More than 50 trees represent traditions from all over the world, including a Native America tree.
MSI’s Christmas Around the World Exhibit open in Chicago through Jan. 7 For The Edge Feel the warmth of family, friends and tradition at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago’s (MSI) 75th anniversary of Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light. Guests are invited to celebrate dozens of holiday customs with trees and displays, including three new additions, decorated to represent cultures from across the
globe. This one-of-a-kind celebration returns to MSI November 16, 2017 and will run through January 7, 2018. Christmas Around the World began in 1942 as a United Nations Day salute to the Allies during World War II. In its first year, a single tree was newly decorated every day for 12 days to represent the countries fighting alongside America during World War II. Today, the exhibit has grown to more than 50 trees and
displays, offering insight into the holiday customs celebrated by families around the world. Now in its 23rd year, Holidays of Light highlights the holidays that honor light or enlightenment with decorated vitrines containing symbolic objects that showcase these celebrations. Holidays of Light focuses on the traditions of the Chinese New Year, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah, Visakha Puja Day, and St.
Lucia Day. Holidays of Light is located among the trees throughout the Museum’s Main Floor. At the center of it all stands the 45-foottall Grand Tree, adorned with more than 30,000 twinkling lights and ornaments. Guests can also enjoy festive holiday music and “snow” falling every half hour on the Museum’s Main Floor. New Trees and Traditions Continued on Page 4

This year, guests will notice three additional trees in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Christmas Around the World—Assyria, Australia, and Nigeria: Assyria: Assyrians come from modern-day Iraq, Iran, Syria and Lebanon. The theme of this tree is brotherhood, and is celebrated with decorations that include photos and ornaments that represent khigga, a folk dance in which people form a line by holding hands.
Australia: Guests will see home-made paperchains, decorations representing native Australian fauna and flora, and sheep. Plus, several ornaments are created by indigenous Australian artists which reflect the multicultural nature of the country. Nigeria: This tree will include traditional Nigerian holiday decorations, including handmade, m u l t i - c o l o re d N i g e r i a n l a c e f a b r i c and garlands created from black-eyed peas and beaded jewelry, highlighting the rich family customs shared by all Nigerian people at Christmastime. These trees join the more than 50 trees and displays in the exhibit, inviting guests to celebrate the rich history surrounding the holiday traditions of cultures from nearly every continent. Festive Performances and Other

A full schedule and times will become available at msichicago.org in November. “I, Tonya”
QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“I, Tonya” is the Tonya Harding film you never knew you wanted: an outrageously entertaining reappraisal of the Olympic figure skater who, in 1994, was involved in a scheme to injure her main rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Resurrecting Harding from the yellowed pages of ‘90s tabloids may seem about as necessary as a production of “Lorena Bobbitt on Ice.” But yesterday’s media spectacle has been very good for today’s movies. It’s no surprise by now that the tabloid caricatures sketched in a sensational news stories don’t always do justice to the truth. The more layered truths behind scandals of the past have made for some great documentaries (particularly last year’s “O.J.: Made in America” and “Hot Coffee,” the illuminating story behind the coffee that was “too hot”) and a number of recent dramatic highlights, like Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming “Molly’s Game,” about the woman callously dubbed the “poker princess” by the tabloids. Craig Gillespie’s movie — an “I, Claudius” for less regal times — isn’t a sober reassessment of Harding. It’s a winking, rollicking dark comedy both empathetic and pugnacious. It reframes Harding’s story as an American tragicomedy with some of the unapologetic, this-is-thereal-America sneer of “GoodFellas.” ‘’I, Tonya” is a peek behind a media circus that can’t help going along for the ride, too. “I, Tonya,” written by Steven Rogers, is introduced as: “Based on irony free, wildly contradictory, totally true interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly.” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “pervasive language, violence, and some sexual content/nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Disaster Artist”
Who is Tommy Wiseau? It’s a question that has long befuddled and endlessly amused fans of “The Room,” the infamously bad 2003 movie Wiseau directed, self-financed and starred in. Where did this billboard-self-promoting, Terminator-sunglasseswearing Frozen Caveman Lawyer knockoff come from? (He has claimed New Orleans but investigation — and his accent — suggest Poland.) How old is he? (No one knows but older than he has said.) And where did he get his apparent wealth? (The movie cost $6 million to make, partly because Wiseau insisted on shooting on both 35mm film and digital.) It’s also a question that James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist,” a comedy about Wiseau and the making of “The Room,” has no interest in answering. That’s because “The Disaster Artist” isn’t really about Tommy Wiseau. It’s about James Franco. A quick recap for the uninitiated. “The Room” ran for two weeks in Los Angeles (Wiseau wanted it to qualify for the Oscars) and was roundly panned as a singularly terrible movie. But it found a “Rocky Horror Picture Show”-sized cult, with sold-out midnight screenings that continue to run. Devotees thrilled to the movie’s cheesy filmmaking, its strange, woeful imitation of Tennessee Williams dialogue (“You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!”), its bizarre narrative incongruities (one character announces having cancer only for it never to be talked of again) and its proliferation of spoons throughout (which fans bring to throw at screenings). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout and some sexuality/nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Wonder Wheel”
The great playwright Eugene O’Neill looms as large over Woody Allen’s latest film as the giant Ferris wheel that dominates the movie’s Coney Island setting. It’s not exactly clear whether “Wonder Wheel “ is an ambitious homage to O’Neill or a blatant theft of his work. Either way, it will be hard going for even the biggest Allen fan. It’s pitch dark, with little of Allen’s signature quirk and plenty of stilted dialogue. “Oh God, spare me the bad drama!” one character wails at the end and you’ll commiserate. O’Neill has always been held in high regard by Allen and he’s evidently borrowed so much from the master that what begins as a period drama set at the Brooklyn seaside just after World War II slowly transforms into O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” complete with a family at each other’s throats, alcoholic numbness and the lady of the house half out of her mind, trying on an old gown. The film directed and written by Allen explores the intersection of four lives — a struggling blue-collar couple played by Jim Belushi and Kate Winslet, and two younger characters, Juno Temple as Belushi’s estranged daughter, and Justin Timberlake as a wannabe playwright and summer lifeguard who becomes a love interest to both women. There’s also a young son who is a firebug — and a cliche. The film feels more like an old play exercise retooled for the big screen. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America “for thematic content including some sexuality, language and smoking.” RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

Movies “I, Tonya” sticks the landing By JAKE COYLE Associated Press “I, Tonya” is the Tonya Harding film you never knew you wanted: an outrageously entertaining reappraisal of the Olympic figure skater who, in 1994, was involved in a scheme to injure her main rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Resurrecting Harding from the yellowed pages of ‘90s tabloids may seem about as necessary as a production of “Lorena Bobbitt on Ice.” But yesterday’s media spectacle has been very good for today’s movies. The approach sometimes spoils the fun of “I, Tonya” but Tatiana S. Riegel’s
Associated Press
This image released by Neon shows Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly, left, and Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding in a scene from “I, Tonya.” editing is kinetic and the performances keep “I, Tonya” hurtling forward. Especially Allison Janney. She plays Harding’s bitter, abusive chain-smoking mother, LaVona, and her performance is a monument of brutal, caustic wit. In the film’s early scenes at their Portland, Oregon, hometown, she puts a 4-year-old Tonya on the ice and smirks as she skates loops around much older and more wellto-do competitors. But she’s downright mean, too. In one scene, she refuses to let Tonya go to the bathroom. When Tonya pees herself, LaVona declares, “Skate wet!”
And that is, on the scale of things, not the worst of the abuse heaped on Harding. Once she finally flees her mother ’s cruelty, she moves in with Gillooly — a leap from the frying pan to the fire if ever there was one. Their romance is sweet at first, but he soon begins hitting her, especially as Harding’s career blossoms. (She was the first U.S. skater to land a triple axel.) “ I , To n y a ” c a s t s i t s i n f a m o u s protagonist, nicknamed “Trashy Tonya,” as a working-class insurgent in a glitzy and prim sport. She’s proudly “poor
and redneck,” jogging with bags of dog food hoisted on her back and performing skating routines set to ZZ Top. Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl,” ‘’Their Finest Hours”) fills his movie with tasteless interiors and period scrunchies, and scores it with a blaring rock ‘n roll soundtrack that plays across Harding’s on-ice triumphs and domestic poundings, alike. Robbie, in her finest performance yet, plays Harding as above all a survivor, smiling through pain and prejudice as she pursues her dream, only to be dragged down by those around her.

Movies Oldman shines in “Darkest Hour” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I came to a frank realization this week that between Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle, Season Two of Netflix’s “The Crown”, screening “Darkest Hour”, and Prince Philip’s half-birthday on Sunday that I’m clearly becoming something of an Anglophile. And aren’t we all? Americans, I tend to see, have a clear fixation on the British Royal Family and the customs of our closest allies. If you need further evidence, I would only have to refer you to a snap of the Duchess of Cambridge in a houndstooth coat to start the swooning. Of all these self-illuminating topics, though, only “Darkest Hour” is under the purview of this column. Fortunately, it’s also one of the better films of the year and features a career pinnacle performance by Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill. There’s no doubt in my mind that Oldman will win the Academy Award this year for turning the aging, curmudgeonly Prime Minister into a man again living and breathing
the spirit of an empire on silver screens around the world. If there was a high point in English national pride, it was the rebuilding days after the second World War in which the great island dug itself out from near ruination and came to pass again as a world power. Churchill was instrumental in the victory over the Nazi Reich and the movie is set during the time in which he’s first elected into office and the civilian flotilla evacuation of northern France that was so beautifully captured in this summer’s Christopher Nolan spectacle, “Dunkirk”. For events that are so well documented, it’s important to see them relived for us here. I am an enthusiastic student of history and I love the cravings that a film like this leaves me with to seek more. Gary Oldman is no stranger to sizable and important roles. He was Sirius Black and Sid Vicious and Lee Harvey Oswald and - lest we ever forget it - Dracula! As Winston Churchill, however, he disappears behind a heavy layer of prosthetic makeup and cigar smoke to embody the diplomat so thoroughly that I at times could not see the
man behind the character. Churchill was bigger than real life. He was the Abraham Lincoln of England, if you will. There’s no shortage of top-hatted memories of the bullish politician. What I so loved about this film was its ability to imbue the tenfoot tall image he projected with enough fear and self-doubt to humanize him. Two women helped him achieve great success: his duty-bound wife, Clementine (Kristin Scott Thomas), and his personal secretary, Elizabeth Layton (plucky Lily James), an anchor point for him in this story. He relied on their loyalty and perspective when two of his greatest enemies presented themselves. Here I refer primarily to the scotch bottle, but also the bitter in-fighting in Parliament where rivals Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) and Viscount Halifax (Stephen Dillane) plot mercilessly to discredit and remove him from his position. The movie is ably directed by Joe Wright (“Atonement”) and features several of the director ’s hallmark traits (like extreme overhead shots) and boasts a fantastic score
by Dario Marianelli. Churchill’s first term as PM was at the height of greatest challenge for his country. He had the ear of the King (Ben Mendelsohn) and other prominent members of the society, like Sir Anthony Eden (Samuel West), but one of the final scenes in this movie is tremendously entertaining and educating. Churchill drops into the Tube and rides the train with dozens of Londoners on their morning errands. He scandalizes the place by even setting foot there, but charms the crowds by asking their actual input in how best to handle Hitler and the future of their great state. I felt not just pride for these people, but pride for the same moments in our own history that were taking place on this side of the Atlantic where Roosevelt was driving groundwork for American culture toward this most prosperous period it too would ever sustain. “Darkest Hour” runs 125 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some thematic material. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.
“Disaster Artist” is Franco’s masterpiece By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Who is Tommy Wiseau? It’s a question that has long befuddled and endlessly amused fans of “The Room,” the infamously bad 2003 movie Wiseau directed, self-financed and starred in. Where did this billboardself-promoting, Terminator-sunglassesw e a r i n g F ro z e n C a v e m a n L a w y e r knockoff come from?
Wiseau’s friend and co-star Greg Sestero later wrote the 2013 book, with author Tom Bissell, titled “The Disaster Artist” about the inept making of the movie — framing the film as a nuttier version of classic Hollywood tales like “Sunset Boulevard.” Franco, himself, reviewed the book, concluding that Wiseau wasn’t just a punchline but was an outlandish version
of every fumbling aspirant to Hollywood. “In so many ways, Tommy c’est moi,” wrote Franco. To be sure, “The Disaster Artist,” which is based on Sestero and Bissell’s book, will appeal most to fans of “The Room.” Much of it plays like a prequel. Our first, immediately recognizable shot of Tommy (Franco with a long, jet-black mane) is in silhouette, as if John Wayne is making his entrance. He and Sestero meet at acting class, start reading lines together and are soon headed to Los Angeles to make it big. I can’t say I ever found “The Room” nearly so funny as others. Wiseau is far from an outlier in having misbegotten, even demented delusions of fame. He’s kind of a tragic figure, an immigrant trying to hide his past while making what he hopes will be an “all-American” movie. And large swaths of “The Disaster Artist” play off the joke of a hapless goon trying to cast himself as James Dean. As a movie about Wiseau, “The Disaster Artist” isn’t very good. He remains a mystery
throughout. Aside from a spot-on, “SNL”ready impression of Wiseau, there’s just not much here besides a loose jumble of recreations and allusions to “The Room.” (For a testament to the art of failure, see Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood.”) Yet as a movie about James Franco, “The Disaster Artist” is a smash hit. Franco populates the film with friends and comedians, from Jason Mantzoukas to Seth Rogen (also a producer). Franco’s brother, Dave, stars alongside him as Sestero, making the homoerotic bromance between the characters an outright lark. It’s not a coincidence that the big-name producer Tommy awkwardly approaches at a restaurant (and performs “Hamlet” to) is played by Judd Apatow, who gave Franco his first break on “Freaks and Geeks” nearly two decades ago. The 39-year-old Franco, who has now directed some 18 movies, has long been drawn to all things meta, and, on that score, “The Disaster Artist” is his piece de resistance.
