A conceptual drawing of the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station.
Aquarium plans taking shape New attraction coming to St. Louis Union Station For The Edge Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM), owner of St. Louis Union Station, announced that St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. will build St. Louis’s newest attraction. Construction begins on the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station at the end of November. St. Louis’s PGAV Destinations has designed the new attraction and, once constructed, zoOceanarium Group will be the professional operators of the Aquarium. The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station is the next phase of development at the National Historic Landmark train station in downtown St. Louis. It will be joined by an observation wheel and an outdoor park for entertainment and food and beverage
services. Completion of the aquarium is expected in summer 2019. “We’re very excited to have the nation’s top construction and design firms working with us on this project,” said Bob O’Loughlin, Chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM). “The fact that both McCarthy and PGAV Destinations are based in St. Louis means that they appreciate the value of Union Station’s history and its importance to our community.” “St. Louis Union Station is being recreated for the future. We’ve received a great reception to the first phase of our project remaking the hotel spaces and the Grand Hall and we know the opening of the St. Louis Aquarium and Wheel in 2019 will make Union Station a true destination hotel and entertainment complex,” said
O’Loughlin. “Additionally, partnering with zoOceanarium Group as the operator of the aquarium brings a high level of professionalism to the project that will be appreciated by everyone who visits the new attraction.” The 120,000-square-foot St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be located in the former mall area within St. Louis Union Station and will be entered from the station’s south plaza. The aquarium attraction will feature one-of-a-kind exhibits and tanks with 1,300,000 gallons of water housing thousands of aquatic animals from the rivers and oceans of the world. Not only will the Aquarium serve as a unique leisure and entertainment destination for St. Louis, the construction of this project will create 500 jobs and once operational, it will bring more than 100 permanent jobs to
the downtown area. “We want to thank LHM for their investment in our community. Everyone at McCarthy and staff who will work on the project are all very excited,” said Ryan Freeman, Vice President of Operations at McCarthy. “The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station is an important and challenging project for the region. Building this aquarium, which is extremely complex construction, inside of the historic train shed is unique in its array of complexities. Having been headquartered here for the past 100 years, we’ve been able to build some of the most challenging projects around the region and we’re pleased to be a part of adding this exciting new landmark,” said Freeman. The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be part of a $160 million family entertainment complex planned for St. Louis Union Station. Other components will include the previously announced St Louis Wheel. Wheel passengers will take three to four rotations high over the St. Louis skyline during the 10-to-12-minute ride. Located on the south side of the historic train shed. The St. Louis Wheel will be a new iconic attraction on the St. Louis skyline and will be operational every day of th e year, accommodating an estimated 500,000 visitors annually. Other phases of the entertainment complex at St. Louis Union Station are underway in an area beneath the historic train shed. The first phase of development - the Fire & Light Show at the Lake - opened in November 2016. The show emanates from nine fire pods submerged in the watery pool. Tube lights, hung from trees around the Lake create a display synchronized to music on view every hour on the hour, 5pm 9pm each evening. A new boardwalk was recently added around the train shed lake allowing guests to stroll completely around the water and connect to both the Hard Rock Café and Landry’s restaurants. The Park and Fire & Light Show have been designed by Groundswell Design of Philadelphia. Enhancements also are continuing at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel which is adding 28 new hotel rooms beneath the clock tower section on the Market Street side of the building’s northeast corner. Construction on the rooms began in September 2017 with completion by January 2018. The hotel currently offers 539 rooms and will increase to 567 rooms when the $6 million project is completed. The hotel also just completed 24,000 square feet of new meeting space by expanding the Midway east to 18th S t re e t w h i c h i n c l u d e s s e v e n n e w breakout rooms. In addition, event space with the aquarium’s tanks as a backdrop will be created. The cost of the new meeting space is $4.5 million. St Louis Union Station Hotel now houses a total of 120,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, which is the largest hotel event space in St. Louis.

People planner Illinois bicentennial children’s art contest planned Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from k i n d e rg a r t e n t h ro u g h h i g h school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything
they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot
feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will
be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A yearlong celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www.Illinois200.com. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, at 212 N. Sixth St. in Springfield, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through oldfashioned scholarship and modern technology.
The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history, making the library one of the nation’s leading institutions for genealogy and history research. Meanwhile, the museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative story-telling techniques to educate visitors. Steve Horrell/The Edge
Peter and Tracy Flucke during their stop in Edwardsville in 2016.
Route 66 cyclists pen travel memoir By STEVE HORRELL For The Edge It was clear and cool on the morning of June 6, 2014 as Peter and Tracy Flucke prepared to ride their tandem bike up the 18 miles of mountains and hills that rise out of Colville, Wash. Their 72-day trek across American had begun five days earlier near Bellingham, Wash and would end 4,362 miles later in Bar Harbor, Maine. Two years later the Fluckes would pass through Edwardsville on a shorter trip – only 2,603 miles – the length of Historic Route 66. Many of those roads and trails were smooth, in contrast to the long, steep hills they would face in Colville. Peter was up seated up front. A former police officer and law enforcement ranger for the Three Rivers Park District
in Minneapolis, Peter’s job is not only to steer the bike but to keep a sharp eye out for potholes and traffic. Tracy uses a map from the Adventure Cycling Association to navigate the streets and paths along the route. Most days they work seamlessly together on the bike. At WE BIKE, etc., an engineering, education and enforcement consulting firm in Green Bay, Peter is president and Tracy is vice president. The firm aims to promote walking, bicycling and healthy communities. They also worked closely together on “Coast to Coast on a Tandem,” which comes out next month. The narration swings between the two which allows the reader to experience their trip from two unique perspectives. To ready themselves for the hills and small mountains that rise out of Colville, the Fluckes rose early and left their
campground at 7 a.m. to warm up. The 18-mile climb was followed by a 10-mile descent. “The downhill is steep, the road is narrow and twisty,” Tracy wrote in her June 6 journal. “It is a technical descent with two 15 mph hairpin turns. Now remember, I have little control over our speed and just need to lean the way Peter does.” Still, she noticed signs warning of the hairpin turn and realized they were going too fast. They took the first turn at 30 mph. “Peter uses the maneuverability of the bike to negotiate the curve faster than a car can,” she wrote. “He sets us up for the left-hand curve on the far right side of our lane and, dives to the inside as we enter the corner, then drifts to the right side of the lane again. We make it through just fine.” See “BOOK” on Page 11

The world may be set up for travel by car, but a bicycle takes you down roads less traveled, slows things down so the rider can soak in the sights and sounds of a town from the natives’ point of view. “It’s not like being in a car where if you have a full tank of gas and a soda you can basically blow off 500 miles of the U.S.,” Peter says. “You don’t do that on a bike because you’re exposed to the weather, you’re out on local roads, you’re meeting local people, and you need food and a place to stay.” “Coast to Coast on a Tandem” will be available in early November. It can be purchased from their web site – www.webike.org - or from Amazon or most booksellers. “I think for me, the perfect moment on a bike is when we’re riding along and we’re so in synch we literally forget we’re pedaling, that we’re so much in the moment, so much in the flow,” Peter says when asked what he enjoys most about tandem biking. When people ask him to compare individual cycling to tandem cycling, Peter points them to the difference between freestyle dancing and ballroom dancing. You don’t get the same experience of ballroom dancing unless you’re with a partner, and the two of you are in perfect synch. You don’t get those transcendental moments. “Tracy and I can’t dance worth a darn but we can ride a bike as one, and that’s an amazing experience as a partner, as a friend, as a spouse,” he says. “It’s a high that I think most people won’t be able to reach.”
New mental health service coming to SIUE Counseling Services For The Edge Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Counseling Services will begin offering Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) to students during the fall 2017 semester. TAO is an online platform that provides expanded counseling center services and mental health resources to students, both on and off campus. The platform expands access to treatment for students challenged by mild to moderate anxiety, depression and other behavioral health concerns, and will allow the counseling services staff to effectively treat more students. The platform’s tools include secure video-conferencing, educational vid-
eos and exercises, progress assessment, and homework for practicing skills. These additional services augment the effectiveness of treatment and can be accessed from any mobile device. The TAO platform also includes a self-enrolled, self-help feature, which all students can access without a trip to Counseling and Health Services. “The treatment is a hybrid of faceto-face counseling and online modulebased resources,” said Counseling Services Director Courtney R. Boddie. “Our intention of adding it to our service offerings is to create another option, another point of access for students, regardless of location, to interface with helpful clinical tools
and even clinical staff. At this time, we are only rolling out the self-enrolled, self-help feature, but the face-to-face counseling option is soon to come.” According to a study from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH), more than half of students visiting campus clinics across the country report anxiety as a health concern. Nearly one in six college students has been diagnosed or treated for anxiety within the last year, according to another study from the American College Health Association. Implementing online tools and resources is an effective solution to accommodate the increased demand for access to these important services. Counseling and Health Services
is located on the ground level of the Student Success Center, and is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For after-hours, on-campus crisis response, please call the SIUE Police Department at 911 for emergencies and (618) 650‑3324 for non-emergencies. TAO is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns that allows the patient or client to proactively work on behavioral change while a clinician monitors progress on treatment tasks and symptom change over time. The platform can be utilized from any mobile device, allowing greater access to effective and affordable behavioral health treatment. To access TAO, visit thepath.taoconnect.org.

Fill up on cheer, not calories For The Edge Many of us have holiday traditions with friends and family that surround food and alcohol. So, what to do? Moderate consumption of alcohol can be factored into your meal plan if you make the necessary adjustments. But to do that, it helps to know how many calories are in each drink. Andrea A n d e r s o n , R D N , C D E , ( re g i s t e re d dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator) who writes for TOPS Club Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), t h e n o n p ro f i t w e i g h t - l o s s s u p p o r t organization, offers a “best of” guide to help you choose wisely this holiday season. AV O I D : T h e s e l i b a t i o n s a re 3 0 0 calories (or more!) per serving due to the additional carbohydrates and fat from add-ins, so it’s best to probably avoid or modify as desired. • B r a n d y A l e x a n d e r, 4 o z . , 3 3 5 calories—Ice cream and heavy cream are the two offenders that make this cocktail so high in calories for a mere 4-oz. serving. • Eggnog, 8 oz., 345 calories—Adding with 1½ oz. of bourbon will bring you up to 390 calories. Compare the nutrition facts label of light eggnog to determine if the calorie difference is worth it. • H o t B u t t e re d R u m , 7 o z . , 3 0 0 calories—Limit to 2 t. sugar, 1 t. butter and 1 T. ice cream to slash about 100 calories. BETTER CHOICES: Hovering around the 200-calorie mark, these beverages have additional carb and fat calories, but are better options than the ones above. • Whole Milk Hot Chocolate, 8 oz., 225 calories—If you prefer an alcoholic version, using 1 oz. of a coffee-flavored liqueur adds 90 calories. For a better alternative, use reduced-fat or fat-free milk. • Hot Toddy, 4 oz., 170 calories— Made with 1 oz. bourbon, 2 oz. hot
water, ½ T. honey, spices, and a few drops of lemon juice. Cut the honey in half to save 30 calories. • Mulled Wine, 5 oz., 160 calories— Made with ½ T. honey and spices. BEST: Alcohol is the major contributor of calories in this category with minimal calories from carbs and fat. With 125 calories or fewer per serving, choose most of your alcoholic beverages from this list to make an even smaller dent in your meal plan. • Champagne/Sparkling Wine, 5 oz., 95 calories—Sweeter sparkling wines, such as moscato, are 125 calories per 5 oz. serving. • Irish Coffee, 9½ oz., 110 calories— Made with 8 oz. coffee and 1½ oz. whiskey. • Light Beer, 12 oz., 100 calories— Multiple varieties of light beer are available in grocery stores. • Mimosa, 4 oz., 75 calories—Made with 3 oz. champagne or sparkling wine and 1 oz. orange juice. • Sparkling Punch, 5 oz., 85 calories— Enjoy this light, nonalcoholic drink on its own. No need for added ingredients! • Wine, 5 oz., 125 calories—Dessert wines, like port, are 190 calories per 4 oz. serving, bumping you back into the Better category. TOPS Club Inc. QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Last Flag Flying”
In this era of rampant sequelizing, has any filmmaker more playfully inverted the standard more-of-the-same monotony than Richard Linklater? His Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” was, if nothing else, a compendium of life’s chapters, filmed — and lived — year after year. His “Before” trilogy reteamed Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, every nine years, for strolling encounters that compressed and marveled at the passage of time. His last film, “Everybody Wants Some!!” was billed as a “spiritual sequel” to Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused” — a college movie to bookend a high school one. But Linklater’s latest, “Last Flag Flying,” is a still more unorthodox kind of sequel. It’s a kind of follow-up to Hal Ashby’s great 1973 film “The Last Detail,” in which two petty officers (Otis Young and a young, blistering Jack Nicholson) who are transporting a naive 18-year-old soldier (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk, Virginia, to the brig in New Hampshire, where he’s been sentenced to serve eight years for attempting to steal $40 from a charity box. The source of the tale is author Darryl Ponicsan’s 2003 novel, which was a direct sequel to his 1970 book. But Linklater ’s film has severed some of those ties, changing the characters names and slightly shifting their background while still maintaining much of the connective tissue to “The Last Detail.” It is, in some sense, another “spiritual sequel.” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout including some sexual references.” RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four. ASSOCIATED PRES RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“3 Billboards”
Frances McDormand’s face is one of the first things you see in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and it’s impossible not to be struck by its pure decency. Perhaps it’s a result of all the other roles we’ve seen this uniquely fearless actress play, on stage and screen, wrapped into one. But you look at her face and you think: This person has a moral compass. Her side is the right one. We will be safe there. And that’s the way it seems for a while in “Three Billboards ,” until suddenly it isn’t quite so simple. It’s a credit both to writer-director Martin McDonagh and to McDormand’s revelatory performance — her best since her Oscar-winning turn in “Fargo” — that we don’t see this coming nearly soon enough to steel ourselves. McDormand plays Mildred Hayes, a mother who’s suffered unimaginable loss: the rape, murder and incineration of her teen daughter. The film begins seven months later, as Hayes is driving down a littleused road near her home. She stops and stares at three dilapidated billboards. She heads to the town advertising office, and hands over a wad of cash. Soon, those billboards will be painted bright red, and emblazoned with three messages: “Raped While Dying.” ‘’And Still No Arrests?” ‘’How Come, Chief Willoughby?” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for violence, language throughout, and some sexual references.” RUNNING TIME 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRES RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Murder on the Orient Express”
Kenneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express“ is a visual feast, bursting with movie stars, glamour and production value so high, you might just exit the theater experiencing some time-warp whiplash. Certainly no studio would make a straightforward, classical whodunit with a budget the size of a modest superhero pic (and no superheroes to speak of) nowadays, you think. What year is this anyway? But against all odds and logic, here we have, in the waning days of 2017, a perfectly decent adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel with the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench and Branagh himself lighting up the big screen and chewing the decadent scenery like oldfashioned stars. Branagh plays the lead, Hercule Poirot, a dandy Belgian detective with a gloriously over-the-top mustache who can only see the world as it should be. Imperfections, he says, stand out, whether it’s two soft-boiled eggs that are of different sizes or, you know, the kind of incongruities that make it immediately obvious to him who has committed a crime. This is all laid out quite neatly in a lively opening sequence at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem where he theatrically solves a theft in front of a crowd of locals on the verge of rioting. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “for violence and thematic elements.” RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRES RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Movies “Lady Bird” a great slice of life By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press Lady Bird is obsessed with place. Her place in the world, in her Catholic high school, in her school play, in her own family and in her unglamorous hometown of Sacramento (“the Midwest of California”) and the even more unglamorous part she lives in. She craves sophistication in a way that she can’t quite put into words or actions, beyond a vague desire to go to an East Coast college, but is certain that whatever she has in her middle-class existence in 2002 isn’t it. Part Angela Chase, Lindsay Weir, Jo March and Anne Shirley, she is selfish and self-centered in that very particular way that teenage girls, who can’t yet comprehend that this is a phase that might pass, can be. And she is, quite simply, one of the more achingly realistic teenage characters that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting in a movie. Played by the Irish-American actress Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn,” ‘’Atonement”), Lady Bird and the film bearing her name is the semi-autobiographical creation of actress and writer Greta Gerwig in her solo directing debut. “Lady Bird “ chronicles one year in the life of its titular character, whose real name is Christine McPherson, from the start of her senior year of high school to freshman year of college and all of its beautiful banalities — sex, prom, money, grades, boys, nuns and that gnawing dissatisfaction that has plagued every modern 17-year-old who’d rather die than admit that things might be OK. The film begins with a quote from Joan Didion: “Anybody who talks about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento.” It’s the kind of quote Lady Bird would love to think she’s the only one who understands, but the truth is, she has likely not yet discovered that patron saint of California girls. She hasn’t discovered a lot of things — clove cigarettes, Jim Morrison, what “the deuce” is, how to drink liquor, or that her school has an annual musical — and doesn’t yet know how to look out for both herself and others too, whether it’s her nurse mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf), or her best friend, Julie (Beanie Feldstein). All she can see is what she doesn’t have, so she carelessly skips over the tiny

It’s these tiny and painfully honest details that make up Gerwig’s rich and lovingly composed film, which is bursting with wit, humanity, joy and truth. Ronan adds another superb performance to her already stunning resume as this somewhat unlikable yet
empathetic character in flux, who will make you cry, laugh and cringe. But it’s the wonderfully drawn supporting characters who truly bring this world to life and make this film such an undeniable pleasure to live in for a too-brief 93 minutes. Metcalf is operating at the top of her game as Marion, and there are too many delightful side characters to do justice here: Lucas Hedges and Timothee Chalamet as two very different kinds of
high school boyfriends; Lois Smith as a wise and funny nun; Jake McDorman as an impossibly charming teacher; and Stephen McKinley Henderson as a melodramatic drama coach are among the standouts. But it is Feldstein’s performance as Julie is its own kind of sleeper triumph, and one that makes you sit up and take notice of an excellent actress who had up until this point basically only been used as a punchline (see: “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising”).

Movies “Orient Express” an enjoyable ride By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge If you didn’t have the privilege of reading “Murder on the Orient Express” when you were a student, then you have my sympathies. I first got my mitts on it in 1997 when I was a sophomore in Sam Drake’s English class at Edwardsville High School. The elective was “Mystery & Science Fiction” and we also read Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” and “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Arthur Conan Doyle. My exposure to great literature happened early in my life and I am profoundly grateful for that. Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel is a tremendous example of detective fiction that stands the test of time to be enjoyed by every first time reader. I’d love to be able to sit down with the grand dame and have her explain to me how she so well crafted the fantastic twists and ending to one of her finest Hercule Poirot stories. But “Orient Express” is so magical, in fact, that the expression of not
getting a genie back in the bottle applies. Once you understand ‘whodunit’, this great book loses a lot of its future impact. The whole exercise feels farcical and more callous critics would dismiss it as preposterous. A motion picture remake is in theatres now. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the pesky Poirot, a Belgian gentleman renowned the world over for his deductive prowess. What may be even more remarkable about the savant is his long, luxurious mustache. Branagh’s makeup artists don’t skimp on the spectacle of it and I found it drew my eye on more than one occasion as the movie would periodically stall. Fortunately, those times were few and far between because this movie is loaded with entertaining exposition and a cast of famous faces. Setting out from Jerusalem aboard the Calais Coach of The Orient Express, Poirot is a last-minute replacement passenger for his old friend, the playboy Bouc (Tom Bateman). While fussing about the galley
car and coming to meet many of the eclectic group of passengers, Poirot becomes embroiled in the mystery of a murdered businessman (Johnny Depp, doing a preposterous gangster accent) who resides in the cabin next to him. So, now, as the Orient Express sits idle atop a railway bridge, hampered along its journey by an avalanche, Poirot must employ his famous “little grey cells” to examine the clues, interview the pool of suspects, and figure out which of them is a dangerous murder stranded aboard their train. From here, the ensemble takes over. Judi Dench chews the scenery as a grouchy Russian princess. Josh Gad portrays the dead man’s dark secretary. Michelle Pfeiffer is an American widow in anxious, breathy search of a husband. Daisy Ridley and her striking cheekbones play at a child’s English governess. In all, thirteen characters in thirteen disparate, unconnected guises give Poirot a challenging time to figure it all out. Evidence seems inconveniently left behind.
It is always fun to watch a detective decide whether or not a clue is a clue, or a false lead instead. A suspicious garment even winds up in his own luggage (A scarlet kimono? Or a red herring?). Once Poirot picks up the thread of motive, he unravels the story in a way that must be as rewarding for him as it is for the audience. This film is a true drama and I found myself enjoying it because of the great casting and the great narrative at its heart. It’s a close match to the 1974 film version, if you can forgive me for making any comparison to a movie that starred Ingrid Bergman. I think this could be a long-running hit over the upcoming holiday season. There’s even a bumper scene before the closing credits that teases a run at “Death on the Nile”. Leave it to Hollywood these days to turn anything into a franchise production. “Murder on the Orient Express” runs 114 minutes and is rated PG-13 for violence and thematic elements. I give this film two stars out of four.
McDormand shines in “3 Billboards” BY JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press Frances McDormand’s face is one of the first things you see in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and it’s impossible not to be struck by its pure decency. McDormand plays Mildred Hayes, a mother who’s suffered unimaginable loss: the rape, murder and incineration of
her teen daughter. The film begins seven months later, as Hayes is driving down a little-used road near her home. She stops and stares at three dilapidated billboards. She heads to the town advertising office, and hands over a wad of cash. Soon, those billboards will be painted bright red, and emblazoned with three messages: “Raped While Dying.” ‘’And Still No Arrests?” ‘’How Come, Chief Willoughby?” A grieving mother searching for answers from a lazy police force. What could be wrong with that? Our righteous anger intensifies as a self-satisfied priest comes to her home, sips tea in her kitchen, and explains that she’s out of line in going after the chief. Mildred lectures right back at the priest, telling him that he is complicit, as a member of the church, in church sex abuse. And then she tells him to get the #$% out of her kitchen. She’s only getting started. This, it turns out, will be Mildred’s go-to stance: Fight back, and fight harder, no matter how profane or even violent she needs to get.
So much for black and white. “Three Billboards” is a veritable study in gray. Willoughby (an excellent Woody Harrelson) comes to visit Mildred, and he’s a decent and caring guy. The billboards are plain unfair, he tells her — it’s not easy to catch a killer. She suggests they test the DNA of every man in town — heck, in the country. He finally tells her he has terminal cancer. She says she already knew. And she adds: “They won’t be as effective when you croak.” Mildred and the chief, at least, have a grudging respect for each other. The same can’t be said for her relationship with Officer Dixon, a hapless, moronic, racist, dangerously temperamental and buffoonishly violent Mama’s boy, played with complexity and finesse by Sam Rockwell in a constantly surprising performance. (If there’s any justice, Rockwell will have an awards season as busy as McDormand’s is sure to be.) Mildred’s take-no-prisoners quest for justice will bring her into a fiery — and we
do mean fiery — confrontation with Dixon. But there’s no way you’ll be able to foresee the twists and turns their relationship will take. If one were looking for telltale signs that “Three Billboards” was written by a stage playwright, one might mention that the town of Ebbing seems populated by only a few characters — as in a play. In any case, the small cast is extraordinary. It includes Lucas Hedges as Mildred’s pensive son; this thoughtful young actor, who made such an impression in “Manchester By the Sea,” sure knows how to pick his movies. Caleb Landry Jones is a jumble of jitters as the unlucky guy who runs the billboard office, and Zeljko Ivanek does terrific work as a police deputy. Peter Dinklage and Abbie Cornish are both moving, he as the unappreciated suitor in Mildred’s life, she as the wife of the dying police chief. Most of “Three Billboards” takes place in the present, but there is one brief flashback to Mildred’s life before the murder.

Tuning in It was on the 2nd of February 1968 at the worldfamous Marquee Club in Wardour Street that Jethro Tull first performed under that name. The group would go on to become one of the most successful and enduring bands of their era, selling over 60 million albums worldwide and entering the cultural collective consciousness along the way. To celebrate this golden anniversary, Ian Anderson will present 50 years of Jethro Tull at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Friday, June 29 as part of the worldwide touring schedule. Tickets are $195, $145, $95, $70, $55, $35 and are available online at metrotix. com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. The debut album, This Was, was released later that same year. Founder, front man and flautist, Ian Anderson, is rightly credited with introducing the flute to rock as a front line instrument, not to mention the codpiece! Jethro Tull are one of the biggest selling Progressive Rock artists of all time, and the group’s immense and diverse catalogue of work encompasses folk, blues, classical and heavy rock stylings. The anniversary concerts will feature a broad mix of material, some of it focusing on the earlier formative period through to the “heavy hitters” of the Tull catalogue from the albums This Was, Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, Too Old To Rock And Roll: Too Young To Die, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Crest Of A
Knave and even a touch of TAAB2 from 2012. Anderson says: “I am not usually a birthday or anniversary kind of guy but, just for once, I won’t be a party-pooper either! I treasure the memories of the earlier years of Jethro Tull repertoire, associated as it is with the adventures of visiting so many countries for the first time to connect with new fans around the world. And this is a celebration of all the 33 band members who graced our ranks - musicians who brought their talents, skills and styles to bear on the performances live and in the studio. Join me and the current band for a nostalgic evening of varied music, representative of my everchanging songwriting as our careers progressed through the years.” Ian Anderson is accompanied by Tull band musicians David Goodier (bass), John O’Hara (keyboards), Florian Opahle (guitar), Scott Hammond (drums) and surprise virtual guests.

For The Edge Carol Carter’s work, Elements, is on display at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
For The Edge The four elements of life inspired local artist Carol Carter in her vibrant watercolor art now showing at St. Louis Lambert International Airport titled, Elements. The dynamic exhibition features four large, original watercolor paintings mounted side-by-side depicting her artistic interpretation of air, fire, earth and water. The eyecatching work is located in Terminal 2 between gates E10 and E14. “Each aspect of my work is mysterious, seductive, intense, and inviting,” said Carter, who describes her paintings as containing duality: clarity and ambiguity; sanctuary and threat; pleasure and pain. The use of vibrant, saturated-color contributes to the tension between these extremes. An internationally recognized watercolorist, Carter
makes her home in St. Louis, but regularly travels the world to teach and participate in workshops, sharing her skills and talents with other artists. She earned her MFA from Washington University and later received an MAA-NEA Fellowship in Painting and Works on Paper. Carter grew up in Florida, which gave her a strong visual impression of natural elements, particularly water. She has continued to create work based on the duality of nature and human’s place in the environment. Carol was voted Best St. Louis Artist by The Riverfront Times in 2000. Elements is part of the Lambert Art & Culture Program’s temporary exhibition program. The program is supported by the Regional Arts Commission. The Lambert Art & Culture Program is led by the seven-member Airport Art Advisory Committee. Current members are Lisa Cakmak, Associate Curator
of Ancient Art at Saint Louis Art Museum; Ellen Gale, Executive Director Clayton Chamber of Commerce; Shelley Hagan, Wells Fargo Curator Corporate Art; Leslie Markle, Curator of Public Art, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum; Kiku Obata, Founding Principal of Kiku Obata & Co.; Roseann Weiss, Director of Community and Public Arts for the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission; and Carlos Zamora, Creative Director at Express Scripts. The mission of the Lambert Art and Culture Program is to create a visually outstanding impression of St. Louis Lambert International Airport, generate community pride, and ensure that art at STL continues to complement and build upon the airport’s rich visual legacy. The program aims to highlight the St. Louis region’s unique art and culture, while also showcasing national and international works, focusing on both visual and performing arts.

The Fox to present “A Christmas Carol” For The Edge The Fabulous Fox Theatre is delighted to announce that the U.S. National tour of the hit musical “A Christmas Carol”, will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre from Thursday, December 14 to Sunday, December 17. Show times are Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m. There will also be an evening performance on Sunday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m. The production of “A Christmas Carol” being presented at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on December 14 - 17 is a family tradition across the country. Since 1979, the Omaha Community Playhouse’s
professional touring wing, the Nebraska Theatre Caravan, has delighted audiences nationwide with this holiday tour. The script was adapted by Charles Jones, former Executive Director of the Omaha Community Playhouse, for a volunteer cast at the Playhouse in 1976. John Bennett, Musical Director, and Joanne Cady, Choreographer, added traditional Christmas carols into the narrative. Nationally renowned scenic Designer James Othuse created the magical Victorian setting which has reminded countless audiences of an old-fashioned Currier and Ives print. A national booking agent saw the show and suggested a tour. The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, the professional touring wing of the Omaha
C o m m u n i t y P l a y h o u s e , w a s m o re than ready for the task. Twenty-three performers, more than 100 costumes and a magnificent set struck out on that first tour of the Midwest in 1979. That tour was such as success that subsequent years have seen two-to-three companies concurrently touring the country. Each company stays true to the original production that began in Omaha more than 30 years ago. According to the show’s originator, Charles Jones, “I think of this adaptation as a masque. […] True to masque form, the entire production […] unashamedly takes advantage of the excitement of live theatre. The characters are larger than life could ever be.” One of the many reasons for the
success of the Caravan’s production of “A Christmas Carol” is this unique re-telling of the oft-told tale. It is enormously enhanced by James Othuse’s beautiful set, which recreates 1880s London, and gives the entire production the effect of being a Christmas card come to life. Each Christmas carol is chosen to create a specific dramatic effect; although the carols themselves are traditional, the scoring is contemporary and exceptionally beautiful. This is a holiday event you won’t want to miss. Bring the whole family to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Fox Theatre on December 14 – December 17. To purchase tickets, visit MetroTix.com, call 314-534-1111 or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Prices start at $20.

Grand. R o d g e r s & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I | November 28 – December 10, 2017 Tw o w o r l d s c o l l i d e in the Lincoln Center Theater production of this “breathtaking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award® for Best Musical Revival, THE KING AND I is “too beautiful to miss” (New York Magazine). SCHOOL OF ROCK | January 16 – 28, 2018 SCHOOL OF ROCK is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and “an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz!” (Entertainment Weekly). Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher who turns a class
of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bassslapping, mind-blowing rock band. This high-octane smash features 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber, all the original songs from the movie and musical theater’s first-ever kids rock band playing their instruments live on stage. Vanity Fair raves, “fists of all ages shall be pumping!” THE COLOR PURPLE | March 20 – April 1, 2018 THE COLOR PURPLE is the 2016 Tony Award® winner for Best Musical Revival. Hailed as “a direct hit to the heart” (The Hollywood Reporter), this joyous American classic has conquered Broadway in an all-new “ravishingly reconceived production that is a glory to behold” (The New York Times) directed by Tony winner John Doyle. With a soulraising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE gives an exhilarating new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story. This production is a stunning re-imagining of an epic story about a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South. It’s the musical sensation that New York Magazine calls “one of the greatest revivals ever.” Experience the exhilarating power of this Tony-winning triumph! Series Specials Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA returns for a limited engagement May 9-20. Back by popular demand, THE BOOK OF MORMON will close out the season May 29 - June 3. “A Christmas Carol” makes its 27th holiday appearance December 14-17. The enchanting Rodgers + Hammerstein’s
CINDERELLA plays December 27-31. A new production of the beloved classic Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE
SOUND OF MUSIC runs February 2-4. The family favorite THE WIZARD OF OZ, will delight St. Louis’ audiences February 23-25.
CHICAGO, the razzle dazzle tale of sin and celebrity, will make its way to the Fabulous Fox March 2-4.

Dining Delights Make it a healthy holiday season
For The Edge The holidays are here! We love to celebrate, but it can be a challenge to balance party foods with smart food choices. Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle this time of year may require some planning, but it is possible. Keep healthy eating and physical activity part of your holiday season with these easy tips. Before You Go It’s important to keep healthy eating habits during the holiday months. Don’t skip meals to save to save calories. Skipping meals may increase hunger and cause overeating. Before you leave home for the party, have a small snack. Try a cup of plain Greek yogurt drizzled with honey, cheese cubes paired with whole grain crackers, or a glass of milk and a small banana. “Dairy foods, including milk, yogurt and cheese provide a good source of high quality protein,” says Erin Rich, Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Educator with the St. Louis District Dairy Council. The 8 grams of protein in a serving of dairy is a perfect way to take the edge off of hunger and help control appetite. Volunteer to bring a healthy dish to the party and guarantee there’s something healthy to eat. Assemble platters of brightlycolored fresh fruits or vegetables and serve with yogurt-based dips. According to Rich, “Yogurt provides a powerful package of nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium and protein.” For an easy dip, combine plain yogurt with ranch dressing mix, and serve with raw vegetables. A cheese platter with fruit and nuts is another healthy option that offers protein and fiber. Review recipes you plan to use for the holidays and make some changes. Often holiday recipes have large amounts of fat and sugar that can be reduced. Try decreasing the sugar by one fourth

Substitute ¾ cup of Greek yogurt for one cup of oil. “Using yogurt in place of other ingredients adds protein, as well as a tangy flavor,” notes Rich. Greek yogurt is versatile when it comes to snacking, cooking and baking. Focus on eating the foods you really love and skip those that you don’t. Pass over the foods that are offered throughout the year and enjoy the special foods that are only on-hand during the holidays. Make sure to practice moderation as you enjoy tasty treats. One or two cookies or a small slice of pie may be enough to satisfy the taste for sweets. Balance high calorie meals with lower calorie meals
over several days. Stay active over the holiday season and aim for 30 minutes of exercise each day. Follow these tips, and you’ll be on your way to a healthy holiday season. For more information on the benefits of dairy foods, visit stldairycouncil.org, call St. Louis District Dairy Council at 314-835-9668, or email erich@ stldairycouncil.org. Yogurt Cranberry Bread Yield: 1 loaf (12 slices) Ingredients: 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 cup salted butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 cup Greek yogurt 2 eggs 1/3 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons grated orange peel 1 ½ cups fresh cranberries chopped Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. In a stand mixer or with a handheld electric mixer, beat the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in yogurt, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Stir in the orange peel and cranberries, and then stir in the dry ingredients until incorporated, taking care not to over beat the batter.
