Edwardsville Children’s Museum hosts hours of fun, education
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — The Edwardsville Children’s Museum Discovery Garden teaches sustainability and environmental responsibility, which is a focus of the museum’s education component in its mission to stimulate curiosity and cultivate learning “at the age of wonder.” On a vacation to Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1997 Carla Johnson and her family went to a recently opened children’s museum. Her visit inspired her to open a children’s museum in the Metro East area. Two years later, in 1999, after consulting with local leaders and beginning fundraising, the first Edwardsville Children’s Museum Board of Directors meeting took place. Exhibit plans, location search, grant writing and fundraising took place over the next few years culminating the grand opening of the Edwardsville Children’s Museum on Feb. 1, 2003. MUSEUM Continued from Page 4
In 2014 the museum was faced with the possibility of having to close its doors, but the community came together and raised more than $100,000 in nine months. Now the Edwardsville Children’s Museum is set to operate smoothly for many years to come. The incredible contributions from the community has made the Edwardsville Children’s Museum what it is today. Two years ago the museum grew yet again, with continued support from the community, raising $85,000 in its two-year capital campaign. “This year we’ve done significant renovation, constructed and opened eight new exhibits, gave the building a whole facelift, painted the walls and window trim, and it’s been quite a big overhaul,” said the Edwardsville Jill Moon|The Edge Children’s Museum Executive Director AbiThe Edwardsville Children’s Museum includes its Exhibits Gallery and Hawthorne Animal Hospital, right, where little ones can experience what gail Schwent. “And, while doing that, we built it’s like to care for animals in this two-story exhibit featuring a vet clinic, grooming area, climber and education about pet care and service the Discovery Garden, which really increased animals. I could see the wheels turning in their heads,” Schwent said. “In our Discovery Garden, kids have to construct their own play, like build a pirate ship, or a castle, using gross motor skills and fine motor skills, which they don’t use as much today. “As a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors, exploring nature all over the north St. Louis County area, from my mom’s garden in our backyard to hiking through the woods with my dad at Little Creek. We were always outside, building a treehouse or other activities like that — things most kids don’t get to do as much today. Kids are losing opportunities to figure out how to navigate and problem solve, so we’re trying to combat a lot of that. The Discovery Garden is fun, unstructured play. It’s a full body thing, mental and physical.” In research for and since the Discovery Garden opened last October, Schwent found that people who are environmentalists will talk a lot about their childhood and playing outside, where they were introduced to plants and the natural environment. “We introduce kids to plants in the garden, mostly native plants, a true representation of Edwardsville and Southern Illinois,” she noted. “Research shows that kids who spend Jill Moon|The Edge time outside develop a sense of wonder and Jill Moon|The Edge The Edwardsville Children’s Museum Discovery Garden teaches that they will care about the environment and sustainability and environmental responsibility, which is a focus of the can provide that space, and it’s safe. She joined the museum right after she had her first son, Jack, 7, then two years later twins Henry and Oliver, 5, came along. She lives in Edwardsville with her family, which includes husband Chris. “My boys are my research subjects, they try all of our programs,” Schwent noted. “There were a lot of decisions to be made in the last two years, expanding our square footage, adding programs and the Discovery Garden. I let my boys look at catalogues and circle

It offers programming for newborns through age 12, including baby sign language, preschool playgroup, story time, summer camps, Girl Scout workshops, birthday parties and much more. The museum is always updating its exhibits and programming. “I’m looking forward to the next year and all it’ll bring, and it’s been a bigger year than I could have imagined, due to community generosity,” said Schwent, who became executive

By the autumn of 2020, the museum plans to operate a satellite site inside the Nickel Plate Railroad Depot that served Edwardsville for 100 years and which the city plans to restore by then, to be known as the All Aboard project. “Our focus in this endeavor is to create another service to the children of our community through innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning taught through rotating exhibits,” Schwent said. “To pay homage to the Nickel Plate Depot’s history and original purpose, we would like to create an outdoor play space themed around trains. Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams march on
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams’ founder feels like the girls are one big family — many of whom she’s witnessed major milestones in their lives, such as proms, graduations and weddings. Victory Star’s Beth Duncan, a coach and founder of the organization in approximately 2001, ostensibly began group twirling lessons years ago in Louisiana to make a little extra money, but twirling is a passion that Duncan has enjoyed for years. She began twirling at age 10 and became one of four majorettes for two years with the Highland High School Marching Bulldogs. “It’s a dying art. Not very many people do it anymore,” Duncan said. “There’s not a lot of interest in teams. Most baton twirlers compete in solo divisions, preparing to be a feature twirler. There’s more interest in baton twirling in Texas, California and Florida.” But, Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams generate interest in three Midwest states, where they compete — Illinois, Missouri and Indiana. “I do this for fun. It’ll be a while before I retire from teaching twirling, because I love twirling, it’s my passion,” said Duncan, who is an Edwardsville School District 7 fourth grade teacher with plans to retire from the district in 2023. “Most of my teams are like family. Parents pick up girls when they can’t get a ride and have supported me through being a single mom, flat tires, surgeries, everything. “I live vicariously through my girls, they’re like daughters to me, seeing them through proms, boyfriends, graduations. This has grown into such a huge blessing,” continued Duncan, whose only child and son recently graduated from University of Missouri Columbia. “Every recital ends with ‘Amazing Grace,’ creating a cross through choreography with flag batons and billow banners. We give honor to God who has blessed us.” Duncan’s idea to teach twirling here started in District 7, for which she taught third grade the first year she taught at Columbus Elementary School. One year later she started Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams, for which she teaches on Tuesday and Thursday nights at First Baptist Church of Edwardsville. “I brought my baton to school,” recalled Duncan, the first year she started teaching twirling in Edwardsville. “My class loved it, wanted to hold my baton and they were really curious about it. Two of the girls wanted me to teach them how to twirl and they

That’s how the Victory Star Twirlers began.” Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams has two categories: twirlers, who are beginning students in third through fifth grades; and, competitive twirl teams, of which there are three, with students from grades sixth through 12th grade, though Duncan has one student who graduated from high school two years ago and has twirled with her for 12 years. The beginner classes start in September and go through recital the first weekend, on Sunday, in May. “There’s no admission for the recitals, but we ask for donations, like socks or something See TWIRL, Page 15

For All About ON THE COVER: Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams marched in last year’s annual Edwardsville High School Homecoming Parade. Longtime baton twirling teacher Beth Duncan, formerly of Edwardsville, Illinois, now of St. Louis, founded Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams, in approximately 2001. Duncan teaches private lessons through her baton twirling organization. She hired a co-coach, Andrea Gasow, two years ago. Gasow was a feature twirler for Illinois’ Monmouth College and holds seven state titles.

performed at assisted living communities, St. Mary’s Applefest, in Edwardsville, and St. Cecilia’s Community Chicken Dinner & Fall Festival, in Glen Carbon, Illinois, and for years they performed at the American Cancer Society’s Edwardsville Relay For Life’s Cancer Survivors Dinner. Most of the events are in the fall. “We’re still available all year-round, but it’s harder in the summer with vacations and a lot going on in their individual schedules,” Duncan noted. When Duncan, formerly of Edwardsville, who moved to St. Louis last year, first started teaching twirling in Edwardsville, it was as the District 7 Star Twirlers, but in 2007 she took it out of the school system and began Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams. Now in her 18th year as a fourth grade teacher at Columbus, she began with four twirling students in the district and now has 50 students, in and outside the district. Duncan especially loves twirling’s

Many of my students go on to be in the Edwardsville High School’s Color Guard,” she explained. “We don’t use music with nasty lyrics for our choreography. We’re known for being good sports and good sportsmanship. I love seeing girls in a positive way, working together.” As a new school teacher, she moved to Louisiana to teach third grade in 1986 and that’s when she taught twirling lessons to make extra money. She started an after-school program as a private teacher.
“I discovered twirling camps there and I say that’s when I really learned twirling, at age 30. That’s when I learned all the more complicated maneuvers and tricks,” she recalled. Two years ago, Duncan hired a cocoach, Andrea Gasow, who was a feature twirler for Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Gasow holds seven state titles. “My oldest teams were ready for a challenge,” Duncan said of hiring Gasow, with whom she was put in contact by a contest director. ” She teaches many of our girls solo lessons. I’m probably better at dancing moves and Andrea is good at really hard tricks. It’s been a natural progression. We make a great team, teaching together.” For more information, follow Victory Star Twirlers and Twirl Teams. Lessons for beginning twirlers in third through fifth grade begin at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday in September at the First Baptist Church, 534 St. Louis St., in Edwardsville.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Crazy good!
I like the idea of eating a healthy lunch, and it’s even better when I have individual choices to make it just the way I like it. That’s the premise behind Crazy Bowls and Wraps, located in Edwardsville Crossing Shopping Center. It does take a little time and contemplation to come up with just the right mix for you, but don’t get impatient. It’s worth it. Here’s how it works: You first decide whether you want a wrap or a bowl. I chose a fajita bowl, but within that category are several possi-
few others. My fajita bowl included red pepper, zucchini, tomato, lime, jalapeno-cilantro sauce, avocado, beans and pepperoncini.
You can get it with cheddar cheese and a warm tortilla, too,

FOOD Continued from Page 27 but I opted for no cheese and a side of tortilla chips, instead — another choice you can make. Now, the next thing you do is pick a protein to add to your bowl. Choose from hormone-free, grilled chicken breast (this was my pick), grilled organic tofu, pan-seared steak or pan-seared wild Alaskan salmon, among others. The next thing to think about is what kind of grain to add: jasmine rice, brown rice or organic quinoa, which is the one I decided to try. Or, you can take the spiralized carrots and zucchini route if you prefer. Sit down and wait for them to combine your choices into a healthy, well-balanced meal. When mine arrived, I was surprised to see there were also avocado slices In this column, Vicki on top of the beans and quinoa, Bennington shares her which wasn’t listed, but was nice love of food and all that icing on the cake (so to speak). I ordered the regular size, but involves, from special small would have been plenty. The regular portion was very generous. dishes at local and The mixture I chose was tasty and regional restaurants to filling, and I fulfilled some of my new trends and fads, and nutritional requirements, for sure. The only negative I could possibly things to try at home. say is that there were a little too Contact her at vbenmany pepperoncini, but that was nington@sbcglobal.net an easy fix. If you want to skip the meat, with comments, ideas or you can try a vegetarian lentil suggestions. bowl, served with a choice of grain, steamed mixed veggies and fresh yogurt mint sauce. But, if you like the sound of that, and you do like meat, you can choose one to add, too. Wraps are just as versatile. Choose whole wheat, tomato or flour tortilla, or you can even skip the tortilla and have yours wrapped in lettuce. Then you have to figure out which wrap you want. Should you go for the buffalo, the Caesar, the Mediterranean, the Thai or teriyaki? Salads are also on the menu, served with warm tortilla or the tortilla chips. You are sure to get your daily greens if you choose the kale and quinoa salad, served with tahini vinaigrette (made from sesame seeds), the Santa Fe salad with mixed greens, corn salsa, pico de gallo, tortilla strips, cheddar and avocado, topped with tomato ranch dressing (this sounds really good), or maybe try the multigrain quinoa salad. For beverages, there are several house-made selections. I tried the organic black tea, and as an iced-tea connoisseur — since I gave up soda three year ago, iced tea or tea drops in water is my drink of choice — I feel qualified to highly recommend it. Other drinks are house-made organic green tea and limeade, along with a selection of fountain soft drinks — or bottled water. At the table, expect to find a shaker of toasted sesame seeds mixed with sea salt to sprinkle on whatever you order to give it a little extra zip. All in all, it was a nice healthy lunch that was filling — and quick, and I had enough for lunch the next day. I love BOGO meals.
People At The Party Youngsters planted sunflowers in the Edwardsville Children’s Museum’s Discovery Garden greenhouse to take home, did yoga with On the Move Fitness, and learned about seeds with Farmer Joe and the Land of Goshen Community Market’s The Beet Box mobile farmer’s market truck, all during the museum’s May Greenhouse Day. During the Edwardsville Children’s Museum’s summer art series, Wild About Art, kids created their own masterpieces and during Camp Messy a boy played in a baby pool full of shaving cream.

‘Western Stars’ new path for Bruce Springsteen
By Gregory Katz Associated Press Bruce Springsteen, "Western Stars" (Columbia) Bruce Springsteen's new studio release breaks fresh ground for the veteran rocker, who turns his back not only on the blistering sound of the E Street Band but also abandons the haunting acoustic moods pioneered on "Nebraska" and fine-tuned on later solo efforts. After the soul-searching, confessional tone of his best-selling autobiography and soldout Broadway show, Springsteen's "Western Stars" relies on an unfamiliar orchestral approach that somewhat masks the singer and is devoid of driving beats, sax solos and rock 'n' roll tropes. Instead, he draws on the rich tradition of California-styled, pre-Beatles pop. There are hints of Roy Orbison's soaring vocals and Brian Wilson's pocket symphonies, but the lyrics are pure Springsteen. Beneath the glossy sheen are the taut narratives, introspection and ambiguous moments familiar to longtime listeners. His storytelling skills are as strong as ever, just presented in a different way. He's paying homage to an era when the single reigned, and radio airtime went a long way to determining an artist's success or oblivion, but Springsteen is not looking for No.1 hits with easy hooks. "Western Stars" is understated, without over-the-top orchestration or hyperbole. Each song stands alone as a self-contained story; taken as a whole it's a panorama of loneliness and heartbreak. The protagonists are mostly men, and mostly beaten down, but there are occasional whiffs of freedom, usually tied to the joys of the open road, that most enduring of
Brad Barket/Invision/AP Bruce Springsteen performs at the 12th annual Stand Up For Heroes benefit concert at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. Springsteen s new studio release Western Stars breaks fresh ground for the veteran rocker, who turns his back not only on the blistering sound of the E Street Band but also abandons the haunting acoustic moods pioneered on Nebraska and fine-tuned on later solo efforts. American myths. It is no accident that the album opens with "Hitch Hikin'" and this straightforward image of a loner in perpetual motion: "Thumb stuck out as I go/I'm just travelin' up the road/ Maps don't do much for me, friend/I follow the weather and the wind." It's a recurring image dating back to the days of Woody Guthrie. There are other fully-formed characters from Springsteen's imagination: the failed country music songwriter, his lyrics rejected
at every turn, the busted up B-movie stuntman held together by rods and pins, even a rundown hotel with an empty swimming pool with dandelions pushing up through the cracked concrete takes on a life of its own as a character in "Moonlight Motel." But it's not all heartbreak. There are small celebrations, too, notably in "Sleepy Joe's Café," where working men and women can find solace on the dance floor when weekend comes. It's a dreamy place where Monday
morning is far, far away, and Springsteen has placed it in the context of the postwar economic boom that powered America for decades: "Joe came home in '45 and took out a G.I. loan/On a sleepy little spot an Army cook could call his own/He married May, the highway come in and they woke up to find they were sitting on top of a pretty little gold mine." It's a nostalgic vision, yes, but those roadhouses still exist. You just have to drive a bit.
Radiohead to release stolen music for climate campaigners LONDON (AP) — Radiohead says a trove of unreleased music has been stolen for ransom. But instead of paying up, the band will release it in aid of environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood tweeted that about 18 hours of material from around the time of Radiohead's 1997 album "OK Computer" was stolen from singer Thom Yorke's minidisc archive last week. Greenwood said Tuesday that instead of paying the $150,000 demanded by hackers, "we're releasing all 18 hours on (music-sharing site) Bandcamp in aid of Extinction Rebellion." Fans can buy the music for $18 for the next 18 days. Greenwood said it was never intended Chris Pizzello | AP for release and was "only tangentially interesting." Extinction Rebellion, which stages direct-action protests against climate change, thanked Thom Yorke, left, and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead perform during the band's headlining set Radiohead "from the bottom of our hearts." at the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.
