Warming wraps infused with essential oils can provide relief to those suffering from sore shoulder and neck muscles.

Essential oils relieve holiday stress By MELINDA MYERS For The Edge Ease into the hectic holiday season with the help of aromatherapy. The fragrances of plant-derived essential oils have long been used to improve the health of our mind, body and spirit. Boost your energy and increase your focus as you work to balance work, family and holiday fun. Peppermint has long been prized for this and so much more. You’ll find it also helps relieve headaches and indigestion. Freshen your home with the scent of grapefruit. It’s the perfect solution when unexpected guests drop by for a visit. You may also find the grapefruit aroma, along with your company, help

to lighten your mood. Use eucalyptus essential oil in the fight against colds and flu this winter. Just place a few drops into a diffuser on your desk at work, in your bedroom or family room. The diffusers come in a wide array of shapes and sizes. Some use heat, ultrasonic vibrations, fans or wood wicks to disperse the fragrance throughout the room. Others, like the Eden Aroma Diffuser, allow the fragrance to seep through the porous portion of the diffuser pot and into the room. Or use a eucalyptus eye mask to help relieve sinus pressure and sooth tired eyes. Just gently heat or cool the mask, cover your eyes and relax into a bit of relief. End your day with relaxing lavender. It

helps reduce anxiety, relieves headaches and improves sleep. Turn up the heat and fragrance with the Ultimate Lavender Wrap (gardeners.com). Simply pop the flax, rice and lavender infused insert into the microwave. Place it back into the cloth cover and drape it over your neck and shoulders. This can provide relief for those suffering from tense or aching muscles and winter chills. Encourage a good night’s sleep by tucking a lavender-filled sachet under your pillow. Or set a bundle of dried lavender stems in the bathroom, bedroom or anywhere you want to enjoy the fragrance of a summer garden and a bit of relaxation. When you incorporate some aromatherapy into your routine you’ll find yourself smiling and more relaxed. The

boost in energy and reduced stress will help you navigate the many gatherings, rich food and busy schedules ahead. And consider giving the gift of aromatherapy to someone you love, so they too can enjoy improved harmony and health into the New Year. A crew works on the interior of Solciers Memorial Military Museum in St. Louis.

Soldiers Memorial gets makeover For The Edge T h e re v i t a l i z e d S o l d i e r s Memorial Military Museum is one year away from reopening in the heart of downtown St. Louis. On Nov. 3, 2018, Soldiers Memorial will open as a state-ofthe-art museum facility that honors military service, veterans and their families under the operational leadership of the Missouri Historical Society. The Missouri

Historical Society also operates the nationally renowned Missouri History Museum in Forest Park and the Library & Research Center at 225 S. Skinker Blvd. The Missouri Historical Society took the helm of Soldiers Memorial in November 2015 and began a $30 million renovation in 2016. The cost of the renovation is being covered entirely by anonymous donors to the Missouri Historical Society.

With the help of Mackey Mitchell Architects, every effort is being made to maintain the architectural and historic integrity of this beautiful art deco building, while also bringing it up to contemporary museum standards. That includes meeting the rigorous standards for both LEED Certification and ADA Compliance, which the 1938-structure did not meet before. LEED Certification

T h ro u g h o u t t h e S o l d i e r s Memorial revitalization process the Missouri Historical Society has been working to achieve LEED certification for energy and resource-efficient buildings. This is an especially difficult feat to achieve with the renovation of a historic building. The project is projected to receive Bronze level certification, but project managers are still striving for Silver.

In order to meet the LEED certification requirements, the construction team is using environmentally friendly construction materials such as cork flooring, and relamping the original light fixtures with LED lights. They are reusing materials where possible, including the granite steps, marble walls and the original bathroom “vitrolite panels. Continued on Page 7

Memorial Continued on Page 6 Wa s t e i s b e i n g re c y c l e d wherever possible. Also, an electric vehicle charging station is being installed on the north side of the building. ADA Compliance T h e re v i t a l i z e d S o l d i e r s Memorial will meet ADA compliance for the first time in the building’s history. The construction of a new ramp at the intersection of Chestnut and 13th began in September that will allow an accessible entrance to all visitors at the front door. Power assist automatic openers have been designed for the two entrances off of the loggia as well as for the entries into the main exhibition galleries. A ramped sidewalk on the east side of the Court of Honor provides an accessible pathway. Inside a new elevator has been installed in the east wing to ensure all three levels of the building are accessible to visitors and staff. A new lift is being installed on the second level, which will allow individuals attending programs in the Assembly Hall to access other spaces on the upper level for the first time without being required to use stairs. The original restrooms on the upper level and the new restrooms on the lower level have been designed according to accessible standards. Family assist restrooms have been created on both the lower level and the upper level. Even the new exhibitions will be designed with accessibility in mind, featuring closed captioning on video elements, higher level of contrast on labels for visitors with low vision, and gallery space that is wheelchair accessible. Renovation of a City Landmark The entire Soldiers Memorial building is receiving a facelift. The unique metal work on the Museum’s windows and doorways has been cleaned and preserved. The decorative plasterwork on the ceilings has

For The Edge

The exterior of Soldiers Memorial in downtown St. Louis. been restored. Where possible, the original art deco light fixtures have been cleaned and rewired to return to use. The stunning mahogany-lined elevator, with its art deco metal doors, has been brought up to code. The several hundred missing tiles from the gorgeous Gold Star Mothers mosaic on the ceiling of the loggia have been thoughtfully matched and replaced. Interior storm windows are being added to aid in the climate control needed for the safety of the artifacts while allowing the original windows to remain in place. The lower level of the museum, which had previously not be open for public use, has been gutted and renovated to more than double the amount of exhibition space for the Museum. New restrooms have been roughed in on this level as well. The renovations include the addition of a museum-quality HVAC system, a first for the building, as well as new electrical wiring, a fire suppression system and a stateof-the-art security

system. The exterior of the building has been cleaned. The beautiful Walker Hancock sculptures have been carefully cleaned to remove years of coal dust and embedded dirt from the surface. A New Life for The Court of Honor The Court of Honor was created as the City’s World War II memorial in 1948 and resides across Chestnut from Soldiers Memorial. It is being revitalized with a Five Branches Fountain, which has been constructed, and a reflecting pool, which has also been constructed and will be tested soon. Exposed aggregate pavement has been installed and the stone planter on the east side of the Court of Honor has been rebuilt using the original stone. Monuments to those who lost their lives in Korea and Vietnam will be moved to their own spaces along the walkway between the Museum and the Court of Honor. New memorials to St. Louisans who lost their lives in more recent conflicts will be also be added to

that space. C h e s t n u t S t re e t i s b e i n g narrowed to a single vehicular lane and a protected bike lane on this block to better integrate Soldiers Memorial with the Court of Honor. There will be a grassy area that can be used for quiet reflection of visitors or a programming space for the Museum. It will be outfitted with lighting and a sound system. ABOUT SOLDIERS MEMORIAL MILITARY MUSEUM The City of St. Louis created a Memorial Plaza Commission in 1925 to oversee the creation of the Memorial Plaza and Soldiers Memorial. Designed as a memorial to the St. Louis citizens who gave their lives in World War I, the Memorial became Project No. 5098 of the Federal E m e rg e n c y A d m i n i s t r a t i o n of Public Works. The St. Louis a rc h i t e c t u r a l f i r m M a u r a n , Russell & Crowell designed the classical Memorial with an art deco fair. St. Louis born sculptor Walker Hancock created four monumental sculpture

groupings entitled Loyalty, Vision, Courage, and Sacrifice to flank the entrances. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the site on October, 14, 1936 and the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum opened to the public on Memorial Day, May 30, 1938. The Soldiers Memorial Military Museum is owned by the City of St. Louis and is under the authority of the Board of Public Service of the City of Saint Louis. Today, Soldiers Memorial honors all veterans and active military from St. Louis. The Missouri Historical Society, which operates the Missouri History Museum and the Library and Research Center, has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri Historical Society serves as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues. Due to its innovative approach to public service, the Missouri History Museum was the first recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Award for Museum Services in 1994. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traveling exhibitions; tours; theatrical a n d m u s i c a l p re s e n t a t i o n s ; programs for school classes and youth groups; family festivals; special events; workshops; and lectures. The Missouri Historical Society also operates the Missouri History Museum Library and Research Center, a non-lending historical research library. The Missouri History Museum is funded by the St. Louis City and County taxpayers through the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District and by private donations. The Museum is open seven days a week. The Library and Research Center is open Tuesdays through Sundays. General admission to both facilities is always free.

Landing building gets makeover For The Edge With construction of the Gateway Arch grounds nearing completion, a 125-year-old building on the adjacent Laclede’s Landing is currently undergoing its own dramatic $3 million renovation. Taking its name from its prime location at 612 N. 2nd Street, the six-level, 50,000-squarefoot building is undergoing a total makeover inside and out to create a unique dining and special event venue that will be highlighted by innovative cuisine, historical features and unmatched views over the newly transformed Arch grounds and The Riverfront. Initially purchased in 2006 by Munsok So, owner of the popular Drunken Fish restaurants in St. Louis and Kansas City, the ground floor of the building previously housed the third Drunken Fish location in the city. As the newly renovated Arch grounds began to take shape across the street, So recalibrated his initial concept for the building and went all-in on renovations to create a one-of-akind venue aimed at meeting the varied needs of local residents and the expanded number of visitors expected on the Arch Grounds in the coming years. “Munsok’s decision to transform the entire building with several unique offerings will make it a destination in itself,” said John Clark, president of the Laclede’s Landing Community Improvement District. “It’s going to be a terrific addition and great complement to the various other offerings already here on The Landing.” Making use of the building’s exceptional location, So began with a gut rehab of the fifth and top floor, transforming it over the past seven months into an event venue called VUE. With its $1 million investment, VUE is a stunning event space with new floor to ceiling windows

For the Edge

612 N. 2nd Street on Laclede’s Landing has undergone a major makeover. overlooking the renovated Arch Grounds, the Mississippi River and the historic Eads Bridge, with additional views of the St. Louis skyline. Featuring original brick walls and contemporary finishes and fixtures, the 8,000-square-foot space will feature a brand new commercial kitchen serving up creative menu options; seating for 325 guests, and all new restrooms. Bringing the ultimate modern meets history vibe, VUE will

serve as the perfect backdrop for weddings, corporate or charitable events and private parties and is expected to open this December. The first floor will host three separate offerings to be rolled out over the next several months, starting with Kimchi Guys. After debuting several of their planned menu items at recent local food festivals and receiving rave reviews, Kimchi Guys will introduce fast-casual Korean food

to the area, including Korean fried chicken, a totally new concept for St. Louis. The Korean fusion restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, serving up dishes such as Korean Tacos, Korean sandwiches, Korean BBQ rice bowls and more, as well as a selection of cocktails. Sharing the first-floor space, Miss Java will become the first official coffee shop on The Landing, providing an early option

for breakfast seven days a week and staying open until 9 p.m. With menu items ranging from Belgian waffles to classic sandwiches and specialty coffees, and plans brewing to debut their own homeroasted coffee, Miss Java will offer St. Louisans working on The Landing and tourists rediscovering The Riverfront a charming option to satisfy their taste buds. The remaining portion of the first floor will be occupied by KOR. A smaller and more intimate event space, KOR will comfortably seat 125 inside as well as offer an outdoor patio area with an additional 10 tables overlooking the river. With food catered by the state-of-the-art kitchen serving VUE, this venue will be ideal for corporate gatherings or any range of private parties, from bridal and baby showers to anniversary gatherings. The project also includes an overhaul of the lower level of the building. Highlighted by expanses of the original exposed brick and historic stone arches, this underground space oozes old world charm and will be transformed into an additional venue for weddings and private parties. It should be completed in first quarter of 2018. While the fourth floor will serve as the corporate office for Drunken Fish, the second and third floors are currently being renovated to serve as office spaces that will be available for rent upon completion in 2018. “I hope that what we are doing here brings value to the community and to the city of St. Louis,” stated So. “I believe that others can see the success of this and bring increased interest back to the Landing. We are extremely excited about what this represents.” To learn more about all the great experiences that can be found on Laclede’s Landing, visit www. lacledeslanding.com.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“Justice League”

They have the unenviable task having to form an identity in the shadows of the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which are usually good and rarely unwatchable, and the continued glow of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which are seeming more and more like transcendent anomalies as we get deeper into this never-ending cycle of super humans crowding our multiplexes. DC got off to a rocky start and then Patty Jenkins went and made a very good “Wonder Woman.” And yet somehow it is no surprise that “Justice League “ tips the balances back in the wrong direction. Although marginally better than “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad,” director Zack Snyder’s latest is still a profound mess of maudlin muscles, incoherent action and jaw-droppingly awful CGI. It is big, loud, awful to look at and oh-so-dumb. With Superman (Henry Cavill) dead, and the world facing yet another devastating threat (yawn) this time at the hands of some ancient creature named Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) and his army of giant alien mosquitoes, which look like Saturday morning Power Rangers villains, Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) go in search of some new recruits: Barry Allen/ The Flash (Ezra Miller), a quippy “kid” who’s excited to join the team; Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) who talks like a surfer bro and looks like a Nordic bodybuilder with ombre locks and fishermen’s knits; And Victor Stone/ Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who is still in the sulky “why me” phase of his superhero career. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of sci-fi violence and action.” RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Wonder”

It’s hard for us cynical souls to walk into a movie advertised with the tagline “Choose kindness” and not shudder in trepidation. What sentimental hooey is this? What new hellish circle of cheese awaits now? And yet Stephen Chbosky’s “Wonder,” despite its Hallmark Card appearance, is far from the “Clockwork Orange”-like exercise in emotional manipulation some might fear. Even the most pessimistic of us may actually find it charming and genuinely affecting. Based on R.J. Palacio’s 2012 YA novel, “Wonder” is about a 10-year-old boy, Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay, with heavy makeup), with mandibulofacial dysostosis or Treacher Collins Syndrome. His parents (Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson) have homeschooled him up until now but believe it’s time for him to enter 5th grade and middle school — a lion’s den if ever there was one, especially for a gentle, socially isolated boy with facial deformities despite 27 healing surgeries. They, along with his older sister Via (an excellent Izabela Vidovic), live (where else?) in brownstone Brooklyn, the epicenter of inspirational tales about precocious pre-teens. Auggie is comfortable around the neighborhood in his astronaut helmet (Halloween is his favorite holiday because of its costume-covered anonymity) but the prospect of school petrifies him. His first experiences aren’t reassuring, either. A legitimate science whiz and self-declared “Star Wars” fan, he’s nicknamed “Barf Hideous.” Later, rumors spread that just touching him will spread the plague. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic elements including bullying, and some mild language.” RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Coco”

At first, Disney-Pixar’s latest, “Coco ,” sounds a lot like the 2014 Fox film “The Book of Life.” Both are animated features steeped in the aesthetics and customs of Day of the Dead: the Mexican tradition of creating elaborate altars, painted skulls and paths of marigolds to welcome the spirits of dead loved ones for a temporary visit to the world of the living. And both films focus on a young boy who follows his musical dreams at the risk of disappointing his family. So it seemed like familiar territory, which made it all the more unexpected to find myself transported into a fabulously colorful, slightly psychedelic and entirely magical world where I was so wrapped up in the story about families connecting across generations that the tears on my cheek took me by surprise. Pixar has always had a knack for tugging at the heartstrings of grown-ups while delighting younger viewers with good-natured characters and eye-popping visuals. Those elements are also at work here, but not since “Up” has an animated film delved so deeply into the web of relationships woven on the way to old age, nor has Pixar ever looked so closely at a specific cultural tradition. The result is a rich experience for any audience: a story of family and culture, death and transcendence, all set to vibrant Latin music — including a new song by Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (“Frozen”) — and awash in the brilliant colors and dazzling designs the imaginative talents at Disney and Pixar are known for. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic elements.” RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

His first experiences aren’t reassuring, either. A legitimate science whiz and self-declared “Star Wars” fan, he’s nicknamed “Barf Hideous.” Later, rumors spread that just touching him will spread the plague. The movies, a superficial medium by nature, often put irregular appearances under a harsh microscope. Seldom do we see stories like Auggie’s given a close-up. But when they have, the results have often been moving and memorable — like David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man” and Peter Bogdanovich’s “Mask.” “Wonder” adds to that lineage but it’s not entirely focused on Auggie’s tribulations. As the film progresses, it begins to abruptly shift perspectives, reconsidering the point of view of various characters in Auggie’s

Associated Press

This image released by Lionsgate shows Julia Roberts, left, and Owen Wilson in a scene from “Wonder.” orbit. After we first experience Auggie’s joys and hardships at school (one, it’s worth noting, is populated by some dream educators, including Mandy Patinkin as a principal and Daveed Diggs as a teacher), we see the encounters from the other side. After Auggie’s first friend (Noah Jupe) betrays him when he thinks Auggie is out of earshot, we get his story. After Via feels overshadowed by her brother, we follow her own struggles in losing a now too-cool

friend. She joins the drama club. And we get the backstory of the school bully (Bryce Gheisar), too, revealing parents from whom he learned his behavior. The result is a clear and straightforward message movie, soaked it empathy. It tenderly evokes both the crushing pain of being shunned and the saving grace of a much-needed friend — for Auggie and for everyone. It’s a sincere and valuable lesson in putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. It’s not that a tear-jerker like “Wonder”

isn’t shot through with sentiment, but it kind of miraculously avoids becoming mawkish. Chbosky, a novelist turned filmmaker, has previously shown his delicate touch depicting the hardships and joys of life’s early passages in the teen tale “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” Late in the film, Via is part of a production of “Our Town,” and there is in Chbosky’s film a touch of Thornton Wilder and a feel for the honest everyday rhythms of life.

“Lady Bird” is effortlessly amazing By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge When I see a movie such as “Lady Bird” that is so effortlessly amazing, it makes me angry that there are so many bad films being made every year. “Lady Bird” is the directorial debut for actress Greta Gerwig, working from her own script. She’s been a fascinating performer in several previous pictures (“Frances Ha”, “20th Century Women”), but the assured work by her own actors in this movie make me wonder what more we can expect from this new, fresh voice. Gerwig’s muse here is Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan, a stunning actor in her own right), a grouchy teen growing up in Northern California during a touchy period post9/11. Lady Bird is not an endearing nickname from friends or family, it’s the one she’s taken as her own mantle. That

one fact really illustrates exactly what we need to know about Lady Bird. She’s a free spirit, out to be her own person no matter what the other people in her sphere might have to say about anything. Lady Bird is angry about a great many things such as the fact that her much older brother (Jordan Rodrigues) and his girlfriend both still live at home. Her dad (playwright Tracy Letts) is an easy-going guy, but one dealing with his own depression and lethargy after being laid off from his work as a computer engineer. She faces down her senior year at a “safe” Catholic high school in Sacramento where it seems like her only friend is the similarly-situated Julie (Beanie Feldstein) who’s going through her own wringer with a busted home life. Even a first boyfriend experience with the closested Danny (Lucas Hedges, so great in last year ’s “Manchester by the Sea”) and a run at the drama club’s Fall musical (“Merrily We Roll Along”) fail to incorporate Lady Bird into the

mainstream success where well-rounded students thrive. It’s Lady Bird’s mother, Marion (Edwardsville native Laurie Metcalfe), with whom our star has the widest divide. Marion works hard, double shifts as a psychiatric nurse almost every day, as the family’s soul breadwinner. She’s stern, but not cantankerous, using logic to get to a so-honest-she’s-cruel place. She loves her daughter and wants only for her to be the best version of herself possible, but that translates into minutiae of their relationship that makes it appear as if she’s unfeeling toward Lady Bird and incapable of telling her why she’s important to her. This all blends together to give us an unmixable pair: an oily daughter who can’t wait to flee for college far away and her watery mom hell bent on keeping her close because that’s the only option she can imagine working for either of them. I caught Gerwig’s interview with Seth Meyers the other night, just a few hours

after I saw this movie. Her pained, self-conscious banter matches with what she was saying about her movie. “Lady Bird” is mostly autobiographical. She uses her art to share what it was like for her to grow up in California’s capital in 2002 and how much the music of this soundtrack influenced her life. Truthfully, “Crash into Me” figures so prominently to the mood and message of the movie that it should probably get third billing. I really liked this show and for so many reasons. Ronan is remarkable, moving backward a touch to play a high school student two years after the romantic immigrant story, “Brooklyn”. Hedges will also be in this week’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and he’s one to watch. Marion might be the career peak for Metcalfe, next to be seen (other than on Oscar night?!) in the 2018 reboot of “Roseanne” on ABC. I love postThanksgiving movie-going. Now is when the best come out to play.

“Coco” is a joyous film for all By SANDY COHEN Associated Press At first, Disney-Pixar’s latest, “Coco ,” sounds a lot like the 2014 Fox film “The Book of Life.” Both are animated features steeped in the aesthetics and customs of Day of the Dead: the Mexican tradition of creating elaborate altars, painted skulls and paths of marigolds to welcome the spirits of dead loved ones for a temporary visit to the world of the living. His great-great-grandfather was a guitarist who left his great-greatgrandmother alone to raise their young

daughter, Coco, and the Riveras forbade all music after that. By the time Miguel comes along, Coco is the elderly matriarch of the family: a kind-faced collection of wrinkles who sits quietly in her room all day. Miguel feels disconnected from his family history and resentful that it would prevent him from being like his idol: Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), Mexico’s most beloved musician. As Miguel’s family prepares for the Dia de Muertos holiday, stacking a colorful altar with food, flowers and family photos, he defiantly takes off in pursuit of music, hoping to compete in a neighborhood showcase that would confirm his talents. But his attempts to procure a guitar accidentally lead him across the golden bridge into the realm of the dead. In this otherworldly place, Miguel uncovers a mystery, connects with a quirky guy named Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), and meets generations

of relatives he’s only known through old photos. He encounters magical alebrijes, fantastical spirit animals that help guide the lost. And he realizes that his musical dream could be more meaningful than he thought — especially for Mama Coco — but he’ll need his family’s support to return to the land of the living. With “Coco” (which is a bit of a misnomer, since it’s really Miguel’s journey), director Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”) and screenwriter/co-director Adrian Molina have crafted a timeless and beautiful tale that’s classically Pixar: playful, inventive and profound. It’s a universal story of love and belonging set in a kaleidoscopic world of brilliant apparitions and lively, welldressed skeletons. The animation is exceptional: Realistic elements, like Mama Coco’s gnarled, arthritic hands, look absolutely lifelike, while the spirit world is populated by buildings and bodies that defy gravity.

We introduced some new musicians and some different instruments when we went back touring earlier this year and I am delighted to say that they have been a great success, fans everywhere have complimented them on their great talent as musicians and have really welcomed them on board”. Although he took a break in early 2016 to tour the world with his wife Majella, Daniel added “I was really looking forward to going back on the road in America and getting back out there to meet the fans, who I’m so very thankful for, as they are the ones who make these shows happen. superstardom in the USA back in 2002 with his first ever PBS special – The Daniel O’Donnell Show. That began a special relationship between Daniel and PBS and since then, he has recorded a further twelve specials, with ‘Stand Beside Me’ being his thirteenth one in 2013. Stand beside Me is a concert celebration of Irish, country, gospel, rock, movie and long-time Daniel O’Donnell favorites. The title ‘Stand Beside Me’ is not only a popular song among concert goers, but

also reflects Daniel’s belief that fans throughout his more than 10 years on PBS have brought him to where he is today, standing beside him making his career a success and he will be forever grateful to them. The Irish singer made re c o rd - b re a k i n g c h a r t history earlier this year by becoming the first recording artist in the history of the UK Artist Album Chart to have charted at least one new album every year since 1988, an unprecedented and unbroken 29 year span, surpassing everyone

from Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Irish strongholds U2. Along with this, Daniel makes regular appearances in the Billboard World Music Chart. In total, Daniel has now reached the UK Artist Albums Chart with more than 35 albums and has now amassed THIRTY Top 30 albums over the course of his career. Over his long and continuingly successful career Daniel has received many accolades including an honorary MBE from Queen Elizabeth.

Tuning in Alabama coming to the Family Arena It’s been 40 years since a trio of young cousins left Fort Payne, Alabama, to spend the summer playing in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, bar called The Bowery. It took Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook six long years of tip jars and word of mouth to earn the major label deal they’d been dreaming of, but then seemingly no time at all to change the face of country music. Alabama is the band that changed everything. They reeled off 21 straight #1 singles, a record that will probably never be equaled in any genre. They brought youthful energy, sex appeal and a rocking edge that broadened country’s audience and opened the door to self-contained bands from then on, and they undertook a journey that led, 73 million albums later, to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The fact that some of the heirs of that legacy-Eli Young Band, Rascal Flatts and Florida Georgia Line--are among the stars paying tribute on “Alabama & Friends” is part of their legacy as surely as the awards and plaudits they’ve earned through the years. And those, of course, have been legion. They include more than 150 major industry nods, including two Grammys, the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian award, Entertainer of the Year awards three times from the CMA and five times from the ACM, as well as the latter ’s Artist

o f t h e D e c a d e a w a rd . They earned 21 Gold ®, Platinum ® and MultiPlatinum ® albums and were named the RIAA’s Country Group of the Century. The show is Saturday, January 20, 2017 at 7:30pm at The Family Arena 2002 Arena Parkway, St. Charles, Mo. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix. com. A scene from Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

The Fox to present “Cinderella” For The Edge Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”, the 2013 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical from the creators of The King & I and The Sound of Music, will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre for a limited engagement from December 27 – 31. Tickets for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” are available now and can be purchased by visiting MetroTix. com, call 314-534-1111 or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Prices start at $35. Prices are subject to change; please refer to FabulousFox.com for current pricing. Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” is part of the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. Show times are Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. With its fresh new take on the beloved tale of a young woman who is transformed from a chambermaid into a princess, this hilarious and romantic Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” combines the story’s classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball along with some surprising twists. More than just a

pretty face with the right shoe size, this “Cinderella” is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn’t let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, but forces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too. Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and original book by Oscar Hammerstein II. Originally directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Josh Rhodes, the tour is directed by Gina Rattan and choreographed by Lee Wilkins. Music adaptation and arrangements are by David Chase and music supervision is by Greg Anthony Rassen. Orchestrations are by Bill Elliott and are adapted from the original Broadway orchestrations by Danny Troob. One of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s most popular titles, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” was written for television -- debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. In 2013, the show made its long-overdue Broadway

debut. Along with “Cinderella”, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s legendary musicals include OKLAHOMA!, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Mr. Beane’s book for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” blends masterfully with the musical’s cherished score with songs including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible,” “Ten Minutes Ago” and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” The creative team includes scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos, costume design by sixtime Tony Award-winner William Ivey Long, lighting design by Tony Award-winner Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Award nominee Nevin Steinberg. The Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” tour is produced by Work Light Productions. “Cinderella” was produced on Broadway by Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman, Stephen Kocis, Edward Walson, Venetian Glass Productions, The Araca Group, Luigi Caiola & Rose Caiola, Roy Furman, Walt Grossman, Peter May/Sanford Robertson, Glass Slipper Productions LLC/Eric Schmidt, Ted Liebowitz/James Spry, Blanket Fort Productions and in association with Center Theatre Group.

Laumeier and Lambert teaming up Sculpture exhibit opens at airport For The Edge Laumeier Sculpture Park, in conjunction with St. Louis Lambert International Airport, announces the opening of a new exhibition in the Lambert Gallery, All Shapes and Sizes: Ernest Trova’s Legacy at Laumeier Sculpture Park, November 15, 2017–May 14, 2018. The exhibition is curated by Dana Turkovic. The Lambert Gallery is located in Terminal 1 baggage claim near the Concourse C exit. All Shapes and Sizes is a careful selection of 35 maquettes and a series of silkscreen prints spanning 15 years, drawn from Laumeier ’s extensive Ernest Trova collection. The local artist’s gift of 40 artworks, with an estimated market value of approximately one million dollars, to St. Louis County in 1976 helped to bring Laumeier Sculpture Park to life. With many of Trova’s large-scale, sculptural works displayed throughout the Park and the region, his legacy continues to thrive in the local arts community. Ernest Tino Trova was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 19, 1927, and died on March 8, 2009. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Trova was among the most widely acknowledged sculptors working in the United States, resulting in invitations to exhibit in three Whitney Museum Biennials, three Venice Biennales, Documenta 4 in Kassel, Germany (1968) and the Guggenheim Museum, among many other national and international

museums. Trova considered his entire artistic output to be “a single work in progress”; his body of work is beautifully illustrated in these small-scale, sculptural maquettes and works on paper that began the formation of Laumeier ’s Permanent Collection. The creative process by which Trova approached his stainless-steel and bronze artworks is in concert with his creative philosophy. This particular collection highlights Trova’s tendency to initiate a formal concept in two dimensions before expanding into the third and the fourth. The maquettes are selected from his Gox, Abstract Variation, Poets and Falling Man series, as well as a series of small, experimental metal works in abstract compositions. “This exhibition presents the first iteration of a collection of largely unseen artworks that represent Trova’s creative process for sculptures that are still on view at Laumeier and throughout the region,” said Dana Turkovic, Laumeier Sculpture Park Curator. “Laumeier is pleased to present these miniature sculptures to the community of tourists that use St. Louis Lambert International Airport as a portal to St. Louis’s many cultural gems, and to introduce our visitors to an important local artist and his influence on public art throughout the city.” St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) became one of the first municipally owned airports in the country in 1928. Lambert currently provides connections to more than 70 nonstop destinations on nine

commercial airline carriers, and operates more than 250 daily departures in addition to cargo and general aviation traffic. More than 14 million passengers travel through STL annually. The Airport Art Advisory Committee is a seven-member panel appointed by the mayor of St. Louis to provide guidance and help select exhibitions for the Lambert Art & Culture Program at STL. The Committee is currently represented by Lisa Cakmak, Associate Curator of Ancient Art, Saint Louis Art Museum; Ellen Gale, Executive Director, Clayton Chamber of Commerce; Shelley Hagen, Director & Curator, Corporate Art Collection & Resources, Wells Fargo Advisors; Leslie Markle, Curator for Public Art, Washington University in St. Louis; Kiku Obata, President & CEO, Kiku Obata & Company; Roseann Weiss, Director of Artist & Community Initiatives, Regional Arts Commission; and Carlos Zamora, Creative Director, Express Scripts. Laumeier Sculpture Park: Engaging the community through art and nature Laumeier Sculpture Park is one of the first and largest dedicated sculpture parks in the country. Laumeier is an internationally recognized, nonprofit arts organization that operates in partnership with St. Louis County Parks. Laumeier presents 60 works of large-scale outdoor sculpture in a 105-acre park located in the heart of St. Louis County. Free and open daily, Laumeier serves 300,000 visitors of all ages each year through sculpture conservation, education programs, temporary exhibitions and public events.

Illinois bicentennial children’s art contest planned Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes. The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential

Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018. Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday. Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ALPLMartcontest. Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning. The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www.Illinois200.com.

1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment.

Mission Taco Joint 908 Lafayette Ave. Soulard If you like quirky and eclectic twists on Mexican fare then this is the place for you. There are great tacos and burritos like the Brah'rito with carne asada and chipotle bacon. It is freakin' huge, too. They also have torta selections on the menu and a cool carne asada fries choice in the appetizers. Good beer selections there also.

Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant The pizza here is amazing. They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies. During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers.

Johnson’s Corner Restaurant 2000 State St. Alton It’s a great neighborhood bar and restaurant. Sit at the bar and have a few drinks with a friendly staff and patrons. As for the food, get your hands on the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich ever and check out the monster onion rings, too. Fish selections get high marks as well.

1818 Chophouse 210 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville This is a great place to grab a steak diinner, that is their signature dish. A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus.

Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill 215 Harvard Dr. Edwardsville Be prepared to wait when you visit this new hot spot in Edwardsville, but it's worth it. Make sure to check out the gator bites, they are fantastic. It's alligator meat fried in a corn meal breading. The catfish fillets are fried in the same corn meal breading and equally as good. There are also gator tacos and don't miss “Crabby Monday's Crab Leg Special.”

Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices.

You won’t go away hungry here, trust me.

Foundry Public House 126 N. Main St. Edwardsville A hip newer spot on the Edwardsville food scene, visit here to get your gourmet burger fix and relax with some friends. Great burgers, including the J-Bird topped with a sunny side up egg. The chicken wings are pretty good, too. Try the sweet heat, they aren't really spicy, more of a sweet chili taste. If you're looking for a unique experience check out the salmon reuben. It will confuse your palate at first, but you won't be disappointed. It's small, so can get a little packed, but has friendly service and a pretty good craft beer menu to pass the time.

get a load of the menu and quickly find out it's not. The food is definitely worth a visit. Steak night is a definite time to go. Get a New York strip steak and potato for $9.99. Check out the peanut butter bacon burger, the asparagus in balsamic sauce and the sweet potato fries drizzled with honey, all are delicious choices.
