Artistic Adventures Harry Potter Film Concert Series returning The Harry Potter Film Concert Series returns to Powell Hall with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Concert on Sept. 14, 15 and 16, 2018, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Concert on April 12, 13 and 14, 2019, the fourth and fifth films in the Harry Potter series. The SLSO will perform the magical scores from “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” while each film plays in highdefinition on a 40-foot screen. CineConcerts and Warner Bros. Consumer Products announced the Harry Potter Film Concert Series, a new global concert tour celebrating the Harry Potter films, in 2016. June ends with two good films

I had a pretty good weekend seeing two new movies, bookending my time with “Incredibles 2” on Thursday’s opening night and sneaking off for a Monday matinee of the goofy comedy “Tag”. It’s always a pleasure to see such capable counterprogramming when both films are above average and my expectations were already running a little on the high side. “Incredibles”, in fact, supplanted “Finding Dory” by having the highest opening weekend gross for an animated movie at $182 million. Full disclosure: I don’t remember much about “The Incredibles” or necessarily even liking it all that much. Pixar’s late 2000s movies (“Cars”, “Ratatouille”, “Wall-E”) didn’t really do much for me before the studio rebounded with “Up” and “Toy Story 3” to continue their triumphant hot streak unabated. For millions of others, though, it

was a boon and they’ve obviously responded strongly to the new sequel which is set continuously from the original’s ending. Members of the heroic Parr family (Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell’s Violet, newcomer Huck Milner as Dash) are on the outs after a rescue with fellow super Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) destroys their city and has them down in the dumps. Part 2 is a rather mundane story told in a James Bond/Buck Rogers sort of format that sees Elastigirl (Hunter) off on a solo assignment while Mr. Incredible (Nelson) gets to stay closer to home and watch out for the older kids and the now super-powered baby Jack-Jack (who goes toe-to-toe with a raccoon in one of the more boffo parts of the film). Overall, the movie is actually incredible, if not all that creative. Still, it does make excellent use of the family-and-duty-first message, portrays violence in a responsible, kid-appropriate kind of way, and allows writer/director Brad Bird to reprise his role as the snarky

with businessman Bob (Jon Hamm), stoner Chilli (Jake Johnson), and the depressed Sable (Hannibal Buress) so that they can team up to take down their buddy Jerry (Jeremy Renner), the only undefeated member of the group, during his upcoming May 31st wedding to “Tag” is based on a 2013 article in the Wall Susan (Leslie Bibb). “Damsel” is an offbeat odyssey

The Zellners, who wrote, directed and costar in the film, have moved to the Old West but the Coens are still close at hand. In lesser, hit-or-miss doses, “Damsel” has imitated some of their verbal theatricality and straightfaced comedy. The “Waiting for Godot”-style opening is one of the movie’s high points. A defeatedlooking preacher (a briefly seen but terrific Robert Forster) joins a man headed West at a comically remote stagecoach stop in the middle of a Monument Valley desert. Before stripping out of his clothes and handing his half-empty Bible (pages have been torn out for kindling, rolling papers and, he bashfully adds, “hygiene”) to the traveler, he warns the man that life in the West is no better than anywhere else, just bad in “new and fascinating ways.” He then runs off in his long underwear, calling to the Lord. It’s an omen that no one in “Damsel” heeds:

Look neither toward the West, nor a woman, for your self-reinvention, your “fresh start.” Soon arriving is Robert Pattinson’s Samuel Alabaster, a stranger in town, who enlists Parson Henry (David Zellner) — the Monument Valley traveler, having inherited the pastor’s robe and Bible — to marry him and his fiancee, Penelope (Wasikowska). With a gold tooth and a miniature horse named Butterscotch, Pattinson gives the film a kick that it lacks when he departs. His Alabaster is prim, peculiar and possibly psychotic. Believing himself gallant, he has a song prepared for Penelope dubbed “Honey Bun.” Sample lyric: “You’re my horseshoe to my hoof.” It’s well into the journey when Alabaster confesses Penelope has been kidnapped, so their mission is a combination rescue-proposal. His wide-eyed ardor for Penelope begins to grow suspiciously shallow. She’s “good at reading words, even good at kissing and

lovemaking,” he says. “What more could you ask for?” The proposal, naturally, doesn’t go quite as “lickety-split” as Alabaster envisions, and Henry — a gentle and half-formed man who naively craves the adventure of meeting “a real Indian” — is carried along by the unfolding events. That he isn’t a real man of God is little surprise to anyone. “But my heart is the right place,” he whimpers. But, then again, none in “Damsel” are really quite up to the role they imagine themselves in, except for Wasikowka’s Penelope — the only sane person in the movie crowded with fools.

“Damsel,” a Magnolia Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some violence, language, sexual material, and brief graphic nudity.” Running time: 113 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Incredibles” writer/director Brad Bird has said that his characters’ powers are all born of stereotypes. Dad is strong, mom is stretched in a million directions, teenage girls put up shields, little boys are full of boundless energy and babies are unpredictable. It’s why he decided that for the sequel, “Incredibles 2 ,” a buoyant and quick-witted romp, he’d pick up right where we left off, in that parking lot after Dash’s track meet where a new threat emerges from underground. No matter that in reality, 14 years had actually passed. Animation is not bound by time or aging actors. For the rest of us, however, 14 years is still 14 years. And in the past 14 years, the business of Hollywood has become the business of superhero movies. It’s hard to remember a time when there weren’t a dozen a year. But when “The Incredibles” came out in 2004, they were still a bit of an anomaly at the multiplex — its cheeky, mockumentary realism, its jokes about capes, secret identities, “monologue-ing” and the dangers of toxic, obsessive fandom was the perfect introduction (and indoctrination) to superheroes for those who couldn’t care less. Pixar magic made superhero believers out of the skeptics. And by 2008, we all thought, sure, let’s see about this Tony Stark fellow and someone called Iron Man. In “Incredibles 2,” it seems like Bird himself is wrestling with a culture he helped facilitate — not totally dissimilar to what Steven Spielberg did earlier this year in “Ready Player One.” RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “action sequences and some brief mild language.” RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. The idea is this: Get Elvis’ old 1963 Rolls-Royce and invite a wide group of people to sit in its back seat and talk about Presley as they drive through key locations in The King’s life, from his lowly beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi, to his sad end in Graceland. So far, so good. We get Emmylou Harris to call him a “Greek tragic figure” and Chuck D to explain why he once wrote blistering lyrics that Elvis was no “hero to me.” John Hiatt even starts to cry in the back seat, profoundly sad for a fellow musician who was “trapped” in his fame. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “for language, some disturbing images and brief drug use.” RUNNING TIME: Running time: 109 minutes. That movie, patiently idiosyncratic, found some poignancy in an absurd, ambling tale about fatally misguided misconceptions, and much is the same in the offbeat “Damsel.” Almost everybody but Mia Wasikowska — the “damsel” in question — is tilting at windmills. “The King” guilty of excess

But Jarecki seems to want more, something deeper and profounder. Perhaps the rise and fall of Elvis Presley is a reflection of postWorld War II America as it morphed from small to imperial to then sick and bloated? Maybe he’s even a reflection of the history of the entire country — from poor and fragile in 1776 to the hottest thing on the planet as a superpower to later addicted to pills and destined to die on a golden toilet at age 42? All this plays out as the Clinton-Trump election comes to its nail-biting conclusion, complete with CNN and Fox news announcements about the race, muddying the focus of the film. Are we Fat Elvis? Is Trump? Throughout “The King ,” you can feel Jarecki desperately working, slicing, trying to make connections. What could have been a gentle, personal travelogue is reworked and reworked until it’s often guilty of the last sin of Elvis — excess. This film is cluttered with half-thoughts and tenuous connections, like footage from 1933’s “King Kong” making frequent appearances without much purpose. (The King. In New York. OK, we get it). The best parts are when African-American critics like Chuck D and Van Jones dig into Elvis, a man who made a fortune taking black music and making it palatable for whites.

She began singing in her church choir when she was 12 and sang in a local group with her high school friends at 16. In 1975, she successfully auditioned for the group Chapter 8, having been approached by bass player David Washington, and spent the next few years playing in and around Detroit. In 1981, she signed to Otis Smith’s Beverly Glenn label, releasing her debut album “Songstress” in 1983, which featured her signature song “Angel.” In 1986, she signed with Elektra

Records and, understanding that creative control was essential, functioned as executive producer on her megahit album “Rapture,” which sold over 6 million records worldwide. The album went multi-platinum and practically all of its tracks found rotation on nationwide radio playlists, including the tender “Caught Up in the Rapture” and “Same Ole Love (365 Days a Year).” This album brought her first two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Female Performance for the album “Rapture” and Best R&B Song for “Sweet Love,” a Top10 Pop and No. 2 R&B hit. In 1987, Anita began work on her followup album “Giving You The Best That I Got” in between an extremely busy performance schedule. This album was also awarded three Grammy Awards. Georgia showcases Cherokee history For The Edge New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia was the capitol of the Cherokee Nation from 1825 until the forced removal of the Cherokees in the 1830s. Abandoned for over 100 years, New Echota now serves as an important landmark and testimony to the rich history of the Cherokee people, including their persecution. New Echota is one of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the nation and was where the tragic “Trail of Tears” officially began. In 1825, the Cherokee national legislature established a capital called New Echota at the headwaters of the Oostanaula River. During its short history, New Echota was the site of the first Indian language newspaper office, a court case which carried to the U.S. Supreme Court, one of the earliest experiments in national self government by an Indian tribe, the signing of a treaty which relinquished Cherokee claims to lands east of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of Indians for removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears. Today, visitors can see 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the Council House, Court House, Print Shop, Missionary Samuel Worcester’s home, and an 1805 store, as well as outbuildings such as smoke houses, corn cribs and barns. In the visitor center, guest can purchase souvenirs, books, music, plus view interpretive exhibits and a 17 minute film. Nature trails leads visitors to New Town Creek and a small beaver pond. Nationally acclaimed guest choreographers including Kara Wilkes of San Francisco’s Alonzo King LINES Ballet; Claudia Schreier, Artistic Director of NYC-based Claudia Schreier & Company, and choreographer and dancer Gemma Bond of American Ballet Theatre will be setting work for the season. The COCA holiday tradition, The Little Dancer, returns in a newly imagined production, featuring COCA’s Ballet Eclectica. COCA’s vocal companies are featured in a two-concert series, fall and spring. The performance season concludes with Stephen Sondheim’s iconic twist on beloved fairy tales, Into the Woods, performed by the COCA Theatre Company. The Millstone Gallery at COCA, under the direction of Curator-In-Residence Yvonne Osei, also launches in September with Figures, Fables & Fiction, guest curated by Nancy Newman Rice and featuring a selection of figurative work from St. Louis artists including Nicole Cooper, John Hunn, David Ottinger and Victor Wang. In January, COCA is one of four national venues playing host to Art. Write. Now., showcasing a selection of works from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In the spring, Osei will curate Text as Visual Language, featuring established and emerging St. Louis artists as they explore the use of text through a variety of media. In June 2018, COCA unveiled significant renovations to its historic building – the first phase of Create Our Future, a multi-year effort to fund the capital renovation and expansion of the organization’s campus as well as build its endowment and reserves. Included in the renovations was the Staenberg Performance Lab, a sunlit central studio, rehearsal hall, and performance space, which will be the venue for several shows this season. Performances will also be presented at venues throughout the community while COCA’s new Berges Family Theatre is under construction as part of the expansion phase of Create Our Future. Subscriptions to the 2018-2019 COCA Presents season are available for purchase now. Packages start as low as $39, and subscribers can build a package of a minimum of three shows up to all seven. People planner Gateway Arch Park launches new website The Gateway Arch Park Foundation has launched a new website (ArchPark.org) highlighting the renovated spaces at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Gateway Arch, riverfront, and Kiener Plaza — together referred to as Gateway Arch Park. The new website also highlights public events, the Foundation’s membership program and ways the community can support the Arch. While the previous site conveyed the CityArchRiver project and construction updates, the new site focusses on completed park spaces and how the public can enjoy and support the new Arch experience. Visitors can learn about the legacy of the historic CityArchRiver project on an interactive timeline. Popular features from the old website

Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts, an independent nonprofit that brings sacred and classical music to St. Louis from world-class musicians, announces its concert lineup for the 26th season. The 2018-2019 season opens on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and continues through Friday, Apr. 26. Gersher Music Festival set

Now in its 8th season, the Gesher Music Festival returns for two weeks in August, bringing chamber music with a multi-cultural twist to their performances. The Festival runs from Aug. 9-19 with three formal concerts as well as several more informal opportunities to hear some of the music and meet the musicians. This year’s theme is “Voices Rising.” Three distinct concerts reflect different aspects of this theme, each in a different venue. The formal concerts are: The Legacy of Tin Pan Alley will be performed on Thursday, Aug. 16th, at the Missouri History Museum. In partnership with the Missouri History Museum and part of the MUNY Memories Exhibit. Rise Up: Sounds of Protest will be performed at the 560 Music Center Saturday, Aug. 18th. Giving Voice will be performed at the Gesher Festival’s home at the JCC’s Wool Studio Theatre. Again this year, Gesher partners with the Missouri History Museum to present the first of the formal concerts, The Legacy of Tin Pan Alley as part of the Museum’s “Muny Memories” exhibit. The concert is an evening of chamber music that will take listeners on a musical journey from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway. Along with performances by the Gesher artists, Artistic Director Sara Sitzer will tell the stories behind the music for this period. As in past years, festival musicians will be part of a Shabbat service at Central Reform Congregation Friday, August 10. There will also be two Family concerts. The 2 p.m. Aug. 11 concert at the Ferguson Public Library is free. On Sunday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. there will be a Family Concert at Temple Israel, 1 Rabbi Alvan D Rubin Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141. Tickets are $8/adult and $5/child. Children under 3 are free. Redbird Express returns to St. Clair Square

The St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD) announced the return of the popular Redbird Express bus service from St. Clair Square for the 2018 St. Louis Cardinals season. Bus service will be available for all St. Louis Cardinals home games. Parking in Downtown St. Louis for games can range from $15-40 or more. In addition, St. Clair County Transit takes the stress out of game day traffic, bridge construction, parking, gas expenses and more, by allowing game goers to sit back and enjoy the ride to and from the game. Details on the 2018 Red Bird Express are available at www.ssctd.org. Busses will depart from St. Clair Square, near the water tower, 2.5 hours before game time as busses fill, with the last bus leaving one hour before the game begins. Fares are currently $5.00 per adult, and $2.00 for children ages 2 thru 12. Celebrate 2018 with 4 Garden Honorees By MELINDA MYERS For The Edge It’s a year-long celebration of flavor and beauty as we honor and grow the beet, coreopsis, calibrachoa and tulip. The National Garden Bureau (NGB) has declared 2018 the year of these garden mainstays. This non-profit’s goal is to inspire you to grow these and more plants in your gardens at home and work. The celebration starts with the tulip, a symbol of spring. They come in a variety of flower types and colors. Select from early bloomers like Apricot beauty and end spring with a late blooming double tulip like Backpacker. Then add some pizzazz with more double blooms, ruffled petals of parrot, pointed flowers of lily types or fringed tulips. Add more low maintenance beauty to your garden with the other two National Garden Bureau “Year of Flower” designees. 2018 honors the annual calibrachoa and perennial coreopsis. Once you grow calibrachoas you’ll know why it has become a gardener’s favorite. You’ll appreciate the wide selection of colors and outstanding performance in containers. You may know these beauties by their collection or series names such as Superbells®, Million Bells®, Callie®, and Calipetite®. Use beet greens in salads and roast, cook or juice the colorful roots. Change things up with yellow and gold beets like Touchstone Gold. It’s vibrant orange-red exterior and golden center will add something special to any dish. Entice those reluctant to eat beets to the table with All-America Selections winner, Avalanche. The snow-white root has all the sweet flavor of the beet without any bitterness or earthy flavor that may have discouraged them in the past. Elvis knows his records

After years of touring as an Elvis Presley tribute artist, Collinsville native Bill Cherry has opened a store in his hometown that reflects his interests. Monster Vinyl, a record and collectible shop that combines music with horror, is located in downtown Collinsville at 107 East Main St. The store has been open since April 13. Cherry will have a grand opening and ribbon cutting during the Horseradish Festival, on June 2 at 1 in the afternoon. “I’m looking forward to having a few special guests and a few monsters walking around,” he said. The store sells used records and CDs. It also has and sells a large collection of horror movie memorabilia, including posters, masks, and books. “This store is my hobbies brought to the public,” Cherry said. “There’s a lot more to the story than Elvis Presley. I like music, monsters and horror movies.” Cherry said that he had thought about opening a store for a long time. His own collection of music and monster memorabilia is extensive. “It’s neat to have collectibles and a collection, but if you don’t have anyone to share it with, that’s an empty feeling,” he said. Cherry amassed much of his collection while touring. “Every chance I got, I’d wander the city or town I was in and check out the music stores and scene. A lot of those stores influenced this place,” he said. “This is like a taste of Delmar and the Loop on this side of the river,” he said. He already has plans to expand with a recording studio next store to the record store. “We need a recording studio that caters to local talent,” he said. “When I recorded, I had to go to St. Louis.” “It’s been going really well,” Cherry said of the store. “We’ve had a lot of interest. It’s a first of its kind, mixing horror and music.” The store buys, sells and trades merchandise. “Once the store opened, people started bringing in great things. We don’t have to seek it out. We have a lot of traffic coming through. We’ve had people come by just to take a picture of the sign.” Cherry also wants to begin selling art. “I’ve

It will be homegrown, all local talent.” Cherry began impersonating Elvis at a young age to entertain his mother. “Elvis has been a part of my whole life. My mother was an Elvis fan. She would always sing along with his records,” Cherry said. “When I was older, my parents took me to see an Elvis impersonator. I was surprised at the response.” Cherry said he realized that what he had been doing for fun and to entertain his mother could become a career. His first public performance was around 1985 or ‘86, he said. “I went to a competition in Memphis, but I didn’t win,” he said. In 1995, he stopped competing and performing. He came back for a competition in 2007 that was put on by the estate of Elvis Presley.

“That got my attention because it was the estate,” he said. “I was working at American Steel as a welder and got laid off, so I really focused on Elvis Presley during the layoff.” The competition was global, with several preliminary competitions before the finals in Memphis. Cherry won the preliminary round in Tupelo and went on to win the world competition in Memphis. “I competed against 24 preliminary winners from throughout the world,” he said. “I decided not to go back to work after the layoff. Since 2009, all I’ve done is Elvis Presley.” He has always paid tribute to the Elvis of the 1970s. “You see all the rings and the capes and the belts, and that’s royalty,” he said. “He was pretty much your first glam rock star. He set the bar in a lot of things.” After winning the competition, Cherry began performing and traveling. “I’ve been to

Singapore, Italy, Spain, all over Europe, New Zealand, Australia, you name it.” He said the most unusual place he performed was probably Qatar. “Elvis is basically a universal language,” he said. “It amazes me that paying tribute can take you places that I never got to go,” Cherry said. Now that he’s opened the store, Cherry plans to continue with his Elvis Presley tribute show, but cut down on appearances. “I want to concentrate on this,” he said, noting that in some years, he traveled all but three weeks of the year. Although Cherry said he’s amazed at the continuing demand for Elvis, he looks forward to spending more time at home. “Let’s face it, Elvis died at 43. You can’t do him forever,” Cherry said. “I’m from Collinsville. I’m a native here. This is my home town, and this is a new adventure for me.”
