People Elliotts keeping business in the family By BILL TUCKER For The Edge E D WA R D S V I L L E – A s a jeweler, Tom Elliott has spent the last 43 years looking at some pretty impressive rocks. But the lure of some others specifically those that form the Grand Canyon - have called him into retirement. Now Tom is in the process of turning over Elliott Fine Jewelers to his son, Doug. The business is conducting the Passing of the Torch Sale at the shop at 1405 Troy Road to mark the transition. To m e n t e re d t h e j e w e l r y business in 1975, but with his wife Jan retiring last month, he’s decided to join her. “It’s hard for me to let her stay home and for me to get up and go to work,” Tom said. So he’s stepping aside, ready to focus on some other aspects of life. Tom will take care of his 99-year-old aunt as well as help Jan take care of her parents. And he’s planning on hitting the road. “We’re wanting to do some traveling, go out West,” Tom said. “I’ve never seen Yellowstone. I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon. That’s what I’m hoping to do, some traveling, see the United States.” While the new experiences will be welcome, Tom admits he’ll miss the day-to-day interaction with his customers. “I’ll miss the people, working with the people. I’ve been doing this 1975. I stated Elliott Jewelers in 1990 on Main Street,” he said. “In 2005, to right now, we‘ve been here, which is a good move for us.” Tom has witnessed numerous changes, both in his business and the city in which he’s located

his business. Through it all, he never lost sight of what kind of business he wanted to operate. “I’ve been in Edwardsville since ’75. There’s been a lot of changes, a lot of growth. It’s been a good run. We’ve kind of outlived a lot of the jewelry stores that have come and gone.,” Tom said. “Our customers have been very important to us and we try to maintain a Christian store. I’m thankful to Almighty God for

my health and my strength and giving me 77 years. But it’s time. We just felt like it was time to retire and move on.” The Passing the Torch Sale will be the last for Tom, who said Doug will be better able to handle the coming challenges. “The sale is Passing the Torch, I’m passing it to my son, who does all the repair work here in the store, a lot of design work.,” Tom said. “He can take it to a different level than I’ve

been able to. They do a lot with computers now. Things change.” Tom said, with obvious pride, that he’s handing Doug a debtfree store. For his part, Doug said he doesn’t envision any major changes to the business. “Continue doing what we’re doing. It’s been successful,” Doug said. “Nothing really n e w, m a y b e s o m e m i n o r reconstruction with the sign. Keeping the same name, nothing

different, still doing all the repairs . . . the clock repairs, the jewelry repairs, the watch repairs.” And while Doug will, in fact, take over the business, he doesn’t expect his father to be completely uninvolved, even after those trips out West. “He’ll be around the house a while until he gets kicked out, then he’ll either have to go to breakfast or come here,” Doug joked.

People planner Redbird Express returns to St. Clair Square

The St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD) announced the return of the popular Redbird Express bus service from St. Clair Square for the 2018 St. Louis Cardinals season. Bus service will be available for all St. Louis Cardinals home games. Parking in Downtown St. Louis for games can range from $15-40 or more. In addition, St. Clair County Transit takes the stress out of game day traffic, bridge construction, parking, gas expenses and more, by allowing game goers to sit back and enjoy the ride to and from the game. Details on the 2018 Red Bird Express are available at www.ssctd.org. Busses will depart from St. Clair Square, near the water tower, 2.5 hours before game

time as busses fill, with the last bus leaving one hour before the game begins. Fares are currently $5.00 per adult, and $2.00 for children ages 2 thru 12. Early departure from Busch Stadium is available once the bus fills up. “This program has always been popular with our Cardinals fans. It is so easy to get to Ball Park Village early enough to enjoy a beverage and a meal before the game, and the bus will be there, right where you left it, after the game,” said Chairman of St. Clair County Transit District Board Richard Meile. Founded in 1981, St. Clair County Transit District oversees 11 MetroLink stations and 17 bus routes in St. Clair County, IL. Artistic adventures Harry Potter Film Concert Series returning

The Harry Potter Film Concert Series returns to Powell Hall with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Concert on September 14, 15 and 16, 2018, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Concert on April 12, 13 and 14, 2019, the fourth and fifth films in the Harry Potter series. The SLSO will perform the magical scores from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix while each film plays in high-definition on a 40-foot screen. CineConcerts and Warner Bros. Consumer Products announced the Harry Potter Film Concert Series, a new global concert tour celebrating the Harry Potter films, in 2016. Since the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in Concert in June 2016, more than half a million fans have enjoyed this magical experience from J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, which is scheduled to include over six-hundred performances across more than 38 countries worldwide through 2018. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter is mysteriously entered into the Triwizard Tournament, a grueling contest among three wizarding schools in which he confronts a dragon, water

demons and an enchanted maze only to find himself in Lord Voldemort’s grasp. All will change when Harry, Ron and Hermione leave childhood forever and face challenges beyond their imagining. Winning both the International Film Music Critics AWARD (IFMCA) and ASCAP Film and Television Music Award for the score, the rich tapestry of music composed by Patrick Doyle (Brave, Hamlet, Sense and Sensibility) brought fresh emotional gravitas with darker melodic undercurrents as Harry Potter, Ron, and Hermione face these new adventures. Tickets go on sale April 18, 2018 at 10:00am via www.slso.org and 314-5341700 for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Concert and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Concert. “Kodachrome”

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

The characters in the new film “Kodachrome ,” a goodnatured if by-the-numbers road trip and relationship drama with Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen and Ed Harris, are enchanted by the analog. Music is to be listened to on vinyl. Maps are to be read, and not by Siri, to get to a destination. Photographs are best on film. And face time is better than FaceTime when it comes to making amends for decades of bad behavior. It’s a little funny, then, that Netflix is ultimately the reason that audiences will be able to see “Kodachrome.” The company acquired the indie at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and is releasing it to streaming customers on Friday. While it’ll certainly mean the biggest possible audience for “Kodachrome,” there’s also some irony in a movie about the death of a type of film being released on a service that more than a few are worried will be the death of another kind of film. Harris, who plays a famous photojournalist rushing against the clock to get some forgotten rolls developed, even has a heartfelt monologue about how “nothing beats the real thing” and how digital photographs are basically just “electronic dust.” His character doesn’t get into the topic of digital movies and streaming services, but, it’s so on the nose, it can’t help but trigger the thought. Not that the look of the movie is even all that classical or “analog” anyway. The images are smooth and pretty, but sanitized and, well, digital. But the intentions are sweet. RATED: Not Rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Super Troopers 2”

A goofy sense of inconsequentiality is an underappreciated trait in comedies. There’s an abiding charm to movies so low in their stakes and so loose in their order that they feel as if at any moment they might fall apart. Films like “Caddyshack” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” are good examples, but outside of the loose absurdities of some of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s films (“Step Brothers,” ‘’Anchorman”) most of today’s big-screen comedies are more conceptually tidy. The comedy collective Broken Lizard, though, are pupils of the “Caddyshack” school. They are in it mainly to amuse themselves, and smoke a lot of weed in the process. It’s a laudable mission. Fittingly timed to open in theaters on 4/20 is “Super Troopers 2,” Broken Lizard’s sequel to their minor cult hit, the 2001 original that introduced the troupe, formed in the ‘90s at Colgate University, of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. They went on to make a handful of other films and their director, Chandrasekhar, has helmed episodes of notable TV sitcoms (“Arrested Development,” ‘’Community”), but “Super Troopers” remains their best-known (and easily their best) film, one propelled largely by its popularity on home video. “Super Troopers” deserved the love that came its way. It’s about a station of prank-loving, drug-taking of Vermont highway patrolmen (all played by the Broken Lizard gang) who couldn’t take their jobs less seriously RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “crude sexual content and language throughout, drug material and some graphic nudity.” RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Rampage”

Usually paired with smaller companions like Kevin Hart or Moana, Dwayne Johnson is for once the diminutive one in “Rampage,” a hopelessly bland and bizarrely self-serious monster movie. Johnson plays primatologist Davis Okoye in Brad Petyon’s adaption of a classic 1986 arcade game. Naturally, Okoye has some covert military history but — like so many highly trained international commandos — he’s now working at the San Diego Zoo. His time is especially focused on a hulking albino gorilla named George. They are pals, Davis and George, who fist-bump and play pranks on one another. The two are actually a winning pair, but “Rampage,” unfortunately, isn’t the Rock-and-monkey buddy comedy (“The Guerrilla and the Gorilla”?) we might crave. “Rampage” is professional-looking, thanks to the well-integrated effects artistry of Weta Digital. We have become spoiled, perhaps, by affecting computergenerated primates thanks to the “Planet of the Apes” franchise. But George (played with motion capture by Jason Liles) still holds his own in the monkey-movie kingdom. And Johnson, so recently in the jungle for “Jumanji,” remains a truly indefatigable movie star capable of carrying even the most half-baked of premises with colossal charisma. “Rampage” would surely sink a less sturdy action star. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of violence, action and destruction, brief language and crude gestures.” RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies “I Feel Pretty” is a winner By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge If you believe everything you read about movie comedy, including many things I’ve written in this space over the years, you would think the genre was all but dead. In some ways that’s true. Pure comedy films are no longer the top-shelf draw they o n c e w e r e . L i k e this weekend’s terrific “I Feel Pretty”, “Bridesmaids” featured an ensemble female cast (Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy in her b reako u t rol e) a n d s o m e g o o fy shenanigans that were decidedly unladylike. M o r e i m p o r t a n t l y, to this critic, it had a genuine and

sweet relationship between the film’s lead and a gangly new guy (the t re m e n d o u s I r i s h e n t e r t a i n e r C h r i s O’Dowd). “I Feel Pretty” is its karmic cousin and that’s a good thing for all of us. T h e p re m i s e o f “I Fe e l P re tty” is that someone can change everything about their life without really changing anything at all. Rather than being a mantra supplied by some New Age shaman, the sage advice is a great tag line for self-esteem and the confidence it surely takes to be a fullfledged adult in our sometimes harsh modern society. Renee Bennett (Amy S c h u m e r ) i s o n e o f t h o s e i n s e c u re types. She’s sweet and funny and loyal to a fault. But she’s chubby and loud and suffers a bad hair day every day. It’s d e s t ro y e d h e r s e l f - w o r t h a n d o n l y her similarly situated friends (Aidy Bryant, Busy Philipps) keep her from totally falling apart. It all changes - like they claim it does for many of

their clients - at a SoulCycle class. When she falls from her bike, the blow to her head causes Renee to believe she’s somehow been transformed into the most beautiful woman in the world. The silliness is fun and free flowing. Strangers are agape over her behavior, a show of newly-imbued confidence that is equal parts charming and headshaking. It gives her the motivation to ask guys out and apply for a cool new job at her company, Lily LeClaire Cosmetics, where she’s been toiling away in their anonymous online division. With her “new self” Renee becomes besties with her boss (the r a d i a n t M i c h e l l e Wi l l i a m s ) , Av e r y, a powerful CEO who can’t flex her leadership skills because of a Judy H o l l i d a y - i n - ” B o r n Ye s t e rd a y ” h i g h v o i c e . To g e t h e r t h e y f o rg e a n e w makeup line for budget-conscience everyday shoppers. Sounds hokey, right? Renee wakes u p w i t h a h e a d i n j u r y a n d ro c k e t s

to the top of everyone’s list? Sure! But this is Hollywood. Instead of being ugly or malicious, Renee’s growth benefits her friends and others equally, including glamorous acquaintance Mallory (Emily Ratajkowski), who suffers being attracted to hurtful men. Best for Renee, though, is the ease with which she meets Ethan (Rory Scovel, this film’s O’Dowd), a timid, skinny IT guy at CNN. He likes her enthusiasm, she likes that h e u l t i m a t e l y l o v e s w h o s h e re a l l y is. There are body-positive messages sprinkled throughout the laughs. M e n w i l l re a c t v e r y d i ff e re n t l y t o those messages than female viewers, but it will resonate with all. Being comfortable in one’s skin is a universal goal to which we all aspire. “I Feel Pretty” runs 110 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sexual content, some partial nudity, and language. I give this film three stars out of four.

“Super Troopers 2” years in the making By JAKE COYLE Associated Press A goofy sense of inconsequentiality is an underappreciated trait in comedies. Fittingly timed to open in theaters on 4/20 is “Super Troopers 2,” Broken Lizard’s sequel to their minor cult hit, the 2001 original that introduced the troupe,

formed in the ‘90s at Colgate University, of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. They went on to make a handful of other films and their director, Chandrasekhar, has helmed episodes of notable TV sitcoms (“Arrested Development,” ‘’Community”), but “Super Troopers” remains their bestknown (and easily their best) film, one propelled largely by its popularity on home video. “Super Troopers” deserved the love that came its way. It’s about a station of prankloving, drug-taking of Vermont highway patrolmen (all played by the Broken Lizard gang) who couldn’t take their jobs less seriously despite the efforts of their exasperated but lovable chief, played by the excellent Brian Cox — an 800-lb gorilla of an actor in a pleasantly featherweight comedy. It was the movie’s fans that — through a surprisingly successful crowd-funding effort — pushed “Super Troopers 2” into existence, 17 years later. Such gaps have been

death to comedies (“Zoolander 2” comes to mind) but nothing so dramatic befalls this still low-budget, still low-stakes sequel. The Broken Lizard guys remain amusing and likable. Their fondness for running gags hasn’t slowed down. And they can still get a lot of mileage out of guys with guns and mustaches in uniforms acting stupid. But while “Super Troopers 2,” also directed by Chandrasekhar and written by the troupe, may be just enough to satiate any remaining die-hards, it’s not likely to convert many new moviegoers to their syrup-swilling, “meow”-ing ways. The new film finds the group, having lost their police jobs after something ominous referred to as “the Fred Savage incident,” recruited from their contracting and lumberjack gigs to patrol an area of Quebec that has been newly discovered, from an old map, to be rightfully Vermont’s. They are sent across the border, with Cox’s chief in tow, to take over policing the soon-tobe annexed territory. They are the face of

the Canadians’ new, unwanted American overlords. No one will say it’s the most original of plots, nor will anyone be much surprised at the avalanche of Canadian jokes to follow. Most are flat (including a disconcerting number of metric system gags) but some — like their pseudo-French impersonation of Mounties — are winning. Rob Lowe drops in to play a bordello-owning Canadian mayor, the Montreal-born Emmanuelle Chriqui (“Entourage”) co-stars as a Frenchspeaking cultural attache and Lynda Carter returns as the Vermont governor. In the time since “Super Troopers,” the humor to be found in unprofessional police officers has perhaps waned. But “Super Troopers 2,” retreating northward to the land of Canuck puns, has little interest in commenting on police brutality or much of anything political besides its underlying argument that a little criminality, but not too much, in life is good. They are antiauthoritarian authorities.

Tuning in spotlight. Born in 1976, The Babys took on the classic ro c k w o r l d h e a d f i r s t with a full stage musical experience, giving rise to what quickly came to be known as their ‘signature sound’. Billboard chartclimbers like “Every Time I Think of You”, “Midnight Rendezvous” and “Isn’t It Time” helped to launch them into worldwide recognition while also helping to carve out their permanent place in music history. After a successful run from 1976-1981, THE BABYS disbanded, but are thrilled to be back after a t h re e - d e c a d e a b s e n c e ! Co-founders Tony Brock (drums) and Wally Stocker (lead guitar) launched a nationwide talent search at the end of 2012 to find the right lead vocalist, additional guitarist, keyboardist and iconic Babettes to capture and complete the full richest of the classic sound of THE BABYS, which they found in lead vocalist/bassist John Bisaha, guitarist Joey Sykes, keyboardist Louis Middleton and The Babettes; Holly Bisaha and Elisa Chadbourne. Originally called the

Back by popular demand, Rock Of The ’70s returns with an all-new line-up! It promises to be an evening of St. Louis classics as April Wine, The Babys, Savoy Brown, and the Pat Travers Band share the stage for one night only. Don’t miss what promises to be an amazing night of rockn-roll – Friday, October 5 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. April Wine is a Canadian rock band formed in 1969. According to the band, they chose the name ‘April Wi n e ’ s i m p l y b e c a u s e members thought the two words sounded good together. The band went on to release more than twenty albums and record St. Louis favorites such as “I Like To Rock.” “Sign Of The Gypsy Queen,” “Roller,” and “Just Between You And Me.” April Wine has forged a live performance reputation which still sees them drawing devoted crowds across Canada and around the world more than forty years after taking their first steps into the hard rock

Savoy Brown Blues Band, this group can rightly take credit for cutting the farewell anthem of the 1960s British blues boom, in the form of a modern blues aptly titled “Train to Nowhere.” One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today. Since the critically acclaimed 1976 debut album featuring his own brand of high-quality seventies guitar rock and roll, Pat Travers has gone on to deliver melodic e i g h t i e s ro c k , a b l u e s period throughout most of the nineties, noted performances with various power trio’s during the first few years of the new Millennium, and a fullb l o o d e d re t u r n t o t h e trademark Pat Travers Band sound as he entered

his fifth performing and recording decade. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www. metrotix.com. To c h a rg e b y p h o n e call MetroTix at 314-5341111. For help purchasing accessible seating, please call The Family Arena ADA Hotline at 636-896-4234.

The grades range from Prime & Choice to Select and even “Commercial” which is often used to make mass-produced ground beef. The grading system is intended to inform us of the amount of marbling and flavor. Additionally, you may have seen “Certified”, which means nothing about the grade, just that it is an Angus cow you’re buying usually at a premium. Take the mystery out of grocery store labeling. Tuning in Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band coming to The Fox

Ringo Starr announced he has added U.S. tour dates to the 2018 All Starr Band’s itinerary. The band will be touring Europe this June and July and now confirm an additional 20 dates throughout North America in September which will include a stop at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Friday, September 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $195, $155, $85, $70, $55, $40 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. The 2018 All Starr Band includes Colin Hay (“Who Can It be Now”, “Land Down Under”), Steve Lukather (“Africa”, “Hold The Line”, “Roseanna”), Gregg Rolie (“Black Magic Woman”, “Evil Ways”) and new member Graham Gouldman of 10cc (“I’m Not In Love”, “Things We Do For Love”). On percussion and sax is Warren Ham and on drums Gregg Bissonette. Every Ringo and His All Starr Band show features classic hit after hit, with each

band member bringing to the set their most popular songs. Ringo has often called the All Starrs “the best 1-800-band in the land,” and of this coming tour he said, “There is no greater joy for me than playing great music with great musicians. Every night we get to play for all those loving people and it makes the hassle of touring worth it. It is a Peace & Love fest and I can’t wait to see you all out there this summer and fall.” On September 15, 2017 Ringo released his 19th studio album, aptly titled Give More Love. A characteristically eclectic and positive effort that rocks with great passion featuring an inspired set of new originals as well as a few tracks that find him revisiting his illustrious past. The LA Times wrote, “That is yet another manifestation of the undiminished passion he has for writing, recording and performing.” In December 2017, it was announced by Queen Elizabeth II that Ringo had been selected for knighthood for his music and charity work and would be included in her 2018 Honours list.
