WOW Event Center adds new venue

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com ALTON — An old bakery and a former law office make events pop in settings that will surely WOW guests. No two events look the same at either WOW Event Center or WOW On Broadway — the event center, a larger space, is THE wedding venue, at 513 E. Third St., and WOW On Broadway, a smaller venue, is perfect for more intimate affairs, such as showers, retirement parties or New Year’s Eve bashes. Jill Moon | The Edge WOW On Broadway, at 630 E. Broadway, WOW On Broadway’s massive, cherry-color recently opened and both WOW venues are winding wood staircase highlights a foyer literally within walking distance of each other, featuring floor-to-ceiling, built-in shelves filled approximately one-quarter of a mile apart, in with law books, left behind when Talbert and Associates law firm closed. WOW From Page 2 Alton, Illinois. Brides, moms, bachelorettes and party throwers “bring their Pinterest boards to life” against WOW’s backdrop of vintage and barn wood touches. “That’s what we say,” said Barbie Brynildsen, of Godfrey, Illinois, who, along with her husband, Bryan, owns the WOW event destinations. “Both venues can be for your guests, with your vision and ideas.” From cozy family affairs to festive rollicking holiday parties to lavish wedding receptions, any occasion seems to fit with WOW’s aesthetic. The event business organically grew out of the Brynildsens’ upcycled furnishings adventure. The couple opened a home furnishings business more than three years ago, which now is a smaller part of what they do since the newer business took off. “We bought the WOW On Broadway building because we were mainly having weddings and receptions at the main event center building, but we had more and more interest in wanting smaller events,” Barbie said. “When we have a

For The Edge WOW Event Center’s clock contributes to decorations for a shower at the Alton, Illinois venue.

WOW From Page 5 wedding event, it’s an all-day affair, and it’s hard to host two events when there’s a wedding. So, we wanted to accommodate those who want to have smaller events, even if we are hosting a wedding and reception the day someone else wants their event.” Some of those occasions have since included an 80th birthday party, a retirement celebration and various showers, both bridal and baby. “We’re finding people don’t want to have parties in their home due to space, and we do all the clean up afterward,” Barbie noted. “We are doing more and more smaller events and there’s a real need for nicer venues for smaller occasions.” The Brynildsens opened WOW’s second space, WOW On Broadway, this past spring in the former home of Talbert and Associates law firm. The couple purchased the historic building from Jeannine Kelly. WOW Event Center also is in a historic building, formerly the home of Noll’s Bakery, which became Colonial. “We have the same farmhouse tables, Chiavari chairs (in both venues) and the buildings lend themselves so people don’t have to do a lot of decorating,” Barbie said. “A chalkboard adorns the brick wall at WOW On Broadway, so people can display photos or write special messages. We have lanterns to put on tables.” WOW On Broadway even has a pool table,

For The Edge A coffee-and-cocoa bar is ready and waiting for guests to arrive, at an event at WOW On Broadway, which held its first event last May. Customized furniture pieces, such as the wooden bar for coffee and cocoa, are arranged throughout the venue, giving it an ambiance of “home,” with farmhouse tables and repurposed decor.

The same can be said for WOW On Broadway, Gold Chiavari chairs add elegance to a wedding setting at WOW Event Center. The use of a smaller, companion venue, also owned by Chiavari chairs and farmhouse tables are included in the rental fee for both WOW Event Center and WOW On Broadway. WOW From Page 5 that if not rented for use, can be converted into an additional usable farmhouse table. When the Brynildsens purchased the Talbert building last April, Kelly already had the walls torn down to the brick and new hardwood flooring. WOW On Broadway already is booking showers for next fall. The character of the WOW buildings is evident, each featuring exposed brick walls and other special touches, such as a massive, cherry-color winding wood staircase at On Broadway. Finished basements save energy, give more living space (MS) — By finishing your basement, you can gain more living space while reducing the amount of energy loss from downstairs. Basements that are not fully finished typically do not have insulated walls or covered flooring. This can result in heat loss and cause your furnace to work overtime. A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage space. It can provide a lot of extra room for a growing family, such as space for a gym, home theatre, office, guest suite, or a playroom for the kids. To ensure a comfortable and inviting basement, there are a few project components to consider: • Insulation will make sure your space warm and comfortable. For the best results, install a stone wool insulation prod-

uct, a measure that can be done easily with the ROXUL ComfortBoard IS. This product is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, offering you a higher R-value and better acoustics. • Drywall will help define the space and make it feel like a part of your home. If you haven’t tackled drywall before, consider hiring a pro to ensure your walls are seamless. • Flooring should be water sealed and covered with an insulated material. There are many products on the market, but consider laying padding before carpet or in-floor heating before tiles. • Personalize it with finishing touches. Select furniture that can fit down a typically steep staircase and choose items that complement the rest of your home’s décor.

Reap the benefits of well-insulated home

An inviting, clutter-free foyer or entryway can make a strong first impression on prospective home buyers.

Simple staging strategies Staging has long been part of selling a home, and for good reason. When selling a home, it makes sense for sellers to make their homes as appealing as possible, even if a recent study indicates that staging may not compel buyers to offer more money. Researchers at Old Dominion University and Johns Hopkins University found that staging did not have a significant effect on the actual revealed market value of a property. However, homeowners should not interpret that as a reason to skip staging. In fact, the study’s authors note that staging gave buyers more favorable impressions of a property, which might accelerate the selling process. Staging a home need not be difficult. In fact, homeowners can employ several simple and inexpensive staging strategies to entice buyers to make offers on their homes. • Clear out the clutter, especially in bathrooms and closets. A luxurious, hotel-quality bathroom that’s open and airy can impress buyers, as can organized closets that are not jam packed. • Let the sun shine in. A home that’s bright and airy tends to appear more

spacious and livable than one in which the windows and blinds are closed. • Start right inside the front door. A welcoming, clutter-free foyer or primary entryway makes a strong first impression, immediately giving buyers an idea of what it will be like to welcome their own friends and family into a home should they buy it. If there’s room, place a small table and bench just inside the door. • Take care of the yard. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and the first thing buyers will see when they pull up outside your house is the exterior of your home. Landscaping is important, and a well-maintained yard suggests to buyers that owners have taken pride in their homes, and that may extend inside the home. Make sure the grass is freshly cut, shrubs and trees have been trimmed, bald spots in the lawn have been addressed, and exterior living spaces have been cleaned and cleared of clutter. Staging a home sounds complicated. But there are various simple and inexpensive ways to make a home more attractive to prospective buyers.

By Scott McGillivray (MS) Many of us know that insulation plays a key role in keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But did you know the benefits can go well beyond achieving basic R-value requirements? Quality insulation can provide a number of added benefits that contributes to the comfort, safety and efficiency of a home, including: Sound absorbency — Life is loud, but the right choice of insulation can help reduce noise transfer throughout your home. Insulating between floors and interior walls can help create a peaceful sanctuary in areas of your home, even when life is chaotic. A safe indoor environment — Good indoor air quality goes a long way toward ensuring personal comfort. Choosing insulation that is water repellant and resistant to mold, mildew, fungi, bacterial growth and rot can help to prevent common issues behind your walls that may pose serious health and safety concerns and lead to costly repairs. Look to products that will not off-gas or emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Savings — A properly insulated building will be more energy efficient, a benefit that will continue to provide return on investment long after the insulation install is complete. The result is reduced heating and cooling costs, less stress on your furnace and air conditioner (potentially leading to a longer equipment lifespan) and, at the end of day, more money in your pocket. Fire-resistance — Certain insulations, particularly stone wool insulation products such as Roxul Comfortbatt and Safe ‘n’ Sound, can help buy valuable minutes in the event of a fire, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,177˚C. Non-combustible, this insulation exceeds the limits of most other insulating materials, and it won’t produce smoke or encourage the spread of flames. Performance — It’s important to remember that not all insulations are created equal. Some insulations can sag or contract over time, leaving gaps that can let outdoor air in and conditioned air out. Choosing insulation that is dimensionally stable, durable and that offers long-term thermal performance will ensure your home can stand up in even the most challenging conditions. Stone wool products are proven to perform in even the most extreme conditions, making them ideal for use in the United States. Quality counts when it comes to all building materials. Always look for products that will deliver benefits well beyond the status quo. Scott McGillivray is an award-winning TV host, a full-time real estate investor, contractor, author, and educator. ‘Today’ fares better than CBS after loss of male anchors

By David Bauder AP Media Writer NEW YORK — A year after morning news shows at CBS and NBC abruptly lost male anchors Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer in sexual misconduct scandals, the “Today” show has done appreciably better weathering the storm. Momentum at “CBS This Morning,” the most buzzworthy morning show for a handful of years, stopped dead with Rose’s firing. Last week CBS announced the exit of Ryan Kadro, the show’s top executive who had worked there since its 2012 launch, leaving an uncertain future. “Today” is hardly problem-free — remember Megyn Kelly? — but it has the steadiest audience of all three network morning shows. The elevation of Hoda Kotb into Lauer’s role is widely perceived as a winner. Rose lost his job in November 2017 following allegations of improper behavior with women who had worked with him. Lauer’s downfall, also due to reports of inappropriate relationships with women, came less than two weeks later. The NBC show currently averages 4 mil-

lion viewers a morning, a 3 percent drop from 2017 before Lauer’s exit, the Nielsen company said. CBS has lost 10 percent of its audience in the same period, to just under 3.2 million. ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the firstplace broadcast with 4.1 million viewers, lost 5 percent of its audience. The long history of “Today” likely helps it absorb hits. The show launched in 1952 and while it has had missteps — it has never recovered the dominance it enjoyed prior to the ham-fisted departure of Ann Curry a decade ago — “Today” viewers can be confident it will be around tomorrow. “It just has the strongest DNA out of all the morning shows,” said Shelley Ross, who produced rivals at ABC and CBS. For much of the past half-century, CBS has been an after-thought in the mornings, a distant third-place broadcast that changed names, formats and personalities as often as an impatient designer changes paint. That’s what made “CBS This Morning” so encouraging; with a newsy emphasis, it gained a larger share of the audience in the morning and was now competitive in a lucrative marketplace. AP Photo Matt Lauer, former co-host of the “Today” show, left, and Charlie Rose, former co-host of “CBS This Morning.” A year after morning news shows at NBC and CBS abruptly lost male anchors Lauer and Rose in sexual misconduct scandals, the “Today” show has done appreciably better weathering the storm. ed on both “60 Minutes” and his own PBS show, teamed with Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell. In retrospect, Rose seemed more important to the success and chemistry of his show at the time than Lauer did. Rose was replaced by former “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson and, in October, Bianna Golodryga was added as a fourth anchor. Lauer spent two decades as “Today” cohost, and in his heyday with Katie Couric was part of the most successful anchor team in morning show history. But his reputation took a significant hit with the Curry drama and he wasn’t as popular at the end of his run. “There was concern when Matt Lauer left that they would be hurt more than turned out to be the case,” said Garth Tiedje, an analyst and senior vice president at Horizon Media. In fact, Kotb earned the permanent job beside Savannah Guthrie after “Today” did unexpectedly well in the ratings when she was an emergency fill-in. Kotb’s “Q’’ score, a statistical measure of her popularity, is strong among women — who make up the bulk of morning news show audiences — and more than doubles Lauer’s last score among older women, according to Marketing Evaluations, Inc. “Everybody loves Hoda,” Ross said. “She’s a magical part of the equation.” That doesn’t mean everything is sunshine and flowers at “Today,” which has to be concerned about an erosion of younger women

viewers. In the second week of December, its audience among 18-to-49-year-old viewers was down 23 percent compared to the same week in 2017, Nielsen said. It faces questions about its third hour following Kelly’s departure, and the fourth after Kathie Lee Gifford said she was leaving the show. NBC declined to comment. The “Today” show executive producer, Libby Leist, was appointed to her job in January. For all morning shows, the fact that more people wake up with a hand-held computer on their nightstands in addition to a television remote is ultimately a bigger concern than anchors who have lost their jobs. In the days following Kadro’s departure, CBS dealt with damaging news stories suggesting that King was unhappy and considering leaving, and that networks were mulling a top-to-bottom renovation. The network declined comment on the reports or ratings, but said its newsy emphasis remains intact now and for the future. The danger in responding to ratings weakness with big changes is that it could play into a narrative of CBS being less able than its rivals of being able to settle on one type of morning show for the long term. “It’s always hard to fight against the pull of history if it’s a long trajectory,” Tiedje said. “But I also think that shouldn’t cloud the decisions that need to be made for the future.”

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington Loosnag

I know what most of you are thinking. Loosnag? What’s loosnag? You are probably asking that — unless you are Armenian. Well … it wasn’t that long ago, I didn’t know what it was either. But, am I ever glad I discovered it through my friend, Melanie Keeney, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, who is of Armenian descent. In Armenian, loosnag translates to crescent moon, and baking dozens of the luscious cookie, shaped like a crescent moon, is a tradition that Bennington Melanie and some of her Armenian friends and relatives have been doing as a group every holiday season for a quarter of a century! This year, there was a group of five. Some years there are a few more, but hardly ever any less. Making up this year’s assembly line along with Melanie, were Pam Asadorian, Sandy Asadorian, Rose Lesko and Nancy Stahlschmidt. Melanie’s mother, Mary Asadorian, recently passed away, and as the founder of the loosnag group, who also provided the recipe that she was given when she married, she was sorely missed. It was the first year she wasn’t there to lead the charge. But all agreed her spirit, laughter and love were in their hearts through the hours that the delicacy takes to make. In fact, it usually involves a Friday night and a Saturday morning, and at least some members of the group would end up having a slumber party at Mary’s (where they made the cookies for many years), waking up early to start baking again. Determined to keep the cultural tradition alive, this year, Melanie was the host, and everyone lined up in her kitchen for their assigned task. Though they wouldn’t divulge the exact recipe (gotta keep some secrets), they did share the ingredients: The filling is made first, using beaten egg whites, sugar and crushed pecans, rolled into a long cylinder. The dough is made with yeast, flour, egg yolks, baking powder, sugar, milk and melted butter. And though “the recipe is the recipe,” it and the method have evolved a little through the years. Good cooks and bakers tend to tweak recipes as they go — as tech-

The original walnuts, which were easy to come by in Armenia, have been changed to pecans, because they are a little sweeter, less bitter taste than walnuts. The ladies lined up, with one mixing the dough, another rolling it out and cutting it into circles that are then filled and rolled by several in the line. After assembly, the loosnag are placed on baking sheets and passed on to the official “baker.” After all was said and done, the women ended up with some 2,000-plus cookies to be split between them. In turn, they split them with their family members and share with some of their friends. Quite a few showed up on Christmas dessert trays. Some may even make their way to co-workers (not a lot, but a few — it’s just so labor-intensive). And because of the time involved in the preparation, loosnag is made only for Christmas and other very special occasions, like weddings or other out-of-the-ordinary events. No matter what your tradition, the important thing is to have one — or a few. Traditions bring family and friends together; they create memories and bonds, and the time together is priceless. You may pick something that is part of your cultural heritage; it might be making a treat you remember your mother making when you were a child. Or create your own with your children, your parents, your friends, or your neighbor. The simple act of doing it over and over is part of what makes it so special, and soon, everyone will expect it and look forward to it.

Vicki Bennington

Loosnag cookies nology changes and repetition sparks new ideas - and the women in the Armenian cookie group are no different. In the past, after adding the yeast, Mary would then put it on ice, and the group would wait for an hour or so for it to rise. Not that they wasted the time. It just provided additional opportunity to chat and visit. But at some point, they decided there was really no need for it to rise. They warm it up in the microwave because it tends to open up better when it’s warm, and then start kneading it and working with it right away. And don’t worry; they still have plenty of time to visit.

In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas or suggestions.

Elementary school staffers raise money for Make-A-Wish

By Jill Moon, jill.moon@hearst.com ALTON — Vietnam veteran Richard Sparks met a real-life Christmas angel this year. Sparks tried for years to find help for the hearing loss he’s suffered since his U.S. Marine Corps days as an M-60 gunner. Those firing the machine guns had no ear protection. “There were no ear plugs,” Sparks, 64, recalled. “The hearing loss started then.” Now, after 40 years of untreated hearing loss, aural faculty returned to Sparks last week, thanks to Dr. Chelsea Steer, Doctor of Audiology, and Mid America Audiology Group. Sparks recalled visiting at least four facilities where he was told Medicare and Medicaid were obstacles to getting hearing aids. “It’s a different world,” he said. “I can hear traffic, up and down the road. I turned my radio on and I could hear singing over the music. I haven’t heard that in a long time.” Sparks served in the military from 1974 to 1976, two of those years in combat. Once home, he worked on barge lines, where he slept near noisy engine rooms, which exacerbated Sparks’ hearing loss. Later, he worked at a bar and while cleaning up after closing time, two men jumped him, pistol-whipping about the head. “After that, I started to experience more hearing loss,” Sparks said. When he received a Mid America Audiology Group mailer announcing its November informational dinner event at Tony’s Restaurant, Sparks signed up. There he met Steer, one of Mid America Audiology Group’s staff who chats with event guests after dinner. “She’s my Christmas angel,” said Sparks, of East Alton, after his hearing aids fitting at the new office of Mid America Audiology Group, at 3511 College Ave., conveniently located near other specialists that the group’s patients frequent. John Badman | The Edge Steer worked at a Veterans Administration hospital in Temple, Texas, from 2008 until this year. She and her husU.S. Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran Richard Sparks of East Alton gets fitted for a hearing band, Dr. Steven Steer, Doctor of Audiology, who also worked at the VA hospital, moved to Alton in June to work for aid this week by Dr. Chelsea Steer, Au.D., at the Mid America Audiology Group’s new Mid America Audiology Group. At the VA hospital, Chelsea specialized in veterans with traumatic brain injury, from offices at 3511 College Ave. in Alton. which Sparks also suffers. “As soon as I heard his story, it hit me hard, so I wanted to do something for him,” Dr. Steer recalled. Mid America Audiology Group planned to implement a program to help those in need of hearing help and Sparks is the group’s first recipient. “His brother came with him and pleaded, ‘Please, help him,’” Steer said. “It’s not just the person with hearing loss, it’s friends and family who are affected, too.” Sparks recalled family members, including his brother, becoming irritated with him because they didn’t know why Sparks seemed to be inattentive when they talked to him. “I told people to get my attention before talking to me and people get mad,” Sparks explained. “If you don’t get my attention, I didn’t know you were talking to me. I still catch myself looking at lips when people are talking.” Another “miracle” for Sparks includes the birth of his first great grand baby, named Richard Sparks III, after Sparks and his late son, Richard Sparks Jr., who died in 2015. Sparks looked forward to hearing his great grandson coo and cry before he visited him and his granddaughter, Savanna, last week. Sparks made his first appointment with Mid America Audiology Group in November; he was fitted for his Phonak Audeo B90 rechargeable hearing aids this week after comprehensive evaluation. “He doesn’t have to worry about batteries,” Steer said. While programming the hearing aids, Steer implemented Real Ear Verification Measurement, which probes during programming of the device, measuring sound samples in the ear canal, making sure to hit targets based on Sparks’ hearing loss. “A lot of places don’t do this, we insist on doing it. It’s best practices,” Steer said. Mid America Audiology Group also has locations in Glen Carbon, Jerseyville and Granite City. Visit midamericaaudiologygroup.com or call toll free 888-531-6036 for more information. The Mid America Audiology Group practice at 3511 College Ave., in Alton, is made up of the Steers; Tim Fick, Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, who has practiced in the field for 10 years and specializes in the latest technology and assistive devices; Gina Sykes, insurance and billing specialist; and, Julie Lott, front desk coordinator, who manages patient appointments for all four locations and helps with minor hearing aid repairs. Always ‘Believe’

By Riley Newton, riley.newton@thetelegraph.com

WOOD RIVER — Three staff members at Lewis & Clark Elementary School are helping children at their school, and others across the country “Believe” this holiday season. Jill Davis, Amy Donohoo and Katie Lingle, who are all involved with the special education department for kindergarten through second grade, decided to use their annual holiday door-decorating as a chance to do more than just bring holiday cheer. While kicking around ideas for this year’s display, the women decided to reach out to Macy’s CEO Jeffrey Gennette to see if he could make possible the loan of one of Macy’s iconic “Believe” Santa mailboxes. Obama says designer’s energy informed her fashion choices

24 • Thursday, December 27, 2018 • On the Edge of the Weekend

By Nekesa Mumbi Moody AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK — For Michelle Obama, choosing what designer to wear while she was in the White House involved many factors, from diversity to whether they were a nice person.

Obama talked the decisions behind the outfits that made headlines during her time as first lady during a conversation with another fashion trendsetter, Sarah Jessica Parker, who was the moderator for the Wednesday night event for Obama’s “Becoming” book tour. During Obama’s eight years as first lady, she became a powerful influence in fashion; she could wear a dress and

it would sell out hours after she wore it. Obama — who dressed in a gold wrap dress with above-the-knee gold sparkling boots for Wednesday’s event — said she knew as a woman, her clothes would be dissected and mentioned no matter how weighty the topic she was talking about. “I did know that my clothes were making a statement, I knew that was the case,” she said. “So we decided why don’t we use this platform to uplift some young new designers who normally wouldn’t get this kind of attention, because you can change their lives, which is one of the reasons why we chose Jason Wu for my inaugural gown.” She also said Wu didn’t expect it, unlike some big designers who felt as if they should have the honor. “You learn that there are people in this scene who feel entitled to these things because they’ve done it for a while, and I hated that feeling . there are whole lot of people out here who are trying to make it, there are young women and immigrants and black folk.” Obama also said personal energy of a designer mattered. “I didn’t want to wear the clothes of someone who didn’t have a good spirit, and you could hear these things, you could hear how they treated my staff or how they treated their works, so everyone I wore as far as I knew had a good spirit as well,” she said. Parker and Obama spoke for more than an hour before a sold-out audience at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It was the last date on the first leg of her “Becoming: An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama” tour which has sold out at arenas across the country. It is matched in popularity with her “Becoming” book, which has sold more than three million copies since its release last month. During the wide-ranging conversation, Obama only briefly mentioned the Trumps by name but jokingly alluded to the investigations involving the Trump administration. Obama said as the first black president of the United States, former President Barack Obama and his staff felt no mistakes could be made. “Often time, when you’re the first or the only, the bar shifts a lot, right? . The bar gets set, you meet it, exceed it, they move the bar, and were watching that right now — the bar’s just swinging, and swinging,” she said, to the laughter of the audience. “It’s a totally new bar — never seen this bar before, ever,” she added. “But when were in office, our bar was very different — not getting indicted, and telling the truth.” Later in the talk she said: “This is going to reported on — ‘Michelle Obama throwing shade,’” she said to more laughter. “These are just facts!”

Stephen Colbert: Trump spoof book ‘Whose Boat’ wrote itself

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, December 27, 2018 • 25

By Hillel Italie AP National Writer

NEW YORK — For Stephen Colbert and his “Late Show” staff, the best-selling spoof “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” essentially wrote itself. Because all of the words are by President Donald Trump, who is billed as the author “by accident.” The picture book’s title and contents were inspired by Trump’s disjointed response last September to Hurricane Florence, which struck North Carolina and South Carolina, where Colbert grew up. “If you love Trump, you’ll love this book because every word in it is exactly what he said,” Colbert, for whom the president has been prime comic material, said during a recent interview with The Associated Press. “And if you’re anti-Trump you’ll love this book because every word in it is exactly what he said.” “Whose Boat Is This Boat? Comments That Don’t Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane” has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and raised more than $1.25 million for such charities as Foundation for the Carolinas and World Central Kitchen. The contributions come from author proceeds and from the publisher, Simon & Schuster. Books can take years from conception to publication, but “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” was essentially written in 24 hours and within six weeks was already on shelves, physical and virtual. It began after Trump visited New Bern, North Carolina, and was preoccupied with a yacht that had landed in a resident’s backyard. “To see what we’re seeing — this boat. I don’t know what happened, but this boat just came here,” he said. Other comments included “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal” and “Have a good time!” “Late Show” staff writer Emmy Blotnick heard Trump’s remarks and said, “That sounds like a children’s book.” With illustrations by Andro Buneta and John Henry, “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” looks like a bedtime story, albeit one that ends with the message “There is no moral.” Defining it has proved challenging: On The New York Times best-seller charts, it appears under “Advice, How-to & Miscellaneous.” “We should be on the nonfiction list,” Colbert said. “I smell a rat.” According to a Times spokesperson, “The

Simon & Schuster via AP This cover image shows “Whose Boat Is This Boat?: Comments That Don’t Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane,” by The Staff of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and raised more than $1.25 million for hurricane relief. The picture book’s title and contents were inspired by Trump’s disjointed response last September to Hurricane Florence, which struck North Carolina and South Carolina, where Colbert grew up. book was placed on the advice, how-to and miscellaneous list where many books that defy easy categorization have ranked. It’s a great achievement being on this highly competitive list for six weeks, including a week at No. 1, and we wish Stephen were happier about it.” Colbert said the book is for “children of all ages,” one that appeals to kids because it’s “pretty to look at, no nudity, no violence” and one that shows adults how “our president responds” to natural disasters.

The book is billed as “an excellent teaching tool” that lets readers learn “about empathy by process of elimination.” “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” isn’t the first picture story to mock the Trump administration. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo” is a best-selling parody of “Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of a Vice President,” a tribute to the family’s pet bunny written by Mike Pence’s daughter, Charlotte Pence, and illustrated by his wife, Karen

Pence. The vice president is known for his conservative social views; in Oliver’s book, Marlon Bundo has fallen for a fellow male bunny. Charlotte Pence herself bought a copy of the Oliver edition, noting that proceeds went to charity. Colbert senses he may have similar luck with Trump and his family. “What I’m hearing, from the voices inside my head, is that he enjoys it,” Colbert said, mimicking the president’s own fact-checking style. “Everybody is saying he likes it.”

He spent years as a detective with the Tokyo Police Department before returning to L.A., where he has opened his one-person private detective agency. His back story infuses everything he does, influenced daily by straddling two countries and cultures “from two places and no places all at once.” This duality rears again in “Sins As Scarlet” when Iwata’s former mother-inlaw, Charlotte Nichol, asks him to investigate the murder of her transgendered daughter, Meredith. Charlotte has never forgiven Iwata for marrying her daughter, Cleo, and taking her to Japan where she died, nor was she all that accepting when her son, Julian, transitioned to Meredith. But Meredith was still her child, and the police have done little to find the killer. Iwata soon uncovers at least five unsolved murders of transgendered women, many of whom worked as prostitutes and were drug addicts. There also may be other victims because some bodies were “misgendered.” But an even more chilling_and cruel_pattern

emerges as his investigation takes him from L.A.’s skid row to Mexico’s Sonoran Desert. Obregon keeps the unpredictable plot of “Sins As Scarlet” churning with myriad surprises that are grounded in believability. The author has that same approach to describing L.A., exploring its sights, sounds and smells, its “February summers” and “June gloom.” Iwata reflects that L.A. is “a city of new starts, of mixture, of diverse blood” but also “of despair, a city that never tired of rejecting those within it, a city of unclaimed dead.” The author also avoids the obvious with Iwata, who soon emerges as the epitome of the anti-hero. On the surface he seems compassionate, even caring, but Iwata long ago lost his ability to feel. His barren apartment is a metaphor for his empty emotions. Even when he was married and the father of an infant daughter, Iwata was not a good person, given to fits of anger and rage. Iwata’s evolution adds to Obregon’s ingenuity in “Sins As Scarlet.”

Hold up, Beyonce did not release new music By Mesfin Fekadu AP Music Writer There’s no more juice in Beyonce’s lemonade jar: The singer did not release new music though two albums featuring old Beyonce songs hit streaming services Thursday. Under the name Queen Carter, the albums “Have Your Way” and “Back Up, Rewind” appeared on Spotify and Apple Music, featuring demos, previously released songs and unreleased tracks by Beyonce. Hours later, they were removed. The 10-track “Have Your Way” included songs like “After All Is Said and Done,” Beyonce’s duet with Marc Nelson from the

“Austin Powers in Goldmember,” which starred Beyonce. It also featured “Crazy Feelings,” the singer’s collaboration with Missy Elliott from the rapper’s sophomore album, 1999’s “Da Real World”; and “Fever,” a cover of the ‘50’s hit used in an ad for Beyonce’s perfume and for the soundtrack for “The Fighting Temptations,” another film Beyonce appeared in. “Back Up, Rewind,” featured 11 tracks including “Keep Giving Your Love to Me,” Photo by Evan Agostini/Invision/AP, File from the “Bad Boys II” soundtrack, released in 2003, and “What It’s Gonna Be,” a Beyonce “Best Man” soundtrack, released in 1999; bonus track from 2003. “Hollywood,” a song with Jay-Z from his The stand-alone song, “Control,” also 2006 album, “Kingdom Come”; and “Hey Goldmember” from the soundtrack for 2002’s appeared on streaming services.

Representatives for Beyonce, Apple Music and Spotify didn’t immediately return emails seeking comment. Beyonce’s last three albums were released in surprise form: her self-titled album came out in 2013; “Lemonade” followed in 2016; and “Everything is Love,” her collaborative album with Jay-Z where the couple is billed as The Carters, was released earlier this year. R&B singer SZA on Thursday addressed an album of her older demos that recently hit streaming services under the name Sister Solana (her real name is Solana Rowe). SZA called the project “random scratches from 2015” and explained that the songs are “def not new new!”
