Technology takes latest dementia research, combines with extensive data
By Julia Biggs julia.biggs@hearstil.com
EDWARDSVILLE — Alzheimer’s disease affects more than five million Americans and as many as 16 million are projected to have the disease in 2050. It’s the sixth leading cause of death in Illinois and will affect more than 200,000 Illinois residents this year. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Arts & Issues tackles the overwhelming ailment and other forms of dementia in its series when Arts & Issues presents SIUE alumnus Dr. John Q. Walker as he discusses “Solving Alzheimer’s” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 12. The disease currently is incurable, but Walker will discuss whether Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia can be detected early, as well as steps that can be taken to slow its progression. Walker is the chief technology officer and co-founder of North Carolina-based uMethod
Health, of which its focus lies in helping individuals dealing with chronic diseases with multiple underlying medical causes; uMethod Walker has developed a “precision-medicine engine” that takes the latest dementia research and combines it with a patient’s extensive data to help doctors determine what is causing the patient’s cognitive decline. This in turn helps to identify treatment plans. Using this technology, physicians can practice precision medicine and give patients the

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington
That’s a Lota’ Burger
In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@ sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas or suggestions.
I love going to Fairview Heights, Illinois, where you can shop for almost anything. Not only do you have the beautiful St. Clair Square mall, which still seems to be thriving, but specialty stores proliferate the surrounding area, where you can buy items ranging from furniture to garden items, bedding, liquor, specialty clothiers, with choices, choices, choices. It’s very easy to spend an entire day in the general region. And if you are there all day, you have to eat — at least once. Luckily the choices of restaurants abound, too, in the mall and surrounding community: Houlihan’s, The Chuck Wagon, Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesday, Johnny’s Pizza & Pasta, to name only a few. On a recent trip to the shopping mecca with my daughter, we chose Lotawata Creek Southern Grill, to see what was on the menu. Wild Bill’s BBQ Burger is a 12-ounce burger, topped with American and pepper jack cheese (my daughter picked this one; not me, I would order mine sans cheese), thick-cut onion rings and a housemade barbecue sauce — all served on a toasted bun, with an abundance of fries on the side. It’s definitely enough to take home for dinner that night or lunch the next day. I tried the BLT sandwich (bacon is a weakness of mine) that was on the new lunch menu, consisting of bacon, lettuce and tomato, served on homemade French bread toast with French fries and mayo on the side. I particularly liked the French bread that gave it a bit of a different twist. Lotawata Creek Southern Grill’s Wild Bill’s BBQ Burger Just for something fun, we tried the bucket of rings — thin-sliced onions, dipped in homemade batter and fried. Other appetizers include quesadillas, mozzarella cheese planks, boneless wings, stuffed mushrooms and fried pickles, which I recently discovered See FOOD, Page 7

and Smith’s vocals never disappoint. Aside from the top-notch quality of the performance and production, there lies something more… the humbleness of humanity. I am always struck by how certain bands can connect with their fans and Shinedown is at the top of the list for these moments. No artist has ever shaken my hand as I have photographed them from the pit, except Smith — and not only me, but every photographer, security person and fan he could reach. The handshakes were genuine and for a moment we were all on the same level, a moment I will not soon forget. If you missed this show you should definitely not only be disappointed, but motivated as well — disappointed because you missed this show, but motivated to get tickets to see them at the Illinois State Fair, on Aug. 17 in Springfield.
