The Kennedy assassination SIUE Arts & Issues will present an eyewitness

T

he SIUE Arts & Issues program brings in a historically timely and interesting program next on Nov. 7 when award-winning journalist and No. 1 New York Times best-selling author Lisa McCubbin interviews former Secret Service Agent Clint Hill about five days that changed the world forever – the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This November marks the 54th anniversary of JFK’s assassination.

“Five Days in November: A Multimedia Presentation with Clint Hill” takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 in SIUE’s Morris University’s Meridian Ballroom.

This presentation is sponsored by the Madison County Regional Office of Education.

In a riveting presentation filled with rare slides and video footage, McCubbin will interview Hill who was with Mrs. Kennedy on Nov. 21, 1963 as they departed the White House for Texas – traveling that day to San Antonio, Houston and Fort Worth.

Hill will also recount the fateful day on Nov. 22 as he traveled with the Kennedys to Dallas, was in the motorcade when JFK was assassinated and stayed by Jacqueline Kennedy’s side for the next three days through the heart wrenching funeral of the president.

Hear the dramatic story from someone who was there and how those five days changed America forever.

McCubbin has collaborated with Hill to write several powerful memoirs including “Mrs. Kennedy and Me,” “Five Days in November” and “Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford.”

According to her online biography, McCubbin is a graduate of Babson College, and “she has been a television news anchor and reporter, hosted her own radio talk show, and spent six years in the Middle East as a freelance journalist.”

“In 2009, Gerald Blaine – a longtime family friend—contacted her and asked if she would help him write a book about his time in the Secret Service. Their collaboration, “The Kennedy Detail: JFK’s Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence,” released in 2010, became a New York Times bestseller and was the basis for the Emmy-nominated Discovery channel documentary, “The Kennedy Detail,” McCubbin’s biography further notes.

It was during the writing of “The Kennedy Detail” that McCubbin met Hill, who was then retired, and subsequently the two collaborated on the three before mentioned books which are based on Hill’s remarkable career.

McCubbin's biography also points out that Hill had vowed he would never write a book, and had spent many years in seclusion, but subsequently has found the process of writing with McCubbin to be cathartic.

“He credits Lisa McCubbin for bringing him out of his “dungeon, where he languished for years in [his] emotional prison” and for helping him “find a reason to live, not just exist,” McCubbin’s website further states.

Hill’s background is equally fascinating. He was a U.S. Secret Service Agent from 1958 to 1975 serving five presidents— Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford.

He is credited with saving First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s life when shots rang out on Nov. 22, 1963, and he leapt to the back of the president’s limousine in and effort to protect both JFK and the First Lady.

“Hill was born January 4, 1932 and was adopted as an infant

by Chris and Jennie Hill who raised him alongside his adopted sister Janice in the small town of Washburn, North Dakota.

In 1954, he graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, with a degree in History and Physical Education.

He intended to be a history teacher and athletics coach, but was immediately drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Special Agent in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps,” Hill’s biography states on his website.

“In 1958, Hill applied and was accepted into the U. S. Secret Service as a Special Agent in the Denver field office. A year later he was assigned to the elite White House Detail protecting President Dwight D. Eisenhower. When John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960, Hill was assigned to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s detail, and he remained with Mrs. Kennedy, Caroline, and John Jr. for one year after the assassination,” his biography further notes.

In Nov. of 1964, Hill was reassigned to the White House, and he eventually became the Special Agent in Charge of Presidential Protection during Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration.

When Richard Nixon became president in 1969, Hill served as the Special Agent in Charge of Vice Presidential Protection with V.P. Spiro Agnew. When Hill retired from the Secret Service in 1975, Hill was the assistant director responsible for all protective forces when he retired from the Secret Service in 1975.

Currently Hill is a guest speaker at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and continues to participate with present day Secret Service personnel in discussing protective activities and procedures.

Illinois bicentennial children's art contest planned

Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes.

The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

throughout the bicentennial year of 2018.

Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15.

Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday.

Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide).

They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ ALPLMartcontest.

Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning.

The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate.

Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

Illinois became the nation’s

21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A yearlong celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December.

The magical story of a boy's search for the real meaning of Christmas comes to life when real railroad trains depart St. Louis Union Station for a round-trip journey to the "North Pole."

Set to the sounds of classic motion picture soundtrack, passengers will relive the magic of the story as they are whisked away on The Polar Express Once onboard, hot chocolate and cookies are served as passengers read along with the classic children's book, The Polar Express,

by Chris Van Allsburg.

Santa and his helpers greet passengers at the North Pole and then board the train, where each child is given the first gift of Christmas - a silver sleigh bell. Chefs aboard each car lead passengers in singing Christmas carols on the ride back to St. Louis Union Station.

Chicago's MSI offers peek behind the scenes For The Edge The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago’s (MSI) newest exhibit, Imagining the Museum, debuts more than 70 never-beforeseen illustrations and 3D models to give guests a detailed look at how the Museum and its famed exhibits have evolved over its nearly 84-year history. The exhibit, on display through spring of 2018, includes the original plans for some of the institution’s most popular exhibits such as the Coal Mine, the Museum’s very first exhibit; Science

Storms, featuring the world’s only 40-foot swirling vortex; and The Great Train Story, which is home to more than 190 buildings custombuilt for the miniature display.

“We’re excited to bring these incredible works out from the archives as they tell an integral part of the Museum of Science and Industry’s story,” said Kathleen McCarthy, director of collections and head curator. “The Museum has always celebrated creativity and innovation, and we believe that guests will really enjoy seeing this behind-the-scenes process of

how the Museum has continually evolved, and exploring the cuttingedge technologies displayed over the past 84 years.”

The concepts detailed in Imagining the Museum, located in the Rita and John Canning Galleries on the Museum’s Lower Court, date back to the beginning of the Museum’s history, from the first exhibit ideas to the permanent exhibits currently open at MSI, including: • Multiple original illustrations of the Coal Mine, MSI’s very first exhibit, that show the early plans

of its construction and design methods that are still in use today.

• A miniature 3D model of T h e G r e a t Tr a i n S t o r y u s e d by engineers to aid in the construction of the actual exhibit, which follows the journey from Chicago to Seattle along 1,400 feet of railroad track. Additional drawings also show how the initial plans mapped the trip from Chicago to Los Angeles before changing the final destination to Seattle because the display would have been too large to fit in the exhibit space.

• Vibrant renderings of the Museum’s iconic permanent exhibit, Science Storms, that depict how ideas for an exhibition take shape, evolve and ultimately come to life.

• 1950s-era concept sketches depicting a large-scale spaceship to celebrate the 100th anniversary of civil engineering in America.

Imagining the Museum will run at MSI through the spring of 2018 and is included with Museum Entry ($18 for adults and $11 for children ages 3-11).

Travel For The Edge The annual Citizen Jane Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary Thursday, Oct. 26 through Sunday, Oct. 29 on the Stephens College campus and throughout downtown Columbia.

This homegrown festival champions independent films made by independent women and has seen its reputation grow stronger every year since its inaugural fest in 2008. Citizen Jane has garnered praise and recognition throughout the film industry and beyond. MovieMaker Magazine, the voice for independent film and filmmakers, named Citizen Jane one of the top 25 "coolest film festivals in the world" in 2015 and one of the top 50 festivals "worth the entry fee" for 2016 and 2017.

The Citizen Jane program features some of the most daring and accomplished works by women filmmakers from around the world complete with interactive panels with filmmakers, in-depth workshops with industry professionals and fun and festive parties, all in four action-packed days and nights.

Given that 2017 marks a milestone in the life of the festival, the organizers have gone out of their way to make it a special occasion.

"This year we are especially proud of our film lineup," says Executive Director Barbie Banks, now in her second year in charge of Citizen Jane. "The diversity in filmmakers, genre, and topics make it one of the best years yet."

First-year Features Programmer Donna Kozloskie adds, "We hope that by programming a broad spectrum of films we can highlight the recent accomplishments of women in film while also expanding the minds of the industry - and audiences - to the possibilities."

Highlights of the 2017 film program include the legendary AgnĂŠs Varda and JR's collaborative documentary "Faces Places," Janicza Bravo's visionary "Lemon" and also season one of "195 Lewis," a web series set to drop this fall. From an Indonesian Western, "Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts," to a suburban coming of age drama from the mind of a twenty-year-old, "Blame," the programmers for Citizen Jane hope to provide something for everyone, whether within the film industry or simply a lover of film.

"Issues of gender inequality in film communities, and the film industry as a whole, continue to flood the media," says Kozloskie. "Through our programming, and simply our existence, Citizen Jane hopes to turn these conversations from the negative to the positive."

According to Rainy Kerwin, the writer/ director/actor for the feature film "The Wedding Invitation," who attended Citizen Jane (CJFF) in 2016, the festival is well on track to fulfill their mission. In her article that ran in the Winter 2017 issue of MovieMaker, Kerwin raves about her experience at the festival, stating that Citizen Jane "raised the bar and then catapulted over it." Kerwin concludes her story with this takeaway, which is a perfect summation of the festival's end goal: "...the true uniqueness of this festival is its commitment to bringing together and sharing the work of female-created projects.

In an industry so heavily dominated by testosterone, and in a culture that propagates the myth that there are very few female directors, CJFF is creating a platform for women to share their voices. CJFF is making a difference. Those CJFF laurels are a feather in my cap and one of my most prized takeaways from my festival run."

The 2017 lineup consists of over 70 films, including 17 feature-length films and eight short-film programs screening throughout the weekend. The films run the gamut of fiction, nonfiction and animation and the themes for the shorts programs include "Emerging Voices," "Family Fun!," "Intersection," "Mix Tape," "Ms. Ouri Made," "Secret Lives of Girls," "Under the Moon," and, "Fests Like

The Citizen Jane Film School takes place from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Friday evening at Columbia Access Television's Studio A. Us!" In honor of the tenth anniversary of Citizen Jane, organizers asked eight different festivals to collaborate with CJFF on a program that represents the shared mission to support women and diversity in film. The end result is the shorts program "Fests Like Us!," which is billed as a can't-miss event.

The festival officially kicks off its opening night on Friday, but there are two specials events scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26.

The Citizen Jane Summit, which is described as an engaging discussion that brings "thought leaders" from around the country to strategize on ways to address the challenges around the representation of women behind and in front of the camera, takes place from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in Senior Hall on Stephens College campus, 100 Waugh Street. This event is free and open to the public.

Later that evening, from 10 p.m. until 11:30 p.m., the StorySlam goes down at Talking Horse Productions, 210 St. James Street.

Inspired by "The Moth," StorySlam is a live storytelling event where both novice and experienced speakers present a short story connected by a common thread. This edition, storytellers will relate true, personal stories, revolving around Citizen Jane's 2017 theme: "Mixed Frequencies." Admission to the StorySlam costs $5 with proceeds going to Columbia Access Television.

The Citizen Jane Film School, which runs in conjunction with the festival, takes place from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Columbia Access Television's Studio A, also located on the Stephens campus. The Film School features four panels of female filmmakers and industry professionals providing discussion, education and support about the role of women in an ever-changing film industry.

The Film School is a collaboration between the festival, Stephens College and CATV. The Film School is open to the public, especially anyone interested in learning more about filmmaking and current topics related to the film industry.

The discussions will air on CATV at a later date.

The opening night festivities get

underway on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with a VIP reception followed by a screening of "Landline" in the Windsor Auditorium on the Stephens College campus, 1405 E. Broadway. During the opening night ceremonies, organizers will recognize the acclaimed screenwriter Linda Woolverton (who wrote Disney's "Beauty and the Best," "The Lion King," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Maleficent") as the first-ever recipient of the inaugural 2017 Frances Award. The Frances Award, presented by the Stephens College's Master of Fine Arts in TV and Screenwriting and Citizen Jane Film Festival, will be given annually to a screenwriter who has advanced the creative writing of film through the years, and who has made outstanding contribution to the profession of screenwriting. The award is named after Fances Marion, an American journalist, author, film director and screenwriter, who is often cited as the most renowned female screenwriter of the 20th century.

After the opening night screening, the activities shift to Logboat Brewing Company, 504 Fay Street, for Citizen Jane Under the Moon, an outdoor screening of short horror films complete with live music, a bonfire, s'mores and beer from the award-winning Logboat Brewing Company. Citizen Jane Under the Moon is free and open to the public with films beginning at 10:30 p.m.

Films begin playing on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day and into the evening at four different screening venues throughout Columbia's walkable downtown.

Several special events will take place on Saturday, including The Joan Crawford Effect at the college's celebrated Costume Museum in Lela Raney Wood Hall, 6 N. College Ave. This drop-in exhibition takes place from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. and examines the manufacturing of "glamour" by focusing on the late Academy Award-winning Hollywood star, Joan Crawford. This exhibit features suits and evening gowns from the '30s and '40s from Stephens' permanent collection demonstrating the impact on women's

fashions that Joan Crawford had when she collaborated with her favorite MGM costume designer, Adrian. An informative guided tour also is included.

On Saturday evening, there's a bicycle wine "hop" called "Velo, Vino, Vici." This event is a fun, easy, and social bike ride for women only that celebrates the role the bicycle has played in women's empowerment and independence.

Riders will stop to enjoy wine samples at several locations and end at the Phosphors: Digital Art Installation located in the North Village Arts District, 210 St. James Street .

New for 2017, Phosphors is a one-of-a-kind projection art installation featuring local and internationally recognized artists. Utilizing the latest digital technologies to project their original works onto buildings in the North Village Arts District, the artists will transform the neighborhood into a living work of visual art.A late-night dance party will take place at Columbia's local speakeasy, The Social Room, at 220 W. Eighth Street, from 10 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.

Films continue on Sunday from 11 a.m. and throughout the day. The closing night film, the highly-acclaimed "In the Radiant City," screens at 7 p.m. at the Macklanburg Playhouse, 100 Willis Avenue. "In the Radiant City" tells the story of the responsibility and redemption of a rural Kentucky family as they struggle to deal with the fallout of a murder committed by a member of their clan. The celebrated co-writer and director of the film, Rachel Lambert, will be on hand to answer questions from the audience following the screening.

The Citizen Jane box office, which is located in the Columbia Foyer on the Stephens campus, opens on Tuesday, Oct. 24 and ticket are on sale very day of the festival, though hours vary.

"Victoria & Abdul"

Stop us if this sounds familiar: A tall, dark, bearded servant of rough breeding comes from far away to suddenly charm a grumpy, widowed Queen Victoria and thus upend Britain's royal court at the turn of the 20th century.

You were perhaps thinking of the film "Mrs. Brown," starring Judi Dench as the monarch and Bill Connolly as her Scottish underling, John Brown? Well, hold on. A new movie has come along exactly 20 years later with an eerily similar plot. Either Victoria was a creature of habit in her attachments or her filmmakers are.

Substitute Connolly with Ali Fazal and you get "Victoria & Abdul," a film about the then-most powerful woman on earth's second unusually intimate relationship with a commoner. In this case, a Muslim from India in 1887.

Fascinatingly, Dench is back as the monarch, two decades after she played Victoria and earned an Oscar nomination for it. It's a privilege to watch her revisit the crusty, we-are-not-amused queen, who is now in the twilight of her life. Dench is riveting, unsentimental, impatient and gloriously brittle. Sometimes all she does is offer an irritated sigh, speaking volumes. "Everyone I loved has died and I just go on and on," she cries.

Dench is well supported — the cast includes the marvelous Eddie Izzard, the late Tim Pigott-Smith and the imperious Michael Gambon — and the pomp and highly choreographed English ceremonialism is captured beautifully by director Stephen Frears, who knows a thing or two about royalty, having directed Helen Mirren in "The Queen."

There's only one major problem: The man at the center, Abdul Karim. He remains a blank canvas, his motives unexplored, his interior or domestic life uncaptured. He is called "the brown John Brown" and offers no riposte.

"Mark Felt"

As a lifetime Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and No. 2 to J. Edgar Hoover, Mark Felt was not exactly an ordinary man, but he was, it seems, a highly unlikely candidate to topple a presidency. Felt was the man behind Deep Throat, the Watergate whistleblower who led Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to the explosive truth behind that break-in. He lived only as a shadowy mystery in the popular imagination until he gave up his long-held secret in 2005, a few years before he died. By then what he represented had already transcended anything an actual human could live up to.

It's not a surprise then that the fictionalized telling of his story in "Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House " is a little underwhelming. The mundanities of the truth could hardly be as sexy as decades of intrigue and mythology enshrined in history and the enduring greatness of "All the President's Men." But director Peter Landesman ("Concussion") and star Liam Neeson nonetheless manage to weave together a fairly compelling (if disputed ) tick-tock of how it all went down from Felt's purview.

And it all started with a slight. We're introduced to Felt in his ordinary suburban home, getting ready for another day of work at the Bureau. He's a tall and soft-spoken man who hides the dirty secrets of the country, and his organization, behind a stoic poker face. A few characters at the outset tell him (read: us) how loyal and reliable and competent he is — a "golden retriever" for whomever is in power. When J. Edgar Hoover dies, Felt is passed over for that top position in favor of Nixon favorite L. Patrick Gray (Marton Csokas) — a mighty snub that sows the seed of discontentment in Felt.

RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes.

"The Mountain Between Us"

"The Mountain Between Us" is about two strangers who survive a plane crash only to end up in the unforgiving snowy Utah mountains, with no cell reception and precious little food. So they do what comes naturally. They try to eat each other.

No, no, no. Are you crazy? They fall in love — kinda, sorta, maybe. Actually, perhaps they should have tried something else because this romance novel-meets-survival story doesn't really succeed at either, despite fine performances by Kate Winslet and Idris Elba.

Based on Charles Martin's same-named novel, the film is ably directed by Hany Abu-Assad and centers on the chance meeting at an Idaho airport of a photojournalist hoping to get home in time for her wedding and a neurosurgeon needing to get back East for an important operation. An incoming storm shuts down all commercial flights and forces them to seek a charter plane, and it becomes one of the worst advertising for charter flights in history (Quick, sell your stocks).

The pilot fails to file a flight plan and then crashes after having a heart attack (thanks, Beau Bridges). The crash sequence is remarkable and we're terrifyingly trapped in the fuselage watching it unfold. Our couple — and an adorable lab owned by the pilot — emerge battered but alive, hundreds of miles from anything.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality, peril, injury images and brief strong language."

RUNNING TIME: Running time: 111 minutes.

"The Florida Project"

Not too far from the gates of the Walt Disney World Resort, where families are promised "enchanted escapes" and "fun" and "magic" and where day tickets start at a cool $99 a person, is a discount motel off a busy street called The Magic Castle.

It's painted in garish shades of lavender and amethyst right down to the street curbs. The ice machine is broken.

The washer and dryer often are too. It costs $38 a night.

And it is home for a young mother, Halley, and her 6-yearold daughter, Moonee, in director Sean Baker's "The Florida Project ," a transcendently beautiful, funny, heartwarming (and heart wrenching) tale of childhood, poverty and the broken American dream.

This is Kissimmee, Florida, and it is less than 10 miles away from that fairy tale promise of Disney. It might as well be on another planet.

Not that Moonee notices. Played by the wonderfully great newcomer Brooklynn Prince, Moonee exists is in a world of her own: A charmed childhood dreamscape of freedom and friends and devilish fun and colorful buildings shaped like oranges and soft serve cones.

Moonee is not an angel — quite the opposite. She's kind of a terror. She is not well-behaved or polite or deferential to adults. And she does some truly bad things, but you can't help but fall in love with her. She is unmistakably her age, which Baker never conceals or glosses over or exploits for mawkish story tricks.

Young childhood is so hard to get right in the movies.

Children in films are pawns that never feel true — either too poetic or perceptive or cute to be believed.

RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes.

"The Meyerowitz Stories"

Your first response to "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)" may very well be: Adam Sandler is good — REALLY good — in his sensitive, nuanced portrayal as Danny, the outsider son in the Meyerowitz brood.

The opening scene finds Danny in the driver's seat beside Eliza, his teenage daughter (Grace Van Patten), as he tries to score a parking space in New York City. A devoted father who will soon lose Eliza to college, he is a tangle of tenderness, wistfulness and pent-up rage at the wheel in this fruitless search.

That's just the beginning of a bittersweet, often very funny family portrait written and directed by Noah Baumbach ("Frances Ha," ''The Squid and the Whale"). It's brought to life by an all-star ensemble also including Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Elizabeth Marvel, Judd Hirsch and Candice Bergen.

Hoffman plays Harold, the paterfamilias of the sprawling Meyerowitz clan. A willful, grandiose sculptor plagued by failed ambitions, he molded his three adult children in sharply different ways that each still keenly feels.

Danny, a disappointment to Harold who fell flat as a musician, continues his futile effort to court his father's approval. Danny's sister Jean (Marvel) nurses the wounds of Harold's lifelong neglect. Meanwhile, their half brother Matthew (Stiller) has tried to flee Harold's smothering attention by moving to Los Angeles, where he prospers as the opposite of an artist: a top-tier financial adviser.

Of course, the Meyerowitzes have more in common than they may want to accept.

"Marshall"

Thurgood Marshall, a titan of 20th-century law and a civil rights pioneer, has until now largely eluded Hollywood's notice. Despite its title, "Marshall," too, is wary of taking on the Supreme Court justice in full, sticking to a minor case from Marshall's early career as counsel for the NAACP. That makes, for better and worse, a sometimes slight, sometimes serious courtroom drama, shot through with bright certainty in the coming triumphs for Marshall and the civil rights movement.

It's a superhero-style origin story: Thurgood, pre-"Brown v.

Board of Education," pre-black robe.

And there's something bulletproof about Marshall, as played

by Chadwick Boseman, in Reginald Hudlin's film. Boseman has launched himself as a leading man with an ambitious trio of historical African-American figures: Jackie Robinson, James Brown and now Marshall. His gift isn't in connecting deeply to these characters but in capturing an innate and unstoppable swagger. His icons are forward-moving forces of talent and charisma that no bigotry could hope to contain.

In "Marshall," the attorney is sent to Bridgeport, Connecticut, to represent a black chauffer, Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), who has been accused by his wealthy, white Greenwich socialite employer (Kate Hudson) of rape and attempted murder. Marshall, then 33, is an out-of-state attorney who needs a local lawyer to help try the case, turning to the reluctant insurance lawyer Sam Friedman (Josh Gad).

The suburban New England setting differs greatly from the Southern terrain where most civil-rights battles were fought, and where Marshall tried many of his early landmark cases. But it roils with much of the same racism. Marshall is barred from speaking in court by a judge (James Cromwell) little impressed by the NAACP's mandate to ensure black defendants get a fair trial.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mature thematic content, sexuality, violence and some strong language."

RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes.

Of course, the Meyerowitzes have more in common than they may want to accept.

"It's hard to have a relationship and a child," says Matthew, who has a checkered marital record, to his dad. "I imagine you felt that, too."

"No, not really."

"Dad, you've been married four times!"

"Three," Harold fires back. "The first one was annulled."

At that moment, Harold is married to Maureen (Emma Thompson), who, when she isn't drinking, seems inherently a ditz.

"Where's the gourmet hummus?" Harold

asks her as he searches through the kitchen.

"Upstairs," she replies, to which he responds reasonably, "Why?" These "Stories" are divided into five titled sections beginning with, yes, "Danny Meyerowitz was trying to park." But as the action stretches over several months, with many complications and cross-currents, an overarching question persists: Is it ever too late to stake out one's own boundaries and nail down one's identity?

That task is perhaps most difficult for Harold, who, now, in the autumn of his life and career, has more trouble than ever with the painful possibility that his achievements as a sculptor were no greater than the insufficient recognition he received for them.

"Happy Death Day" is a winner

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Few things are as reliable as the surge in horror film programming during the month of October. We inch closer to All Hallow's Eve each day and it seems that every Friday gives us a new scary picture to help psych ourselves up for the spookiest holiday of the year. Dependable, sure, but equally few things are as invariably unpredictable as the horror genre. It's produced comedy, action, gore, and thrills in perfect measure - using tropes we know and love to still salvage uniquely enjoyable pictures every once in a while. "Bone Tomahawk", for instance, was a great Western horror film (featuring cowboys and cannibals!) a few years ago. This week, the hot ticket is "Happy Death Day" a movie I was jazzed

to see after its incredible trailer debuted several months back. It's "Groundhog Day", essentially, but with elements of "Scream" and "Friday the 13th" peppered into its knowing/"meta" format. This one is a winner.

Cranky Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) is a pampered rich girl who flaunts her sorority status and good looks to demean all of those who get in her way. She's mean spirited to most of the denizens of Bayfield University that she deems beneath her. I would imagine her hateful side is partly because her name is Tree, but it's short for Theresa, so that probably is of her own doing. Tree's real problem is that her birthday is about to be her last one. She awakens in a foreign dorm room and proceeds to destroy the poor fella she picked up at the bar the night before,

Carter (Israel Broussard). That he was a gentleman and didn't take advantage of her drunken morals is of little consequence. After her walk of shame back to the sorority house, Tree interacts with any number of future suspects as she goes through the final day of her life before being murdered that night by The Bayfield Baby Killer, a hooded maniac that hides behind a one-toothed, Kewpie doll baby mask. It's a harmless image that belies the same gruesome intentions as Ghostface or Jason Voorhies's hockey mask.

And then she wakes up to repeat is all over again, hence "Groundhog Day", which the film self-mockingly acknowledges in a later scene.

Reliving her death each day is a real bummer for a party girl like Tree. She's desperate for a break in the monotony when she first enlists Carter to help her solve the

mystery. His aw-shucks approach to knocking suspects off her list is aided by the movie's gift of memory to Tree. She remembers every detail of each death, feels the injury of every stabbing and bludgeoning, and grows weaker each morning.

So whodunit? Carter convinces her that if they find the murderer and stop them, Tree will eventually wake up to a different sunrise than the same hideous one she's looping through. Her killer could be anyone from her catty chapter leader (Rachel Matthews), her mousy roommate (Ruby Modine), a disappointed widower father (Jason Bayle), a closeted ex (Caleb Spillyards), her married lover (Charles Aitken), or his wife (Laura Clifton). Because "Happy Death Day" continuously plays homage to other, better films, it even includes an escaped sociopath (Rob Mello)

in the cast, just to keep things interesting and add a dash of red herring ending to the spicy mixture.

This take on time travel is a gas and just right for the holiday season.

Spooky chuckles are a hallmark of the films from Blumhouse Productions, a newer shingle that is making waves about the low budget end of the Hollywood spectrum.

Hits like "The Gift", "Insidious", and the "Purge" franchise have been smartly partnered with the best film released so far this year ("Get Out") and 2014's Best Picture nominee, "Whiplash".

They're on a hot streak.

"Happy Death Day" runs 96 minutes and is rated PG-13 for violence/terror, crude sexual content, language, some drug material, and partial nudity. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Persecuted in Egypt, Christians seek a better life

By BRETT SHOLTIS York Daily Record YORK, Pa. (AP) — A photo of a woman in Ragaa Thabet's living room hangs on the wall next to one of a pensive, bearded man — Pope Shenouda III of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.

The woman in the photo is smiling. Her face is a bit pixelated, as if the photo was enlarged.

It was the most recent photo Thabet could find of her sister-in law, who died of an unknown illness in 2015 at age 32.

Thabet and her husband, Hany Thomas, moved from Egypt in 2009, and they have missed a lot of funerals. For her, the photo is a daily reminder not only of someone she loves

and misses, but also of the sacrifice her family has made in the hope that her children will have a better life in the U.S. In the living room, her two boys, Phelo and Mena, watch a Transformers cartoon.

They've never been to Egypt. They know their grandparents as video images on Skype and Facebook.

Thabet and Thomas are not alone in York, however. They are among the 60 or so families of Coptic Christians who moved to York County to escape religious persecution in Egypt. The migration is part of a broader movement of Copts that began at urban centers in places such as New Jersey and Southern California. Since then, Copts have established churches in most states.

Many of those Copts came to the U.S. to escape escalating violence in Egypt. Some have refugee status. Others came through a lottery system that allows a certain number of people to immigrate to the U.S. each year.

Thomas and Thabet moved here to raise a family. But the move to the U.S. has brought new challenges to raise their children in their faith.

"Some days, it's very hard," Thabet said. "I do it for my children, not myself."

A history of persecution The Coptic Orthodox Church was founded

by St. Mark in the years following the death of Jesus Christ and broke free from the Roman Catholic Church about 400 years later. The church shares Catholic traditions including

baptism and confession. There are also differences: For example, priests may marry, and Copts don't consider their pope to be infallible.

Copts, along with a small number of other Christians, make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 94.6 million population.

Thabet and Thomas have cross tattoos on their wrists_a centuries-old tradition among Copts. In Egypt, their tattoos and their names marked them as Christians. In addition, like all Egyptians, their religion was listed on their mandatory, government-issued ID cards.

Copts have lived in Egypt since their religion was born, but in recent decades, they've faced increasing violence from Islamic fundamentalist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Recipes Crustless Spinach Quiche Makes 4 Servings Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 40 min Ingredients 2 teaspoons canola oil 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped 1 10-ounce package frozen chopped

spinach, thawed and drained 1 1/2 cups grated light Cheddar cheese 6 large egg whites 1 large egg 1/3 cup fat free cottage cheese 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg Directions Drizzle oil in nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add onion; sauté for 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add spinach and stir for 3 additional minutes, or until spinach is dry. Set aside. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. For the yogurt sauce: 2 cups low-fat plain yogurt 1 cup chopped cilantro 1 teaspoon ground cumin Directions Heat cream cheese in large skillet over medium heat until soft. Stir in chicken and 1/2 cup of the salsa; mix well. Add 1/2 cup shredded cheese; stir until melted. Spoon about 1/3 cup of the chicken mixture onto each tortilla; roll up. Place seam side down in 12x8-inch baking dish. Top with remaining salsa and cheese. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes, or until heated through. Boogie's Restaurant and Bar in Maryville

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Occasionally I speak with a class at SIUE about “You Gotta Eat.” I attempt to teach them how to construct a food column, but mostly I rattle off tales of my food adventures of where I’ve eaten. At the end of my time I let the students tell me cool places they’ve been that I can visit in the future and I’ll make mental notes of places that I think may be worth looking into.

That brings me to my latest stop — Boogie’s Restaurant and Bar in Maryville.

One of the students bragged about the awesomeness of the wings at Boogie’s, so I had to check it out. My buddy Mike and I visited for dinner recently and definitely weren’t disappointed.

Located at 2082 Vadalabene Dr. in Maryville, Boogie’s looks like a typical bar and grill. Walk through the entrance and you’ll see it split into two sides, a dining room on the left and a bar area on the right with plenty of tables for patrons. Mike and I settled in at a high table in the back corner of the bar and were ready to see what Boogie’s was all about.

There were six TVs hanging in the bar side airing sporting events and the walls are pretty cluttered with photos, posters and beer specials, with mainly sports and beer themed items.

We started our visit with a couple of large draught Blue Moons with orange slices and large dinner salads.

The salads were monstrous and weren’t just overloaded with lettuce. There were plenty of goodies in them with cheese, onions, tomatoes and carrots. They were very good.

Next it was onto the chicken wings. This is Boogie’s bread and butter, listed as “famous” on the menu. We went with the double dipped garlic parmesan version.

When garlic parmesan wings are done right I think they are delicious. The problem I find sometimes is they are either extremely greasy or void of much of a garlic taste.

That’s not the case at Boogie’s.

We ordered the 16 count wings, while they also offer eight or 24. The sauce was nearly perfect, definitely not too greasy and

popping with garlicky goodness in every bite. Unfortunately I thought the meat was a little dry, but they were still really good. The sauce put them over the top and they’re definitely worth an order if you visit Boogie’s. They also offer hot, barbecue, teriyaki and sweet chili versions.

Next it was on to the main event. I ordered an eight-ounce filet mignon with a baked sweet potato with brown sugar and butter lathered on it, while Mike chose the half order of white fried chicken also with a baked sweet potato with all the fixings.

Mike raved about the greatness of the fried chicken. They were giant, golden brown pieces that were easily classified as GBD (golden, brown and delicious).

As for my steak, it was also very scrumptious. I ordered it medium well and it was cooked perfectly. It was very tender and juicy and owned a delectable taste. Of

course it was wrapped in bacon also to put the finishing touches on it. Everything tastes better with bacon.

I’ll be honest though, as good as we thought the steak and chicken was, the allstar of our main courses were the sweet potatoes. I’d say it was the highlight of my night.

As the butter and brown sugar melted in, I was salivating just looking at it. Once I took a bite I was totally stoked. The potato was so moist and rich in flavor and then toss in the butter and brown sugar and it tasted more like a dessert with its level of sweetness.

There is plenty more to check out on the menu, too. It’s broken down into a starter menu, salads, sandwiches and dinner entrees. Boogie’s also offers daily specials.

There are chicken livers and gizzards as appetizers if that’s your thing. I was intrigued by the mini chicken tacos, fried green tomatoes and seafood-stuffed mushrooms. The Boogie’s Snyder looked good on the sandwich portion, consisting of thinly sliced roast beef, ham, swiss cheese and mayo served on a hoagie. The buffalo chicken and philly cheese steak wraps grabbed my attention, too. On the dinner entrees portion of the menu I liked the ribeye, pork chops, grilled Asian sea bass and the seafood alfredo.

I’ve been pretty disheartened with some of my latest “You Gotta Eat” stops, so to be honest Boogie’s was just a breath of fresh air. It was a very enjoyable dinner and I definitely recommend Boogie’s Restaurant and Bar as a place to go when you gotta eat.

Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd.

Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices.

Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant T h e p i z z a h e re i s a m a z i n g .

They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies.

During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers.

Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap?

1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment.

Lotawata Creek Southern Grill 311 Salem Pl. Fairview Heights Fatten yourself up at this joint.

The menu is ridiculously huge and the portions are even bigger. Get your own plate of fries for a side, or a bucket of onion rings. It offers a creative sandwich portion of the menu and great southern-style dishes, try the Mac Daddy Burger.

You won’t go away hungry here, trust me.

1818 Chophouse 210 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville This is a great place to grab a steak diinner, that is their signature dish. A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the

dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus.

Sybergs Old Dorsett Rd. Maryland Heights A St. Louis chain restaurant where you can’t go wrong. Check out their awesome selection of pizzas and hot wings and their house-made sauces are fantastic.

Be adventurous and try the shark bites, they are delicious.

Alton It’s a great neighborhood bar a n d re s t a u r a n t . S i t a t t h e b a r and have a few drinks with a friendly staff and patrons. As for the food, get your hands on the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich ever and check out the monster onion rings, too.
