Nonprofit furniture resale shop grows exponentially through volunteerism

Restore Décor helps in-need community, organizations in need

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — As its resale furniture shop has grown quickly through love and compassion, many unlikely connections occurred to shape the nonprofit outreach Restore Décor, which its founder and executive director succinctly described as God’s hand. “It’s different than the usual resale shop, all the furniture items are donated,” said Restore Décor founder and Executive Director Dana Adams, of Edwardsville, who works full time at the Illinois State Police (ISP) forensic crime lab. “When I thought of something like Restore Décor, I thought it would be a great thing to do when I retired. But, God just

opened the doors and I’m walking through them.” At Restore Décor’s workshop, located at 223 N. Main St., in Edwardsville, dedicated volunteers paint old, unwanted donated furniture, as well as repair, recycle, upcycle and repurpose the pieces. Walk-in volunteer paint-andrestore hours are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays; 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays; and, from 12 to 2 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, when volunteers take the reinvented furniture a few blocks to Restore Décor’s retail store, at 111 N. Second St. On Friday nights, volunteers arrange the store and at the end of the night, photos are taken of the week’s newly designed pieces and posted to Restore Décor’s Facebook page.

Items are for sale when they open on Saturday morning, and items sell quickly as part of The Land of Goshen Community Market. On Saturday mornings, both of Restore Décor’s stores (at 111 N. Second Street and 223 N. Adams founded the 100% volunteeroperated nonprofit outreach organization in 2013. She lives in Edwardsville with her husband and daughter, Emilee, 18, who will attend the University of Southern Indiana this fall, majoring in biology and pre-dentistry; their son, Justin, 24, is an engineer in Dallas, Texas.

shop every Friday night, hang pictures, place furniture, some clean our bathroom and some do our accounting. ” Restore Décor volunteer Mark “Mr. Fix-It” Zuke, of Glen Carbon, a retired BJC hospital computer specialist, masterfully makes the little kids’ kitchens — these start with a twodrawer bedside table — and made a deluxe, painted and electrified dollhouse, which was auctioned for a Restore Décor cause. He volunteers from six to more than 25 hours a

week, depending on what donations come in and the season. “I mostly tighten things up, fix wobbly chairs, make drawers slide better,” said Zuke, whose wife, Jan, bakes and coordinates cookie-making. More than three years ago, when Zuke retired, the couple started volunteering with Restore Décor after shopping at its store and donating furniture. Since then, the nonprofit created a repair shop for Zuke at its workshop. He also credits volunteers Rick Macho and Pat Podstawa for the collective work the trio does. “You don’t have to be a member of a church or a particular religious belief to help people,” he said. “I’m inspired by the good-

For The Edge ness of people and people who want to do good things.” Even though Restore Décor has a strong core group of volunteers, it can always use more. Anyone — from all walks of life and nearly all ages — can show up during volunteer painting hours at its Main Street workshop. Restore Décor also makes its own chalk paint, which covers all kinds of surfaces without much elbow grease prior to use. Just wear old clothes because the paint doesn’t wash out, Adams said. Younger kids, with an adult’s guidance, can easily learn to paint furniture at Restore Décor, too. People of faith and non-religious people can volunteer and all are welcomed warmly and gratefully. There’s even volunteers who make cookies

and do many other tasks besides painting. Adams, who has worked for ISP for 29 years and is a mother of two, first thought of the idea for Restore Décor when she helped work on a Habitat for Humanity house; now, Restore Décor is the main fundraising arm of Faith Coalition, founded in 2011 by Edwardsville resident Joe Russo. Russo worked alongside Edwardsville resident Greg Erspamer doing disaster relief in Joplin, Missouri, after a tornado devastated the town the same year that he founded his nonprofit organization. “They discussed how great it would be if they could send out one message to all the

churches, to get everyone working together, have one monthly meeting, share and brainstorm ways to help the community,” Adams recounted. The idea worked out and the first meeting was at the Edwardsville Public Library, where the group decided to voluntarily remodel a local house that had been donated to Habitat For Humanity, which was the loosely organized group’s first project, for which Adams volunteered. Four years later, when the 100% volunteer-constructed house was done, the group sold it at market value, funding three Habitat For Humanity houses that were built and given to families in need. “I loved the concept of Faith Coalition and our local churches working together. God laid upon my heart the idea for Restore Décor, but it was still to come together,” recalled Adams, who joined Faith Coalition as a member in 2012. “Once we opened, Restore Décor provided another way for people in our community to come together by donating, upcycling and selling furniture. We were able to use funds from Restore Décor to purchase HVAC, siding, windows and material for the Habitat For Humanity house. We realized the phenomenon of community-driven organization.” Once the Habitat for Humanity house remodel was completed, they started sharing proceeds from Restore Décor with families in need and other local nonprofits directly serving those in need. Restore Décor expanded upon the idea of local churches working together. “It all started with Faith Coalition and carried over to churches, schools, YMCA Summer Camp, all three Rotarys in Edwardsville and many, many other local groups,” Adams noted. By this time, social media had become the primary way to send a message to a large audience beyond community word-of-mouth. Today, Restore Décor’s Facebook page has nearly 12,000 followers and is in its seventh season with Edwardsville’s The Land of Goshen Community Market. Restore Décor started there as an outdoor space in the summer of 2013. By November that year, Restore Décor occupied its own dedicated brick-and-mortar space on Second Street, thanks to Edwardsville’s Newsong Fellowship, a nondenominational church, where Adams and her family attend. “Before Restore Décor started, I shared the idea with Pastor Dave Romoser at Newsong Fellowship Church,” Adams recalled. “He encouraged me to follow God’s direction and generously offered to donate space in their church for this new ministry.” At the time, Newsong’s chapel space, located at N. Second Street, was being used as a meeting space for several 12-step groups in Edwardsville. Restore Décor shared the space with the groups for a while. Then, Newsong generously relocated them to another space in the church. “Although Pastor Dave insisted on donating the space, we offered to tithe ten percent of our proceeds to help cover rent and utilities,” Adams said. “The first year we were open, we were able to donate $10,000 to Newsong. This was just further affirmation that God’s hand is in this ministry. He has confined to bless Restore Décor and Newsong’s faithfulness to ministering to our community.” Visit Restore Décor’s Facebook page, email restoredecoredwardsville@gmail. com or call Adams at 618-980-2018 for more information.

Home staging knack lends an eye to retail store’s merchandising

EDWARDSVILLE — Home decor retailer Chris Beard discovered her knack for interior design when she began home staging in the late 1990s. Home staging prepares a private residence for sale in the real estate marketplace. The general goal of staging is to make a house appealing to the highest number of potential buyers, thereby selling a property more swiftly. Beard adds an aesthetic that helps buyers picture interior spaces that they potentially will call home. Gingham Buffalo recently staged a home in one of Edwardsville’s newest subdivisions, Hawthorne Hills, which holds weekend open houses. “We do both new construction as well as resale homes,” Beard noted. “It really gives the buyer a good idea of what they can do with a space.” Staging techniques focus on improving a property’s appeal by transforming it into a welcoming, attractive product that anyone might want, she explained. Beard uses artwork, accessories, lamps, greenery and furniture to stage the home, most of which she also sells at her Edwardsville store The Gingham Buffalo, at 500 N. Main St. Properly executed staging leads the eye to attractive features, while also down-playing the not so favorable ones, she said. Some home buyers purchase the items Beard uses in home staging. Customers usually request the main floor — kitchen, dining room, living room — or a room that may not be an obvious use of space, she said. Home staging can show buyers that things such as an outdated counter top can still work with current decor. Beard started staging houses in 1997 for Jill Moon|Metro East House Hunters a local builder. Her quest to find the perfect Left to right, The Gingham Buffalo’s retail manager Brandy Gaddis, owner Chris Beard and Jordan Wesley, a nursing student at Southern Illinois furnishings and the positive response from the public eventually led to the opening of the University Edwardsville stand at Gingham Buffalo’s wrap desk. store. Beard established The Gingham Buffalo in 2013 and has many styles of decor, including modern and children’s decor. They also carry decorative Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, artwork, jewelry, accessories and Barr Co bath and body soaps and lotions. The store also sells sofas, dining sets and other large furniture pieces and provides outside design services. Due to growth, The Gingham Buffalo moved to Main Street in 2015 from its first location on Center Grove Road, to a building twice the size and with basement storage. Outdoor kitchens keep evolving

By MELISSA RAYWORTH Associated Press Since the basic backyard barbecue began evolving into the outdoor kitchen, the trend has only grown. Some of today's outdoor cooking areas can seem almost like full kitchens, with more appliances and food prep space. Even walls, ceilings and TVs. "It's not just where you prepare the food. It's where people gather," says HGTV's Vern Yip. "Just as the kitchens inside of our homes are kind of the center of energy at a party or gathering, the outdoor kitchen really has become that as well." This trend "used to be limited to the upper end of the market," Yip says. But today "even the middle portion of the market is embracing it." Josu Gaubeka, founder and design director at La Cuisine Appliances, based in Miami, agrees: At all price ranges, he sees homeowners doing more outdoor cooking throughout the year. One goal is better health — you're not frying with oil if you're outside grilling, or even using an outdoor oven, Gaubeka notes. We've asked Yip, Gaubeka and New Yorkbased designer Brett Beldock for advice on what's trending in outdoor kitchens, and how you can create one even on a relatively modest budget.

PREP SPACE

Many homeowners begin by installing "a small island made of concrete or synthetic material," says Gaubeka. These are usually built around a grill and offer counter space for food prep, plus the option of adding other conveniences. Among the most popular: a small outdoor sink that's hooked up to the outdoor water system by hose, and a small refrigerator. Having these basics outside cuts down on trips into the house during cooking and entertaining. Prices vary widely: "You can buy all those elements for $1,200 if you'd like," Gaubeka says. Or you could spend $1,200 or more on the grill alone. For those considering a larger investment, Yip points out that a built-in outdoor kitchen adds monetary value to a home.

BEYOND THE GRILL

Another trend Gaubeka sees at a range of

costs: adding a brick pizza oven or gas-fired pizza oven that can be used for much more than pizzas. "You can bake outside or you can actually sear a thick piece of meat," he says. While indoor ovens generally reach 550 degrees Fahrenheit, outdoor pizza ovens can reach 700 or 800. Beldock says a fire pit can also be a fun place to cook "anything from s'mores to hamburgers."

WALLS AND CEILING

To make a backyard cooking area feel even more like a kitchen, Yip recommends covering it with something more permanent than a canopy. "A permanent roof structure is a much better way to go because it allows you to use that room during more times of the year," he says. "It also helps protect your investment." Beldock suggests adding a tile backsplash along the exterior wall when installing a built-in cooking area. Use materials that can withstand the weather. Choose tiles that have either a fireglazed or a cement finish, she says. Beldock has also done outdoor wallpaper that's printed on "the film that you put on cars or buses," she says; it's weather-resistant and great for the wall behind an outdoor sink.

GROWING YOUR GROCERIES

Many people already grow some herbs on an indoor windowsill. An outdoor kitchen is a great place to expand on that, says Beldock. Add planters or pots for basics like parsley, fennel, basil and tomatoes, she says. Plant some thyme to use in recipes and enjoy the beauty of purple flowers that sprout on top.

GOING FURTHER?

Wall-mounted televisions are also popular for outdoor entertaining areas, though they must be outdoor-rated and protected from the elements. Many people also install ice makers, and on the luxury end, Beldock sees some clients adding dishwashers and even trash compactors. "Everyone loves the idea of being able to hang out outside," Yip says. "We've really moved toward a grilling, outdoor entertaining, casual culture."

This photo provided by Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet features the company's hybrid fire gas grill, refrigerated drawers and 24" double cooktop cabinet in an outdoor space at a home in Chicago, Ill., available from La Cuisine Appliances. As the popularity of outdoor kitchens grows, homeowners are adding outdoor ovens or heating drawer and refrigerators around their grills to prepare entire meals outside without accessing their indoor kitchen. Fab Four still changing the world, even in a film about forgetting them By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist I finally caught up to “Yesterday,” a highconcept new film from yester-week that I had skipped to get into an earlier screening of the Spider-Man sequel. What was I thinking? What I found was a humorous and very smart picture that gives us a glimpse into a world that looks much like ours, but with some glaring differences. Writer Richard Curtis and director Danny Boyle — a partnership I have dreamed of since the trailer hit theaters last winter — absolutely nailed a dramatic take on the idea of, “What happens if everyone forgets The Beatles, except for one man?” It’s also a lovely, light romance between the two lead characters and hilariously funny. Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is fed up with trying to make his music career happen. He plays dive bars in Suffolk, England, and poorly attended spots at festivals. He wants to be a rock star, but the only real fan he has is his crush/manager, Ellie (Lily James, a vision here as she must truly be everywhere). Jack’s just a bloke with an acoustic guitar and some simple arrangements that are good, without being memorable. All that changes on his last night of mediocrity. Biking home after THE set that finally

Getty Images broke his spirit, Jack is hit by a bus and suffers some nasty injuries, including an oral catastrophe with his front teeth. The accident happened in a freak blackout when all electricity in the world failed for 12 seconds, with no explanation — and no explanation ever comes either. Instead, we piece together, along with Jack, how exactly this mysterious event transforms his world. In a particularly memorable scene, Jack plays the ubiquitous “Yesterday” for his friends (including Rocky, a burnout roadie, played by British actor Joel Fry) to come to the realization that in this post-blackout time, The Beatles don’t exist, never did.

No “Abbey Road” album cover, no “Penny Lane,” no Yoko (thankfully, in my opinion) or Mark Chapman (again, thankfully). Absurd, right? Also, no “Let it Be” or “Hey Jude” or “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Now, you’re feeling a little down aren’t you? And, so was I. But, here, Jack sees an opportunity and he takes the songs we all know by heart and makes them his own. While impressing with Beatles music (that no one remembers, thinking it’s Jack’s) at the bars, he finds a recording engineer, Gavin (Alexander Arnold), for some demos. Ellie’s thrilled that he’s finally finding some success that really comes to a head when Ed Sheeran (spectacularly playing a sad-sack version of himself) hears Jack on television and offers him an opening-act gig. From there, a label stooge (Kate McKinnon, conniving and fantastic) and the internet make Jack a superstar, on a rocket trajectory no less. Will fame and money change Jack? Will it fragment his already fragile romance with Ellie? Can he keep up the charade of being the world’s greatest singer-songwriter? Yes, to all, which without those questions, there would be no plot. But, it’s never with malice that Jack perpetrates his fraud, especially in the uproarious

moment when he can’t remember the lyrics to “Eleanor Rigby.” The blackout mystery erases other things from pop culture, too — most notably Coca-Cola. These other Easter eggs will be fun to find out for yourself when you go see this nice movie. I cherish a film that offers nothing more than an easy good time at the old multiplex, and “Yesterday” checks off that box like a champion. Yet, it also got me thinking, about some lines toward the end, when Jack comes to find that maybe he’s not the only one who remembers the Fab Four. No other musical act resonates with people like The Beatles. Despite the successes of Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen and Elton John and Queen (See my tie-in to recent box office history, here?), they don’t come close in their ability for this movie to be about none other than John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Maybe the Rolling Stones come closest (still rocking!), but those four lads from Liverpool changed the world and in this movie they change it again. ”Yesterday” runs 116 minutes and is rated PG-13 for suggestive content and language. I give this film three stars out of four.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Cupcake wars!

Decisions are hard when you are faced with rows and rows of cupcakes, each one prettier than the next. Or maybe the last one was prettier. No … maybe that one in the back. See what I mean? It’s hard. The Cup in Edwardsville has quite the selection. There are featured flavors, seasonal specials, monthly specials, limited editions and even gluten-free and vegan. As we walked in, there was a special drawing going on that day. My prize: Buy three, get the fourth one free. So, I definitely had to pick four. That made it a little easier than when I was thinking I had to only pick one. My selections were “Snow White,” with vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream, and “Cuppa Coffee Cake,” which was sour cream coffee cake with cinnamon streusel topping. Both tasted just how they sound, and were moist and delicious. Also, quite large. My husband chose “Cookies ‘N’ Cream,” with rich cocoa cake, cookies ‘n’ cream buttercream and gluten-free Joe-Joe’s cookie

crumbles, and “Summer Crush,” an orange cake with orange buttercream filling. I like making cupcakes, but the problem is, even though mine may taste good, I could never make them look as beautiful as The Cup’s. OK, The Cup’s probably taste better, too, but the artistry is every bit as important. On the side, I had a cold brew. Served like a soft drink in a cup with a straw, the coffee flavor was rich and tasty. In addition to the company’s mainstay cupcakes, 9-inch cakes are available in choices, like, carrot, pumpkin and strawberry. The Cup also does weddings. I’ve been to several weddings in recent years, where traditional wedding cakes are either not there at all, or they are not the only choice. Cupcakes can make it easier. You have a ton of selections, they are easier to serve (no need for cutting) and cupcake trees look so pretty! I’m not advocating that people stop having

FOOD Continued from Page 26 wedding cakes altogether, but the emergence of wedding cupcakes has definitely made things more interesting. And, The Cup will do a top tier with roses, flowers or bows that can be used for a traditional bride-and-groom cake cutting. Classic cupcakes, like “Confetti,” with vanilla buttercream, French vanilla cake and multi-color sprinkles; “Tuxedo,” with vanilla buttercream, dark chocolate cake and mini Oreo cookie; or, “Red Velvet,” with cream cheese frosting, red velvet cake, red velvet crumbles and chocolate straws would keep me happy as a wedding guest! Or, you can build your own with your favorite ingredients. You can even rent The Cup Tiny Truck for corporate and private events, to have all your favorite treats fresh and on hand as a sweet addition to the party. And, if your puppy is feeling left out, try the dog biscuits or “Pupcakes.” Now how adorable is that? For more information about The Cup, visit cravethecup.com.

Sally Field, 'Sesame Street' to receive Kennedy award

By ASHRAF KHALIL Associated Press Actress Sally Field and the long-running children's TV show "Sesame Street" are in the latest class of Kennedy Center Honors recipients. Others chosen to receive the award for lifetime achievement in the arts include singer Linda Ronstadt, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the musical group Earth, Wind and Fire. The recipients will be honored during a gala ceremony in early December. For the third straight year, the attendance of President Donald Trump seems likely to be a subject of speculation in advance of the event. Trump has skipped the past two celebrations. The first time , multiple recipients threatened to boycott the event if he attended. The Kennedy Center's president, Deborah Rutter, said it was too early to tell whether Trump or first lady Melania Trump would attend. "They are always invited," she said. "He is the president of the United States of America, and it would be good to have these extraordinary individuals acknowledged by the president." Field, 72, was a television star at age 19 and went on to forge a distinguished career that included two Academy Awards and three Emmys. She starred last year in a Netflix

miniseries called "Maniac." "Sesame Street" debuted in 1969 and remains a force in children's educational television. The show now airs new episodes on HBO, and they are rebroadcast months later on the show's original home, PBS. In recent years, the creators have worked to embrace more modern issues, introducing a puppet named Julia with autism. The co-founders of "Sesame Street," Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, will accept the award on behalf of the show. Ronstadt was one of the faces of American music in the 1970s and 80s, landing on the cover of Time magazine in 1977. Her fourdecade career moved smoothly between country, pop and rock with occasional deviations into Mexican folk songs. In 2011, she announced her retirement from singing, citing the advancing effects of Parkinson's disease. Earth, Wind and Fire was originally formed in Chicago by lead singer Maurice White. The group drew elements from rhythm and blues, funk, and disco in a flashy crowd-pleasing mix that spawned eight No. 1 hits. Songs such as "September" and "Shining Star" remain in heavy rotation for both radio station programmers and wedding DJs. Maurice White died in 2016, but his brother Verdine, the group's longtime bassist, said he was proud of how their songs have become part of the soundtrack of American music.

‘Game of Thrones’ reigns with record 32 Emmy nominations By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer

HBO's "Game of Thrones" has slashed its way to a record-setting 32 Emmy nominations for its eighth and final season, leading HBO back to dominance over Netflix, the streaming service that bumped it last year from atop the increasingly crowded television heap. The bloodthirsty saga's total eclipsed the all-time series record of 27 nods earned by "NYPD Blue" in 1994. If "Game of Thrones" successfully defends it best drama series title and claims a fourth trophy, it will join the quartet of mosthonored dramas that includes "Hill Street Blues," ''L.A. Law," ''The West Wing" and "Mad Men." The Emmy voters' acclaim stands in sharp contrast to fan reaction to the show's last hurrah, which included howls of laughter for a to-go coffee cup inadvertently included in one scene and a finale that detractors called unsatisfying. But the show's ratings never faltered for the series based on George R.R. Martin's novels, setting new highs for HBO. A wealth of recognition for the cast and guest stars , including the show's only previous winner, Peter Dinklage with three awards, helped "Game of Thrones" add to its already record haul of nominations, now at 161 total. Series star Emilia Clarke's decision to seek a best actress nomination after a series of supporting actress bids paid off. She's competing in a category that's notable for its diversity, including past winner Viola Davis for "How to Get Away with Murder" and repeat nominee Sandra Oh for "Killing Eve," who has another chance to become the first actress of Asian descent to win the trophy. She

lost last year to Claire Foy for Netflix's "The Crown." Two actors of color, Billy Porter for "Pose" and previous winner Sterling K. Brown for "This Is Us," earned drama series nods. The rest of the drama series field includes "Better Call Saul," ''Bodyguard," ''Killing Eve," ''Ozark," ''Pose," ''Succession" and, as the only network entry, "This is Us." Mandy Moore, who plays the NBC drama's matriarch, earned her first best actress nod, with fellow cast member Chris Sullivan earning his first nod, for supporting actor. Last year's best comedy series, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," led the comedy pack with 20 bids, including for its star and defending champion Rachel Brosnahan. "I'm at the dog park this morning with my fur children and started getting a lot of texts and phone calls all at once. I'm so excited to learn that the 'Maisel' family has been invited back to the party. This category is ridiculous. I can't believe I get to be a part of anything with these amazing women," Brosnahan told The Associated Press . She'll vie with Emmy record-holder Julia Louis-Dreyfus of "Veep," who didn't compete in last year's awards because her breast cancer treatment delayed production of the political satire. Louis-Dreyfus, who with Cloris Leachman shares the record for most Emmys won by a performer, eight, has a shot at solo glory if she wins again. The final season of "Veep" received nine nominations, including a best supporting actress bid for Anna Chlumsky. "I'm feeling really jazzed. It might be the coffee I just had. But this feels so much sweeter because it's the last time around for this show," she said.

David Crosby opens up in new documentary 'Remember My Name'

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer David Crosby has turned down no fewer than four biopics about his life. None of them captured the scope of his turbulent life. But he said yes when director A.J. Eaton proposed a documentary. At 77, in relatively poor health yet creating some of the best music of his career, Crosby was ready to talk. And a chance run-in with Cameron Crowe, who has known Crosby since the director was a teenager, meant they also had the perfect person to ask the questions. The film, "David Crosby: Remember My Name," opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday and is expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. It's a disarmingly revealing portrait of the "guy in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young who's never had a hit" (his words). He talks candidly about falling out with his band, his unhealthy relationship with Joni Mitchell, his "two or three" heart attacks, learning how to be a rock star from The Beatles, his disdain for Jim Morrison ("a dork"), his addictions, the untimely death of a girlfriend and how his wife Jan loves him "in ways that I didn't love myself." And it wasn't easy going to those uncomfortable places, but it was the only way Crosby and the filmmakers would have it. "There were definitely times when I said, 'You can't put that in the film,'" Crosby said. "And they'd go, 'Yeah, sure Dave.' But we did the best we could do to get you some idea of how I got to here." Crowe said it was an honor to "be the guy to interview him when he was ready to tell his life story." They first met in 1973 or 1974 when Crowe got an assignment to write about Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. "Crosby had no idea who I was writing for, didn't care. I was just a guy who had a lot of questions and he had all the time in the world for me," Crowe said. "He answered every question." They kept in touch over the years, too, and Crowe always worried each time he saw him that it might be the last. "It's deeply ironic that he's at his most sparkling now when he's probably his least healthy," Crowe said. "But he wants to communicate and tell us that 'time is the final currency.'" It doesn't mean filming was a breeze, though. One day when production went to visit the famed Laurel Canyon Country Store, he said Crosby was particularly cranky. They captured his mood in the film as he gruffly

This image released by Sony Pictures Classics shows musician David Crosby in a scene from the documentary "David Crosby: Remember My Name." (Sony Pictures Classics via AP) rejects romanticizing the store or even the area — it was just a place to get away from the smog, Crosby said. "But then he goes and sits down outside of the Country Store and what does he say? 'I was a bad lover. I let down all these women in my life.' And I'm like well SOMETHING about the Country Store seems to be speaking to you. He went as deep as he'd gone at that point," Crowe said. "But he wanted nothing to do with my metaphor of 'What did you come to this store for?' He's like, 'for groceries, what are you talking about?'" And while Crosby never refused to answer any question, Crowe believes there's still a necessary mystery around him. "That last smirk he has is kind of a rosebud moment," Crowe said. "And I still don't know what he's thinking there." Crosby knows he's in a unique position to have reached this creative apex at this stage in his life. He's currently touring for "Sky Trails," his third original album in less than five years. "Normally people's lives don't go this way, to have a sudden resurgence at the end of a career," Crosby said. "I'm going against the flow here. I'm definitely a salmon that's running upstream, there isn't any question. But why it's happening to me to such an extreme degree and at such a late time? I can't explain it."

He just likes making music and has found collaborators he likes working with. But he thinks sometimes about why his older material continues to resonate ("it was a hopeful time and we're in very dark times right now"). Also, legacy is on his mind lately not just because of the documentary. Crosby is planning to file litigation over master recordings that were lost in the Universal vault fire in 2008, which has only just come to light recently. "They had a laid out, contractual, written obligation to protect those tapes," Crosby said. "So you can count on a lawsuit." But mostly he's thinking about the future of music and is keenly aware discouraging it must be for young musicians starting out in a business that is stacked against them. "Kids coming up can't make a goddamn living because they can't make money off of records," Crosby said. "Art is already suffering because of it... The problem with the pop music is that it's shallow. It doesn't go anywhere, it doesn't take you anywhere." And as for whether or not he'd eventually allow someone to give him the "Rocketman" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" treatment? Definitely. "But I don't think you can do it half-assed," he said.
