People Caribbean Cove open at the Zoo For The Edge Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by Mercy Kids opened at the Saint Louis Zoo on Friday, April 13 and runs through Sept. 30, 2018. Cownose rays and southern stingrays, along with bonnethead, brown-banded and white-spotted bamboo sharks glide through a 17,000-gallon warm saltwater pool located under the Edward Jones Pavilion. Guests are encouraged to dip their hands into the water and allow the animals to touch them. There will be opportunities throughout the day to feed the stingrays. These are hardy species that interact well with people in a safe and fun manner. The 20-inch deep pool includes a waterfall and a state-of-the-art life support system. The pool also has solitary space and places for the animals to rest if they choose. Zoo interpreters and educators will be on hand to help visitors and to share information about the animals, sustainable seafood and ocean conservation. “Mercy Kids loves being involved with this interactive exhibit allowing children of all ages close access to stingrays – great for encouraging curiosity in children,” said Dr. Phineas Oren, chairman of pediatrics and medical director of Mercy Children’s Hospital. “Each spring families anticipate the opening of Stingrays at the Zoo, and we are proud to partner with others who bring education and fun to children in our community.” The bonnethead shark is the smallest member of the hammerhead family. They have semi-circular heads resembling a shovel or bonnet. Bamboo sharks are sometimes called “cat sharks” because the barbels, or sensory o rg a n s , n e a r t h e i r m o u t h s

They range from 2 ½ to 4 feet in length and are bottom-dwelling species that prey on small fish, crabs and invertebrates. Visitors will not be feeding the sharks, but they may be able to touch the sharks as they swim by. Cownose rays and southern stingrays are related to sharks. Stingrays have flat bodies, long pointed fins and long whip-

Staff at the exhibit will monitor the stingrays throughout the season to ensure that the barbs stay neatly trimmed. Admission to Stingrays at Caribbean Cove is $4 per person for ages 2 and up. Children under age 2 are free. Zoo members at the Family Level and above may use their

Ray’s Grill will serve up street tacos, beverages and more. Stingrays at Caribbean Cove opened April 13 through Sept. 30 during Zoo hours. The Zoo’s spring hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 24. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, May 25 through September 3, the Zoo is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday for Prairie Farms Summer Zoo Weekends. The Zoo will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 15, for A Zoo Ado presented by Wells Fargo Advisors, the Zoo’s biennial fundraiser. The Zoo will be open until 7 p.m. on Memorial Day, May 28, and Labor Day, Sept. 3. Starting Sept. 4, the Zoo’s hours return to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tour de Stooges bike ride returning to Lebanon For The Edge Hey, knuckleheads! Come out on Saturday, May 5, 2018, better known as Stooges de Mayo, for the 21st annual Tour de Stooges bicycle ride. This bicycle ride matches beautiful roads, great food and lots of Three Stooges laughs on May 5 at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL. Advance
registration is open at tourdestooges. org. Riders can choose from 9, 13, 27, 46, 63 and 100 mile routes that all start and end at McKendree University. Rest stops are stocked with lots of goodies, and at the end of the ride is a buffet meal in the university dining hall accompanied by Three Stooges film shorts. Routes are clearly marked. There are
volunteers on the courses and patrolling the courses to make sure your ride goes smoothly, even if your bike breaks or you get a flat. Expect fresh cookies and snacks at the rest stops, as well as a chance for you and your friends to take selfies with the Stooges. There is also a photo contest for ride participants. The Tour de Stooges is a charity
event that supports Gateway East Trails, a 501(c)3 tax-deductible charity developing trails in the eastern part of St. Clair County. New this year, a portion of the proceeds go to other charity bicycle events, such as Pedal the Cause, Tour de Cure, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and other charities that riders from those charities can designate.

People Hiking through the Ozarks For The Edge One of the best ways to enjoy the scenic and natural beauty of the Ozarks is by hiking or taking a leisurely walk through the mixed terrain enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the forests, glades, meadows and prairie. There are ample opportunities for visitors to the “Best Recreational Lake” in the Nation to head off the beaten path and discover the wonders of nature. There is perh a p s n o better place to hike at the Lake of the Ozarks than at its two state parks. In total, the parks have a combined 26 different trails covering over 57 miles. Each park showcases the area’s natural history and beauty and each has its own claim to fame. Ha Ha Tonka State Park was voted the fourth-best state park in the country by readers of USA Today and has one of the most photographed features in the state: The ruins of a 19th century “castle” that was constructed on a high limestone bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring and the Niangua arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. The 3,751-acre park is Missouri’s premier showcase of karst geology and is unique in the quantity and quality of its remarkable geological features. Ha Ha Tonka’s fourteen walking trails, covering more than 15 scenic miles throughout the park, make it easy for visitors to

Hikers of all ages enjoy the variety of trails at the Lake of the Ozarks. experience the honeycomb of tunnels, rock bridges, caverns, springs, sinkholes and other natural areas. Visitors can peer into caves, climb 316 steps from the spring to the “castle” on a wooden boardwalk that circles the spring chasm, or navigate well-worn paths through the woodland area and the park’s glades. Jim Divincen, administrator for the Lake of the Ozarks Tri-County Lodging Association, enjoys spending some of
his free time hiking the trails at Ha Ha Tonka. One of Divincen’s favorite trails is the park’s longest, Tu r k e y P e n H o l l o w. This 6.5-mile hike winds through the scenic and rugged Ha Ha Tonka Oak Woodland Natural Area. “With some near 200foot climbs in elevation, this trail provides many spectacular views,” says Divincen. “The first time I finished the trail, I remember thinking, ‘wow, that was really special.’ Since then, I’ve hiked this
trail on several occasions at different times of the year and it’s an absolutely beautiful experience no matter the season or the weather.” Divincen recommends that those planning to hike Turkey Pen Hollow should allow at least three hours to complete the trail. In addition, Divincen encourages hikers of any of the trails at the Lake to be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. More details on Ha Ha Tonka’s trails can be found at mostateparks.com/park/ ha-ha-tonka-state-park. Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Missouri’s largest park consisting of 17,626 acres and also is the most visited. It is a favorite among backpackers and anglers and also features a 10-mile aquatic trail, accessible only by boat. On land, 12 trails, ranging from 0.8 of a mile to 13.5 miles, wind through the park. Lake of the Ozarks State Park also features trails that accommodate mountain bikers and equestrians for those who would like to explore the park by bicycle or on horseback. One of the park’s more popular trails is Coakley H o l l o w, a s e l f - g u i d e d i n t e r p re t i v e t r a i l t h a t measures a fairly easy distance of one mile. Coakley Hollow meanders through one of the most ecologically diverse areas in t he p ark, fe aturing s i x d i ff e re n t t y p e s o f ecosystems, including do lo mite glade s , fe ns , spring-fed streams and several types of woodlands. Interpretive
stations are located along the trail, making it easy to learn about the terrain and rare species encountered along the hike. “A great familyfriendly trail at Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the Lakeview Bend Tr a i l , ” s a y s D i v i n c e n . This 1.5-mile trail begins at the campground checkin station along State Highway 134 in Kaiser and runs along the banks of Lake of the Ozarks. “There are some splendid views of the Lake from this trail, especially in-season, from June through October, when the water level is up,” Divincen concludes. Hidden below the surface of Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Ozark Caverns, one of four show caves in the Lake area. Informative p a r k i n t e r p re t e r s l e a d hour-long, narrated hand-held lantern tours of Ozark Caverns’ underground beauty from mid-May until midS e p t e m b e r. F o r m o r e information on the trails and features of Lake of the Ozarks State Park, visit mostateparks.com/park/ lake-ozarks-state-park. Both state parks are free and open to the public year around. Each offers spectacular shows of color during the spring and fall and native plant species and wildlife thrive in all seasons. Five unique Missouri conservation areas at Lake of the Ozarks welcome hikers and feature designated walking trails,
birding areas and natural areas to explore as well. The conservation areas also are free and open year around. Tuning in Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band coming to The Fox
Ringo Starr announced he has added U.S. tour dates to the 2018 All Starr Band’s itinerary. The band will be touring Europe this June and July and now confirm an additional 20 dates throughout North America in September which will include a stop at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Friday, September 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $195, $155, $85, $70, $55, $40 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. The 2018 All Starr Band includes Colin Hay (“Who Can It be Now”, “Land Down Under”), Steve Lukather (“Africa”, “Hold The Line”, “Roseanna”), Gregg Rolie (“Black Magic Woman”, “Evil Ways”) and new member Graham Gouldman of 10cc (“I’m Not In Love”, “Things We Do For Love”). On percussion and sax is Warren Ham and on drums Gregg Bissonette. Every Ringo and His All Starr Band show features classic hit after hit, with each band member bringing to the set their most popular songs. Ringo has often called the All Starrs “the best 1-800-band in the land,” and of this coming tour he said, “There is no greater joy for me than playing great music with great musicians. Every night we get to play for all those loving people and it makes the
hassle of touring worth it. It is a Peace & Love fest and I can’t wait to see you all out there this summer and fall.” On September 15, 2017 Ringo released his 19th studio album, aptly titled Give More Love. A characteristically eclectic and positive effort that rocks with great passion featuring an inspired set of new originals as well as a few tracks that find him revisiting his illustrious past. The LA Times wrote, “That is yet another manifestation of the undiminished passion he has for writing, recording and performing.” In December 2017, it was announced by Queen Elizabeth II that Ringo had been selected for knighthood for his music and charity work and would be included in her 2018 Honours list. Throughout his career he has received nine GRAMMY® Awards, and has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- first as a Beatle and then as solo artist. Between 1970 and 2017, Ringo has released 19 solo studio records.

Kansas coming to The Fox America’s preeminent progressive rock band, Kansas, will be touring select U.S. cities this fall in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of their massive hit album Point of Know Return. For the first time in history, the band will be performing the album in its entirety. The tour will showcase more than two hours of classic Kansas music including hit songs, deep cuts, and fan favorites. Kansas will perform at The Fox Theatre in St. Louis at 8 p.m. on Oct. 20. Tickets are $125, $75, $65, $55, $45 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. In 1977, Kansas followed up the success of Leftoverture by releasing the album Point of Know Return. Containing the smash hit and million-selling single “Dust in the Wind,” along with fan favorites such as “Portrait (He Knew),” “Closet Chronicles,” and “Paradox,” Point of Know Return became the band’s greatest selling album. The album peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Album charts, reached sextupleplatinum status with more than six million
copies sold, and had three Billboard Hot 100 singles. “After the success of the album Leftoverture, it was hard to imagine when we released Point of Know Return that this album would be even bigger, but it was,” comments Kansas guitarist, and original member, Richard Williams. “From the album artwork to the song ‘Dust in the Wind,’ the album Point of Know Return is really ingrained in Rock N Roll history and even in popular culture. The past two years we have done around 80 select shows performing the album Leftoverture in its entirety. We have been blown away by the positive fan response. Our hope is that fans will enjoy this Point of Know Return Tour just as much, and hopefully even more! “ Throughout the tour, live shows will not only culminate with the album Point of Know Return performed in its entirety, but Kansas will also perform classic hits, deep cuts, and fan favorites. The band has not publicly performed some songs in the more than two-hour Kansas musical event in decades, if ever.

Music Culture Club, B-52s to appear at The Fox For The Edge G r a m m y Aw a rd w i n n i n g legends Boy George and Culture Club have revealed plans for a major 2018 U.S. headline tour with the multi-platinum selling band The B-52s. Announced today, The Life Tour: starring Boy George & Culture Club and The B-52s with special guest Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey, will visit 40-plus cities across the U.S. with a stop in St. Louis at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Thursday, September 6. Tickets are $129.50, $79.50, $49.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. “We put together an amazing show that is going to be filled with hits and fabulous memories, we know it will be hands down this summer ’s best night out,” said Boy George. About Boy George & Culture Club After more than two decades and 150 million singles & records sold globally, 2018 marks a new era for Boy George and Culture Club, as they are currently working on their first new music in 20 years. The tour setlist will celebrate some of their biggest hits plus gives fans an advance listen to new songs. Since their inception in 1981 Culture Club have sold more than 50 million albums and 100 million singles totaling 150 million worldwide, led by their classic hits, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” “Karma Chameleon,” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.” The group is fronted by British singer/ songwriter Boy George, who is universally recognized as one of music’s iconic artists of all time. George was recently presented
with the Ivor Novello lifetime achievement award in 2015 for his contribution to the music industry. As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay front man, Culture Club has set many records, including being the first band since The Beatles to have three Top Ten hits in America from a debut album. The band reunited in 2014 embarked on two worldwide sold-out tours in 2015 and 2016. Looking ahead, 2018 marks a new era for Boy George and Culture Club, as they are set to commence on a 45-date tour
this summer and are currently working on new music. Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss make up the remaining original line up set to tour. About the B-52s It is well known that the B-52s are The World’s Greatest Party Band. And nearly 40 years and over 20 million albums sold into their career, there can be no doubt as to why they remain one of rock music’s most beloved and enduring bands. Any mystery concerning the band’s longevity and ongoing appeal is
immediately solved when exposed to a B-52s concert experience. From groundbreaking songs like “Rock Lobster,” “Dance This Mess Around” and “Private Idaho,” to chart-topping hits like “Love Shack” and “Roam” and “Deadbeat Club,” to their thrilling reemergence on the pop scene with their 2008 CD Funplex, the B-52s’ unforgettable dance-rock tunes start a party every time their music begins. Formed on an October night in 1976 following drinks at an Athens, GA, Chinese restaurant, the band played their first gig at a friend’s house on Valentine’s Day 1977. Naming themselves after Southern slang for exaggerated ‘bouffant’ hairdos, the newlychristened B-52s (Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson) began weekend road trips to New York City for gigs at CBGB’s and a handful of other venues. Before long, their thrift store aesthetic and genre-defying songs were the talk of the post-punk underground. A record deal soon followed and their self-titled debut disc, produced by Chris Blackwell, sold more than 500,000 copies on the strength of their first singles, the garage rock party classic “Rock Lobster,” and “52 Girls.” The B-52s began to attract fans far beyond the punk clubs of the Lower East Side — galvanizing the pop world with their ‘streamof-consciousness’ approach to songwriting and outrageous performance. They had clearly tapped into a growing audience for new music that was much larger than anyone could have anticipated. As they take their party-music revolution into the 21st century the B-52s show no signs of slowing down, serving up their
own unique blend of music and showmanship to millions of fans around the world. About the Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey For nearly three decades fans of the Thompson Twins have been waiting for more live performances from one of the most iconic bands of the eighties. Now The Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey, with a new band, will be touring and performing the Thompson Twins hits. The Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey features Tom Bailey on vocals, keyboards, guitar, harmonica and percussion. His all-female band feature Charlotte Raven on vocals and keyboards, Amanda Kramer (The Psychedelic Furs/ Information Society) on vocals and keyboards and Paulina Szczepaniak on electronic drums. Much to TT fans delight, Bailey began writing contemporary songs again in 2016 and will be releasing a new album in 2018. The first track ‘Come So Far’ was released as a single in June 2016. Written from the perspective of a refugee in the current crisis the song is a moving portrayal of a refugee abandoning their home and moving in to the unknown. “I know where I’ve come from… don’t know where I go”. The single was released through Cooking Vinyl and all proceeds went to refugee charity Médicins S a n s F ro n t i è re s . A s p e c i a l numbered and signed 7” vinyl version of the single was also released through Pledge Music. The music and videos of the Thompson Twins became a fixture on hit radio and music television throughout the world in the eighties. They were the soundtrack of our lives. Tom Bailey is at last performing those songs again that meant so much to so many.

Movies “Borg Vs. McEnroe” still engaging By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press Let’s begin this review of “Borg Vs. McEnroe” with a huge spoiler alert. The final score of the 1980 Wimbledon men’s final between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, which takes up the climactic last third of the movie, was 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 8-6. It’s not a secret, really. And, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. This fabulous, moody film isn’t your typical jock flick where bitter rivals compete to a crowning, sweaty end. There isn’t a real victor in “Borg Vs. McEnroe “ and the points don’t prove anything. It’s less a tennis movie than a meditation on the personal costs of chasing excellence. Borg and McEnroe, seeded 1-2 at the start of the tournament, played tense, taut tennis for almost four hours, creating one of Wimbledon’s finest moments. The curly-haired youngster, chasing his first Wimbledon crown, was trying to prevent Borg from winning his fifth straight championship. Shia LaBeouf plays McEnroe and Sverrir Gudnason plays Borg and they’re both fantastic, nailing the tiny things like the way McEnroe twirled his racket or Borg’s hunched stance. But this film also requires both actors to reveal deep pools of inner turmoil and they somehow manage it with just a glance or a quiet moment. Borg and McEnroe rarely interact at all. The Wimbledon final was framed as a battle between opposites. Borg was the quiet, efficient Swede, while McEnroe was the brash, swearing Yank (“You cannot be serious!” he was prone to scream at umpires.) It was a match between the stiletto and the sledgehammer, the gentleman against the rebel, the Ice-Borg versus the Superbrat. But Ronnie Sandahl’s script and Janus Metz’ direction take us behind the stereotypes to reveal portraits of two men who actually have much in common in their loneliness and yearning. They love to win so much it hurts. Before matches, they seem to be silently awaiting their own executions. Single-mindedness gnaws at their souls, destroying friendships and tormenting them. “Nobody will remember that I won
Associated Press This image released by Neon shows Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe, left, and Sverrir Gudnason as Bjorn Borg from the film “Borg vs McEnroe.” Wimbledon four times in a row. Just that I lost the fifth time,” Borg says in anguish before the final. For his part, McEnroe lashes out at the puzzled press: “None of you understand it because none of you do it.” In its athletic duel between an agent of cool and a hothead, the film is a lot like “Rush” but only with fuzzy balls instead of race cars. In many ways, it’s more like “I, Tonya,” in its impressionistic darkness. “Borg Vs. McEnroe” says it is “inspired by true events” which gives it plenty of wriggle room when it comes to the truth. We learn that Borg was not always a
controlled, cool customer. He was a firebrand like McEnroe but had the petulance trained out of him by a coach (a superb Stellan Skarsgard) who told him to put his rage and panic into every stroke. We learn that McEnroe idolized Borg, putting his poster on his wall and wearing a headband in emulation of the older man. On the road to the 1980 finals, the filmmakers gives us flashbacks to each man’s childhood for insights. (The filmmakers get extra credit for casting Borg’s real-life son as a young Borg, who we see spending hours methodically smashing balls against a garage door.)
It also shows how people in these two men’s orbit — girlfriends, coaches and even fellow competitors — walk on eggshells around them, fearful of setting them off. To be the best in the world takes everything and leaves you slightly unhinged. Someone tells McEnroe: “It’s life and death for you. The others don’t feel the same. They’re not like you.” Once the final Wimbledon match has been won — we’re not going to say who prevailed, we’re not totally awful — the two men happen to share a private moment in a public place that is touching and cathartic.

Movies “Isle of Dogs” takes on serious subjects By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I didn’t catch “Isle of Dogs” when it rolled out three weeks ago during its initial limited release, but I was determined not to let it pass by during its nationwide expansion. Besides, at a rate of only one film every two or three years from writer/director Wes Anderson, what’s another couple of weeks? Anderson is something of an enigma. His auteurship of films is not so unique now as it was twenty years ago when “Bottle Rocket” and “Rushmore” set the independent film movement on fire, but that the filmmaker continues to churn out such marvelous and creative works now made with an ever-growing contingent of loyal repertory actors gracing them - is a true master ’s testament to talented self-marketing and a clear vision of leadership. ike 2009’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, “Isle
o f D o g s ” i s p ro d u c e d i n t h e s t o p motion animation format that remains tedious and time-consuming to create even in our computer-powered present age. It’s an absurd work of fiction with bizarre parallels to the whole of the 2018 world condition that it seems almost unbelievable to imagine its construction began to take shape over these past two years. Atari (voice of Koyu Rankin), the young ward to Megasaki City’s brutal mayor Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura), sets off for Trash Island to rescue his beloved pooch, Spots (Liev Schreiber), from the banishment that relegated all dogs to quarantine in order for Japanese citizens to avoid Dog Flu, Snout Fever, a n d t h e c h ro n i c p o p u l a t i o n b o o m that had canines threatening human beings for resources. Aiding Atari is a community of former house pets with hyper-masculine names like Boss (Bill Murray) and King (Bob Balaban). Rex (Edward Norton) is their unofficial leader, but they all really follow the
example of alpha dog Chief (Bryan Cranston, making his debut amongst the Wes Anderson Troupe’s players), the group’s lone pre-isolation stray. Duke (Jeff Goldblum) gets the best jokes, including a vaudevillian recurring bit about ‘did you hear the rumor...’. In a side plot, American e x c h a n g e s t u d e n t Tr a c y ( G r e t a Gerwig) leads a rebellion of activists to save all dogs, including her own Nutmeg (Scarlett Johansson). Her thread of the narrative is more of a military/industrial conspiracy theory fringe - lots of red yarn - and includes the political assassination of a scientific community leader. The timing of the movie’s release to the Parkland student walk-out / gun debate moment is uncanny and gives a credence here that might not have resonated so strongly if this one had hit screens in January. “Isle of Dogs” is about serious subjects that range from the immediate (student-led protest) to the deeply
personal (our gonzo culture of lavish pet ownership) to those of profound near-future concern (pandemic disease, metropolitan overcrowding, the wealth divide). On these more somber and moving notes, the movie is white hot and, at times, brilliant. When it aims to be funny, which is infrequent for an avowed comedy, it is merely droll. That might diminish it in the eyes of some fans of Anderson’s work (such as this one), but that shouldn’t take away from its position as the smartest film in release right now. I’ll couch that a bit because you have to remember that the #1 film at this weekend’s box office will be the Dwayne Johnson mutated animals adventure pic “Rampage”. I’m just glad I didn’t need to concoct a reason to skip that one. “Isle of Dogs” runs 101 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some violent images. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.
“The Rider” is a spiritual Western By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press Cinema might have a worthy successor to early Terrence Malick in Chloe Zhao, whose second feature “The Rider “ is a spiritual and poetic journey into the fading world of the Lakota cowboy, starring the real people who inspired her film. As in her first, the beautiful “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” which was also set on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Zhao transports us to the badlands of South Dakota to tell the story of a rodeo cowboy who must g i v e u p h i s d re a m a f t e r s u ff e r i n g a devastating brain trauma during competition. Brady Jandreau, a Lakota cowboy and member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, plays a fictionalized version of himself, Brady Blackburn, in the film. Jandreau was actually thrown from a horse which
then stomped on his head during a rodeo in 2016. He was in a coma for three days and now has a metal plate in his head and lingering effects from the trauma. I n “ T h e R i d e r, ” w e m e e t B r a d y soon after the incident, as he’s taking the staples out of his own skull and adjusting, poorly, to a new life of caution, away from the energy and excitement and danger of the rodeo, which he had staked his identity on. Brady lives in a mobile home with his dad, Wayne (played by his real life father Tim Jandreau), who gambles and drinks too much but has a good heart, and teenage sister Lilly (also his real sister), who has Asperger ’s Syndrome. Brady seems somewhat in denial and his friends don’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation either. “By NFL standards I should be dead,” Brady explains one night out by the campfire, drinking with his buddies.
But they respond to him like his injury is temporary, like he just needs to brush it off and power through the pain, “like a cowboy,” one says. Brady is clearly lost in this new reality. He understands more than most what life looks like after injury, often visiting his friend Lane (Lane Scott), a once daredevil who is in rehab and can no longer walk or speak after his rodeo accident. Zhao clearly has a deep affection for her subjects who have so graciously let her into their lives, and, with almost documentary rigor, expose some of the difficult truths of life with disability. But there is also an abundance of grace and beauty within the hardships too. Her use of non-actors is often a plus, but it has its limits too. Brady, while a deeply compelling and empathetic presence who from certain angles looks like a distant cousin to Chris Pratt, can appear a little blank at times when the
camera just lingers on him in closeup. He’s strongest, and most natural in his normal routine, training horses, or interacting with Lane or Lilly. Its examination of the cowboy masculinity that leads Brady and his peers to seek a life of thrills and danger only scratches the surface, but you’ll be surprised at how intoxicating and enveloping it is, right down to the on-the-nose metaphors. “The Rider” is a story of death and rebirth and cements Zhao as one of the most promising and humane filmmakers to come on the scene in some time. Like Sean Baker, she takes her camera to parts of the country that many of us rarely see and even more rarely take the time to consider. Zhao and “The Rider” are the real deal. “The Rider,” a Sony Pictures Classics release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language and drug use.” Running time: 103 minutes. Three stars out of four.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Borg Vs. McEnroe”
Let’s begin this review of “Borg Vs. Borg was the quiet, efficient Swede, while McEnroe was the brash, swearing Yank (“You cannot be serious!” he was prone to scream at umpires.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout and some nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“The Rider”
Cinema might have a worthy successor to early Terrence Malick in Chloe Zhao, whose second feature “The Rider “ is a spiritual and poetic journey into the fading world of the Lakota cowboy, starring the real people who inspired her film. As in her first, the beautiful “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” which was also set on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Zhao transports us to the badlands of South Dakota to tell the story of a rodeo cowboy who must give up his dream after suffering a devastating brain trauma during competition. Brady Jandreau, a Lakota cowboy and member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, plays a fictionalized version of himself, Brady Blackburn, in the film. Jandreau was actually thrown from a horse which then stomped on his head during a rodeo in 2016. “Lean on Pete”
There is painfully little love, except for the warm and compassionate filmmaking itself, in Andrew Haigh’s tender and heartbreaking coming-of-age drama “Lean on Pete.” In his first American film, Haigh, the British director of “45 Years” and “Weekend,” proves every bit as adept at burrowing into fragile human intimacies across a vast Western landscape as he showed in his earlier, more cloistered dramas. He makes precisely tuned, quiet movies that speak volumes about their characters. Fittingly, it’s the sound design that you notice first in “Lean on Pete.” In the opening scenes, 15-year-old Charley Thompson (Charlie Plummer) goes for a jog in his low-income Portland, Oregon, neighborhood, and the sounds of passing traffic and nearby machinery grate coarsely against Charley’s free and easy breathing. It will be a long time before he can find peace. Charley lives with his single father (Travis Fimmel), a jovial blue-collar guy who bounces from job to job and girlfriend to girlfriend. Having recently arrived from Spokane, Charley’s days, and some nights, are idle and lonely, with little to no food in the house. Plummer, who played the kidnapped Getty grandson in Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World,” gives a natural and crushingly sweet breakthrough performance. His Charley is a meek, sheepish kid yearning for a little stability. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language and brief violence.” RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Murray visits Caddyshack restaurant By NICK KINDELSPERGER Chicago Tribune
ROSEMONT, Ill. — Murray Bros. Caddyshack Restaurant opened Tuesday afternoon in suburban Rosemont. Named after the cult classic comedy film from 1980, this is the second location after the first opened in St. Augustine, Fla., in 2001. Now, normally there aren’t press conferences packed with nearly every news outlet in the city breathlessly waiting to cover the second location of a chain restaurant, especially one with a menu full of burgers and flatbreads. But one of the Murray brothers happens to be Bill Murray, one of the great comedians of our time. Dressed in a green stocking cap and sipping an orange juice, Murray made sure to shake every single person’s hand in the attendance before sitting down to take questions, only about a quarter of which had anything to do with the restaurant. While two of his brothers, Andy and Joel, also sat with him, Bill was obviously the center of attention. He did not disappoint. When Joel Murray admitted that menu items like an Italian beef and a Chicago-

style hot dog were slightly more novel in Florida, Bill Murray was quick to point out the restaurant’s short distance from O’Hare. “It’s really kind of a first-responder restaurant,” said Bill Murray. “When you land at the airport, you just jump in front of a car and say, ‘Get me to a beef sandwich. I think there is one right over there.’” Asked to describe the concept, Andy Murray tried to express it as an “extension of our living room,” an answer Bill found unpersuasive. “The fact that it is called Caddyshack means it has something to do with golf,” added Bill Murray. “That feeling of casual fun, I think is what it is.” He also went on to note that you probably didn’t want to be in the Murray household when he was young. “We had nine kids,” said Murray. “People used to joke that the food was lowered in a cage. And then it was released, and the children were allowed to attack it.” Murray agreed that he is a little surprised about the enduring appeal of “Caddyshack.” “But it really had the greatest funny people of that time in the movie,” said Murray.

Nashville hot chicken and twice baked fries from Watson’s Shack & Rail at 211 N. Neil St. in Champaign.
Watson’s Shack and Rail in Champaign By BILL ROSEBERRY For The Edge I’m always excited when I get the chance to eat in a college town. For one there are diverse choices with food and two it’s cheap. Since I get paid like a college student, less stress on the wallet is always nice. So recently when I got a chance to visit Champaign, home of the University of Illinois, I was fired up. My restaurant of choice was Watson’s Shack & Rail, located at 211 N. Neil St. in Champaign, right in the heart of the action.
Watson’s theme revolves around chicken and you can’t go wrong with that. From fried chicken, to rotisserie chicken, to chicken and waffles, to Nashville hot chicken, they have it all. If it clucks, it’s on the menu. I had the pleasure of visiting with the Intelligencer’s Matt Kamp while I was in town watching Edwardsville High’s Noah Surtin win the first individual state championship in school history. Watching all that hard work in the wrestling circle made us build up an appetite. The first thing we noticed is parking is a little frustrating. It’s mainly street parking with meters. We went on a Saturday, so luckily it was free for the weekend.
The entrance sits right along the busy street. Once you’re inside it’s a long, narrow building. There are tables down the right side and a lengthy bar on the left with tons of liquor options lined up behind it. Watson’s boasts a decent craft beer selection too, but I didn’t get a chance to test it out on my visit. They even have boozy slushies, which are said to be popular according to their website at www.watsonschicken.com. There’s a trendy western theme with the design of the place. Cowboy hats and banjos hang on the wall along with plenty of pictures and art of chickens. Continued on Page 23

Fried brussels sprouts from Watson’s Shack & Rail.
Eat
Continued from Page 22 I was excited to try the Nashville hot chicken. This is a delicacy I’d never had the pleasure of eating before visiting Watson’s. That was my main order and I gussied it up by adding pork belly. The sandwich was accompanied by twice baked steak fries. I also had to go with an appetizer, so I selected the fried brussels sprouts. Matt chose the chicken and waffles.
It wasn’t too busy on our visit, but you wouldn’t have known by the service. It was extremely slow, which didn’t put either of us in a good state by the time our food arrived. My brussels sprouts came first. They were flash fried and served with candied pecans and mustard. They had a sensational crispiness to them, but were way too salty. The pecans were almost gummy in texture too, which made them difficult to eat. The dish was OK, but I wasn’t overly enthused by it. Another long wait came before my chicken arrived. It was served on a grilled and buttered brioche bun with the
added pork belly and finished off with coleslaw. The chicken was breaded and had a dark red tint to it. It was extremely tender when I bit into it, but I quickly found out there was no fake news when they say hot. My mouth was immediately on fire. I threw on some dill pickle slices that came with it to cut the heat and it worked a little bit. The taste of the pickles p o w e re d t h ro u g h , b u t t h e coleslaw and the pork belly were non existent. And while the chicken was tender and succulent, I couldn’t really taste it either, just the heat. The savior of the meal was
the twice baked fries. They were great, super crispy and not greasy at all. There was a hearty potato taste inside the crispy shell. The seasoning with them was a little salty, but it added to the flavor also. They were the best item on my visit. Matt was much more appreciative of his chicken and waffles. He raved about the savoriness of the chicken and the apple and pecan sorghum that was drizzled over the top of them. The waffles were a little bland according to his assessment, but the rest of the dish made up for that. As for other selections on the
menu, hushpuppies, gravy fries, pork rinds and wings are a few options on the appetizer portion. Main courses include, regular fried chicken, a popcorn tofu po’ boy sandwich and chicken and andouille sausage gumbo to name a few. There’s also a separate brunch menu that can be found on their website. Between the ups and downs with the food and the super slow service, neither of us were too satisfied with our visit to Watson’s Shack & Rail. With plenty of options in Champaign, if you’re in town I’d say go somewhere else when you gotta eat.

African-American female brewer finds her rhythm By CLARE DIGNAN The New Haven Register NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — As the owner of Alisa’s House of Salsa on Whalley Avenue in New Haven, Alisa Bowens-Mercado has rhythm. Now she has put that into making beer. Bowens-Mercado is the first AfricanAmerican woman in Connecticut to brew beer and one of only a handful across the country. As the owner of Rhythm Brewing Co., she created the unfiltered lager, Rhythm, at Overshores Brewery in East Haven, celebrating her second canning day Friday. “Getting into this really is a passion,” Bowens-Mercado said. She’s diversifying the industry as one of the few women and few people of color brew craft beer anywhere in the U.S. “I’m tapping into a national thirst of what the craft beer industry is lacking.” When the canning and labeling begins, Bowens-Mercado turns up Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” for good luck. And it’s working, she said.
Rhythm is in its second run after selling out 100 cases in only two weeks, which marks a very well-selling beer, Overshores Brewery lead production brewer Mike Dryburgh said. Overshores is a collaborative brewery that serves up its own brand but also works with other brewers producing their recipes. Overshores works with breweries such as Hulls, Armada, Charter Oak and more. Rhythm Brewing Co. specializes in producing unfiltered beer, which means “keeping the good stuff in,” BowensMercado said. Most mass-produced beers are filtered and pasteurized. The filtration removes the yeast, giving the beer a bright clarity, while the pasteurization “cooks” the beer to kill any microorganisms that might’ve gotten through the filtration. But filtration can go too far by stripping away “the natural goodness of beer,” according to Beer Magazine, and “over-filtering can take out color, hop bitterness and proteins that add body and help form the beer ’s head.” U n f i l t e re d b e e r s , s u c h a s R h y t h m ,
might be seen as more natural or even healthier than filtered beer. Bowens-Mercado describes her beer as having a “slight bite” and it “makes you want more.” “It has a great flavor profile,” Dryburgh said. “It’s a really good lager.” He said a lot of people who drink lagers are drinking the big industry brands such as Samuel Adams and Budweiser and “To do a craft lager and stay true to the form and put your own twist is fun and it’s ambitious.” Bowens-Mercado said her product “gets back to basics.” “With our brand, we wanted to go back to classic, with the logo and everything and make a timeless beer people won’t get sick of,” she said. Bowens-Mercado got into the craft beer scene as a way to pay homage to her grandmothers, who she remembers often drinking beer as they sat together
talking. “More people are looking for something that’s not mass produced,” Dryburgh said. “They want something local and people are pulling into their own community.” A trend in the craft beer industry is brewing IPAs, but Bowens-Mercado was insistent that she wanted to make a lager. As she researched the industry and a way to make a lager, she looked for someone to guide her in the process, which was hard since not many women are doing it, she said. But eventually, she found Overshores, which took her vision and brewed it into a reality. Bowens-Mercado is looking to make an unfiltered light lager as her next beer and as she grows her brewing company, she hopes to open doors for other women.

Dining Delights The Edge's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Capitalist Pig 2727 S. 12th St. Soulard Have you ever wander what it would be like to eat inside a jail cell? Well this place will give you that opportunity, only you get to leave when you’re done and you don’t have to wear an orange jump suit. This barbecue joint is housed in an old jail and offers a pretty neat experience. The brisket is good stuff and you definitely can’t go wrong with the cornbread. The 10-ounce smoked brisket and eggs is really good off of the Sunday brunch menu. It offers brisket with a chili hollandaise sauce a pair of poached eggs, some yummy fried potatoes and smoked balsamic onions with a corn bread muffin to boot. They are only open during the day Wednesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so make sure to get there early. Charleville Brewing Company & Tavern
2101 Chouteau Ave. St. Louis Craft beer lovers who are looking for some good brews to go with some good grub will love this place. It features a big bar with plenty on tap and a spacious area for groups to visit for dinner. If you’re having a few beers and want something a little heavy to go with it, check out the wake and bake
burger. It’s a beef patty topped with smoked pork belly, a sunny side up egg and hollandaise aioli on a brioche bun and accompanied with French fries. For beer lovers, order the box of chocolates. It’s a Belgian style quadruple ale that tastes like a chocolate candy bar. Unfortunately it’s a seasonal beer, so not always available, but there’s plenty of other stuff to choose from.

EMPLOYMENT Web and Social Producer If you naturally write in a fresh, witty voice, while respecting objective journalism, legal issues, and copyrights, this may be the career move for you. If you post to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram for work, know SnapChat, Periscope, Ask.fm, and Vine, this may be the career move for you. If you can bust out straight breaking news quickly and accurately while simultaneously monitoring trends on Tweetdeck, and chatting with your boss on AIM -- and do it all with a smile -- this may be the career move for you. Play a central role in growing the digital reach of three Midwestern properties of Hearst Newspapers, one of the largest media companies in the world. The Illinois group -- comprised of The (Alton) Telegraph, The (Edwardsville) Intelligencer and The Journal-Courier -- is looking for an innovative and experienced web producer/social producer to join our team. The ideal candidate will proactively self-assign stories that are on the verge of going viral, making sure all three sites and their corresponding social media presences are ahead of the day's news. They are an idea generator with strong social roots. She or he must be able to create or curate stories as needed while managing social media analytics and best practices, and bringing innovative multimedia, multi-platform, multi-social network ideas to a larger team. What will you do? * Create daily stories, photo galleries, and videos for the three websites, myjournalcourier.com, theintelligencer.com and thetelegraph.com * Work with a team of reporters and editors as needed to gather information, as well as coach other journalists in best practices for leveraging online presence * Help further establish the websites as “the brand” for complete and accurate local news coverage. * Monitor the three sites, as well as other Hearst sites, competitors' sites and national sites, for what's going on locally and nationally with an eye on how it can be repackaged for our platforms * Monitor website analytics to help identify issues of importance to both print and digital readers * Monitor trending topics from social media to inform editorial decisions * Bring fresh ideas to daily content creation both for website stories and how to promote them on social media, such as innovation, special projects, etc. * Manage a 24-hour news cycle -- meaning early mornings, late nights, holidays and weekends are sometimes part of the job What will it take to be successful? * Innate sense of what clicks and what will be trending later in the day * Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks * Demonstrated command of editing and understanding how to produce superior content across multiple platforms * Blogger or journalism background * Social media native, familiar with algorithms, audiences, and insight * Experience running social ads * Team player who works collaboratively * Initiative, drive, passion * Bachelorʼs degree in journalism Preferred Qualifications: * Experience working with content management systems and online platforms * 2 yearsʼ experience in digital space * Comfort with video, video editing, and photography is a plus Join our Team!
