:30 p.m. April 3 Based on a true story, this imaginative new musical has Rene Descartes, the father of modern philosophy, attempting a very unusual project after being left bereft by the death of his daughter. A moving historical fantasy about the irrational machinations of the human heart. Nonsense & Beauty by Scott C. Sickles 7:30 p.m. April 7 In 1930, the writer E.M. Forster met and fell in love with a policeman 23 years his junior. Their relationship, very risky for its time, evolved into a 40-year love triangle that was both turbulent and unique. Based on a true story, Nonsense and Beauty captures the wit and wisdom of one of the last century’s great writers. All performances will take place at The Rep’s Emerson Studio Theatre (130 Edgar Road), except for the March 29* reading
of Hurricane Colleen, which will happen at UMSL at Grand Center (3651 Olive Street). Tickets will cost $10 for single performances or $25 to see all three readings. Those tickets will go on sale January 15. Notable Ignite! alumni include Dael Orlandersmith’s Until the Flood, which world premiered at The Rep in 2016 and is playing at theatres throughout the nation in 2018, The Invisible Hand by Ayad Akhtar, Gidion’s Knot by Johnna Adams and Soups, Stews and Casseroles: 1976 by Rebecca Gilman. Dining Delights Celebrate National Nutrition Month For The Edge March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This year ’s campaign encourages consumers to “Go Further with Food” in order to achieve optimal health benefits. Building a healthy breakfast, planning meals with a purpose and watching portion sizes are direct ways to get the most from the foods we eat. Other ways to incorporate this year’s theme include cutting back on food waste and better managing food resources at home, which can save both money and nutrients. The Basics Include a variety of healthy foods from each food group throughout the day. Fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and dairy are important for meals that provide nutrients and supply energy. Choose foods from at least three food groups at each meal for a balanced diet. “Dairy pairs well with any food group. You can round out any meal with a glass of fresh cold milk to get 9 essential nutrients, including calcium and protein. You’ll also help meet the goal of 3 servings of dairy per day,” states Erin McGraw, registered dietitian and Nutrition Educator for the St. Louis District Dairy Council. Be Proactive A weekly plan for meals can help save time and money when it comes to shopping and cooking. Buy only the amount of food that you can use, or freeze within a week. Plan ways
to use leftovers to stretch your dollar and prevent waste. If you have a half gallon of milk to be used, make a pot of creamy mac ‘n cheese. Whip up a breakfast banana split using left over yogurt and fresh fruit on hand. Add texture by topping it off with almonds, walnuts, shaved coconut or granola,” states McGraw. Pay Attention Keep your eye on portion sizes. Reading food labels and occasionally getting out the measuring cups can help to stay on track with servings. “A serving of dairy is one cup of milk or yogurt, or 1 ½ ounces of cheese,” notes McGraw. Check out the website myplate.gov for information on food groups, calorie levels, portion sizes and healthy eating tips. Whether cooking for one or for a large family, small changes can help you “Go Further with Food”. Putting these simple tips into action during National Nutrition Month will help create habits that have lifelong health benefits. For more information on dairy’s benefits, visit www. stldairycouncil.org or contact Erin McGraw at (314) 835-9668 or emcgraw@stldairycouncil. org. Follow us on Facebook at STLDairyCouncil. Dining Delights The Edge's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Taj Indian Cuisine 4 Club Centre Ct. Edwardsville If you’re looking to expand your mind and try out some ethnic food, this is a pretty good testing ground. The daily buffet gives you a smorgasbord of Indian cuisine to try out. The tandoori chicken is always a go-to item and make sure to grab some Naan bread. If you haven’t had goat this is your chance. There are several goat dishes on the buffet, or order off the menu. Make sure to ask your server about spice levels just to be on the safe side. Try some Indian beers on your trip, too. Charleville Brewing Company & Tavern 2101 Chouteau Ave. St. Louis Craft beer lovers who are looking for some good brews to go with some good grub will love this place. It features a big bar with plenty on tap and a spacious area for groups to visit for dinner. If you’re having a few beers and want something a little heavy to go with it, check out the wake and bake burger. It’s a beef patty topped with smoked pork belly, a sunny side up egg and hollandaise aioli on a brioche bun and accompanied with French fries. For beer lovers, order the box of chocolates. It’s a Belgian style quadruple ale that tastes like a chocolate candy bar. Unfortunately it’s a seasonal beer, so not always available, but there’s plenty of other stuff to choose from. Capitalist Pig 2727 S. 12th St. Soulard Have you ever wander what it would be like to eat inside a jail cell? Well this place will give you that opportunity, only you get to leave when you’re done
and you don’t have to wear an orange jump suit. This barbecue joint is housed in an old jail and offers a pretty neat experience. The brisket is good stuff and you definitely can’t go wrong with the cornbread. The 10-ounce smoked brisket and eggs is really good off of the Sunday brunch menu. It offers brisket with a chili hollandaise sauce a pair of poached eggs, some yummy fried potatoes and smoked balsamic onions with a corn bread muffin to boot. They are only open during the day Wednesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so make sure to get there early. Edison’s Entertainment Complex 2477 S. State Rt. 157 Edwardsville Sure you probably know this place for its bowling alley, arcade and laser tag arena, but if you don’t know it for its food you’re definitely missing out. The creative fare on the menu is surprising. Get your mitts on a menu and you’ll see plenty to choose from. I’ll vouch for the fantastic street tacos. The strawberry horseradish shrimp taco, lobster taco and crunchy crawfish taco are especially scrumptious. There’s plenty more, too. Their take on the atomic turd with bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers with apple cream cheese are phenomenal. The grilled cheesiest burger with the buns replaced with grilled cheese sandwiches is just one of the twisted Frankenstein monster creations on the menu. If you’re brave enough ask about the Big Ed Challenge. It provides gluttony at its best. Great Rivers Tap & Grill 3559-B College Ave. Alton This hidden treasure inside the Best Western Premier Hotel is well worth a visit. There is plenty of seating and plenty of good grub in this restaurant in the lobby of the hotel. You have to get the potato and cheddar pierogis off of the appetizer menu. Finding a place that makes this classic Polish delicacy isn’t easy, and this joint does them up
right. The savory potato dumplings are served with bacon, onions and sour cream. It also features some pretty cool burgers and sandwiches, like the basin burger with a jumbo grilled shrimp pinned to the bun for an added bonus. Also featuring things like smoked salmon deviled eggs, shrimp etouffee and espresso rubbed strip steak how can you go wrong? Frank’s Restaurant 102 E. Center Dr. Alton A new location doesn’t change anything for this classic diner with ultra cheap prices. It’s in its third spot in the Riverbend, but continues to be as popular as ever. The lineup of skillets on the breakfast menu are all top notch. It’s also a great place to grab a cheap steak with a great taste. The sirloin and shrimp is always a good order. The fat daddy chicken strips are kind of a laymen order, but very good. And did I mention it’s cheap? Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust St. St. Louis This is a great place to visit for good brews and good food. If you’re in to excellent craft beers then they’ll have plenty for you. The spacious brewery and restaurant gives you plenty of room to take a big group of friends for a night out. The old building is pretty cool, too. It was featured in the Kurt Russell flick “Escape from New York” back in the day. As for the food, the egg and chorizo sandwich is top notch and served on a ciabatta bun so it soaks up all the mess from the fried egg. It provides a nice spice kick. The meatloaf muffin is a must try, featuring a bacon-wrapped meatloaf and fried egg on an English muffin. Also check out the bag of pretzels on the snack portion of the menu. The Bavarian-style pretzels are served with a white cheddar cheese sauce that you will be tempted to guzzle straight from the container.
Boogie’s Restaurant & Bar 2082 Vadalabene Dr. Maryville If chicken wings are your thing then you need to check this place out. Listed on the menu as “Boogie’s Famous Chicken Wings,” they are pretty delicious. I like the garlic parmesan version. They aren’t overly greasy and have the right level of garlic flavor to them. Get them double dipped. The fried chicken here is GBD (golden, brown and delicious) and worth a try. Also, don’t miss out on the baked sweet potato as a side. The butter and brown sugar turn it into more of a dessert. There are also daily specials to check out. Steel City Smokehouse 9 American Village Granite City You will find this place in the front portion of Ravanelli’s in Granite City. This barbecue joint is pretty scrumptious. It’s small for eating in, but well worth a visit. Head to the assembly line counter and pick out your order to the server behind the guards. The brisket is really good, as is the peppered turkey. Lather it up with the chipotle blueberry sauce, you can’t go wrong with it. The sides are top notch too, most notably the cheesy hashbrowns and the macaroni and cheese. Wise Guys Gyros and Italian Beef 3200 Godfrey Rd. Godfrey This is a pretty new joint in Godfrey. The menu is comprised of Chicago-style classics like gyros, Italian beef and hot dogs. The gyro meat is extremely tender and they put a lot of twists on it, like the barbecue gyro with barbecue sauce, onion and tomato. Of course there is the Italian sausage sandwich which mixes those Chicago classics of Italian beef and a juicy Italian sausage link. You can’t go wrong with that. The pizza puff is really good, with beef, mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce stuffed inside a flaky pastry shell. It’s in an old fast food restaurant, so nothing fancy aesthetically, but still worth a trip.

Downtown grocery store digs into competition By PATT JOHNSON Des Moines Register DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hy-Vee Inc.’s downtown Des Moines grocery store celebrated its first anniversary on Feb. 28, leaving a mix of happy customers and disgruntled nearby restaurant owners who say the store’s prepared food options are siphoning away business. “It has hurt us pretty good,” said Mike Rink, owner of the Pita Pit across the street from the Fourth + Court Hy-Vee. He expects to close the restaurant in the coming weeks because of a drop in business. “We didn’t realize the Hy-Vee would be half food court and one-fourth groceries,” he said. St. Louis;Ernst & Cooling;E36720;4.8733x6 (17Fa)they too Other Heating restaurant owners said
are struggling. An increase in the number of downtown restaurants may account for part of the downturn in sales, but they said Hy-Vee’s quick-serve food stations and full-service restaurant have eaten into lunch sales since the store opened a year ago. Meanwhile, Hy-Vee is “exceeding original expectations” in all areas, from the food court to grocery sales, said Jen Kopriva, Hy-Vee district vice president. The company’s pilot project was a muchawaited addition to Des Moines’ growing downtown. An increasing number of residential units as well as a substantial employee base fueled the need for a downtown grocery store. With its concrete floors, exposed ceilings, juice bar, beer growler filling station and custom soda station, Hy-Vee was looking

to create a hip, urban vibe. But the star of the show proved to be the prepared food offerings, which include Nori Sushi, The Hibachi Asian Grill, Dia Pida Italian Street Food, Cocina Mexicana, the made-to-order salad bar and Long Island Deli. When it launched, the 36,000-squarefoot “grocerant” included seating for about 110 on tall community tables. Several months in, Kopriva said 60 more seats were added because of the high demand. To accommodate the expansion, Hy-Vee moved the international foods to other aisles and shifted bulk items. But the popularity of the store’s prepared food offerings among downtown workers and dwellers has taken a toll on nearby restaurants. Jeff Bruning, co-owner of Full Court Press, said that while there are other factors
contributing to the struggles of downtown restaurants, “Hy-Vee coming downtown didn’t help.” “The facts are the facts. There are places that are teetering on the edge of going out of business,” he said. Profits at his downtown restaurants — Fong’s, Hessen Haus and Royal Mile — are down significantly, the Des Moines Register reported . He’s looking at making some changes at Hessen Haus, which is struggling the most, to draw more business and make it more of a destination spot. But there’s always the possibility of closing it. “We didn’t have a bad year there until Hy-Vee came,” he said. Hy-Vee is downtown’s third food court, said Bruning, referring to Local Bites in the Partnership Building and the food court at Kaleidoscope at the Hub.
