Midwest Salute to the Arts’ pleasing palette Nationally recognized fine arts festival in 31st year

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS — The all-volunteer Midwest Salute to the Arts, with an all-new festival grounds layout in its 31st year, transforms Everette Moody Park into an outdoor fine arts gallery, abuzz with activities and entertainment for all ages. “Since 1988, when the art festival started here, we’ve expanded a lot from featuring artists to having something in which we can give back,” said Midwest Salute to the Arts Director Sharon Kassing; Midwest Salute to the Arts won 2018’s Best of Southwest Illinois in the category of local event/festival. The new festival layout provides an oasis in the green space and newly renovated pavilions at Everette Moody Park. Kassing began working with the juried fine art show and festival in 1999, when she started as a volunteer in the Children’s Creation Station. “My friend and I loved the festival and decided to go ahead and volunteer,” she recalled to The Edge. “That’s what started it all for me. I met so many people. Lots of friends and family still volunteer and it’s a way to really connect with people.” Over the years, the Midwest Salute to the Arts Council of volunteers has watched as young artists, whose love of art began in the festival’s Children’s Gallery and Creation Station, have grown into loyal patrons and now bring their own children to introduce them to art and its appreciation. More than 300 Chris Abigt, of Ottumwa, Iowa, 2018 Midwest Salute To The Arts Council Choice Award winner, stands beside the award-winning piece “Secret Garden,” oil on canvas, which is this year’s Midwest Salute To The Arts Council signature piece used in all of its advertising. volunteers make Midwest Salute to the Arts happen and helped to make the festival a favorite among artists. This year’s 31st Midwest Salute to the Arts takes place from Friday, Aug. 23, through Sunday, Aug. 25, at Moody Park, on Longacre Drive, in Fairview Heights, Illinois, which is celebrating its 50thanniversary this year. “The city is so supportive we couldn’t put on this event without them,” Kassing said. During the fair and festival, Everette Moody Park becomes the weekend home for award-winning artists, musicians, culinary artists and nonprofits. In see ARTS, Page 5

Youngsters enjoy thousands of bubbles from The Bubble Bus, which will be at the Midwest Salute to the Arts festival from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m., both Saturday, Aug. 24 & Sunday, Aug. 25. (For The Edge) Kiara Linda, mixed media (For The Edge)

The gallery offers kids-only shopping, where kids can buy art without mom or dad nudging them toward something they like, only at the Midwest Salute to the Arts Children’s Gallery. The Children’s Gallery was designed to foster an interest in art at an early age. Children ages 5 through 13 enter the gallery and choose a piece of art, free from parental influence. After the child has selected a piece, they are encouraged to visit the artist who created their piece to find out how it was created. The cost to enter the gallery is $10. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25; it will be open until all art has been disbursed. Children’s Creation Station This year’s projects include: • Paper plate butterflies • Crazy duct-tape foam hats • Crazy little finger puppets • Dream catchers • Tissue water colors • Build a Spine Project, brought to the festival by Chiro One Wellness Center, O’Fallon, Illinois. • Yard checkers and Connect 4 games, brought to the festival by Renewal by Andersen, Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Cop/Uber driver buddy comedy delivers some laughs By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

It’s hard to call “Stuber” America’s newest comedy hit. Rather, it’s a comedy. And, it’s in theaters. You should go see it if you like action comedies. O, R-rated, blood-splattered comedies. It’s cut from the same cloth as “Lethal Weapon,” but probably skews a lot closer to the “21 Jump Street” features that came out a few years ago. There’s also a weird vibe that flows through the two lead actors — both of whom raise the level of this production by their sheer willingness to go for broke at every turn — wherein they have characteristics that don’t fit in the stock mold

of what we’re expecting their characters to be. I guess that’s pretty entertaining, too, for a movie about a cop recovering from LASIK eye surgery who hires a pent-up Uber driver to get him to a drug bust. Mountain-size tough cop Vic Manning (Dave Bautista, actor and former wrestler famous for playing tough guys without much to say) has been told to take a few days off while his main case is kicked upstairs for federal investigation. He uses the opportunity to finally have corrective eye surgery that may have prevented his last partner (Karen Gillan) from getting killed in the line of duty. But, while he’s waiting for his peepers to clear, a break

see STUBER, Page 9

On the Edge of the Weekend

STUBER

Continued from Page 8 happens and his informants tell him the deal is going down that same night. Go get ‘em, Vic! But, he can’t see his hand in front of his face and before you know it, his old Chevy’s in a ditch. Yet, he’s got the Uber app on his phone. His daughter, Nicole (Natalie Morales), made sure of that because he has to get to her big art show that same night. Vic wants to be a good dad, but clearly his relationship with his grown daughter has been run off the rails over the years because he’s always doing things like skipping important art shows to go take down drug dealers in a junkyard at 1 a,m. Enter Stu (Kumail Nanjiani), a smug, slightly nerdy rideshare driver who picks up fares after working 9 to 5 at a sporting goods store for a lame boss (Jimmy Tatro). Stu needs the five-star ratings and the extra bucks because he’s trying to launch his own business with the girl of his dreams (Betty Gilpin), who has him mired in the “friend zone” except during devastating breakups when they become friends with benefits. Of course, that would happen on the same day

Dave Bautista, left, and Kumail Nanjiani laugh as they arrive at the L.A. premiere of “Stuber” at the Regal LA Live. (Photo by Willy Sanjuan/Invision/AP|For The Edge)

Vic hails Stu’s electric car for help in a running gun battle throughout greater Los Angeles. Gilpin, in the role as a drunk, needy girl, steals her scenes. Did I expect Nanjiani to be hilarious and full of dry wit charm? Absolutely, I did, and he sure delivers. I didn’t expect him to be

quite so angry or pervy, but maybe that’s why I enjoyed this movie as I did. The comedy is thick with tropes, but the characters constantly do the opposite of what you’de expect, though sometimes the moves are still dumb, especially in a crime comedy. Vic drags Stu from an antiques mall

to a male stripper revue, shows him to a veterinarian that can stitch up gunshot wounds, robs his store for guns and ammo, and generally relies on him as he would a partner cop. When his lieutenant (Mira Sorvino, where has she been?) turns out to be a mole within the department, Stu gets his moment to shine as an actual cavalry coming to the rescue. The whole thing is dumb, but the bigger the action scenes become, the funnier Stu’s humor is in them. He keeps a pretty good patter of one-liners going with Vic and that should be what good partners do. Bautista is funnier/better as Drax the Destroyer in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and Nanjiani’s best work to date is his semi-autobiographical film “The Big Sick,” an Oscar nominee from 2017. He can also be heard as the voice of Pawny, an annoying animated alien character in the current sequel “Men in Black: International.” I had the good fortune to see that flick at the charming Sky View Drive-In in Litchfield, Illinois, this summer. Sci-fi and comedy are both best done under a starry sky. “Stuber” runs 93 minutes and is rated R for violence and language throughout, some sexual references, and brief graphic nudity. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Catrinas Cookin’ Up Storm!

Catrinas’ décor encourages a festive mood, with the room overseen by “La Calavera Catrina,” aka “Dapper Skeleton” or “Elegant Skull,” which are skeletons all dressed up, inspired by etchings by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada, and reminiscent of “Day of the Dead” celebrations. There are many choices around the area to sample Mexican fare, and Catrinas has just Vicki Bennington become one of my go-tos. It’s a little different than many Mexican establishments, in that it describes its offerings as “contemporary” Mexican. Each dish has a bit of a unique twist on traditional Mexican cuisine, but some of the choices are what one might find coming from an authentic Mexican kitchen.

Taco Pollo platter (Vicki Bennington, For The Edge)

I have to say, everything we ordered seemed … fresh; very fresh. We started with guacamole that came with flour chips and corn chips that were dusted with various spices. The flour version tasted almost like a pita chip and

went perfectly with the guac that definitely had its own twist — topped with pistachio nuts. The “Taco Pollo” is a platter with two tacos of grilled chicken with Chihuahua cheese and pineapple pico de gallo (that added a touch of sweetness), lettuce, drizzled with creamy Valentina sauce. This could easily feed two people. The platters come with beans and rice, Mexican beans, “Elote” side salad or chicharrones (fried pork rinds). There are also salmon tacos with a special guajillo sauce, blackened tilapia tacos with cilantro and cranberries, tostaditas with sweet potatoes and choice of grilled pork, chicken or sirloin, carne asada tacos with grilled beef brisket topped with grilled asparagus and smokey honey chili sauce! And, that’s not all. Pineapple shrimp, Baja fish and cauliflower are See CATRINAS, Page 12

Alice Cooper lives up to the legend

On the Edge of the Weekend

• Thursday, August 15, 2019 • 13

By Keith Brake Contributing columnist For The Edge

ST. LOUIS — Legendary rocker Alice Cooper brought his amazing stage show to the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater, delivering a show for the ages. “Alice” can only be classified accordingly in the music industry — a true American music treasure. He specializes in shock-value performance and theatrics, for decades, but now has a cult following, of sorts. Fans proved their Alice allegience when he took the St. Louis stage July 25. Multigenerations came to see Alice — many parents brought their kids. Alice’s absolutely oneof-a-kind show kicked off the his first set with hit song “Feed My Frankenstein” and the almost sold-out crowd went crazy! Accompanied by “Frankie,” the giant monster character ducked on and off the stage throughout the opening number as Alice and his band-of-all-stars almost instantly captivated the audience. One hit followed another, made up of some of the most amazing show props and antics a fan could imagine, featuring, but not limited to, a zombie nurse who “beheads” Alice and an 8-foot tall baby. The band who plays with Alice is absolutely top notch, featuring three guitarists and a rock-solid rhythm section combined with Alice’s stage-performance mastery, making for an experience that one can’t forget. Alice has been a mainstream icon since the mid-1970s and seems as if he could continue for many more years, based upon his current tour. If you get a chance to see this incredible event, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so — it will be a night you talk about for some time to come. Alice’s openers, Motionless In White and Halestorm, arrived on point. Motionless In White hit the stage, first out of the gate, with a full-throttle set. The crowd filed in as these boys appeared on stage, but that didn’t slow the guys down one bit. Having Motionless In White on the bill rounded out a comprehensive musical array of styles, encompassing metal, rock and rock opera-type of performance. Adorned with heavy makeup on their faces, Motionless In White delivered a solid opening set that would have made

any metalhead proud. The growing audience, not yet at its peak, showed Motionless In White plenty of love and the night was off and running, without a hitch. Next, Halestorm took the stage. Siblings Elizabeth “Lzzy” and Arejay Hale have been making their rounds in this mainstream rock act since they were considered children. From what I saw, they are only getting better. Lzzy has a voice that I would categorize as a solid mix of Joan Jett and Melissa Etheridge, which she delivers with as much soul as Janis Joplin. Lzzy’s little brother handles the drumming duties with an unbelievable amount of charisma, showcasing stick flips and other theatrics. Halestorm has enjoyed much radio-play success over the last several years and their set was sprinkled with one hit song after another. I fully expect the next time that Lzzy makes her way out on tour, she, her bother and the boys in the band will be headlining the show rather than playing support. Lzzy told the rambunctious crowd a story about getting made fun of as a child, because she liked Alice Cooper, and how proud she was to be opening for one of her childhood idols.

DIVERSE EXHIBITS AT SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM ST. LOUIS — The Saint Louis Art Museum’s exhibition, “Paul Gauguin: The Art of Invention,” features an exceptional display of 90 paintings, wood carvings, ceramics, prints and writings that showcase Gauguin’s fascination with experimentation in various media. Gauguin created his own multi-faceted artistic style, much like he crafted his own distinctive path through life. His style evolved over time. In painting, he is most recognized for his experimental use of color and flattening of space and forms, an approach that was distinctly different from that seen in his earlier Impressionist-period paintings. His inventiveness transcended painting and print-making, in the works he created in ceramics and in wood. The ticketed exhibit, open now through Sunday, Sept. 15, is grounded in a prodigious loan of 55 works by Gauguin, from the distinguished collection of Copenhagen’s Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (art museum). The works in the Saint Louis Art Museum’s exhibition will take visitors on a journey through Gauguin’s artistic output ignited by the people and cultures he encountered on his global travels, from early Impressionist paintings to iconic works from Brittany and Tahiti to fascinating three-dimensional objects. Presented alongside the Glyptotek works are pieces from the Saint Louis Art Museum’s collection, including Polynesian sculptures and Peruvian ceramics. An extremely rare manuscript hand-written by Gauguin himself helps give insight into the thoughts of the artist. The manuscript, “Modern Thought and Catholicism,” was a gift to the museum in 1948 from film star and St. Louis native Vincent Price. The exhibition is curated by Saint Louis Art Museum’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Simon Kelly, with research assistant Abigail Yoder. Call 314-721-0072 or visit slam.org for more information.

curated by Genevieve Cortinovis, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts and Design; Hannah Klemm, assistant curator of modern and contemporary art; and Eric Lutz, associate curator of prints, drawings and photographs; with Molly Moog, research assistant. The Saint Louis Art Museum is one of the nation’s leading comprehensive art museums with collections that include works of art of exceptional quality from virtually every culture and time period. Areas of notable depth include Oceanic art, pre-Columbian art, ancient Chinese bronzes and European and American art of the late 19th and 20th centuries, with particular strength in 20th-century German art. Admission to the Saint Louis Art Museum is free to all every day.

offering a new spot for friends and family to gather and enjoy the community. Currently focused on top-fermented European lagers with an American twist, Clancy’s Brewery also plans to brew classic American styles and Belgian ales. “The city is excited about Clancy’s location in downtown Granite,” Granite City Mayor Ed Hagnauer said. “You can enjoy specialty craft brewing, places to eat and a movie. Clancy’s Brewery will be a great addition to creating a vibrant downtown district.” “It was the vision of the Mayor and the city council

Clancy’s Brewery having grand opening

GRANITE CITY — The coming Clancy’s Brewery will brew nearly 100 gallons at a time, and have the freedom to experiment and try new things. Clancy’s Brewery will have a grand opening from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1312 Niedringhaus Ave., in Granite City, Illinois, featuring live music, snacks and beer. Located down the sidewalk from Lascelles on Niedringhaus Avenue, Clancy’s Brewery is bringing the exploding craft beer scene to Granite City, while also

about ten years ago that placed the cinema as an anchor to the downtown area,” said Rosemarie Brown, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce of Southwestern Madison County. “ And what we have seen since then, is the Lascelles Group’s investments that have created slow layers of growth, stimulating interest in different people. Lascelles Group, along with others in the area, are building our business community, and we as residents need to be there to support each of these businesses day after day.”

There are a number of beers currently on tap at Clancy’s that are sure to please the beer enthusiast, such as Lemondrop Pils, a dry-hopped Pilsner made with lemondrop hops and fresh lemon zest. It’s a refreshing beer with a citrusy and hoppy character. Also on tap is The End is Rye, an American pale ale, brewed with classic American hops and rye for a hop-forward taste with a strong malt backbone and touch of rye spiciness. The next beer to brew on the brewmaster’s list is Granite Mammal, a classic European-style Vienna lager

that is amber in color with a malty taste and smooth finish. “Our city is a small town with a big heart,” Clancy’s Brewery founder Lance Callis said. “If you fall, you can count on your fellow citizen to pick you up. Granite City is a city of immigrants, and Clancy’s Brewery is part of that. It is my hope that this microbrewery will add more joy to our town, keeping God, our families and our country as our guidelines.” For more information about Clancy’s Brewery, visit their Facebook page for weekly posts, updates and specials.

Broadcasting legend Bob Jenkins announcing at INDYCAR Bommarito Automotive Group 500

By Mark Robinson For The Edge

MADISON — The annual NTT IndyCar Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, at World Wide Technology Raceway (formerly Gateway International Raceway and Gateway Motorsports Park) in Madison, Illinois. While the event in itself is thrilling, the new man-behind-the-mic will make it that much more special. His voice has been synonymous with calling the action at racing events across the country for 40 years. Now, Bob Jenkins is bringing his familiar and welcome tone to World Wide Technology Raceway. Jenkins has joined the public address team for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline the weekend involving the NTT IndyCar Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series and more. “I’m really looking forward to being

there and I know it’s going to be a great weekend,” Jenkins said. Starting for what was then the fledgling ESPN in late 1979, calling a U.S. Auto Club Sprint Car race at Salem Speedway in southern Indiana, Jenkins got in on the ground floor of televised race play-byplay. Along the way, he covered sprint and midget races for ESPN’s famed “Thunder” series, off-road and drag racing and predominantly NASCAR, when he formed a legendary trio with Bennie Parsons and Ned Jarrett. But being from Indianapolis, Jenkins’ heart has always been with “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indy 500. “Open-wheel has always been my thing,” Jenkins said. “I’ve been fortunate to be able to work at Indy in some capacity, either in radio or public address. I haven’t missed a 500 since 1966. Fortunately, I was able to end my career (as a TV commentator) with what was then Versus, which is now NBCSN, doing my favorite kind of motorsports.” Now officially retired, Jenkins still

works on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway public address team for the Indy 500 and NASCAR Brickyard 400. Chris Blair, executive vice president and general manager at World Wide Technology Raceway, is keenly aware of Jenkins’ legacy and the affinity race fans have for him, so he asked Jenkins to join the WWTR p.a. team this year. “Since St. Louis is relatively close and it’s an interesting racetrack, I said, ‘Sure,’” Jenkins recalled. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s always been a fun racetrack and they do a lot of promotion and have a great crowd. I’m really excited about helping them out.” Jenkins still follows the NTT IndyCar Series closely, but admitted he’ll be studying up on the other series racing this weekend to become familiar with the drivers and teams. He’ll lean on others on the PA team for their expertise as well. And he’s excited for the opportunity. “I love the shape of the track and that

'Hobbs & Shaw' repeats at No. 1 against slew of newcomers

By Lindsey Bahr AP Film Writer

LOS ANGELES — Audiences helped the "Fast & Furious" spinoff "Hobbs & Shaw" take another lap at No. 1 even with an onslaught of four new major releases this weekend. From family films to R-rated adult fare, moviegoers had their pick as studios tried to capitalize on the waning days of summer. But although August can be a great opportunity for non-superhero films, it's not a sure thing. And this weekend some, such as "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," fared better than others, like the Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish mob thriller "The Kitchen." "There are always going to be casualties when there are this many openers," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for box office tracker Comscore. "They cannot always be lined up in the top four rankings." "Hobbs & Shaw" managed to hold on to first place again. According to estimates from Universal Pictures Sunday, the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham action flick fell 58% from its first weekend but added $25.4 million from North American theaters. It's now grossed $108.5 million domestically and $332.6 million worldwide. Second place went to the PG-13 film "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," from CBS Films and eOne Entertainment, which cut through the clutter with a better

Movie going audiences have helped the “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” take another lap at No. 1 even with the onslaught of new movies this weekend. than expected $20.8 million. Lionsgate distributed the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror which had been tracking to open in the mid-teens. "The filmmakers and

the team at CBS Films are thrilled that moviegoers are embracing the world of 'Scary Stories,'" del Toro said in a statement Sunday. "It's particularly satisfying to see families experiencing the fun

of the movie together." Good reviews helped raise its profile, although audiences were more underwhelmed after the fact, slapping it with a C CinemaScore.

Dergarabedian noted that, even with a PG-13 rating, horror movies once again prove to be, "a consistent draw at the box office." See REVIEW, Page 31

REVIEW

Continued from Page 30

Close behind in third was "The Lion King" with $20 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. With $1.3 billion globally, it's now surpassed "Beauty and the Beast" as Disney's highest-grossing "live-action" release. Newcomer "Dora and the Lost City of Gold," from Paramount Pictures, found a healthy audience too, earning an estimated $17 million for a fourth place start. Starring Isabela Moner, "Dora," based on the popular television series, also got good reviews from critics and audiences, who gave it an A CinemaScore. And in fifth place, Quentin Tarantino's star-vehicle "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" added $11.6 million and crossed the $100 million mark. But not all the newcomers were so lucky. The dog owner tearjerker "The Art of Racing in the Rain," with Milo Ventimiglia, opened in sixth place with $8.1 million. The Fox 2000 property was inherited by Disney in the takeover. And the '70s-set McCarthy and Haddish crime thriller "The Kitchen" flopped in seventh

with only $5.5 million. Based on an obscure Vertigo comic, the film from first time director Andrea Berloff (an Oscar-nominated screenwriter) features both McCarthy and Haddish in more dramatic roles. But critics were not impressed: The film currently has a dismal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences also largely stayed away. Warner Bros. distribution head Jeff Goldstein said that they were "very disappointed" with the results. "I think that the filmmakers took a very bold approach to their choice with the movie and I think it just didn't resonate with the viewers," Goldstein said. "The good news is the movie was a fairly low-budgeted film." Audiences also had a slew of new limited releases to choose between: The BTS concert film "Bring the Soul: The Movie," which earned $2.3 million from only 873 locations; "Brian Banks," based on the real story of a false accusation that upends a promising football star's life which debuted in 1,240 locations and earned $2.1 million; "The Peanut Butter Falcon," with Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson, which earned $205,236 from 17

"Audiences are confounded by the number of newcomers," Dergarabedian said. "There was so much overlap with all of these titles." But the marketplace is already looking ahead to the fall and the release of "It Chapter Two." "It's going to feel like summer in September when 'It' opens," Dergarabedian said.
