By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — The 10th anniversary Rotary Criterium Festival’s guaranteed exhilarating atmosphere is equal to the adrenaline rush felt by the bicyclists who compete in the Criterium and, to add to the excitement, this year’s festival will feature a special guest. Six-time Olympic medalist Jackie JoynerKersee will help commemorate the festival by announcing the start of the second annual Downtown Dash — a “Rotary Fun Run”
— for all ages and fitness levels capable of a casual jog of 1.4 miles. The Dash starts at 6 p.m. during the Rotary Criterium, which takes place from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, in Downtown Edwardsville, Illinois. “That will be a sight, most festival guests will see Jackie and we’re hoping for a very large contingent of runners,” said Rotarian and Criterium Race Director Brian Mulhall. “Jackie will pose for a group photo with the See RIDE, Page 7

RIDE
The Edwardsville Rotary Downtown Dash sponsored by Carrollton Bank
Continued from Page 4 runners behind her at the start/finish line.“ Joyner-Kersee is a four-time Olympic qualifier and, in 2014, Sports Illustrated for Women voted the Olympian “The Top Female Athlete of the 20th Century.” Joyner-Kersee will award the Elite Division runners their medals, estimated to happen around 7:20 p.m. at the start/finish line. Sponsored by TheBANK of Edwardsville >>> Busey Bank, this year’s Rotary Criterium Festival is dedicated to the memory and service of late Edwardsville Rotarian Lois Ladd and her husband, Mike. “Rotary will be making a contribution toward two of their charities,” Mulhall noted. Rotary members also have come up with a visual recognition of the Ladds, who passionately served the region. “We will make and wear tie-dye volunteer T-shirts,” Mulhall explained to The Edge. “And, being tie-dye, that is so Lois and Mike. It’ll be a great tribute to them for how much they helped within this community and outside of this community. Lois just loved volunteering for the Criterium. She worked most of the day assisting cyclists and helping with safety. Lois was a thirty year Rotarian and we so miss her and Mike. We will have a great event in honor of their spirit and for their service.” Now entering its tenth year, TheBANK of Edwardsville >>> Busey Bank Rotary Criterium is a series of high-speed bicycle races complemented with a foot race; free kids’ races; a Kids Zone with an art tent where youngsters can make a take-home craft; free kids helmet give away while supplies last; kids helmet fitting; a Food Zone with five Edwardsville restaurants; and, an open container perimeter, all on the streets of Downtown Edwardsville. Patrons also can order food and beverages of choice from brick-and-mortar Downtown restaurants to enjoy within the festival perimeter. “This event would not be possible without the tremendous support of the city of Edwardsville,” Mulhall said. “Mayor Hal Patton, the public works and street departments, parks and recreation, aldermen, police and paramedics all help to make this a great day.” Edwardsville Rotary member and a city Ward 4 alderman, S.J. Morrison, hatched the idea for the Rotary Criterium. “He went to Indiana University, where cycling is huge,” Mulhall recalled. “He learned about the cycling criterium races several years before he brought the idea forward to the club.” In general, a criterium is a bicycle race on a fast-track circuit road course with quite a few turns in a downtown atmosphere. The Rotary Criterium took place first on a Sunday, on the See RIDE, Page 8

Volunteering at the Rotary Criterium Festival There are several shifts and jobs available the day of the Criterium, from 12 p.m., when the streets will be closed to vehicular traffic, until tear down ending around 12 a.m. If you would like to inquire about volunteering email Rotarian John McDole at john.a.mcdole@gmail. com.
You and your family, friends and coworkers can jog, run or dash 1.4 miles for a great cause! Participating in the second annual “Rotary Fun Run,” officially known as the Downtown Dash, with every step taken, directly supports the charitable activities of the Edwardsville Rotary Club. That means participants are supporting grants, scholarships and service projects in the Edwardsville, Illinois, community and communities just like it all over the world. The Edwardsville Rotary Downtown Dash is a running event within the lineup of Criterium cycling races, all taking place during this year’s Rotary Criterium Festival, from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, in Downtown Edwardsville. Participants will raise money for the Edwardsville Rotary Club. Downtown Dash takes place at 6 p.m. on the same 0.7 mile course on which the cyclists compete and it consists of two laps. A casual jogging pace will be able to finish the Open Division time limit of 20 minutes. Visit downtowndash.info to register. Pre-register by Aug. 10 to lock in a $25 entrance fee and guarantee a Tshirt; day of $30.
Rotary Criterium Food Zone Sponsored by Chef’s Shoppe the Food Zone opens at 3 p.m. and is located at Main and St. Louis streets near the courthouse. Four dining options under a huge tent: Catrinas; Edison’s; Clean Eatz; and, Goshen Butcher Shop. Big Daddy’s will serve beverages as well. On the other end of Main Street Peel Wood Fired Pizza will serve food and beverages. The open container perimeter is on Main Street and alcohol is not allowed out of the perimeter.
Rotary Criterium Kids’ Zone At the intersection of Main and Vandalia streets, from 3 to 7 p.m., kids can make and take home a craft in the Art Tent sponsored by First Mid Bank & Trust. The Edwardsville Children’s Museum will lead a sandcastle making activity. Edwardsville Township and First Mid Bank & Trust are providing free helmets for children while supplies last and helmet fitting also is available. Parents can register their children for the four free kids races from 3 to 5 p.m.

RIDE
Continued from Page 7 same Downtown course as it follows now. Then it moved to Saturday. “And, it has just grown to what it is today,” Mulhall said. “We are considered a highly technical and challenging course, the perfect setting with a variety of tight turns and straightaways. Cyclists have to stay on their guard and focused.” The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau of Southwest Illinois named the Rotary Criterium Festival as its 2018 Best Festival in six counties: Madison, Macoupin, Jersey, Calhoun, Montgomery and Greene. With the fun comes fierce high-speed bicycle racing. The U.S.A. Cycling-sanctioned event requires strict guidelines — from safety and ease of registration to qualified cycling officials who monitor and judge who wins races. The payout is $10,000, substantial for a Midwest regional race. The Criterium typically hosts 250 to 350 cyclists from 12 states. “Cyclists really like our setting, the competition and the size of the crowd,” Mulhall said. “The crowd is well-behaved and energetic — they get pumped. It’s a showcase for outsiders of the cycling world, as well as a day encompassing a proud event for the community.” Rotary Criterium volunteers — at least 150 individuals — install thousands of feet of barricades, haul hay bales and prepare the course, all within three hours of the start of the festival. Cyclists ride between 25 mph and 40 mph, taking the course’s turns just inches apart, at which point spectators can feel wind gusts from centrifugal force. “It’ll take your breath away!” Mulhall exclaimed. “All that said, I believe the highlight of the day, for me, is the four free kids’ races.” The kids’ races are divided by age groups: 3 and younger; 4 to 6 years old; 7 and 8 years old; and, 9 to 11 years old. “We will have two hundred-plus kids participating in these, along with parents marching in groups down Main Street, to music, with spectators cheering. I get choked up at that moment, my wife Lisa and I raised our kids in Edwardsville and the memories this creates are priceless.” Visit criteriumedwardsville.com for more information.

Flexibility, support helps interior designer balance work, family
Career, ambition can go with being full-time mom ON THE COVER
For All About… A client’s kitchen designed by nationally recognized interior designer Ashleigh Schroeder, 38, of Godfrey, Illinois. Schroeder encourages people not to be afraid of color and to think outside the box when it comes to design. By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com GODFREY — Sometimes you really can have it all — if you try, as nationally recognized interior designer Ashleigh Schroeder seemingly accomplishes with forethought and an established support system. Schroeder, a 38-year-old mother of two, balances working full time, transitioning to a business owner, running her household, spending quality time with her family, and baking and decorating cakes. Occasionally, she even indulges her hobby as a musician. “There’s no reason you can’t be a mom full time and own your own company,” said Schroeder, of Godfrey, Illinois, who three months ago started the process of owning the business, National Kitchen & Bath Inc., for which she’s worked full time as an interior designer for nearly 14 years. The 39-year-old company, based in Webster
Groves, Missouri, will be Schroeder’s when a two-year transition period concludes, she explained to All About. Her mentor, Doug Chapman, who currently owns the business, will then work for Schroeder in an interesting role reversal in the kitchen and bath design field, which tends to be male dominated. “Don’t be afraid to be the only woman in a room full of men,” she noted. “Doug is like a second dad to me. He loves what he does and doesn’t want to retire completely, so he’ll be my employee.” The two-year ownership process is to ensure a smooth transition for everyone in the company and learn the business side. She already led and oversaw a crucial ownership role when National Kitchen & Bath’s exclusive 35-year partnership with Wood Mode Cabinets dissolved. “We found out about nine weeks ago, via text message, that they closed their doors,”
she said of a potential supply crisis that was handily avoided. “We’ve been traveling, finding new cabinet lines that we wanted to take on and found three. We’re excited about moving forward with those and not looking back.” While overseeing her own National Kitchen & Bath design projects and working one-on-one with multiple clients, Schroeder toured U.S. cabinet-making factories, traveling up to four days every other week for six weeks to find the right cabinet lines. National Kitchen & Bath specializes in custom cabinetry. “We’ve always prided ourselves doing semi-custom and custom cabinetry and I won’t have it any other way,” Schroeder said about her future company. Originally from Dyersberg, Tennessee, Schroeder’s family moved to Bethalto, Illinois, when she was 8 years old, just a few

The 1998 Civic Memorial High School graduate played saxophone in the Lewis & Clark Jazz Band from ages 14 to 33, when she had her first child, Miles Lennon Schroeder, 5, named for music legends Miles Davis and John Lennon. “Miles’ due date was on John Lennon’s birthday, which my mom shares, but he came a week early,” Schroeder noted. “I was really hoping for that due date, but by time you get there, you’re OK with it.” Schroeder met her husband, Waylon Schroeder, while playing with the Lewis & Clark Concert Band. Both played sax and sat next to each other when she was a high school senior and he a college freshman. She also sang with the Great Rivers Choral Society. She still sings occasionally with her husband in the

DESIGNER Continued from Page 13 band The Wherehouse Project, one of many regional bands in which he plays; he teaches band and choir full time at Jerseyville Middle School. “I really enjoy it when I get the chance. Music is what I do for fun, at least I did before I had kids,” she said. “It’s all about trying to find the balance, which I achieve only because of a great support system at home and at work.” Schroeder’s mother, Cheryl Roberds, of Bethalto, and her husband’s parents, Marsha and Dale Schroeder, of Grafton, Illinois, help with Miles and his 3-year-old sister, Ella Francis Schroeder, named for the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. And, Schroeder’s employer allows flexibility in the office. “Of course there are expected office hours, but I can make my own hours as needed and have flexibility if there’s a program at school or have a sick kid,” she said. “I can bring my kids to the office or grab my stuff and work from home, if necessary. And then, between my husband, mom and in-laws, I have a great team to back me up.” Schroeder graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s in interior design and a music minor. She started her career as a draftsman at an architectural firm, which wasn’t ideal but she took the job anyway to start her career, she recalled. Her second and only other career move came when she heard about an opening at National Kitchen & Bath. “When I started I thought, ‘Kitchen and bath isn’t really what I want to do, but it’s better than what I’m doing,’ so I thought I’d give it a shot,” Schroeder recalled. “It turned out I loved it and I’ve been there ever since. When I started pursuing design, I thought I wanted to do commercial design, ideally in entertainment like hotels and casinos, but turns out I was wrong. Sometimes what you think you want to do, isn’t what you end up being really good at. You have to be flexible with yourself to find balance.” Today, Schroeder is a nationally certified interior designer, a nationally certified kitchen and bath designer and a member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association. She’s earned national recognition being featured in Designer Kitchens Bath & Other Rooms publications and in Closets Magazine, which, for both, she’s judged national design competitions. Regionally, she’s been featured twice in St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles magazine, for which she’s also judged kitchen and bath design contests. “I really enjoy working with clients; I enjoy the space planning and organization that a kitchen or bathroom requires; I love a challenge of fitting someone’s entire wish list into

DESIGNER Continued from Page 16 the space that they have to work with; and, enjoy working one-on-one to turn clients’ dreams into reality,” Schroeder explained. She also loves inspiring clients to try new ideas. “I encourage people not to be afraid of color, or think outside the box and choose
something their neighbor doesn’t have,” she continued. “People say, ‘Well, my neighbor has this,’ so I encourage them to choose what their neighbor doesn’t have and make it for themselves.” As a baker and cake designer, Schroeder noted that her kitchen needs might be different than what another person needs. “I design for each individual,” she said. “The way I work in my kitchen, baking cakes, might be very different than the way you function in your kitchen. I do meal prep on
Sunday for healthy meals through the week, whereas you might like to prepare small meals nightly, so I want to build a kitchen that works for the way each individual client cooks.” Schroeder sees a job through from beginning to end, from the moment she first walks in the door until the job is cleaned up. She also schedules plumbers and electricians, helping clients make all of those decisions. The same goes for designing bathrooms.
“A bathroom is all about function and trying to fit the most amount of storage into a usually small space,” she noted. “I think about storage needs, special needs and then design to that. If someone is elderly, giving them a big bathtub is not helpful, whereas designing a walk-in shower or designing for aging in place is helpful. It has to be functional. There’s no point in having something if it’s not functional.”

Continued from Page 17 Organization and function is key to Schroeder’s life balance, especially as her children continue activities and start new ones this summer. Miles takes swimming classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and will start piano lessons soon; Ella starts dance classes soon. “When she starts, I’ll be in Jamaica with my husband, so I definitely rely on my support system, I couldn’t do it without them,” she said. “It’s important taking a trip with just my husband. It’s been a big year for us with all the changes at work and I lost my father, Bill, in March. It gives us much needed time to reconnect and have some down time.” To contact Ashleigh at National Kitchen & Bath, email her at ashleigh@nkb.com.

Simple steps toward a healthier home By Melissa Rayworth Associated Press Can your home help you get healthier? Interior designers say clients don't just want help creating a more beautiful home anymore. They want to create living spaces where they will cook healthier foods, breathe healthier air and improve overall wellness. Here, interior design experts Jon Call of Palm Springs, California-based Mr. Call Designs, and New Yorkers Young Huh and Carolyn DiCarlo recommend general approaches to creating a healthy home. CONSCIOUS CLEANING "The first thing I do when I go into a client's home is talk to them about how they take care of their home," says Call. He looks at how they're cleaning their home and what products they use. "Cleaning is really the baseline," he says, "not only for insuring the interior is healthful but also to actively decorate your home." A deep-cleaning session can inspire changes you hadn't considered: Wash your windows, DiCarlo says, and consider reorienting your furniture to take advantage of a room's
natural light. Call agrees: "When I clean my coffee table, in order to oil the wood I'm going to take everything off of it," he says. When it's time to put items back, he'll ask: "Do I really need this remote control here? Is it time to ditch the candles?" All three designers suggest switching to natural cleaning products. Call recommends learning to make small batches of cleaning products from a handful of items like white vinegar, baking soda and lemon oil. Your air will be healthier, you'll save money, you'll need less space for storing cleaning products, and you won't be buying disposable plastic spray bottles. CREATING SPACE FOR WELLNESS Although her background is in architecture and design, DiCarlo's work with clients begins with the question of well-being. She suggests they walk through their home and "check how they feel when they enter a room. Whether it makes them feel kind of enlightened, whether it make them depressed. Is it too big and makes them feel small, or too small and makes them feel clut-

tered?" Noting those responses can help you decide what changes are necessary and which rooms need attention. CURATED KITCHENS Huh sees more homeowners converting from gas-powered ranges to energy-efficient, cleaner induction cooking. "There are no gases and no heat produced from the cooking," she says. "It works by magnetically charging the surface of the cooktop, which creates heat. But it's not burning fuel." New refrigerators with windows let you keep tabs on how fresh your foods are. And energy-efficient dishwashers conserve water. Call recommends making your own natural dishwasher soap rather than using store-bought products, whose chemicals can leach into the air when the dishwasher is running and hot. Another trend: growing organic produce in your kitchen. Besides counter-top and window-sill herb gardens, Huh says, consider adding cabinets with lights and soil for growing lettuces, ber-
ries and more. CLEARING THE AIR Choose paints that don't "off-gas" toxic chemicals, Huh says, and sofas and mattresses that aren't treated with chemicals that release unhealthy gases. "As much as you can try to bring in natural fibers and things that were painted or dyed or printed in a responsible way," do so, she says. DiCarlo agrees: "Look to nature to inspire you," she says, whether that means adding plants or swapping out synthetics for natural fabrics. If clients want to scent their homes in soothing and healthful ways, Call advises using natural oil diffusers rather than synthetic fragrances. "You've got to be really careful with all the parafins and waxes," he says. Because essential oils are mixed with a "carrier oil," read the fine print. "In the U.S., they don't have to tell you what carrier oil they're using," Call says, "so I assume the worst, unless a company is really transparent. Look at labels."

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington
Here’s to Fresh Veggies!
Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home.
Eating healthy does not have to be hard, and it certainly doesn’t have to be tasteless, especially in the middle of summer, when fresh vegetables abound. I didn’t really feel like cooking one evening (actually, I feel that way a lot), so I decided to make a salad. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I had a fullfledged meal on the plate. OK, I did have to cook the shrimp and the eggs, but neither one takes a whole lot of effort, either. The most labor-intensive part of this fresh summer salad was chopping, cutting or tearing the vegetables. I actually like to tear my
lettuce. I think I read somewhere that it is easier on the lettuce, and it keeps it from turning brown around the edges. Others say that’s an “old wives’ tale,” so tear or cut, whatever you like, but I do recommend that it ends up in fairly small pieces, whichever way it gets there. I do not like to get a salad — especially at a restaurant — with giant hunks of lettuce. The next thing I did was cut up the tomatoes. In my opinion, there is nothing quite as delicious as a fresh tomato from the garden, especially when sprinkled with black pepper. This time of year, you can visit one of the area farmers markets, like
The Land of Goshen Community Market in Edwardsville, Illinois, or The Alton Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market in Alton, Illinois. And tomatoes are always what I’m most anxious to find. The taste is so different than what you buy in the store the rest of the year. I load the salad with a lot of chopped tomato. Also, I have to admit, the very best tomato is one that has never been refrigerated. But, unless you grow them yourself or have a relative, neighbor or close friend who grows them (and you can let them know not to refrigerate your take), you are probably going to buy tomatoes that have been in the refrigerator.
Vicki’s shrimp salad They are still good. There’s just a little bit better flavor
Vicki Bennington|For The Edge for the ones that have never been chilled. Next, open a can of sliced black olives, drain, and scatter over the top of the salad, and slice a hard-boiled egg for a little extra flavor and protein. Here’s the best way to boil a perfect egg: Put desired amount of eggs in a pan, cover with warm water, and sprinkle liberally with sea salt. See FOOD, Page 23

Birthday fun worth drive, ‘Phoenix’ not so much FOOD By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist Recently, for my birthday, I did all of the things that I love to do. I slept late. I let my mom cook a big dinner and celebrated with my family at home. It’s a good life that I have. I also went to the movies because that’s how I celebrate many of the special occasions in life. It’s getting harder and harder to see a movie in a theater that I haven’t visited before. Thankfully, Fandango has a very convenient search radius feature on its app that can draw a map to all the cinemas up to 100 miles of Edwardsville. Last year I tackled a drive-in, way down south. This year I headed east, to Effingham, to the third of three RMC Cinemas locations. It’s a quaint, unassuming little mall multiplex that is apparently going through a major renovation to add a cafe and two more screens. It was worth the drive, as most birthday adventures tend to be. However, the new X-Men flick, “Dark Phoenix,” wasn’t. It was slow and boring and maybe the most tedious entry yet in a 12-film franchise that has been going downhill for years. The first film in the series was a huge deal when it launched in the summer of 2000. The X-Men had been battling racism, adolescence and Magneto for nearly 40 years by that point and the world was ready. Hugh Jackman broke out big as buff, sarcastic Wolverine and his arc became the most successful part of the series, leading him to anchor most of the sequels and his own spin-off series that culminated in “Logan” a few years ago; it was the best of the whole lot. Except for periodic flashes of greatness (Nightcrawler invading the White House in 2003’s “X-2” and 2011’s casting of Jennifer Lawrence before most critics became of sick of her), the X-Men movies have always seemed a little heavy on the flash — cool superpowers battling other cool superpowers — but have either failed to properly develop character personalities or done so in exaggerated fashion. I never bought into them like I did “The Avengers.“ Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is the Dark Phoenix. That’s the moniker her teammates give her after she encounters a cosmic energy beam while rescuing members of one of NASA’s shuttle missions in 1992, when this film is ostensibly set. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), more or less, forces the X-Men to help where they can as way of ingratiating mutants to the American people. Back on Earth, Grey’s close call reveals itself as a building omnipotence as her mutant powers grow exponentially and threaten to make her a hazard to those around her. The source of the power is revealed to be an alien
Continued from Page 22 Bring just to a boil, then turn off burner and let eggs set in pan for 10 minutes. Drain, cover with cold water and peel. The shell comes off easily, the yolk is perfectly cooked and the white is not rubbery. The other protein I added was shrimp. To cook, peel shrimp and remove tails. In a skillet, melt three tablespoons of butter and two tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Add shrimp, and turn as they just start to change color from gray to pink. Add garlic, salt and pepper, to taste. Remove shrimp to a bowl before they are completely pink (shrimp can become rubbery very quickly, if overcooked). You can always substitute chicken if you are not a shrimp lover. Cut up chicken tenderloins and cook the same way as the shrimp. And there you have it — a healthy, delicious meal in less than half an hour. We used Old Kinderhook Creamy Sweet Onion Vinaigrette, The Trophy Room’s signature salad dressing that I was able to purchase by the bottle on a recent trip to the Ozarks, where Old Kinderhook and its restaurant, The Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP Trophy Room, are located. It’s not the lowest in calories or fat that you will find, but it is “Dark Phoenix” cast member Sophie Turner, who plays lead character Jean Grey, who is the so tasty! Obviously, you can substitute your Dark Phoenix, arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of the latest X-Men movie at TCL Chinese favorite dressing or a low-fat or low-calorie Theatre. version that suits your needs.
race called the D’Bari and their leader, Vuk (Jessica Chastain, really slumming it here), is one of a never-ending parade of antagonists for Grey. She turns to Magneto (Michael Fassbender) for help, which proves disastrous. And, the government wants to stop her, obviously. Turner’s talent as an actor surprises me. I also think “Game of Thrones’” Sansa Stark character was overrated and Turner’s Jean Grey character is just not of the caliber to be a lead. “Dark Phoenix” will be the last of the direct stories for a little while in this universe. A long-delayed film called “New Mutants” is still expected to be released late next summer, but Disney’s future plans for the series are now vague since its purchase of the film rights in its mega-deal with 21st Century Fox. And, I would say, it’s the right time for a little breather. Lawrence is opting out. Wolverine is dead. The box office for “Dark Phoenix” was embarrassing and rightly so. If you’re going to make a summer tentpole movie about your franchise’s least interesting character, you deserve this grim fate. Maybe they’ll reboot it again in five years. That’s about how long it takes to forget a Marvel origin story these days. Just ask Tobey Maguire. Or, Andrew Garfield. “Dark Phoenix” runs 113 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action including some gunplay, disturbing images and brief strong language. I give this film half of one star out of four.
