Flavored Nation coming to St. Louis For The Edge Food hasn’t been “just something to eat” in over a century, ever since the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis put some of our favorite American foods on the map: hot dogs, ice cream cones, cotton candy and the club sandwich. It’s not that these foods were invented on the spot. The true legacy of the fair is that, for a few brief months in a single place, America’s robust and regionally diverse food culture was on show. People could taste flavors from corners of the country they’d never visited. More than 100 years later, the foods of this country are gathering in the Midwest once again. Through extensive research conducted by a team of culinary experts and food entertainment veterans, Flavored Nation has identified the most iconic food from each of the 50 states. Those 50 dishes – as well as the restaurateurs or chefs who prepare them best – will travel to the St. Louis’ Dome at America’s Center, October 28-29, giving up to 8,000 attendees (as well as to-beannounced celebrity guests) the chance to feast from sea to shining sea. A taste of every state. "America is incredibly passionate about food, which has moved from our plates to our screens and become a core part of today’s pop culture” said Richard Gore, executive producer of Flavored Nation and the former president of live events at Food Network. “For cooks and non-cooks alike, how we speak about food today is not how we talked about it 15 years ago. Food is reviewed, read about and watched on TV; and our social
lives often revolve around eating. However, in a nation of documented culinary diversity, most people’s personal food experience is still limited to local geography and some occasional travel. It’s why a Chicagoan can argue extensively about the city’s best deep dish but has never tried chislic or huddish… the iconic foods of South Dakota and Minnesota, respectively. This is the perfect time for Flavored Nation. We want to fuel debate about local favorites and at the same time spur discovery people crave, providing access to 49 other state dishes that, for most, will be brand new.” Flavored Nation is spearheaded by Gore, who has been developing live culinary entertainment since the mid-1990s (back when food events weren’t a thing). He led the development of “Food Network Live” and “Food University™ at Caesars Palace,” in addition to creating “eat-ertainment” marketing campaigns for brands like Heinz, P&G, Unilever, Ikea and Family Circle. At Gore’s side are fellow food entertainment veterans, David Rosengarten, Jared Bobkin and Bobby Parrish. Rosengarten is a two-time James Beard award winning food writer and was one of the first on-air talents at Food Network. He hosted “Food News & Views” then created and hosted the program “Taste,” which ran for eight years. He’s now Flavored Nation’s head of content. Bobkin is a Detroit-area executive chef who made it to the final rounds of FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen” season 15 and will appear in “Hell’s Kitchen: All-Stars” season 17, premiering September 26. He’s also Flavored Nation’s culinary
director, conducting nationwide research with Rosengarten to determine the United States’ iconic foods and top eateries. Parrish, a Chicago native, is a home cook whose online brand FlavCity has a social following of more than 400K. He appeared on Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” in 2006 and is now the friendly face of Flavored Nation’s online video series. Supporting Flavored Nation’s culinary talent is Gate House Media, one of the largest publishers of locally-based media in the United States, with publications in 36 states and more than 555 markets. Its division, GateHouse Live, an industry leader in event production and execution, will utilize the footprint at downtown St. Louis’ Dome at America’s Center to bring Flavored Nation to life – including three stages of custom entertainment in addition to 50 vendors providing authentic flavors from every state. The vendors who will be in attendance include chefs and restaurateurs almost as iconic as the state dishes they’ll represent: From Louisiana, gumbo recipe in hand, Flavored Nation will feature Dickie Brennan Jr., a New Orleans native and highly visible owner of four New Orleans restaurants - Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse, Palace Café, Bourbon House and Tableau. He’s also the scion of arguably the country’s most famous restaurant family (the Brennans took over management of the Garden District’s Commander ’s Palace in the 1970s and helped launch the careers of world-famous chefs Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme).
From Texas’s Horseshoe Hill in Ft Worth, celebrity cowboy chef Grady Spears will cook chicken fried steak in full western regalia. What is chicken fried steak? It is a thin piece of beef, often “cube steak,” which has been tenderized and is well-seasoned, battered or coated in some fashion. It then goes into the deep fryer until golden-brown on the outside and just cooked-through on the inside. Spears then ladles a cream gravy over it. From Connecticut and Maine, Flavored Nation is furthering the lobster roll feud. In the right corner, from Greenwich, Connecticut, representing ‘hot with butter’ (also known as ‘the coastal’) will be Lobstercraft’s Captain Mike Harden. In the left corner, from South Thomaston, Maine, representing ‘cold with mayonnaise’ (also known as ‘lobster salad roll’) will be McLoons Lobster Shack’s Bree Douty. Like Frazier and Ali, it’s bound to be a battle for the ages. “No one wrote a guidebook on how to authentically identify the United States’ most iconic foods,” said Rosengarten. “It’s been an amazing adventure and challenge. Some states, like Louisiana, California and New York, are well known for multiple dishes. For other states, like South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska, I personally drew a blank. Through exhaustive research, consumer input via social media and conversations with state tourism boards, we’ve mapped it out. Now, we’re stacking our roster. Restaurants and chefs can’t buy their way in. This is invite only, and we’ll be bringing the best of the best for an unrivaled culinary experience this fall at Flavored

Flavored Nation is bringing together two days of programming, multiple stages of ongoing entertainment and surprise celebrity guests, as well as a meticulously curated tasting extravaganza. Needless to say, we’re eager for year one and have nothing but optimism for the future.” For more information on Flavored Nation, and to purchase tickets, visit flavorednation.com. Orchids do best with 12 to 14 hours of sunlight and indoor light systems can help supplement the amount of light needed for the plants to thrive.
Keep orchids beautiful and blooming By MELINDA MYERS For The Edge Lift your spirits, enliven your indoor décor or give the gift of beautiful blooming orchids. You’ll enjoy these exotic blossoms for months with just minimal care – once you know what to do. Start with a healthy flowering plant. The phalaenopsis or moth orchid is the most widely available and easiest to grow. It’s similar to caring for an African violet. When you provide the proper growing conditions, maintenance is a breeze. The challenge comes with less-than-ideal indoor growing conditions of low light and dry air. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to create a better environment for your orchid. Keep in mind that most orchids are epiphytes. In nature they grow on other plants and obtain water and nutrients from the air, water and plant debris that accumulates in their environment. This is why they are grown in an orchid mix made of organic material such as peat, fir bark and perlite. This or a similar combination retains water while providing needed drainage. Give your orchid a good soaking once a week. Pour off any excess water that collects in the saucer. Don’t allow orchids to sit in water and don’t water them too often. This can lead to root rot and death of your plant.

On the Edge of the Weekend
Further improve the environment by increasing the humidity around the plant. Group them with other orchids and indoor plants. As one plant loses moisture, or “transpires”, the others will benefit from the increase in humidity. Plus, you’ll create a beautiful display while improving the growing conditions. Alternatively, you can create humidity trays. Place pebbles in the saucer and the pot on top of the pebbles. Allow excess water to collect in the pebbles below the pot. As this evaporates it increases the humidity around your plant. This also eliminates the need to pour off the excess water that collects in the saucer. For larger plant collections use rubber humidity plant tray grids. These save space by allowing you to place several plants on one tray. These are perfect for growing on tables or light stands. Place your plant in a bright location. Orchids do best with 12 to 14 hours of sunlight. Unobstructed south- or east-facing windows are usually the best. Or give plants a boost with artificial lights. Newer full spectrum LED lights provide needed light while using less energy. And there’s no reason to hide your orchid and light setup in the basement. Check out the attractive, new indoor grow light systems like the Coltura LED Grow Frame (gardeners.com). It can be mounted on the wall or set on a table. Either way, your orchids will be in full view for all to enjoy.
October 19, 2017
Fertilize actively growing plants with an orchid fertilizer. Michigan State University developed a fertilizer that efficiently provides the nutrients orchids need. They have “Orchid Tap Water” and “Orchid Pure Water Fertilizer” formulations. Just follow label directions for best results. Once the plants are done flowering, you can keep them growing indoors. If you like a challenge, try reblooming. On phalaenopsis orchids, just cut back the flowering stem between the second or third node from the bottom. Or give the plant a rest and cut the flower stem back to the leaves. Continue to provide proper care and wait to see if you were successful. You can also simply treat an orchid plant like a long-lasting bouquet. That way there’s no guilt if you decide to toss it. And if the guilt is too much, just look for an avid gardener. There’s always someone who would be happy to adopt and try to rebloom your non-flowering plant. Melinda Myers has written more than 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening. Illinois bicentennial children's art contest planned
Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham
Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, homeeducated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A year-long celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"Kingsman: The Golden Circle"
In the first film about a secret spy group known as Kingsman, we learned they are well-dressed, courtly and perfectly groomed. But by the second film, there's a decidedly ungentlemanly whiff about them — of desperation. "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" comes three years after the first leg in the Matthew Vaughn-directed franchise — and it bodes poorly for the expected third. This sequel is an overlong, labored affair that lacks the fizz of its predecessor. Even an insane cameo by Elton John — in his full feather and rhinestone glory — can't save it. For anyone needing a refresher, the Kingsman movies are based on a series of comic books by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons that centers on British upper crust spies who combine a fondness for bespoke tailoring with the lethality of James Bond. They hang out in a Saville Row tailor shop, sip tea, are fitted for 007-like gadgets and save the world in secret. The first film introduced the working class Eggsy (Taron Egerton) as a potential recruit who is championed by Kingsman leader Colin Firth, despite the younger man's crudeness and ill-breeding. He proved his mettle by foiling a diabolical plan hatched by a billionaire internet entrepreneur played by Samuel L. Jackson, whose weird lisp outlasted its welcome. The charm of the first film was the way it straddled the line between celebrating spy movies and mocking them. It had a winking, self-aware humor. Plus, the action sequences were absolutely stunning, with cameras doing 360-degree turns, cool slo-mos and acrobatic fight choreography. The humor has worn off by the second, even if the camerawork is still spectacular. The music is very good, too, from the use of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" to making John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" into a stirring anthem. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and language." RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"Battle of the Sexes"
Can an inspirational movie also be a drag? That's the distinct feeling one can't shake walking out of "Battle of the Sexes ," a fictionalized rendering of the 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old Billie Jean King and 55-yearold hustler Bobby Riggs and the circumstances surrounding it. At stake is the opportunity for women in tennis to even get equal pay consideration, the reputation of a player who could have just stayed in her lane and the perceptions of society at large and, perhaps most importantly, the men in power. "I'm going to be the best," says Emma Stone playing Billie Jean. "That way I can really change things." Fast forward 44 years: We're still here, aren't we? "Battle of the Sexes," directed by the "Little Miss Sunshine" team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and written by Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire"), is on the whole a fairly standard, if unexceptional film that has two major things going for it: Emma Stone and timeliness. The story begins by establishing Billie Jean as the best female player in the world — celebrated and adored everywhere she goes — but still not worthy of even half of the prize money top male tennis players were getting in 1972. A well-cast Stone, fresh off her Oscar win for playing an aspiring actress in "La La Land," transforms into the quiet, driven and sharp tennis pro with the help of a dye job and wire rim glasses. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for some sexual content and partial nudity." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Victoria & Abdul"
Stop us if this sounds familiar: A tall, dark, bearded servant of rough breeding comes from far away to suddenly charm a grumpy, widowed Queen Victoria and thus upend Britain's royal court at the turn of the 20th century. You were perhaps thinking of the film "Mrs. Brown," starring Judi Dench as the monarch and Bill Connolly as her Scottish underling, John Brown? Well, hold on. A new movie has come along exactly 20 years later with an eerily similar plot. Either Victoria was a creature of habit in her attachments or her filmmakers are. Substitute Connolly with Ali Fazal and you get "Victoria & Abdul," a film about the then-most powerful woman on earth's second unusually intimate relationship with a commoner. In this case, a Muslim from India in 1887. Fascinatingly, Dench is back as the monarch, two decades after she played Victoria and earned an Oscar nomination for it. It's a privilege to watch her revisit the crusty, we-are-not-amused queen, who is now in the twilight of her life. Dench is riveting, unsentimental, impatient and gloriously brittle. Sometimes all she does is offer an irritated sigh, speaking volumes. "Everyone I loved has died and I just go on and on," she cries. Dench is well supported — the cast includes the marvelous Eddie Izzard, the late Tim Pigott-Smith and the imperious Michael Gambon — and the pomp and highly choreographed English ceremonialism is captured beautifully by director Stephen Frears, who knows a thing or two about royalty, having directed Helen Mirren in "The Queen." There's only one major problem: The man at the center, Abdul Karim. He remains a blank canvas, his motives unexplored, his interior or domestic life uncaptured. He is called "the brown John Brown" and offers no riposte. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some thematic elements and language" RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"Mark Felt"
As a lifetime Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and No. 2 to J. Edgar Hoover, Mark Felt was not exactly an ordinary man, but he was, it seems, a highly unlikely candidate to topple a presidency. Felt was the man behind Deep Throat, the Watergate whistleblower who led Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to the explosive truth behind that break-in. He lived only as a shadowy mystery in the popular imagination until he gave up his long-held secret in 2005, a few years before he died. By then what he represented had already transcended anything an actual human could live up to. It's not a surprise then that the fictionalized telling of his story in "Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House " is a little underwhelming. The mundanities of the truth could hardly be as sexy as decades of intrigue and mythology enshrined in history and the enduring greatness of "All the President's Men." But director Peter Landesman ("Concussion") and star Liam Neeson nonetheless manage to weave together a fairly compelling (if disputed ) tick-tock of how it all went down from Felt's purview. And it all started with a slight. We're introduced to Felt in his ordinary suburban home, getting ready for another day of work at the Bureau. He's a tall and soft-spoken man who hides the dirty secrets of the country, and his organization, behind a stoic poker face. A few characters at the outset tell him (read: us) how loyal and reliable and competent he is — a "golden retriever" for whomever is in power. When J. Edgar Hoover dies, Felt is passed over for that top position in favor of Nixon favorite L. Patrick Gray (Marton Csokas) — a mighty snub that sows the seed of discontentment in Felt. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some language." RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"The Mountain Between Us"
"The Mountain Between Us" is about two strangers who survive a plane crash only to end up in the unforgiving snowy Utah mountains, with no cell reception and precious little food. So they do what comes naturally. They try to eat each other. No, no, no. Are you crazy? They fall in love — kinda, sorta, maybe. Actually, perhaps they should have tried something else because this romance novel-meets-survival story doesn't really succeed at either, despite fine performances by Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. Based on Charles Martin's same-named novel, the film is ably directed by Hany Abu-Assad and centers on the chance meeting at an Idaho airport of a photojournalist hoping to get home in time for her wedding and a neurosurgeon needing to get back East for an important operation. An incoming storm shuts down all commercial flights and forces them to seek a charter plane, and it becomes one of the worst advertising for charter flights in history (Quick, sell your stocks). The pilot fails to file a flight plan and then crashes after having a heart attack (thanks, Beau Bridges). The crash sequence is remarkable and we're terrifyingly trapped in the fuselage watching it unfold. Our couple — and an adorable lab owned by the pilot — emerge battered but alive, hundreds of miles from anything. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality, peril, injury images and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"The Florida Project"
Not too far from the gates of the Walt Disney World Resort, where families are promised "enchanted escapes" and "fun" and "magic" and where day tickets start at a cool $99 a person, is a discount motel off a busy street called The Magic Castle. It's painted in garish shades of lavender and amethyst right down to the street curbs. The ice machine is broken. The washer and dryer often are too. It costs $38 a night. And it is home for a young mother, Halley, and her 6-yearold daughter, Moonee, in director Sean Baker's "The Florida Project ," a transcendently beautiful, funny, heartwarming (and heart wrenching) tale of childhood, poverty and the broken American dream. This is Kissimmee, Florida, and it is less than 10 miles away from that fairy tale promise of Disney. It might as well be on another planet. Not that Moonee notices. Played by the wonderfully great newcomer Brooklynn Prince, Moonee exists is in a world of her own: A charmed childhood dreamscape of freedom and friends and devilish fun and colorful buildings shaped like oranges and soft serve cones. Moonee is not an angel — quite the opposite. She's kind of a terror. She is not well-behaved or polite or deferential to adults. And she does some truly bad things, but you can't help but fall in love with her. She is unmistakably her age, which Baker never conceals or glosses over or exploits for mawkish story tricks. Young childhood is so hard to get right in the movies. Children in films are pawns that never feel true — either too poetic or perceptive or cute to be believed. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for language throughout, disturbing behavior, sexual references and some drug material." RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

"Mountain Between Us" mixes romance, action By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press "The Mountain Between Us" is about two strangers who survive a plane crash only to end up in the unforgiving snowy Utah mountains, with no cell reception and precious little food. Based on Charles Martin's same-named novel, the film is ably directed by Hany Abu-Assad and centers on the chance meeting at an Idaho
airport of a photojournalist hoping to get home in time for her wedding and a neurosurgeon needing to get back East for an important operation. The film then somewhat unsteadily balances a cute, getting-to-know-you budding respect
between two tentative lovers and the raw ravages of survival, which includes cougars, thin ice and deep snow (thanks again, Beau Bridges). There's a bit of "Cast Away" and "The Edge" here, as if directed by Bear Grylls. The screenplay by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe makes our couple opposites — she's impulsive and has a deep pool of caring and empathy, while he's methodical. He focuses on the brain, after all, and considers the heart just "a muscle." He thinks it's wise to stay with the plane wreckage until a rescue team arrives; she thinks they have to venture out and rescue themselves. "Look, I don't want to die up here because you're too scared to take a risk," she tells him. He, in turn, calls her "reckless" and "selfish." (His mysterious romantic life and refusal to talk
about it also causes a rift). Abu-Assad and cinematographer Mandy Walker are skillful at showing the freezing dangers our heroes face and do not romanticize the outdoors. They pace the growing affection between the man and woman nicely, too, not rushing the romance there either. But it's hard to know what's churning inside these hearts during a struggle for bare survival. The kind of witty, rom-com dialogue that can illustrate deepening love over, say, a milkshake and in-line skating can't be used here (where they're butchering a cougar) so it's up to the acting — lingering eyes, a jacket tenderly placed over a sleeping companion — and some weird flashbacks to that jacket tenderly placed over a sleeping companion — must suffice.
Carell, Stone can't save "Battle of the Sexes" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I'm of the opinion that Steve Carell is going to one day win the Academy Award for his clever acting. I loved him as the oafish Michael Scott on NBC's "The Office" as much as anyone, but I so cherish his more dramatic works that his films pop from my calendar each year like the cork from a fine bottle of champagne. I l o v e d h i m i n " F re e h e l d " and feared his wrath in "The Big Short". I was beside myself with his scenery chewing take on John DuPont in "Foxcatcher"; that role was enough to give us all the creeps. This week Carell returned to the silver screen in a juicy bid to bring back the legend of tennis hustler Bobby Riggs in a filmed version of "Battle of the
Sexes" alongside another luminary actress, Emma Stone, portraying the luminary tennis champion Billie Jean King. The two give boffo performances, but I'm glum to report that the movie is a dry and dramatic egg that only loosens up the biggest moment of their relationship during the final ten minutes of the film. Otherwise, I was bored. This is not a comedy. Former world #1 Bobby Riggs was long retired in 1973 when he used his influence and professionally-honed gambling addiction to challenge a woman to a televised exhibition match for a fat purse of prize money, to the dismay of his put-upon wife, Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Wo m e n ' s t e n n i s h a d j u s t launched its own tour and Riggs smelled a chance to use his bigger than life personality to influence
attention to the sport that had made him a king as far back as the early days of World War II. It was the top-rated Margaret Court (Jessica McNamee) who first accepted Bobby's offer to play a man more than twenty-five years older than her. Their match was a lopsided affair on Mother's Day and it only served to give Bobby more motivation to pursue King, a rising star considered to be the best in her generation. She finally acquiesced when she'd had enough of his condescending chauvinism and the two met in a match at Houston's Astrodome. There were 90 million people watching. Howard Cosell was broadcasting for ABC. Egyptian slaves and buxom cheerleaders generated hoopla. Live sheep and squealing piglets were given
as gifts. This was one of the most broadly followed sporting events of the Twentieth Century. And it was all the more important for the reasons that were going on behind the scenes. Stone is the real star of this picture. Her take on Billie Jean King comes on the heels of her Oscarwinning turn in "La La Land" and reunites her with former co-star Carell ("Crazy, Stupid Love") who himself is getting the band back together with co-directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton ("Little Miss Sunshine"). She opens the doors on this groundbreaking real life character. The movie, you see, is a very deliberate unfolding of King's sexuality as she comes to grips with ending a marriage with husband Larry (Austin Stowell) and
October 19, 2017
exploring her own homosexuality with her hairdresser, Marilyn (Andrea Riseborough). On paper, this is a perfect role for Stone: legendary figure on the equal rights circuit, burgeoning lesbian role model, shy and conflicted talent who probably didn't want to be a heroine to millions. And the fact of the matter is the development here is very slow. Just when the two leads, who actually share very little screen time, get going, something slaps the action back down. I think ESPN could have done a better job with this one in an incarnation of their great "30 for 30" series. "Battle of the Sexes" runs 121 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some sexual content and partial nudity. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Religion Senators debate when nominee's religion is fair game By TODD RUGER CQ-Roll Call WASHINGTON — A Senate Judiciary Committee vote on a controversial appeals court pick recently prompted a discussion about when it is appropriate to ask questions about a nominee’s religion — and even a suggestion to hold a public hearing on the issue. The topic arose because of questions Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California and Richard J. Durbin of Illinois asked last month during a confirmation hearing for Amy Barrett, a University of Notre Dame law professor and a Roman Catholic who is nominated for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
Feinstein told Barrett during the hearing that one could conclude “the dogma lives loudly within you,” which was a “concern” on issues such as abortion rights. Durbin asked her, “Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?” Before senators voted Thursday to advance Barrett’s nomination to the Senate floor, Feinstein and Durbin defended their questions as appropriate for exploring how Barrett’s faith might conflict with her actions on the bench, since they said she had no judicial experience for senators to examine. Barrett had previously raised the issue in a 1998 article about how orthodox Catholic judges might act on the bench. Durbin, a Catholic, said Republicans Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, Orrin G. Hatch of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas asked questions
about Barrett’s faith as well. He said it is “absurd” to suggest he sought to impose a religious test or that a Catholic couldn’t serve on the bench. “I take our Constitution seriously when it says there should be no religious test for public office,” Durbin said. “But many senators on this committee, Republicans and Democrats, felt the writings of the nominee warranted an inquiry on her views on the impact of religion on a judge’s role. That is not a religious test.” But Grassley, the panel’s chairman, said he feared “the committee is heading down a dangerous road if we continue to ask nominees questions like this.” “The Constitution specifically provides that ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office under the United
States.’ It’s one of the most important founding principles,” Grassley said. “I don’t think an evaluation of how religious a nominee is — or isn’t — should ever be part of our evaluation.” Feinstein said she opposed Barrett’s nomination for several reasons, including how she might treat landmark precedents from the Supreme Court that guarantee a woman’s right to have an abortion. When it comes to questions about religion, “I think that has been exaggerated out of any reality,” Feinstein said. “I myself am a product of Catholic education, I’ve spent more time in a church than I have in a synagogue, and I would be deeply resentful of any comment to the contrary, and I think people who know me know how I feel,” said Feinstein, who is Jewish.

For The Edge A witty two-hander from The Curious Incident of the Dog in t h e N i g h t - Ti m e p l a y w r i g h t Simon Stephens, Heisenberg is a sharp and inspiring opener for The Rep's 2017-2018 Studio season. Directed by Steven Woolf, the production runs October 25 – November 12 in the Emerson Studio Theatre. A serendipitous encounter at a London train station propels two very different people into a shared orbit. Georgie (Susan Louise O'Connor) is crass, deeply odd and impulsive. \ On a whim, she kisses the neck of Alex (Joneal Joplin), a much older and more subdued man who is sitting by himself. In the unexpected conversations that follow, Georgie and Alex discover shared passions amidst the uncertainty of personal connection. This life-affirming play uncovers the extraordinary in the everyday. Joplin, last seen as Marley in 2016's A Christmas Carol, returns for his 101st Rep production, and his first in the Studio since 1996's Ghosts. O'Connor stars opposite him in her second Rep production, following her Kevin Kline Award-nominated performance in 2011's God of Carnage. Dining Delights Trick-or-Treat – and say cheese For the Intelligencer October is the month of sticky and sweet. While trick-or-treating may be the highlight, there’s plenty to celebrate before the big finale of Halloween. October is, after all, National Caramel Month, National Cookie Month and National Dessert Month; with National Candy Corn Day on the 30th thrown in for good measure. Celebrating such sweetness could easily lead to “treating” all month long. That could be all great fun for kids, but not so great for their teeth and overall dental health. This month, St. Louis District Dairy Council is reminding consumers to build healthy smiles by making sure they get plenty of cheese, milk and yogurt. “Dairy foods offer calcium, vitamin D, potassium and phosphorus; important building blocks of strong bones and teeth,” notes nutrition educator Erin Rich. Eating the recommended 3 servings of dairy every day gives your body a continuous supply of these vitamins and minerals to build and keep teeth---and smiles--healthy. Cheese, in particular, is one of the healthiest foods for your teeth. As with other dairy foods, the calcium, phosphorus and protein found in cheese strengthen tooth enamel, the outer coating of teeth. Another reason that cheese is the choice for super smiles: research shows that eating cheese right after a meal or as a snack helps reduce tooth decay. “Cheese is not only great tasting and nutrient-packed, but it’s a simple addition to most diets, even for those watching calories, sodium or fat. Most grocery stores offer a variety of cheeses to meet those needs,” notes Rich. For parents seeking balance in the season of sweets, cheese is an easy snack option. Pairing it with raw veggies or fresh fruit takes mere minutes, and adds a nutrient boost. Cheese sticks and pre-cut cracker-sized slices in a variety of flavors, such as Cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack have made cheese a favorite grab-and-go food. For a truly spooktacular time, make Cheesy Witch’s Broomstick snacks while reading the witchy story Room on the Broom. The tale of friendship and trickery is the perfect way to encourage little goblins to celebrate the season in the healthy fun way. Cheesy Witch’s Broomsticks Ingredients: String Cheese Pretzel Sticks Fresh Chives Start by having an adult helper cut the cheese stick into thirds and then make lengthwise cuts half way up each section. Insert a pretzel stick into the uncut ends of each section of cheese and bind with a piece of chive. (Attach PDF of Cheesy Broomstick snacks.) For additional information on the health benefi ts of dairy foods visit, www.stldairycouncil.org, call St. Louis District Dairy Council at 314-835-9668, or e-mail erich@ stldairycouncil.org. Promote healthy smiles with the whole family with these tasty, fall recipes from St. Louis District Dairy Council: Muenster Monster Kabobs These spooky snacks are a fun and healthy craft that the whole family will enjoy!

ROOM ON THE BROOM Celebrate Hallo ween with this witchy story and the dairy snack it inspired!
This story begins with a witch and her cat, flying on broomstick, till off goes her hat. Also lost is a bow and a wand. The witch’s ensemble is returned by a dog, bird, and frog. The witch offered a ride to these kind folk, but under their weight, her broomstick broke! The animals fell down into a muddy ditch, but on her half-broomstick, on went the witch. Before long, a dragon ran into the witch and decided he was hungry for witch and chips. The witch cried for help and before the dragon could feast, out from the ditch came a four-headed beast. “That’s my witch!” it cried, giving the dragon a fright. Quickly he fled off into the night. The cat, dog, bird, and frog climbed out of the ditch while receiving much thanks from the grateful witch. The witch cast a spell for a new, sturdier broom. She hopped on with her friends and there was plenty of room.
