More than 5,000 pounds of candy were collected last year during “The Great Candy Exchange.”
“The Great Candy Exchange” planned
For the Edge If children across the St. Louis region consumed all of the candy collected on Halloween night, local smiles could turn into a real fright fest. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is therefore encouraging children to exchange portions of unopened Halloween candy for chances to win a variety of different prize packages that encourage healthy habits and active play at “The Great Candy Exchange.” The event will feature an actionpacked afternoon of healthy fun on Sunday, Nov. 5, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission to HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is free during this event. Each exchanged pound of candy will be worth one raffle ticket for the prize drawings. The more candy exchanged, the more chances kids will have to win prize packages, like the Ultimate Attractions Package which includes a Meccanoid Personal Robot. Classrooms, clubs, organizations and teams can also get involved. The school or group with the most candy collected will win an all school assembly. “Halloween is synonymous with the over-consump-
tion of candy, and while it is okay to indulge for an evening, it’s simply not a good idea to have a sack full of sugar sitting around until Thanksgiving,” commented Shannon Woodcock, president and CEO of HealthWorks! Kids' Museum St. Louis. “We encourage children to pick a few of their favorite candies to eat in moderation and exchange the rest. Further sweetening the deal, all collected candy will be sent to military troops with toothbrushes in an effort to showcase our appreciation and spread smiles.” This free community event will also enable attendees to gain access to the museum’s interactive exhibits and special programming, including “Healthy Horrors,” which features grossly healthy activities. Kids are encouraged to come in costume. Healthy snacks will be served and there will be a free photo booth. “The Great Candy Exchange” is made possible thanks to Delta Dental of Missouri, Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Dentistry of Sunset Hills Arnold and Wentzville Locations, Schnucks, USO Missouri and Fun Photo Events. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is located at 1100 Macklind Ave, near the Saint Louis Science Center.
Admission is $7 per person and free for those two-yearsold and younger. Parking is free. To learn more about “The Great Candy Exchange” or for general information about the museum, visit www.hwstl.org, find the organization on Facebook or follow them on Twitter using the handle @ youcantoucan. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis came into existence as a result of efforts to expand The Delta Dental Health Theatre to address broader, overall health issues after Delta Dental of Missouri became a major corporate sponsor in 2004. Those plans evolved and grew more ambitious over the next several years, ultimately leading to the closure of the original theatre on Laclede’s Landing in downtown St. Louis after 38 years so it could be housed in the new, dramatically expanded museum. The Delta Dental Health Theatre was originally organized as a program under the Foundation of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society in 1977. In 2002, it was incorporated as an independent 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis opened in May of this year.

Jessica, Josh and Eddie Wood outside their Edwardsville home.
A new mom in a new town
By JESSICA WOOD For The Edge This time last year my partner Josh and I were living in New York City and had just discovered we were expecting our first child. Yay! And yikes. Suddenly we were faced with the decision to remain in the Big Apple, where we had a total of 2 friends, or return to our families in the Midwest. Ultimately we decided that in case it does take a village to raise a child, we’d better head back home…plus we weren’t sure how one gets a baby home from the hospital in NYC. The subway? Uber? As a middle ground between Josh’s family in St. Louis and mine in Bunker Hill, Edwardsville is where we landed. During my sixth month of pregnancy we moved into our picket-fence house in downtown, and admittedly, I pre-
pared myself for boredom. But much to my surprise, a quick Google-search revealed that just a few blocks from our new home was a business offering prenatal yoga classes. The business’s name, MOMentum Health & Wellness… emphasis on the “MOM”. Yoga took place in a dimly lit, sanctuary of a room. The yoga instructor Shannon began class with a thought-provoking question about motherhood, and the other moms-to-be opened up about their wishes and fears. The downward-dogs were great, but it was our dialogue that left me with a feeling of hope about our return to the Midwest. Not only were we going to have our families in our life, but I think we might also make friends! In the months to follow, the people of Edwardsville continued to make me, Josh, and my growing belly feel
welcome. From the staff at Frye Chiropractic who helped me waddle less, to the hostess at Cleveland Heath who in my last days of pregnancy gave me a cherry pie to coax the baby out (I went into labor the next morning. Coincidence?). Our son Eddie is now a few months old, and instead of strolling through Central Park amongst hundreds of strangers, he gets to stroll the bike paths of Edwardsville with his new baby buddies from yoga. And he gets to meet his grandparents at one of the downtown diners for breakfast. And when he goes to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, he gets to run into people who know his name. Yes, I think it’s safe to say we made the right choice by moving back to the Midwest. We may have left the big city, but in Edwardsville, Illinois, we found our village.

A photo of an empty and decaying stadium by Sue Rakers is an example of what will be on display in the EAC’s “Void: Places Without People,” exhibit.
EAC now hosting “Void: Places Without People” By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge The Edwardsville Arts Center opens its next exhibit, “Void: Places Without People” on Friday, Oct. 20. This juried show will run until Nov. 17 and feature 24 artists and 40 pieces of artwork.
Jason Bly, the curator of “Void: Places without People” wrote about the meaning behind this exhibit. “Everyday, we gather in the public places we have created. The purposes of these places are to promote community, share in conversation, be entertained, learn, travel, engage in commerce, and grow. In other words, public places are ideally locales where like-
minded people gather and participate in a greater system,” Bly wrote. “These indoor and outdoor microcosms essentially nurture the human condition. We inhabit these places for a short while and play the role the place intends for us: employee, consumer, worshipper, leader, student, teacher, etc. We change who we are in these roles as the structures change
by our visiting there.’ What occurs when these places are empty of any human experience? Are they asleep, waiting to be awoken again? Are they completely deserted and left to waste? What had happened to the inhabitants? Was it a choice to not visit or something more ominous? Continued on Page 7

Art Continued from Page 6 “Void: Places Without People is an exhibition showcasing these empty places, beautiful and striking in their silence,” Bly further notes. “All works thematically or visually adhere to imagery that evokes places that are usually full with human involvement, yet empty due a variety of scenarios, real or imagined.” Several of the 24 artists in this show are from Edwardsville and the St. Louis metro area, but there are also artists participating that live as far away as California, Wisconsin, Maryland, and Virginia. Bly pointed out that the works were chosen based on various factors - craft, thematic elements, and overall formal qualities. “It was interesting to see interpretations of the theme through the hands of many artists, but also in a variety of media,” he said. “In the show there are paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculptures, and mixed media.” Thad Duhigg (Professor of Sculpture at SIUE) served as co-juror of this show. Featured concurrently in the DeToye Student Gallery will be artwork made by Edwardsville High School art students and Advanced Placement Students. People planner Illinois bicentennial children’s art contest planned
Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial
year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit. ly/ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age rang-

“Marshall”
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
Thurgood Marshall, a titan of 20th-century law and a civil rights pioneer, has until now largely eluded Hollywood’s notice. Despite its title, “Marshall,” too, is wary of taking on the Supreme Court justice in full, sticking to a minor case from Marshall’s early career as counsel for the NAACP. That makes, for better and worse, a sometimes slight, sometimes serious courtroom drama, shot through with bright certainty in the coming triumphs for Marshall and the civil rights movement. It’s a superhero-style origin story: Thurgood, pre-”Brown v. Board of Education,” pre-black robe. And there’s something bulletproof about Marshall, as played by Chadwick Boseman, in Reginald Hudlin’s film. Boseman has launched himself as a leading man with an ambitious trio of historical African-American figures: Jackie Robinson, James Brown and now Marshall. His gift isn’t in connecting deeply to these characters but in capturing an innate and unstoppable swagger. His icons are forwardmoving forces of talent and charisma that no bigotry could hope to contain. In “Marshall,” the attorney is sent to Bridgeport, Connecticut, to represent a black chauffer, Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), who has been accused by his wealthy, white Greenwich socialite employer (Kate Hudson) of rape and attempted murder. Marshall, then 33, is an out-of-state attorney who needs a local lawyer to help try the case, turning to the reluctant insurance lawyer Sam Friedman (Josh Gad). RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “mature thematic content, sexuality, violence and some strong language.” RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Thor: Ragnarok”
In the stand-alone films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor always seemed to get the short end of the stick. The Thor films were never as popular as Iron Man, and didn’t gain steam like Captain America. They were perhaps a little too serious and a little too dull — none of which was the fault of star Chris Hemsworth, whose performances in the role have been so seamless and charming that he almost doesn’t get enough credit. But “Thor: Ragnarok” has been touted as a different take on the God of Thunder. Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Co. signed up a voice-y director in New Zealand’s Taika Waititi, whose riotous vampire mockumentary “What We Do In The Shadows” displayed a unique comedic sensibility. They took away Thor’s hammer, gave him a haircut, added some Led Zeppelin and told the set designer the more neon rainbows the better. The results are pretty decent, though perhaps not the total departure that had been hyped. The bones of the story are preposterous as ever. It turns out Thor has a long lost older sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), who his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins, who appears to have shot for about two hours) locked away because she was so dangerous. An event happens that releases Hela to the world. She’s really strong, like stronger than Thor strong, and really angry and basically punches Thor into another dimension and she heads off to Asgard to take the throne. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive material.” RUNNING TIME: 130 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Wonderstruck”
For devoted fans of certain prestige directors, it’s always a little disarming to see them make a true children’s film. Expectations have to be readjusted in real time as you submit to something else, something different. That exercise can yield disappointment, but sometimes, maybe even most of the time, the results are transcendent. Think about Alfonso Cuaron’s “A Little Princess” or Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo.” When a master of cinema decides to look at the world from a child’s perspective, we should all line up. “Wonderstruck,” the latest from “Carol,” ‘’I’m Not There” and “Far From Heaven” director Todd Haynes is very much for the young — for those who still find pleasure in tactile simplicity, who pour over pop-up books and paper dolls, who fantasize about the past, and whose imaginations are richer, more elaborate and darker than most adults care to remember. “Wonderstruck” is adapted from a Brian Selznick book, the same author of “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” which provided the basis for Scorsese’s “Hugo.” It intercuts the stories of two children, Rose, a young girl in 1927 and Ben, a young boy in 1977. Rose, played by the magnificent newcomer Millicent Simmonds, is deaf. We see her world in black and white and without sounds. Carter Burwell’s beautiful score is our only respite from complete silence. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “for thematic elements and smoking.” RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes. Movies “Wonderstruck” is a beautiful fable By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press For devoted fans of certain prestige directors, it’s always a little disarming to see them make a true children’s film. “Wonderstruck ,” the latest from “Carol,” ‘’I’m Not There” and “Far From Heaven” director Todd Haynes is very much for the young — for those who still find pleasure in tactile simplicity, who pour over pop-up books and paper dolls, who fantasize about the past, and whose imaginations are richer, more elaborate and darker than most adults care to remember. And while things are pretty as a picture — an intentionally artificial rendering of that time — Rose is in agony and unable to hear or communicate with others except with a notepad. She doesn’t talk, and hasn’t yet been taught sign language. While she oscillates between frustration and annoyance with those around her, she finds some joy in cutting out pictures of and seeing films with her favorite silent movie star Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore). Meanwhile, in 1977, where every color seems to have a dusty brown undertone, Ben (Oakes Fegley, who also starred in last summer’s “Pete’s Dragon”) is having nightmares and missing his mother (Michelle Williams), a local Minnesota librarian who died recently in a car accident. He carries around a folded up copy of the newspaper clipping in his pocket. He is also isolated from the world

Both children are destined for an adventure soon. Ben finds a clue that perhaps his father, whose identity he doesn’t know, is tied to a book store in New York City. And Rose sees that Lillian is set to perform in a play in the city. And both non-hearing kids set out in their respective times to the big city to find what they’re looking for, and find peace at the American Museum of Natural
History. The 1977 thread definitely plays second fiddle to the sumptuous and storybook-like saga of Rose in 1927, which is in no small part due to Simmonds’ deeply moving performance. Together, though, it feels at times like a stitched together Frankenstein of a film — a grand idea that never quite comes together until it’s forced to in the very final moments. Indeed, the last 15 minutes are undeniably moving. Getting there, however earnest a journey it may be, is a bit of a tedious exercise
punctuated by moments of humor and joy and beauty. Still, for a kid in this age of digital devices and content disconnected from experience, “Wonderstruck” could be its own sort of treasure — a call to explore the real world, to submit to the magic of museums and the enchantment of a beautiful book. “Wonderstruck,” an Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “for thematic elements and smoking.”

“Victoria & Albert” should appeal to all By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Dame Judi Dench is a national treasure. For Great Britain, obviously, but I how I wish she were an American. We need our own cultural leaders to remind us that great work and great fame can also be had by sweet people. I departed from the onslaught of five new releases this week (five!?) to capture some screen time with “Victoria & Abdul”, a picture that’s been in limited release for a few weeks now. It’s a pedigreed work and one that all guests of a certain age will love. It’s a comedy-drama, the best kind of drama. It’s also a story that started more than twenty years ago. Let me share. When Dench first became a big movie star in the mid-90s, later in her life than most in her profession, she starred in a movie called “Mrs. Brown” by director John Madden. It was a story about the friendship between Queen Victoria and a Scottish manservant
named John (Billy Connolly) that came to be after the passing of her beloved husband, Prince Albert. Victoria suffered ill health, especially in her senior years, and from great melancholy when the Prince died. His valet was retained by the household to cheer her up and John did just that for almost ten years before his own death. I bring this up because the story so closely parallels the plot of “Victoria & Abdul”, what is being referred to as an unofficial sequel to “Mrs. Brown”. Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) was a low-level clerk in India when he was summoned by London to present a tribute gift to the Queen. He left his home and his family behind for a long journey with fellow representative Mohammed (Adeel Akhatar) that changed both of their lives forever. Chastised never to make eye contact with the nobles, Abdul instantly breaks protocol, much to delight of the ailing monarch. She bids he remain a part of her court and decrees him to be her
personal secretary while Mohammed is left to suffer the indignant weather as a doorman at Windsor Castle. The Queen may be a little dotty in her advancing years, but she does not suffer from lack of curiosity. She uses Abdul’s life and culture to broaden her own. Together, they go for walks in the garden and talk about his life as a Muslim Indian during a time when this was not a necessarily happy contingent within her empire. He teaches her to write and speak Urdu, his native language. He consults on construction projects in her many royal houses that involve art and architecture from his home in Agra (home of the Taj Mahal, for you trivia nerds out there!). For more than ten years, Abdul becomes a confidant, advisor, and friend to Victoria. This is all met with great disdain by the other members of her inner circle, including her doctor (Paul Higgins), the Prime Minister (Michael Gambon), and her son, Bertie (Eddie Izzard), who would later
become King Edward VII upon her death in 1901. While “Victoria & Abdul” may read like a history lesson - and a good one at that - it’s also deliriously funny and easy to watch, hallmarks of the work of director Stephen Frears. Some of the more charming bits are the interplay between Western and Islamic cultures when the throne has Abdul’s family move to join him in the UK. The truth of the story behind this film was hidden for many years. Bertie had all of the influence of Abdul destroyed when his mother passed and only the discovery of his journals by his children brought a spotlight to this very personal and intimate relationship between a commoner and a royal. I don’t have to tell you why that story appeals to every single one of us. “Victoria & Abdul” runs 111 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and language. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.
“Thor: Ragnarok” a different take BY LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press In the stand-alone films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor always seemed to get the short end of the stick. They took away Thor ’s hammer, gave him a haircut, added some Led Zeppelin and told the set designer the more neon rain-
bows the better. The movie literally splits in two at this point. Poor Blanchett, who has gone full vamp as Hela, is good as always but how lame it must be to be in the “fun” Thor movie and have to play one of the most blandly written villains ever. While she’s off waging her deathly serious takeover, Thor gets to join an irreverent comedy sideshow
on the planet Sakaar — a sort of wasteland at the end of the universe run by a Grade-A weirdo who calls himself Grandmaster, played, fittingly, by Jeff Goldblum. It’s this section that is pretty amusing and where Waititi’s irreverence really gets to shine with pratfalls and witty writing. It’s no surprise that this is right up Goldblum’s alley, but the real delight is Hemsworth who knows just how to subvert the Thor character without turning him into a total mockery. He’s a real comedic talent, which audiences got a taste of in “Ghostbusters.” And Tessa Thompson is fantastic as Valkyrie, a hard drinkin’ fighter with a secret past she’d rather forget. I imagine “Thor: Ragnarok” is one that might improve on subsequent viewings, when you have a chance to relax with the jokes divorced from the pressure of juggling the silly/serious plot. But it’s a fairly flawed movie on the whole with egregious tonal shifts. Some of the gags go on too long with
the Hulk with too little payoff and sometimes it seems as though there’s a mandate that every 25 minutes there will be a big fight no matter what. One particular army of the dead sequence seemed like it could have been lifted from a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie — which is not the most flattering comparison. While Waititi’s energy and wit is apparent in the film, it still feels as though he had to operate from the same Marvel “base flavor” and was allowed on occasion to sprinkle a few of his own original toppings on. “Thor: Ragnarok” is the most fun of the Thor movies by a long shot, but it is still very much a Thor movie for better or worse. “Thor,” a Walt Disney Studios release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive material.” Running time: 130 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Lake of the Ozarks combine two favorite pastimes For The Edge Stacey King will be ready to shout “Fore!” when he steps onto the golf course for the third annual Missouri Invitational Fishing and Golf Championship, hosted by Old Kinderhook and Bassing Bob and sponsored by Ulrich Marine and Duncan Diamonds and Fine Jewelry.
The event, which will be November 14-17 at Old Kinderhook Resort and Golf Course on Lake of the Ozarks, will be a hybrid of a bass tournament and a golf tournament. King can handle the fishing part. He is one of the nation’s top bass pros, having found success on both the B.A.S.S. and the FLW trails. But the golf part? Well, you’d
better look out when he steps up to the tee, King advises. “This will be the first time I’ve ever golfed,” said King, 68, who lives in Reeds Spring, Mo. “I’ve just never had any interest in it. I spend all my time outdoors, either fishing or hunting. “I was hoping to get a little practice in before I get over there. But I have some big
(fishing) tournaments right up until then, so I’m going to have to go in cold.” The Missouri Invitational was the brainchild of Bob Renken, executive director of Old Kinderhook, and Bob Bueltmann, who runs the www.BassingBob.com website that chronicles all things bass fishing at Lake of the Ozarks. Lake Continued from Page 14 They thought it would be fun to have an event that combines two of the Lake of the Ozarks’ biggest drawing cards - bass fishing and golf. So they organized an event that is scored by fishermen’s performance on not only the water, but on the links as well. This year’s event, presented by Ulrich Marine and Duncan Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, will start Nov. 14 with a dinner and auction. The amateurs who have signed up for the event will bid on which pro fisherman they want to be paired with. Those teams will fish together on Wednesday, Nov. 15, and Friday, Nov. 17. They will be paired with a local PGA pro on the golf course Tuesday, Nov. 16. Fishermen will receive bonus points on the golf course. They will earn ½ pound of bass for each par, 1 pound for a birdie and 2 pounds for an eagle. Some of the pro fishermen, such as Marcus Sykora and Mark Wiese, are accomplished golfers. Others such as King will try the game for the first time when they compete in the tournament. Dion Hibdon, legendary bass fisherman, was in that boat during the first tournament. “I had never even picked up a golf club,” Hibdon said. “But it was a lot of fun. I even made a few good shots.” Sykora and his amateur partner, Matt Capstick, excelled on both land and water in last year’s event. On the last day, they came to the scales with five bass weighing an eye-opening 25.20 pounds to seal the victory. They split $15,000. It was a good investment for Capstick. He made the high bid of $3,100 in the auction and immediately chose Sykora, who is one of the top bass fishermen on the big lake and a good golfer as well. Three former FLW All-American champions - Sykora, Jeremy Lawyer and Brian Maloney - will be part of this year’s field. Other top pros, guides and local bass fishing standouts will be included. All activities will be based at Old Kinderhook, a top-rated golf course and resort near Camdenton, Mo. Spectators are welcome to view weigh-ins for the bass tournament or to follow golfers on the course. Weigh-ins for the bass fishing will be at

Gemini Giant has been saved For the Edge Tully Garrett and Holly Barker have officially purchased the Gemini Giant/ Launching Pad as of October 17, 2017. The famous muffler man statue and drive-in restaurant will remain at their original location at 810 East Baltimore Street (Route 66) in Wilmington, Illinois. The restaurant dates to 1960 under the original name of Dairy Delite, and in 1965 was renamed Launching Pad, becoming home to the Gemini Giant, a fiberglass “Muffler Man” sporting a space helmet and rocket ship. It is a remnant of our fascination with space travel in the 1960s. New owners Tully Garrett and Holly Barker describe themselves as “secondchance soulmates.” They both lost their spouses to cancer in the last several years. “We were both living the American dream and we both had our lives crash in on us due to the loss of our spouses,” said Barker. According to Barker, Garrett owns an insurance agency that has been in his family for 55 years. Tully was also in the music industry, and his extensive music memorabilia collection will be on display at the Launching Pad in a mini-museum. Tully has a real affinity to classic cars and car shows and he plans on hosting car shows at the Launching Pad and wants to partner with local business owners to help bring in the community to make this a huge success. Barker started working in restaurants the day she turned 16 and continued to work through high school to afford a trip to England and thus her love for travel adventure was born. Continued on Page 19

Giant Continued from Page 18 She is “so excited to embrace the travel and tourism industry here in Illinois.” Holly describes herself as a world traveler having lived in three different countries and travelled extensively. Barker has worked at a broad spectrum of restaurants, including a BBQ restaurant in North Carolina where she is from, all the way to fine dining establishments. She earned a minor in Food Service Management with a BS degree in Health Promotion from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Her first job out of college was working for PYA Monarch Food Service Distribution which later became US Food Service. She left the food service industry in 1998 to join the pharmaceutical industry where she worked for Abbott Laboratories with its home base close to Chicago. Holly retired from the industry in 2015 after her husband passed away from cancer in 2014 and moved home to establish Grief Anonymous and the Grief Resource Network for grieving people in crisis. Grief Anonymous, is an online grief support organization with 70K+ membership with 60 online volunteer administrators and a Facebook page that has a million views a month and is growing rapidly. According to Barker, Holly and Tully met in one such online group for widowers and widows. They became instant online friends for months, and later when they met in person, “the two fell instantly in love.” Holly says the purchasing of the Gemini Giant/Launching Pad “offers them a genuine opportunity for personal happiness. Tully gets his car shows and music and to eat great food…Holly gets her back room for community events and the opportunity to meet people within her network…the opportunity through her kitchen to create what the town of Wilmington longs for as well as a new business model for restaurants where everyone shares in the success.” With the Grief Resource Network, Holly plans on bringing her skills to the Launching Pad and helping with the homeless crisis in Chicago, utilizing the food trucks and a percentage of the restaurants
profits to aid in her cause to feed the hungry. The organization will house itself in the back of the Launching Pad. The front of the building will provide “the full experience of historical nostalgia and the great food and experience everyone is hoping for,” said Barker. “The restoration of the Launching Pad to its original glory and intent is paramount, with the added new benefits of our community projects. We will be starting renovations on the exterior of the building and then moving in phases on the inside of the building during the winter months. We hope to be ready by late spring of 2018.” However, Garrett explained that they bought the building “as is” and do not have knowledge yet of the extensive repairs that
are needed due to the building staying vacant for five years. “What is there now is ‘pot luck’ as to what works and what doesn’t in terms of the kitchen equipment, freezers, HVAC, and electrical so to project what we can do and when can do it will be better described as we know what we have to repair. We will build our cash flow through food trucks and merchandise sales that will then be reinvested into the renovations. In essence, the town and visitors will have a hand at ‘Operation Launch the Pad’. said Tully. “This is fantastic news for Wilmington and the annual Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor event that includes the community,” said Debyjo Ericksen, Route 66 Miles of Possibility conference organizer. “We are
excited to have Cory Jobe introduce the owners at the press conference on Friday.” “The Gemini Giant is one of the top five Route 66 attractions in the state,” said Bill Kelly, Executive Director of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway. “We are glad to see it remain in Wilmington and get the attention it deserves from the new owners. The Byway wishes them the best of success.” To register for the Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference, please visit route66milesofpossibility.com. November 4 2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series Opening Yvonne Osei: Tailored Landscapes For Laumeier’s 2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series, conceptual artist Yvonne Osei creates a large-scale photo installation to occupy the breadth and width of the indoor gallery, constructing an environment where textiles create landscape. Inspired by both the cultural and physical landscapes of the Park, Osei weaves design motifs from her home country of Ghana into her photographic and videographic documentation of the Park to create new and unique patterns for Laumeier. Using her textural understanding of fashion design to mold and manipulate an adhesive fabric, Osei creates an environment that uses the architecture of the gallery as figure and form. With Tailored Landscapes, Osei continues her inquiry utilizing the import of textiles as a medium to celebrate diversity in culture and in nature. Exhibition opens Saturday, November 4, 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. in the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center at Laumeier Sculpture Park, 12580 Rott Road, Saint Louis, Missouri. Free. Dining Delights The Edge's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Foundry Public House 126 N. Main St. Edwardsville A hip newer spot on the Edwardsville food scene, visit here to get your gourmet burger fix and relax with some friends. Great burgers, including the J-Bird topped with a sunny side up egg. The chicken wings are pretty good, too. Try the sweet heat, they aren't really spicy, more of a sweet chili taste. If you're looking for a unique experience check out the salmon reuben. It will confuse your palate at first, but you won't be disappointed. It's small, so can get a little packed, but has friendly service and a pretty good craft beer menu to pass the time. The Original Pancake House 8817 Ladue Rd. St. Louis If you're looking for a top notch breakfast place, this is it. Literally some of the best bacon I've ever had. We're talking fat slices and juicy as heck. It could almost be called pork belly. The bacon pancakes are the way to go, with chunks of bacon blanketing buttermilk pancakes and topped with whipped butter and warm maple syrup.
The hash browns are top notch, too, maybe the best I've had. Get there quick, it's only open 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and it gets quite busy. There are locations around the country, but only in Ladue and Chesterfield locally. Champaign is the next closest. Three Kings Public House 6307 Delmar Blvd. The Loop Pretty cool pub in the heart of The Loop. Head in to try some good craft beers on draft during happy hour, or grab a great meal. The mussels and fries is one of their signature dishes on the appetizer menu. Make sure to check out the buffalo chicken toasted ravioli, served with Sriracha sauce, they are outstanding. You can't go wrong with the muffuletta, which comes in a quarter, half and full sandwich. I recommend the quarter, this sucker is a monster. Cool, laid back, old school pub atmosphere and includes plenty of seating. Bogart's Smokehouse 1627 S. 9th St. Soulard Outstanding barbecue joint, no wonder it tops lists for the region when they come out. It's small, so you may have to wait in line, but it's worth it. They don't do anything fancy, they just do it up right. The ribs and brisket are top notch and the baked beans are
the best I've had. They put them in the bottom of the smoker and let the juices from the meats drip down, creating a sensational flavor. Their burnt ends and smoked pastrami are very popular. You better go early if you want to get a taste of them. Check out their
delicious sweet sauce, the Sweet Maegan Ann. Tucanos Brazilian Grill 1520 S. 5th St. St. Charles Sensational. I almost don't have the words to describe this meat mecca. For $25 order Tucanos
Famous Churrasco and get an infinity of grilled meats. Each table includes a stick with red at one end and green at the other. Green means go, red means stop. As long as you go green the grilled food keeps coming. Anything from turkey wrapped in bacon to prime
rib to grilled pineapple to salmon to chicken hearts, it's amazing the stuff they will bring. Also hit the buffet and grab a salad, some fried bananas and some scrumptious fried cheese. I'd recommend going in a group. It's a lot of fun and you'll be there a while.
