T

he SIUE Arts & Issues program brings Joanne Shenandoah, one of America’s most celebrated Native American musicians, to its stage on Oct. 7. Shenandoah will be performing at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability on the SIUE campus.

Shenandoah has been nominated three times for a Grammy and won one in 2006 for her work on the album “Sacred Ground.” She’s won in total over 40 music awards, including 14 Native American Music awards, for her 18 recordings. Her music ranges from acapella to full symphony and has been heard on hundreds of documentaries, films and music videos. Her original compositions combined with a striking voice enable her to embellish the ancient songs of the Iroquois using a blend of traditional and contemporary instrumentation. Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist for The Band, noted that Shenandoah “...weaves you into a trance with her beautiful Iroquois chants and wraps her voice around you like a warm blanket on a cool winter's night.” “Joanne Shenandoah is one of the finest attributes to Native American Music and Culture,” Neil Young stated about Shenandoah on her website. She is also a humanitarian and considered an “Ambassador of Peace” bringing audiences together from all over the world - every race, religion and age. As a peace advocate, Shenandoah has captured the hearts of audiences all over the world. She has received multiple awards and praise for her work to promote universal peace and understanding, and she is a direct descendant of the famed “Chief Shenandoah” who is noted to have been given a “Peace Medal” by George Washington and established Hamilton College in Clinton, NY (The Oneida Academy). Shenandoah is a founding board member of the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge, a nonprofit higher learning educational facility that is based on Iroquois principles. In addition, Shenandoah served as Co-Chair for the Attorney General’s National Task Force of Children Exposed to Violence for the Department of Justice in 2014. She has performed for noted leaders such as the Dali Lama, Nelson Mandela, Huston Smith, and Mikhail Gorbachev, and has performed at prestigious events at

venues such as St. Peter’s Basilica, The White House, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Bethlehem Fine Arts Center, Crystal Bridges Museum, Smithsonian museums, The Ordway Theater, Hummingbird Centre, Toronto Skydome, The Parliament of the Worlds Religions, (Africa, Spain and Australia). She also performed at Woodstock in 1994 as well as at five presidential inaugurations. Tickets for Shenandoah and upcoming Arts & Issues tickets performances can be ordered on-line at artsandissues.com or in-person at the Morris University Center (MUC) Welcome Desk. The Natya Dance Theater will perform at the Celebration of Girl Leaders event on Oct. 28.

Celebration of Girl Leaders planned

For The Edge On October 28th the Milaan Foundation will host its annual gala at the Gloria Dei Center, located on the campus of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Ill.. The event, “Celebration of Girl Leaders,” will highlight the stories of grassroots adolescent girls in India working to transform their communities by completing a twoyear fellowship program, The Girl Icon Fellowship Program. Started in 2015, by Co-founders Alyssa Newlon and Dhirendra Pratap Singh, the Milaan Foundation has a mission to Inspire, Nurture and Amplify the voices of girl leaders as empowered agents of change in their communities and the world. “We’re thrilled that the Milaan Foundation opted to host their gala in our beautiful Gloria Dei Center,” says Woodlands Academy head of school Meg Steele. “Clearly, their mission of empowering young women in India to be agents of change in their communities very closely aligns with the work we do with our students in and out of the classroom.” The evening will include a message from Keynote Speaker Raka Ray, Ph.D., a professor at the

4

University of California, Berkeley and other inspirational advocates of change working to build a world of empowered girl leaders. The fare will include delicious dishes from India and an Indian dance performance by the non-profit Natya Dance Theater. “ Wo o d l a n d s A c a d e m y h a s empowered many girls and continues to do so at their school. We a re t h r i l l e d t o c e l e b r a t e inspirational girl leaders in Chicago, where we planted our roots, and already have a strong community of Girl Icon supporters and we’re looking forward to connecting with local youth leaders as we move forward.” says Milaan Foundation Co-founder Alyssa Newlon. “We were so excited when Loren Ketelsen, our Intern in Chicago and a 2013 graduate of Woodlands introduced us to the beautiful Gloria Dei Center as a possibility for our gala. Finding a venue that was meaningful to our mission makes the celebration all the more powerful as we prepare to scale from 100 Girl Icons, 2,000 Girl Icon Peers to 500 Girl Icons, 10,000 Girl Icon Peers in 2018” T h i s y e a r, t h e c e l e b r a t i o n represents both the progress of the Girl Icons in India as well as the larger community supporting the

organization in the US. Girl Icons is proud to have supporters across the US acting as ambassadors for the program. Girl Icon Ambassador Shellan Saling, a University of California, Davis student says, “Woodlands Academy and Milaan Foundation empower girls in similar ways, not just in their respective locations, but throughout the world. The excitement continues to grow each day as we get ready to welcome many individuals from all over the world to celebrate the common message of empowering girls.” Tickets to this charity community event cost $75 per person with discounts for couples and youth. All the proceeds will go towards Milaan Foundation’s Girl Icon Program. For tickets go to Milaan TicketTailor or GirlIcon.org/Events. About Milaan Foundation Milaan Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, started in 2015, with the mission to inspire, nurture and amplify the voices of girl leaders as empowered agents of change in their communities and the world. The foundation’s flagship program the Girl Icon Fellowship Program has received almost 15,000 applications from girls (ages 12 - 18 years) and currently

works with 100 Girl Icon Fellows and 2,000 Peer Girl Icons. One in 100 girls in rural India drops out of school before the twelfth grade. With 1 in 100 girls dropping out in rural India before completing 12th grade, the foundation leaderships finds it imperative to work from a grassroots level upwards by activating girl leaders as change agents in their own community. Through these grassroots leaders, the Girl Icon Fellowship program works over a 2 year period with the fellows to transform communities and address barriers to equality in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, India. The fellowship program begins with a leadership and development training and continues on over the two years as the fellows complete social action projects in their own communities. By activating these inspirational leaders, Milaan Foundation’s efforts work to tackle early child marriage, secondary school drop-out, unpaid labor, and reproductive health and hygiene issues. Lincoln Presidential Library obtains Illinois family’s documents For The Edge

T

he Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has obtained an amazing trove of documents that trace one southern Illinois family’s history, from arriving in America to surviving fires and floods to suffering tragic losses in war.

The centerpiece of the collection is a rare 1796 atlas that family patriarch Samuel Spence, a sea captain originally from Scotland, brought with him to Illinois in 1838. The atlas is inscribed with family history and notes, and much of it has been hand colored. The collection also includes about 800 manuscripts and hundreds of photographs and

newspaper clippings about the family and the communities around them – Olmsted, Mound City, Cairo and more. “The Spence family has a colorful history, but what really sets this collection apart is its incredible detail. Anyone studying it will get an in-depth picture of daily life in southern Illinois from the state’s early days to the modern era,” said Alan Lowe, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “Everyone with an interest in Illinois history owes the Spence family a debt of gratitude.” When the Spences arrived in 1838, they settled on the Ohio River just north of its confluence with the Mississippi, near today’s town of Olmsted. A journal recounts the misery

of their early years. “I am very much dissatisfied with this place. No money and am unable to go to work on account of the family’s sickness. No kind of hearty victuals to be had for love or money,” wrote one of the Spences. Eventually the family prospered. Documents list purchases at the store they ran (everything from peas and beans to scissors and a “molasses faucet”) and their donation of land to monks founding a priory. Later photos and diplomas show family trips and young women studying to be secretaries and

nurses. Later still, two adventurous Spence brothers became airmail pilots and then sailors traveling the world. Both died during World War II when the merchant ships on which they served were torpedoed by German submarines. The collection also includes their sister ’s many anguished letters asking officials for information. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, at 212 N. Sixth St. in Springfield, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-

fashioned scholarship and modern technology. It also serves as the state historical library. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln material, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to other aspects of Illinois history. Meanwhile, the museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative storytelling techniques to educate visitors. For more information, visit www.presidentlincoln.illinois. gov or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Illinois bicentennial children's art contest planned

Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high

Meeting with Graham changed McQueen's life By TIM FUNK The Charlotte Observer Actor Steve McQueen, who personified cool during his nearly two decades as a Hollywood superstar, retreated from the glamor and excesses of the movie scene late in his short life and embraced Christianity. When he died at age 50, McQueen was clutching a Bible — one given to him by Billy Graham. In fact, it was Graham’s personal Bible, the one he preached from at crusades. The Charlotte-born evangelist had handed it to the actor, then gravely ill with cancer, during a private meeting Nov. 3, 1980 — just four days before McQueen died after surgery

in Mexico. Nearly 37 years later, the story of Steve McQueen’s faith journey is finally about to be told on the big screen — the medium that made him internationally famous as the action hero in hits such as “Bullitt” and “The Great Escape.” And though Billy Graham, now 98 and living in his mountain-top Montreat home, doesn’t speak or appear in person in “Steve McQueen: American Icon,” the preacher and his Bible play a major role in its final minutes. The faith-based documentary feature film will be shown at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at theaters in Charlotte and around the country. The host for this one-night event will be Greg Laurie, a lifelong McQueen fan and the pastor of one of America’s biggest

megachurches, Harvest Christian Fellowship in southern California. Much of the drama in the new film comes late: Viewers are told that McQueen took along the Graham Bible — with a prayerful note from the evangelist on an inside page — when he traveled to Juarez, Mexico, for the operation to remove a tumor. The actor died of a heart attack shortly afterward, on Nov. 7, 1980. And when Grady Ragsdale, the manager of McQueen’s ranch in California, went to retrieve the body, he pulled the sheet back and found that McQueen had died clutching the Bible to his chest. Laurie puts it this way in the film: “He was holding on to the Bible of Billy Graham as he

entered eternity.” In an 1980 interview with the Asheville Citizen not long after McQueen’s death, Graham called his meeting with the actor “one of the most heartwarming stories of my ministry. I think it illustrates how lonely most well-known people are, how guarded they must live and how they really are searching for something. Steve McQueen found what he was searching for.” The film — “Steve McQueen: American Icon” — also features interviews with actor Mel Gibson, other actors who worked with McQueen, a renowned stuntman, pilots who taught McQueen how to fly, his pastor, his biographer and the last of his three wives, model Barbara Minty McQueen.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Home Again"

It's a crime to waste Reese Witherspoon. You know what's worse? To waste Reese Witherspoon AND Candice Bergen. That lovely bit of casting alone — Witherspoon and Bergen as daughter and mom — should have been enough to lift "Home Again," a debut from writer-director Hallie MeyersShyer, into at least the ranks of fairly entertaining, harmless guilty-pleasure rom-coms. Instead, one is left marveling at how disappointingly inept it feels, from plot developments so obvious you see them coming 40 minutes ahead, to the gooey, lingering close-ups of characters laughing happily. What are they laughing about? Maybe there were lots of great private jokes flying around the set, because there aren't a lot of great ones in the script — save a few choice barbs from Bergen, and a very well-timed "Hamilton" joke. Witherspoon is Alice, a recently separated mother of two who's returned to Los Angeles from New York, escaping a difficult marriage to a scruffily charming music mogul (Michael Sheen.) Luckily, she can move right into her childhood home — her huge, beautiful childhood home, with linens so soft they're a topic of conversation, and a sizable guest house. Which is where the three guys come in. That would be Harry (Pico Alexander), his brother Teddy (Nat Wolff) and friend George (Jon Rudnitsky). They're budding 20-something filmmakers trying to get their movie produced, and they're a bit down on their luck. Of course, this movie's version of being down on one's luck is a little different than in the rest of the world. It's not just that these guys somehow waltz into high-level meetings with agents and producers. It's that everyone here looks like they've grown up in a Ralph Lauren catalog. Now, plenty of movies have been made about well-off people without real-world problems. It's not a crime. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some thematic and sexual material." RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"It"

Here's the good news: Pennywise is as creepy as ever in the new "It ." Thanks to a bigger budget and some improved special effects some 27 years later he really gets the chance to spook the kids of Derry, Maine. Bill Skarsgard (Son of Stellan, brother of Alexander) has infused Stephen King's killer clown with a pathological menace that's more reminiscent of Heath Ledger's Joker than Tim Curry's goofily sadistic take on the character in the 1990s miniseries adaptation. It helps that he's gotten an upgraded makeup job and a more antiquated (and scarier) costume of 17th century ruffs and muted whites. His teeth are bigger, his hair is less cartoonish, his eyes are more yellow and his mobility has become terrifyingly kinetic. Indeed, the new "It" goes all-out with the horror in Part One of the story, which is focused on the plight of a group of children in the 1980s who are haunted and hunted by a clown only they can see. Things that the miniseries only alluded to are depicted with merciless glee. Did you want to see a gang of bullies cutting a kid's stomach? "It" has that. Or witness a father looking lustily at his pre-teen daughter? "It" has that too. The bad news is that "It" still doesn't add up to much. Directed by Andy Muschietti, "It" is a deeply hateful film with the pretenses of being an edgy throwback genre mashup, a la "Stranger Things." With the R-rating, you do have to wonder who this "It" is really for — the now-grown kids of the '80s and '90s who were traumatized the first time around and can't get enough of their own nostalgia? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "violence/horror, bloody images, and for language." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 135 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"mother"

Women give, men take and the Old Testament crashes into modern anxiety in director Darren Aronofsky's "mother! " It is an audacious, bold and fascinating fever dream of a film. It's allegory for, well, everything (the environment, marriage, art, spirituality, you name it!), that will challenge, distress and edify anyone who chooses to submit themselves to this creation for two hours. Like many Aronofsky endeavors, "mother!" is a film doesn't fit neatly into one genre. It starts out as one thing, a sort of psychological thriller and chamber drama about a couple living in a stately and remote home, and devolves gradually and then very suddenly into jaw-dropping chaos that almost seems to be testing the viewer. How much of Jennifer Lawrence's suffering can you take before covering your eyes? Or storming out of the theater? "Mother!" will get under your skin, that's a guarantee. This film begs for a viewing unencumbered by lengthy summarization. It's not that it defies explanation, what happens is fairly straightforward as far as nightmare logic is concerned. But the less you know the better. The setting is a grand Victorian home, plopped down in the middle of a field surrounded by trees. There lives a married couple (Lawrence and Javier Bardem), and it is peaceful and bright. It is an Eden dressed in Restoration Hardware linens that Lawrence's character (who is credited as "Mother" but never called that) has rebuilt for her husband (credited as Him) from wall to wall after a devastating fire burned it to the ground. She is earthy and quiet and perches her head to the wall to listen to the beating heart of the home in order to find the right shade of yellow for the space. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong disturbing violent content, some sexuality, nudity and language." RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"American Assasin"

Mitch Rapp is an action hero in the vein of Jack Ryan or John McClane: an impossibly tough and determined everyday guy out to save the world. Dylan O'Brien brings a youthful freshness to that archetype in "American Assassin ," his first leading-man role and the first big-screen adaptation of Vince Flynn's series of Rapp novels. The character is scrappy and outspoken, rebellious and single-minded, and a skilled wielder of all manner of weapons. But Rapp is first seen onscreen as a starry-eyed lover in Ibiza about to propose to his girlfriend. Their idyllic moment is ruined when terrorists storm the beach and Rapp's fiancée ends up among the dead. Flash forward 18 months and Rapp is a bearded recluse in Rhode Island, where he's been studying Arabic, mastering firearms and practicing martial arts. He plans to take out the terror kingpin responsible for the Ibiza attack. But his clandestine training catches the eye of a CIA recruiter (Sanaa Lathan), who brings Rapp in as a counterterrorism operative. From there, the story jumps around multiple international destinations as Rapp undergoes advanced training with the humorless Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) and onto a mission to recover a heap of stolen plutonium. Iranian forces intend to make a nuclear weapon to attack Israel. But an American mercenary and former student of Hurley's known as Ghost (Taylor Kitsch) is also involved, and he has his own ideas about how the plutonium should be used. RATED: R for "strong violence throughout, some torture, language and brief nudity." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Kingsman: The Golden Circle"

In the first film about a secret spy group known as Kingsman, we learned they are well-dressed, courtly and perfectly groomed. But by the second film, there's a decidedly ungentlemanly whiff about them — of desperation. "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" comes three years after the first leg in the Matthew Vaughn-directed franchise — and it bodes poorly for the expected third. This sequel is an overlong, labored affair that lacks the fizz of its predecessor. Even an insane cameo by Elton John — in his full feather and rhinestone glory — can't save it. For anyone needing a refresher, the Kingsman movies are based on a series of comic books by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons that centers on British upper crust spies who combine a fondness for bespoke tailoring with the lethality of James Bond. They hang out in a Saville Row tailor shop, sip tea, are fitted for 007-like gadgets and save the world in secret. The first film introduced the working class Eggsy (Taron Egerton) as a potential recruit who is championed by Kingsman leader Colin Firth, despite the younger man's crudeness and ill-breeding. He proved his mettle by foiling a diabolical plan hatched by a billionaire internet entrepreneur played by Samuel L. Jackson, whose weird lisp outlasted its welcome. The charm of the first film was the way it straddled the line between celebrating spy movies and mocking them. It had a winking, self-aware humor. Plus, the action sequences were absolutely stunning, with cameras doing 360-degree turns, cool slo-mos and acrobatic fight choreography. The humor has worn off by the second, even if the camerawork is still spectacular. The music is very good, too, from the use of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" to making John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" into a stirring anthem. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and language." RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Battle of the Sexes"

Can an inspirational movie also be a drag? That's the distinct feeling one can't shake walking out of "Battle of the Sexes ," a fictionalized rendering of the 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old Billie Jean King and 55-yearold hustler Bobby Riggs and the circumstances surrounding it. At stake is the opportunity for women in tennis to even get equal pay consideration, the reputation of a player who could have just stayed in her lane and the perceptions of society at large and, perhaps most importantly, the men in power. "I'm going to be the best," says Emma Stone playing Billie Jean. "That way I can really change things." Fast forward 44 years: We're still here, aren't we? "Battle of the Sexes," directed by the "Little Miss Sunshine" team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and written by Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire"), is on the whole a fairly standard, if unexceptional film that has two major things going for it: Emma Stone and timeliness. The story begins by establishing Billie Jean as the best female player in the world — celebrated and adored everywhere she goes — but still not worthy of even half of the prize money top male tennis players were getting in 1972. A well-cast Stone, fresh off her Oscar win for playing an aspiring actress in "La La Land," transforms into the quiet, driven and sharp tennis pro with the help of a dye job and wire rim glasses. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for some sexual content and partial nudity." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

New "Kingsman" installment misses the mark By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge O k a y. F i r s t t h e r e i s s o m e good news on the movie-going front. "It" continues to dominate box office receipts and has now parlayed it's opening two weeks (or, as most film now consider that, lifetime) into becoming the highest-grossing horror film of all time and the fifth highestgrossing movie of the year. I am still in a state of stunned disbelief, but loved that movie so I totally applaud Warner Bros. and their recent efforts toward being the #1 studio of the year. They have a realistic outside chance. Also, despite the fact that this September is still so very different from every other September, we have a couple of dandy pictures on the horizon rolling out in limited release this weekend in the form of "Battle

o f t h e S e x e s " a n d " Vi c t o r i a & Abdul". Both are fictionalized accounts of real events (a tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King and a relationship between Britain's Queen Victoria and a favored Indian servant of her court). I can't wait to see both and tell you about them soon. Unfortunately, this week I had to trade my soul for something a little more middle-of-theroad, a tepid sequel to the 2014 hit "Kingsman", this one subtitled "The Golden Circle". So, knowing how much I love sequels - and inferior sequels at that - read on. Oh, and it's got a ridiculous running time for an action-comedy! When "Kingsman: The Secret Service" debuted on Valentine's Day/President's Day Weekend three years ago, it was a success. Still, it faced some major

competition. The Oscars that year were only a week or two away and most casual filmgoers were still trying to catch up to e v e n t u a l B e s t P i c t u re w i n n e r "12 Years a Slave" or, hopefully, some of the better films that were awarded in the acting categories ("Dallas Buyers Club", "Blue Jasmine"). Moreover, it opened against "Fifty Shades of Grey", a movie that I still fail to understand the point of. But I am a man and some things men don't have to understand. We were i n t ro d u c e d t o t h e s p y a g e n c y Kingsman and their gentlemanly agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth), who returns from the dead in this movie due to some unclever storytelling and that old trope, amnesia. The first film helped develop the world of the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic on which it's based and

Dench continues to learn TORONTO (AP) — Judi Dench is not tired. "I've had one of those pep-up drinks," Dench, beaming as she sits down for a recent interview. "I feel rather sparky." C a ff e i n a t e d o r n o t , D e n c h , 82, remains fully energized. As Stephen Frears, the director of her latest film, "Victoria & Abdul," marvels: "She's the biggest female star in Britain" — a statement that takes a moment to realize how true it is. "It's phenomenal at her age." Dench's eyesight had deteriorated in recent years due to macular degeneration, so scripts need to be read to her. But that's done little to slow her down or dim her ferocious, mischievous intelligence. On her right wrist is a tattoo of her personal motto, "Carpe Diem" ("Seize the Day"). She had it done for her 81st birthday. "The process of learning is quite difficult," she says of her eyes. "I can do it. I just have to adjust in a different way. You do what you

can, don't you?" It's a spirit of undaunted inquisitiveness that Dench shares with her latest character, Queen Victoria. In Frears' film, which Focus Features will open in limited release Friday, Dench returns to the monarch she

introduced us to young Eggsy ( Ta r o n E g e r t o n ) , t h e i r n e w recruit. Egerton may have had a star moment, but I fail to recall anything else he's done besides being the mournful gorilla kid in "Sing". What more could they have to show us? In "The Golden Circle", d i r e c t o r M a t t h e w Va u g h n aims to go back to the well by giving us the characters we liked before, including gadgeteer Mark Strong, and pack a bloated film with a whole new raison d'être. After a drug cartel maniac (Julianne Moore, channeling nostalgia that fails to warm even my heart), synthesizes a serum to kill or control the whole world a n d d e s t ro y s a l l o f t h e o t h e r British agents, Kingsman has to turn to their American allies, the Statesman, to save the day. Like a bunch of cowboy

bros, the Statesman are pretty much the Felix Leiter to Eggsy's James Bond. Played by, among others, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Jeff Bridges, they can certainly chew their scenery and dialogue. Halle Berry classes up the group as a technical agent. There's a lot of weird stuff in this movie: mind control drugs, mechanical appendages, and even an extended cameo by Sir Elton John as - wait for it - a version of himself that mocks even the image of Elton J ohn that we've all known of decades. It just doesn't add up to very much, I'm sorry to say. "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" runs 141 minutes and is rated R for sequences of strong violence, drug content, language through, and some sexual material. I give this film one star out of four.

“Any job with doing is worth doing right!”

memorably played 20 years ago in her big-screen breakthrough, John Madden's "Mrs. Brown." Dench has credited that film — and the indie distributor who picked it up for nationwide release (Harvey Weinstein) — with birthing her film career.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, Beef brisket and smoked turkey with sides of sweet potato casserole and fried potatoes and onions. Below, pulled pork turnovers.

Hendricks BBQ in St. Charles By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge My latest stop took me to a place in St. Charles I’d been wanting to mark off my “You Gotta Eat” bucket list for quite awhile — Hendricks BBQ. I’ve had several people tell me I needed to check out this barbecue joint located at 1200 South Main St. in the St. Charles Historic District. Hendricks is housed in the refurbished St. Charles Municipal Water Works building and has plenty of space for patrons. You park around back of the restaurant in a large lot along the Katy Trail. There is a patio on the lower level with plenty of room when you approach. Walk up the outside stairs to get to the dining area inside. Once inside you get a gander at the huge dining area. There’s a bar to the right with a plethora of wooden tables and booths to the left in a rustic setting. The sounds of soothing blues music rain down from the speakers and of course that delectable smell of smoked meats hit you in the face. My friend Amanda and I visited together and set up shop on the large deck off the back of the restaurant. It was a beautiful evening and a lot of patrons had similar ideas because the deck was fairly packed. I was excited to see what Hendricks was all about because they had several unique options on their menu. To be honest our experience was kind of odd. I liken it to watching a movie that limps along and then drops the hammer on you with a fantastic twist ending — ala Kevin Spacey’s Usual Suspects or Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. The opening scenes weren’t too shabby. I ordered the pulled pork turnovers off of the appetizer menu, while Amanda got the pulled chicken nachos. The nachos were very good. The tortilla chips were seasoned, sort of resembling Doritos, then blanketed with pulled chicken, jalapenos, tomatoes, lettuce, baked beans, a cheddar cheese sauce and sour cream. The baked beans were a fabulous touch, combined with the seasoned chips it had a great touch of uniqueness. The chicken was also pretty tender.

14

The pulled pork turnovers were good too and obviously unique. They resembled a dessert turnover, like the old Hostess kind, but were filled with meaty goodness. The flaky house-made turnovers were filled with pulled pork, smoked gouda cheese and an onion marmalade. The breading was flaky, sweet and savory and the pork inside was very tender. The pork was the overwhelming taste of the appetizer. This is when the lull in my experience began though. The dipping sauce that accompanied the turnovers was not good. It was a pepper jelly with a somewhat sweet taste up front and an extremely bitter flavor on the backend. I couldn’t stand it. Instead I went with the sweet barbecue sauce supplied on the table and squirted some on for extra flavor. That led to the main course. Amanda went with a large caesar salad, while I went with the pick two off of the BBQ dinner platters portion of the menu.

On the Edge of the Weekend

October 5, 2017

I went with the brisket and the turkey, which was accompanied by two sides. I chose sweet potato casserole and fried potatoes with onions. The turkey was the only real redeeming portion of the main course. It was really tender and when I lathered it up with the sweet sauce it was very enjoyable. The brisket wasn’t terrible. It was pretty tender and rubbed with peppercorn for a nice spice kick, but was too fatty for my taste. As for the sides, the sweet potato casserole had a good taste and was topped off with pecans, but the sweet potato itself was pretty dry. The potatoes and onions on the other hand were a huge disappointment. Boasted as “just like mom used to make” on the menu must mean mom didn’t know how to cook very well. My take on that was they were going to be cooked in vegetable or olive oil with that great moist, tender taste and that was not the case. They arrived dry, smothered in a dry rub. They were overly salty and the onions were sad

dried up little pieces and almost non existent. The potatoes were very dried out, too. Amanda said her salad was OK, but admitted it could have used some diced chicken, which our waitress talked her out of adding to it. At this point we were disappointed. The plot structure of our experience had taken a dastardly turn for the worse, but that’s when the twist came. We decided to reach the ending in super style, turning our attention to the boozy shakes on the menu. You can also order them as regular hand-dipped shakes, but we of course added alcohol. Amanda went with the dark chocolate shake, while I did my thing and ordered the maple bacon crunch. Amanda dug into hers first and by the look in her eyes I could tell she was shocked from excitement. She raved about its chocolaty goodness, saying it tasted like brownie batter and was super rich in taste. As for mine, I sat ogling at it for a bit before trying it out. The strip of bacon protruding out of the heaping of whipped cream on top had me believing I was in for an unforgettable and unforeseeable classic ending. I was not disappointed. The maple and bourbon had a sensational taste and then you add in the pieces of candied bacon waiting in every magical straw swig, and I was in heaven. I slurped the whole thing down, then lathered up my hunk of bacon with whipped cream and gobbled it all down. It was the ending I didn’t see coming, the moment Keyser Soze went from just a name to a cinematic legend (that’s a nod to Usual Suspects if you haven’t seen the film). Check out the whole Hendricks menu at their website, www.hendricksbbq.com. There are daily specials available, along with sandwiches, dinner plates, soups and salads, appetizers and bread baskets. The brisket philly sandwich sounded pretty good as well as the shrimp and grits on the appetizer menu. While Hendricks BBQ isn’t at the top of the list of places I’ve been, it was a fun experience overall and worth the stop when you gotta eat.

For The Edge

Artwork for The Rep's production of "Hamlet."

For The Edge With a story as epic and revered as Hamlet, a theatre company has to either go big or go home. And with its firstever production of William Shakespeare's iconic tragedy (running October 11 through November 5), The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is most definitely going big with an all-star cast and production team. That starts with acclaimed director Paul Mason Barnes, whose Rep adaptations of A Midsummer Night's Dream (2014), The Comedy of Errors (2012) and Macbeth (2011) brought fresh wonder to some of Shakespeare's greatest stories. Midsummer and Comedy of Errors won a combined eight St. Louis Theater Circle Awards, including two for Barnes' direction. The show's cast is headlined by Jim Poulos as Hamlet, who previously starred in Rep productions of Amadeus (in the title role), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Puck) and The Comedy of Errors (Angelo) – all directed by Barnes. The supporting cast features an exciting mix of returning Rep favorites and newcomers: Michael James Reed (Claudius, his 13th Rep production), Robynn Rodriguez (Gertrude, her Rep debut), Christopher Gerson (Horatio, his third Rep production), Kim Wong (Ophelia, her Rep debut), Carl Howell

(Laertes, his second Rep production) and Larry Paulsen (Polonius, his second Rep production). Other familiar names in the 23-member cast include Ben Nordstrom (Osric), Jerry Vogel (Bernardo/Priest) and Jonathan Gillard Daly (Courtier/Player King/Gravedigger). McCorkle Casting, Ltd. is The Rep's casting director. See the full cast list here. The design team behind the show is similarly stacked, starting with longtime Rep scenic designer Michael Ganio (All My Sons, 2017) and costume designer Dorothy Marshall Englis (A Christmas Carol, 2016). Lighting designer Lonnie Rafael Alcaraz (Midsummer and Comedy of Errors) and sound designer Barry G. Funderburg (Midsummer) continue their frequent collaboration with Barnes. Fight director Paul Dennhardt rounds out the production team, bringing an extensive history of fight choreography and instruction that includes productions at Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. Tickets to The Rep's production of Hamlet are currently on sale, and can be purchased online at repstl.org, by calling the Box Office at 314-968-4925 or visiting the Loretto-Hilton Center at 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University) from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Ticket costs range from $18.50 to $89.

The Rep's production of Hamlet is sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors, St. Louis Public Radio and Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. Great Rivers Choral Society announces schedule

The Great Rivers Choral Society (GRCS), an adult choir of mixed voices serving the Riverbend area of Southern Illinois, is pleased to announce the kickoff of the 20172018 season. “We’re really excited about the upcoming season,” said Dr. Ronald Abraham, GRCS Music Director. “We’ll be tackling new works by Randall Stroope and René Clausen as well as some familiar pop arrangements and more traditional choral music – and some old favorites that long-time audience members may recognize.” The concert series begins in the fall (Oct. 7, 14-15) with “Beginnings: Seasons, Love and Life,” presenting some of the finest choral works

from the eighteenth century to modern composers creating today. The concert will feature selections from Haydn's Creation and Randall Thompson's glorious 'Alleluia" as well as newer works. In December, the choir will be joined by a Brass Ensemble to help celebrate the Holiday Season. Music will include "Carols for Brass and Choir” and selections from Bach's triumphant "Christmas Oratorio.” And the Spring Finale will celebrate the approaching summer with “Boys of Summer: Beach Boys, Beatles, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.” All concerts are free to the public, with a free-will offering taken during the performances. “We’re trying some new things this year,” Dr. Abraham said, “and the choir is coming in with renewed energy. For example, we held four Summer Sings in Alton and invited audience members to sing with us. It was a great way to get to know the community and find new members who are looking to join their voices in song.” Dr. Abraham
