Frownies Company has a long history of helping women look their best By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge I have mentioned before that I receive products from time to time requesting that I try them and let my readers know what I think. Recently I received a product that has been around since 1889, yet I had never heard of it. Face Lift in a Bag was sent to me by a c o m p a n y c a l l e d F ro w n i e s . I t h o u g h t a t first someone was politely trying to tell me something, but as I looked through the packing I realized that this was a review sample. I Googled Frownies to read more about the company and what they are about and was surprised to find that this company was started in 1889 by a woman named Margaret K ro e s e n , w h o c re a t e d s o m e t h i n g c a l l e d Wrinkle Eradicators. She invented them after discovering that her concert-pianist daughter had developed unsightly wrinkles and frown lines. She and her daughter were the only ones to use them, but they saw dramatic results. Several years later, Mrs. Kroesen went to work for B&P Company (Beauty and Personality) which specialized in barber supplies. When the company’s profits began to wain, Mrs. Kroesen bought the company and dropped the barber supplies and offered her Wrinkle Eradicators and skin treatments instead. After a renaming, a package re-design and many happy customers – including Hollywood starlets like Dixie Dunbar, Olivia de Havilland, Gloria Swanson and the Kennedy women – the products were a hit with the celebrities and their makeup artists. It became known as the best kept beauty secret. B&P Company is still the parent company of Frownies and the Frownies Skin Care line. Mrs. Kroessen’s granddaughter, Margaret Wright, still has a part in the company. Although new products have been introduced over the years, the main concept of the Frownies Facial Pads remains the same. The facial pads are used to reshape the facial muscles using nothing toxic. The Forehead and Between Eyes Patch, which is the original 1889 design, is applied over visible expression lines in the face that can be seen when you are not making an expression. The patches basically look like a piece of brown packing paper with an adhesive that is activated when moistened on the back. The concept is to hold the skin taught, once the patch dries, so that in your sleep the facial muscle will be retrained to stay taught rather than in the relaxed position that the face makes when sleeping or frowning. This especially

For The Edge
Frownies’ Face Lift in a Bag works well on the 11s – the lines that form between the eyes that look like an 11. In the Face Lift in a Bag, you receive a box of the above mentioned. Also included are the Corner of the Eyes and Mouth Patch, a part of the original 1889 design; a pH Balancing Complexion Wash; a moisturizing wrinkle cream called Biologically Active Immune Perfect, which helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles; Rose Water Hydrator, which comes in a spray bottle and is a hydrator to refresh the face and neck area throughout the day and can also be used to activate and add treatment to the back of the Frownies patches; the newest product, Under Eye Patches, a cooling gel patch treatment to help build under eye collagen, lighten dark circles and reduce puffiness under the eyes and a lip hydrator called Immune Shield for those fine lines around the lips. Let me preface my experience by saying I am not a diligent skin care person. I should be, but basically I wash off my makeup at night and hit the hay. However, I did give the complete system a try over about a four day period. Over all, I did see a difference in my skin. I should continue
to keep it up, but as I said before, I am not too disciplined in that area. I will work on it. You look a little goofy with the flesh toned patches on your face when entering the boudoir at night, but probably no more so than if you wear worn out Mickey Mouse pajamas that look like you are in the fourth grade to bed (I won’t mention who does this but I will say they are very comfortable.) The entire regimen, including sticking on the patches, probably takes about 20 minutes if done properly. In the morning, it is strictly a matter of peeling off the patches and giving a quick rinse. You can opt to re-moisturize and hydrate or apply makeup as is. I definitely see where this is a long-lasting product. It is simple, it is not chemically based and with very little time, you see results. It is worth a try. Frownies has more products in their line, which can be viewed at www.frownies.com. Their products are available on that Web site or at drugstore.com and Amazon.com. I even noticed that Amazon.com had some excellent prices on the individual boxes of the patches. I would recommend giving this product a try.

Horror Rock
Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie team up to haunt St. Charles By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Lock up your children, get out your costumes and get ready to rock the fright out of yourself. Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper are going to bring their “horror rock” to the Family Arena on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. Back by popular demand, the masters of the diabolical will reunite for The Halloween Hootenanny Tour featuring the Gruesome Twosome with special guests (and Zombie labelmates) Murderdolls. The tour kicks off in Los Angeles at the Gibson Amphitheatre on T h u r s d a y, S e p t . 3 0 . T h e p a i r recently shared the stage for a highly-successful, sold-out limited North American run earlier this year and have long been fans of one another as well as good friends. The Billings Gazette declared, “Thousands of fans got the show
of a lifetime…with elaborate multimedia stage shows and classic fist-pumping anthems, both artists brought much more to the stage than their music…the multi-sensory experience of the show will likely not be forgotten.” Charlotte’s Creative Loafing stated, “Zombie was a wildman – running around stage, flipping his hair in every way and stomping away to rev the crowd into a frenzy… Two fantastic performances…” Drummer Joey Jordison will be doing double-duty on the dates, playing drums with Rob Zombie as well as playing guitar with his own band, special guests Murderdolls. Wi t h m o re t h a n 1 5 m i l l i o n albums sold, seven Grammy nominations, the helming of five major motion pictures and dozens of music videos under his belt, Rob Zombie is a force to be reckoned with in today’s entertainment landscape. Zombie’s unique meld of horror and hard rock has influenced his sound as a musician

Alice Cooper and more recently his vision as a director and writer. Cooper ’s career spans over five decades and he has notoriously been known to play shows that feature guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls. His shows become more of a horror rock theatrical production mixed with a violent brand of heavy metal designed to shock. His 1975 album “Welcome to Nightmare” was his first solo career release, and in 2008 he released “Along Came a Spider,” which became his 18th solo album. T h e 6 2 - y e a r- o l d ro c k e r h a s not let age slow him down. He took a break from recording and performing, but in the last several years has been producing some studio albums. He received the 2007 Rock Immortal award at the “Scream Awards,” was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, received an honorary doctoral degree from Grand Canyon University and has been

Kemper to host Brazilian artist The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University will highlight Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander with “A Day Like Any Other” from Oct. 8 to Jan. 10. Brazilian conceptual artist Rivane Neuenschwander creates playful, ephemeral and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author and viewer, object and memory, permanence and temporality. This fall, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other, the artist’s first major midcareer survey. Covering a decade of work, the exhibition reveals a wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice that merges painting, photography, film, sculpture, installation and collaborative action. Like her predecessors Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Neuenschwander is at once artistic instigator, commissioning agent and social organizer, exploring themes such as nature, language, time and the poetry of the quotidian. The exhibition will highlight three works that invite direct audience participation: Walking in Circles (2000), First Love (2005) and Joe Carioca and Friends (2005). Walking in Circles consists of several circles of varying size rendered in transparent adhesive on the gallery floor. The circles darken over time as they pick up dirt from visitors’ shoes, creating a physical map of movement through the exhibition space. In First Love, participants are asked to describe their “first love” to a forensic sketch artist; the resulting portraits will be displayed in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. For Joe Carioca and Friends, Neuenschwander painted over several pages of a popular Brazilian comic, leaving visible only the speech bubbles and vibrant background colors. Each panel is then transferred to the wall as a large blackboard on which people are invited to draw their own stories. Further highlights include a pair of large-scale environmental installations. In Rain Rains (2002), buckets suspended from the ceiling drip water into corresponding buckets beneath them, creating artificial rain. Every four hours, museum staff will pour the collected water back into the upper buckets, thus maintaining the Sisyphean system of circulation. The second installation, The Conversation (2010), pays homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 film of the same title and, like the film, investigates the systematic invasion of privacy in an era of dangerously purposed technology. To stage the piece, the Kemper Art Museum will work with security experts to create an Orwellian environment filled with listening devices. Then, prior to the exhibition’s opening, Neuenschwander will raid the “bug-filled” room in an attempt to uncover those devices — a performance that will be recorded and played back in the partially dissembled exhibition space. In addition to these participatory works and installations, the exhibition will include two recent suites of paintings. For After the Storm (2010), Neuenschwander exposed maps of New York state counties to the elements for the length of the Brazilian rainy season. At a Certain Distance (Ex-Voto Paintings) (2010) alters the traditional form of the exvoto — a type of commemorative painting that serves as a remembrance or an expression of gratitude — by removing all reference to pictorial drama or caption, leaving only brilliantly colored abstract spaces. Other works will include The Tenant (2010), a lustrous film that follows the journey of a soap bubble as it drifts through the rooms of an empty apartment; Involuntary Sculptures (Speech Acts) (2001–10), a series of communally evolved sculptures made by customers during conversations at bars and restaurants near Neuenschwander ’s home in Brazil; and A Day Like Any Other (2008), an installation consisting of modified flip clocks in which all numbers have been replaced by zeros. Indeed, by constantly advancing but leading nowhere, these altered clocks — which will be placed all around the museum building — highlight the theme of temporality that runs throughout Neuenschwander’s work.

Movies
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Eat Pray Love”
This does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. Yet it also offers sufficient emotional heft and self-discovery that it’ll make people feel as if they’ve actually learned something and, perhaps, emerged as better people solely through osmosis. It’s easy to see why Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir became an international phenomenon, even without help from Oprah. Everyone’s looking for something — for answers, for their true and higher purpose — and Gilbert had the fortitude (and the wherewithal) to take off alone on a journey around the world to find herself after her divorce. Having Julia Roberts star as Liz Gilbert in the film version of the best-seller, in theory, only makes it more appealing to an even wider audience. Roberts is radiant as ever, and director and co-writer Ryan Murphy’s adaptation allows her to show off her full range with plenty of hardcore hanky moments. It’s overlong and it wraps up with the kind of romantic comedy cliches that, for the most part, were absent from the first two-thirds. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, though, it’ll make you want to head out for wine and pasta with your girlfriends afterward. Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco star as the various loves of her life. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity. RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Lottery Ticket”
The odds of winning the lottery are what, like, 1 in 175 million? The laughs aren’t quite so hard to come by here, but they’re not a safe bet, either. The feature debut from longtime music video director Erik White, which he co-wrote with Abdul Williams, starts out amiably enough, with a shaggy, shambling vibe. But it eventually devolves into a weirdly violent streak, followed by some seriously heavy-handed sentimentality. Still, the ensemble cast manages to keep things sporadically enjoyable. Rapper-actor Bow Wow is all grown up here as Kevin, a recent high school graduate who’s stuck working at Foot Locker but dreams of creating his own shoe line. “Lottery Ticket” is at its strongest off the top, as Kevin tries to make his way to work at the mall one morning but keeps getting delayed by the random neighbors in his Atlanta housing project. Brandon T. Jackson has a loose, easy energy about him and gets many of the best lines. But when Kevin
September 16, 2010
plays the lottery and wins the $370 million jackpot, everything changes, with people cozying up to him or trying to kill him because he’s now a rich man. And because he wins over the extended July 4 weekend, he must wait three days to cash in. Loretta Devine, Naturi Naughton and Ice Cube co-star. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, language including a drug reference, some violence and brief underage drinking. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Piranha 3D”
Mere words cannot describe how awesomely gnarly this is, how hugely entertaining, and how urgently you must get yourself to the theater to see it. This is not a joke, by the way. This movie is a complete blast. To borrow a phrase from the kind of B-horror flicks to which “Piranha 3D” is such an effective homage: Run, don’t walk. Like “Snakes on a Plane,” which came out in the dead of summer four years ago, “Piranha 3D” knows exactly what it is and does exactly what it should do. It’s about piranhas ... in 3-D. It’s cleverly knowing without collapsing into parody. It makes great use of its extremely random cast, including Elisabeth Shue in an unusually bad-ass role as a sheriff, Ving Rhames as her deputy and Jerry O’Connell as a Joe Francis type. Christopher Lloyd has one great scene in full-on, crazed Christopher Lloyd mode as the resident fish expert. The second you see Eli Roth — playing the emcee at a wet T-shirt contest, no less — you know some hideous fate will befall him. And then there’s Richard Dreyfuss, who makes a very cute cameo off the top. That’s all we’ll say. But the whole point of this kind of movie is the gore, and French director Alexandre Aja finds hilarious and creative ways to kill off his characters — drunk, horny college kids who’ve descended on a lake for spring break. RATED: R for sequences of strong bloody horror, violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language, and some drug use. RUNNING TIME: 82 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Flipped”
Rob Reiner’s latest has been billed as a return to form for the director and a companion piece to his “Stand By Me.” Like that film, “Flipped” is a coming-of-age ode to youth cloaked in mid-century Americana (the early 1960s). It’s nostalgic for
nostalgia. There’s charm here and some honest observations of adolescence. But there’s also a willful, cloying datedness to the movie — overly stuffed with period detail like an “Archie” comic strip. It tracks a boy (Callan McAuliffe) and a girl (Madeline Carroll) from 7-years-old to 13, and all the fluctuating emotions in between. The strength of “Flipped” is in its trueness to humdrum adolescence. It’s filled not with extravagant dramas, but instead portrays how seemingly minor happenings take on grand meaning: the tragic tearing down of the cherished sycamore, the terrifying formality of a sit-down dinner, the frightening awkwardness of nearly everything. But it lacks both the darkness and comedy of “Stand By Me” and its device of flipping every scene to show both kids’ perspective drags the film. With Aidan Quinn and Anthony Edwards as the fathers, and John Mahoney as a grandfather. RATED: PG for language and some thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Last Exorcism”
One of the scariest movies to come along in a long time — until the last five minutes or so, when it completely falls apart. Director Daniel Stamm’s faux documentary starts out with deadpan delivery and a dry sense of humor, then it turns riveting, then truly frightening, then just plain silly. It’s like it morphs from being a Christopher Guest movie to “The Blair Witch Project.” Until then, the filmmakers keep you guessing as to what’s real and what’s imagined, what’s a disturbing mental disorder and what’s actually demonic possession. And the fact that this Eli Roth production uses all unknown actors helps us get sucked into this eerie world. Evangelical Louisiana preacher Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) has been performing exorcisms for the past 25 years but he knows they’re all a sham. He long ago lost his faith, and for a while has had no qualms about taking money from true believers in the name of supporting his own family. Now, with his conscience weighing on him, he lets a camera crew come behind the scenes to expose his tricks as he “performs” one last exorcism. Fabian finds the balance in his character’s conflicting motivations, and Ashley Bell is extraordinary as the teenager who’s been acting strangely. RATED: PG-13 for disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Movies “The American” more artsy than good By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Hidden from critics until just before its release, the dirty secret about “The American” turns out to be that it’s an “art film.” Heavens, no! Director Anton Corbijn has crafted a quiet, haunting European thriller, drained of emotion and moving to its own deliberate pace. It’s the second film from Corbijn, a famed photographer and music video director who’s closely associated with the bands Depeche Mode and Joy Division (among others). His first film, “Control,” was a beautiful, austere black-andwhite biopic of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. “The American,” too, has the bleak fatalism of a Joy Division song, but taut and restrained, it bears none of the rock ’n’ roll release. George Clooney plays an assassin, Jack, whom the film opens on in bed with a beautiful woman, warm next to a fire in a winter cabin. Afterward, they bundle up and take a stroll in the knee-deep snow, where snipers suddenly begin firing at them. Jack quickly and with obvious skill dispatches the threat, and tells his shocked companion to call the police. As soon as she turns, he shoots her in the back of the head. So much for pillow talk. His boss (Johan Leysen) tells him by phone to lie low in a small Italian village. Arriving there, he takes one look at it and makes a Uturn, settling on the more appealing nearby town of Castelvecchio, a picturesque medieval village in the mountains of Abruzzo. Jack putts around town — a
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Focus Features, George Clooney is shown in a scene from, “The American.” stone labyrinth — posing as a photographer of landscapes and architecture. Though he has been warned not to “make any friends,” the town priest, Father Benedetto (Paulo Bonacelli), befriends him, and he develops a relationship with a prostitute, Clara (Violante Placido). They both see the darkness hanging over Jack, but are hopeful for him. Clara tells him, “You’re a good man, but you have a secret.”
Father Benedetto warns, “You’re American. You think you can escape history.” His past is catching up, too. Someone is shadowing him, reports of his previous misdeeds are showing up in the newspapers and a new job arrives: building a silent, highly precise rifle — a task which he attends to with the care of an artisan. Though Jack says little and re m a i n s l a rg e l y i n s c r u t a b l e ,
Corbijn — working from a script by Rowan Joffe, loosely adapted from Martin Booth’s 1990 novel, “A Very Private Gentleman” — gives glimpses of his sensitivity. He finds it difficult to deny the companionship of the priest or the love of Clara. He has a weakness, too, for butterflies, with a tattoo of one of them on his back. The question of Jack’s salvation is hinted at by the remarkable opening title sequence (which follows the
abrupt shooting in the snow) that simply frames Jack in silhouette as he drives through a long tunnel with a bright light shining at the end. “Michael Clayton” concluded with Clooney similarly in a car, but fully lit, finally unburdened. Here, with dark gray hair and a sinewy frame, he’s again downcast, troubled and full of doubt. He’s cast off all hint of his most abundant characteristic: charm.
Cut your losses and skip “Machete” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Those of you who can remember 2006 won’t be quite so surprised that one of the weekend’s new releases exists after all. Director Robert Rodriguez has used his considerable notoriety and the sizable resources of his own production studio, Tr o u b l e m a k e r, t o d e l i v e r a feature length film called “Machete,” based on the “fake” coming attraction trailer he created for his Grindhouse collaboration with Quentin Tarantino. “Grindhouse” may have tanked at the box office, but those of us who experienced it as a wholly unique thrill ride remember the faux ads that bridged the gap between the two halves of the double feature as something special. Sadly, and
September 16, 2010
p r e d i c t a b l y, “ M a c h e t e ” w a s better at two minutes than it is at two hours. Machete is a mexploitation movie. That is, it exploits Mexican people. It doesn’t do i t c r u e l l y, I g u e s s , b u t t h a t ’ s still not the best label to use to describe a movie that can’t ever be much more ambitious than a labor of love. Machete himself (Danny Trejo) is a federale who cleans up the trash south of the border, primarily wielding justice at the end of a really long knife. His primary enemy is Torrez (Steven Seagal), an enigmatic c r i m i n a l f i g u re w h o e s p o u s e s Buddhist sayings as he dishes out pain with swift stabs of his Samurai sword. After butchering his enemy’s family, Torrez leaves Machete for dead in a house fire. The scarred antihero survives
to make his way into the U.S. where he hopes to find peace. Instead, Machete falls into a political mess when he takes up with a Mexican-American coyote (Michelle Rodriguez), an immigration officer (Jessica Alba), and a would-be assassin (Jeff Fahey, notably of TV’s Lost, but a long-time collaborator of Robert Rodriguez). Fahey plays Booth, the chief of staff for a nasty Texas Senator (Robert De Niro) who uses the immigration issue not only as his platform, but as his defining personality trait. When Senator McLaughlin’s violent, bigoted views on border control lose him points in the standings, Booth seeks out a desperate day laborer to take the fall for a faked assassination attempt to boost his boss in the eyes of his God-fearing constituency.
He wrongly chooses Machete as his patsy and spends the better part of the movie trying to stop his one-man vendetta o f r e t r i b u t i o n . Tr e j o i s t h e perfect casting choice for this ro l e b e c a u s e o f h i s s t a r t l i n g appearance, determined sneer, and ability to use little or no dialogue to say everything he needs to say. Joining the core cast of this picture are some other interesting choices, like former Spy Kid Daryl Sabara as a trashtalking gangbanger and Lindsay Lohan as, get this, a drug-using privileged kid with a propensity to find herself out of her clothes and in trouble with her poor life choices. Does art imitate life? I also enjoyed a Nash Bridges minireunion with Cheech Marin and Don Johnson playing extended cameos. Marin plays Machete’s
brother, a priest who walks a fine moral line, especially when wielding a mean pair of pumpaction shotguns against thugs who come after his church. Johnson’s part is Von Jackson, a mercenary of sorts who patrols the U.S.-Mexico border with a posse of bloodthirsty rednecks, shooting illegal crossers with e x t re m e p re j u d i c e . H e ’ s t h e leader of McLaughlin’s personal army and the ugly face of America that we try in real life to fight every day. Rodriguez (and co-director Ethan Maniquis) made the movie he wanted to see with this effort. I have a sick feeling he’s in the minority on that note. ••• “Machete” runs 105 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, language, some sexual content, and nudity. I give this film one star out of four.

Movies Reiner gets nostalgic with "Flipped" By JAKE COYLE Associated Press “Checkered” would be too kind of a way to characterize Rob Reiner’s recent filmography as a director. His last decade has included the romantic comedies “Rumor Has It...” and “Alex & Emma,” and his last film, 2007s’ “The Bucket List.” It’s been a while since his incredible start in the ‘1980s: “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Sure Thing,” “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride” and “When Harry Met Sally...” Reiner’s latest, “Flipped,” has been billed as a return to form for the director and a companion piece to “Stand By Me.” Like that film, “Flipped” is a coming-of-age ode to youth cloaked in mid-century Americana (the early 1960s). It’s a kind of film that’s nostalgic for nostalgia. There’s charm here and some honest observations of adolescence. But there’s also a willful, cloying datedness to the movie — like a lost episode of “The Wonder Years” or an “Archie” comic strip. “Flipped” — and its ‘50s, ‘60s jukebox soundtrack — opens with Curtis Lee’s “Pretty Little Angel Eyes” and a close-up of young Juli Baker (Morgan Lily as 7-year-old old Juli, Madeline Carroll for most of the film). She’s there on Bonnie Meadow Lane to greet her new neighbors moving in, and she immediately falls for Bryce Loski (Ryan Ketzner as young Bryce, Callan McAuliffe predominantly) and his “dazzling eyes.” He responds by hiding behind his mother, and continues to go to extremes to avoid Juli: “My life had become a minefield,” he says.
The film tracks these two through childhood, spending most of the time at 13-years-old, when Bryce is beginning to soften to Juli’s long held crush. Reiner co-wrote the script with Andrew Scheinman (a producer from many of Reiner’s best), adapting Wendelin Van Draanen’s 2001 young adult novel. Though Reiner has shifted the book’s present day setting, he has kept its central device: switching back and forth between the perspectives of Bryce and Juli, each narrating their version of the same events. Reiner flips the image with a “whoosh!” Perspective is the plaything of “Flipped.” Juli — idealistic and preternaturally wise — keeps a sacred perch atop a neighborhood sycamore tree. Bryce’s family (Anthony Edwards plays his cynical father, Rebecca De Mornay his kinder mother) judges Juli’s family (Aidan Quinn as her likable father, Penelope Ann Miller as her mother) for their ugly front lawn. Bryce comes to see Juli differently after his grandfather (John Mahoney), observing his late wife in her, rhapsodizes that she’s “iridescent.” The strength of “Flipped” is in its trueness to humdrum adolescence. It’s filled not with extravagant dramas, but instead portrays how seemingly minor
happenings take on grand meaning: the tragic tearing down of the cherished tree, the terrifying formality of a sit-down dinner, the frightening awkwardness of nearly everything. But the “flipped” device
becomes a contrivance that doesn’t hide the movie’s lack of emotional momentum. Though it makes clumsy stabs at life’s difficulties with a mentally retarded brotherin-law and an out-of-place bit of domestic violence, the film lacks
the darkness of “Stand By Me” — and its jokes, too. It relies too much on “Leave it to Beaver” period fetishizing: bicycles on the front lawn, neatly parted hair, baseball pennants on a boy’s wall, white people everywhere.

That’s Amore
Wedding to highlight Collinsville’s 27th Annual Italian Fest By RACHEL DAVIS Of The Edge The 27th Annual Italian Fest brings the best of Italian culture a n d c u i s i n e t o t h e s t re e t s o f Collinsville Sept. 17 and 18. All the best features of the festival return for 2010 – the grape stomp, bocce ball, live music and a plethora of Italian food. But this year features some new activities, along with a first-ever for Italian Fest – a live wedding to celebrate this year ’s theme of “That’s Amore.” “Italian Fest has kind of become Collinsville’s homecoming,” said Debbie Bozsa of the Italian Fest Committee. Every year, around 150 people attend the fest to watch the parade and participate in favorite competitions. Two such competitions are back again for 2010. The grape stomp takes place at noon on Friday. Participants shed their shoes and stomp down buckets of grapes for the yearly “bragging rights” of ultimate grape stomper, as Bozsa puts it. It’s not unusual to see rival business owners issue friendly challenges to each other, and memories run long regarding wins and losses from previous years. Bocce ball is another favorite. This traditional Italian game involves throwing heavy wooden balls at a white marker. Points are awarded for landing the closest. “For folks who go every year, bocce ball is like their bragging rights. Who’s got the best bocce team, who won in what year and who’s gotten better,” said Bozsa. “Bocce is a big part of Collinsville. . . it’s fun and it’s rowdy.” The bocce ball tournament takes place Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. Along with these games, the fest also brings back its large selection of Italian food vendors, its children’s area, and the 5K run/walk.
New this year is a wine tasting event held in conjunction with the annual wine judging competition. While judges try the local competing wines, participants can partake of Italian wine tasting for a $5 admission fee. Italian wines will also be available for purchase. The 5K includes two new events for kids this year. After the main run at 8 a.m. on Saturday, a halfmile Kids’ Fun Run will get started on Main Street. All participants will win awards and get to visit with Izzy the Grizzly. Then at 9:45
a.m., infants 12 months and younger gear up for the ten-foot diaper dash. Whoever crawls to the finish line first receives a $100 savings bond. But the special event which will make the 2010 Italian Fest memorable is the wedding of local residents Molly Philips and Carl Kelly during the parade. Philips, 20, of Granite City, and Kelly, 28, of Belleville, were waiting to marry until they could afford the wedding of their dreams. Meanwhile, the Italian Fest committee proposed the idea of
holding a real wedding during the celebration to go along with the theme “That’s Amore.” When Philips and Kelly heard of the idea, they were thrilled. The pair will be wed on a float as the parade ambles down Main Street. Afterwards, the children’s area of the festival will be cleared out and decorated for the wedding reception. The reception will include a DJ, dancing, and cake cutting. Italian Fest got its start in 1984 when a few uptown retailers
decided to have a Columbus Day promotion. The first participants came from some of Collinsville’s many Italian families, so they set up booths with traditional Italian food and activities. “It was very small,” Bozsa said, “but just a lot of fun.” A couple of years later the festival became more formalized w h e n a g ro u p o f m e rc h a n t s joined in. The parade was added. In 1987 Collinsville Progress, a subcommittee of the Chamber of Commerce, became involved. Italian Fest was on its way to becoming the biggest and best of Collinsville’s summer festivals. Eventually it was moved from October to September to take advantage of the good weather. Bozsa says the committee hopes for good weather on Sept. 17 and 18. For more information visit www. italianfest.net.
At top, Western Spaghetti has become an Italian Fest tradition, with this year's performance marking their seventh year, when they take the Milano Stage from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. At left, the Collinsville Kahok Marching Band participates in a past Italian Fest parade. Photos for The Edge.

Travel Travel briefs In first 8 months, returns good for Kansas casino DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) — Despite the poor economy, the first state-owned casino in Kansas is exceeding revenue projections a n d d r a w i n g c u s t o m e r s f ro m throughout the Midwest, according to lottery officials. Since it opened in December 2009, the Boot Hill Casino & Resort in Dodge City has brought in total revenue of about $24.2 million. That puts the casino on track to meet its first-year goal of $39.7 million, said Ed Van Petten, executive director of the Kansas Lottery. “We’re somewhat amazed and very pleased,” Van Petten told The Hutchinson News. “It’s a very first-class facility. The numbers are strong. We were fearful that the projections were aggressive, but they are meeting them and are slightly above.” T h e c a s i n o ’ s re v e n u e s h a v e meant $362,801 apiece for Dodge City and Ford County. “The numbers have gotten s t r o n g e r, ” Va n P e t t e n s a i d . “June showed a slump, but July and August are very good. The management is making money. They are being successful.” General Manager Mark Kashuda said the casino is averaging more than 60,000 visitors a month, with about 70 percent of the visitors 45 and older. “Back when we first opened and the weather was cold, we had a few instances when we had a line of people waiting outside the casino,” Kashuda said. Kashuda said most of the casino’s customers are from Kansas. “Oklahoma is second, Texas and Colorado, and then it’s a tie between Nebraska and Missouri,” he said. Nettie Bray of Sterling tried her luck on the quarter slot machine last week at the casino. “I won just a little bit,” said Bray. She said it was her fourth trip to the casino, and she’s thrilled to have a casino so close to home, rather than going to Topeka or Oklahoma for occasional gaming. Dodge City Police Chief Robin James said the opening of casino has not led to an increase in crime. “When we do get calls, it might be for something medical, nothing out of the ordinary,” he said. The first thing visitors see when they walk into the casino is a contact number for those with problem gambling. And 2 percent of all revenue from the casino goes to a fund for treatment and prevention for substance abuse and problem gambling. Mark Blakeslee, who teaches

treatment for problem gambling at Dodge City Community College, said he supports the casino but cautions that problems that may arise. “The casino is a necessary thing for the revenue to keep the state going and will generate a lot of money,” he said. But it also could create problems without strategies to encourage people to gamble in moderation. “Gambling is entertainment,” Blakeslee said. “If you’re going to the casino to win, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”

In northern shore towns, they’re called Bennies (an acronym for “Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and New York” or variations thereof.) In the south, “Shoobies” refers to the days when New Yorkers and Philadelphians packed their lunch in shoe boxes for train trips to the shore.

Shaman’s Harvest
The healing process Shaman’s Harvest looks to rock beyond Missouri’s borders
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The alternative rock group Shaman’s Harvest is well known in the St. Louis metropolitan area. They have played their hearts out in many of the local venues over the last decade. Pop’s, Pointfest, and their hometown favorite stomping grounds, The Blue Note, are just a few places they have frequented with their shows. More recently, Shaman’s Harvest has been in demand nationally. Having opened for some of the hottest bands – Alice In Chains, AC/DC, Papa Roach and Godsmack – this five-piece band that began in Jefferson City, Mo., is making waves. Not just radio waves, but movie soundtrack waves too. Their biggest hit to date, “Dragonfly” was selected as part of the soundtrack for the WWE’s movie release “Legendary” which is out in theaters now. Lead singer, Nate “Drake” Hunt, in a recent interview with The Edge, kind of chuckled when asked about the movie inclusion. “WWE has recently started making kind of serious movies. This one is kind of a feel good movie where a boy is trying to bring a family back together. I think ‘Dragonfly’ is in the background of a montage during the movie,” said Hunt.
September 16, 2010
Maybe just trying to not sound too egotistical about the movie kudos, Hunt’s chuckle didn’t hide the fact that the group is proud that they are finally receiving some recognition on a much larger level. “We have played all over this area for years, getting our name out there. We love the St. Louis area and we can’t wait to play there again,” said Hunt. The band is scheduled to play on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the KSHE 95 Pig Roast at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 14141 Riverport Dr., in Maryland Heights. The group is currently on tour with the group Cavo. The Edge asked the inevitable question about what the name “Shaman’s Harvest” means and where did it come from. Hunt kind of laughed and said, “Actually my mom came up with it. The name Shaman comes directly from the definition of a spiritual being, or healer. The name Shaman’s Harvest refers to our music being spiritually rejuvenating. We all use music at different times in our life to renew ourselves. We hope that people will relate to our music for that reason. It is amazing though, going from town to town and seeing people singing the words to your songs.” The other band members are bassist Matt Fisher, rhythm guitarist Josh Hamler, lead guitarist Ryan Tomlinson and drummer Craig Wingate. Hunt, Fisher and Hamler have been playing together since high
school. Hunt’s brother was part of the band for many years, but recently hung up his Shaman’s Harvest membership for fatherhood and family time. But Ryan Tomlinson did a great job filling the shoes and the group is thriving with four albums under their belt. Shaman’s Harvest hopes to take some time off when their tour ends in October to get back in the studio, write some music and work on re-releasing some of their earlier stuff that is now out of print. “People have been requesting some stuff from our first couple albums and they aren’t available anymore. You might be able to get some of the cuts on iTunes, but I’m not positive about that. So we want to work on getting some of the early stuff back out there for people who are just discovering our music. Some of the first stuff I wrote when I was 16 years old! “ said Hunt. They are hoping to also get a date to play at The Blue Note in Columbia, Mo., which is the closest thing to home base for them. They have some great memories from playing that venue. Shaman’s Harvest has their latest album “Shine” currently available on iTunes, or the CD is available at Best Buy, Amazon.Com or other retail outlets. Find out more about Shaman’s Harvest, including their performance schedule at www.shamansharvest. com or www.myspace.com/shamansharvest.

Tonight’s concert just one of many events celebrating an Edwardsville icon By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge The city of Edwardsville is expected to reopen the Wildey Theatre as early as March, 2011. After several unsuccessful attempts to lure private developers, the city decided to renovate the historic building itself in 2009. Now, the city is deep in the construction process. At a recent Wildey Theatre Development Committee, the members were busy picking out paint colors and carpeting with the architect on the project, Salim Rangwala. Wildey Development Committee Chair Alderman Rich Walker said the renovation is running “under budget and on time.” “We have gotten a lot of good bids,” Walker said. Walker said the committee was currently waiting on some building permits for the project and once they are approved, the contractor will have a solid date for completion. The estimated $2.89 million dollar project will renovate the 21,329square-foot building – completely renovating the theatre and partially renovating the second and third floors for potential commercial tenant space. The project is set to be paid with
Community Redevelopment funds (entertainment tax), loan proceeds, donations, grants, Tax Increment Redevelopment funds (if necessary) a n d o t h e r a p p ro v e d f u n d i n g sources. Along with working on the details of the renovation, Walker said the committee is also engrossed in planning and hosting fundraisers to help pay for the project. Wa l k e r s a i d o n e u p c o m i n g fundraiser that the entire community is invited to attend is a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Edwardsville High School. He said EHS students will perform music from movies shown at the Wildey in the past such as “The Big Chill,” “Rocky,” “Mission Impossible,” “Star Wars,” “The Blues Brothers,” “The Pink Panther”
and “Psycho.” In addition, Walker said there will be movie clips, a narrator and an emcee. The cost to attend is $20 and tickets are on sale at the Edwardsville Public Library, located at 112 South Kansas or at Edwardsville City Hall, located at 118 Hillsboro. The committee is also still selling Wildey Theatre t-shirts for $15 to help raise money for the cause. Shirts are available at Annie’s Frozen Custard, TheBANK of Edwardsville, Beyond Timbuktu, Crushed Grapes, Sacred Grounds, TheEdgeBank, City Hall, the YMCA, the Edwardsville Library and Market Basket. Walker said the city’s Parks Department has also been reviewing potential programming for the theatre once it opens. He said they
can start planning some movies, but as far as live performances they will need a set opening date first. The city said it would like to see a variety of programs when the theatre reopens including: professional performances; locally originated arts productions – both visual and performing; movies, such as classic cinema, art and travel films, cartoon festivals and highly acclaimed second-run films all presented in “movie palace” style; facility rentals to businesses, churches, schools and to individuals for meetings recitals, receptions, reunions, lectures, book reviews, debates and other special events. To learn more about the Wildey Theatre and view more construction photos, visit www.wildeytheatre. com.

sk if anyone knows about Charlie Gitto’s and you will probably hear that the owner is good friend of someone you know. Sometimes something is old enough to become new again. Charlie Gitto’s Italian Family Restaurant in St Louis has been a gathering spot for well-known baseball personalities and other celebrities since 1974. But, it may be a first time for you. Howard Cosell, Frank Sinatra, Tommy Lasorda, Vincent Price, and Mick Jagger have all hung out with Charlie at his corner table. However, there are so many baseball players in the gallery you can’t name them all. Wall to wall autographed
photos, caricatures and even a Leroy Neiman painting of Steve Garvey feature some of the famous visitors who have maintained long standing relationships with Charlie over the years. Classic Italian food is plentiful with appetizers from $3 to $13, dinner entrees from $14.99 to $24.99 and lunch entrée from $7.99 to $10.99. Take out is also available. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and opens at 11 a.m. on all other days. Be sure and ask for Karen or Jim, Charlie’s daughter and son in-law, to get some first hand stories about their famous customers. un and a gentle breeze is the perfect appetizer to some tasty seasonal dishes at the Terrace View Café overlooking the Sculpture Garden in downtown St Louis. In fact their liquor license extends into the Sculpture Garden so strolling and sipping with a guide is also an option while waiting for your entrée. Executive Chef Nick Cox changes the menu frequently to take advantage of the freshest ingredients. The glass-enclosed restaurant was opened in August of 2009 and serves a variety of dishes featuring seasonal organic produce and grass feed animal protein. The 50 Mile salad changes every day with ingredients from a 50-mile radius. Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a fixed price menu is available for $25 including a drink. The a la carte offerings range from $5 to $15. Quartinos of wine (two glasses) allow you pair different wines with an arrangement of tapas like servings. The inside area can accommodate 85 seated and up to 125 in a cocktail setting. Monday through Saturday lunch is served from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and reopens at 5 p.m. for dinner. After November 1st hours will be limited during a week and holiday parties can be booked. The 17 foot glass sliding door turns the inside area into a human snow globe if the weather cooperates. But, the dramatic patio lighting will make any evening meal here a unique experience. The Terrace View 808 Chestnut St. St Louis, MO 63101 (314) 436-8855

Philly chef finds recipe for success PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The heat is up and the clock is ticking down on Jose Garces and two colleagues as they feverishly chop, grill and blend their way through a top-secret practice run for Food Network’s “Iron Chef America.” The genial and low-key Garces, out to defend the title he wrested from chef Bobby Flay last season, offers no hint of angst or “Hell’s Kitchen”-type temper tantrums. But inside, he is freaking out. “The last 15 minutes — words can’t describe,” he said afterward. “Your stomach gets in a knot, you don’t know if everything’s done.” Garces’ focus on the food, not the limelight, has served him well in TV’s Kitchen Stadium and on the streets of Philadelphia, where he has opened six popular and well-reviewed restaurants in five years. Two more are on the way, plus a cookbook and taco truck. “He’s impressive — there’s no way around it,” said Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig LaBan. “He’s not just a Philadelphia chef anymore.” Garces’ eateries run from Basque-inspired tapas to PeruvianAsian cuisine to modern Mexican. Their success is a combination of imaginative menus, stylish design and the increasing culinary sophistication of urban foodies, who want authentic tastes without the stuffy atmosphere of formal dining. “The country is ready to accept these new flavors and new ingredients,” said Mitchell Davis, vice president of the culinary James Beard Foundation. “We are coming out of our comfort-food zone.” The foundation named Garces best chef in the mid-Atlantic region in 2009 for Amada, the

“Iron Chef” Jose Garces is seen during a practice cooking session for an appearance on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef” in Philadelphia. Garces has opened six restaurants in five years, with two more coming this fall. Andalusian tapas bar he opened four years earlier. LaBan describes Amada’s dishes as “little jewel boxes,” including Spanish tortilla with saffron aioli, octopus served with olive oil and paprika, and
gazpacho with crab meat and avocado ice cream. Garces grew up in what he described as an Irish-PolishHispanic neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side. His

formal culinary training came from Kendall College in Chicago, but he got his start at home with his Ecuadorean mother and g r a n d m o t h e r, c o o k i n g d i s h e s like green plantain empanadas, ceviches and arepas — fluffy corn cakes filled with cheese. “I just enjoyed it and it was fun. I was always a food lover, always kind of a chunky kid,” Garces told The Associated Press. “These ladies were always making delicious food and obviously it sort of rubbed off.” Today, Garces’ repertoire goes beyond nuevo Latino cuisine. Village Whiskey, his burgers-andbourbon corner bar, serves up hand-ground patties of organic beef with duck-fat fries; by the end of the year, he’ll open a beer-andbrats sausage joint. Coming in September: the opening of JG Domestic, a fine dining restaurant; the launch of Guapos Tacos, a truck that will sell street food, as well as cater special events; and an appearance on “Iron Chef America” Sept. 12. A second cookbook is planned for fall 2011. On top of all that, Garces is executive chef at Mercat a la Planxa in Chicago. “It’s a lot,” Garces said.
“Hopefully life will balance out again.” Perhaps the only restaurateur with more name recognition — and more eateries — in Philadelphia is Stephen Starr, Garces’ one-time boss. Garces came from New York to help open Starr’s Alma de Cuba and then stayed to create the menu for his flashy Mexican eatery, El Vez. “He was always a very conscientious, creative chef,” Starr said. “I really am very happy for Jose. It’s sort of like looking at your children growing up. I believe he learned a lot from me and my company.” Still, in the pressure cooker of celebrity chefdom, there is always a danger of overexposure and taking on too many projects. Owners of competing BYOBs in Philadelphia are seething about a state-run wine boutique that Pennsylvania officials opened inside Garces’ gourmet market and cafe, Garces Trading Co. — essentially giving him a free liquor license. But none of it is slowing down the 38-year-old chef. He recently bought a 40-acre farm in Ottsville, about 40 miles north of the city, which might eventually yield organic produce for JG Domestic.

Tube Time Staub leaving “Real Housewives” LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bravo is cleaning house. The network announced Monday that Danielle Staub, the fire-starter on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” would not be returning to the show. Throughout the tumultuous second season, Staub enraged Caroline Manzo, her sisterin-law Jacqueline Laurita and family friend Teresa Giudice, though Staub seemed to make amends at the end of Monday’s reunion episode. “The reunion was Danielle’s last appearance on ’The Real Housewives of New Jersey,”’ said Andy Cohen, Bravo’s senior vice president of original programming and development who also hosts “The Real Housewives” reunion shows. “We thought the hugs were a great way to end two seasons of bitterness between the women.” It’s the latest in a series of “Real Housewives” departures. Sarcastic chef Bethenny Frankel, who starred earlier this year in the spin-off “Bethenny Getting Married?” — about her nuptials and pregnancy — told Us Weekly magazine last week that she did not want to return for the New York edition’s fourth outing because last season was “scary and painful.” “Do I expect her to be holding an apple at the beginning of the show? Probably not,” said Cohen. “She’s had great success with her own show. On the flip side, I do hope to see her in the ’Housewives’ universe in some way.” Last month, energetic entrepreneur Lisa Wu Hartwell was also officially revealed to not be among the Atlanta ladies’ third season, premiering Oct. 4. Cohen said it’s because she “moved far, far, far outside of Atlanta.” NeNe Lekes, Kim Zolciak, Sheree Whitfield and Kandi Burruss will instead be joined by model Cynthia Bailey and lawyer Phaedra Parks. “This is a fairly smooth transition,” said Cohen, “though I can’t say Phaedra is NeNe’s favorite from the get-go.” Lynne Curtain, the spacey mother of two rowdy teenage daughters introduced at the beginning of Orange County’s fourth season, posted on her Facebook profile last month that she would not be returning to the show. Cohen wouldn’t comment on the most recent cast changes with the Orange County entourage because the sixth season is currently in production. It’s a hefty amount of turnover for the Bravo

franchise. Only brash original housewife Vicki Gunvalson remains on the Orange County edition, while the New York, Atlanta and New Jersey chapters have all experienced cast changes. (“The Real Housewives of D.C.,” with alleged White House partycrasher Michaele Salahi, is currently airing its first season.) Cohen said when he seeks out new “Real Housewives” he looks for independent, strong, attractive and wealthy women who are typically mothers that are married, divorced or engaged. He said new cast members should have a connection to the existing “Real Housewives.” Atlanta additions Parks and Bailey, for example, were friends of Burruss and Lekes. While several women are moving on from the 4-yearold franchise, an entirely new group of “Real Housewives” in Beverly Hills is preparing for its close-up, debuting Oct. 14. Cohen promised a return to over-the-top opulence and a family dynamic similar to the New Jersey series with a pair of sisters who happen to be connected to the Hilton family. The Beverly Hills cast
includes: Adrienne Maloof, whose family owns the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas; Camille Grammer, ex-wife of “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer; Lisa Vanderpump, a transplanted British restaurateur; Taylor Armstrong, wife of venture capitalist Russell Armstrong; and Kim and Kyle Richards, former child stars and aunts of Paris Hilton. “There’s big, big, big drama and big, big, big tension,” said Cohen. “They all live near each other, and it’s amazing. You’ll see what it means to be someone’s neighbor in Beverly Hills. You have to walk a mile to get to your next door neighbor ’s house. Adrienne and Lisa live across the street from each other. I’ve never seen wealth on that scale.” Bravo is constantly searching for new cast members, both in existing and potential locales, according to Cohen. That means interviewing and filming test footage of possible “Real Housewives” with their friends and families. Cohen said the network has attempted to wrangle a Texas edition for the past two years but “never hit it” with the right group of women.

Religion Religion in the news Court rules against Jewish inmate who wanted to grow a beard CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that inmates have no First Amendment rights to grow a beard, rejecting the claim of an orthodox Jew who said a prison limit on facial hair violated his constitutional rights. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Steven McAuliffe ruled in the suit brought by Albert Kuperman that prison officials’ concerns about hygiene and security trump i n m a t e s ’ f re e e x p re s s i o n a n d religious rights. McAuliffe acknowledged that Kuperman’s religion “requires men to refrain from trimming t h e i r b e a rd s . ” B u t , h e ru l e d , prison officials have valid reasons for requiring that beards be kept to a maximum length of a quarterinch. “That length allows correctional officers to identify inmates easily, prevents inmates from hiding contraband and weapons in beards and minimizes the risk that an escaped inmate could quickly change his appearance after an escape,” McAuliffe wrote in his
ruling last Friday. Kuperman, 25, is serving 3 1/2 to 7 years behind bars for sexually molesting a minor in 2002. He is eligible for parole in January. He lost a court challenge last year over kosher diets. He claimed his constitutional rights were violated when he was removed from a kosher diet plan after twice being caught eating non-kosher foods. Corrections spokesman Jim Lyons said prison policy has since been changed to permit an inmate three lapses before withholding a
religious diet.
Advocacy group sues after ISP revoke first Muslim chaplain’s appointment CHICAGO (AP) — A Muslim advocacy group filed a federal discrimination lawsuit Monday over an Illinois State Police decision to revoke the appointment of the agency’s first Muslim chaplain. Kifah Mustapha, a Chicago-area
imam, was named a chaplain last December along with chaplains of other faiths. He underwent training, passed a background check and was issued state identification. But shortly after, the appointment was criticized by the Washington-based Investigative Project on Terrorism, which said Mustapha was a “radical fundraiser” and alleged he had links to Palestinian militant group Hamas. Mustapha hasn’t been charged with any crimes and denied
wrongdoing. According to the lawsuit filed on his behalf by the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Chicago office, Mustapha was then told by Illinois State Police that he had passed only a preliminary background check and another should have been conducted before the training. In June, the police department revoked his appointment, citing only information revealed during a background check.

In addition to the house there is an open front corrugated metal “loafing” style building to the back for parking or storage. The foundation is native stone and houses a large easily accessed basement. Call the auctioneer for a private viewing. Auction Terms: Seller confirmation of final bid is required. The successful bidder will enter into a Real Estate contract at the close of the auction. In addition a deposit (non-refundable earnest money) shall be made with the auctioneer with guaranteed funds in the amount of $5,000 which will be applied at closing. Additionally a 3% Buyers-Premium will be added to the final successful bid price. This will be added to the final bid and paid at closing. Final settlement will be in approximately 30 days from auction date upon delivery of a clear and merchantable deed.
