EDWARDSVILLE — The Edwardsville Art Fair has something for everyone — families and visitors of all ages can make a day of it — or a weekend. And, kids love the Edwardsville Art Fair’s “Mystery Box,” back for the second year due to its inaugural-year popularity last year. A Mystery Box costs $25 and though its contents are a mystery, its filled with useful and fun goodies, donated by local businesses, such as art supplies, a toy from Happy Up, gift cards for Edwardsville Arts Center art classes,

Artwork is judged on criteria including quality of form, technique, expression and presentation, among other analysis. Judges also select their top three pieces in each artist’s tent to recognize work from each, all of whom went through a process to be selected to appear in the fine art fair. The Best of Show winner receives $1,500; the nine Best of Category winners receive $800 each; and, Merit Award winners receive $350 each. A VIP Edwardsville Art Fair Party will take place on opening night of the fair with sponsors in attendance and live entertainment, held in the main tent. This year Edwardsville Arts Center will recognize a fair volunteer, as well. The Edwardsville Art Fair volunteer committee, led by Edwardsville Arts Center board member Sandy Tatoian, still is seeking volunteers. Opportunities include with the fair’s kid’s Create IT and Take IT program, led by board member Sarah Willig and sponsored by the Junior Service Club, at the Edwardsville Art Fair; loading and unloading; helping artists carry their work and set up their tents; information booth; entertainment stage; passing out water; grounds operations; booth-sitting; food delivery to artists for lunches and dinners; and, handing out Edwardsville Art Fair booklets at four different points of entry. Combining style complements ‘farmhouse’ décor By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EDWARDSVILLE — A modern home — or any home, really — can easily become a rustic sanctuary with the right pieces and vision. “My husband likes modern, I like rustic,” said Edwardsville homeowner Sherry Rinderer. “I’ve always been of the theory, if it’s within your budget and you like it, buy it. It will all come together. We made it work with the help of a few boutiques right here in our hometown.” Rinderer, 53, knows what she likes and believes shopping locally makes it fun, convenient and rewarding to put your money where your home is. This was her key in converting their home just built by Spencer Homes LLC last November into a rustic farmhouse oasis. Rinderer said that she believes DIY decorators don’t have to focus on one décor style, knowing where to shop, combining styles and bringing them together into one space can ultimately make a home feel comfortable, warm and inviting to the entire family. The Rinderer home, shared with
husband Todd, boasts four authentic reclaimed barn doors, which was the initial inspiration for their modern farmhouse décor. Her favorite barn door leads to her studio, RA: Rinderer Abstract LLC. Each barn door was re-claimed by B & N Barn Dismantling and Barnwood Sales, based in Bismarck, Missouri. Each custom barn door was created with 100% reclaimed barn wood. Owner Nick Meadows’ motto is, “Every Day is a Good Day to Go Green.” Sherry also enhances the interior farmhouse decor with what she describes as “pop colors” throughout the home where she and her husband plan to retire and spend their golden years. “My pop colors are orange, yellow and purple,” she explained about accents she added to her monochromatic-colored home using grays from Photos by Jill Moon | The Edge local Sherwin Williams paint store, Farmhouse-style-based bud vases hold tulips. Continued from Page 17 Bedding; Mary Janes Solid Oak Furniture; and, her most recent treasures were found at Kloss Furniture and Home Goods. Rinderer, a 1984 Edwardsville High School graduate, started painting with a purpose right out of high school, mostly as gifts for family, friends and for an occasional charity auction. She credits her high school art teacher, the late Dennis DeToye, as her mentor, who encouraged, motivated and inspired her to pursue art. “Mr. DeToye pulled me aside one day and asked me if I had any idea what kind of talent I had,” she recalled. “I never thought in a million years I’d ever really sell a painting.” She found herself at a crossroad and ended up studying law and landing a 30-year career in the finance industry, but art had always remained her passion. In 2015, she decided to pursue her passion. Since then Rinderer has sold several large abstract pieces that compliment many styles of interior décor, whether in a corporate setting or a home alcove. Today, her inspiration comes from many sources. Traveling and interacting with people from completely different cultures and viewing art in many aspects with an open mind, instantly welcomes creative thoughts for fresh pieces. Abstract is everywhere in home trends. It’s diversified and offers a welcoming blend with any theme; farm style, modern, eclectic, really anything. Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Ever been to Thailand?
Bann Thai, at 4 Club Centre Court in Edwardsville, is the hot spot around town, right
now. It seems like everyone is talking about it. Of course, we wanted to try it out.
Now we know what all the fuss was about. If you’ve never tried Thai food, it tends to be
a little spicy (that’s a good thing)

and has a little more of a “bite,” as in spicy heat, than Chinese cuisine. Lots of flavor, lots of curries, lots of taste. We started with shrimp steamed dumplings and fried spring rolls. Both were good — the dumplings were extraordinary. The two entrée choices we sampled and shared were Thai fried rice with chicken and the “Three Musketeer,” a combination of chicken, pork and beef (thus, the three), along with onions, bell pepper and mushrooms in a pepper sauce. Yum. The Thai fried rice came with carrots, onions, broccoli, tomato, bean sprouts and egg, with chicken. It comes without meat, but you can add pork, beef, seafood, and a choice of a few other items to personalize it. All of the entrees include your choice of chicken, mixed vegetables or tofu
Photo by Vicki Bennington (this is a chance to try it if you never have — I still haven’t, believe it or not). The menu is quite extensive, with a long list of appetizers (should have tried the Thai crab cakes, too), salads, entrees — with or without almost any kind of meat and seafood you can think of, and several side dish choices, with various sauces and combinations. The restaurant’s own description: “Chefs douse veggies, pineapple slices and more in creamy curries. Oyster sauce glazes stir-fried beef, mushrooms and broccoli.” And, there is certainly a long list of noodles and rice dishes. Using traditional Eastern spices, market-fresh veggies and herbs, and house-made sauces, the dishes are a little sweet, yet savory. Weekly board specials add several more choices.

FOOD
Continued from Page 20 How do you decide? Multiple trips — yep — that’s the only way to do it. Though we didn’t try them, the deep-fried bananas are supposed to be a great dessert. We split a slice of creamy, traditional cheesecake instead, and weren’t disappointed. Drinks include soft drinks, American ice tea, hot tea, and then you have Thai ice tea, a mix of black tea, spices, sugar, sweetened condensed milk and some other things, I think. Try it … you’ll like it. Bann Thai does not serve alcohol, but if you want to, you can bring your own! Which brings up a memory for me. We lived in Australia for two years, and almost all (maybe all) restaurants did not serve alcohol, so everyone — at least at that time — owned little “BYO” Three Musketeer.
containers that usually held two bottles of wine, which we carried to dinner with us, as a matter of course. That’s just what you did. I have noticed that more local establishments have that policy, now (though it seems in the U.S., the practice is referred to as “BYOB,” but I like the Australian “BYO”), and it is actually kind of fun. When we would go out with other couples “Down Under,” there was always sharing and sampling among the wines, and it added another element to the evening. Bann Thai also caters — for office parties, house parties, even weddings. Visit bannthaiinc.com for more information. In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. How to improve indoor air quality in winter
28 • Thursday, August 22, 2019 • Residential Revivals
Maintain indoor air quality all year long Millions of people anxiously anticipate the arrival of spring. Months spent cooped up indoors as temperatures outside dip below freezing can take their toll, and those first warm, sunny days of spring can be just what people need to kick the winter blues. Winter can be dreary for people confined to indoors as temperatures drop, and poor air quality in a home can add to that dreariness while adversely affecting individuals’ health. Air quality tends to suffer most in winter, but there are ways to ensure the air inside a home stays healthy all year long. • Inspect and address any sources of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an invisible, odorless gas that can contribute to poor indoor air quality and a host of health problems if it goes undetected in a home. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, potential sources of CO in a home include improperly vented natural gas appliances, such as stoves and water heaters, gas-powered tools that are used indoors, clogged chimneys, or blocked heating exhaust vents. Men and women can periodically inspect potential sources of CO and address any issues they find while also making sure all CO detectors are properly installed and functioning optimally. • Inspect HVAC ducts. Ductwork is used to deliver warm or cool air in homes with heating and air conditioning systems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to the duct surfaces without ever entering living spaces. However, the EPA notes that homeowners should consider having their
ducts cleaned if an inspection uncovers substantial visible mold growth. In addition, the EPA recommends homeowners consider cleaning if ducts are infested with vermin or clogged with excessive amounts of dust or debris. • Avoid chemical cleaning products. Chemical cleaning products may be great at disinfecting dishes, countertops and other areas in the home, but such items may be toxic and adversely affect indoor air quality. For example, chemicals such as bleach and ammonia, which are used in many commercial cleaning products, can linger in the air, irritating the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Homeowners concerned about the quality of air in their homes also can avoid scented products, such as air fresheners and scented detergents, which the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health notes may release volatile organic compounds into the air. • Inspect bathrooms for mold growth. Mold can grow on surfaces that are routinely wet, and that makes poorly ventilated bathrooms common sources for home mold infestations. Mold can adversely affect indoor air quality when mold spores are released, potentially triggering allergic reactions, asthma attacks and respiratory conditions. After bathing in bathrooms without vents, men and women can open windows so the room dries before mold can grow. In bathrooms with vents, make sure vents are running during baths and showers and afterward until ceilings, walls and floors appear dry. Poor indoor air quality can be easily addressed to ensure individuals stay healthy throughout the year.
