Watershed Nature Center The Watershed Nature Center is a city-owned and locally-supported park in Edwardsville, managed by the Nature Preserve Foundation Inc. Encompassing 46 acres of land, the spacious center offers a one-mile trail with two observation towers and a wildlife viewing blind, as well as native southwestern Illinois habitats, such as prairie, upland and lowland forest, and wetland, for public enjoyment from dawn to dusk. The grounds are ideal for bird watching, with over 150 species of birds reported thus far, and they are home to a variety of reptiles and local mammal life. The welcome center, which provides information in addition to other handson educational exhibits, is open from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, or by appointment, for free.
Referred to by locals as simply the “Watershed, the center was converted from an old, abandoned sewage lagoon in 1991 by locals John and Kay Kendall. The City of Edwardsville endorsed the project, and community members contributed to their efforts. The Operating Engineers 520 excavated two lakes and wetland areas as training exercises at no cost, while local families and businesses collaborated to transform the land. Finally, John and Kay obtained a grant from the Illinois Department of Conservation for the construction of the welcome center. The Nature Center was officially completed and opened in 1995. The Nature Center currently hosts field trips for local schools and youth groups upon request and is partially paved and handicapped accessible. It connects to Madison County’s system of bike trails via the Watershed Trail for those in search of a longer hike.

The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum is a repurposed schoolhouse located in “Old Town” Glen Carbon that serves to preserve the community’s history. It houses local artifacts and photos, which are on display for public viewing Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Non-summer hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The building itself is also part of the museum, boasting the original hardwood floors and tin ceiling from its construction in 1914. In addition to its regular hours, the museum hosts events, including the Blue Carpet Corridor Festival Weekend, which celebrates Route 66 through outdoor musical performances. Since originally functioning as a school, the Heritage Museum has been home to a WWII scrap metal collection center, a blood bank, a civil defense building, a police station, administration offices, doctors offices, and a library. Finally, in 2014, the U.S. Parks Service and the Department of the Interior in Washington D.C. included the building on the National Register of Historic Places, making it the first listing in Glen Carbon. The building now functions as a museum and archive year round. Updates about future events can be found on the Village of Glen Carbon’s website at glen-carbon.il.us.

Benjamin Stephenson House The Benjamin Stephenson House is the oldest brick home in Madison County, and a historic landmark signifying the connection between the founding of Edwardsville, which is the third oldest city in Illinois, its establishment as a center of government and commerce, and Illinois gaining statehood. The house hosts guided tours by docents in period dress during regular operating hours. Additionally, the house offers educational events, special shortterm exhibits, trivia nights, sewing circles, auctions and summer camps. Benjamin Stephenson, the original occupant of the historical house, was a founding father of Edwardsville, along with locally recognized Ninian Edwards. He also played an instrumental role in gaining statehood for the State of Illinois, later acting as one of 33 men to create the state constitution. Leading Edwardsville into a time of political and social prominence, Stephenson left behind both a legacy and an impressive example of period architecture. Constructed in 1820 in the Federal style, Stephenson’s two-story, upper class home contains original mill work and Adams-style mantels. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, among a small number of houses constructed in the early 19th century. Today, the Stephenson House acts as a living history museum, with a learning center and period activities open to visitors of all ages. Visit stephensonhouse.org for a list of events.

Yanda Log Cabin The Yanda Log Cabin is a historical home, on display as part of the museum, in “Old Town” Glen Carbon believed to have been built by immigrants William Yanda and his wife, Anna Zeola, in 1853. It is an addition to the Heritage Museum and occasionally opens for special events, such as trick or treating for children on Halloween or a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. William and Anna moved from Bohemia, Austria, and raised ten children in the cabin. Frank, their oldest son, followed in his father’s footsteps to become a blacksmith, later working in nearby towns
and raising his own children in the cabin. Eventually, Frank sold the structure to his son Frank Jr., who served as one of the first mayors of Glen Carbon. Frank Jr. had no children. The cabin was rediscovered when the Village of Glen Carbon bought the lot and found the original structure under a modern home. The city began renovations in 1989 and completed the cabin for the Centennial Celebration in 1992. Now, the cabin again reflects the living environment of a 19th century mining town home for its visitors.

The Wildey Theatre The Wildey Theatre, located in downtown Edwardsville, is a restored Art Deco style theatre situated on historic Main Street. It offers rooms for event rentals, as well as entertainment, such as live performances and films. The Marquee room, with maple and exposed brick walls, in addition to a third floor room, are available for various occasions including official business meetings, video conferences, employee training sessions, wedding receptions, fundraisers, and other special celebrations. The Wildey also presents many locally sourced and throwback events, ranging from dance performances, to small theater productions, tribute band concerts, and classic films. The theater’s hours largely depend on its event lineup, which can be found online. The Wildey opened in 1909, its main floor originally serving as an opera house, and its second floor open to meetings of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. The versatile venue later became a full time movie theater, before closing on March 8, 1984 following the opening of the film, “The Big Chill.” It was deemed a “Local Landmark” by the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission in 1986, but sat vacant until 1999, when the City of Edwardsville acquired the property via a state grant. The city recognized The Wildey’s value and decided to renovate the building to its former glory. Renovations were completed in 2011, allowing the treasured Wildey to open, fully functioning, once again. Now, the Wildey hosts frequent events on weekends and some week days, providing concessions and access to the ground floor wine bar, “Encore.” For a full listing of upcoming performances, visit the wildeytheatre.com. For a more complete history and photographs, visit historicalwildeytheatre.com.

Edwardsville Children’s Museum The Edwardsville Children’s Museum is a unique venue intended for children to explore, learn, and play along with their parents. It is open to field trips, birthday parties, and casual family visits from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with additional summer hours listed online. Admission is $7, and includes access to twelve exhibits, including a dentist office, café, fitness studio, and ice cream parlor, many of which are modeled after local businesses. Various educational programs are also offered throughout the year for both children and teachers alike. The museum occupies the old Leclaire Schoolhouse and was recently renovated after holding a fundraiser. It previously operated on minimal funding and parttime staff, though major efforts have been put forth to increase community involvement. Exhibits modeled after local businesses were actually sponsored by many of the businesses themselves, while the Edwardsville Parks and Recreation Department helped to acquire a grant for additional improvements. A new membership program was developed as well, which offers gift programs and discounts offered as incentives to support the museum. With classes ranging from “PAW for Reading,” to “Baby Sign Language” and “Little Architects,” the Edwardsville Children’s Museum has much to offer for the local community and beyond.

Published since 1862, the Edwardsville Intelligencer has delivered local news into Edwardsville, Glen Carbon and surrounding communities. As Edwardsville’s oldest, continuously-operated business, the Edwardsville Intelligencer has grown and prospered in a world where newspapers have evolved from hot-lead type to computer generated pages. The Intelligencer has withstood radio, television and the Internet, joining the latter to provide the community with www.theintelligencer.com This 2017 Community Guide is just a sample of the products The Intelligencer has to offer. You will find local municipalities information, entertainment opportunities, dining options and home services providers here. We hope you enjoy this year’s issue. In addition, Glen Carbon has much to offer. The “Old Town” section showcases a quaint, small town image and is loved by both residents and visitors alike.
