Illinois bicentennial children’s art contest planned
I l l i n o i s c h i l d re n c a n
help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork
will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their
meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high s c hool. Entr ies do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A year-long celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www.Illinois200.com. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, at 212 N. Sixth St.
in Springfield, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president t h ro u g h o l d - f a s h i o n e d scholarship and modern technology. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history, making the library one of the nation’s leading institutions for genealogy and history research. Meanwhile, the museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special e ff e c t s a n d i n n o v a t i v e story-telling techniques to educate visitors. “Only the Brave”
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
Firefighters must be our last real superheroes. They run toward stuff that’s on fire, for heaven’s sake. There are the few public servants — not cops, politicians or doctors — as beloved or who have managed to stay untainted. What they surely don’t need is the old fashioned Hollywood god-making treatment, but that’s exactly what they’ve gotten in the “Only the Brave,” an attempt to honor a group of wildland firefighters that is overwrought when it needs to be honest and quiet. It wants to put capes on men who don’t need them. The film , directed with a sure hand by Joseph Kosinski, centers on the 20-strong Granite Mountain Hotshots and their journey from a local Arizona firefighting team to an elite force at the front lines of the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013, one of the country’s deadliest wildfires. (It’s “based on true events.”) The spine of the story is the relationship between crusty local fire chief Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin, extra crusty) and an ex-junkie recruit hoping to straighten out his life (Miles Teller, very good). There’s some gentle hazing for the newcomer from veterans sporting a frightening amount of mustaches, plenty of heavy metal on the soundtrack (Metallica, AC/DC) and spectacular scenes of nature engulfed in flames. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic content, some sexual references, language and drug material.” RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Lady Bird”
Lady Bird is obsessed with place. Her place in the world, in her Catholic high school, in her school play, in her own family and in her unglamorous hometown of Sacramento (“the Midwest of California”) and the even more unglamorous part she lives in. She craves sophistication in a way that she can’t quite put into words or actions, beyond a vague desire to go to an East Coast college, but is certain that whatever she has in her middle-class existence in 2002 isn’t it. Part Angela Chase, Lindsay Weir, Jo March and Anne Shirley, she is selfish and self-centered in that very particular way that teenage girls, who can’t yet comprehend that this is a phase that might pass, can be. And she is, quite simply, one of the more achingly realistic teenage characters that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting in a movie. Played by the Irish-American actress Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn,” ‘’Atonement”), Lady Bird and the film bearing her name is the semi-autobiographical creation of actress and writer Greta Gerwig in her solo directing debut. “Lady Bird “ chronicles one year in the life of its titular character, whose real name is Christine McPherson, from the start of her senior year of high school to freshman year of college and all of its beautiful banalities — sex, prom, money, grades, boys, nuns and that gnawing dissatisfaction that has plagued every modern 17-year-old who’d rather die than admit that things might be OK. The film begins with a quote from Joan Didion: “Anybody who talks about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento.” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language, sexual content, brief graphic nudity and teen partying.” RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
“Last Flag Flying”
In this era of rampant sequelizing, has any filmmaker more playfully inverted the standard more-of-the-same monotony than Richard Linklater? His Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” was, if nothing else, a compendium of life’s chapters, filmed — and lived — year after year. His “Before” trilogy reteamed Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, every nine years, for strolling encounters that compressed and marveled at the passage of time. His last film, “Everybody Wants Some!!” was billed as a “spiritual sequel” to Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused” — a college movie to bookend a high school one. But Linklater’s latest, “Last Flag Flying,” is a still more unorthodox kind of sequel. It’s a kind of follow-up to Hal Ashby’s great 1973 film “The Last Detail,” in which two petty officers (Otis Young and a young, blistering Jack Nicholson) who are transporting a naive 18-year-old soldier (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk, Virginia, to the brig in New Hampshire, where he’s been sentenced to serve eight years for attempting to steal $40 from a charity box. The source of the tale is author Darryl Ponicsan’s 2003 novel, which was a direct sequel to his 1970 book. But Linklater ’s film has severed some of those ties, changing the characters names and slightly shifting their background while still maintaining much of the connective tissue to “The Last Detail.” It is, in some sense, another “spiritual sequel.” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout including some sexual references.” RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four. ASSOCIATED PRES RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“A Bad Moms Christmas” is a bad movie By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge There’s a switch that flips in the American culture about two minutes past midnight on Halloween night. Pumpkins haven’t yet begun to rot and forgotten candy still lines the Main Street parade route gutters, but the season is over. And, hark, coming in to rush out the old season is Christmas: carols on the radio, displays in shop windows and online ads, a salivating desire by my Aunt Connie to put up her tree already. And, in the magical way they do, the movies turn the calendar as well. “A Bad Moms Christmas” released to audiences on November 1st and tries very, very hard to capture the same comedy spirit that made its predecessor a great time at the old picture show just last year. But comedy’s a tough gig and you know what they say about lightning striking twice. Moms have it rough. Most dads
proba bl y d o, to o, but that’s not a cogent argument to be having in 2017. A l l g o o d p a re n t s a re o v e r w o r k e d , underappreciated, and long deprived of the nutrition and sound sleep they deserve, especially if the aim is to provide their families with love, encouragement, and the more material wants in the hectic American lifestyle. Have you had children of school age in the recent past? It takes someone to be a master scheduler and champion chauffeur just to survive the average days. And holidays? It’s enough to make some go screaming for the door. In this case, Amy (Mila Kunis), Kiki (Kristen Bell), and Carla (Kathryn Hahn) - our champion queens of learning how not to try to please everyone at once - are collectively giving up on a little bit of the Christmas demands of their time and money. No tree this year? Not a big problem. Refusing to buy gifts for the people only barely relevant to our lives? Amen, sister! Some traditions are important (you
know, like spending times with your loved ones) and some aren’t (Chinese takeout is always delicious, but more so on Christmas Night). These ladies know they’ve got a solid formula. What could go wrong? Sneaking into town at the last moment are our bad moms’ moms. Kiki’s doting mother, Sandy (Cheryl Hines) uses Christmas to surprise her daughter with having purchased the house next door to her. She’s so codependent that the love comes across as psychosis, leading to an excellent cameo by Wanda Sykes as her therapist. Susan Sarandon gamely plays Carla’s own rotten mom, Isis. She’s in town to swindle some cash from the family she barely knows and make things even more awkward between Carla and her sexy Santa stripper boyfriend, Ty (Justin Hartley, of TV’s “This is Us”). Amy is mortified to find the extremely Type-A Ruth (Christine Baranski) on her doorstep with the put-upon Hank (Peter
Gallagher, doing little more than forcing a smile and making agreeable noises) in tow. Nothing less than the utmost decorations, food, gifts, and hostessing will do for the stern matriarch of Ruth’s family. She’s awful and that’s the best part. Curtly rude to Amy, wholly invisible to Amy’s boyfriend (Jay Hernandez), and well intentioned only to assert her own image of perfection, Ruth is the icy role that Baranski specializes in. I would pay to see her dress down those she sees as lacking any day of the week. She thrived in doing so for seven seasons on “The Good Wife” before her character was spun off to her own series last year. So take heart. The rest of the movie is little more than bad language, day drinking, and filthy holiday-themed jokes. “A Bad Moms Christmas” runs 104 minutes and is rated R for crude sexual content and language throughout, and some drug use. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.
“Last Flag Flying” has precedent BY JAKE COYLE Associated Press
In Linklater Land, nothing is ever “rebooted.” The ripples of time are interesting enough, just as they are. But Linklater ’s latest, “Last Flag Flying,” is a still more unorthodox kind of sequel. It’s a kind of follow-up to Hal
Ashby’s great 1973 film “The Last Detail,” in which two petty officers (Otis Young and a young, blistering Jack Nicholson) who are transporting a naive 18-yearold soldier (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk, Virginia, to the brig in New Hampshire, where he’s been sentenced to serve eight years for attempting to steal $40 from a charity box. Ashby’s film was a real-time odyssey, glorious in its fiery expletives (courtesy of screenwriter Robert Towne) and seething in its outrage. As a film, it’s still alive, and Nicholson’s cackle still echoes. “Last Flag Flying” is a journey mapped over the same terrain, but the central trio are now well into middle age and their reason for reunion, three decades later, is more melancholy still. Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell, in a version of Quaid’s character) gathers together his old Vietnam War buddies — Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston, the Nicholson-esque, a n t i - a u t h o r i t a r i a n r a b b l e - ro u s e r o f the bunch) and Rev. Richard Mueller
(Laurence Fishburne, whose character draws partly from Young’s real life) — to bury his son, a Marine killed in Iraq. The source of the tale is author Darryl Ponicsan’s 2003 novel, which was a direct sequel to his 1970 book, the one Ashby and Towne turned into a film. But Linklater’s film has severed some of those ties, changing the characters names and slightly shifting their background while still maintaining much of the connective tissue to “The Last Detail.” It is, in some sense, another “spiritual sequel.” Why distance “Last Flag Flying” from “The Last Detail”? Well, not everyone is so familiar with Ashby’s film, and perhaps more to the point: Filling the shoes of Nicholson is a fool’s game, if ever there was one. But while the film’s gentle, rolling humanism is indeed its own, “The Last Detail” stands like an unspoken island around which the movie flows. The balance of trio is off, too. Cranston, a very gifted performer, is acting like a funny
live-wire while Nicholson simply was one. Carell, who can render innocence as well as anyone, gives a performance that feels hollowed out by its grieving solemnity. Fishburne, never one unsure of his footing, alone feels in the right place. And while “Last Flag Flying” is missing the edge of Towne’s dialogue, it’s a deeply thoughtful film about how so much changes (in one scene the guys buy cell phones, marveling at the invention) while so much stays the same. It might be 30 years later, but time hasn’t altered the injustice for the foot soldiers enlisted to fight ill-conceived wars. When the guys arrive in Washington to see the body of Doc’s son, they soon find themselves disagreeing with a hardline Marine colonel (Yul Vazquez) who disapproves of Doc’s decision to bury his son at home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, instead of at Arlington National Cemetery. The colonel and his tone are, to Sal, exceedingly familiar. There are scenes here that pulsate

Although he took a break in early 2016 to tour the world with his wife Majella, Daniel added “I was really looking forward to going back on the road in America and getting back out there to meet the fans, who I’m so very thankful for, as they are the ones who make

these shows happen. We really enjoyed the short set of dates we performed in October and are already looking forward to next year’s tour”. Daniel burst into superstardom in the USA back in 2002 with his first ever PBS special – The Daniel O’Donnell Show. That began a special relationship between Daniel and PBS and since then, he has recorded a further twelve specials, with ‘Stand Beside Me’ being his thirteenth one
in 2013. Stand beside Me is a concert celebration of Irish, country, gospel, rock, movie and long-time Daniel O’Donnell favorites. The title ‘Stand Beside Me’ is not only a popular song among concert goers, but also reflects Daniel’s belief that fans throughout his more than 10 years on PBS have brought him to where he is today, standing beside him making his career a success and he will be forever grateful to them. The Irish singer made record-breaking chart
history earlier this year by becoming the first recording artist in the history of the UK Artist Album Chart to have charted at least one new album every year since 1988, an unprecedented and unbroken 29 year span, surpassing everyone from Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Irish strongholds U2. Along with this, Daniel makes regular appearances in the Billboard World Music Chart. In total, Daniel has now reached the UK Artist Albums Chart with more
than 35 albums and has now amassed THIRTY Top 30 albums over the course of his career. Over his long and continuingly successful career Daniel has received many accolades including an honorary MBE from Queen Elizabeth, an appearance on Top of the Pops, his life celebrated on This Is Your Life and multiple Entertainer of the Year/Person of the Year Awards in Ireland and the UK to add to his record breaking chart appearances.

The holidays at the lake
For The Edge Pack up the family and create new holiday memories this year by heading to Central Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. The festive season at the “Best Recreational Lake” in the Nation begins in earnest with Thanksgiving, though visitors can get a head start on the holidays as early as Friday, Nov. 17. The weekend of November 17 marks the opening of the Enchanted Village of Lights in Laurie, the Lake of the Ozark’s largest drive-through light park. The Village of Lights is spread across 27 acres of the fairgrounds in Laurie and is open from 5
p.m. until 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 10 p.m. on weekends. Admission to the light park is free, though donations are welcome. At the Camden County Museum in Linn Creek, the Holiday Marketplace occurs on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This local history museum is transformed with many booths of different vendors selling handmade Christmas-themed arts and crafts. Lunch is available for a small donation. And, Victoria Station, a local boutique shop in Osage Beach, celebrates its 32nd annual Christmas open house from Friday morning through Sunday evening, inviting visitors to experience the sights, sounds,
smells and tastes of the holiday season. The shop will be dressed up with numerous Christmas trees, lights and garland with the season’s newest merchandise on display and for sale. Holiday snacks and beverages will be served. For Thanksgiving, many resorts and restaurants in the area offer all the comforts of home but without the messy clean-up. These businesses go out of their way to ensure a memorable Thanksgiving holiday with meals for their guests. J. Bruner ’s Restaurant in Osage Beach offers diners a savory menu of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry salad, candied yams and delectable desserts. H. Toad’s Bar &
Grill at Camden on the Lake Resort and Marina and HK’s Restaurant at The Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark, The Inn at Grand Glaize and Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach and The Trophy Room at Old Kinderhook in Camdenton are offering Thanksgiving buffets with multiple entree options and all the trimmings for their guests. Reservations are suggested for all restaurants. And, nearly all of these restaurants also feature ample TVs for watching the big game as well, so visitors can relax, enjoy the food, their family and friends and the comfortable atmosphere. New Mexico: Balloon rides, natural wonders
ALBUQUERQUE, New M e x i c o ( A P ) — Aw a y from bustling Santa Fe and quirky Albuquerque, New Mexico offers stunning natural wonders, wide expanses of desert and mountains, and clear skies that guarantee endless days of sightseeing and outdoor fun. On a recent trip, I got to experience all that, plus delicious food, a rodeo and a hot-air balloon ride. TAMAYA I based myself at the H y a t t R e g e n c y Ta m a y a Resort and Spa, which is part of the Santa Ana Pueblo, a tribal settlement about a half-hour drive
north of Albuquerque and an hour from Santa Fe. It’s a luxury resort with all the amenities, plus regional cuisine and adobe-style architecture. Tamaya is a convenient base for day trips. But you can also find a lot to do right there. The nearby Stables at Tamaya rescues and rehabilitates horses and other animals, even pigs and chickens, and also offers horseback riding excursions several times a day. A weekly rodeo show includes barrel racing and steer tying. For little kids, t h e re ’ s a h o b b y h o r s e race that elicits shrieks of encouragement from the
adults. Carnivores will appreciate the delicate taste of New Mexico’s grassfed beef. I went back three times to Tamaya’s Corn Maiden restaurant because of its rib-eye steak. V O L C A N I C LANDSCAPES Millions of years ago, volcanic eruptions left a landscape of cone-shaped white rocks that look like something out of a scifi epic. This is Tent Rocks National Monument . Chorizo a boost to Brussels sprouts By KATIE WORKMAN Associated Press
Brussels sprouts lovers, you are in for a treat: a side dish that will threaten to steal center stage. Spanish chorizo, a wonderfully spiced smoked pork sausage, gets sauteed just enough to brown a bit and release its oils. Then fresh bread crumbs are sauteed in the same pan and set aside to become a flavorful and delightfully textured topping for sauteed and flash-braised Brussels sprouts, combined with the browned chorizo. This is delicious served hot, warm or even at room temperature — a boon to busy cooks getting a big holiday meal on the table. Try this bread crumb technique with other vegetables as well — it would be great atop roasted broccoli, cauliflower or asparagus. Uncooked Mexican chorizo, while delicious, is not what you want in this recipe. Spanish chorizo is available at wellstocked markets, usually with the salamis and other cured or smoked meats. The casing is edible. PAN-ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH CHORIZO AND TOASTED BREAD CRUMBS Serves 6 Start to finish: 25 minutes 2 ounces Spanish chorizo sausage, diced (about 1/2 cup) 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 2/3 cup coarse fresh breadcrumbs Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 1 teaspoon minced garlic, divided 2 pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved 3 tablespoons chicken broth Heat a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add the chorizo and saute for 2 minutes over medium-high heat, until it starts to brown and release some of its oils. Remove the chorizo with a slotted spoon to a plate. Add 3 tablespoons of the oil to the pan, leaving any oil left from sauteeing the chorizo, and heat over medium heat. Add the breadcrumbs, season with salt and pepper, and toast, stirring frequently, until the breadcrumbs are a light golden brown, about 4 minutes. Add half of the garlic and cook and stir for one more minute, until you can small the garlic. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the toasted crumbs to a paper towel-lined plate. Wipe out the skillet and return to the heat. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil to the pan, and heat over medium high heat. Add the Brussels sprouts and cook, stirring only occasionally, until they begin to become tender and lightly browned in spots, about 6 minutes. Add the remaining half of the garlic and saute for another 30 seconds, until you can smell the garlic. Add the broth, cover the pan, and cook for another 4 minutes until the Brussels sprouts are tender (but not soft!). Uncover the pan, saute for one more minute until most of the liquid is evaporated, stir in the chorizo, then turn it all into a serving dish. Sprinkle the bread crumbs on top and serve hot or warm.
