Couple own, buy, sell at Vintage 71

EDWARDSVILLE — Chris and Janie McClellan found a perfect home for their passion when they moved Vintage 71 to Main Street into a vacant mechanic shop.

The building matched the couple’s home decor business’ aesthetic. Edwardsville’s Vintage 71 specializes in industrial and vintage style, carrying old, new, upcycled and redesigned pieces. The inventory changes constantly as the McClellans, both 30, travel from Michigan to Louisiana to Florida and Texas, with their two sons in tow. They buy unusual pieces, often times rebuilding them into completely new designs and purposes.

“Chris is always building and fixing things, making items usable or turning them into something else,” Janie said about her husband who works at their warehouse, also in Edwardsville.

Main St. Vintage 71’s in-store inventory changes constantly as the McClellans travel from Michigan to Louisiana to Florida and Texas on a regular basis. We weren’t celebrating anything in particular, but stopped by the Glen Carbon Applebee’s recently, because we know they have good food. Hey, there’s another reason. It’s just a good place to eat.

I’m still counting calories, so as I peruse the menu, I settle on a 6-ounce sirloin steak (200 calories), with garlic mashed potatoes (250 calories) and garlicky green beans (190 calories). I have a total of 640 calories, but the servings are so large, I take half of everything

home for lunch the next day. That’s a mere 320 calories per meal, and I can split the price in half, as well, as far as cost per serving. I felt like I did OK. And, the flavor was delicious, the steak juicy, and cooked medium, just as I asked. I loved the green beans, and the mashed potatoes always taste good — I don’t care who you are.

My friend went for the bacon cheddar grilled chicken sandwich. It was a lotta sandwich. With fries on the side, of which I did steal one or two, and it looked like a meal fit for a king.

Tumbling over with juicy chicken, Applewood-smoked bacon, BBQ bacon ranch, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on a brioche (my favorite) bun, it did look good. I also understand that cheese lovers (of which everyone knows I am not) would appreciate the cheddar cheese dripping down the sides.

Oh, and I forgot to add that we started the meal with the perfect margarita. I have said for a very long time that Applebee’s margaritas are well … perfect. Strangely enough, they call the top-shelf choice the “Perfect Margarita.”

Godfrey’s Regal Beagle’s “Cadillac Margarita” comes in a close second, but Applebee’s still takes home the gold.

Made with Patron Silver 100 percent Agave tequila and some other good stuff, it is brought to you in a cocktail shaker that gives you about three fills of a standard martini glass. This works out perfectly for a before, during and after dinner fill.

I found a few recipes that claim to be copycat Applebee’s perfect margarita recipes, but all were a little different, so they can’t all be Vicki Bennington|For The Edge copycats. Here’s one that tastes pretty close (still not quite the same) if you have the urge The perfect margarita. to sip on one by the pool or while sitting on the deck on a warm summer evening. A Perfect Margarita 1 1⁄4 ounces Patron Silver tequila (or a top brand of your choice. Quality tequila is key.)

1⁄2 ounce Cointreau liqueur 1⁄2 ounce Grand Marnier 1/2 ounce of olive juice 1 1⁄2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice 4 ounces prepared sweet-and-sour mix 1⁄2 ounce simple syrup Lime wedge and olive Ice Put all ingredients, except the lime wedge and olive in a shaker. EDWARDSVILLE — Proficient, purposeful and personable are a few adjectives that describe WSIE 88.7 FM The Sound’s Stephanie Lewis, account executive for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s radio station.

Those qualities also are some of the reasons why the Metro Area Professional Organization (MAPO) honored Lewis with the Professional Businesswoman Award.

MAPO is a nonprofit organization cofounded by pastor John Q. and Dorothy Owens, an educator. The organization recognizes men, women and youth who have made great contributions to their families, church, community and/or personal profession.

MAPO held its ninth annual Honors Dinner for Professionals, Principals and Progress May 25 at SIUE’s Meridian Ballroom. Lewis was one of about 30 people, including two youths, celebrated for their accomplishments.

“Stephanie has been a tremendous asset to the station,” WSIE general manager Jason Church said. “She has brought in needed revenue, made new community connections and helped strengthen the ones we already have.

She is a positive person who loves reaching out and helping others. I can think of no one better to be given this award.”

“It is through the dedication, hard work and vision of the co-founders and board members of this organization that we are able to experience firsthand the honoring of those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to impact the lives of humanity,” SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook said. “MAPO’s mission is to share and care for the homeless and hungry, and network with centers and shelters that will benefit from receiving supplies for those who are in need.”
