Big event gives big hand to families in need By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Taste of Edwardsville revelers — and there are many — know the festive atmosphere, exciting sounds and enticing aromas from the restaurants that voluntarily share their fare, but there’s much more behind the scenes of one of the year’s biggest social events. Taste of Edwardsville is a path to helping ease the financial burdens of families, within Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7, who are facing unexpected expenses due to unplanned medical financial crises. Every person who attends the always-sold out Taste of Edwardsville — recently celebrating its 11th annual April 6 — supports Edwardsville Neighbors’ mission. “Our mission is to ease the financial burdens of local families in need, while inspiring generosity and goodwill among the residents of our community,” said Edwardsville Neighbors board member and Source Juicery owner Michelle Motley, who’s been on the

and Kathie Opel, along with their family, organized the first Taste of Edwardsville as a standalone fundraiser benefiting the Greg Seibert Foundation, named for Chad’s own stepfather, who suffered a spinal stroke. The following year, the Opels founded Edwardsville Neighbors, formerly Neighbors In Need, when it became a certified 501(c)(3) charitable organization in its own right. Since then, Edwardsville Neighbors has helped more than 150 families. “My stepfather had paralysis from the waist down,” Chad Opel recalled to The Edge. “After that, we realized, why wouldn’t we continue to fund-raise for this incredible, inspiring community. Why would we be reactive instead of proactive and why wouldn’t we be there when people really need some help?” Upon witnessing Taste of Edwardsville’s immediate success, the outpouring of generosity by the Edwardsville community and the difference it made for the Opels’ own family, which includes daughters Sami, 4, and Ellie, 3, they were inspired and committed to make this an ongoing community effort — always with the goal of helping other families in similar times of crisis. Today, Edwardsville Neighbors continues to work diligently to promote its services in the community and actively seek and accept nominations for families facing medical hardship within District 7. Through the nonprofit’s website — edwardsvilleneighbors.org — people are nominated to be recipients of Edwardsville Neighbors’ benevolence. “Some people don’t know about us, don’t know that there’s an organization like

Just by attending the Taste of Edwardsville event, they will help a family going through medical financial crises, within that year that they attend the event,” Motley explained. Edwardsville Neighbors Board of Directors have robust relationships with school nurses, churches and other nonprofits, Chad said. All of Edwardsville Neighbors’ fundraising events, community efforts, nomination and awards of assistance are overseen, reviewed and decided by the acting Board of Directors. “You expect friends’ and family support, but when restaurants and business leaders support an event just because it’s a cause, that’s inspiring,” Opel said. “Plus, it was a blast. At the end of the day, you have fun and support your community — it’s a win-win.” That win-win motivated the Opels to immediately start planning the second annual Taste of Edwardsville in 2010 and plenty of supporters wanted to become regular volunteers for the cause. Thus, they formed a board, of which its members can occasionally change from year to year, but many continue to volunteer, especially around Taste of Edwardsville. “We didn’t even have a family in mind that first year and now, 10 years later, we have helped over 150 families in District 7,” Chad said. “Anyone can nominate through our site. Immediately when someone is nominated, two board members are selected to meet with the family. We get to know them and bring

How not to break the bank on streaming services

By MAE ANDERSON and SARAH SKIDMORE SELL AP Business Writers With more TV streaming services than ever before, from newcomers like Disney Plus to stalwarts like Netflix, consumers may feel the ideal viewing experience is finally at hand. Americans have, on average, three streaming video subscription services, according to a recent study of digital media trends by Deloitte. While some have dropped cable and its average bill of around $100 a month altogether, about 43% have both pay TV and streaming subscriptions. Yet patching together a variety of services to get just what one wants isn’t always seamless. Families and individuals can still find themselves with service that doesn’t perfectly suit their viewing habits. And those monthly subscriptions can add up fast. “It doesn’t make sense to pay for a bunch of content you have no interest in watching,” said Bruce McClary, vice president of marketing for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. “Finding a service that lets you scale your channel lineup based on your interests can also help you avoid paying for things you don’t need.” A little research on which services are best can help save big bucks. FOR FAMILIES Disney is making the biggest play for family viewership. The owner of Disney

Channel, the Star Wars franchise and most recently Fox’s entertainment business is betting its mix of family-friendly franchises and beloved animated classics, along with original programming, will make the Disney Plus service irresistible to families, even if they already subscribe to other services. The service, launching Nov. 12, will cost $7 a month initially. For some kids, there may be no substitute for watching Disney’s “Frozen” over and over again. But other services that families might already subscribe to have a lot of family-friendly programming too. Amazon Prime ($119 per year or $13 per month for Prime loyalty program membership; Prime Video alone costs $9 a month), Hulu ($6 to $12 per month), and Netflix ($9 to $16 per month) all offer kids programming. Another choice for parents: HBO Now ($15 a month) is the home for the classic kids TV show “Sesame Street.” And for spendthrifts, YouTube’s free Kids channel offers a stream of kid-friendly fare, although quality varies widely. FOR MOVIE BUFFS Movie fans will soon have to work a bit harder to find movies to stream. As Disney, Fox, Universal and Warner Brothers and others offer their own streaming services, they will all eventually pull their content from Netflix. But niche services are there to fill the void. Classic movies can be difficult to find

streaming. Movie fans suffered a loss when AT&T, which bought Time Warner last year, decided to discontinue FilmStruck, a streaming service that was a collaboration between Turner Classic Movies and the Criterion Collection. But a similar service called The Criterion Channel that offers 1,000 classic and contemporary films is stepping up to fill the void. It costs $11 a month or $99 for a year. Other movie-centric streaming services include Fandor ($6 per month or $50 per year) or Mubi ($11 per month). Both offer a curated selection of movies. Those on a budget can try Kanopy, a streaming service that works with libraries to offer card holders streaming movies for free. FOR SPORTS FANS Sports fans do have streaming options, but they cost more since sports must be watched live. Basic live TV options are cheaper but may not include sports channels. Which service you choose depends on which sport or which team you want to watch. There are a variety of live TV streaming services that offer a wide range of sports, but they’ve recently been raising their prices . Fubo TV offers more than 85 channels including ones that broadcast football, baseball, soccer and other sports. It costs $45 for the first month, then $55 a month after that. DirecTV Now costs $50 a month for the cheapest tier. Sling TV costs $25 to $40 a month. Hulu raised the price for its live-TV service in February, by $5, to $45. Sony’s PlayStation Vue

costs $45 to $80 a month. Google’s YouTube TV is increasing its monthly fee to $50. It launched at $35 and has raised prices as it added more channels. Most of the live TV services offer the major sports channels such as Fox Sports and NBC Sports Network, as well as games broadcast on network TV. But ESPN, for example, is on Hulu Live and YouTube TV but not Fubo TV, so fans of a specific team should examine listings for each service. There’s no budget offering for watching high profile sporting events. But Disney’s ESPN Plus costs $5 a month or $50 for the year. It offers some live games, including some hockey, soccer and baseball games, as well as content about sports like ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary series. But you can’t watch most major league sports games. MIX AND MATCH If you’re a sports fan who also loves movies and has a family, you’ll have to mix and match services while trying to stay within your budget. It is still possible to stay below the monthly cost of cable, says the NFCC’s McClary. “The acceptable threshold for spending is up to each household, but most ‘live’ and ‘on demand’ streaming services would be on the low end of the scale compared to traditional cable packages,” he said. “One good measuring stick is to compare the monthly rate to monthly content consumption patterns and what it would cost if you paid movie rental rates each time you watch a program.”

At 96, she still swings in band founded in 1951

By MALCOLM ABRAM Akron Beacon Journal On a recent chilly evening in Tallmadge, the Venue Banquet Center was mostly empty as the oldest big band in Akron prepared for its Spring Gala. The Moonlight Serenaders were founded in 1951 and have been keeping the hits of the era alive for 68 years. The 20 members’ ages and tenures span a wide range, but only one has been on the bandstand for the group’s entire history. Mona Schaeffer, a 96-year-old trumpeter, mother and grandmother, has played more gigs in more bands than most of her bandmates combined, and she’s still going strong. Schaeffer’s tenure is as unique as her entry into the Serenaders. The band was founded by the local Masons, who at the time did not allow women to perform. “They had to get a special dispensation … so Mona could play with them,” said band publicist, producer and alto and baritone saxophonist John Smith. Schaeffer doesn’t recall that detail. “Oh, I don’t know anything about that. But I was the only woman in the group,” she said

during a rehearsal break. She never had any problems from her allmale bandmates. “No. I’ve been with men all my life,” she said laughing. The Serenaders were rehearsing for their Spring Gala, and the old-school bandstand was set up and the room already decorated. Director/conductor Karl Tittl led them through the set list, with a few false starts and some suggestions from members about tempos. Five singers — three ladies dubbed the “Serenader Sisters” and two men — waited their turn to step up. First the band ran through the dinner set, which Smith referred to as “the soft, quiet, goto-sleep music,” promising that they’d “pick it up in the next set.” The tunes included familiar classics “Moonlight in Vermont” and “Someone to Watch Over Me,” one of several to feature a melodic spotlight for the slight-ofbuild Schaeffer, who admitted, “I don’t play as well as I used to.” She may not have the power she once had, but she still has the energy, as she currently plays in four different groups: the Serenaders, two concert bands and a German band that mostly plays Oktoberfests. Schaeffer first picked up the trumpet as a

teenager, though not quite voluntarily: “My mother played the clarinet and the sax, and my aunt played the sax and clarinet and accordion, and so they needed a brass player and that was me.” After graduating from Central High School at 19, Schaeffer married a musician, studied music at the University of Akron and then went pro, playing in a swing band with her mom and aunt. “That’s what I started with, all girls, long before you were born,” she said with a chuckle. “I played with a professional band. I joined the union when I was 19 and played with The Co-eds, which I’m sure you’ve never heard of. But they were pretty popular during the war because the fellas had all gone to war, so we did a lot of playing. We played in Cleveland and Youngstown and Gary, Indiana, all during the war,” she recalled. During the day, she worked at American Rubber. Just as her mother and aunt passed down the musical genes, Schaeffer taught her daughter and granddaughter. She’s proud that her granddaughter works in the music department at the Library of Congress.

I Like Juicy Salmon, and I Cannot Lie!

And when it’s in front of my face, I fall in love … you get the idea (or some will, anyway). But ,in other words, I like salmon — a lot! The citrus honey glazed salmon at Bella Milano is so juicy, with the sweet citrus glaze, and sitting on a bed of sautéed spinach, it is hard to resist. I almost thought I tasted a touch of pineapple in the glaze — and perhaps I did, or maybe it was the honey. And now that I know how good it is, I won’t be able to order anything else. I know myself — I get stuck on something at certain establishments, and I don’t even want to look at the rest of the menu. But now that I swore allegiance to the salmon, and I’m looking at the menu, there are so many wonderful-sounding choices, I actually might have a hard time not trying something else. For instance, chicken Milano, which is lightly breaded, charbroiled chicken breast with mushrooms and green onions (OK, you can have provel cheese sauce, if you want) or an 8-ounce pepperloin filet, hand-cut and rolled in cracked black pepper, then pan-seared and topped with red wine reduction sauce. Sounds really good. And, I did almost get the Mediterranean snapper. I was trying to choose one of two recommended fish dinners a week, that I’ve been trying to stick with. The snapper is pan-seared and topped with grape tomatoes, red onions, capers and white wine lemon butter sauce (and feta, if you choose). It sounded good and, at first, it was a toss-up, but in the end, I went with the salmon. It was an excellent choice, but maybe the snapper would have been too. Hmmm … I will have to try it out and compare. We do usually try to forego the starters or small plates, and reserve our calories consumed for the entrée, but I have to say the choices, like lump crab cakes, crab stuffed mushrooms or bruschetta Capri on the small plates menu definitely have a ring to them, as do the zucchini sticks on the starters See FOOD, Page 17

Think of them as a combination of border patrol agents and celibate monks who stand guard at the Wall, which runs across the north of Westeros and kept out the Wildlings, a fierce nation that doesn’t recognize the kings and princes of Westeros. Eventually though, the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings join forces against something far more terrifying: the Night King and his White Walkers, an army of the frozen undead, who when last seen have come crashing through the Wall. Daenerys decides to sail across the Narrow Sea and reclaim the Iron Throne held by her father, the mad king. He too had a penchant for fire, though it was more about burning people alive. Her brother Rhaegar is also crucial to the story for allegedly kidnapping Ned Stark’s

sister, Lyanna, before he and his family were killed. TIME AND PLACE Martin has created a world that’s makebelieve but feels somewhat real. It’s like a mashup of feudal England and Tolkien’s Middle Earth with a healthy dose of sex, violence, conniving, power-grabbing, more sex, more violence and lots of full-frontal nudity. Some other prominent places: Dragonstone: Former home of House Targaryen, an island where the dragons of the past resided with the family. Essos: A continent lying across the Narrow Sea from Westeros. It’s where Daenerys was hiding in the beginning, and where the horseloving Dothraki roam. Braavos: a free city in Essos, home to the Iron Bank — to which the Lannisters owe some gold. Also home to the Faceless — religious types and assassins who worship the Many-Faced God of death, and collect faces of the dead from all over the world. Arya came up through the ranks here. Iron Islands: Home to a naval fleet of warriors led by House Greyjoy, who son Theon was a ward of the Starks and has been through some rough times since then. WHAT’S NEXT? As the final seasonbegins, the three houses have pledged to unite their armies — along with the Wildlings— to fight their common enemy: the White Walkers. The zombie-like creatures have broken through the Wall and they now include one of Daenerys’ dragons among their ranks.

Graceland boss says he is not threatening to leave

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The head of the company that controls Graceland says he is not threatening to move the Memphis, Tennessee-based tourist attraction centered on the life of singer Elvis Presley, despite comments that had suggested otherwise. The Memphis City Council is considering a $100 million expansion plan at Graceland that includes a proposal for tax-based incentives. The tourist venue includes Presley's former home, plus an entertainment complex across the street. It attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year from around the world. Concerns about the attraction's future arose this week when Graceland Holdings managing partner Joel Weinshanker was quoted in story by The Wall Street Journal story saying he has received offers "to take every piece of wood and panel and move it," including Asia and Nashville as possibilities. Some fans and social media posts interpreted the statement as a threat to move. But Weinshanker clarified those comments, saying Graceland has not sought out offers to move and it simply will not expand if the master plan is not approved by the council.

‘Pet Sematary’s’ second half jumps into maximum overdrive

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist We have to establish a few facts at the onset of this week’s review. By facts, I mean my own point of view that will be supported with a few brief sentences. My first statement is that horror films in the early 1990s were terrible. The specific window of time I’m pinpointing is roughly the post-’80s slasher heyday, up until 1996, when “Scream” (allegedly) reinvented the genre and there were sequels galore of previous horror films (“Psycho IV,” two additional “Child’s Play” movies, etc.). It was awful, but especially if you were an adolescent boy trying to find a way to understand entertainment as it applied to your peer group. The secondary part of my thesis is that a primary culprit who can be blamed for this lack of quality is someone I would stop just short of naming as co-conspirator, author Stephen King. Prolific and beloved, the writer has not always had the best luck with his work transferring to screen adaptation, somewhat because of his somewhat handsoff approach with screenplays, which he did not oversee or write. Between his two bestadapted works (adapted by others), “Stand By Me” and “The Shawshank Redemption,” nine other “King” movies came out that do not bear the scrutiny of time. And, 1989’s “Pet Sematary” rests squarely in the middle of that nostalgic slice of questionable production. Its

Little known actors Dale Midkiff and Denise Crosby starred in the original film in 1989 and that should tell you all you need to know about the era. The story is legitimately horrifying, even if the movie was a lot on the schlocky side. In 2019’s “Pet Sematary,” Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) relocates his family to the Maine woods to take a new job at a university. When their cat is killed on the busy road in front of their home, kindly neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) takes Dr. Creed beyond the town’s established pet cemetery (charmingly misspelled in the title) and they bury the kitty in a sacred burial ground of some long-dead native tribe. The long-haired tortoiseshell feline returns the next day, a lot meaner and more than just a little undead. We know this story by now, right? The Creeds then lose their little girl (the Creeds’ little boy dies in the 1989 flick), Ellie (Jeté Laurence), and grief prompts Dr. Creed to try his hand again at reincarnation, by interring Ellie in the tribal burial ground. But, it goes badly and death and destruction follow. Some are good (“The Green Mile”), some are awful (“Dreamcatcher”), and some are just indelible (“Secret Window” still gives me the shivers), but what happened in 2017 was the most noteworthy milestone of them all. “It” relaunched itself on the big screen that September, becoming the second adaptation of the novel following Tommy Lee Wallace’s 1990 miniseries of the same name. We all went nuts for “It,” the movie. Turns out, King’s works can become well-made horror films and made scary and open to more than $120 million in ticket sales. So, let’s redo them all! “Pet Sematary” is the first attempt at a remake of a film based on King’s works, and it’s a little uneven. The new cast is a mixed bag. Clarke and Amy Seimetz are adequate at the Creed parents. Lithgow is a good substitute for Fred Gwynne (the original Jud Crandall), but Lithgow plays the part differently and makes it his own. For me, the cat was an improvement in this one, the cat was great. But the best part of this movie is the little girl who plays doomed daughter Ellie (Laurence). It’s a role with n actual dialogue and purpose, not just a “MacGuffin.” The decision to alter which child is subject-

ed to the demonic curse inside this story was a big change. But, King was on-board, sharing that this is still his most personal and affecting novel. If you, like me, detest the lame special effects of the original and its bizarre settings, you’re going to be misled. Ben Platt moves away from ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ with latest album By ALICIA RANCILIO Associated Press Much of Ben Platt’s debut album “Sing to Me Instead” is inspired by past loves, but he laughs at the notion that he could be pulling a Taylor Swift. Platt says the songs are more about emotions than specifics, so there’s no need to give any former boyfriends a heads-up. “I didn’t feel the need to give any warnings,” he said recently. “Thankfully there’s nothing too harmful said about anyone … I’m sure if these people ever did find out that I had written about them, I’m sure they would agree the emotional experience was what I put across.” He does say there was something cathartic about looking back through the lens of music. “I always sort of laughed when Taylor Swift talks about relationships, and she can only move on when she’s put it into a song, but there’s a real truth to that.” The album doesn’t just put his exes in the rearview mirror, it also puts distance between Platt and his Tony Award-winning role in “Dear Evan Hansen.” Little on the album is reminiscent of the songs from the hit Broadway musical; instead, the “Sing to Me Instead” is a more soulful project. It was important to Platt, that his first album as an artist take him on a different path from the music he performed in his acting roles (He played the nerdy Benji in “Pitch Perfect” and its sequel). “I definitely wanted to make sure it was stylistically and sort of musically what I liked the most and what I love to sing,” said Platt, citing James Taylor, Carole King and Donny Hathaway as examples. Anyone coming to see the star when his concert kicks off in May and expecting to get a dose of “Dear Evan Hansen” take note: Platt won’t be singing any of that show’s songs on his tour. But he hasn’t completely left that character behind. Universal Pictures — and Platt’s producer dad Marc Platt — have secured the film rights to “Dear Evan Hansen” and he hasn’t ruled out reprising the role on the big screen. “I know it’s in development and being written. Of course, that would be a wonderful thing I would love to be a part of,” he said. In the interim, his next acting role is a much darker character than those he’s been most identified with. Platt stars in the upcoming Netflix series “The Politician” from Ryan Murphy, playing a wealthy, morally challenged teen seeking to win an election to secure his spot at Harvard.

Disney unveils new streaming service By MAE ANDERSON and MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writers Disney raised the curtain on a hotly anticipated video steaming service that’s aiming to topple industry pioneer Netflix, once a valuable ally of the Magic Kingdom. The service, called Disney Plus, has been in the works for more than year, but Thursday marked the first time that the longtime entertainment powerhouse has laid out plans for its attack on Netflix and a formidable cast of competitors, including Amazon, HBO Go and Showtime Anytime. Disney Plus will roll out in the U.S. on November 12 at a price of $6.99 per month, or $69.99 per year. That’s well below the $13 monthly fee Netflix charges for its most popular streaming plan, signaling Disney’s determination to woo subscribers as it vies to become a major player in a field that has turned “binge watching” into a common ritual. Like Netflix, Disney Plus will be free of ads. Subscribers will be able to download all of the shows and movies on Disney’s service to watch offline.

Netflix will still have a far deeper video programming lineup after spending tens of billions of dollars during the past six years on original shows such as “House of Cards,” ”Stranger Things” and “The Crown.” But Disney Plus will be able to draw upon a library of revered films dating back several

decades while it also forges into original programming. Its animated classics, including “Aladdin” and “The Jungle Book” will be available on the service when it launches. New shows already on tap include “The Mandalorian,” the first live action “Star Wars” series, created by Jon Favreau; a prequel to the “Star Wars” film “Rogue One,” starring Diego Luna; a series about the Marvel character Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston; a rebooted “High School Musical” series; and a new documentary series focused on Disney. Disney is approaching the streaming industry from a “position of strength, confidence and unbridled optimism,” CEO Bob Iger said Thursday. Iger has led the company since 2005 and expects to step down when his contract ends in 2021. New ‘Star Wars’ promises ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

“No one is ever really gone,” says the voice of Luke Skywalker in the first teaser trailer for “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which audiences finally learned will be called “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” Friday at a fan event in Chicago. The closely guarded film from director J.J. Abrams will put an end to the Skywalker saga that began over 40 years ago, but even as characters and actors have passed on, the footage shown at Star Wars Celebration suggests that as with all “Star Wars” films, death is just a technicality a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Mark Hamill’s Skywalker may have died at the end of the most recent installment but his voice dominates the teaser trailer, telling someone, possibly Daisy Ridley’s Rey, that, “this is your fight now.” And audiences got a tantalizing tease from another figure from the past: Emperor Palpatine from the original and prequel trilogies, whose ominous laugh closes out the promotional spot. Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa is back as well, despite the actress’s untimely passing in Dec. 2016, thanks to unused footage from “The Force Awakens” which Abrams was able to craft into its own narrative for this new film. “You can’t just recast and you can’t just have her disappear,” Abrams said. “The idea

of having a CG character wasn’t an option.” He’s in the process of editing and adding visual effects to the film which will hit theaters on Dec. 20 and said that despite Fisher’s death, “We’re working with her every day.” Abrams was joined on stage at the event by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and actors and droids alike including Ridley, Oscar Isaac (Poe), John Boyega (Finn), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), newcomer Naomi Ackie, who plays a character named Jannah, Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and even Billy Dee Williams, who reprises his role as Lando Calrissian in the new film after decades away. “How did I find Lando again?” Williams said. “Lando never left me.” “Star Wars” superfan Stephen Colbert moderated the panel, doing his best to get the tight-lipped cast and creators to reveal anything about the film. Although no one cracked under pressure, Abrams did reveal some previously known details, like the fact that “The Rise of Skywalker” will pick up “some time” after the events of “The Last Jedi.” Kennedy, quoting George Lucas, said however that “Episode IX” is indeed the third act of a three-act structure. But, predictably, there are still more questions than answers when it comes to “The Rise of Skywalker,” especially what will come after.

Iconic Muppets coming to a street near you

NEW YORK (AP) — Big Bird, Elmo and stars of "Sesame Street" are leaving their quiet neighborhood and embarking on a road trip. The nonprofit Sesame Workshop said Tuesday a selection of Muppets will take part in a 10-city trip to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary campaign with free park festivals, live performances and kid-friendly activities. S t e v e Yo u n g w o o d , t h e c h i e f operating officer of Sesame Workshop, says the tour is both "a nod to the work we've done and a nod to the work we're going to do" but also "a celebration and reward to everyone who helped us get here." The Muppets will spend FridaySunday in each city, filming segments for the show with local kids and highlighting people and places important to the community. There also will be activities like a giant maze, a treasure dig, photo opportunities, sweepstakes and a cookies-and-milk snack station. The tour starts June 1 in New York and then has Saturday celebrations in Washington, D.C., on June 8; Pittsburgh on June 15; Detroit on June 22; Chicago on June 29; Dallas on July 6; Kansas City on July 13; Denver on July 20; Seattle on July 27 and Los Angeles on Aug. 3. Five national touring productions coming to state By Tamara Browning State Journal-Register (TNS) Five national touring productions will be new to the Sangamon Auditorium stage for 2019-2020 on the campus of the University of Illinois Springfield. The University of Illinois Springfield Performing Arts Center announced its Broadway series for the upcoming season on Monday. New this year, the Madden Broadway Series is being named for longtime series subscriber Peggy Madden of Decatur, who is this year's title sponsor. Madden's financial support also is allowing the series to offer singleshow tickets for $24 or a five-show subscription for $70. The five shows are: • "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" (7:30 p.m. Oct. 18). It tells the story of American singer-songwriter

Carole King, who has been active since 1958, initially as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building and later as a solo artist. The show opened Jan. 12, 2014, on Broadway. It won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and two Tony awards. • "Waitress" (8 p.m. Feb. 14), which tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and a rocky marriage. She makes desserts that mirror her life such as "The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie" and "Betrayed By My Eggs Pie." A baking contest and the town's new doctor may offer her a fresh start. • "The Choir of Man" (7:30 p.m. March 4) is a new touring concert show that features a cast of nine who sing a variety of songs, including pub tunes, folk, Broadway and classic rock. • "The Color Purple" (8 p.m. April 10), which is the 2016 Tony Award

winner for Best Musical Revival about a young woman's journey to love and triumph in the American South. • "The Play That Goes Wrong" (7:30 p.m. May 7, 2020), which is an Olivier Award-winning comedy that is a hybrid of "Monty Python" and "Sherlock Holmes." "One thing we wanted to focus on this year was to present shows that had not played Sangamon Auditorium before, and all five of these shows have never been at Sangamon Auditorium, and only 'The Color Purple,' as far as we're aware of, has ever even played Springfield," said UIS Performing Arts Center Director Bryan Rives. Series subscriptions and single tickets are on sale now. Single tickets are $89, $79, $69, $49 and $24. Subscribing to all five performances can save $100 per couple or $50 per person.
