The GreenWell water saver contains and concentrates the water where it is needed during a tree’s critical root establishment phase.

Now is the time if you're thinking about planting a tree

By MELINDA MYERS For The Edge

W

hether planting a tree to add seasonal beauty, grow backyard fruit, provide a bit of shade, or reduce energy costs, it’s a big upfront investment. Make the most of your money spent by giving your tree its best chance at survival with proper planting and care.

Now is a great time to plant trees. Cooler air temperatures make it less stressful on newly planted trees and the gardeners planting them. Select a tree suited to the growing conditions. Make sure it tolerates the sunlight, soil and temperature extremes. Check the tag for the mature height and

4

spread. You’ll have a better-looking plant that always fits the space with minimal pruning. Plant it correctly to insure your tree thrives for many years to come. Dig a saucer shaped hole three to five times wider than the root ball. It should only be as deep as the distance from the root flare to the bottom of the root ball. The root flare, where the roots bend away from the trunk, should always be at or slightly above the soil surface. Set the tree in the hole, then peel back and cut away any burlap and wire cages. These can eventually constrict root growth. Roughen the sides of the hole and backfill with the existing soil. Water thoroughly to moisten the roots and surrounding soil. Continue to water thoroughly whenever the top few inches of soil are crumbly and moist. Proper watering, especially during the first two years, is critical for

September 28, 2017

establishing trees. Watering thoroughly as needed encourages deep roots and a more drought tolerant and pest resistant tree. Make the job easier with a watering aid like GreenWell water saver (greenwellwatersavers.com). This contains and concentrates the water where it is needed, acting as an insurance policy for your tree during the critical root establishment phase. It also holds the mulch in place and prevents weed whips and mowers from damaging your tree. Be sure to mulch the soil surface with a two- to three-inch layer of woodchips or shredded bark to conserve water, suppress weeds and improve the soil as it decomposes. Pull the mulch back from the trunk of the tree to avoid disease problems. Remove any tags that can eventually girdle the tree and prune out any broken or rubbing branches. Wait a year to fertilize

and two years, once the tree is established, for additional pruning. Continue providing tender loving care for at least the first two years. Make regular checkups, prune to create a strong structure, and keep grass, weeds and lawn care equipment away from the trunk throughout the lifetime of your tree. Your efforts will be rewarded with years of beauty, shade, and for some bushels of fresh fruit. Gardening expert Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening. Myers is the host of The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD series and the nationally syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment TV & radio segments. Myers is a columnist and cont ributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Myers’ website is www.melindamyers.com.

Illinois bicentennial children's art contest planned

Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories:

Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A year-long celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www. Illinois200.com. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, at 212 N. Sixth St. in Springfield, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history, making the library one of the nation’s leading institutions for genealogy and history research. Meanwhile, the museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative story-telling techniques to educate visitors. "Unlocked"

There's been a lot of talk about who should be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig puts aside his shaken martini. Orlando Bloom? Idris Elba? Damian Lewis? After watching the formulaic spy thriller "Unlocked," might we suggest Noomi Rapace? The actress, who rose to prominence in the original film adaptations of the Stieg Larsson novels — "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," ''The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" — now finds herself in a movie that could be called "The Girl at the Center of a Twisty-Turvy Global Terrorist Conspiracy Where No One Can Be Trusted, Even That Nice Guy Who Just Saved You From Killers." Rapace drinks only water and beds no one in "Unlocked ," but she exudes the same steely deadliness of 007, his intelligence and resourcefulness. She can shoot guns with both hands, do impressive martial arts moves, speak many languages, quietly slice you open with a knife and, in one scene, is absolutely lethal with, of all things, a folded beach chair. "Tell me the target," she says steadily and menacingly at one moment, as humorless and driven as Craig's Bond. "I want to know how you got this intel," she demands in another scene. The plot of "Unlocked" is hard to explain without a spreadsheet since it's a never-ending series of double-crosses in the global search for a Middle Eastern-led plan to use a biological weapon far worse than Ebola in London. British intelligence agents, the CIA and double agents for both agencies suddenly have an urgent need for Rapace, a former top interrogator who failed to stop a Paris terror bombing that killed two dozen people and still lives with the guilt. (Cue the montage of her working out her frustration by assaulting a heavy bag.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for violence and language." RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Beach Rats"

Is there anything lonelier than a secret? Frankie has a big one — he's attracted to men — and he can't seem to reconcile it with his own life. Writer and director Eliza Hittman's "Beach Rats " follows this conflicted Coney Island teenager around one summer, both languid and fraught, as he quietly wrestles with identity and desires, often dulling out the noise with the help of his dying father's prescription drugs. Played by the captivating newcomer Harris Dickinson, "Beach Rats" introduces Frankie as he browses a live video chat site, Brooklyn Boys. With his flat brimmed hat turned down to obscure his face, he looks dispassionately at the different windows, peering into the public-private lives of others. Some are performing for no one in particular, some are clothed and some are just waiting for that person who will agree to turn the computer screen off and meet up. Frankie stops on an older man who asks to see his face. "Pretty," he says to Frankie. "Thanks," says Frankie. But Frankie doesn't want to meet up with the older man. He doesn't really do that, he says. In the next scene, out in the world with his nearly identical heterosexual friends watching the fireworks on the boardwalk, a pretty girl spots him and begins to flirt. She goes home with him that night, and he does nothing with her either. The film runs on the slow escalation of his sexual development with both the random men he encounters online and meets up with under the cover of night and the girl, Simone (Madeline Weinstein), he dates in public. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Home Again"

It's a crime to waste Reese Witherspoon. You know what's worse? To waste Reese Witherspoon AND Candice Bergen. That lovely bit of casting alone — Witherspoon and Bergen as daughter and mom — should have been enough to lift "Home Again," a debut from writer-director Hallie MeyersShyer, into at least the ranks of fairly entertaining, harmless guilty-pleasure rom-coms. Instead, one is left marveling at how disappointingly inept it feels, from plot developments so obvious you see them coming 40 minutes ahead, to the gooey, lingering close-ups of characters laughing happily. What are they laughing about? Maybe there were lots of great private jokes flying around the set, because there aren't a lot of great ones in the script — save a few choice barbs from Bergen, and a very well-timed "Hamilton" joke. Witherspoon is Alice, a recently separated mother of two who's returned to Los Angeles from New York, escaping a difficult marriage to a scruffily charming music mogul (Michael Sheen.) Luckily, she can move right into her childhood home — her huge, beautiful childhood home, with linens so soft they're a topic of conversation, and a sizable guest house. Which is where the three guys come in. That would be Harry (Pico Alexander), his brother Teddy (Nat Wolff) and friend George (Jon Rudnitsky). They're budding 20-something filmmakers trying to get their movie produced, and they're a bit down on their luck. Of course, this movie's version of being down on one's luck is a little different than in the rest of the world. It's not just that these guys somehow waltz into high-level meetings with agents and producers. It's that everyone here looks like they've grown up in a Ralph Lauren catalog. Now, plenty of movies have been made about well-off people without real-world problems. It's not a crime. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some thematic and sexual material." RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"It"

Here's the good news: Pennywise is as creepy as ever in the new "It ." Thanks to a bigger budget and some improved special effects some 27 years later he really gets the chance to spook the kids of Derry, Maine. Bill Skarsgard (Son of Stellan, brother of Alexander) has infused Stephen King's killer clown with a pathological menace that's more reminiscent of Heath Ledger's Joker than Tim Curry's goofily sadistic take on the character in the 1990s miniseries adaptation. It helps that he's gotten an upgraded makeup job and a more antiquated (and scarier) costume of 17th century ruffs and muted whites. His teeth are bigger, his hair is less cartoonish, his eyes are more yellow and his mobility has become terrifyingly kinetic. Indeed, the new "It" goes all-out with the horror in Part One of the story, which is focused on the plight of a group of children in the 1980s who are haunted and hunted by a clown only they can see. Things that the miniseries only alluded to are depicted with merciless glee. Did you want to see a gang of bullies cutting a kid's stomach? "It" has that. Or witness a father looking lustily at his pre-teen daughter? "It" has that too. The bad news is that "It" still doesn't add up to much. Directed by Andy Muschietti, "It" is a deeply hateful film with the pretenses of being an edgy throwback genre mashup, a la "Stranger Things." With the R-rating, you do have to wonder who this "It" is really for — the now-grown kids of the '80s and '90s who were traumatized the first time around and can't get enough of their own nostalgia? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "violence/horror, bloody images, and for language." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 135 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"mother!"

Women give, men take and the Old Testament crashes into modern anxiety in director Darren Aronofsky's "mother! " It is an audacious, bold and fascinating fever dream of a film. It's allegory for, well, everything (the environment, marriage, art, spirituality, you name it!), that will challenge, distress and edify anyone who chooses to submit themselves to this creation for two hours. Like many Aronofsky endeavors, "mother!" is a film doesn't fit neatly into one genre. It starts out as one thing, a sort of psychological thriller and chamber drama about a couple living in a stately and remote home, and devolves gradually and then very suddenly into jaw-dropping chaos that almost seems to be testing the viewer. How much of Jennifer Lawrence's suffering can you take before covering your eyes? Or storming out of the theater? "Mother!" will get under your skin, that's a guarantee. This film begs for a viewing unencumbered by lengthy summarization. It's not that it defies explanation, what happens is fairly straightforward as far as nightmare logic is concerned. But the less you know the better. The setting is a grand Victorian home, plopped down in the middle of a field surrounded by trees. There lives a married couple (Lawrence and Javier Bardem), and it is peaceful and bright. It is an Eden dressed in Restoration Hardware linens that Lawrence's character (who is credited as "Mother" but never called that) has rebuilt for her husband (credited as Him) from wall to wall after a devastating fire burned it to the ground. She is earthy and quiet and perches her head to the wall to listen to the beating heart of the home in order to find the right shade of yellow for the space. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong disturbing violent content, some sexuality, nudity and language." RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"American Assasin"

Mitch Rapp is an action hero in the vein of Jack Ryan or John McClane: an impossibly tough and determined everyday guy out to save the world. Dylan O'Brien brings a youthful freshness to that archetype in "American Assassin ," his first leading-man role and the first big-screen adaptation of Vince Flynn's series of Rapp novels. The character is scrappy and outspoken, rebellious and single-minded, and a skilled wielder of all manner of weapons. But Rapp is first seen onscreen as a starry-eyed lover in Ibiza about to propose to his girlfriend. Their idyllic moment is ruined when terrorists storm the beach and Rapp's fiancée ends up among the dead. Flash forward 18 months and Rapp is a bearded recluse in Rhode Island, where he's been studying Arabic, mastering firearms and practicing martial arts. He plans to take out the terror kingpin responsible for the Ibiza attack. But his clandestine training catches the eye of a CIA recruiter (Sanaa Lathan), who brings Rapp in as a counterterrorism operative. From there, the story jumps around multiple international destinations as Rapp undergoes advanced training with the humorless Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) and onto a mission to recover a heap of stolen plutonium. Iranian forces intend to make a nuclear weapon to attack Israel. But an American mercenary and former student of Hurley's known as Ghost (Taylor Kitsch) is also involved, and he has his own ideas about how the plutonium should be used. RATED: R for "strong violence throughout, some torture, language and brief nudity." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Lawrence shines in "mother!" By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press Women give, men take and the Old Testament crashes into modern anxiety in director Darren Aronofsky's "mother! She is earthy and quiet and perches her head to the wall to listen to the beating heart of the home in order to find the right shade of yellow for the space. And then one night, a strange man (Ed Harris) comes to the door. Bardem's character, a famous poet suffering from extreme writer's block, invites him in, and the paradise Mother has so painstakingly created begins to crumble. The next day, the man's wife (a wickedly funny Michelle Pfeiffer) shows up too. Mother, while trying to be polite and a good hostess and still continue restoring her house, is also understandably bewildered by the sudden changes and her own husband's apparent disinterest in her objections to these

strangers occupying their home. For all the stress and anxiety that "mother!" will inspire in viewers, this section is really quite funny, human and relatable as Mother grapples with her absent husband and rude houseguests who drink their liquor and break their valuables and ask invasive questions about why she doesn't yet have children. It is a host's worst nightmare, and it only gets worse for poor Mother — the only sane person around who of course is predestined to be driven crazy by everyone else. Aronofsky has a special appreciation for hyperbolic depictions of female madness and suffering, whether it's an aging woman looking to lose a few pounds in "Requiem for a Dream," on a ballerina striving for perfection in "Black Swan." or a wife just

"American Assassin" could be better By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge In the bloody wake of "It" comes numerous R-rated hopefuls looking to turn the least likely September tide in their favor week in and week out. The latest secondplace filler - behind the Stephen King adaptation's record second weekend - is "American Assassin", a bloody action flick that offers little new to either the revenge plot or the counterterrorism fanatic storyline that has become rather popular in the decade since 9/11 and/or Season One of "Homeland". It's also another chance to see what star Michael Keaton might do with his great late act. Will this be a benchmark flick like "Birdman" or "Spotlight" that we'll be talking about at the Oscars next Spring? No, absolutely not.

Is it eye-catching and respectable like his turns in "The Founder" or "Spiderman Homecoming"? Barely adequate. It's not a particularly good film, but thankfully it's short and delivers plenty of shock violence for the people that like this sort of thing. "American Assassin" has its bona fides as a novel first and a series of novels to boot. Prior to his 2013 death from prostate cancer, author Vince Flynn had introduced the world to his anti-hero Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien) in more than a dozen books. The series has since been taken over by Kyle Mills and the sixteenth is due for publication imminently. Rapp is damaged goods. He's not as smart as Jack Ryan (depending on which version of that character you prefer; mine is certainly Harrison Ford's). He's not as buff as Jason Bourne (though

I bet neither is Matt Damon, not really). He's certainly no romantic vintage executioner of spycraft like any of the James Bonds. Instead, Rapp is a victim first and a motivated agent next. The film opens with a terrorist attack at a Spanish beachside resort in which his fiancée is killed thoughtlessly and right in front of him. With revenge as a powerful motivator, Rapp pours his hate, guilt, anger, and despondent sadness into a way to make the bad guys pay. He grows a beard and learns Arabic. He studies hand-to-hand combat and weapons just as thoroughly as he does the Quran and the teachings of Islam. He takes every step to appear the traitorous American rabble-rouser in order to infiltrate the cell that killed his lover. And once there he plots to take his pound of flesh.

While Rapp's goals are interesting, they're also mildly boring in a world where we accept radicalized terrorism as a way of life that periodically touches all of us with its grief. Where the movie takes this is, naturally, to the CIA. Rapp's actions aren't covert and he's being inaccurately tracked by the Agency as a homegrown jihadist that they in turn take under their wing to make operational. Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) hooks him up with the so-crazy-he-sounds-smart Stan Hurley (Keaton), a former SEAL who now trains rookies to be agents of shadow and death, dispensing street justice without having to be avowed of anyone. The whole thing is kind of hokey and moves way too fast. It's nice to see O'Brien back on screen after a bad injury on-set

September 28, 2017

sidelined him from acting for quite some time. I just wish this movie was a little better. The plot turns into a chase of one of Stan's former protégés (Taylor Kitsch) before he can assemble the parts from a plutonium bomb he's been stealing from all around the world. They use a pretty Iranian double (or triple?) agent (Shiva Negar) to help them. One piece of advice for any other potential franchises looking to break out: if you're going to cast two actors to play similar roles, with similar convictions, try to cast actors that don't look exactly alike. I know Kitsch and O'Brien are different people and even I mixed them up once in a while. "American Assassin" runs 112 minutes and is rated R for strong, bloody violence throughout, some torture, language, and brief nudity. I

Lee's church no longer carries his name

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — A Virginia church that Robert E. Lee belonged to after the Civil War will no longer be named after the Confederate general. Leaders of R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church voted Monday to return to the parish's original name of Grace Episcopal Church. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the 7-to-5 vote follows two years of heated debate, the hiring of a conflict resolution consultant and the departure of some members from the church in Lexington. Parish leaders first considered a name change in 2015 after white supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine people at a black

church in Charleston, South Carolina. The vote to remove Lee's name failed, but it divided the congregation. Then came the violence in C h a r l o t t e s v i l l e , Vi rg i n i a , l a s t m o n t h . White nationalists had rallied against the planned removal of a Lee statue. A group of counter protesters was rammed with a car. One woman died. "It's been a very divisive issue for two y e a r s , " t h e R e v. To m C r i t t e n d e n , t h e church's rector, told the newspaper. "But Charlottesville seems to have moved us to this point. Not that we have a different view of Lee historically in our church, but we have appreciation for our need to move on."

Lee moved to Lexington to lead Wa s h i n g t o n C o l l e g e a f t e r t h e C i v i l War ended in 1865. He is credited with saving the school, which is now named Washington and Lee University. At Grace Episcopal, Lee served in the church leadership as senior warden. He died in 1870. The church changed its name to R.E. Lee Memorial in 1903. In 2015, after the majority of the church's leadership voted to keep Lee's name, they hired a conflict resolution consultant at a cost of $16,000. The congregation had become divided and exhausted. Feelings were hurt. Two church leaders resigned in protest

of initial inaction. A c o m m i t t e e w a s f o r m e d . A re p o r t issued in April recommended restoring the original name while finding other ways to honor the general. Church leaders did not fully embrace the recommendation, voting instead to possibly take up the issue in the future. They reconsidered after Charlottesville. Congregant Doug Cumming said he hopes parish members will be able to come together and move forward. "My ancestors were very proud, brave and articulate Southerners," he said Monday, "and like Robert E. Lee, I think t h e y ' d b e v e r y p ro u d o v e r w h a t o u r church has done tonight."

The Rep announces its 2017-18 Studio Theatre season

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis has announced its 2017-2018 Studio Theatre season: Heisenberg, October 25-November 12, 2017, Faceless, January 17-February 4, 2018 and Caught, March 7-25, 2018. Heisenberg, by Simon Stephens and directed by The Rep’s Augustin Family Artistic D i re c t o r S t e v e n Wo o l f , o p e n s the season. A serendipitous encounter at a London train station propels two very different people into a shared orbit. Georgie is crass, deeply odd and impulsive. On a whim, she kisses the neck of Alex, a much older and more subdued man who is sitting by himself. In the unexpected conversations

that follow, Georgie and Alex discover shared passions amidst the uncertainty of personal connection. This life-affirming play uncovers the extraordinary in the everyday. Next up is Faceless, by Selina Filligner and directed by BJ Jones. Two young women face off in a courtroom, locked in a battle of wills and theologies. Susie Glenn, 18, is on trial. Radicalized online into planning acts of terrorism, she’s zealously committed to her cause. Her p ro s e c u t o r, C l a i re F a t h i , i s a Harvard-educated Muslim woman who lives the faith that Susie professes to understand. Their edgy exchanges create a propulsive, escalating tension that makes this brilliantly topical play a true legal thriller. The Studio Theatre series concludes with Caught, by Christopher Chen and directed by The Rep’s associate artistic director Seth Gordon. In the era of “fake news,” Caught creates a bracingly unique experience that will keep you wondering what’s real and what’s theatre.

An art exhibition by a Chinese dissident is the first phase of a multi-layered puzzle, which presents the audience with an ever-changing set of rules. Chen’s piece deftly examines the blurred lines between truth and artifice, both in the theatre and in life. Season ticket packages for The Rep’s 2017-2018 Studio Theatre series are on sale now. By purchasing season tickets, subscribers can save substantially over the cost of purchasing individual show tickets and enjoy exclusive benefits. Studio Theatre subscription packages range from $108-$167 for all three shows. Studio Theatre single tickets will go on sale in October. For more information about The Rep’s 2017-2018 season or to purchase subscriptions, visit repstl.org, call The Rep Box Office at 314-968-4925 or drop by the box office in person at t h e L o re t t o - H i l t o n C e n t e r f o r Performing Arts, 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves.

Lively rock and rollers the Old '97s play Roots N Blues on Friday, Sept. 29.

For The Edge Throughout the weekend of September 29 through October 1, the air around Stephens Lake Park near downtown Columbia will be filled with the sweet, smokey aroma of slow-cooked barbecue and the sounds of hot amps and great music as one of Columbia's favorite parties, the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival, celebrates its 11th year. This annual event is part music festival, part art festival and part food festival. Roots N Blues combines over 30 live performances from a wide variety of musical genres - blues, soul, rock and roll, country, bluegrass and nearly everything in between - across two main stages over the course of three days and nights. Throughout the nearly 50-acre festival footprint, art installations will adorn every element of the fest. There also will be a fleet of food trucks and vendors lined up to quell attendees' need for mouth-watering barbecue and a variety of other fare. Columbia's local craft breweries will be on hand to quench thirsts as well. "We're very excited about Roots N Blues N BBQ 2017," says Richard King, one of the fest organizers and president of Thumper Entertainment. It's been a long time building up to the festival for King as he and his crew have spent a year planning and coordinating to bring it all together. "It's been a lot of work, but now that it's nearly here, we can hardly wait for everyone to come and enjoy the great music, food and fun. We have an amazing line-up of artists and it's going to be a phenomenal time." The 2017 festival features some of the biggest names in roots music. Headliners include Ryan Adams, Leon Bridges, Band of Horses, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Gary Clark, Jr., Booker T's Stax Revue, Pokey LaFarge, Amanda Shires, Margo Price, Nikki Lane, The Mavericks and Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and music gets underway at 5:00 p.m. with simultaneous performances by Paul Webber and the Scrappers on Missouri Lottery Stage and Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys on the Great Southern Bank

Stage. From there, the start times are staggered at the two stages as attendees can enjoy the sounds of the Suffers, Lee Fields and the Expressions and the Old '97s before Booker T's Stax Revue and Gary Clark, Jr. close out the night with sets beginning at 8:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., respectively. O n S a t u rd a y, g a t e s o p e n a t 1 0 : 3 0 a . m . a n d t h e entertainment begins at 11:15 a.m. with a performance by the Aina Cook Band (winner of the King of the Roots contest) followed by Kent Burnside and the Flood Brothers. The afternoon unfolds with sets by the Bel Airs, the Hooten Hallers, Nikki Hill, Untamed Youth, Marshall Crenshaw, the Bottle Rockets, Nikki Lane, and the Steeldrivers. The music continues throughout the evening with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Pokey LaFarge, and the Mavericks as Band of Horses and Leon Bridges bring the evening to its natural crescendo. The weekend comes to a head on Sunday with the Norm Ruebling Band and the Broadway Blues starting off the day's entertainment with sets beginning at 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively. Chump Change, the Fairfield Four, Music Maker Blues Revue and Amanda Shires round out the afternoon's performances. Ana Popovic, Emmylou Harris, and Margo Price will then perform before John Prine and Ryan Adams close out the annual festival Sunday night. New for 2017, vendors at Roots N Blues will no longer be accepting cash, debit or credit cards. The festival organizers have adopted a cash-free set up, which has been well-tested and successful at other festivals. Attendees' festival wristband will now double as their ticket for admission and cash-less digital wallet, making for faster transaction times, shorter lines and less risk of loosing wallets. With the cash-less system, attendees will need to preload, or "top-up," their cashless accounts, similar to using a preloaded debit card. Once a purchase is made, the funds will automatically be deducted from the account balance, and "Top-Up" stations will be located around the festival grounds should anyone run out of credit and

need to reload their account. Any remaining credit will be refunded after the close of the weekend. More details on the new cashless system, including how it works and how to "top-up" your account, can be found on the festival's website at www.rootsnbluesnbbq.com/cashlesspayments/. In addition to the music and festivities, Roots N Blues hosts the Betsy Farris Memorial Half-Marathon and 10k fun run. The run, honoring one of the festival's founders and greatest proponents of getting fit and staying healthy, will take place on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 30. The races begin at 7 a.m. and wind through Columbia's urban trails, its historic downtown, the beautiful University of Missouri campus and concludes at Stephens Lake Park. All racers will enjoy live music along the route and will receive a commemorative medal, a collector's t-shirt, free barbecue and beer and a discount voucher to use when purchasing festival tickets. For more details about the race, or to sign up, visit the "Race" page on the festival's website. Throughout the weekend, several transportation options will be available. The festival provides free shuttle service to and from downtown parking lots and garages to the festival entrance for all attendees. GoCOMO (Columbia's city buses) also runs for free all over Columbia during the festival weekend. All GoCOMO buses are ADA accessible. There will be free bicycle parking and ADA accessible parking at the entrance as well. To check out the full line up of performers, the stage schedule and to order passes for the 2017 festival, please visit www.RootsNBluesNBBQ.com. Daily tickets and weekend passes also are available. Additional information about the fest's new cashless payment system also is available on the Roots N Blues website as well. Visitors interested in attending the festival can find information on lodging, award-winning dining options, additional events, attractions and things to do around Columbia by heading to the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) website at www.VisitColumbiaMO. com. Or, they can call the CVB at 1-800-652-0987.

Tuning in Great Rivers Choral Society announces schedule

The Great Rivers Choral Society (GRCS), an adult choir of mixed voices serving the Riverbend area of Southern Illinois, is pleased to announce the kickoff of the 20172018 season. “We’re really excited about the upcoming season,” said Dr. Ronald Abraham, GRCS Music Director. “We’ll be tackling new works by Randall Stroope and René Clausen as well as some familiar pop arrangements and more traditional choral music – and some old favorites that long-time audience members may recognize.” The concert series begins in the fall (Oct. 7, 14-15) with “Beginnings: Seasons, Love and Life,” presenting some of the finest choral works from the eighteenth century to modern composers creating today. The concert will feature selections from Haydn's Creation and Randall Thompson's glorious 'Alleluia" as well as newer works. In December, the choir will be joined by a Brass Ensemble to help celebrate the Holiday Season. Music will include "Carols for Brass and Choir” and selections from Bach's triumphant "Christmas Oratorio.” And the Spring Finale will celebrate the approaching summer with “Boys of Summer: Beach Boys, Beatles, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.” All concerts are free to the public, with a free-will offering taken during the performances. “We’re trying some new things this year,” Dr. Abraham said, “and the choir is coming in with renewed energy. For example, we

held four Summer Sings in Alton and invited audience members to sing with us. It was a great way to get to know the community and find new members who are looking to join their voices in song.” Dr. Abraham noted that anyone interested in joining the Great Rivers Choral Society may contact him at (618) 917-0042 for an audition. 99 Hops House in Maryland Heights By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Recently I got to attend the Iron Maiden/ Ghost concert at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St. Louis and before you go see a good show there’s something you have to do, you gotta eat. Myself, my buddy Dave and my cousin Brandon decided to check out a place close to the concert venue to prepare for rocking out so we hit up 99 Hops House inside Hollywood Casino. My one knock on going to concerts there is the lack of restaurants close to the amphitheatre. I’m not a fan of $20 hot dog night at the concert, so 99 Hops House was perfect with its proximity to the main event. I was also intrigued to check out their beer selections. The restaurant is located inside the casino at 777 Casino Dr. in Maryland Heights. Obviously the name gives it away, they offer 99 different beer selections, so for a craft beer aficionado like myself and my two cohorts I thought it would be good. There is a free parking garage available attached to the casino that was nice and once you enter you go to the ground floor and find the restaurant on the left directly before entering the gaming area. It’s huge. You walk in and see a long bar to the right with a lot of smaller tables sprinkled around it. As you walk back though you go through an opening into an elongated area where there are 40 to 50 more tables. We saw plenty of Iron Maiden T-shirts in the restaurant, so obviously a lot of concert goers had the same idea. We sat up shop in the back area and got started with some appetizers. I ordered the 99 Hops brisket nachos and the loaded tater tots. I’ll start with the loaded tots. I’m a big tater tot fan. I’ve conveyed this before because they remind me of being a kid. You can’t beat a good tot and they weren’t bad at 99 Hops House. They were simply crispy tots smothered in an Amber Pale Ale cheese sauce, crumbled applewood smoked bacon, scallions and sour cream. The tots had a good crispy taste, but weren’t overcooked like I’ve found at some places and of course the bacon added to the

experience. The cheese sauce was a great touch, too. It was a good starter. The nachos were top notch also. They were massive, consisting of tortilla chips blanketed in the Amber Pale Ale cheese sauce, sour cream, salsa rojo, guacamole, shredded lettuce and tender beef brisket. You can also get pulled pork instead of brisket. The most intriguing prize on the nachos were a few crispy stuffed jalapeno poppers mixed in to put it over the top. The poppers were my favorite part of the nachos. I’d never seen those included on nachos before and gave them a unique twist. We all three scarfed down the nachos with pleasure. They were good and didn’t get too soggy under the plethora of ingredients. I questioned how the brisket would be, but it was tender and had a great taste also. Now it was on to the main courses. Dave went with the 99 Hops mac and cheese with pulled pork, while Brandon ordered the Cubano sandwich and French fries and I picked the turkey avocado club with onion rings. Dave’s mac and cheese was good as he let me pilfer a couple of bites. It was served with that same Amber Pale Ale cheese sauce and topped off with bread crumbs. It was a huge

bowl and the pulled pork added a nice touch. The cheese was pretty creamy to finish off a strong flavor. Brandon’s Cubano consisted of slow roasted pork loin, shaved ham, pickles, swiss cheese and house mustard on a grilled, pressed hoagie bun. He was pretty indifferent on his synopsis. It was good but not great. I would probably echo that same sentiment for my assessment of my turkey avocado club. With smoked turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce and tomato on a croissant, it was good but there was nothing special about it. The turkey and avocado were the overwhelming flavors in the sandwich, which is what I was expecting, but the avocado was a little chintzy and I was hoping for a little more there. As for the beer, I was a little disappointed for 99 different choices for me, because it was pretty pedestrian. There actually weren’t a lot of things I hadn’t had before. I went with the Shiphead ginger wheat by Logboat Brewing out of Columbia, Mo. and the Louisville lager from Goodwood Brewing of Louisville. Both were simple and light in taste and not very memorable. The ginger wheat beer was weak on ginger taste and left something to be desired. The remainder of the menu was a little

shoddy. There was the smoked brisket cheesesteak sandwich that caught my eye, brisket street tacos, the baby back ribs and the berry spring salad with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and mandarin oranges over a bed of spinach with walnuts and goat cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. To check out the whole menu and the beer selections visit www.hollywoodcasinostlouis. com/Dining/99-Hops-House. My real problem with 99 Hops House came with the service. We showed up with plenty of time to get to the concert early and get ourselves situated, but were at the restaurant for an hour and a half. They weren’t overly busy when we arrived, but it took quite a while for our food to arrive and then when we got our bills our server had them all jacked up. Our food was on the wrong checks and the waiter was really confused when trying to get the problems fixed. It took a half an hour to get our checks corrected and we were nearly late to the concert. While the food was decent, the rest of the experience left something to be desired. It’s up to you if you’ve got the time and want to check 99 Hops House out, but I’d probably run to the hills and go somewhere else when you gotta eat.
