Rolling out the blue carpet

Passport run promotes, protects legacy of Illinois Route 66

By Jill Moon The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — The Main Street of America’s legacy is protected through the collaboration of two great nonprofit forces that make sure Southwest Illinois communities give the best sampling of all that U.S. Route 66 has to offer during this weekend’s “Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road Passport Run.” The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway organization, which serves 90 communities and helps the Blue Carpet Corridor Coalition (involving the southern one-third of Illinois Route 66, including Edwardsville) as it tirelessly plans the Illinois Route 66 passport run Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, known as Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road. The Blue Carpet Corridor Coalition provides free souvenir “passports” to the public to collect stamps at Passport Stops in each community that they visit along Illinois Route 66’s Blue Carpet Corridor during the Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road Passport Run, now in its fifth year. Edwardsville’s Passport Stop this weekend is located at 222 Artisan Bakery, at 222 N. Main St. The new Blue Carpet Corridor Passport for the 2019 tourist season will be revealed this weekend. The free souvenir passport will be available at all participating communities’ official Passport Stops, where visitors can get a unique stamp from each community to complete their souvenir passports. Vandalia St., once known as the CathcartGoddard Tourist Inn and Cabins (it became the Galleria; then Afterword Books’ first location; and then a bakery, but now it’s empty again). “That’s almost all that’s left of Route 66 in Edwardsville,” said Blue Carpet Corridor Coalition President Cheryl Eichar Jett, who has lived in Edwardsville for seven years; is originally from Litchfield, where she lived for 40 years; and, lived twice in Springfield, Illinois, all Route 66 towns. Edwardsville is on the original alignment of Route 66, designated Nov. 11, 1926, as part of the federal numbered highway system, and the route includes Hillsboro Road; Vandalia, St. Louis and West streets; and, St. Louis Road down Sunset Hill and onto Chain of Rocks Road, which is now Illinois State Route 157 through Sunset Hill. She also founded the Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference (the first was held in 2015 at the Wildey) and wrote numerous Madison County focused books, including about Illinois Route 66 and about Edwardsville, published by Arcadia Publishing, based in South Carolina. Additionally, Jett is on the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway board. Another Jett Route 66 project includes a play that she wrote, “Aprons Away: Women’s Work on the Mother Road,” which premiered in October 2018 at Blackburn College, in Carlinville, as part of the fourth annual Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference. Upcoming performances will take place Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at the Eagle Theater in Pontiac, Edwardsville American Legion Post 199 Illinois. BIG BAND

About Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway

The most famous road in the world first came into being in 1926 as part of the new numbered highway system and Chicago is where Route 66 begins. The U.S. Department of Transportation has designated certain U.S. roads as National Scenic Byways because of their special significance to the American people. Route 66 in Illinois received that recognition in 2005. The nonprofit organization has the responsibility for the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway and its mission to “enhance and promote economic opportunities for each Illinois Route 66 community by preserving Illinois Route 66 heritage and by sustaining and increasing heritage and cultural tourism.” Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway serves 90 communities in Illinois; from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge near Madison, in Southwest Illinois. Most of the communities have a population of only 2,500 or less. Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway helps attractions, small businesses and communities take full advantage of their Route 66 resources to provide the best possible experience for visitors from around the world. It also provides information to travelers to help them plan their adventure down Route 66. Whether it is helping a “mom-and-pop” restaurant get new tuck pointing for their restaurant, aiding a small business with one employee in setting up free Google services, or helping a traveler on Route 66 to find the best milkshake in the state, Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway is there to find a solution.

it does for communities and attractions. It allows those communities to get very focused attention by visitors. It’s efficient, in that regard, for all parties.” The Red Carpet Corridor includes communities Joliet to Towanda, where the unofficial “white” corridor begins just north of Bloomington-Normal to Springfield. The Red

For The Edge Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway Executive Director Bill Kelly at the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum. Illinois Route 66 skirted the edge of the village of Glen Carbon and runs through the city of Edwardsville. Glen Carbon can attribute its establishment and early success to both the St. Louis Press Brick Co. and the Madison Coal Corp. The museum has an extensive display of mining artifacts, pictures and a tipple wheel. Carpet Corridor, now approximately 17 years old as an organization, coordinates its communities’ events the first full weekend in May and set the precedent for Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road. “The fact that those communities’ visitors know it’s the first full weekend in May, there’s a lot of return folks — they just have it kind of marked off on their calendars. If someone enjoyed the Italian sausage at the festival, they return, but there’s always something different, even for the Route 66 aficionado, there’s something new — either newly opened or evolved, just like the road continues to evolve.” For example, along the Blue Carpet Corridor, there’s a couple new antique malls and recent significant evolution of the Illinois Coal Museum at Gillespie. This weekend will be the fifth annual Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road event.

ROUTE 66 Continued from Page 2 “The significance of the Blue Carpet Corridor Coalition’s weekend is that it’s efficient for all the communities, attractions and for the visitors, simply because it always will have something that has changed and it’s good to move away from the Route 66 motor tour because it was confining,” Kelly explained to The Edge. “With this weekend’s Blue Carpet event, a couple weeks after the Red Carpet weekend, you can get back out on the road and check out new and familiar stops on the road. It’s intriguing because there’s a lot of folks checking out the communities and they’re focused, because they want their passports stamped, but it’s something you can experience organically — and it’s a good opportunity to eat really good food. “Travelers know about it, can plan for it, and they can look forward to the experience,” Kelly continued. “People just enjoy Route 66 to the south, and there’s lots of specialized events. You kind of pick and choose.” And, that’s exactly who Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway wants to connect with. “The corridor events resonate with fans and the just curious,” Kelly noted. “What we’re really looking for and hoping to establish is that connection with the traveler that’s going

“The corridor events resonate with fans and the just curious,” Kelly noted. “What we’re really looking for and hoping to establish is that connection with the traveler that’s going to bring them back another time, to have a relaxed meal or shopping when not on the driving circuit. The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum resides in this vintage school house, complete with the original hard wood floors and tin ceilings that made this fine building a legacy to the community. In its past, the building has served as a school, WWII scrap metal collection center, blood bank, civil defense building, village administration offices, police station, doctor’s offices, Teen Town, the Reading Room and then library, with a small museum in one room. On August 25, 2014 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Parks Service/ Department of the Interior in Washington D.C., making this building the first of its kind in the village of Glen Carbon.

The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum is well worth the stop when participating in the Miners, Mobsters, and the Mother Road Passport Run. Coal dust is the essence of Illinois Route 66 in most of its communities. Route 66 skirted the edge of the village of Glen Carbon and runs through the city of Edwardsville. The area deserves more attention from the general public and gives a chance to spend a very interesting one-half hour or so reading, talking and learning about what the experience was like in Madison County, Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway Executive Director Bill Kelly said. Former coal mines between Edwardsville and Auburn and in Macoupin County all are worth a visit.

Your Local Favorite For PEST PREVENTION

Over 50 Years The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum’s building once served as a police station. Memorabilia from that era also is on display at the museum.

ROUTE 66 Continued from Page 4 Chatham, Illinois. Prior to Illinois Route 66, Kelly had an extensive marketing career, with IBM for 20 years, served as a vice president of technology for a Springfield company and was involved in a couple start-ups. “It’s a lot of fun (working with Illinois Route 66) and I get to bring all the stuff I’ve

learned in my career and bring it to the most famous road in the world,” he said. “Part of the fascinating thing about Route 66 in Illinois is it’s an evolving process, it follows the Indian Trail, which then evolved into a wagon trail, which evolved into the railroad, then became the national corridor for travel migration, predominantly north to south. Abraham Lincoln spent a lot of time on the circuit, which became Route 66.” See ROUTE 66, Page 7

Most of Illinois 66 still is drivable, motorists use it to commute and it boasts plenty of storefronts. “It’s very much a working road through lots of jurisdictions — state, counties, municipalities, townships. At any point in time you can cross jurisdictions and it just so happens to be the most famous road in the world,” noted Kelly, who often works collaboratively with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). “Illinois 66’s busiest season is also construction and road repair season. IDOT has gotten better coordinating with us, so we minimize disruption. We try and do some advance coordination with IDOT. It’s a constant ebb and flow.” The Federal Highway Administration designated Illinois Route 66 as a scenic byway in 2004. Thus, the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway organization is the nonprofit that operates the byway as designated. “We are the entity that the state, the feds and communities can look to, to get involved in things that take place in the ninety-plus communities up and down the road here in Illinois,” Kelly said. “On Route 66, you have the opportunity to define your own experience on the most famous road in the world.

Actress hopes to open more doors for more Native Americans

BY RAGAN CLARK Associated Press Newcomer Sivan Alyra Rose represents a rarity as one of the few people of Native American descent to star in a Netflix series — or any television series, for that matter. But she hopes her breakthrough in "Chambers" will encourage more opportunities for women like her. "I think 'Chambers' is really (at the forefront of) an important conversation of inclusion and how simple it really can be," said the 19-year-old actress from the San Carlos Apache tribe. The show centers around Sasha Yazzie, who receives a heart transplant and starts having disturbing visions and impulses that lead her on a quest to learn more about her deceased donor. While Rose describes "Chambers" as a supernatural horror show, she says it touches on real-life issues as well. "Real life has its stress. Real life has its scares and real life ... plays into the fantasy world at the same time," she said. The show also explores real-life cultural issues affecting Native Americans, including the use of its mascots and other imagery in

mainstream culture. In one scene, Sasha sees a mural of a Native American on horseback, wearing a feathered headdress and lifting a tomahawk into the air. "I went to a high school that was off a reservation town and there's so much insensitivity in the world. Those kinds of murals, they're everywhere. We have football teams, we have high schools across the country that love to wear war bonnets to their football games on Friday nights," said Rose. "We've got to stop covering up that there's bad things in the world and that there's insensitivity." Rose hopes that the show gives a more realistic representation of Native American culture, calling her character "an Instagram loving, super cute teen girl." "And that's literally everyone else on the (reservation) that I grew up with," said Rose. "That's all I hope they see, too, is like, 'Yeah, she's very normal.' And Native American, the subject, it sounds dark and it's ominous and so big and grand, but ... we're still here and we're nice people." Besides Rose, other Native Americans who are part of the series include executive story editor Jason Gavin, as well as other Native

"It was nice knowing that it didn't start at me, to have to make calls and to make sure everything's right. Yes, I am one of the newer generation Native American actors but I'm not the only one," said Rose. "It was nice knowing that I didn't have to do all the checks and balances. There were people all the way at the beginning." The series also co-stars Uma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn as the donor's parents. Rose praised the pair for welcoming her and treating her as an equal despite her

inexperience. "(They) are so kind and so loving and they made me feel accepted. Even though I'm a beginner and I'm new, they never made me feel like that," she said. Though Rose recognizes that not everyone is a horror lover, she thinks there are pieces of the show that will resonate with all audiences — well, most. "I think 'Chambers' is really for everyone — not kids, though. I wouldn't tell kids to watch 'Chambers.' I'm not going to lie about that," she said with a laugh.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

We wanna be at Wasabi!

EDWARDSVILLE — Even if you don’t like the burn of Wasabi sauce, Wasabi Sushi Bar in Edwardsville has something on the menu you are bound to like. In past visits, I tried various sushi rolls and bento boxes — which are good, for sure — but recently, we sampled some of the appetizers that were previously undiscovered. The stuffed avocado is a spicy tuna-filled avocado, topped with spicy mayo and chili sauce drizzle, but don’t let the word “spicy” scare you off. While it was spicy in that it was tasty and filled with flavor, it wasn’t spicy hot. Shumai are steamed shrimp dumplings that were melt-in-your-mouth delectable, especially when dipped in soy sauce. Wasabi rangoons are house-made crab rangoons, with just the right crunch and plenty of the creamy crab concoction inside. So, what did we have to drink with said appetizers? Drumheller chardonnay from Columbia Valley, Washington, that’s what. It was the perfect choice. There were more chardonnay selections, such as CK Mondavi and Rombauer, and even an unoaked Seaglass, but I knew I wanted an oaky flavor. Other types of wine — merlot, several choices of cabernet sauvignon, and more — are there for the taking, as well. Me? I’ll stick with the Drumheller, which was waiter-recommended. There’s sake, too, if you can take it, as well as soft drinks and teas. The food menu is quite extensive, and will definitely take a few (dozen) trips to exhaust. Hand rolls, classic rolls, chef’s choice maki rolls, signature make rolls — all in a number of flavors and combinations, and the entrees include everything from steak to charashi (fish), eel (yes, eel, if you are up for an exotic adventure), swordsfish, and bento boxes with salmon, shrimp, beef or chicken. Then, there are the noodle dishes, which go the gamut, from thin noodles to thick buckwheat

Craig Ruttle | AP A crowd on the lawn during the Heros of Woodstock concert at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, N.Y. A dispute over whether the Woodstock 50 festival will go on as planned in August has spiraled into a court fight, with organizers suing and at least temporarily silencing former investor, London-based Dentsu Aegis Network, who said that the event was cancelled, citing concern about artists' and attendees' "health and safety."

Woodstock 50 organizers sue investor that backed out

By JENNIFER PELTZ Associated Press

A dispute over the future of the Woodstock 50 festival has spiraled into a court fight, with organizers suing and at least temporarily silencing a former investor that sought to call off the anniversary show. Woodstock 50 organizers are accusing ex-partner Dentsu Aegis Network of verbally and financially sabotaging the big-name event that organizers insist will still unfold Aug. 16-18 in Watkins Glen, New York. Denstu Aegis, meanwhile, has pulled out of the concert and raised concerns about safety. And the two sides are clashing over nearly $18 million that the organizers say their ex-investor withdrew from the festival bank account. "Dentsu's actions have caused a worldwide uproar over its efforts to kill the festival's commemoration of one of the most iconic cultural events of the 20th century," Woodstock 50 LLC's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, wrote in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan this week. The suit seeks the return of the bank account money. Woodstock 50 also wants

Stephen Chernin | AP Gypsy, who attended the 1969 Woodstock Festival, looks at the memorial plaque at the site of the original Festival in Bethel, N.Y. an order barring Dentsu, an international marketing company, from talking about the festival with the media, performers or others. A Manhattan judge on Thursday temporarily granted the gag order, at least until a hearing set for Monday, court records show. There were no immediate responses

to requests for comment sent Thursday to London-based Dentsu Aegis and its Japanese parent, Dentsu. Woodstock 50 and Dentsu's Amplifi Live LLC arm inked a deal in November to produce the anniversary show, planned at Watkins Glen International racetrack.

More than 75 performers have been announced, including Jay-Z, Dead & Company and the Killers as headliners. Others include John Fogerty, Miley Cyrus, Santana, Imagine Dragons, Chance the Rapper and Janelle Monae. Tickets were originally supposed to go on sale late last month, but sales were delayed as organizers said they were working to "refine logistical plans." Behind the scenes, trouble began brewing between the organizers and their chief investor about six weeks ago, according to the lawsuit. It says Dentsu started to slowwalk payments and accused Woodstock 50 of violating their agreement — allegations that the lawsuit denies without detailing. Then, on April 29, Dentsu announced it was canceling the event. "We don't believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees," the company said in a statement at the time. "As difficult as it is, we believe this is the most prudent decision for all parties involved."

'Game of Thrones' is a family affair for Priyanka Chopra

By JOHN CARUCCI Associated Press

Priyanka Chopra finds watching "Game of Thrones" a family affair. Not just because of the huge gatherings she often joins to watch each episode, but because her sister-in-law, Sophie Turner, is "so amazing." "I'm married to a 'Game of Thrones' family, I guess," Chopra said. Turner, who recently married Joe Jonas, plays Sansa Stark on the HBO series. "The last episode, I wasn't in town, but I think everyone else in the family got together, like 50 people, and watched the episode. My husband is a huge, huge fan," Chopra said during an interview while promoting a new campaign to celebrate diversity. Chopra, who has lobbied for more inclusion in the entertainment industry, recently partnered with global skin care brand Obagi as an ambassador for the Skinclusion initiative.

The heart of its mission centers on creating dialogue for inclusion and raising awareness of unconscious bias. That's something Chopra saw first-hand as a young girl growing up in India as the daughter of two physicians. While she grew up comfortably, her parents would provide medical care in smaller, impoverished villages. That provided a glimpse into a different way of life. She recalls not understanding the different set of rules for girls from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and how that treatment was normalized. "I've been told that I can have whatever job I want and be successful at it if I have an aptitude. Whereas these girls were being told that your life has been decided for you," Chopra said. When Chopra came to the United States, she was a victim of bigotry, and that had an impact on her. In high school, she "was called Brownie, Curry, go back on the elephant you came on, and that really affected me

when I was a kid. It affected my self-esteem," Chopra said. But instead of withering, the actress and former Miss World said she was not going to be a victim, and she was going to make sure others didn't feel that way either. Chopra dreams of a better world when she's ready to start a family with her husband, Nick Jonas. "I do want to create a world for my future kids where they don't have to think about diversity, where they're not talking about it because it's normal," Chopra said. While Chopra can't wait to find out what happens in the final episodes of "Game of Thrones," it's bittersweet for her. "I'm so sad it's over, though. The world will mourn," she said with a smile. Rockers sue brewery over its 'Guns 'N' Rosé' beer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The rock band Guns N' Roses is accusing a brewery of piggybacking off their fame to sell beer. The band filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Colorado-based Oskar Blues

Brewery, which sells Guns 'N' Rosé beer and merchandise and bandannas the group says are associated with singer Axl Rose. The complaint says Oskar Blues applied to trademark Guns 'N' Rosé last year and

abandoned the effort after the band objected. The lawsuit says the brewery is still selling the beer and the merchandise. The band wants a court order blocking the brewery from misappropriating its name,

destroying the products and turning over profits and other awards. Oskar Blues marketing director Kyle Ingram did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

‘Long Shot’ is a winner

Sweet chemistry between Theron, Rogen

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist

In the four years since her biggest career role, in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” Charlize Theron has done several Dior perfume ads and other projects that have accentuated what the world already knows: she’s a beautiful, stylish woman who can easily carry a motion picture as its lead star. “Atomic Blonde” proved all of this and “Tully” hardly any of it, but every rule presents best with an exception to back it up. Personally, I found her charm in the new film “Long Shot” to be just shy of devastating. A lot of the credit for this has to go out to her co-star, Seth Rogen, who brings his flapping unflappability to the romantic-comedy genre where I didn’t realize it was missing until just now. He keeps building a solid resume of grounded, “everyman” performances that hew to the whacky side of the persona we all have attributed to him (stoner goofball?) and I watch steadfastly to pull those performances out from the peskier films he’s done (“Sausage Party,” etc.) in between. Theron and Rogen have sweet chemistry together, befuddling all matchmakers everywhere. As far as mismatched romance movies go, “Long Shot” is pretty formulaic. It jumps into its setting a little more quickly than usual

This image released by Lionsgate shows Seth Rogen, left, and Charlize Theron in a scene from “Long Shot.” because the boy-meets-girl aspect started

decades before the plot of “Long Shot” launches. Back before Fred Flarsky (Rogen) was an unemployed journalist, he was a preteen with a crush on his next door neighbor and babysitter, Charlotte Field (Theron). As their lives took different routes, they lost touch. Flarsky became a talented, if not overtly professional, writer of online exposés targeting white supremacy and the alt-right political corridor. Field became even better than promised in her formative years — a successful secretary of state for the current administration (Bob Odenkirk, though he’s not specifically playing Donald J. Trump, the jokes are interchangeable for the Trump administration). She works both sides of the aisle with graceful aplomb. When Field gets wind of an opportunity to run her own campaign for president of the United States, her many advisors (played by actors June Diane Raphael, Ravi Patel and Lisa Kudrow in one brief scene) insist that her electability is only hampered by her own inability to seem human enough to appeal to actual voters. She needs a little more street credibility to match her graceful elegance. Enter Flarsky as a punch-up speechwriter who finds himself a fish out of water, trying to attend dignitary events in a teal tracksuit.

(Philippe Boss|Lionsgate via AP)

But, they click. He convinces Field that being relatable to what real people care about can be just as winning as her pro-environmental agenda. First, she has to hook them in with casual references to “90210,” Blockbuster Video and Boyz II Men (who perform an extended cameo). Then, she can lead the free world. Flarsky gets to spend a lot of time with a “very important person” as they trot the globe. In Stockholm, he’s not much more than a laughing stock in a culturally-outrageous costume. By Berlin, a boyhood crush has returned. In Hanoi, our stars get intimately close during an insurgency. By the time they were slow dancing in a kitchen in Buenos Aires, I was swooning. “It Must Have Been Love” is now on a loop in my brain because this dumb little sex comedy (which is far less raunchy than I’d hoped for) actually turned out to be a tender drama about loving the right person in face of a scrutinizing world. Forget the subplot that put Andy Serkis in an unrecognizable Fox News-esque get-up and the hammy situational comedy trappings of its outer shell. “Long Shot” is a winner. “Long Shot” runs 123 minutes and is rated R for strong sexual content, language throughout, and some drug use. I give this film three stars out of four.

Makers of 'Journey' feel vindicated as sequel nears By MICHAEL CIDONI LENNOX Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 2017 family movie "A Dog's Purpose" was marred by accusations of animal abuse after a video of a frightened dog that appeared to be forced into rushing water during the making of the film was posted by TMZ. The footage quickly went viral but a third-party investigation discounted the allegations. On Thursday, one of the writers reflected on the allegations at the premiere of the film's sequel, "A Dog's Journey." "Nothing happened," said Cathryn Michon, a co-screenwriter on both "Purpose" and the follow-up. However, she continued: "I think that some good things came from it because we now had two animal-welfare agencies on the set and I think that's the kind of safeguards that films need." American Humane has said its investigation showed no dogs were harmed but acknowledged the dog was in distress and production staff should have realized that earlier. Dennis Quaid, the star of both movies, said: "I think we were really vindicated in that." He also criticized the animal rights group PETA, which lodged the original complaint. "That was PETA that was coming forward, and they, and it was somebody who was not a crew member who showed up on a closed set, took a little bit of video and then edited the video to make it look like a dog was being abused where there was no dog being

abused," Quaid said. Lisa Lange, a PETA vice president, told The Associated Press in a statement Friday "no amount of spin can change the fact that an animal was terrorized while filming a scene for which computer-generated imagery could easily have been used instead." Both films are based on W. Bruce Cameron's best-selling series of books, which propose that dogs may have short physical lives but continue their journeys through reincarnation. Cameron was on the sets of both films and said no dogs were harmed. "(There were) very few people on the set who can call, 'Cut,'" he explained. "And one of them was the people that were there to protect the animals. That was the most important thing. There was signage. It was stressed at every meeting and everybody understood what we were there to do." Dennis Quaid, left, a cast member in the upcoming film "A Dog's Journey," attends to his dog as the film's director Gail Mancuso looks on during the Universal Pictures presentation at CinemaCon 2019, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The 2018 family hit “A Dog’s Purpose” was marred by accusations of animal abuse after a video of a frightened dog that appeared to be forced into rushing water during the making of the film was posted by TMZ. Mister Rogers' home state plans day of kindness in his honor HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Residents of Fred Rogers' home state of Pennsylvania will be encouraged to exhibit acts of kindness in honor of the beloved PBS children's show host. Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday said the state's website will share stories of good deeds and kind gestures May 23 for "1-4-3 Day," named for Mister Rogers' favorite number. Rogers used the number 143 to say "I love you," as each digit reflects the number of letters in each word in the phrase. May 23 is the 143rd day of the year. The Fred Rogers Trail highlights locations in his hometown of Latrobe and in Pittsburgh, where "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" was produced. The show aired from 1968 to 2001. Rogers, an ordained minister, is buried at Latrobe Presbyterian Church. He died in 2003 at age 74.

Alongside mainstays, fresh faces try to stand out

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer

Mati Diop only realized long after her Dakar-set "Atlantics" had been selected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival that she had made history. Diop, the 36-yearold French-born filmmaker of Senegalese heritage, is the first black woman in competition for Cannes' top honor, the Palme d'Or. The 72nd Cannes Film Festival, which opened Tuesday, will feature a lot of familiar faces who have long made Cannes their home, including Pedro Almodóvar, Ken Loach and Jim Jarmusch, whose zombie comedy "The Dead Don't Die" will open the festival and mark the director's ninth time in competition in Cannes. But Cannes is also where a new cinematic voice can be catapulted onto cinema's world stage. Diop, who has made a number of acclaimed shorts and who starred in Claire Denis' "35 Shots of Rum," will make her feature film debut in Cannes. She's one of four female directors in the festival's 21-film main slate, which ties the previous high. "I've been through all kinds of different emotions from the announcement until now," said Diop by phone in Paris where

This image released by Paramount Pictures shows Taron Egerton as Elton John in a scene from "Rocketman," which will be shown during the Cannes Film Festival. (David Appleby/ Paramount Pictures via AP) she was busy putting the finishing touches on "Atlantics." ''But it's very stimulating for me to be part of this specific edition that is remarkable for its novelty. It's a selection in which there are more women, in which there are first feature films, where Africa is represented.

"This gives me the feeling of being part of some new excitement," she added. "In a way, it's a turning point for the festival." Whether this year's edition of Cannes will indeed open a new chapter in the prestigious 72-year history of the French Riviera festival remains to be seen. Certainly, the tremors of last year's Cannes — where 82 women protested gender inequality on the redcarpeted steps of the Palais des Festivals — are still being felt. One of the primary figures of that demonstration was Agnes Varda, the French New Wave pioneer who died in March at 90. As a tribute, this year's official Cannes poster is a picture of Varda shooting her first feature, 1955's "La Pointe Courte," peering through a raised camera while standing on the back of a man. Whether Cannes has done enough to adjust to the #MeToo era is sure to be a prominent subject throughout the festival. This year's selection committee, for the first time, was half women. Still, some have criticized the festival's selections — about 25 percent directed by women, in total — as a slight and unconvincing improvement. (By comparison, women directed 40 percent of the Berlin Film Festival's selections, and 46 percent of those at Sundance.) "In the time that Agnès Varda started, it was hard for women to be directors," Thierry Fremaux, artistic director of Cannes, told IndieWire. "More and more, it's not easy, but it's easier. We have more female directors in films schools, in universities, and in the industry. It's logical that at a film festival like Cannes, we have had more women over time, because we have paid more attention." Tradition and progress are always in tension at Cannes. For the second straight

year, this year's in-competition selections will feature no Netflix releases. Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" was last year set to premiere at Cannes before French distributors — aiming to preserve the country's theatrical window — pushed the festival to require that all films up for the Palme d'Or have a release planned in French theaters. Netflix withdrew its films , including "Roma." (This year, the streamer does have one movie, "Wounds," in the parallel section Directors' Fortnight.) Netflix could still be a presence at Cannes' film market, the world's largest. Amazon Studios, which has released its films first in theaters, will have the first streaming series to debut at Cannes. The first two episodes of Nicolas Winding Refn's 10-part crime drama "Too Old to Die Young" will premiere at the festival. But some things never change. Tom Bernard, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, will, as he's done for decades, be frantically riding a bicycle racing from one screening to the next in search for the specialty distributor's next acquisition — and, hopefully, a seat. "There's always discovery," said Bernard. Sony Pictures Classics has two films in competition: Almodóvar's "Pain and Glory" and Ira Sachs' "Frankie." Bernard believes that while the streamers may be deeper pocketed, those pledging a theatrical release can offer a different kind of prominence. This year's Cannes, where Alejandro Iñárritu will preside over the jury that will decide the Palme d'Or, has some of the Hollywood glitz that has perhaps gone wanting in recent years. Twenty five years after "Pulp Fiction" won the Palme d'Or, Quentin Tarantino will be back on the Croisette with his 1969 Los Angeles saga "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. The Elton John biopic "Rocketman" will splash down. "The Dead Don't Die" will bring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Adam Driver back to Cannes. Other Cannes regulars include the Dardennes brothers ("The Young Ahmed"), Xavier Dolan ("Matthias and Maxime") and Terrence Malick ("A Hidden Life"), the notoriously press-shy filmmaker whose last Cannes entry, "The Tree of Life," won the Palme d'Or in 2011. But part of this year's excitement is in the new faces. Among those in competition for the first time are Mali-born Ladj Ly's "Les Misérables" and China's Diao Yinan ("The Wild Goose Lake"). In Cannes' Un Certain Regard sidebar, American filmmakers Danielle Lessovitz ("Port Authority"), Annie Silverstein ("Bull") and Michael Covino ("The Climb") will all be screening features for the first time in Cannes.

Rihanna to launch new fashion label

By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer Rihanna certified her status as a cultural fashion icon with her groundbreaking new deal with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world's largest luxury group. The pop star, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, announced Friday that she will debut a line called Fenty this spring through LVMH. Her luxury house will be based in Paris. The 31-year-old singer becomes the first person since 1987 to launch a new house with LVMH (the last person was Christian LaCroix). Rihanna is also reportedly the first woman to create an original brand at LVMH and the first woman of color at the top of an LVMH maison. "Designing a line like this with LVMH is an incredibly special moment for us," Rihanna said in a statement. She added that Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of LVMH, "has given me a unique opportunity to develop a fashion house

in the luxury sector, with no artistic limits. I couldn't imagine a better partner both creatively and business-wise, and I'm ready for the world to see what we have built together." LVMH's leather and goods division includes Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior Couture, Celine, Kenzo, Givenchy, Fendi, Marc Jacobs and more, while its wine and spirts includes Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon. Arnault said "everybody knows Rihanna as a wonderful singer, but through our partnership at Fenty Beauty, I discovered a true entrepreneur, a real CEO and a terrific leader." "She naturally finds her full place within LVMH," he continued. "I am proud that LVMH is leading this venture and wish it will be a great success." Fashion has been synonymous with Rihanna's name since the Grammywinning superstar launched her music career in 2005. She has collaborated with brands like Armani, Puma, Dior and more to launch products and lines, and she debuted her lingerie line, Savage

X Fenty, last year. Her Fenty Beauty collection disrupted the beauty industry when it launched in 2017, offering 40 foundation shades and bringing in more than $500 million by the end of last year. The success of it forced other cosmetic brands to be more inclusive and launch more foundation color shades, while Fenty even extended to 50 shades. A release date for Rihanna's new Fenty line with LVMH was not announced, but a website where consumers can eventually purchase the line launched Friday. The new line "is centered on Rihanna, developed by her, and takes shape with her vision in terms of ready to wear, shoes and accessories, including commerciality and communication of the brand," according to a press release. Rihanna, a native of Barbados, expressed her excitement about the deal in an Instagram post. "Big day for the culture," she wrote. "Thank you Mr. Arnault for believing in this little girl from the left side of an island, and for giving me the opportunity."
