Grammy winner Christine Brewer’s latest role: Opera Edwardsville’s Artistic Advisor

LEBANON, Illinois — Grammy Award-winner Christine Brewer’s world stage opened to her at McKendree University where she attended before becoming one of the world’s most celebrated sopranos, having been named one of the top 20 sopranos of all time by BBC Music.

Described as “in her prime and sounding glorious” by the New York Times, Brewer was honored at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Album for her work on Bolcom’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience.” Since Opera Edwardsville’s launch in December, Brewer has

added to her many roles the artistic advisor for Opera Edwardsville (OE), now sharing her talent, experience and knowledge with OE’s founder and Artistic Director Chase Hopkins, of Edwardsville, Illinois.

an artistic advisor for the long range plan of Opera Edwardsville, Brewer held a Masterclass with soprano Mathilda Edge, a young soprano who joined Opera Edwardsville from the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center. Edge previously attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is an emerging operatic talent, on the verge of an international career.

“Opera Edwardsville was able to facilitate a working session for guest soloist and soprano Mathilda Edge, who joined us for a small house concert in July,” Hopkins explained. “Mathilda is on the verge of a major career with many parallels to Christine, in terms of temperament, personality and repertoire, and career trajectory. On the world stage, Brewer, who has lived in Lebanon, Illinois, for years, is highly regarded for her striking portrayal of the title role in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos,” which she has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Théatre du Chatelet, Santa Fe Opera, English National Opera and Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

But, it wasn’t all simple and glamorous for the singer who hit her career stride at around age 35, she recalled to The Edge and Hopkins recently at The Foundry Cafe in her beloved hometown, where she lives with her husband, Ross Brewer, a retired history teacher and her most staunch supporter. Her support system also includes

her grandson, Oscar, 6, and her daughter, Elisabeth, 35, both of whom frequently attend performances and travel with Brewer.

Brewer met her husband at McKendree, from where she graduated with a degree in

music education; the couple married in 1977 at McKendree’s Marion Bothwell Chapel, when professional opera performance was nary a thought in her head.

“You have to carve your own path,” Brewer said to The Edge.

From a music educator to one of the biggest, most celebrated voices in opera performance today, Brewer’s voice started out “small,” and she was grateful to McKendree instructor Glenn Freiner who didn’t push her voice in those days.

“He knew so much about voice and he was my mentor until the day he died,” she recalled.“He felt it was more important to keep it safe, and use my voice at the size it was.”

The Shawnee High School graduate attended the university from age 17 through 20, so it was natural that her singing voice hadn’t developed yet; its development occurred starting around age 28.

“I never saw an opera until college,” recalled Brewer, born in Springfield, Illinois, and raised in a town of 500, Grand Tower, situated on the Mississippi River in Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest.

At about age 21, she auditioned for the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, was accepted and became a soprano section leader, while also singing as a soprano soloist in the Choir of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton, Missouri. She had to learn a lot more than just the anthems for Sundays’ services, having to become familiar with the liturgy of the Episcopal church.

“I learned a lot from the organist and Choir Master Dr. Edward Wallace,” said Brewer, raised a Southern Baptist.

A few years later, she competed in the St. Louis Symphony Young Artists Competition. Though she didn’t win, a curious thing happened.

Continued from Page 5 founding general director, Richard Gaddes, was one of the guest judges in the Young Artists Competition. A few days after the competition, he sent a check to Brewer, in the amount she would have received had she won. She called to thank him, and he invited her to sing in the chorus of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Shortly thereafter, she joined the Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ chorus.

“Richard wanted to keep an eye on my voice and told Ross that he thought I should stop substitute teaching, and devote more time to studying and doing auditions,” she recalled. “They took a leap of faith, before I did.”

That same year, the soprano entered The Metropolitan Opera Council Audition, a triple-level nationwide search for emerging talent as soloists.

“I won it,” Brewer said, still with a trace of incredulity.

“It’s one of the world’s most important auditions,” Hopkins interjected.

This “make-or-break’” audition, singing “Song to the Moon,” the most popular excerpt from the opera “Rusalka,” became the cornerstone for the 32-year-old Brewer and her career on the world stage. She signed with New York City based agency IMG Artists, and then at age 35, made her international debut at London’s Royal Opera House.

Shortly after that, she signed with Askonas Holt Management in London and they managed her in Europe for nearly 20 years, until her manager, Peter Bloor, retired.

She is now managed by Lee Prinz at Colbert Artists Management in New York.

The concert will begin with works

by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, followed by a song cycle by Alan Smith called “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn” which utilizes letters from a World War II veteran and his wife back home in the states. Brewer recored this cycle with Craig Rutenberg for the Library of Congress. The musical program will continue with selections that echo four of Brewer’s predecessors — four great sopranos of the past, including Kirsten Flagstad (Norwegian soprano), Helen Traubel (from St. Louis), Eileen Farrel (American soprano) and Eleanor Steber (American soprano). Like Brewer, each of these sopranos had glamorous voices associated with the Wagnerian Repertoire.

“Christine is joined in performance by renowned pianist Craig Terry, who joins Opera Edwardsville from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This concert is a collaborative performance for singer and piano, which is a very intimate experience,” Opera Edwardsville founder and Artistic Director Chase Hopkins said. “The mances and many recordings, and maintains a down-to-earth approach to working in the arts,” Hopkins noted. “Her artistry and genuine stage presence inspire me as a performer, and her kindness and generosity inspire me as a human. Christine is with every major opera house and symphony, and Opera Edwardsville is incredibly fortunate to welcome her in our second concert, which kicks off our 2019 season.”

Opera and the Los Angeles Opera. She also has appeared around the world with numerous globally recognized orchestras.

Other accomplishments and activities of Brewer’s include currently serving on the Sullivan Foundation Board of Directors, based in New York City. The Sullivan Foundation, founded in 1957 as an organization, has served more than 1,000 young singers in their career beginnings. Brewer won this award in her early career.

Brewer also serves on the board for American Voices, a program that sends American performers to the Middle and Far East to perform and conduct workshops with young music students; sends teachers, musical scores and instruments to countries

there; and, forms orchestras with young musicians from diverse areas, thus unifying through music, she explained.

She also is on the Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ Arts Task Force, which helps young music teachers in the St. Louis region who need mentors and classroom resource materials.

Brewer helps connect retired music teachers who are willing to be mentors to these new young music teachers.

At her church, Lebanon’s St. Paul United Church of Christ, she is on a social justice committee, which is working on a new project to assist with senior citizen loneliness and isolation.

In Marissa, Illinois, about 15 years ago, Brewer started a program, called “Opera-tunities,” for the sixth graders in teacher Nancy Wagner’s class. It started out as geography program with a map of the world on the bulletin board and “Where in the World is Ms. Brewer?” She became more involved by bringing gifts from countries in which she sang and sending emails from across the world to the students, who also visit Brewer’s rehearsals at St. Louis’ Powell Hall when she sings with the St. Louis Symphony.

“I have tried to encourage the kids to follow their dreams,” she said.

She also has received three honorary doctorate degrees: from Trinity College, in Hartford, Connecticut, in music (famed late author Tom Wolfe received an honorary doctorate from Trinity the same year); from her alma mater, McKendree University, in fine arts; and, last winter from University of Missouri St. Louis in arts and letters.

A Q&A between Christine Brewer and Artistic Director Chase Hopkins Q (Hopkins): “What is your favorite opera of all time?”

A (Brewer): “My top five are ‘Tristan und Isolde,’ ‘Ariadne auf Naxos,’ ‘Peter Grimes,’ ‘Gloriana’ and ‘Don Giovanni.’”

Q: “Who is your favorite opera singer of all time?”

A: “My top three are Leontyne Price, Birgit Nilsson and Janet Baker.”

Q: “Where has been your favorite place to perform?”

A: “My top three are Wigmore Hall in London, Meyerson Concert Hall in Dallas and Disney Hall in L.A.” Q: “Any funny bloopers on stage?”

A: “Loosing my slip during a struggle with the Count in ‘Marriage of Figaro’ at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.”

Q: “What is the most ridiculous costume you’ve worn on stage? Favorite costume?”

A: “My costume for my ‘debut’ as a chorus member at Opera Theatre of St. Louis was in ‘Magic Flute.’ I wore a blue velvet one-piece pant suit, with a blue velvet cap, which covered not only my head, but also my ears — I sort of looked like a grape! I loved my Act III black velvet costume in a San Francisco production of ‘Tristan und Isolde.’”

Q: “What performance are you most proud of?”

A: “One of my most favorite productions was the Britten ‘Gloriana’ performance at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, which was directed by Colin Graham. I sang all of my Britten roles with Colin at least once. He directed most of Britten’s premieres of his operas in London, so I always felt like I was closer to Britten whenever Colin directed me in that repertoire. The Opera Theatre of St. Louis production was probably one of the most beautiful I’d ever been involved in. I loved all of my costumes in that production!”

Q: “Who is your favorite nonclassical artist?”

A: “I’m a big fan of Dolly Parton and St. Louis soul singer Brian Owens — and I love singing with him!”

Q: “If you could steal a character from another voice type, which would you love to sing?”

A: “I’d love to sing ‘Queen of the Night’ from ‘Magic Flute’!”

Q: “Who is the most amazing, or surprising, celebrity in the audience at one of your performances?”

A: “I was surprised to meet Alec Baldwin backstage at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City after a Mahler 8 performance.”

After all said and done, ‘Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood’ pretty good

I have a tense and begrudging history with writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s films. I unloaded a lot in my review of “The Hateful Eight” a few years back, about why and how the filmmaker continues to employ strange and anachronistic filming techniques to inevitably make a quality picture.

Prior to that, and I wholeheartedly pause to weigh again my love of westerns, I didn’t genuinely care for the vast majority of his work.

The popularity of “Pulp Fiction” astonishes me.

“Django Unchained” was, what, a slavery revenge cartoon? “Inglourious Basterds” was different and it gave us the villainy of actor Christoph Waltz, thank the movie gods.

And, all of these things lead us to his ninth picture, “Once Upon a Time in…

Hollywood,” which is tremendously good.

That is, until the final 10 minutes give it a polarizing, revisionist ending that is just this side of impossible to digest. It almost put a raincloud over the whole thing for me.

There are three overlapping stories throughout the long and meandering journey of “Once Upon a Time in…

a vague backdrop of the Charles Manson “Helter Skelter” murders. The first and foremost narrative is the one in which former cowboy TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) tries to save his film career in the spring of 1969. Dalton had a hit on NBC, but ended his run early to make the jump into motion pictures, which wasn’t then what it is today.

His movies were hits, too, but he was a much smaller fish in a much bigger pond and the fight for his piece of the pie kept getting tougher and tougher. Most days he just drinks and smokes himself into a stupor, so

much so that he has to be driven home by his one true friend and longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).

Booth’s story is secondary and less forthright. Edged out of Dalton’s newest series by a burned-bridge acquaintance (Kurt Russell, really great in his cameo), Booth spends a lot of time running errands and doing small home repairs at Dalton’s place, often shirtlessly. This gives him lots of time to cruise the town and flirt with the same girl (Margaret Qualley) he keeps seeing on Santa Monica Boulevard

with her thumb out. When he takes her home one day, the audience is tricked into learning more back-story than I think is actually intended, now as I reflect back. Allow me a few more lines to explain that theory.

See, the third-string plot follows around actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), the great beauty who is sadly most famous for being murdered by members of Manson’s cult in August of 1969.

Though in this movie, she’s Dalton’s next door neighbor and we get to spend some good times with her as she jets around L.A. with husband Roman

Polanski and parties at the Playboy Mansion with Michelle Phillips and Steve McQueen. Later, she runs errands and even treats herself to a matinee of one of her own movies (“The Wrecking Crew” with Dean Martin and Tina Louise).

Robbie’s performance ratchets up an otherwise lackluster move by the fellas in the cast to make a great movie! She’s all go-go boots and miniskirts. Her whole vibe brings to life exactly the honey-kissed SoCal look that the Beach Boys have been singing about all along.

If you’re going to see this movie expecting a Manson biopic, please don’t.

To dissuade you of that notion should be my biggest objective. It’s only ostensibly set in that sphere and it’s mostly a gas for the character study of Rick Dalton and his constant name-dropping, storytelling and ability to rekindle a pop culture love affair with late ’60s’ TV series, like, “Mannix” and movies like “The Great Escape.” I was happy to be suckered in, after all, I guess.

“Once Upon a Time in…

Hollywood” runs 161 minutes and is rated R for language throughout, some strong graphic violence, drug use and sexual references. I give this film three stars out of four.

Once upon a time in fatherhood: Tarantino to become a dad LOS ANGELES (AP) — Quentin Tarantino is going to be telling a whole new brand of “Once upon a time” tale — the bedtime-story kind.

The “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood” director is about to become a father.

His representative Katherine Rowe says Tarantino and his wife, Israeli model and singer Daniella Pick, are expecting a baby. No further details were released.

The couple met in 2009 and married last November just after Tarantino finished shooting “Once Upon a Time …

In Hollywood,” the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt that is a summer hit.

It’s the first child for the 56-year-old Tarantino, who also directed “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs,” and the 35-year-old Pick, who is the daughter of singer-songwriter Svika Pick.

Iron Maiden slays ‘Legacy Of The Beast Tour’ Indy stop

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — I attended a show this past weekend that featured fireworks, pyrotechnics, costume changes, set changes for every single number and some of the most energetic performers I’ve ever watched — no, it was not Cirque du Soleil — it was the legendary Iron Maiden on their “Legacy Of The Beast Tour.”

The iconic metal band performed in Indianapolis and I was fortunate to be able to photograph and review it.

The evening got started with opening band “The Raven Age,” featuring Iron Maiden-mastermind bassist Steve Harris’ son, George Harris. Now, it would be easy to assume that because George is in The Raven Age as to why the band got the call to open for Iron Maiden, but after watching Raven Age, it’s obvious that while this may play a factor in the decision, the band is talented and tight enough for the gig.

George and his band mates have a heavy edge to them offering a more modern sound, but the vocals are a melodic ’80s’ throwback. Vocalist Matt James delivers on the frontman duties and this, combined with the band’s tightness, makes for quite an act — more than capable of pulling off the opening slot for the Mighty Maiden.

I did hear what I thought to be some Maiden influences in some of the guitar work between George and Tony Maue, but I suppose that is to be expected given where George comes from.

What I appreciated the most about this band was that they remain unique unto themselves, while letting key influences show

through. All too often a band will try to mimic what has inspired them and then become a watereddown version of its inspiration, but not The Raven Age, very much worth checking out if you’re not familiar with them.

Iron Maiden, where could I possibly begin? These guys are still so much on top of their game that I am not sure I can conjure enough adjectives from my vocabulary to properly describe what I witnessed.

Indy’s Ruoff Home Mortgage Center for Music is a beautiful and massive outdoor amphitheater, loaded full of metalheads of ALL ages. While walking the crowd, I saw families, old high school buddies, couples and parents, all sporting their “Maiden” attire, making ready to “Up The Irons” for the legendary band’s performance.

When Iron Maiden took the stage, this massive crowd exploded with applause, like I have rarely, if ever, heard before. Straight out of the

gate I knew we were in for a fantastic show as the set for the OPENING number showcased a 90% scale of a Supermarine Spitfire hanging from the rafters!

Did you get that? An almost life-size British WAR PLANE was hanging from the rafters to OPEN the show with, as any good and true Maiden fan would recognize, of course, “Aces High.” Steve, Bruce and the rest of the British rockers came out of the gate swinging and never let up.

The night rolled on with one hit after another, while the costumes and stage backdrops changed to suit every single one. Iron Maiden has had minor member adjustments throughout the years but nothing too serious, with the exception of vocalist Bruce Dickinson stepping away from the band for a spell. But Bruce is BACK and he still sounds incredible.

If you are familiar with Iron Maiden’s music, you know three things: 1) It is amazing; 2)

Songs can be lengthy; and, 3) It’s vocally taxing. With points two and three in mind, it would be easily understandable if the Mighty Maiden were starting to slow down a bit, or shorten the duration of their set. After all, none of us are getting any younger, right? I suppose you don’t become legendary by “slowing down.” As a matter of fact, these guys still move about

the stage with such energy that they are difficult to photograph and keep up with. I was truly amazed with everything I saw during their set.

The Iron Maiden “Legacy Of The Beast Tour” is riddled with noteworthy moments, iconic images, all the merchandise one could ever want and all the iconic elements that have made this group so successful throughout the years.

My favorite moments from the show were watching Bruce and Eddie fight it out on stage during “The Trooper,” and the amazing stage setting and production that takes place during “Flight of Icarus,” which featured an amazing Icarus backdrop and handheld flame throwers. I only heard a couple of brief moments that were not vocally of album quality and the band was so tight musically that their set was magical.

Iron Maiden is STILL the band to beat when it comes to epic performance and it would seem that they are not slowing down…..any. If you have a chance to witness this show, it is definitely worth the money… truth be told, it is probably worth more than what you pay.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington As it turns out, eating spinach is easy, especially when it is the main ingredient in Knorr spinach dip.

I’ve heard that this is a concoction that has been around “forever,” but somehow it escaped my radar. Until last month, I had lived my whole life without eating this creamy, tasty, delicious dip — or knowing that it even existed!

We were driving Vicki home Bennington from our beach vacation this year, and had plans to stop at our friends’ house in Knoxville, Tennessee. We did, and this wonderful dip and veggies were waiting for us when we arrived, tired and hungry.

When I first saw it and could tell there was spinach in it, I thought it was spinach and artichoke dip, which is definitely not my favorite, due to the sheer “cheesiness” of it.

Then we were told that it was a kind of an old-fashioned dip that had been in vogue in the 1960s or 1970s and had then lost the limelight for a while.

So, maybe we just didn’t have dips when it was in style … I’m not sure. Nevertheless, my husband and I tried it, and man, did we ever like it. In fact, he’s not a big dip eater, but he was willing to try it.

We couldn’t get enough.

because we both kept going back for more. I loved the selection of vegetables that were served with it — carrots, cucumbers, peppers — but I think I liked the Wheat Thin crackers with it even more.

Evidently, the original way to serve it was in a scooped-out sourdough bread bowl (similar to hollowing out rye bread for dill dip), served with bread pieces. That sounds like a nice option, too, but for right now, we’re stuck on

the crackers and veggies.

Following our wonderful dip experience, our hosts followed that up with dreamy chicken salad and croissants, and a fresh fruit medley that were all great, but that dip, though.

When we got home, I had to try it myself. At first, I couldn’t find the Knorr mix that it calls for.

Turns out, it is stocked by the soups, and for some reason, I kept thinking it should be by the salad dressings. Finally, lo and

behold, I found it!

Here’s the recipe in case you haven’t heard of it either. If you make it to take to a party or serve to

point later, so if you do remember earlier versions, they probably didn’t have onions) • In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, water chestnuts, scallions and Knorr mix. Stir to combine. Cook and then stir in spinach, breaking up any clumps. Cover and chill two hours or overnight.

Sheryl Crow feels 'liberated' by saying goodbye to the album

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sheryl Crow has a lifetime of stories of hanging out with rock stars, pop stars, athletes, icons and music royalty, some even featured on her new collaborative record, but don't expect her to start revealing any secrets in an autobiography.

"I mean, there are certain people that would have to die first in order for me to tell the real story," Crow said in a one-room church she had built on her property in Nashville, Tennessee, that houses a strange and eclectic collection of religious-themed statues, crosses, antique dolls, mirrors and stained glass.

Her laughter echoed in the tall ceiling and then she felt bad about saying that aloud. "That is terrible. I did not say that," Crow said.

The Grammy-winning Crow does have rock 'n' roll secrets, but she's happy to keep some of them squirreled away like the antiques in that building.

"I've lived them and I love being able to reflect on them, but I don't know that I feel the need to share them with the world," Crow said.

If Crow is feeling a bit reflective about her lengthy career, it's because she's at a turning point, both looking backward at all those musical icons that inspired her and trying to uplift a new generation especially female rockers. "Threads," out last Friday, features more than 20 other artists, including Keith Richards, Neil Young, Maren Morris, Stevie Nicks, St. Vincent, Sting and Eric Clapton.

Crow said it is her last full-length album and she feels "liberated."

"I feel pretty good about this being my farewell to making full length albums," Crow said.

She's accepting of that inevitability, even if she thinks it has hurt artists like herself who have been making music for generations.

"You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube," Crow said.

Crow's album feels like a star-studded farewell tour, where she reunites with some of the best guitarists still living.

She reunited with Richards, who she met when the Rolling Stones asked her to play with them in the 1990s, on a cover of "The Worst," and Bonnie Raitt's slide

guitar matches up with Mavis Staples' soulful vocals on "Live Wire."

"Rock is not dead. Guitar playing is still cool," Crow said. "I was a rock kid. I wanted to be in the Rolling Stones but I wanted to be Keith."

Producer and drummer Steve Jordan, who plays in Richards' solo band as well as the John Mayer Trio and won a Grammy for producing "Continuum," said that he and Crow tried as much as possible to be in the studio with the guest artists during recording, including with Chris Stapleton on "Tell Me When It's Over," with Jason Isbell on Bob Dylan's "Everything is Broken," and with Joe Walsh on "Still the Good Ole Days."

"It made for a more personal approach," said Jordan.

He said that while Crow does have a lot of famous friends, the album not a reflection of her Rolodex, but of her impressive career and the friendships she's made.

"The whole concept was people that she loves," Jordan said.

And it wouldn't be a Sheryl Crow record if she didn't use the opportunity to speak her mind about the state of the world.

Jordan suggested bringing Chuck D, one of rap's politically and socially conscious pioneers, on a song called "Story of Everything," also featuring Andra Day and Gary Clark Jr., that touches on everything from the Charleston church shooting, Congress and

economic inequality across the country.

"This is the story of a lot of small towns in America," Crow said. "It's definitely happening in my small town where a lot of the large corporations, the factories, have all moved out."

Crow will still be recording and putting out music and touring, but not be tied to the structure and time demands of an album. But she also wants to explore her non-musical interests as well.

"The environment to me has always been my main passion," said Crow. "I want to be more involved with philanthropic work. So we'll see. I'm at a point where I am OK with not knowing."
