Eagle season opens in Alton For The Edge All eyes are on the sky as the Alton region prepares for the annual winter migration of the American Bald Eagle. Every January, experts anticipate as many as 1,000 bald eagles will migrate to the area reclaiming their winter roosts along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. To celebrate the return of this majestic bird, The Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Center along with the Audubon Center at Riverlands will host the AltonAudubon Eagle Festival, Saturday, Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free family-friendly activities, eagle watching shuttle tours and a live American Bald Eagle will be on hand at the Alton Visitors Center, 200 Piasa St. The Audubon Center at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, 301 Riverlands Way, West Alton will feature live regional birds of prey and offer additional activities suitable for the entire family. Start your day of eagle activities in downtown Alton by watching ice carvers create an eagle from a frozen block of ice. Then take part in the always popular ice cube crush giveaway where every participant is a winner when they choose an ice cube to crush. Each ice cube features a special offer from a regional business including: Argosy Casino Alton, My Just Desserts, The Loading Dock Ice Rink, Fin Inn, Elsah General Store, Olive Oil Marketplace, Grafton Fudge, Bowl Haven, Old Bakery Beer Co., Cookie Factory, Grafton Winery & Brewhaus, Be Well Now and Sherry’s Snacks. Or take a chance to win a prize on the ever-popular Plinko game from Argosy Casino. Prizes can include discounts on merchandise and food or free gifts and gift certificates to area

The bank’s mascot, Sam the Eagle, will also be on hand to greet visitors to downtown Alton. And, of course, there will be the star of the show: a live eagle meet and greet featuring an eagle from the World Bird Sanctuary at the Alton Visitors Center. All of these activities are free. Additionally, the CVB will offer Eagle Watching Shuttle Tours which will provide visitors with a guided first-hand look at several eagle watching hot spots in the region. All shuttles leave from the Audubon Center at Riverlands. The shuttles will be provided by Argosy Casino Alton. The cost for these 45-minute tours is $5 per person and reservations may be made in advance at www.visitalton.com/

shuttle. Tours begin at 10:30 a.m. and the last Eagle Watching Shuttle Tour will depart at 1:30 p.m. At the Audubon Center, located across the Mississippi River, visitors can enjoy the view of the mighty river and its abundant wildlife from the comfort of the state-of-theart Visitors Center. Multiple spotting scopes are available for use and everyone will be able to have an up-close and personal look at the area’s Birds of Prey presented by TreeHouse Wildlife Center. Representatives of area attractions and conservation organizations will also be at the center hosting family-friendly activities. Chances are visitors will get to see the hundreds of Trumpeter Swans who make the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary their winter home. All activities at the Audubon Center are free.

The weekend also kicks off the annual Alton Eagle Watcher T-Shirt Giveaway, which is open to eagle watchers of all ages. This giveaway encourages visitors to stop by the various Eagle Watching Hot Spots. Visitors who go to five of the specified hot spots (Pere Marquette State Park, Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, Alton Visitor Center, Audubon Center at Riverlands, National Great Rivers Museum, TreeHouse Wildlife Center, Lewis & Clark State Historic Site, Elsah General Store, Columbia Bottom Conservation Area or the Grafton Visitor Center) and have their card initialed by a representative of that site will receive a free eagle t-shirt by returning their completed card to the Alton Visitors Center. T shirts are available while supplies last. The contest is sponsored in part by Alton Memorial Hospital and Phillips 66. For more information

on this contest go to www. VisitAlton.com/EagleWatcher. Every day visitors can travel along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway to visit the “Eagle Watching Hot Spots” featured in the 2018 Eagle Watcher ’s Guide. Again this year, the Alton Eagle Watching App will guide visitors during their eagle watching adventure. The free app, available for iPhone and Android, will lead visitors to the eagle watching hot spots, provide information on upcoming events and festivals, allow visitors to share their eagle photos, offer deals from restaurants and shops, as well as a list of the shops, restaurants, attractions and lodging found along the byway. Annually, the opportunities for eagle watching continue to grow in the Alton region. Visitors can head out to view the eagles on their own, or they can take part in some of the traditional eagle watching events in the region, including eagle meet & greets, eagle watching tours and live bird demonstrations. Events take place nearly every weekend and throughout the week, from January through March. Plus, most of the events in the region are free of charge. A full list of events can be found online at www.VisitAlton. com/Seasons/Eagle and in the Eagle Watcher’s Guide. For visitors who would like to make eagle watching a winter getaway, there are numerous eagle packages and specials available at hotels and bed & breakfast inns in Alton, Grafton and Elsah. Alton is the place to be for the best eagle events and the largest concentration of American Bald Eagles in the state of Illinois. For the latest eagle watching updates or to receive your free Eagle Watcher’s Guide, call 1-800-ALTON-IL or go to www.VisitAlton.com.

As a part of Northwestern Settlement, it’s important that we celebrate the diversity of voices in our community, and we wanted to raise them up through the power of story.” Adventure Stage’s 2017/18 Season opened with the Chicago premiere Akeelah and the Bee adapted by Cheryl West, directed by Daryl Brooks (ended

November 24). Next up is the world premiere of Roots in the Alley by Lucas Baisch (March 31–May 5, 2018). Northwestern Settlement nurtures, educates and inspires children and families across Chicago. The Settlement’s success results from a commitment to treating every person who enters its doors with dignity and respect, while supporting them with transformational programming designed to disrupt generational poverty. The Settlement has led the way in innovative programming by offering residential science and environmental education for inner-city youth, launching successful charter schools, and adding a theater so children and teens have a forum for expressing their life experiences. Bill Roseberry/The Edge

The swordfish tacos at DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works located at 318 South Towanda Ave. in Normal with a side of dirty rice.

DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works in Normal By BILL ROSEBERRY For The Edge I’ve frequently conveyed my love of craft beer in my food reviews. One of the trends I like most about craft breweries is many of them have taprooms and gastropubs to include food with their brews. That brings me to my latest “You Gotta Eat” stop — DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works. If you’re not familiar with DESTIHL, it is a brilliant craft brewery located in Normal. I’ve long been a fan of their beer, specifically their sour series, but with a recent trip to

Normal I had the opportunity to check out their restaurant. DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works has two locations, one in Normal and another in Champaign. I visited the Normal joint, located at 318 South Towanda Ave. The Normal restaurant opened in November of 2007 and I realized quickly on my visit that it’s pretty popular for the people in town. It’s a pretty big restaurant. You enter and immediately meet the hostess station. There’s an open dining area with booths and tables to its left and then walk around a wall

to the bar area in the back with additional seating. I set up shop at a high top table near the long bar. A pretty cool touch were the large flat screen TVs behind the bar featuring the beers on tap, rotating screens with upcoming events and information on DESTIHL. There was also an outside patio area for patrons on warm days. It’s just a good spot for a night out with a group of friends or for a date night. I started my experience with some liquid libations. Like I said earlier, I’m a big fan of DESTIHL’s wild sour series. Sour beers aren’t for everyone. Continiued on Page 19

Dining Delights Eat Continiued from Page 18 There is a much longer and an unpredictable process during brewing. The f e r m e n t a t i o n p ro c e s s t a k e s much longer and sometimes the beers are aged for years to get that tart or sour taste. They allow wild strains of yeast to enter the process t o p ro d u c e t h a t b i t t e r a n d pungent flavor. In my opinion DESTIHL has perfected this process with their wild sour series. They have used raspberries, blueberries, lemon and cranberries as main ingredients in some of those sours. I chose a newer r e l e a s e i n t h e Wi l d S o u r : Synchopathic Apricot. This beer didn’t disappoint. It was extremely lippuckering fantastic with a sweet apricot taste to go with the strong sour experience. If you like sour and tart candy and enjoy beer, this would be something you should check out. But I couldn’t just stop at a beer, after all this column is all about the food and DESTIHL has some cool options in that department, too. I started with an appetizer and as much as I love craft beer, I love bacon more so I began with a pretty peculiar order. I went with the beerbattered bacon. It was simply bacon breaded in a hefeweizenbattered jalapeno coating and then drizzled with a maple chipotle sauce. The breading was actually a little thick for my taste and I was expecting much more spice to it than I received. It was good but not quite what I was expecting, a little disappointing. I would

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

The beer-battered bacon on the appetizer menu at DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works located in Normal. recommend a chipotle ranch or sweet and sour sauce on the side for the bacon. U n f o r t u n a t e l y t h e re w a s n ’ t much of the maple chipotle sauce drizzled on it. As for my main dish I ordered swordfish tacos. This was my first encounter with swordfish, something I’ve been intrigued to try for sometime. Tw o t a c o s w e re i n c l u d e d with the order, both served on small corn tortillas like traditional street tacos. The fish came with a slaw concoction which included shredded carrots and cabbage

among other ingredients. It also had a giant dollop of guacamole to finish it off. The swordfish was phenomenal. It was thick and meaty, with a sensational charbroil taste. I would compare it to salmon or tuna with its consistency, or even shark if you’ve ever tried that. It’s well worth a try. Unfortunately, the slaw and guacamole overshadowed the swordfish because there was so much of it. I think cutting back on those ingredients would have made this dish more enjoyable.

It was also served with a side of dirty rice, which included corn and black beans. It was a very nice sidekick for the tacos and had a good taste to it. While I wasn’t overwhelmed with my food choices, there are plenty of other menu items that caught my eye and would lead me back to DESTIHL. Some of the other intriguing choices on the monster menu were: chorizo stuffed dates, b e e r- b a t t e re d a s p a r a g u s , a sweet and spicy duck salad, a b e e r- b a t t e re d a n d b a c o n b u rg e r, s p i c y t h a i s h r i m p , stuffed poblano peppers and

an espresso rubbed ribeye. To c h e c k o u t t h e e n t i r e menu at DESTIHL, visit www. destihlbrewpub.com. Like I said, I wasn’t overwhelmed with the food on my visit, but I’ve been told by countless friends how much they’ve enjoyed the food at DESTIHL. I know I can’t deny their greatness as a brewery and with a quirky menu with a plethora of options, I definitely recommend DESTIHL Restaurant and Brew Works as a place to go when you gotta eat.

New prints spice up Lambert For The Edge St. Louis master printmaker Maryanne Ellison Simmons showcases largescale works by three artists in the latest exhibition, Wildwood Press: Mark Making, at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). The prints of Yizhak Elyashiv, Casey Rae and Jerald Ieans are on display in the newly expanded Terminal 2 (E Gates) in the corridor between gates E33 and E34. Wildwood Press was founded by Simmons in 1996 and is dedicated to experimentation and the unexpected. The prints from Wildwood Press strive to redefine what a print can be. Each year a small number of artists are invited to work with Simmons in her St. Louis studio where she serves as both publisher and Master Printer. Wildwood Press: Mark Making will be on display through December 2018. The installation is part of the temporary exhibitions program within the Lambert Art & Culture Program. Temporary exhibitions at STL are supported by the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis. This is the newest of four temporary art exhibition locations in Terminal 2. Another five temporary exhibition areas are located in Terminal 1. To see all the latest Lambert Art & Culture Program exhibitions and permanent art installations, visit artoftravelstl.com. Yizhak Elyashiv is an Israeli-born artist who has collaborated with printmaking studios across the U.S. For his series of three collagraph prints (Untitled, 2001) at the Airport, he constructed a graduated inventory of flower petals along a horizon line, slowly adding ink and ink modifiers, running the plates through the press as the image slowly moves beyond the plate – giving his carefully constructed model back to the whims of nature. Elyashiv’s prints have been exhibited by the Israel Museum, the British Museum, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others. Adjoining those works along the corridor wall are the Giclee prints by St. Louis artist Casey Rae. She’s best known for a series of sweeping images of the

Her Airport works display the quiet isolation of winter detailed in a frozen fountain in Mackinaw City, Michigan. One set of prints, Mackinaw City 4 Huron (2010), showcases the winter worn ice bursting with warm color as the sun briefly lights the statuesque columns of ice. Another set of prints, Mackinaw City 35 Huron (2010), document a return visit the following year where the same cascading fountain reflected a cold blue sky. Casey Rae’s work can be found in the collections of The Saint Louis Art Museum, Suwa Art Museum/Suwa, Japan, Alden B. Dow Museum/Midland MI, Ralston Purina, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Boston Consulting Group, AG Edwards, among many others. The third adjoining print display features the work of St. Louis artist Jerald Ieans, who masterfully melds color, form

and technique to create sensuous, yet precise, organic abstractions that recall his early interest in color-field painting and minimalism. His two prints, 51 Blue and 53 Blue, were born out of a 2003 residency with Wildwood Press, where he created dozens of unique collagraph prints using laser-cut steel plates. Dust settling for “The Last Jedi” NEW YORK (AP) — With glowing reviews from critics and $450.8 million of worldwide box office in the first three days of release of “The Last Jedi,” all would seem to be right in the “Star Wars” universe. But some audience reaction metrics suggest not all Star Wars fans are so thrilled with Rian Johnson’s eighth episode in the franchise. While “The Last Jedi” sports a sterling 93 percent fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, the website’s users give it only a 56 percent score . A similar dichotomy is also found on the movie review aggregation website Metacritic , where the movie has a score of 86 out of 100 from critics but earned a woeful 4.9 out of 10 from users. The role reversal between critics and fans has caused consternation throughout the Star Wars galaxy. Could “The Last Jedi” be a critical smash and a dud with audiences? Is “The Last Jedi” more “Attack of the Clones” than “The Empire Strikes Back”? What in the name of midi-chlorians is going on here? For starters, the responses on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are to be taken with a Death Star-sized grain of salt. They’re supplied by users to the website who can, by creating numerous accounts, vote limitlessly, and need offer no proof of having actually seen the movie. Some believe a nefarious plot is at play, a theory backed up by the boasts of a few on social media . Similar ploys , after all, were used against the female-led “Ghostbusters.” But why would anyone want to sabotage “The Last Jedi”? Well, there have been growing signs of rebellion against the galaxy far, far away. Some conservative moviegoers have taken issue with the current trilogy’s embrace of multiculturalism. Claiming an anti-Donald Trump agenda, some called for a boycott of last year’s spinoff “Rogue One.” Writer Chris Weitz noted the Empire “is a white supremacist (human) organization.” Politics have always played a role in “Star Wars.” George Lucas has said he wrote it as a Nixon-era parable for the Vietnam War, about how democracies turn into dictatorships. But in carrying those themes forward to today, “The Last Jedi” has — like virtually everything else — been fed into America’s combustible politics. Even Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has volleyed with Texas Senator Ted Cruz on Twitter over net neutrality. “Similar to other movie sites, we’re currently experiencing a high volume of fan activity around ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’” said Rotten Tomaotes spokesman Tiyson Reynolds. “We’re closely monitoring all user review activity to make sure it’s valid.” But their low ratings don’t jive with other, more scientific data. Like “The Force Awakens,” ‘’The Last Jedi” won an A CinemaScore, which polls audiences coming out of theaters. CinemaScore counted feedback as 89 percent positive. ComScore’s PostTrak audience survey recorded an average five-out-five star rating from moviegoers, with 80 percent saying they would definitely recommend the film. And then there’s the mammoth box office. With $220 million in domestic ticket sales, “The Last Jedi” now ranks as the second highest grossing opening weekend of all time, after J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens.”

Movies “Ferdinand” jumps to big screen By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press This holiday season, there’s all manner of conflict at your local movie theater — Jedis battling in the stars, Winston Churchill warring in Europe and Olympic athletes dueling on ice. And then there’s that 2,000-pound bull that refuses to fight. “Ferdinand “ is a first-rate animated tale adapted from the beloved 1936 children’s book about a pacifist Spanish bull who just loves to sit around and sniff flowers. It’s often dark, sometimes whacky, but true to the heart of the book and beautifully brought to life in modern Spain. Carlos Saldanha, the director of “Rio” and “Ice Age” movies, and screenwriters Robert L. Baird, Tim Federle and Brad Copeland faced a daunting task turning a spare 66-page book by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson into more than 100 minutes of film. But they’ve largely succeeded, while adding more serious issues along the way, including animal rights, rigged economic systems, nature versus nurture, cowardice, and the importance of looking out for each other. Not bad for a kid’s flick, huh? It also plunges another sword in the sport of bull fighting. At its core, “Ferdinand” is an antibullying statement that stars a bull. In a neat twist, that bull who refuses to fight is voiced by professional wrestler John Cena, a man who makes his living with violence. Ferdinand is bred to fight but won’t. His dad and peers at a bull fighting ranch all want to go into the ring and take on a matador. “Is it OK if it’s not my dream?” the young Ferdinand asks. No, he’s told. “You’re either a fighter or you’re meat.” After his father disappears, our bullish conscientious objector manages to escape and ends up in a peaceful flower farm, lovingly taken care of by a young girl. Good for Ferdinand, but bad for the filmmakers, who have more than another hour more to fill. Enter a cavalcade of strange and bewildering creatures: three crafty hedgehogs, three condescending Lipizzaner horses and an unhinged goat called Lupe. Kate McKinnon voices the goat and her performance is Robin Williams-in-”Aladdin” level work. A film

Associated Press

This image released by Twentieth Century Fox shows a scene from the animated film, “Ferdinand.” that was overly dark suddenly gets an infusion of silliness and comic genius. We take a few detours — there’s a brilliant dance competition between breakdancing bulls and the prancing horses; an unorthodox running of the bulls, this time with the animals chased by bad guys through the streets on Segways; and an utterly wonderful interpretation of a bull in a china shop. Ferdinand is the only bull to realize that the entire bullfighting game is fixed and tries to convince his peers to flee (the voice actors include a very good Peyton

Manning — yes, that Peyton Manning — as a bull prone to vomiting, and a hysterical David Tennant as a very hairy Scottish bull.) Ferdinand rescues some of his pals from the “chop shop” — note: seeing this with your kids may become uncomfortable if you promised hamburgers afterward — then sacrifices himself for the good of the group and ends up facing the meanest matador in all of Spain in the ring in Madrid. Will he finally fight? Will he die for his convictions? There are a few weird notes. It’s a little

strange to hear the Ferdinand we grew up with under a Spanish cork tree now have a SoCal surfer accent, saying he’s “stoked,” ‘’hold that thought” and “this is some next level stuff.” He also does that weird thing where he talks to fellow animals but is mute when it comes to communicating with humans. And the musical choices are a little odd. Nick Jonas offers the new soaring ballad “Home” and the Colombian artist Juanes delivers with “Lay Your Head On Me.” But did we really need the unearthing of the 20-year-old “Macarena”?

Movies “The Shape of Water” a true sleeper By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge There is a new film dripping into theatres this month called “The Shape of Water” that defies most movie conventions. I don’t mean to say that it forsakes plot or eschews things like cinematography or a unique score. Rather, it features a lead character that is mute and a fifth lead that isn’t human, but that has more humanity that the villain with second billing. Writer/director/ producer Guillermo del Toro again has a winning recipe here for his unparalleled ability to blend together multiple genres into a mess that is often misunderstood or avoided altogether. I refer to a picture like last year’s “Crimson Peak”. What was that? A Victorian horror film? Ick. Where “The Shape of Water” differs is that it has a driving love story at its center that withstands the science fiction, horror, and military themes that run through it like random thoughts. It’s one of the better films I’ve seen all year.

It’s obvious that the filmmaker was influenced to make this movie by his fondness for “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, the 1954 sci-fi classic in which Kay (Julie Adams) is abducted by a beastie from the deep while on an expedition with a bunch of scientists. I also have a sweet spot for this picture, having seen it on the big screen four years ago with the unique opportunity to meet Adams after the show (thanks, Friends of the Wildey!) and get an autographed copy of her biography, “Lucky Southern Star”. Thinking that “The Shape of Water” isn’t kin to this movie is like saying “Field of Dreams” doesn’t preach baseball. Instead, we’re able to see what might have happened if Kay and the Creature were allowed to fall in love and be left to their own designs - no flames, no dashing interruptions, no rescuing of the willing damsel. I’m here to tell you that I understand why this idea could be offputting, but I was also in a packed auditorium of moviegoers that clearly enjoyed themselves.

Eliza (Sally Hawkins) is a cleaning woman for a government lab circa the middle 1960s. You can pin this movie’s timeline down to the days after Yuri Gagarin’s spaceflight and before the assassination of JFK. It’s at the height of the Cold War and tensions run high throughout the building, but Eliza cares for none of that. She’s used to living a solitary life because of vicious scars about either side of her neck, leading to her inability to speak. She was an orphan and has grown into adulthood without a family to influence her upbringing. Instead, her support system has two people in it: her neighbor, Giles (Richard Jenkins, amazing as usual), a struggling artist whose advertising work is being canned in favor of photography, and Zelda (Octavia Spencer, equally amazing, also as usual), her pithy co-worker. Together, they make up for Eliza’s perceived sense of incompletion and help to ease the drudgery of her day-to-day. Then, out of the blue, a scientist (Michael Stuhlbarg) and his security ape, Strickland (Michael Shannon), drag a monster from

South America into Eliza’s lab. He’s humanoid, but covered with scales. His sleeks skin, weirdly-blinking eyes, and thick, powerful gills are cool as can be and not really all that unusual for the tone this movie sets quite easily in its idiosyncratic style. Veteran creature actor Doug Jones is the man inside the monster, a given for a production with del Toro’s credibility. Our heroine learns of the beast when she first sees him in a tank and has an instant connection with him. Before long, she’s plotting to rescue him away from Strickland’s cattle prod and return him to a natural environment. Before that, though, the story involves a lot of gruesome maiming, testimonials on homophobia, cartoonish Russian gangster melodrama, and interspecies love scenes that aren’t even the craziest things about this movie. “The Shape of Water” runs 123 minutes and is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, and language. I give this film four stars out of four.

Winslet can’t salvage “Wonder Wheel” By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press The great playwright Eugene O’Neill looms as large over Woody Allen’s latest film as the giant Ferris wheel that dominates the movie’s Coney Island setting. It’s not exactly clear whether “Wonder Wheel “ is an ambitious homage to O’Neill or a blatant theft of his work. Either way, it will be hard going for even the biggest Allen fan. It’s pitch dark, with little of Allen’s signature quirk and plenty of stilted dialogue. “Oh God, spare me the bad drama!” one character wails at the end and you’ll commiserate. O’Neill has always been held in high regard by Allen and he’s evidently borrowed so much from the master that what begins as a period drama set at the Brooklyn seaside just after World War II slowly transforms into O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” complete with a family at each other’s throats, alcoholic

numbness and the lady of the house half out of her mind, trying on an old gown. The film directed and written by Allen explores the intersection of four lives — a struggling blue-collar couple played by Jim Belushi and Kate Winslet, and two younger characters, Juno Temple as Belushi’s estranged daughter, and Justin Timberlake as a wannabe playwright and summer lifeguard who becomes a love interest to both women. There’s also a young son who is a firebug — and a cliche. The film feels more like an old play exercise retooled for the big screen. Allen uses Timberlake as the narrator — “Let me fill you in on that” — and he turns toward the camera often to address the plot and his role in it, a device that grows weary. Allen has made Timberlake increasingly unreliable but warns us early that it may happen when the young hunk explains that he loves melodrama and larger-thanlife characters. “My tragic flaw is I’m too romantic a character,” he says in a delivery

as wooden as the boardwalk. It’s not Timberlake’s fault — Allen makes him talk in a highly mannered manner, like a trying-too-hard playwright. “The heart has its own hieroglyphics,” Timberlake says. Winslet, playing a onetime-actress now hard-bitten waitress at a clam shack, falls for Timberlake’s much younger character. She, too, indicates to him that she’s unreliable, just playing a part. “I’m acting,” she says. (Even the film’s setting — “1950s” — is vague and imprecise.) Allen opens this strange door and then abandons it, although there’s a wonderful moment when we realize Timberlake has begun lying to us when he becomes infatuated by Temple’s character. He fits oddly in the film, a walking and talking cinematic device who gradually becomes subsumed by the family he’s helping rip apart. Belushi is perfectly cast as the blustery, bully husband, but his character’s weird adoration of his pretty daughter may strike some viewers as hitting a little too close to

home (Allen had an affair with his thenpartner’s adopted daughter, now his wife). As the summer love triangle heats up, the movie gets darker and more tragic. One bright spot is a mini-”Sopranos” reunion when Tony Sirico and Steve Schirripa show up as mobsters. Another is the soundtrack of jazzy pop from the era, beautifully integrated. (When the young boy is setting fires, we hear “Kiss of Fire.”) Another plus is production designer Santo Loquasto’s beautiful recreation of a weather-beaten Coney Island, complete with a Ferris wheel that slowly turns but goes nowhere, a fitting symbol for characters who might as well be on their own hamster wheels. Despite a stunn ing per f or man ce b y Wi n s l e t a n d s o m e b e a u t i f u l cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, “Wonder Wheel” loses its charms quickly and you’ll soon be begging to get off this particular ride. Did you really think you wouldn’t get ripped off during a visit to Coney Island?

“I, Tonya”

December 28, 2017

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“I, Tonya” is the Tonya Harding film you never knew you wanted: an outrageously entertaining reappraisal of the Olympic figure skater who, in 1994, was involved in a scheme to injure her main rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Resurrecting Harding from the yellowed pages of ‘90s tabloids may seem about as necessary as a production of “Lorena Bobbitt on Ice.” But yesterday’s media spectacle has been very good for today’s movies. It’s no surprise by now that the tabloid caricatures sketched in a sensational news stories don’t always do justice to the truth. The more layered truths behind scandals of the past have made for some great documentaries (particularly last year’s “O.J.: Made in America” and “Hot Coffee,” the illuminating story behind the coffee that was “too hot”) and a number of recent dramatic highlights, like Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming “Molly’s Game,” about the woman callously dubbed the “poker princess” by the tabloids. Craig Gillespie’s movie — an “I, Claudius” for less regal times — isn’t a sober reassessment of Harding. It’s a winking, rollicking dark comedy both empathetic and pugnacious. It reframes Harding’s story as an American tragicomedy with some of the unapologetic, this-is-thereal-America sneer of “GoodFellas.” ‘’I, Tonya” is a peek behind a media circus that can’t help going along for the ride, too. “I, Tonya,” written by Steven Rogers, is introduced as: “Based on irony free, wildly contradictory, totally true interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly.” RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “pervasive language, violence, and some sexual content/nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“The Last Jedi”

A welcome disturbance in the Force, Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” is, by wide measure, the trippiest, scrappiest and most rule-breaking “Star Wars” adventure yet. Not the exercise in nostalgia that was J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens,” Johnson’s Episode VIII takes George Lucas’ space opera in new, often thrilling, and sometimes erratic directions while finding the truest expression yet of the saga’s underlying ethos of camaraderie in resistance to oppression. Though there are countless familiar broad strokes — rebel escapes, Jedi soulsearching, daddy issues — “The Last Jedi” has discovered some new moves yet, in the galaxy far, far away. As the second installment in this third “Star Wars” trilogy, “The Last Jedi” is like the inverted corollary of “The Empire Strike Back” (long the super fan’s favorite). While it is, like its part-two predecessor, often murky and weird, Johnson’s frequently comic film distinguishes itself by upending the traditional power dynamics of heroes and bit players in the Star Wars galaxy. Abrams’s finest touch in his zippy and nimble reboot was in his diverse casting — in particular Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, as Finn, the Stormtrooper turned good guy. But Johnson, who also wrote the film, has gone further to shake up the familiar roles and rhythms of Star Wars. Scattershot and loose-limbed, “The Last Jedi” doesn’t worship at its own altar, often undercutting its own grandiosity. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of sci-fi action and violence.” RUNNING TIME: 152 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
