The home that heritage built

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — The Rathert Farm started with 104 acres on Bluff Road but still boasts 67 acres thanks to the dedication of its heir and his wife. Chuck Rathert’s great grandfather, Christ Rathert, settled in Edwardsville, Illinois, in the mid1850s from Germany. He happened to marry the girl next door, Mary Brockmeier, whose father, Heinrich Brockmeier, had a lot of land along Bluff Road, where Brockmeier Sod Farms still exists today, just north of the centennial Rathert Farm. The Brockmeier patriarch had several children, among whom he divided his land. Mary got 104 acres, of which Chuck and Debbie Rathert own 67 acres today. “One of Mary’s brother’s family is still next door, and down the road is another Brockmeier farm,” Chuck noted.

Though farming eventually stopped, the land, utilized differently, lives on with lush landscaping, six garden areas, a babbling brook, koi pond, a renovated farmhouse, where the Ratherts have lived since 1975, and an in-ground swimming pool. Seven outbuildings stand, all but the garage is original to nearly Christ Rathert’s time. The “big” farmhouse, where the Ratherts live, was built in 1900 for $2,000. But, the “old” house is where the Ratherts believe that Christ and Mary lived, its footprint but a fraction of the big house. Debbie uses the old house mostly for storage, but it still is the original structure, built in approximately 1869. The big house qualified as an Illinois Centennial Farm through a program that honors generations of farmers who have worked to maintain family farms in the state. A state-approved sign marks this Rathert milestone. Chuck’s grandfather, Charles Rathert, built the big house that he lived in with his wife,

Minnie. “Christ and Mary moved to the historic Leclaire neighborhood, but Charles and Minnie continued to live here,” Chuck recalled. Chuck’s father, Ray Rathert (19152004), lived in the house upstairs while his sister, Velma Willis, 99, also lived there; she now lives in O’Fallon, Missouri. Ray, who retired from Shell Oil Refinery in Wood River, met his wife, Norma, in Australia, while serving in World War II, as a cartographer for the U.S. Army. She came to live at the Rathert Farm with her in-laws while her husband continued to serve overseas. Chuck was born to the couple in 1952. He met his wife Debbie at Edwardsville High School, from where they graduated in 1970 and 1971, respectively. They moved into the house the same year that they married, which had then most recently been rented to a family with five children. “The renters kept the original See HOME, Page 8

Continued from Page 7 woodwork. To me, it’s a miracle it never was painted,” Debbie noted. When they first moved in, the house had carpet throughout, which was popular at the time. One day, Debbie started pulling up carpet, saw old linoleum and finally got to the original hardwood floors. But it wasn’t easy. Before she went to work for the day, she threw down a wet bath towel to soften the material build-up. “I scraped black tar and all kinds of stuff,” recalled Debbie, who graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1975 with a bachelor’s in medical technology; she worked for St. Joseph’s in Alton from 1975 to 1986 and then at St. Louis’ Christian Hospital until she retired as the lab director in 2013. The Ratherts finished the family room floor themselves, then started on the kitchen floor, which they got down to the bare wood then hired a company to sand and stain it. For the living room, they hired a company to do it all. “It’s soft wood. When I had a party at Christmas, there were high heel marks from guests, but it’s OK because it’s the character of the house,” Debbie said. “Velma says grandma Minnie would just love what we have here now.” Chuck recalled that heading north on Bluff Road, it was lined with farms to New Poag Road. Most of the farms were bought out when SIUE put in a four-lane highway in 1965. Nearby the Ratherts,’ behind St. Paul United Church of Christ, lies St. Paul Cemetery, where Chuck’s ancestors are buried. Debbie said that Chuck’s dad told them the Rathert Farm wasn’t affected by the highway because of the St. Paul Cemetery. When Chuck’s dad returned in 1946 from World

War II, Chuck’s grandfather’s health was failing and his dad didn’t have the desire to farm. Just south of a giant ash tree, there was a chicken house and a fence with grapes for wine-making and, by the road, a garden from which Chuck’s grandmother would can the vegetables. A small pig barn to the north was built in the 1860s, which still stands, and on the other side of it was a concrete slab for pig farming. A big barn was built in 1901 for $1,000. It’s still standing and held milk cows and work animals in either end. The family also stored grain and corn. And, on the property, an original smoke house and a granary still stand. When Chuck was a kid, his dad took down the chicken house. “I know what it was like to stand on the fence and see pigs here. Every year they butchered pigs,” Chuck recalled. “I like to tell people I don’t know anyone with deeper roots than I have here. My ancestors were totally self-sustaining. When the crops were good, they were self-sustaining; when crops were bad, life was hard.” “This was all just dusty, sandy and clay when we moved in. We couldn’t get grass to grow,” said Debbie, while pointing to their beautifully landscaped backyard. So, the couple found hardy, but lush, plants to fill in where grass wouldn’t grow within a perimeter of three hard maple trees and the giant ash tree. “We put in a path and some landscaping,” said Debbie of a portion of the oneacre lot that encompasses the yard in the front and back of their house; one-half of that acre now includes a swimming pool. “We still struggled with getting grass to grow so, where the sun and shade meet, we took landscaping out to there. We gave up trying to grow grass.” The pool is a more recent addition. The Ratherts did the majority of the outside work from 1988 to 2004.

Before adding the pool, they put in a stream and a koi pond, which is three feet at its deepest, allowing the koi to overwinter in the pond. “We had a friend with koi and we talked and talked to him about it. Finally, he said, ‘Just stop talking and start digging,’” Debbie recounted. “That’s what we did. We did it all ourselves. We had a commitment to try to retain the character of this house. “We didn’t see our involvement in gardening; it deepened with a vegetable garden. After the kids were born, we got more serious. We put it in according to a friend’s drawing and that got us started.” Chuck became the “lawn guy” and Debbie became the gardener. “It keeps us out of each other’s way,” Chuck joked. Another house was built in 1948, two doors south of the Rathert family home, where the couple’s son and youngest child, Joe Rathert, lives with his wife, Meg, and their two children. And in the house between the family house and Joe’s, their oldest daughter, Katie Kosten, lived with her three children. Their middle child, Annie Frey, who has three children, followed in her father’s footsteps, which isn’t farming. Chuck graduated from SIUE in 1974 with a bachelor’s in mass communications and then spent the next 40 years in radio. First for WOKZ, which became WBGZ, known as the “Big Z,” in Alton; then from 1979 to 1992, he worked at WRTH/KEZK. When KEZK changed formats, Chuck became the program director for KFUO AM from 1993 until he retired in 2011. The Ratherts’ daughter now works for KFTK 97.1 FM with her own show, “The Annie Frey Show,” from 12 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the talk radio station. Katie is an assistant professor at the SIU School of Dental Medicine, in Alton, and Joe is an attorney at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. Inc. in St. Louis.

New women’s giving group makes huge impact right out of the gate By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — A grassroots movement that started here with a few women grew to nearly 300 members in a matter of days. The national movement came to be community based in the Metro East by way of 100+ Women Who Care from the 618, founded by Denise Arendell, with help from friend Sarah Rankin, who recently held the group’s first quarterly Impact Award Meeting two weeks ago at The Wildey Theatre. The new women’s collective giving group raised more than $26,000 the night of its first meeting. How did they do it, you ask? Very efficiently. “It’s a simple concept with a big impact,” said Arendell, who discovered the nationwide 100 Who Care Alliance when a friend mentioned it to her while she was on vacation in Arizona; now she and Rankin are co-directors of the local group. The 100 Who Care Alliance started in 2006 by Karen Dunigan, who died a few years later. Yet, her legacy lives on through the expansion of 100+ chapters throughout the world,

totalling more than 900 chapters, either fully operational (650), including the 618 area code-based chapter, or under development (more than 250). These include women’s, men’s, people, kids’ and teens’chapters.

“I’d never heard of this,” Arendell noted. “I found just about every city in Arizona had a chapter. I texted close friends that I was going to look into this as soon as I got back. I asked Sarah to co-direct with me. She graciously

agreed, but had no idea what she was going to get herself into!” Arendell designed the logo for 100+ Women Who Care from the 618 and then launched its Facebook page at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon, starting with a handful

of Facebook followers. “Our hopes were to have 100 committed members by the second quarterly meeting. Within the first few hours after our Facebook launch, we had 100 followers; by Saturday, we had 200; then, on

Sunday we had 300, and it just exploded from there” Arendell recalled. The 100+ Women Who Care from the 618’s Facebook page acquired 1,500 followers in two months and has more See WOMEN, Page 16

than 300 committed members today. “This wildly exceeded all of our expectations,” Rankin said. “I think there are two reason why. First, the community in which we live, is a very, very special place and people want to give back; secondly, people are busy and this is an incredible way to take a hundred dollars and multiply it in a short amount of time.” The concept behind 100+ Women Who Care from the 618 is that women become committed members by agreeing to give $100 and one hour of their time, four times a year. The members meet quarterly for one hour to learn about vetted nonprofit agencies doing the hard work in the communities of the area code 618. At the quarterly Impact Award Meeting, committed members have the opportunity to nominate a nonprofit for the monetary Impact Award. Three nominating members are then chosen randomly to speak for up to five minutes on a nonprofit that speaks to their heart. Committed members at the meeting then vote, and the organization with the most votes becomes the Impact Award recipient. During that same meeting, after the recipient

is announced, committed members individually write a check for $100, directly to the winning organization, to ensure that 100% of those donations

are given directly to the nonprofit. The process is repeated at the next quarterly Impact Award Meeting. By the time the first quarterly meeting started at 6:30 p.m., 285 women were signed up as committed members of the group, meaning that if all members fulfill their commitment, at least $28,500 would be awarded to the

recipient nonprofit. At that meeting, the three women randomly chosen were speaking on behalf of Edwardsville’s Main Street Community Center, Cornerstone Farms and RISE Law Institute Inc., and each explained how their organization, if selected, would use the money from the Impact Award.

As a result of that first meeting held July 25, Main Street Community Center was selected to receive the group’s first Impact Award. At least $28,500 is slated to be given to Main Street approximately three weeks after that quarterly meeting. See WOMEN, Page 18

“We are in the process of collecting checks for Main Street from those committed members unable to attend the meeting,” Arendell explained to All About. “After word got out about the meeting at the Wildey, we had fifty more women join as committed members.” “It’s astonishing,” Rankin said during a conference call with All About. “We were also blown away with the number of nominations we received. Over fifty women nominated over forty-five different nonprofits.” Visitors are welcome to attend the quarterly meetings, and will be handed a guest badge to wear at the meeting. All members who committed to 100+ Women Who Care from the 618 at the first meeting became founding members. The designation is stated on their member badges, worn at meetings. “They are truly honored to have that designation,” Rankin said. “We brought the idea to the 618, but our success is due to our committed members. They are amazing, just amazing.” While Main Street will receive the Impact Award, the other two organizations didn’t walk away empty handed. The law firm of Simmons Hanly Conroy donated $2,000 apiece to Cornerstone Farms and RISE Institute. The firm also announced it will sponsor the cost of the venue for the next quarterly Impact Award meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Check 100+ Women Who Care from the 618’s Facebook page or their website for the location of the next meeting. “What Simmons Hanly Conroy has stepped forward to do, is pretty amazing and it sets a precedent for other local businesses to get involved,” Arendell said. “We’re really looking forward to them sponsoring our next meeting.”

Founder Denise Arendell of 100+ Women Who Care from the 618 designed the group’s logo.

Rankin was equally thrilled about the turnout and result of 100+ Women Who Care from the 618’s first meeting. “I’m completely overwhelmed by the reaction and by the fact that so many people have turned out and made commitments to this organization,” Rankin said. “We’re going to make a really big difference in our community. Our first meeting is a real testament to the community we in which we live in. “We had such an overwhelming response from women who attended the meeting, expressing how grateful they

were to have an avenue to give.” The group continues to grow. “We are seeing exactly what we thought would happen, with corporate sponsors, matching grants, venue sponsorships,”Arendell said. “This is phenomenal and exactly what our hearts told us would happen.” Even national nonprofits can be considered for an Impact Award if it agrees to earmark the funds for the 618 communities, Arendell explained. “Another valuable aspect to the group is what we learn,” she noted. “Being in the audience, whether you get to speak or not, you learn something about three

nonprofits you may not have known.” The next three quarterly impact meetings for 100+ Women Who Care from the 618 are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22; Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020; and, Tuesday, April 28, 2020. Edwardsville business owner launching EXO Lounge, Nail Bar

Offers a new experience of the senses, flagship opening in November The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — “I want to create an escape, somewhere people can go and be pampered in an environment built around the senses. This is the place where men and women can meet, relax and leave feeling like they’ve been to a special place.” It is the beginning of every conversation that EXO founder Gina Gamblin inevitably has with people asking her, “What’s going on with that building?” EXO is a cocktail lounge and nail bar in one building and due to launch this November. And, there is nothing ordinary about EXPO going in at 2 157 Centre in Edwardsville, Illinois. The building is divided into two sections, which work in unison. Upon entering the lounge, one will notice the lighting, and signature scents, which cater to the senses. Beverages on offer will include seasonal organic cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine and coffee. The nail bar will offer manicures, pedicures, eyelash extensions and waxing and an atmosphere built around service and fun. “I want the people of Edwardsville to enjoy the experience of being treated as if they are royalty,” said Gamblin, as she continued to explain that some things need to be experienced before they can be appreciated. EXO Industries has been a project in the works for the past 24 months. The location is for anyone who wants to experience something new, fun and extraordinary. “EXO really is about keeping life interesting and providing a place where men and women can meet, have an organic beverage, be pampered, relax and, ultimately, leave feeling happier than what they were when they entered,” Gamblin said. “The city of Edwardsville has been so supportive and loyal, and I love my local community. It makes perfect sense that this is where our flagship location will reside.” Sustainability and social responsibility is another area where EXO opted to seek out the very best of industry practices.

EXO Nail Bar is the first and only location in Edwardsville to fit each station with a ventilation system that will reduce the impact of harsh chemicals and fumes given off by nail polish. This commitment by the EXO team offers a safer environment for staff and customers. EXO Lounge and Nail Bar is distinguished by its philosophy that fun, efficient, convenient service, coupled with a focus on overall health and well-being, will generate buzz in the community. It is a social setting and a lifestyle choice. The vision is simple. “You won’t have to travel to cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles or New York to find an experience like EXO,” Gamblin noted. “Edwardsville will be the first to experience a theme that is fresh and unique. It is a truly special feeling to share this vision with friends, family and colleagues from a community that means so much to me.” EXO Industries is a brand of lifestyle services. The company currently consists of EXO Lounge, a unique cocktail lounge that serves organic, healthy cocktails and EXO Nail Bar, a full-service nail bar dedicated to consistently providing high customer satisfaction by rendering excellent service, quality organic products and furnishing an enjoyable atmosphere that appeals to the senses. For further information, contact Gina Gamblin, EXO Industries at 618-6929696 and visitexo.com.

For The Edge EXO Lounge & Nail Bar is set to open this November at 2 157 Centre in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

the guys golf a time or two, or maybe a few of us decide to do a little shopping. Most everyone hits the beach for a large part of each day. When evening comes, we all converge on whichever house the evening’s cook is bunking. This year, there were 26 of us, including one baby and one toddler. Each family (or couple) takes a turn at rustling up dinner for the whole crew. Yes, it’s a huge undertaking, and pretty much consumes that day. But, the wonderful thing is, other than that one day, you are kind of footloose and fancy free. Someone else is responsible for yours and

everyone else’s dinner on the other nights. The hardest part is figuring out how much you need for that number of people. You don’t want to run out. You don’t want a whole lot of leftovers, because the next day the family on kitchen duty needs the space in the fridge. Here’s what we did: First thing in the morning, you have to do your grocery shopping. Sometimes, that

involves visiting seafood markets, too. Maybe a liquor store, because groceries there only sell wine and beer. Appetizers and drinks start at 6:30 p.m. We decided to have “Lemon Drop Martinis,” which you will have to find a recipe that suits you for that one. The one we tried was too strong, and it took some “messing with” before we got one that everyone seemed to like. In the end, I’m not quite sure what the combination was. My husband was bartending. The appetizer was French bread with dipping oil. We

sliced four loaves, baked them on a cookie sheet for a couple of minutes on each side, until they felt a little bit firm. Then I put two kinds of olive oil in small plates and one larger one, and sprinkled “Julie’s Everything Seasoning” and some sea salt on top. People could either spoon some over their bread or take a small plate for dipping. This was a big hit. For the main course, we made Italian stuffed shells, and that was really hard to determine quantity. I used large baking tins, and I almost made four, but since I filled them so deep, I only made three, and though everyone seemed to come back for seconds, we still had some left over. I basically doubled the recipe below for each tin, so each one had two pounds (plus) of meat. We had a six-layer salad, which is one head of lettuce; a half of an onion, chopped; a cup of Parmesan cheese, layered. Then on top, put a cup of mayonnaise, and on top of that put a half a cup of sugar, then a pound of bacon, crumbled, on top of that. Cover it and put in the refrigerator for a few hours. Then stir very well, just before serving. I used to put a half a head of cauliflower after the lettuce to make a seven-layer salad, but some family members said they didn’t like the cauliflower, so I left it out. A couple of others said they missed the cauliflower. You can’t please everyone. I took that basic recipe times four to feed my crowd. For dessert, my sister helped me make a fresh

On the Edge of the Weekend peach cobbler with traditional pie crust — in my mom’s cobbler dish, which I took cross country with me. This is something that is meaningful for all of us, because it always seemed to taste better in that dish. I know, we are weird. Of course, we had to make an extra tin of cobbler to go along with that to make sure everyone got a taste. And there you have it. A big dinner for a mob. I have to say; it all went over well. To set it off, we had our “Beach Dinner” playlist, and our “Beach After-Dinner” playlist, when dancing ensued on the porch. Then we were able to breathe a sigh of relief. Our night was over, and for the rest of the week, we were dinner guests. Not a bad gig. Italian Stuffed Shells 1 pound ground beef 1 cup chopped onion 1 garlic clove, minced 2 cups hot water 1 can (12-ounce) tomato paste 2 beef bouillon cubes 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 24 jumbo pasta shells, cooked and drained Brown ground beef, onion and garlic over medium heat. Drain. Stir in water, tomato paste bouillon and oregano. Reduce heat, simmer, uncovered for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, combine egg, 1 cup mozzarella and the Parmesan cheese. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray pan. Arrange shells in a layer. Pour some of the beef mixture over top. Layer some of the cheese mixture over top. Repeat the three layers until pan is filled. Cover and bake for 30 minutes. For last 5 minutes, remove cover and allow top cheese to melt and brown slightly. In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at
