One-man play takes a fun look at serious science

By Julia Biggs jbiggs.edwi@gmail.com EDWARDSVILLE — If you’re old enough, you remember “M*A*S*H’s” BJ Hunnicutt and then, as now, the actor in that role cuts no corners in representing concerned citizens’ issues. In Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Arts & Issues’ one-man play, “Dr. Keeling’s Curve,” Dr. Charles David Keeling (1928-2005) is played by actor and activist Mike Farrell, best known for his role as Hunnicutt in the television series “M*A*S*H.” Farrell, who helped develop the play, brings to life the quirky and brilliant Keeling, who created the “Keeling Curve,” a definitive and iconic illustrative chart showing the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels from 1958 to the present. The story combines Keeling’s personal journey, which he took virtually with atmospheric scientists through their collective insights recorded hundreds of years earlier. The scientists’ discoveries laid the foundations for Keeling’s own extraordinary modern-day work. Keeling’s research of CO2 gave the first early warnings to the world about climate change. In 1955, Keeling first measured carbon dioxide content in the Earth’s atmosphere. For the next 50 years he continued to measure CO2, despite U.S. government agencies’ indifference and opposition of his research. The play also explains the work of JeanBaptiste Joseph Fourier (1768-1830), a French mathematician and physicist, whose obsession with the properties of heat led to an understanding of the greenhouse effect. Fourier is best known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series and their applications to problems of heat transfer and vibrations. The Fourier transform and Fourier’s law are also named in Fourier honor. Also, the play looks at Svante August Arrhenius (1859-1927), a Swedish scientist, who proved a link between CO2 and global warming. Originally a physicist, but often referred to as a chemist, Arrhenius was one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. “Dr. Keeling’s Curve” paints very human portraits of Fourier, Arrhenius and other great scientists. Author Spencer Weart of the award-winning “The Discovery of Global,” noted in a review of “Dr. Keeling’s Curve,” that the play gives a human face to what might otherwise

Actor and activist Mike Farrell be a dry story. “It makes the science behind our global warming problem crystal clear,” Weart wrote. “Both thoughtful and funny, this play shows

how science can be fun….and deadly serious.” Another reviewer, Richard Guzman, of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, wrote that “’Dr.

Keeling’s Curve’ shows how one man can make a difference in the world….a heavy

Actor gifts film, TV mementos to Oakland U

OAKLAND, Mich. (AP) — Actor Curtis Armstrong is donating collectables from his 30-year career in film and television to the archives of his alma mater, Oakland University. Twenty boxes filled with annotated scripts, behind-the-scenes photos, contracts, actor interviews, press clippings, and diary entries will be housed at the school, The Oakland Press reported . Armstrong graduated from Oakland University in 1975 and quickly made a name for himself in the movies "Risky Business" and "Revenge of the Nerds." He has appeared in dozens of TV shows, including "Moonlighting," ''New Girl" and "Supernatural." He has 150 credits noted on his IMBD profile, the university says. "From the moment I got on a stage, I started keeping stuff," Armstrong said. "It began with sentiment and then became this weird psychological obsession of keeping things. This is the place I learned my craft. I thought this could be helpful for students." The materials, which include an original copy of the first script for "Risky Business," will be available for public viewing at the Kresge Library, and will be used in classes at the university.

"It's a unique collection," said Dominique Daniel, coordinator of archives and special collections. "These materials document his career from his time as a student, it helps us better understand our own history and it's significant because Curtis has had a very successful and varied career." It's the annotated scripts that Armstrong said will likely make the most impact on people looking to study the craft. Notepads of character profiles from every role he's played will be accessible for young actors to read. "That's part of the process I learned here. It doesn't matter how big or small the role, you always write out a bio," he said. Oakland University intends to digitize parts of the collection, such as old VHS tapes and photos. Natalie Broda/The Oakland Press via AP Curtis Armstrong, an actor, producer and writer, holds some of the 30-years of memorabilia from his career in film and television at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. Armstrong, an alumnus of the university, has donated the material to Oakland University's archives.

Often overlooked categories of film worth examining

Oscar-nominated documentary, animated shorts really deliver By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist Since you presumably asked, we’re now only three days away from the Academy Awards. That means Oscar Quest 2018 is in its most serious phase, the one when I’ve forsook current releases. My total deficit of remaining nominated movies took a big knock downward (to 15) with a presentation of short-subject films in the last two weeks during a rainy day in St. Louis. The bill of fare featured a meaty entree of Oscar-nominated documentary short subjects and dessert of the animated programming. ShortsTV, a cable and satellite television channel dedicated to short film, including Academy Award-nominated short films, and movie theater chains across the country (Landmark Theatres in particular) deserve a tremendous round of applause for getting these delightful little gems out in front of moviegoers’ eyes — more eyes, in fact, than any year before as box office figures indicate. My own fondness for this category also grows each year. Documentary filmmaking, as I’ve been telling you forever, is a refined artform that is getting better and more engaging all the time. I credit a lot of this to the “Can you believe it?” factor of non-fiction, but most of that impression is based on feature-length shows that dive deeply into their subject matter. Shorts don’t have that time to build your interest; they have to get your attention from their opening frames. Three of this year’s

nominees do just that. “Black Sheep” hooks you in with the image of a Nigerian boy, from the United Kingdom, bleaching his skin and wearing blue contact lenses in order to fit into his new neighborhood. “End Game” has a montage of several terminally ill hospice patients. “Period. End of Sentence” is about the manufacturing of feminine hygiene products by poor rural girls in India. Of the three, I have to tell you that Netflix’s “End Game” was the most overwhelming. Palliative care is very closely examined in a few specific cases tied into and around the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco, California, and it’s infeasible to watch this with an impartial eye. Every viewer will confront mortality for themselves or for their family in some way, and that’s why this one will get my vote. Also nominated: “A Night at the Garden” (still as unimpressive as I found it last week) and “Lifeboat” about the ongoing crisis of refugees who fail to successfully cross the Mediterranean. Animated films are great, but why they’re great, it needs a two-fold stick to measure a distinction. Are they animated better than other animated films? Or, are they better made stories than any narrative work? I’m unqualified to address the aesthetic nature of the medium, but I know that I’ll vote for “Into the Spider-Verse” in the feature category because of its slick look. I can also tell you that the two shorts that I liked best were because of the merit in their setting and

Oscar statuettes appear backstage at the Oscars inLos Angeles. Responding to widespread backlash to the fact that four Oscars will be presented during commercial breaks at the 91st Academy Awards, the film academy has issued a statement reiterating that all Academy Award winners will still be included in the broadcast on Sunday, Feb. 24. dialogue. “One Small Step” tackles the fleeting nature of life, in face of impending death, by the collection of shoes we wear throughout our lifetime. “One Small Step” does it eloquently. My favorite is “Animal Behaviour,” in which an excited canine psychiatrist meet regularly with five other animals (a raging ape, a food-addicted pig, a cat that can’t stop cleaning herself, etc.) to discuss their inner angst in a group therapy session. “Animal Behaviour” is funny, smart and descended into complete chaos in less than 10

minutes — it’s golden. Also nominated: “Bao” (which Pixar screened before “The Incredibles 2”), “Late Afternoon,” about a dementia patient, and “Weekends,” which I think has the most artistic animation. The Oscar-nominated documentary and animated shorts are not collectively rated. They vary in content, including brief language, mild violence and thematic material. The combined running time, without intermission, is 224 minutes, with each lasting between seven and 28 minutes. I give the overall program four stars out of four.

recording labels, songwriters and performers. The acquisitions are about “expanding our mission from just being about music to being about all of audio and being the world’s leading audio platform,” CEO Daniel Ek said in an interview on CNBC on Wednesday. The company didn’t disclose terms of its podcasting deal. Spotify, which is based in Stockholm and went public in April 2018 , charges $10 a month for its “premium” ad-free music service. It also offers a free ad-supported service. Apple has become Spotify’s primary rival since the tech giant launched its own music streaming service in 2015. But although it has

been outgunned financially, Spotify has been able to stay a step ahead of Apple in terms of subscribers. It counted 96 million subscribers in the fourth quarter, up 36 percent from a year ago. Meanwhile, Apple’s music-streaming service has more than 50 million subscribers, according to CEO Tim Cook. Pandora, YouTube, IHeartRadio, Google, Amazon and others also offer music streaming and podcasts. In a blog post Wednesday, Ek said that Spotify has become the second-biggest podcasting platform in less than two years. “The format is really evolving and while podcasting is still a relatively small business

today, I see incredible growth potential for the space and for Spotify in particular,” he wrote. There are many ways to listen to most podcasts — among them, streaming services, downloads and podcast-specific apps like Castbox and Stitcher for Podcasts. It wasn’t clear if Spotify will distribute its new podcasts exclusively, make them widely available, or choose some intermediate step such as allowing other services to distribute them following a window of Spotify exclusivity. Spotify has already produced some original podcasts, including one series with comedian Amy Schumer and rapper Joe Budden.

Spotify takes a big jump into the podcasting game

By Mae Anderson Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Spotify is making a bigger bet on podcasts as it looks to bring a Netflix-like model of original programs to the audio world. The music-streaming pioneer gobbled up two podcasting companies, Gimlet and Anchor, on Wednesday. Although streaming is becoming an increasingly popular way to listen to music, Spotify and other services such as Pandora have struggled to make money because of the royalties and other fees that they have to pay

Country star Lambert reveals secret marriage NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country star Miranda Lambert celebrated Valentine’s Day weekend with the announcement that she secretly got married. A representative for the singer confirmed the marriage after Lambert posted photos on social media Saturday showing her in a white lace gown with her new husband, Brendan Mcloughlin. She wrote that in honor of Valentine’s Day, she wanted to share that she “met the love of my life. And we got hitched!” It’s unclear when the marriage occurred. The two-time Grammy winner was previously married to country star Blake Shelton, but she hadn’t spoken publicly about her relationship with Mcloughlin before Saturday. The Texas-born singer who is also a member of the group Pistol Annies has had hits with songs like “The House That Built Me,” ”White Liar,” ”Mama’s Broken Heart” and “Gunpowder and Lead.”

Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP Designer Ruth E. Carter, nominated for an Oscar for best costume designs for "Black Panther," poses for a portrait while holding a photo of one of her designs in Los Angeles.

‘Black Panther’ designer blazes trail to inspire

By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ruth E. Carter is a black woman blazing a trail as a costume designer in a film industry with not many who look like her. But through her upcoming career achievement award and Oscar nomination for her Afro-futuristic wardrobes in the superhero film "Black Panther," Carter believes she can "knock down" more doors so others like herself can walk through them. If Carter wins an Oscar for best costume design this month, she would become the first African-American to win in the category. Despite "very stiff competition," Carter believes she has a good chance going up against Mary Zophres, Alexandra Byrne and three-time Academy Award winner Sandy Powell, who is nominated for "The Favourite" and "Mary Poppins Returns." "I'm a contender," said Carter, who already won for "Black Panther's" costumes at the Critics' Choice Awards last month and was recently honored at New York Fashion Week.

"The designers are extremely talented designers, but I'm glad that I'm giving them a run for their money," she added. "That's how I feel. ... I feel empowered. I feel invigorated. I feel masterful." Carter, 58, will also be honored Tuesday for her illustrious career at the 21st annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. "She is one of my favorite people," said Danai Gurira, who starred in "Black Panther" as Okoye, one of kingdom of Wakanda's elite warriors. "I've adored her from the minute I met her. She deserves all the honors in what she's done and accomplished in her astounding work of beautiful integrity." In three decades, Carter has been behindthe-scenes in some of Hollywood's biggest films. She's garnered Oscar nominations for her work in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" and Steven Spielberg's "Amistad," and received praise for her period ensembles in other projects such as Lee Daniels' "The Butler," Ava DuVernay's "Selma" and the reboot of "ROOTS." She's created costumes for Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy and even Jerry Seinfeld for the "Seinfeld" pilot.

Carter called the guild honor an "incredible achievement" for herself and others who desire to follow her footsteps. "This award means so much to me," she said. "I believe that I will stand on that stage and look out into the audience of young women and men that have careers in costume design that I helped foster. For that achievement, it means everything." Carter played an influential role as lead costume designer in making Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" a cultural phenomenon. She said she wanted to infuse the pride of African diaspora into the character's stylish and colorful garments to help bring Wakanda to life. Angela Bassett said Carter hit the mark as usual. "She gives you a wardrobe that helps enhance your character," said Bassett, who played the mother of Chadwick Boseman's heroic character T'Challa aka the Black Panther. She said she's worked with Carter on other films, calling her "just warm, open, brilliant and she keeps fighting until she gets it right all the way to the end."

Checks, tie-dye, baby dolls: It’s all at Fashion Week

By Sylvia Hui and Gregory Katz Associated Press LONDON (AP) — From young talents like Alexa Chung and Simone Rocha to London design veteran Jasper Conran, London Fashion Week showed off a diverse range of womenswear ideas for the upcoming autumn and winter season with a busy day of catwalk shows Saturday. The spectacle is bringing much needed color and verve as gray London shakes off its winter blues amid the first hints of warmer weather. A look at some highlights:

House of Holland

London may not have Paris’s haute couture or Milan’s grand fashion houses, but the British capital has always been proud to be the wild child on the style front. That irreverent, street-wise London sass was on full display at House of Holland’s show, where designer Henry Holland threw together ’80s power dressing, Asian dress details and loud, clashing tie-dye prints for his latest collection. Holland said the show was all about the

rebellious, and indeed these were flamboyant, look-at-me statement clothes. Models opened Saturday’s show with tailored coats and jackets in the traditional Prince of Wales check — albeit in bright orange and paired with slinky green velvet animal prints. Then came everything from patchwork print kaftans, oversized silky bow neckties to denim overalls, all worn with berets, clunky platform boots and plenty of attitude. Quilted jackets and miniskirts, Mandarin collars and obi tie belts brought an Asian aesthetic.

Monastic chic at Jasper Conran

Who knew monks’ garbs could be so fashionable? High necks, long sleeves, dropped waistlines, skirts that brush the calf or ankle: Veteran designer Jasper Conran took inspiration from “monastic” shapes with a new collection of utilitarian, sleek tunics and dresses that quietly exuded sophistication rather than screamed glamour. FASHION

Continued from Page 12 Conran, a founding father of London Fashion Week, dialed down his signature flair for color for the upcoming autumn and winter season, opting instead for a mostly severe palette of earthy browns, rust, mustard and indigo. The designer focused on dresses that rival the comfort of sportswear. Some outfits — like several brown-all-over sweater dresses — bring to mind something a friar might wear. But Conran always kept things modern with a thigh-high side slit here, a slashed neckline there, a bright sporty piping or geometric color blocks. Conran ditched the covered-up look for the show’s final section, a collection of architectural column gowns. The colors are still understated here, but bare shoulders and sheer organza panels brought out the drama.

Simone Rocha impresses

Designer Simone Rocha turned in a bold, confident show impressive for its variety and thoughtfulness. Even American Vogue editor Anna Wintour skipped her signature sunglasses for a closer look at the stunning array of ensembles. Rocha seems to grow in stature each year, earning her reputation as one of the major new talents on the London scene. She said the theme Saturday was “intimacy, privacy, security, femininity.” There was no single look to the show, but Rocha did experiment with outfits that used sparkly bras or camisole tops on top of dresses. Elaborate coat-dresses, some with gauzy skirts, appeared, along with ethereal, pale pink dresses and one extremely gaudy gold number. A series of gorgeous, black-themed floral dresses, many tiaras, some whimsical Alice In Wonderland dresses and updated baby doll outfits also turned up. Rocha’s approach was playful, but her fashion intent was serious, and she made a point of using some slightly older models and also ones who were not rail-thin. She said after the show that she had asked many of her close model friends if they would take part in a show about intimacy and exposure. “Last season was all about my family, and by the end of it I felt so exposed, like telling everybody about my aunties and uncles,” she said. “I felt like I needed to look in, and I looked at all these photographs of women being exposed.”

Alexa Chung shows quirky classics

Model and TV presenter Alexa Chung has a loyal fan base and her many admirers flocked to Saturday’s show in London’s redeveloped King’s Cross neighborhood. They weren’t disappointed as Chung offered a new collection featuring her quirky, feminine take on classic designs. For her second London Fashion Week show, called “Off the Grid,” the designer announced she had lost all interest in “prettiness” and was imagining a “gaggle of women” who have retreated to California’s Big Sur coastal wilderness to regroup. Some of the models wear long coats with matching head scarves that are evocative of the American prairie. Many of the deceptively simple dresses emphasize the shoulders, giving the women an outline of physical strength, and much of the outerwear is masculine in style, particularly a forest green suit. Chung showed an easy, eclectic touch in a collection that included long black coats, several sexy gold dresses, and a few beautiful green midi dresses.

Planning for the future

Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau asking businesses to do online survey

The Edge The Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau (formerly known as Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau) has hired national tourism marketing consultant Bill Geist, of DMOproz, to develop a 2025 vision plan and strategic plan for the bureau. As the bureau looks to the future, it is in need of input from attractions, restaurants, shops, hotels and other tourism related businesses throughout Madison, Jersey, Calhoun, Greene, Macoupin and Montgomery counties. Business owners are asked to go to GreatRiversandRoutes.com/vision to answer a brief survey regarding tourism and their business. The input provided will be key for developing a comprehensive plan and focused vision for the future. Keeping the region at the forefront of the

tourism market takes creativity and planning. Geist first visited the region in 2015 to build a tourism vision plan to guide the organization through 2020. As the region has evolved, so must the plan in order to build on the strengths of the communities represented by the bureau. Geist will use a combination of survey responses, focus groups, interviews, and strategy sessions with the bureau in order to put together a plan to further develop the tourism product within the region and best market the destination on a national and international platform. As the bureau looks forward to the future, community input is essential to providing the best service possible and telling the unique stories of the destination to potential visitors. The survey located at GreatRiversandRoutes. com/vision will remain open until Feb. 26. For questions, email info@visitalton.com.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

The lambs have it One of my favorite restaurants is Olga’s Kitchen at Alton Square Mall. There’s something about the “Original Olga” that calls my name. Since the restaurant opened — way back In this column, Vicki when — I Bennington shares her have considlove of food and all that ered it a treat to “lunch” at involves, from special Olga’s. My daughter dishes at local and with regional restaurants to agrees me. Sure, it’s new trends and fads, changed a little over the and things to try at years. Olga’s home. Contact her at used to serve vbennington@sbcglob- “just-about al.net with comments, fat-free” bread, which ideas or suggestions. I liked, and I always felt like it was helping me reduce calories a little, but the traditional Olga bread is hard to beat for taste. The original Olga was named after its founder, the real “original Olga,” Olga Loizon, who recently died at 92. She developed her own recipe after visiting Greece, using seasoned beef and lamb, vine-ripened tomato, sweet onion, and that secret Olgasauce, wrapped in a special Olga pita bread (which is Olga’s real secret to success), and it surely hits the spot. Now I have tried gyros at other places — around the country — which are all-beef, or even all-lamb, but for me, none hold up to an Olga. There are other flavors — plenty of them — if you don’t think lamb is your thing. As the restaurant claims — everything tastes better on Olga bread. The grilled chicken Olga, oven-roasted turkey Olga, ham and cheese, steak and cheese, Mediterranean, Carolina BBQ Olga, and even an all-vegetable Olga ensures there is something for everyone. And, the Olga salad is soooo good. Of

course, being the quirky person I am, I don’t care for cheese (of any kind, except cream cheese or Mozzarella), so I order my salad sans feta — and as usual, I get a funny look from the waitress. What’s even funnier is, the waitress or waiter — no matter who it is, will then ask whomever is at my table, whether they want cheese. I’m not sure why my cheese preference would affect anyone else’s, any more than what I order affects what they order, and this is by no means limited to this restaurant. This has happened for my entire life, no matter who I am with and no matter where we are at. If I don’t want cheese, people think no one else at my table wants cheese. I can’t explain it, but I thought I would mention it — just for fun. But, back to Olga’s tasty food. If you are feeling extra hungry, you can throw in an order of seasoned curly fries or start the meal with snackers and dip. Neither one will disappoint. Other menu items include spinach and cheese pie (my mom’s favorite), peasant or cream of broccoli soup, white bean chicken chili, zucchini fries and quinoa harvest salad, which I haven’t tried, but I thought it looked good as I perused the table next to us. Top it off with the best-ever bread pudding — if you dare. Olga’s has been a fixture in Alton, Illinois, for more than three decades, and I still consider it a treat. In my book, the lambs definitely have it.

Natural beauty, quaint history make village of Elsah perfect wedding destination

State’s most scenic spot on National Register of Historic Places

By: Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

ELSAH — Illinois Top 200’s most scenic spot in the state is a perfect wedding site of historic proportions. The village of Elsah — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — is located on the Great River Road, nestled between Alton and Grafton. The entire village is a beautiful site for weddings and all the accompanying events, such as receptions, wedding showers and bachelorette parties at Farley’s Music Hall. Voters taking part in the Illinois Top 200 project last spring chose Elsah as the state’s top scenic spot, followed by the Great River Road (Illinois Route 100), of which the portion Elsah is located is designated a National Scenic Byway. The Great River follows the Mississippi River from Galena, Illinois, to the north of St. Louis, to Cairo, Illinois, south near the Missouri Bootheel. The village of Elsah’s surrounding limestone river bluffs provide gorgeous views and picturesque backdrops. “We’re really excited for Elsah as a wedding destination” said Green Tree Inn Bed and Breakfast co-owner Connie Davis, who also helps book one of the village’s three AirBnBs. “I envision an outdoor wedding at our gazebo with a reception at Farley’s Music Hall or a tented reception outdoors. Between our place and the Maple Leaf Cottage Inn Bed and Breakfast, as well as three AirBnBs, guests can rent out the entire village and have their special day here.” Owned by Green Tree Inn, the gazebo sets on the site of the original Union Hotel, which burned in 2003. Davis and her husband, Gary, also a coowner of the inn, had stone work on the gazebo’s lot rebuilt by a local stone mason. New concrete steps lead to the structure. Plans are for the gazebo

to serve as a focal point for outdoor weddings and other events, as well as photo opportunities through the Green Tree Inn, located at 15 Mill St., which also has an on-site antique shop. The Maple Leaf Cottage Inn is located at 12 Selma St. and its guests, as well as the public at large, can use the gazebo for outdoor weddings or other events, but must reserve the gazebo through the Green Tree Inn. Davis, who is steering the village’s destination wedding opportunities, represents the Maple Leaf Cottage, owned by Deborah Smith, Elsah General Store, Farley’s Music Hall and Elsah United Methodist Church (built in 1874), which allows non-members to marry there. The church’s mailing address is Elsah UMC, P.O. Box 163, Elsah, Illinois, 62028-0163; physical address is 2 Valley St.; and, its main service starts at 8:45 a.m. on Sundays, for anyone interested in visiting the church during its worship service. Potential guests can visit airbnb.com to rent at one of the Elsah properties or contact Davis, who manages one of the AirBnB properties, to help arrange AirBnB overnight stays. Davis also arranges booking for Farley’s Music Hall and Elsah UMC church tours. Elsah’s wedding destination gives couples and their guests historic and natural scenery; the Village of Elsah Museum, built in 1887, that was originally the Village Hall; opportunity to walk the village, which boasts 18 historic buildings, including 11 homes, some of which date back to the 1850s; a two-room school house; and, village businesses, such as Elsah General Store, built in the 1870s as a storefront, which serves coffee and danishes, as well as sells old-time candies and vintage sodas. Between the two B&Bs and three AirBnBs, the village offers 20 overnight rooms, several of which have more than one bed and all their proprietors give guests their personal attention.

“There are so many people who drive the River Road, yet don’t know a lot about Elsah,” Connie Davis said. In May, the village of Elsah holds its annual spring festival , of which Davis is chairperson, complete with great food, shopping for items past and present from artists and vendors, live music and good old-fashioned friendliness. In addition, visitors and festival goers can learn a little bit about the history of Elsah and its quaint homes and buildings, reminiscent of days gone by, nearly unchanged for 150 years. Elsah’s points of historical and natural interests are the Ice House, constructed in 1865; the Menke House, one of Elsah’s stone houses from the late 1850s, currently decorated for Christmas year-round; the Christian Science Church, which stands at the site of a 19th-century paper mill that was destroyed by a 1868 fire; the Christian Science Reading Room, formerly Spatz Filling Station, designed in 1931 for the Spatz brothers by Bernard Maybeck, principal architect of Principia College; and, Elsah’s constructed wetlands, featuring native water plants. Three Rivers Community Farm is also located in Elsah at 22867 Chautauqua Road. Women filmmakers’ voices growing louder

By LOUISE DIXON Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) — The voice of the female filmmaker was louder than ever at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, with seven out of the 16 films in the competition section helmed by women, and female directors from all corners of the globe featured prominently. Women directors represented 63 percent of the films presented across the festival’s 15 different sections, making it the biggest representation of women directors in the festival’s 69-year history. In addition, the Berlin Film Festival’s selection committee was overwhelmingly female. There were originally 17 films in competition but one film from China was withdrawn. This year’s festival, also known as the Berlinale, wrapped up on Sunday. It has been rich with global women telling female-focused stories, including Michela Occhipinti’s feature debut “Flesh Out,” about the practice of gavage, the forced fatteningup of young girls before their weddings in Western Africa. “We are half, maybe more than half the population,” she said of women. “(We are) feeling something different.” Other female-centered stories included Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska and her feminist satire “God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya;” ‘’37 Seconds,” a tender story from Japan about sex and disability from Hikari; and Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer’s “The Ground Beneath My Feet,” which looks at a high-performing career woman struggling with a sister with mental illness. There was also the black-and-white lesbian love drama “Elisa and Marcela” from Spanish filmmaker Isobel Coixet. British director Joanna Hogg presented her fourth feature film, “The Souvenir,” which followed a young girl through film school in the 1980s. Part autobiographical, part fiction, “The Souvenir” stars Honor Swinton Byrne as a student filmmaker alongside her mother, Tilda Swinton, who plays her on-screen mom. Hogg says she wants to encourage more women to make films and explains that one of the reasons for making the movie was to show a woman as an artist. “We all talk about films about directors like the wonderful ‘8 ½’ which I’m very inspired by, but they’re always these male directors, these sort of male egos,” she said. “So I’m kind of very interested in the female ego.” Swinton, who has directed documentaries, says for her, the role models have always been there. That wasn’t the case for Danish director Lone Scherfig, who opened this year’s fes-

Britta Pedersen | dpa via AP Director Isabel Coixet attends a news conference about the film 'Elisa und Marcela' at the 2019 Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin, Germany,. tival with “The Kindness of Strangers.” She says she didn’t have much inspiration from women filmmakers or the female characters she watched on screen growing up in Denmark. “Women were always happy and pretty and I, even as a little girl, would go to the cinema in a starched dress with a bow and dress up in order to go to the cinema to watch those women and wanted to be them,” she recalled. She says for her it was a big jump to making films “instead of just sitting, being, wishing you were Audrey Hepburn.” Sitting pretty is far from the minds of many of today’s women filmmakers, and the characters they create on screen are also challenging gender stereotypes. South African director Jenna Bass fought hard to get her contemporary all-female western “Flatland” made the way she wanted it, and even to be able to describe it as a western. Bass, like Scherfig, found the portrayals of women she watched on screen growing up to be unrealistic. “My ideas about what a romantic relationship between a man and a woman or between anyone should be like was informed by movies,” she said. “And when life didn’t correspond to that ... I thought that I’d done something wrong.” She puts much of this down to the male dominance of the industry. “All my role models were men, and all the films that I loved were about men. And

I didn’t really think too much about that for quite a while until I think I just generally started develop my own kind of like political consciousness about the world around me and start to question why that was,” she said. Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar was in Berlin for her movie “Gully Boy,” which looks at the urban rap music scene in India. She feels today’s women filmmakers are not only writing exciting female characters but “legitimate men.” “It’s really important to see how we see men and how we want to see men and what we think is heroic and what we think is something worth saluting,” she said. “And it needn’t always be larger than life and it needn’t be that kind of toxic masculinity, because that’s not what we want.” Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt stars in “Gully Boy” as the feisty, charismatic Safeena. She says she is often approached with offers of “strong female characters” or “female-led stories” but jokes that she hopes for a day when that doesn’t need to be highlighted. “Just get me a film and just be like you’ve got a good part. That’s it you know?” she said.

Jackson musical hits Broadway, skips Chicago CHICAGO (AP) — A stage musical about Michael Jackson will skip making its debut in Chicago and instead open on Broadway in summer 2020. Producers said Thursday that "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" will no longer have preBroadway performances this fall in Chicago, blaming a recent Actors' Equity Association strike over compensation. The association, which represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers nationwide, countered in a statement that said it was "incredibly disappointing" that the show's actors and managers learned of the change only after the producers' announcement and questioned how the strike, which delayed the show's development for a "modest" 12 working days, could so impact the run. The musical is inspired by Jackson's life and music. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage is writing the book, using Jackson's vast catalog of songs. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph. Jackson sold millions of records and was a 13-time Grammy winner. In 1983 he became an international icon with the release of "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time with such hits as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean." He died in 2009.

Actor Shatner boldly goes — this time to Grand Ole Opry

By Kristin M. Hall Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Actor William Shatner boldly went where no “Star Trek” captain has gone before when he took the stage for the first time for the Grand Ole Opry radio show to sing from his new album of country songs. Shatner made his Opry debut on Friday night in Nashville on the famed country

music radio show along with Jeff Cook of the band Alabama. Together they released a country album called “Why Not Me,” which features songs like “Beam Me Up,” a nod to both whiskey maker Jim Beam and Shatner’s catchphrase on the popular sci-fi TV show. The 87-year-old actor told the AP that while he’s not a typical singer, he understands the musicality of language. He’s released several albums including Christmas music and rock, and has plans to record a blues album next.

Chapman looks back, forward on ‘True North’ Join Us On Saturday Feb. 23rd at 10:30 am We're talking Bluebirds and Purple Martins By Pablo Gorondi Associated Press

If John Bonham called his drumsticks “trees,” Michael Chapman must have cables on his acoustic guitar instead of strings. Like Bonham’s booming but graceful play, Chapman’s tones are thick and elegant and provide his songs with a rich emotional heft. “True North” is the Englishman’s second album in a row admirably produced by Steve Gunn and, similarly to “50,” its 2017 predecessor, offers a few new tracks, fresh takes on several older ones and a pair of instrumentals shining the spotlight on his guitar skills. Including such gems as “Fully Qualified Survivor” and “Savage Amusement,” Chapman’s discography is extensive, including fascinating instrumental albums, and he’s revisited his own songs before, but the reworkings here should satisfy even the most

fanatical connoisseurs of his catalog. The arrangements are usually more stripped down and the splintered patina of the 78-year-old Chapman’s weathered voice makes already magnetic songs like “Vanity & Pride,” ”Hell to Pay” and “Youth Is Wasted on the Young” even more irresistible. The gravity of St John’s voice often matches Chapman’s but also offers a more melodic contrast. On “Bluesman” — one of the new tracks — and “Full Bottle, Empty Heart,” her contributions are especially crucial, while her lines on “After All This Time,” about an old relationship that left its mark on both partners, could be from a revitalized Marianne Faithful. The Earth’s magnetic north may be moving at increasing speed, but once you’re honed in on “True North” you won’t want to shift your attention anytime soon.

The evolution of public relations and public image By Nicole Dicks For The Edge In today’s technological age, it seems like we all have a story to tell. We can create a brand for ourselves using social media sites such as Instagram or offer our insights and opinions using Facebook. Sometimes, the stories we tell are so compelling and interesting we begin to have followers on those social media sites, wanting more from us and even offering to pay us because they believe in the public image we are portraying. Getting paid to be a social media maven, or more commonly referred to as an “influencer,” is not an easy task. Regardless, people are still motivated to try it. And, companies are willing to pay social media superstars to endorse them. Today, social media is a serious business. Working in public relations, it’s hard to not notice the impact social media is making on our lives. Public relations can be defined as “the professional maintenance of a favorable

public image.” With social media, it has never been easier to shape an image of your business and share your story using social media outlets. Are you doing good things in the community? Share the good news on social media. Having a company fundraiser or event? Social media gets the word out. Sure, traditional press releases are still being distributed to news outlets in the conventional way, but now more people are seeing that same press release or article and sharing it online and on social media sites. A recent study indicates that Americans “are online approximately 24 hours per week.” With so much screen time, you know people are staying up-to-date with products, services and companies more regularly. Whether they are shopping online or visiting websites, consumers have a lot of information with just a few clicks of the keyboard. As a business owner, it makes sense to capitalize on all of that “internet surfing time” with social media. If you already have a website for your business, imagine how significant the

addition of social media could be for your brand and company name recognition? With social media, it’s never been easier to showcase who you are and what business you are in. The most successful social media sites post on a regular basis (two to three times per week, depending on the industry) and post engaging, interesting content. Not every social media post needs to be about selling something. Typically, the sites with the most followers are the most entertaining overall and reflect the business’ personality. Public relations has changed and today’s businesses have the power to shape their image with social media and other online strategies more than ever before. With public relations’ evolution, it will be fun to see where it takes us next. Sign of the times: Blogs vs. websites By Nicole Dicks For The Edge Working for a full-service marketing agency, people will ask me what the difference is between having a website to support their brand or having a blog. If you own a business, without hesitation I will tell you that you need a website. It can be the simplest of sites, depending on what your product or service may be. However, if you are an individual that has a story to tell, or are passionate about health, fashion, food, or what-not, a blog may be the best for you. Simply put, the standard websites are static and content doesn’t change regularly. We recommend that your website be updated every few years because technology changes at such a fast pace it can be hard to keep up. Do you have an older website? Google may struggle to find your business and your website’s content. Think of it this way, a website is similar to buying a new iPhone. It’s likely to be outdated as soon as you sign the contract’s dotted line. That may be a stretch, but I’m sure you can appreciate the simile. Blogs, on the other hand, are “dynamic.” This means they are lively, changing and

search engines, such as Google and Bing, take notice. Because blogs are updated frequently with the latest views or newest craze, search engines are able to find them lurking among all of that internet content. We recommend to clients that they not only have a website, but also have a blog they update either once or twice each month. The blog’s “home base” can be their website page, which also means they are driving more visitors to their website. It’s a win-win. Depending on what you are trying to achieve with your online presence, it will determine which internet tool is best for you. If you own a business, it’s important to have a website so consumers see you as a legitimate company. If you want to make waves as a blogger or “influencer,” blogging may be the best avenue for you and there are sites designed just for bloggers to write and create an image that is truly their own. Mix in some social media, and you will be able to successfully extend your reach to consumers even further.
