People Pop art greets Lambert travelers For the Intelligencer It’s a mix of pop culture, wallpaper and a whole new audience at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). In partnership with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Lambert Art and Culture Program announces the installation of the renowned German artist Thomas Bayrle’s Chrysler Tapete. The work, made up of 66 individual panels of wallpaper mounted directly to the wall in a grid pattern, will be on view in Terminal 2 (E Gates) now through March 17, 2019. Bayrle’s Chrysler Tapete (1970) is one of a number of wallpaper works the artist has created since the late ’60s. A key figure in European Pop Art, Bayrle has worked in painting, sculpture, fashion, and graphic design since the mid1960s. Bayrle’s work explores an icon of mobility. He selects a vintage Chrysler from an era of economic largesse when Detroit was the automotive capital of the world, mass producing these powerful machines that served as symbols of status and freedom, as well as emblems of the postwar American character re c o g n i z e d t h ro u g h o u t t h e world. The repetition of the figure alludes to the Chrysler as product, built on assembly lines to fulfill the dreams of a wide section of the population, yet also a commodity that reflects a growing homogeneity in society as a whole, not unlike the notorious Campbell’s soup cans of Andy Warhol. Tapete translates as “tapestry,” suggesting a visual work with a tactile, physical presence, and also references Bayrle’s use of wallpaper in many of his works. The work is also representative of the artist’s practice of frenzied patterning, collapsing

A vintage Chrysler, multiplied, now greets passengers in Terminal 2. foreground and background in the Op art tradition. Placed as it is in a corridor for travelers at the Airport (between gates E33 and E34), Bayrle has managed a fascinating reversal of perspective: these static car images appear as moving forms, filmic frames from the point of view of a world in motion. Thomas Bayrle (b. 1937, Berlin) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions around the world including, in 2017, at the Cité Internationale de la Papisserie, Aubusson, France; Austrian Museum of Applied Arts
/ Contemporary Art, Vienna; and in 2016, Artissima, Torino, Italy; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Lenbachhaus, Munich; Gavin Brown’s enterprise, New York; and the Museum Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden, Germany. Other solo exhibitions include the Meseu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2009), and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2009). Bayrle has participated in such significant group exhibitions as documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012), Making Worlds, La B i e n n a l e d i Ve n e z i a , 5 3 rd International Art Exhibition, Arsenale Venice (2009), and
the Fourth Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art: Von Mäusen un Menschen / Of Mice and Men, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin Germany (2006). The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis was chosen to exhibit Chrysler Tapete in the Lambert Art & Culture Program through the Airport’s seven-member Airport Art Advisory Committee. Current members are Lisa Cakmak, Associate Curator of Ancient Art at Saint Louis Art Museum; Ellen Gale, Executive Director Clayton Chamber of Commerce; Shelley Hagan, Wells Fargo Curator Corporate Art; Leslie Markle,
Curator of Public Art, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum; Kiku Obata, Founding Principal of Kiku Obata & Co.; Roseann Weiss, consultant with ART+; and Carlos Zamora, Creative Director at Express Scripts. The exhibit is part of the temporary exhibitions program which receives support from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis. The mission of the Lambert Art and Culture Program is to create a visually outstanding impression of St. Louis Lambert International Airport, generate community pride, and ensure that art at STL continues to complement and build upon the airport’s rich visual legacy. The program aims to highlight the St. Louis region’s unique art and culture, while also showcasing national and international works, focusing on both visual and performing arts. Currently, there are 29 works of art (temporary, permanent or on-loan) on exhibit at the Airport. For more information, visit www. artoftravelstl.com. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) presents, supports, and celebrates the art of our time. It is the premier museum in St. Louis dedicated to contemporary art. Focused on a dynamic array of changing exhibitions, CAM provides a thought-provoking p ro g r a m t h a t re f l e c t s a n d contributes to the global cultural landscape. People Lincoln Museum to celebrate Illinois’ four presidents For The Edge The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will celebrate the Illinois bicentennial with a special exhibit exploring the lives and accomplishments of the four U.S. presidents who called Illinois home. “From Illinois to the White House: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama” opens Friday, March 23, and runs for the rest of the year. It will examine the connections of those four p re s i d e n t s t o I l l i n o i s , t h e i r achievements as politicians and communicators, and the first ladies who helped them succeed. Visitors can see rare artifacts g a t h e re d f ro m i n s t i t u t i o n s across the country, including: • the table where Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War • t h e n o t e c a rd s R o n a l d R e a g a n u s e d i n h i s “ Te a r Down This Wall” speech • the Grammy that Barack Obama won for the audio-book version of “Dreams from My Father” • the Bible on which Grant’s head rested after his death • a love letter from Reagan to his wife Nancy • Obama’s notes from his “Bloody Sunday” speech in Selma And, of course, the Lincoln Presidential Library will display fascinating Lincoln items such as the last axe he ever used, his briefcase and his ink well and pen. “This nation would be much different today without

perfect time for people to get to know these fascinating leaders.” “From Illinois to the White House” is presented with the generous support of PNC Bank and the John Ullrich Foundation. Visitors get to see unfamiliar sides of the presidents. They’ll
learn about Grant being so down on his luck that he had to pawn his watch and about Lincoln using his wrestling skills to win respect in a new community. They’ll see Obama about to start his first job as a lawyer and Reagan as a boy moving from town to town. Visitors also get the chance to answer presidential trivia questions or pose for pictures behind a presidential lectern as they deliver the Gettysburg Address from a teleprompter. The exhibit includes the state’s very first constitution, on loan from the Illinois State Archives. “The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is helping with many Bicentennial initiatives, but this exhibit is the library’s biggest and most important contribution,” said Stuart Layne, Executive Director - G o v e r n o r ’ s O ff i c e o f t h e Bicentennial. “‘From Illinois to the White House’ will be the preeminent exhibit of the state’s Bicentennial Celebration.” The exhibit is presented in the ALPLM’s Illinois Gallery, a space dedicated to rotating exhibits on state history. There will be no extra fee to see “From Illinois to the White House: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama.” It is provided as part of regular admission to the Lincoln museum (212 N. 6th Street, Springfield). It will be accompanied by s p e c i a l p ro g r a m m i n g , s u c h as presentations on Reagan’s near-assassination and on the first ladies. Teachers can use the exhibit to help students
learn history by choosing from three different lesson plans or attending a special workshop. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. The museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative storytelling techniques to educate visitors. It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history. For more information, visit www.presidentlincoln.illinois. gov or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “From Illinois to the White House: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama” is part of the state’s official bicentennial celebration. On Dec. 3, 1818, Illinois became the 21st state in the union. The Illinois Bicentennial is a yearlong celebration of what has been BORN, BUILT & GROWN in the state and a reminder of wh y we are #IllinoisProud. People planner State Fair music lineup begins to take shape
Ag Director Raymond Poe and State Fair Manager Luke Sailer are proud to welcome rock legends Foreignerand Joan Jett & the Blackhearts to the Illinois Lottery Grandstand stage on Sunday, August 12 at 2018 Illinois State Fair. Foreigner is among the top 40 best-selling music artists of all time, according to Business Insider magazine. The group is universally known as one of the most popular acts in the rock world with a playlist that continues to sell out tours and albums. While the band has been around for more than 40 years, a younger generation is exposed to the band’s music through popular films and television shows such as, “Rock of Ages,” “Orange Is The New Black,” “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and “Stranger Things.” Foreigner is best known for anthems such as, “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold As Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and “Waiting for a Girl Like You.” Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard- rocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” Her independent record label, Blackheart, was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands. As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, as well as the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece, GI. Jett’s music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. Jett and the Blackhearts released their latest record, ‘Unvarnished,’ in 2013 and continue touring the globe with headline shows alongside fellow rock icons like The Who, Green Day and the Foo Fighters. Additionally, Jett has acted and appeared in movies & television, including the film Light Of Day. Ticket prices have been announced for the already announced 2018 Grandstand concerts. Skin cancer can occur anywhere on the body, but it is most common in skin that has been exposed to sunlight, such as the face, neck, hands and arms. The earlier skin cancer is found, the better the outcome. If you’re concerned about skin cancer, particularly on your face and hands, call for an appointment for a free skin cancer screening with Dr. Noor Ahmed. Noor Ahmed, MD, Plastic Surgeon, will examine suspicious areas on the face, hands or other exposed areas. This is not a full body screening. Space is limited so call early.

The Rep to present “Born Yesterday”
With its lively patter, sharp satire and empowered female lead, Born Yesterday is a classic comedy that continues to surprise and entertain. Since its Broadway debut in 1946, Garson Kanin’s sendup of political gamesmanship has seen multiple prominent film and stage adaptations, including a 1995 production at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The Rep will produce the show once again this spring, running from March 14 to April 8. Pamela Hunt directs. Junkyard tycoon Harry Brock swaggers into Washington, D.C., determined to buy a senator or two. The monkey wrench in his schemes is Billie Dawn, his seemingly dimwitted ex-showgirl girlfriend. But when Brock hires a reporter to tutor Billie, she rapidly comes into her own as a force to be reckoned with. This sharp and snappy comedy hilariously skewers Beltway corruption. Ruth Pferdehirt (One Man, Two Guvnors, 2014) returns to The Rep as the irrepressible Billie Dawn. Andy Prosky (who appeared with Pferdehirt in 2014’s Noises Off) brings plenty of attitude as Harry Brock. Aaron Bartz makes his Rep debut as reporter Paul Verrall. Rounding out the supporting cast are Ted Deasy (Evie’s Waltz, 2008), Kurt Zischke (All the Way, 2015), Gina Daniels, Randy Donaldson (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 1992), Tom Wethington and Michelle Hand (Sense and Sensibility, 2013). Tickets to The Rep’s production of Born Yesterday are currently on sale and can be purchased online at repstl. org, by calling the Box Office at 314-968-4925 or visiting the Loretto-Hilton Center at 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University). Ticket prices range from $18.50 to $89. Show times are Tuesdays, selected Wednesdays and selected Sundays at 7 p.m.; Thursdays, Fridays and selected Saturdays at 8 p.m. Matinee performances are selected Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m., Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

$ .99 THE ART OF THE BUTCHER At Goshen Butcher Shop we believe in the Art of the Butcher – the craft of carving for quality, for flavor, not mass yield like a supermarket. We cut meats the way you want them: the perfect steak, cured and smoked bacon sliced to size. If you are looking for a hard to find cut, our butchers have been serving discriminating customers since 1947. It’s hard to find a cut they can’t do. Experience is important. Farm to Table communities are not only bringing back small shop and farm economics, they are restoring freshness and flavor to food. They are bringing back the need for master butchers–experts who know where the animals were raised, what they were fed, and how their cut will affect cooking and flavor.

“A Wrinkle in Time”
March 29, 2018
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
Go ahead, pick your favorite young, villainvanquishing fantasy heroine. Meg Murry probably came first. Katniss Everdeen? She arrived in 2001. Hermione Granger? That was 1997. Elphaba, the green girl from “Wicked”? 2003. But Meg, the reluctant, bespectacled heroine of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic “A Wrinkle in Time,” has been with us, and on the shelves of middleschoolers, since 1962. Enter Ava DuVernay, tapped by Disney to put her own spin on this tale of self-discovery across the spacetime continuum, for the big — REALLY big — screen. Talk about pressure. And the talented “Selma” director does not shy away from the task of adapting the story to the 21st century. With the help of a terrifically diverse cast anchored by the sweet — but too sweet, here — newcomer Storm Reid, and A-listers like Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, DuVernay has made a film that is unabashedly — some might say relentlessly — of the moment. Hip-hop quotes, eating disorders, a “Hamilton” reference? Yup, yup, yup. It’s also all over the map, in every way possible. It’s visually gorgeous at times but then boring to behold at others, emotionally poignant at times but stunningly cloying at others. It’s also confusing (though to be fair, many might call the book confusing, too.) Mostly, it’s just a frustrating whole comprised of some pretty promising parts. RATED: rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America “for thematic elements and some peril.” RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Love, Simon”
Some things are universal about being a teenager: The budding sexuality and sense of identity, the dramatic emotions, the profound need for acceptance and confusing inklings of first love. Countless movies (and books and songs and TV shows) plumb the agony and elation of teen romance, but “Love, Simon” brings fresh perspective to the genre by focusing on an experience unseen in coming-of-age tales: What high-school first love might be like if you’re gay. This film treats 17-year-old Simon Spier ’s quest for love and self-acceptance with the tender, timeless, Hollywood touch of John Hughes: It’s a classic story of a first crush made groundbreaking by centering on a closeted gay kid. Nick Robinson is Simon, a shaggy-haired high-school senior who describes his life as “totally normal.” He has a loving family and the same clutch group of friends for years. Simon is gay — he’s known ever since a recurring adolescent dream about Daniel Radcliffe — but has kept his sexuality a secret from everyone. He finally finds an outlet after an anonymous post on the school’s online gossip forum. A student calling himself Blue confesses that he’s gay but hasn’t told anyone, and Simon writes to him, using a pseudonym. They begin an anonymous pen-pal friendship that turns into a deep connection, and Simon starts fantasizing about Blue’s real identity. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic elements, sexual references, language and teen partying.” RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Tomb Raider”
In “Tomb Raider,” which has elements of “Indiana Jones,” ‘’Batman” and even “Tron: Legacy,” but with an angsty young woman at the center instead of an angsty young man, Alicia Vikander takes a lot of beatings. She is punched in the face, and in the stomach, she is thrown against rocks and sent careening through a forest, she is impaled, hit by a car, left in an impossible one-handed dead hang at least four times, and she is choked, really choked, by both men and women alike. And she pulls it off! The movie itself is another, more complicated, story, but this video game adaption is better than most with set pieces that are both fun and ridiculous (like a high-stakes escape room) that actually seem to approximate the experience of playing a video game. After two pretty lousy attempts, and a lot of terrible video game adaptations on the way, Hollywood has resurrected “Tomb Raider,” and plucked the most recent supporting actress Oscar winner production could get their hands on. And like Angelina Jolie before her, Vikander has, exactly two years after her Academy Award win for an emotional drama, stepped into Lara Croft’s combat boots and decided to raid some tombs. Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”), Lara is introduced getting her butt kicked in a boxing ring. The gym membership that gives her access to these low-rent Rockyesque facilities is one she can’t afford to pay. She is scrappy and barely getting by on her bike courier service paycheck. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of violence and action, and for some language.” RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Movies Vikander revitalizes “Tomb Raider” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge If filmmakers are intent on re-launching the “Tomb Raider” film series - and my ticket stub clearly attests that they are - then how do we justify a central female character who has for the twenty-two years since her inception been a harbinger of overly-sexualized pop culture hype? Can Lara Croft fit into our post-”Wonder Woman”, postHarvey Weinstein Era of Good (Feminist) Feelings? Of course she can. Women can do anything men can do and at least one thing they can’t, though motherhood has no bearing in the new film. What I find to be the case with this movie is that it graphically violent, to a respectful and guarded degree because it’s largely violent toward its woman protagonist. Thankfully, there’s barely a hint of misogyny behind it. I wanted “Tomb Raider” to be good, of course, but for more reasons that my admission fee. I wanted it to be a carefree
and adventuresome action movie, one of my favorite kinds. It needed to be of sufficient caliber to review for you this week and it had to redeem the stalled forward progress of its young star, Alicia Vikander. I’ll admit a small crush on the Swedish actress, but you’d be hard to find anyone who wouldn’t after her great performances in the superb “Ex Machina” and her Oscar-winning, star-making turn in “The Danish Girl”. She looked amazing in her swinging costumes from “The Man From U.N.C.L.E”. Her last few pictures, however, have left me craving better, more expansive roles. “The Light Between Oceans” was fine, but boring, and last year’s “Tulip Fever” was a total mess. Her Lara Croft is on-point, best described as the 2013 video game version of the character, and the good basis for a new franchise foundation. To be sure, as befits my fastidious nature, I also re-watched Angelina Jolie’s 2001 version to see if it holds up (it doesn’t). Vikander’s Lara is living a meager life of self-imposed poverty and punishment.
She’s sinking all of the anguish over her father ’s (Dominic West) death into avoiding the billions of estate-imbued privilege that he’s left her in favor of carving out a living delivering food on her bike in London. She boxes and gets her butt kicked routinely in the ring. When she can no longer avoid the topic, she comes in from the cold and asserts her rights at the behest of her former guardian (Kristin Scott Thomas, icy in two scenes). Her father’s will leads Lara on a treasure hunt through hidden clues, mysterious objectives, and meaningful bequests from the beyond. Before we know it, “Tomb Raider” is starting to look like a “National Treasure” sequel. Landing in Japan, Lara meets Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), a ship’s captain willing to take her to an uncharted island where something she desperately needs to recover resides. Lara and Lu run afoul of a mercenary named Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins) who operates as the point person for a shadowy conspiracy that exists only to give a reason to the
plot. He puts Lara through her paces to help him find the lost MacGuffin, something consistently done better in the “Indiana Jones” films. During the period of time when Lara flees Vogel and finds herself victim of river cataracts, parachuting fails, rock slides, hallucinations, and being repeatedly punched in the face, the action sings. Where I liked this “Tomb Raider” best was the knowing way in which it constructs a close-ended story while still doing a remarkable job of setting up the inevitable sequel(s). The ending feels like a cliffhanger, but not nearly so much as the frequent number of times Lara Croft, you know, hangs from actual cliffs. Nick Frost has an extended cameo that invariably plays as the film’s comic relief, but his leading lady is still the best reason to check this one out. “Tomb Raider” runs 118 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and for some language. I give this film two stars out of four.
“Love, Simon” a fresh take on first love By SANDY COHENz Associated Press Some things are universal about being a teenager: The budding sexuality and sense of identity, the dramatic emotions, the profound need for acceptance and confusing inklings of first love. Countless movies (and books and songs and TV shows) plumb the agony and elation of teen romance, but “Love, Simon” brings fresh perspective to the genre by focusing on an experience unseen in coming-of-age tales: What high-school first love might be like if you’re gay. This film treats 17-year-old Simon Spier’s quest for love and self-acceptance with the tender, timeless, Hollywood touch of John Hughes: It’s a classic story of a first crush made groundbreaking by centering on a closeted gay kid. Nick Robinson is Simon, a shaggyhaired high-school senior who describes his life as “totally normal.” He has a
loving family and the same clutch group of friends for years. He keeps this all this from his friends, who are drawn in classic Hughes tradition: There’s awkward, self-conscious Leah (“13 Reasons Why” star Katherine Langford), who’s been crushing on Simon since they were kids; Abby (Alexandra Shipp), the transfer student and hottest girl in school; and Nick (Jorge Lendeborg, Jr.), a nice-guy athlete who serves as Simon’s heterosexual foil. All the other “Grease” and “Sixteen
Candles” archetypes are here, too: The bullies, jocks and popular kids, the wacky administrator (played oddly over-the-top by Tony Hale), and the no-nonsense drama teacher (Natasha Rothwell, as much of a hilarious standout here as she is on HBO’s “Insecure.”) Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel play Simon’s dreamy, slightly farfetched parents. Simon’s life starts to unravel when the school’s class clown, Martin (Logan Miller), finds his secret emails. Martin threatens to expose the exchange — and Simon’s gay status — unless Simon agrees to set Martin up on a date with Abby. As with any story set in the emotional minefield of high school — especially in the era of social media — dramatic social chaos ensues for everyone. And it rings painfully true whether you were the Leah, Abby, Nick, Martin or Simon of your teenage group. The heart of “Love, Simon” lies in the authenticity of its characters, which were
born in psychologist-turned-author Becky Albertalli’s debut novel, adapted by “This Is Us” screenwriters Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, and brought lovingly to the screen by director Greg Berlanti. A veteran writer and producer of such teen fare as TV’s “Riverdale,” ‘’Dawson’s Creek,” ‘’Supergirl” and “The Flash,” Berlanti knows this world intimately, both personally and professionally. He says he was “a closeted gay high-schooler” himself and celebrates “Love, Simon” as the first mainstream Hollywood coming-of-age film with a gay lead. The success of “Black Panther” and the momentum behind #MeToo are propelled by the idea that representation matters, and “Love, Simon” is part of that conversation. Movie fans who aren’t white and straight have long projected themselves onto the big-screen stories of those who are. But we all want to see our experiences validated, to have our stories deemed significant, to feel that we are not alone and that others can identify with.

Dining Delights Guerrilla Street Food adds location For The Edge Guerrilla Street Food announces the opening of the modern Filipino-American food truck and restaurant’s third location at 6120 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis. Located adjacent to The Pageant and Delmar Hall on the east side of The Loop, Guerrilla Street Food has opened with almost twenty new, creative dishes on the menu as well as a sleek, updated design. Co-owners Brian Hardesty and Joel Crespo explain their excitement around this Delmar location. “Opening in The Loop has always been a plan for us so we’re excited to see it all coming to fruition. This location is really the evolution of the brand, from design to the menu.” In addition to Guerrilla Street Food’s “Old School” dishes like Chicken Adobo and the signature Flying Pig, the menu features almost twenty new items from Chef Brian Hardesty and Delmar ’s Executive Chef Heidi Hamamura. The new offerings include additions to the Merienda (or starters) such as: Salted Duck Egg Toast with Union Loafers bread, duck yolk spread, duck egg whites, tomato, red onion, garlic, fish sauce and kumquat; two new lumpia offerings like Lumpia Shanghai with ground pork, onion, garlic, carrot, rolled and fried with a black garlic vinaigrette; Siopao, a steamed bun filled with pork, house oyster sauce, garlic, serrano chile and ginger; and more. The “New School” dishes feature Hardesty/ Hamamura’s collaborative entrées such as the Hamanado with marinated and braised local pork belly, caramelized pineapple, tart cherry relish and crushed chicharrón, served with local steamed jasmine rice, to more adventurous eats like the Dinuguan, a pork blood stew with pork shoulder, pork belly, garlic and chiles, served with local jasmine rice and fresh pandan-scented puto. Hardesty explains, “There are more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, so you’ll see variations of the same dish as you travel around the different regions. We want to embrace that same philosophy at our restaurants–each
For The Edge
Guerrilla Street Food’s Delmar location. will have their own dishes and flavor based on where the restaurant is located. This menu showcases the vibrancy and diversity of The Loop.” Hardesty and Crespo, along with Hardesty’s brother, Greg, who designed the concept’s black-and-gold logo with crossed fork and knife, created the modernized look for the 2,100-squarefoot restaurant. Warm gray walls offer a neutral canvas for unique Filipino art throughout the restaurant. The team commissioned San Francisco-based artist, Kristian Kabuay, to create a mural for the space, featuring the Filipino ancient writing system, Baybayin. In addition,
tattoo artist, Aleks Figueroa of Dream Jungle Tattoo in Long Beach, CA, who specializes in the art of traditional Filipino tribal tattoos, shared drawings of his work to adorn the restaurant’s tabletops. Crespo says, “It is important for us to emulate the modernization of Filipino culture throughout our restaurant, not only with our food, but also the décor. Baybayin is a lost language for the Filipino culture, and we hope that the mural and tabletops spark a conversation with our guests about the traditions.” Additional design features for the 48-seat restaurant includes: an exposed ceiling with hanging plants; a personal
collection of colorful photos from the co-owners’ trip to the Philippines as well as posters showcasing the duo’s mutual interests in music (The Clash, Beastie Boys, The Pixies, etc.); a large mural of the restaurant’s logo; a black-and-white honeycomb wall at the restaurant’s drink station; and more. Hardesty and Crespo also created a number of the design elements themselves from light fixtures made out of old skateboards; a nod to the restaurant’s logo with alternating forks and spoons behind a television that plays old kung fu movies; as well as the 6-seat wood bar flanking the restaurant’s open, exhibition kitchen. In addition, an old-school arcade game, Final Fight, adds to the excitement from the kitchen. Warmer weather will also bring an additional 30 seats at a sidewalk outdoor patio. The Delmar location is the latest opening in a year of continuous growth for the casual concept. Guerrilla Street Food expanded from its flagship food truck and South Grand restaurant to open inside of 2nd Shift Brewing in July. Another outpost is on the horizon inside of Tropical Liqueurs in The Grove this spring/summer. Co-owners Brian Hardesty and Joel Crespo have also built up their team of executive chefs for each of the locations as well as welcomed restaurant industry veteran, Mike Emerson, to the team this year. Emerson, one of the most-recognizable personalities in the St. Louis food scene, co-founded the famed Pappy Smokehouse–catapulting St. Louis as a top destination for BBQ in the country. He is consulting the team on everything from employee retention to scalable operations, such as the opening of the Delmar location. Guerrilla Street Food is officially open Tuesday, March 13, 2018 in the East Delmar Loop 6120 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63112. The hours of operation are 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. For more information on Guerrilla Street Food, visit their Facebook, Twitter, and website.

Wine should be savored, not guzzled By MICHAEL AUSTIN Chicago Tribune
When you think of the broad concept of “enjoying wine,” or at least when I think of it, it’s hard not to imagine a glass being raised. Sometimes it’s a person raising a glass in a gesture of “Cheers,” and other times, it’s a bottoms-up raising of the glass as someone takes a sip or a whiff of wine. But just as often, that glass is being raised slightly — at the end of an extended arm — to move it closer to the opening of a bottle that is about to be poured. The word “bounty” springs to mind in every scenario. The people are reaching for more wine and raising it up. It is a celebration. Let the wine flow, let the trumpets blare — clothing and the clock be damned. I have nothing against whooping it up. In fact, I’m all for it. But you can do that at a measured pace. Don’t limit yourself by over-pouring. I suggest getting into the habit of pouring yourself (and your guests) just enough to be able to smell and taste the wine. You don’t have to use an eye-dropper — just be mindful of the fact that we all have our limits. And we have lots of wines to try. In some aspects of wine enjoyment — particularly the pouring aspect — being miserly usually pays greater dividends than the so-called “healthy pour” does. Let us count the ways. For one, when there is less wine in your glass, you can taste a bigger variety of wines. If you are at home with family or friends, and you have six bottles open and want to have a taste of each, a standard 5-ounce pour (which you would get in most restaurants) might not allow you to reach bottle No. 6 and, furthermore, might give you regrets the next day. Reason No. 2 in favor of miserly pours is, if you determine a favorite among the open bottles, you’ll still have room in your belly and brain to return to it for another glass — a proper pour of 5 ounces (or 6 ounces if it’s your birthday) — after everyone has already tasted it. If you have nine bottles open, your test pours are going to have to be even smaller than they were on that night when there were six bottles open. And you might even consider spitting some of those tastes — especially if you can tell right away that you don’t like them. Reason No. 3 comes to us courtesy of kindergarten. Sharing is good. When you don’t have 5 or 6 ounces in your glass, there can be a few ounces in someone else’s, and you’ll all get to taste all of the wines together, without people holding up an empty bottle and saying how much they loved it, as others stand by wishing they’d had a taste. Once everyone has tasted a bottle, it’s open season. Reason No. 4 is for your well-being. When you have less wine in your glass, you will drink more slowly, which for obvious reasons is good for everyone involved, especially you. Reason No. 5 is for confidence and pleasure. It depends on the glass, but if your glass has tall sides, its base is on the table, and your wine is below the halfway mark, you will be able to swirl with ease. Aromas will open up to you as your wine whirls, and you will not have to worry about sending a tornado of red liquid onto your cousin’s white drapes or up the sleeve of your shirt.

New football league to kick off in February By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer
Pro football — actual games — won’t disappear from TV screens, mobile devices and the American consciousness once the Super Bowl ends next February. The Alliance of American F o o t b a l l w i l l k i c k o ff the following Sunday. On network television (CBS) as well as through a multitude of free digital platforms. Yes, spring football. We know, from the USFL to the World League to the XFL, the idea has not worked. Here’s why the Alliance has a strong chance of succeeding: the folks involved.
The Alliance is the creation of Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Polian, one of the most respected and accomplished executives in NFL history, and Charlie Ebersol, a longtime TV and film producer. Ebersol’s father, Dick, defined NBC Sports’ programming for more than two decades and created “Sunday Night Football.” Dick Ebersol, who also pioneered NBC’s Olympic broadcasts, will serve on the board of directors. Former players such as Justin Tuck, Hines Ward and Jared Allen will have significant roles in a league the younger Ebersol calls a “true partnership.” “That’s the best way a league can perform and
will be ultimately the key to success, having an interwoven product,” he says. “Whenever you have an endeavor that involves the kind of teamwork football involves,” Polian adds, “it implies a partnership, the need to get their buy-in and do things, particularly in a startup, that represent their best interest ... to make sure players know we have their best interests at heart. That is the guiding philosophy.” Co-founder Polian, who built the Bills, Colts and Panthers into Super Bowl teams, will oversee the football side, helped by former player and front office executive J.K. McKay, who has been involved in other startups.
The league will have eight teams — cities and stadia to be announced, though look for complementary sites, not NFL venues, and warmer climates given the February-late April schedule. Rosters will be culled from NFL cuts to the 53-man maximum after preseason, which Polian calls “the core of our constituency”; collegians who have gone undrafted, including underclassmen who have lost any remaining eligibility; players looking to return to the sport; and free agents
from the CFL or elsewhere. As a single entity, the Alliance will own all contracts and players will be dispersed in a variety of manners. If someone played in the NFL or in college for a Florida team or school, he’d likely wind up on a Florida-based franchise, for example. There also will be a mechanism after those allocations for a team interested in a certain player to get his rights. And then coaches of specific teams will have access to a group of players outside the allocations.

A draft of players in late fall after the college season concludes — “Players who probably are coming off injury or some other situation where they want to perhaps play in our league in order to enhance their draft status,” Polian explains — also is planned. With an eye on player safety, the Alliance also will eliminate kickoffs. There is a unique plan for onside kicks, with the team wanting to try one instead taking possession at its 35 yard-line on a fourthand-10 to try one play to keep the ball.
